For business or pleasure, on land or in air, you can really go places from Mt. Sterling, and coming back is a breeze.
Air Transportation The Mt. Sterling-Montgomery County Airport is one of the best kept secrets in the community. Located on U.S. 60 just 2 miles west of the Mt. Sterling City limits lies 5,000 feet of instrument capable runways which can accommodate most any business jet. A brand new terminal expansion has just completed and the airport has 72 based aircraft and 10 hangers. It is known across Kentucky as being one of the best managed airports and the fifth busiest airport in the state including all commercial and general aviation airports. Kentucky Airmotive, a family owned and operated business, manages the local airport and more. They charter flights and give flying lessons besides making our local airport one of the top in the state. When a plane owner and pilot from Georgetown, Kentucky was asked why he kept his plane at the Mt. Sterling-Montgomery County airport, he responded it was just more convenient and better managed. Danny Hill, owner of Kentucky Airmotive also charters flights and states that “our instrument-rated pilots are flexible to fly on your schedule
as your time demands and can fly to remote destinations that are not served by commercial airlines.” In addition, to charter flights, Kentucky Airmotive’s other business is teaching people to fly. Their students usually solo between 10 to 14 hours compared to 15-20 hours at other flight schools. Kentucky Airmotive uses a Jeppsen Training Syllabus and Cessnas for flight instruction. Hill says the instructors at Kentucky Airmotive are able to teach all aspects of flying necessary to pass the checkride but they go beyond that. They see that their students receive the correct instruction both on the ground and in the air, to be proficient, safe and competent pilots. In summary, the Mt. SterlingMontgomery County Airport is a major economic development tool and asset to this growing and expanding community. There is a reason it’s the fifth busiest in the state and Kentucky Airmotive is the biggest part of that success!

Mt. Sterling & Montgomery County
Are Growing!
Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, was settled in 1792 by Hugh Forbes, a Scotsman who held a land grant near an ancient tribal burial site known as “Little Mountain.” When choosing a name for the growing settlement, Forbes combined the name of the mound with Stirling, a town in his native Scotland. But having a strong heritage doesn’t mean we are focused on only our history; we are always looking forward. Only 29 miles east of Lexington on Interstate 64, Mt. Sterling has maintained its small-town flavor while keeping the door open to progress and new industry. Mt. Sterling is the county seat to Montgomery County, which is home to about 28,000 residents. Small in size, this town boasts a mere 4.39 square miles of land area and 0.02 square miles of water area, Mt. Sterling is big on community and industry – two things that result in great success and growth. According to the 2010 Census, the total Mt. Sterling population was 6,895, which grew 17.34 percent and is much higher than the national average rate of 9.71 percent. Sandy Romenesko, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Authority, said job growth is essential in raising the tax base and having employment opportunities for our residents. 28

“That’s why I love my job. Giving people an opportunity to make a living and support their family is very gratifying. We work hard to recruit new jobs and even harder to take care of our existing businesses and industries. We have about 5,000 manufacturing jobs in Montgomery County, which affords residents with lots of employment opportunities,” said Sandy Romenesko, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Authority. Mt. Sterling is the economic engine for this Central Kentucky region as noted by SITE SELECTION magazine, recently placing the community as a Top 10 Micropolitan community in Kentucky. in the community. Montgomery County is home to 35 industries employing over 5,000 area residents, a new hospital, a regional arts center, the Clay Community Center, which is home to the newest and fastest growing extended campus for Morehead State University, and a new Montgomery Extension of the Kentucky Community and Technical College system. When they opened, their goal was to have 75 students and they actually had 200! They were amazed and tremendously pleased. SITE SELECTION magazine, an Atlanta-based publication that has rated states annually since 1978, placed Kentucky fourth in the nation for new and expanded industry activity per capita in 2013. The ranking is based on a state’s total number of qualified projects that meet at least one of the three criteria: involve a capital investment of at least $1 million, create 50 or more jobs or add at least 20,000 square feet of new floor space. During 2013, Kentucky generated 163 projects that met the above standards for SITE SELECTION’S Governor’s Cup consideration. In total, 281 location or expansion announcements were reported in the state, resulting in 14,058 projected new full-time 30

jobs. Capital investment is estimated at nearly $3.3 billion. The magazine also recognizes top Metropolitan and Micropolitan areas for their economic development successes. A total of 10 Kentucky communities were recognized in the listing. In addition to Mt. Sterling, which tied for 27th along with Union City, Tennessee/ Kentucky and Danville, the other Kentucky communities making the Top Micropolitans list were: Paducah (tied for 16th); Frankfort (tied for 41st), Murray and London (tied for 70th); and Mayfield, Maysville and Somerset (tied for 130th). Mt. Sterling Tourism Director Tracy Pearce reiterated that Montgomery County is one of the fastest growing counties in Kentucky. “I want to help our community continue to grow by showcasing our attractions, events, shopping and dining options to as many people as possible at travel shows and with advertising and social media. People that visit and enjoy being here are much more likely to live here and open a business here. Our community is very visitor friendly and that really means a lot,”Pearce said.
A Work-Ready Community
Economic Development
We are a Work Ready Community! County leaders are to be commended for working together to achieve this goal,” said Crystal Gibson, chair of the Kentucky Work Ready Communities Review Panel and Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs at Citigroup. Gary Williamson, Mayor of Mt. Sterling, stated, “In my opinion, it’s inevitable that we would be one of the first seven communities in the state to be recognized as a Work Ready Community in Progress as we are already one of the top ten fastest growing counties in the state and one of the top 100 Micropolitan areas in the country. I have no doubt we will receive full certification before the required three-year time frame.”
The new Work Ready Communities certification program from the Kentucky Workforce Investment Board (KWIB) and the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet assures employers that a local workforce has talent and skills necessary to staff existing jobs and to master the innovative technologies new jobs will require. Montgomery County is proud to have earned certification! Kentucky is the third state to begin certifying counties as Work Ready Communities based on the quality of their labor force. To become certified, communities must gather local support and commitment and apply for the Work Ready Community designation. Counties have to meet criteria in six areas including high school graduation rate, National Career Readiness Certificate holders, demonstrated community commitment, educational attainment, soft-skills development and digital literacy. There are two levels of certification. Counties can apply to be a Kentucky Work Ready Community or a Kentucky Work Ready Community in Progress. In 2012, Montgomery County was a Work Ready in Progress. “We are excited that Montgomery County has achieved Work Ready Community in Progress status and we look forward to certifying many others in the future. Work Ready Community in Progress status is not an easy accomplishment. Montgomery 32

Montgomery County was designated as a Work Ready Community in Progress because it is close to meeting the criteria to be certified as a Work Ready Community. To achieve this level, a county must present a viable plan to meet all of the criteria within three years. The designation shows that a community is making strides and working with its business, education, workforce and economic development leaders to set and meet common goals that will give the county an economic edge. “We have to work on educational attainment and national career-ready certification,” said Sandy Romenesko, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Authority. “From 2012 to 2013 our national careerready certification grew over four percent. We plan to drop the ‘in progress’ within 12-24 months.” This certification shows commitment to enhancing our community in all areas of development. “Montgomery County is a role model for other communities that want to demonstrate a commitment to reaching education, workforce and economic development goals that make their communities a desirable place for businesses,” said Joseph U. Meyer, secretary of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. Applications for the certification were reviewed by a panel appointed by the KWIB. The panel recommended certification by the board for the counties that met the criteria. The panel will meet three times a year to review applications, which can be submitted at any time.

10-Year Member: Sheryl’s Hallmark
Sheryl’s Hallmark
Celebrating 10 Years in Mt. Sterling! Sheryl King is celebrating 10 years as the owner of Sheryl’s Hallmark located in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. King is proud to say her business has nearly doubled in volume over the past ten years and she feels right where she is supposed to be. King comments, “I like Mt. Sterling because it has just enough going on, we’re progressive. It’s also a very positive, safe place and we’re blessed with a quality school system and law enforcement. The area is just comfortable.” Upon deciding to purchase the Hallmark store, King became a chamber member right away. She feels that in being a chamber member she is more in-the-know and connected with the community. Being a chamber member has also helped Sheryl network with other leaders in the community. “I enjoy the free advertising, social media promotion, and the e-mail blasts that the chamber sends out to promote my events” she said. “Plus, the directory is a great resource and I appreciate that members really help each other out!”

Sheryl’s Hallmark won the Mt. Sterling-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Award in 2012. The Small Business Award is given to a unique, inspirational or visionary business with less than 50 employees who is also community oriented. The awards are given only to businesses who are nominated by members of the community. King attributes her business growth to the benefits of being a chamber member, but also to the great customer service that her six employees offer. In addition to Sheryl’s business being recognized at the Annual
Chamber Awards Banquet, she has also been an active member by serving on the Chamber Board for three consecutive years as well as serving as Chamber Treasurer and Banquet Committee Chairperson. King feels that by serving on the chamber board and actively participating in the chamber, she is doing her service by working for the greater good of the community. Sheryl and her husband also play an active role in the community by participating in Kiwanis and helping out at the schools. “That’s very important to us,” she says.
New Industry: Vogelsang Corporation
Economic Development
New Industry Brings Growth Vogelsang Corporation Builds More than Just Metal With Manufacturing plants in the United States and Europe, Vogelsang is a leading manufacturer of formed metal parts and one of the world’s largest producers of spring pins, (roll pins both slotted and coiled), tension bushings and tubular spacers. And just last year, the company chose Mt. Sterling as home to its 32,000 sq. ft. facility.
The German company, known for its manufacture of tubular fasteners for the automotive market, located in a spec building in the Woodlands Industrial Park. It was a community effort to land Vogelsang, which involved cooperation between the Industrial Authority, Montgomery County Fiscal Court, Mt. Sterling Water and Sewer, Mt. Sterling City Council and Brett Construction, the spec building contractor. Sandy Romenesko, Industrial Authority Director, said that level of community cooperation helps make this area attractive to others. “Vogelsang’s location was truly a unique situation and a true public/private partnership. It wouldn’t have happened without Brett Construction, Walker Construction and the Mt. Sterling Water and Sewer Company, among others. We ALL worked together and under tight deadlines to get the building up and ready for occupancy and to get utilities to the building. 36

I want to publicly thank all of them for their dedication to the project and their patience,” she said. Scott McKee, VPGM of Vogelsang, said he began searching for the company’s new location within a 70 mile radius of Montgomery County. When he contacted the City of Mt. Sterling last spring and said he needed the building constructed in three months, he thought it was improbable to meet such a strict timeline. “It was a go the first of June and we were making parts by August,” he said. “It was a wonderful accomplishment.” McKee, who is originally from Kentucky but relocated to New Jersey for Vogelsang, said this area is very good for business. “There are several thousand people employed in the Industrial Park and many companies are expanding.

New Industry: Vogelsang Corporation
We have a good pool of skilled tradespeople and of general labor in the area. It is the increase in industry that has stabilized the economy here,” McKee said. Operations began just a year ago, but McKee said they are already expanding their facility with plans to finish another 8,000 sq. ft. very soon. The company has 13 employees with plans to hire six more this year. McKee said the Mt. Sterling Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Authority was key in helping establish Vogelsang here. “The Chamber and Industrial Authority was very instrumental dealing with the red tape in a timely fashion,” he said. “Their staff would call to see how we were doing and offered to help with local resources, which was very encouraging and helpful. And the networking from being a Chamber member is very good.” Mt. Sterling and Montgomery County are fortunate to have great industries like Vogelsang that are showing promise for growth. “I want to thank Vogelsang for their confidence in us to get the building ready and for choosing to make Mt. Sterling and Montgomery County their new home. Our motto is we work hard to get you here and harder to ensure your success and to keep you here. Mt. Sterling Means Business… no truer words can be spoken,” Romenesko said.

Industrial Park Land Available! Located about 1 mile from the city limits of Mt. Sterling, and less than a quarter mile from Exit 113 on Interstate-64 is Woodlands Industrial Park. This industrial park is well over 400 acres and home to the area’s largest manufacturing employer, Nestle Foods, as well as several other large industries such as Precision Resources, Olympic Steel and Cooper Standard Automotive. Woodlands still has 128 acres of fully developed and buildable land. With easy transit access, developed utilities and protective zoning, this acreage offers optimum location for industry. And according to Chairman of the Board of Mount Sterling-Montgomery County Industrial Authority, Spears Stilz, land prices are around $20 thousand per acre, which is cheaper than any community of similar size in the area or state. “Manufacturing and distribution are the largest part of the economic base in Montgomery County,” Stilz said. “This is a business-friendly community that weathered the recession well because of the diversity of the industrial base. Moreover, most manufacturers in the park have or are expanding and adding investment and new jobs.” To see a conceptual drawing that outlines tracts in Woodlands Industrial Park along with an aerial view, visit the new Chamber website, www.mtsterlingchamber.org. Website Makeover The Chamber’s online presence gets a new look with help from local business The ever-evolving age of technology helps us work, share and learn faster. With this comes the challenge of keeping up to speed with all the changes. The Mt. Sterling Chamber of Commerce has been working toward making its website member- and Economic Development-oriented. The Chamber also wanted a more user-friendly site, specifically on tablets and smartphones. To redesign the site, the Chamber Board chose Jessica Robinson, owner and principal designer of Print + Pixel Creative, not only because she was local, but because they felt she could deliver an excellent end product.

Features of the new Chamber website include an enhanced member directory, easier to read and expanded calendar of events, and detailed community information. It also includes new Industrial Park, maps, and photos and an expanded job postings page, that not only lists available jobs but gives you the opportunity to apply directly online. Robinson has 15 years of experience as a graphic designer and after freelancing for years decided to take the leap and start her own business in Mt. Sterling. A full-time business owner since July 1, 2013, Robinson is loving the whirlwind business-owner

experience and is “off to a great start. It is exciting, and actually, I wish I’d done it [opened her business] sooner!” She immediately became a Chamber member and has enjoyed the “phenomenal experience of being involved in the business community.” “As a small business owner there is no better way for me to network and gain credibility with local businesses than by joining the Mt. Sterling Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. Membership gives me access to over 450 individuals and 300 businesses, and our local Chamber is an integral part of our thriving economy.” Robinson started in print design, but about five years ago, many of her freelance clients started asking for websites. She saw a market for it so she educated herself on website development and now about 50 percent of her business is website design. “Print will always have a special place for me. I love the physical part of print; the interaction with it, but there is so much to learn and expand on with website development and social media. I am smitten with the constant change,” she said. “I like using a combination of both to communicate my clients’ stories and convert that into positive results for their business.”
As a small business owner, Robinson enjoys meeting new business members, showing them how branding and marketing can strengthen their business, and getting to learn about new industries. Robinson and her intern, Shay Hammond, spent months working with the Chamber to redesign and build the website. The new site is easy to navigate, with appealing colors, fonts and graphics, plus it is supported by a content management system, which allows staff at the Chamber to regularly update content on their own, resulting in a more dynamic and a more up-to-date site. Robinson also rebuilt the site to be mobile responsive site, meaning the site will provide an optimal viewing experience throughout the desktop, tablet and mobile devices. “This is long overdue and much needed. We are so excited that we are submitting this new website for an award. Our goal is to have the most user-friendly and informational Chamber and Economic Development website in the country. Improved search engine optimization should help you find us and the responsive design will ensure our content is easily read on every device,” said Sandy Romenesko, Executive Director of the Mt. Sterling Chamber of Commerce.
