Junior Film Fleadh
This year marks the thirteenth Junior Film Fleadh, and it seems appropriate that this year we celebrate the teenager. The films in this programme are all excellent explorations of different aspects of teenage journeys. Red Like The Sky is the tale of a blind boy who loves cinema, who grew up to be one of Italy’s most prominent sound designers. It is a story of triumph over adversity – told with compassion, and a refreshing lack of sympathy for its blind protagonists. God Grew Tired of Us is a documentary that is engaging, funny and tragic in equal measures as it chronicles it’s teenage protagonists’ integration to American society from a Kenyan refugee camp. They have never experienced an airplane, running water or electricity. Will the USA prove to be their Heaven? The film is as much an examination of the material values of the USA, as the power of community and national identity within the people of Sudan. 32A is a stunning film that explores the emotional growing pains of teenage girls. In addition to the screening, we are honored to host a Q&A session with some of the film’s young stars, who will discuss their experience of making the film. The centerpiece of this year’s Junior Fleadh will be a screening of Carl Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc, one of the world’s most iconic teenagers. The film is a silent masterpiece and it will be played along with a recent score by Richard Einhorn – specially commissioned for the film. This screening will challenge the perception that silent cinema cannot be as gripping and as emotionally satisfying as anything in your Omniplex. Under The Mud is a great accomplishment, not just because local teenagers wrote it but also because it is such an enjoyable film that examines the importance of family and community within Liverpool. Indeed many of the young cast will be present for our screening and there will be a questions and answers session afterwards. In conjunction with the Irish Film Institute we are delighted to screen two new films. Our French film, Comme Une Image, is a contemporary look at family relationships and the nature of celebrity, while our German film, Warchild, focuses on a Bosnian woman’s search for her fostered daughter. Our Shorts Programme is an ever popular element of our festival, and this year is no different with shorts from Limerick’s Fresh Film Festival, TG4 and our own Young Film Makers. We trust that you will enjoy the cinema on offer here, and we look forward to meeting you at the Junior Film Fleadh!

Comme Une Image is an intelligent film which explores family relationships, the nature of celebrity and contemporary society’s obsession with image. Lolita is a talented but insecure teenager who is trying to develop a classical singing career and a more positive sense of herself, despite being almost completely ignored by her self-obsessed famous father. She is pretty but overweight, and is desperate for her father’s affection. She is also barely noticed by others until they discover who her father is – which makes her suspicious of people’s motives. Warchild is a powerful drama from German director Christian Wagner. Unlike our previous choices which concentrated on German stories, this riveting film explores the connection between Germany and nearby Bosnia, through the search of a resolute Bosnian woman for her daughter who was fostered during the war a decade earlier. Senada travels illegally from Sarajevo to Ulm in Germany, where she finds her missing daughter Kristina, who is being raised by a well-to-do German family. The heart-breaking dilemma faced by Senada, set against the terror of her past experiences, goes some way towards showing how lives have been affected by the conflict. Special thanks to the Irish Film Institute. A Study Guide will accompany this film.

When Mirco was blinded at eight years of age – what future was left for him? In 1970’s Italy, his future was bleak. He was sent to an industrial school for the blind where he was taught to weave material – one of the few occupations that were possible for someone without sight to secure. But Mirco could see beyond his disability, he finds a tape recorder, and is given some sound reels – and starts to make audio portraits of the world around him. But when the principal of the school finds out he is keen to crush his emerging talents. Based on the life of one of Italy’s most gifted sound engineers, Mirco Mennaci, Red Like The Sky received a standing ovation from an enthusiastic audience when it opened this years’ Galway Film Fleadh – and deservedly so. Cristiano Bortone’s beautiful film is a tribute to the unsurpassable spirit of youth, imagination and to the magical power of cinema itself.

Director Carl Dreyer Cast Maria Falconetti, Eugene Silvain, André Berley, Maurice Schutz B&W, Silent Town Hall Theatre Galway Wednesday 7th November 12.30pm
It seems fitting that in the year we celebrate the teenager, that have as the centerpiece of our programme, Carl Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan Of Arc. A rebel, a leader at 15 years of age, and now a religious icon, Joan of Arc was literally the teenager that saved her nation. This drama is set in the period where she was interrogated by dozens of theologians and for fourteen months, managed to stay true to her inner spirit, and even challenge the prejudice of her interrogators. She is subsequently sentenced to death, unless she renounces God – this is her dilemma, her passion. In this film, Maria Falconetti commits to film one of the greatest performances of all time. And we are honored to present this film with a score written by Richard Einhorn to compliment the film. The Passion of Joan of Arc may well challenge an audiences’ perception of silent film, and demonstrate it as an experience that is truly captivating and utterly forgettable.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, God Grew Tired Of Us explores the indomitable spirit of three ‘Lost Boys’ from the Sudan who leave their homeland. These teenagers were among the 25,000 children who fled villages, formed surrogate families and sought refuge from famine, disease, wild animals and attacks from rebel soldiers. They triumphed over seemingly insurmountable adversity and civil strife in their own country, and were selected by a US programme where they are brought to the US, and given jobs and accommodation. These people have never know airtravel, electricity, escalators or running water. Will the USA prove to be their nirvana? What about the tribe they left behind? A film that is, in turns, funny and moving, tragic and heartwarming, God Grew Tired of Us is an intelligent film telling an important story. Narrated by Nicole Kidman. 11

How does life look to a 13-year-old girl? This story is set in the “in-between” time of a girl’s life, when she is no longer a child and not yet a woman. We open with our heroine, Maeve, putting on her new snow-white bra, and stepping out into the world as a young woman. She has an obsession with breasts and bras and can’t help but stare at other women; even the head nun doesn’t escape her gaze. Her world revolves around her three friends, Ruth, Claire and Orla, who are more experienced in the ways of the world. They wear bras already (except Claire the feminist) and they’ve all had boyfriends. The new bra is a start but they really hope Maeve can find a boyfriend, even offering kissing lessons to prepare her. What no one expects, least of all Maeve, is that she should snare the local heart-throb, Brian Power… 12

Director Kenneth Branagh’s imaginative adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic As You Like It celebrates the enduring power of love in all its many disguises. Witty, playful and utterly magical, the story is a compelling romantic adventure in which Rosalind and Orlando’s celebrated courtship is played out against a backdrop of political rivalry, banishment and exile in the Forest of Arden. Rosalind, the daughter of a banished Duke, is forced to flee her uncle’s court and brave the wild Forest of Arden. Accompanied by her loyal cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man which. comes in handy when she tests the devotion of Orlando, and teaches him lessons about matters of the heart. Some of the Bard’s most poetic and beautiful language flows as a merry and melancholy series of misunderstandings unfolds amidst the collision of court the way, the forces of true love and justice eventually triumph. 13
