BLQ House is located in the Nuevo Quilmes gated community, on the “kilometre 17 off-ramp of the highway that links the cities of Buenos Aires and La Planta. Being so close to the centre of Buenos Aires, the community consists of an average urban density and its plots of land are relatively small. Originally free of vegetation, the plot is an irregular quadrilateral polygon, with a diagonal line parallel to the street cutting through the front section. The commissioning client, a couple with two children, asked to have their permanent residence built by the Studio and requested that it should include an en-suite master bedroom with its own dressing room and two secondary bedrooms sharing a bathroom. The program also called for a studio linked to the social areas of the house which the father would use as his working space. The family expressed their desire for the house to have a generous outdoor patio equipped with a grill. Special emphasis was placed on privacy and the fact that the house should be sheltered from the street. The Studio designed a single exposed concrete volume which occupies the site’s maximum building width longitudinally. The shell opens towards the green space at the back of the site. Situated at the front of the house, the spaces incorporating the entrance area as well as living space and kitchen areas, separate the street side from the more social areas set in the rear and which are endowed with skylights and windows facing the garden.

Not only did the concrete’s structural system serve the house as a supporting skeleton, but it also functions as a space organiser. Set longitudinally along the volume’s length, two parallel continuous beams support the slab over the ground floor, and the same structure is replicated over the first floor. Windowless walls at the sides of the house both provide privacy to the inside and underpin these wide spanned beams. While allowing greater freedom when designing the front and rear openings, the rigid frame structure configuration of the house makes it possible to generate a big free floor central space housing a unified living room and dining area. Being also a beam, the great concrete cover on the front of the house permits transparent openings on the ground floor, allowing visual fluidity between the garden and the street. The private rooms on the first floor have a strong relationship with the outside through their glazed surfaces, and the master bedroom extends towards a private outdoor space with generous views of the garden.

da ARCHITECTURE

15

The concrete cover on the front provides passive solar control by thermally protecting the least sunny, the southeastern, side of the house. At the back, above the outdoor expansion of the private rooms, a series of vertical cantilevered partitions function as shades which shelter the inside against the sunlight from the west. A horizontal eave which goes all along the house’s width gives protection from the northern sunshine. This outdoor expansion on the first-floor acts as a roof for the patio downstairs. Being a connection between the social areas inside and the green space outside, it facilitates the transition from one sector to the other, at the same time protecting the inside from the outside weather whilst allowing entertainment in a sheltered outdoor space. Clarity in the house’s tectonic means, simplicity in its construction and purity in its materials were aimed at. The use of concrete made it possible to organize, and expand fluidity and free, and open the space as well as link it with its surroundings. Following Mies’s conception of architecture as the expression of structure, the house’s supporting skeleton and its spatiality were integrated into a formal unity.

LUCEM LichtbetonÂŽ

LUCEM LichtbetonÂŽ opens up innovative design possibilities for extraordinary lighting scenarios on facades, wall coverings, floor coverings as well as furniture or washbasin tops. LUCEM has recently added design-oriented luminaires of aesthetic uniqueness and practical additional benefits to its product range.

da LIGHTING DESIGN

20

The fascination of Lichtbeton® - illuminating and staging Concrete and translucency - what sounds like a contradiction is combined with LUCEM Lichtbeton® in an extraordinary material: translucent concrete. The translucent concrete conveys the light of the backlighting to the surface by means of embedded, light-transmitting fibres and thus begins to shine bright and fascinating from inside out. Without backlighting, the translucent concrete surface has a calm, natural stone-like appearance. With backlighting, it shines in exciting, surprising materiality, creates effective lighting effects and generates a special atmosphere.

Each piece is unique: handmade light cubes made in Germany The luminaire collection LUCEM Lights made of Lichtbeton® creates unique living environments. The handmade lighting collection made in Germany, designed by Paradigm DH, an internationally active design and architecture office from Amman / Jordan, comprises five series in different designs and material combinations. The portfolio includes wall and table lamps as well as floor lamps and floor-standing light cubes for indoors and outdoors. The series of the LUCEM_one is available in sizes with 18 x 18 cm, 25 x 25 cm, 40 x 40 cm and 120 x 18 cm edge lengths and in the colours white or anthracite. Depending on their size, the light cubes can also be used for storage or decorative purpose, as a side table or as a seat.

Bright and full of luminosity for outdoors and indoors LUCEM one-floor lamps, light cubes and table lamps consist of 2 cm thick LUCEM Lichtbeton® panels whose mitre-cut edges are self-supporting and bonded with epoxy resin for durable outdoor applications. Inside there is an energy- efficient LED lighting technology (exchangeable light source). During the day, without lighting, the impression of a massive cube as an aesthetic art or design object with the surface appearance of a high-quality natural stone is created. In the dark, the design luminaires can also function as a guide or orientation light. LUCEM Lichtbeton® is weather- and UV-resistant, abrasionresistant and incombustible. The robust and durable material is therefore ideal for outdoor and indoor lighting applications.

Run

A Collection of Tables, Benches and Shelves By Sam Hecht and Kim Colin for EMECO FOR ONE AND FOR ALL When Emeco began working with Sam Hecht and Kim Colin, we talked about creating a furniture collection that brings people together, to suit the way we would like to eat, study, play and work, whether indoors or out. The result is Run – a collection of tables, benches and shelves, inspired by the collective congenial atmosphere around public furniture such as canteen tables, park benches and library shelves. It feels natural for these Run items to be used personally or to be shared by many. “Run effortlessly finds balance in both indoor and outdoor landscapes suited for meeting, eating, learning, sharing and working. Run is shaped to acknowledge the benefits of being around others, so tables are welcoming and useful, made to work purposefully well with many of Emeco’s existing chairs and stools, including the original Navy Chair.” - Sam Hecht, Industrial Facility, London

da FURNITURE DESIGN

23

LONG-SHORT; HIGH-LOW; IN-OUT Run can be used indoors or out, with lengths between 2400mm and 830mm, in sitting or standing heights. The collection has a restrained materials palette: Structural elements are made of extruded, non-corroding recycled aluminium in either natural or powder coated black. Plank surfaces are available in anodised aluminium, suitable for use both indoor and outdoors, or 3 types of responsibly harvested wood. Cedar is suitable for outdoor use; ash and walnut for indoor use. Wood planks are made by Amish craftsmen in nearby Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. “With Run, Sam Hecht and Kim Colin have designed a collection of “pure utility.” Whether long or short, high or low, inside or outside, Run is a system that provides an architect or designer an adaptable tool that works for any application.” Gregg Buchbinder, CEO, Emeco

ABOUT EMECO The American furniture company Emeco was founded in 1944 to make lightweight, non-corrosive, fire resistant and torpedo proof chairs for the US Navy. The classic 1006 Navy Chair was born. Made to last at least a hundred and fifty years, it was light, smart, functional and strong - because that was the best we could do. Today our craftsmen in Hanover, Pennsylvania continue to handcraft chairs that are so strong they are passed down through generations – that’s how we define ‘sustainability.’ Emeco is leading the industry, exploring and innovating ways to use consumer and industrial waste, and environmentally responsible resources to create and build simple, timeless furniture. We work with the world’s best designers and influential corporations including Philippe Starck, Norman Foster, BMW, Frank Gehry, Coca-Cola, Jean Nouvel, Konstantin Grcic, Nendo, and Jasper Morrison to make chairs that live up to the standards that we inherited from our founders with a vision to make a difference.

Swan House H3K Design Rejuvenates a Mid-Century Masterpiece for Modern-day Living

“The home, when we found it, was an ugly duckling which became a swan. The bank told us it was a teardown. We knew it would have history,” say H3K principals Kevin Kemper and Howard Hawkes.

From the brink of foreclosure... In the 1960s, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz gathered here with other Hollywood royalty to clink glasses in the home of Pharmaceutical magnate Mel Eaton. Fifty years later, the home would be lost were it not for the preserving eye of Palm Springs-based H3K Design. Purchased in 2014 and recently renovated, it is now one of the only chances to see Midcentury luxury refitted and preserved for modern living.

Renovated in 2015, the ‘Swan House’ is the embodiment of Kevin and Howard’s commitment to breathing new life into yesterday’s masterful architecture. A network of powder rooms, accommodations for clerks and coat checks and modest staff kitchen have been done away with, replaced with bold yet simple colour palette, more open floor plan, and a massive combined kitchen and great room that begs to entertain.

The classic appeal of mid-century design is preserved, however, through vaulted ceilings, accents of soft metallics, fluted columns, and an asymmetrical floor plan. The home retains the restored door knockers, railings, and the original Brown Jordan-designed swimming pool.

The Swan House is proof that past architectural eras never truly go out of style. With their renovations, H3K have pulled a diamond from the rough, preserving a relic of Mid-century design fit for contemporary entertaining.

LAMY aion – designed by Jasper Morrison

Technically structured and consistently functional, the model epitomises LAMY design – yet also surprises with progressive details. The new series has been designed by one of the most prestigious designers of the present day: Jasper Morrison.

da PRODUCT DESIGN

39

A sleek, perfectly-proportioned body, a straight clip, a stainless-steel spring. The new LAMY aion is this minimalist. Designed by the British industrial designer, Jasper Morrison, this is absolutely in harmony with his conviction that good design is maximally simple – yet, at the same time, maximally functional. An attitude absolutely compatible with the design principles of the LAMY brand – principles it has used as a basis for the development of its writing instruments for over 50 years. At the same time, the LAMY aion reveals an uncompromising modernity, which is especially visible in the details. For the first time, a Lamy fountain pen has been equipped with a series-exclusive, newly-formed nib. Jasper Morrison gave it an unconventionally-proportioned outline, thus giving the writing instrument an avant-garde character. A distinguishing feature of the LAMY aion, and a real innovation in the production of writing instruments is the ‘cast in one piece’ manufacture, whereby the body and cap are each designed as closed, seamless components and have an innovative surface structure. The grip zone is matted and thus finely accented. Its puristic, externally-sprung stainless steel clip completes the overall formal concept. As little plastic as possible is used in the LAMY aion, and it is manufactured from all metal. In order to realise the seamless design and the innovative surface finish of the LAMY aion, Lamy has developed new manufacturing processes. In a sophisticated multi-stage process, the aluminium housing elements are formed by deep-drawing. The surface structuring is computer-controlled by robot-supported grinding. For its unique finish, the components of the LAMY aion are first brushed, stained, polished and, in the case of the grip, blasted and then finally anodised.

da PRODUCT DESIGN

Jasper Morrison, born in 1959 in London, is considered to be one of the leading designers of the present day. He first studied design at the Kingston Polytechnic Design School in London and then completed his Master’s degree at the Royal College of Art. In 1984, he spent a year on a scholarship at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. In 1986, he opened his own design studio in London and soon made a name for himself with two installations: in 1987, he designed the Reuters News Centre for the Documenta 8 in Kassel and, in 1988, he exhibited ‘Some New Items for the Home’ at the DAAD Gallery. His first well-known customers were Aram and SCP, Neotu, FSB, Cappellini and the furniture brand, Vitra, for whom he still designs today. In the 1990s and 2000s, works for Alessi, Flos, Magis, Rosenthal, Muji, Samsung, Ideal Standard and Established & Sons followed. In 2006, together with the Japanese designer, Naoto Fukasawa, he organised an exhibition entitled ‘Super Normal’, which was accompanied by a book of the same name. After its premiere in Tokyo, the exhibition was also shown in London, Milan, and New York and did, in fact, inspire Jasper Morrison to open his own store in London in 2009. His company, Jasper Morrison Ltd, currently has offices in London, Tokyo and Paris. Jasper Morrison’s works have already been displayed in numerous exhibitions, including the Axis Gallery and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs Bordeaux. In 2015, the first retrospective of his work entitled ‘Thingness’, opened in Grand-Hornu in Belgium, and this was accompanied by the monograph, ‘A Book of Things’. In 2016, the exhibition was presented at the Museum für Gestaltung – Schaudepot in Zurich.

Houston (June 12, 2018): Axiom Space is offering expeditions to space aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and ultimately the Axiom commercial space station complex. Ten-day missions are priced at $55 million with the first launch occurring in 2020. The price includes transportation to and from the ISS, everything necessary to live and enjoy the experience while on orbit, and a 15-week, transformational training experience. Training is to current spaceflight standards and will be conducted side-by-side with national astronauts. Axiom’s aim is for some of the most visionary people on the planet to participate in science, industry and the arts on-orbit while experiencing the ‘overview effect’ of seeing our fragile planet and all of humanity as a single unit. These pioneering influencers and their related philanthropic entities will benefit from this perspective-altering, holistic view of Earth and its inhabitants and make world-changing choices that will benefit us all. Michael Suffredini, CEO and President of Axiom Space said, “It is an honour to continue the work that NASA and its partners have begun, to bring awareness to the profound benefits of human space exploration and to involve more countries and private citizens in these endeavours.”

da INTO THE FUTURE

Axiom Space is building the world’s first commercial space station. The Axiom commercial space station complex will be assembled while connected to the ISS and separated from it upon the retirement of the latter. The Axiom corporate mission is to increase access to space, provide a robust user experience, generate space commerce and develop products for large markets on Earth, ranging from turbine blades to fibre optics to bio-printing and much more. The new station habitation spaces, including the crew quarters, dining area and galley, are being designed in partnership with Philippe Starck, an architect and designer internationally renowned for visionary, experiential and elegant design. “This is a dream project for a creator like myself who has a genuine fascination for aviation and space exploration,” said Philippe Starck. “The greatest human intelligence in the world focuses on space research. My vision for the Habitation Module on Axiom Station is to create a comfortable egg that is inviting with soft walls and a design perfectly in harmony with the values and movements of the human body in zero gravity.” Missions to the International Space Station and Axiom Station are now available and can be booked through the Axiom Space website: www.axiomspace.com.

da ART

Christy Lee Rogers is a visual artist from Kailua, Hawaii. Her obsession with water as a medium for breaking the conventions of contemporary photography has led to her work being compared to Baroque painting masters like Caravaggio. Boisterous in colour and complexity, Rogers applies her cunning technique to a barrage of bodies submerged in water during the night, and creates her effects using the refraction of light. Through a fragile process of experimentation, she builds elaborate scenes of coalesced colours and entangled bodies that exalt the human character as one of vigour and warmth, while also capturing the beauty and vulnerability of the tragic experience that is the human condition. Rogers’ works have been exhibited globally from Paris, London, Italy, Mexico City to Shanghai, Sao Paulo, South Africa, Los Angeles and more, and are held in private and public collections throughout the world. She has been featured in International Magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Art China, Elle Decoration, Global Times, The Independent, Casa Vogue, Photo Technique, Photo Korea and others. Rogers’ “Reckless Unbound” is currently housed at Longleat House in the UK. This stately home is the seat of the Marquesses of Bath and also home to Renaissance gems of the Italian masters, such as Titan’s “Rest on the Flight into Egypt.” Rogers’ art has been featured on several album covers, and her images were selected for the 2013– 2014 performance season of the Angers-Nantes Opera in France. She mainly shoots in Hawaii, and currently lives in Nashville, TN, where she also spends her time as a mother, filmmaker, and musician.

Interview with Christy Lee Rogers, Art Labor (Shanghai) Art Labor is thrilled to present new photographic works, by Hawaiian born artist Christy Lee Rogers (b.1972), for a solo which opened 23 June 2018. A pioneer in underwater photographic style and technique, earning her international acclaim, her work embraces the unique quality of light refraction between the surface and layers of water, and her personal approach is to honour and explore the frailty of our existence within the elements around us. The works will then be exhibited with Art Labor at PHOTO FAIR | Shanghai from September Can you tell us a bit about how the idea for your solo exhibition in China with Art Labor? This is my second solo exhibition with Art Labor in Shanghai. The collection, titled “Muses”, began with the idea of letting go. The idea of surrendering to the present moment and letting go of all anxiety, tension, self-constraint and false-ness so that our true selves could finally break through. After losing many people in my life this year, some who passed at a very young age, I had no choice but to let go and try to live life to the fullest. Any day could be my last, and I knew I would not forgive myself if I didn’t do everything, I was capable of doing now. So, this was at the core of Muses; the inspiration that was pushing me forward. And there were days when I was creatively blocked, but when I did finally “truly” let go, these images worked their way through me, like muses. I almost don’t know how they are possible. But I would say that these final images represent a soft and peaceful place that I imagine exists, where you can be free to let go and experience the beauty surrounding you. And that is my wish for everyone.

59

What are you working on currently? At the moment I’m experimenting with these beautifully colourful inks, water and light. And I’m travelling quite a bit for shows this year. What are your aims and objectives when taking a photograph? Creating new virtual realities for the viewer, but also expressing that these realities can be real because I’m actually seeing them through my lens. I’m also quite fascinated with breaking some of the rules of contemporary photography by using water and light in experimental ways. I don’t think these photographs are supposed to work and I never follow light meters. But I’m mostly interested in uplifting people in the only way I know. Life can be quite serious, and we all need a little break sometimes. How and when do you know that an image is going to be important or significant? The first impact of the image is instantaneous, something I feel at my core. But then I will print it, put it on my wall and live with it for months. If I love it and never tire of it, I know it will stand the test of time. What excites you about having your work shown in Shanghai this September? Everything about China excites me right now. I’ve been writing in my notebook about China for years. The people, culture, history, customs and everything in between inspire me. Because my work is an extension of me, it’s as if I can finally have a conversation with the Chinese people, even though I don’t speak the language.

Serviceplan creates Le BECK’S: A luxury design twist on the beer can SHAPE

Germany’s legendary beer brand, Beck’s, launches Le BECK’S, a special edition can design.

Hamburg 12 June 2018 – For over 145 years Beck’s has brewed a Premium Pils with carefully selected ingredients and quality that constantly challenges competitors in taste, design, and appearance. Since 1873, Beck’s has established a reputation of being innovators in the beverage category and started producing canned-beer in 1954. But the shape of beer cans have remained essentially the same over the last seven decades. Serviceplan and Beck’s decided to challenge the status quo, and revolutionise the image of beer-drinking by creating Le BECK’S, a special edition fluteshaped Beer can reflecting the superior quality of the ingredients and building a premium perception of the beer can.

da ADVERTISING

75

Following the claim “You make it legendary”, and in order to give the exquisite premium beer the extraordinary shape it deserved, Serviceplan tackled the challenge at the most immediate touchpoint – the can itself. The result is the special edition beer flute: Le BECK’S . Susanne Koop, Marketing Manager at Anheuser-Busch InBev Germany, who is responsible for the Beck’s brand, explains: “Innovation is an integral part of the Beck’s brand DNA, and Le BECK’S helps us to drive it further. Knowing exactly what we need in terms of positioning our brand as a legendary beer and then coming up with an innovative idea that challenges the very core of what a beer can should look like with Le BECK’S is a good example of why we trust Serviceplan as a strategic and creative partner. At the end of the day our consumers love it, we love it, and it perfectly fits our premium image. What else could we really ask for?”

The crafting and design of the Le BECK’S cans from prototyping to finished design involves a luxurious brushed aluminium finish with precision laser and analogue engravings marking the timeless label design. The seamless shape is a revelation in the canned-beer industry and a first in beer-packaging around the world. Le BECK’S is designed to take canned beer to places it has never been before, such as art galleries, classical concerts, and exclusive private and public events. The special edition cans were unveiled on 1st March 2018 with a limited amount of carefully crafted pieces. They were presented to the public at some of the most exclusive events. Due to the overwhelming response, Beck’s is considering mass-producing Le BECK’S for the worldwide beer market.

Within the app, users can even submit pictures of their meals to Lumen nutritionists to get professional feedback on their food choices, helping users reach their individualised goals every step of the way.

da TECHNOLOGY Lumen bridges the gap between research and consumers by placing an emphasis on the education of users; not only providing what to do, but the why behind each action. With an easy to use app interface and AI-driven technology aimed at an individual’s nutritional and behavioural patterns, Lumen teaches users about their bodies, carb vs fat burn and when it’s necessary to use each energy source for maximum results. “Lumen has shown me a new way of thinking about nutrition and diet,” says Kim, a beta tester for more than six months. “It helps me make better nutritional decisions by giving me instant feedback and a tangible nutrition plan.”

The Science The science behind Lumen is based on Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER), the preferred method for determining metabolic fuel. In a single breath, Lumen measures the CO2 production and O2 uptake of a user’s breath to calculate how much energy is being burned from carbohydrates (higher CO2 levels), or fat (lower CO2 levels). An easy to follow breakdown of the science behind the device is available at www.lumen. me/science, with numerous studies conducted to validate the device’s methods. “It was important to us that when it comes to energy sources in the body, Lumen not only educates users but also validates those measurements. They can count on them being scientific, accurate and personal, providing an easily digestible step-by-step guide to harness that analysis and actively lead healthier lives,” said Dror Ceder, Lumen CPO & CMO. “The feedback we’ve received from our beta users and the successful weight loss they’ve achieved has been an incredible validation of our approach to making nutrition personalised and dynamic through real-time data.” The Design Lumen is not only a useful wellness tool; it is a practical lifestyle device. To help breathe life into Lumen, the company partnered with renowned design firm Frog to ensure a seamless user experience of a premium luxury product. Features such as lit graphics to bring the analytical process to life and a magnetic chrome cap to protect the air inlet are results of years of consumer research and refinement, leading to Lumen’s simplistic, yet sophisticated design.

80

da TECHNOLOGY “In a market saturated with me-too wearables, we wanted to help the Lumen team create something truly unique,” says Thomas Sutton, VP Design, Frog. “They have achieved that by combining their unique sensing technology with robust behavioural science, bringing proven coaching techniques into the digital domain. This reflects a very clear vision of their core value proposition - which is about empowering positive change in people’s lives. Our goal has been to make sure that value is reflected in every aspect of the design.” About Lumen Founded in 2014, Lumen’s vision is to revolutionise the way we approach health by making nutrition personalised and dynamic. Creators of the first pocket-sized device for hacking metabolism in a single breath, Lumen reinvents weight management and performance optimisation through science and technology by providing a product that combines accurate measurements with practical design. Lumen aims to empower individuals to take a hyper- personalised, long-term approach to their nutrition and health goals, based on their own real-time physiological data. Learn more at www.lumen.me.

da HOTEL DESIGN “Savona 18 Suites”: a new hotel in the heart of Milan designed by Aldo Cibic. A new expression in designing the relationships between spaces, objects and colours

88

da HOTEL DESIGN

89

A typical Milanese Casa di Ringhiera (a traditional tenement with communal balcony) transformed into a design hotel: this is the Savona 18 Suites, the project that Aldo Cibic has created for the Blu Hotels group. An operation that began with the refurbishment of an abandoned twentieth-century building that Cibic has brought back from the brink. In so doing he has preserved its architectural image and managed to retain the authentic flavour of the Milanese courtyard: representative of the “style” typical of that period. The result is a hotel that evokes the feeling of a mansion - an intimately friendly place which offers its visitors the unique experience of living the atmosphere of age-old Milan. This is all just a stone’s throw from one of the liveliest and most cosmopolitan districts of the city: Via Tortona, which is now a benchmark for the world of fashion and design. The retro structure - expertly restored - forms a great balance with the contemporary furnishings and interior design project, which effectively reflects thinking and aesthetics dear to Aldo Cibic’s heart. Starting from the lobby, you feel as if you have just walked into a real art gallery, with attention paid to every detail. The desk at the entrance is reminiscent of an off-scale Tibetan cabinet, while the yellow mosaic bench, together with the wall graphics, contrast with the neutral tones of the room to create an effect of warm minimalism. Sofas, carpets, chandeliers, mirrors and accessories, signed Aldo Cibic and Paola C. by Aldo Cibic, adorn the living room and the “Petit Cafè”, giving a touch of colour and refined, contemporary inspiration to the rooms: “A cosy living room, with many things lumped together like different fruits”, explains Aldo Cibic. The inner courtyard of 310 square metres has been transformed with sofas and armchairs into a large open-air living room, in which a mural, signed by Cibic himself, stands out. The large courtyard – onto which the most exclusive suites look out on - is designed to be a space open to all, in which the experience of the Milanese Casa di Ringhiera can be strongly felt.

da HOTEL DESIGN

90

Savona 18 Suites consists of 43 rooms, all furnished in different ways to offer a wealth of choice even to frequent clients who are always on the lookout for original experiences. The furnishings vary from vintage objects to contemporary design, with paintings, colours, woods and fabrics giving each room a unique character and personality. The furnishings of the rooms, as well as those of the common areas, can be purchased by guests, allowing everyone to take home little finds: a sign of the growing relationship between interior design and customer experience. There is more and more a widespread trend in the design of accommodation to merge the line between art galleries and meeting places. Aldo Cibic’s design and visions accompany guests from their arrival to their departure, in an enveloping mix of art gallery and living room. The rooms are divided into Home Suite (30 sqm), Suite Savona View (48 sqm), Suite Studio (40 sqm), Queen Room (30 sqm) and Comfort Room (unique room of 20 sqm). “I percieved Savona 18 as a mansion house, with the intention being to turn it into an intimately friendly place in the centre of Milan’s fashion and design district. When you go out into the courtyard you enter the profoundly Milanese experience of living in a Casa di Ringhera, while the mural cites an incomplete skyline, poetic in its muted colours”, said Aldo Cibic.

Aldo Cibic Born in Schio (Vicenza) in 1955, he approached the world of design as a self-taught person. In 1977 he met Ettore Sottsass in Milan. He became a partner of Sottsass Associati, and in 1981 he was one of the founders of Memphis. Cibic immediately adopted the “experimentation as a praxis method. At the end of the 1980s he founded Studio Cibic, and in 1991 he launched Standard, his first self-produced collection. In those days he also started to perform research activities with schools, thus giving life to the concept of service design. Projects such as The Solid Side (1995) and New Stories New Design (2002) encourage a dynamic relationship between Man and space and propose an original way of designing places with reference to social interactions. With the same vocation Microrealities (2004) and Rethinking Happiness (2010), both featured at the Venice Biennial of Architecture, invented stories that aimed at increasing the opportunities for sharing in our collective lives. In 2010 he founded the Cibic Workshop, a multidisciplinary research centre, that still focuses on developing alternative and sustainable projects with a view to enhancing the territory and defining a new awareness of public space. Aldo Cibic teaches at the Polytechnic School of Milan, the IUAV (University of Architecture) in Venice and the Domus Academy. He is an honorary professor at the Tongji University of Shanghai.

MOOOI LAUNCH EXTINCT ANIMAL FABRICS The textile collection is part of a larger surface collection including fabrics, wallcoverings, and carpets inspired by our animal muses. The play between these surfaces created a dimensionality of these creatures. As the Moooi collection evolves, we are looking to bring softness and tactility to our upholstery collection, but in a creative and surprising way. - Christie Wright

They bring a touch of luxury, softness and a splash of natural beauty to upholstered designs from the Moooi collection. Inspired by a selection of unique extinct animal drawings discovered in dusty libraries around the world, Moooi envisions a collection of fabrics based on the animals’ features. To follow this ambitious adventure, Moooi dives into the world of fabrics and leathers, discovering their natural qualities and the different feel of diverse materials. On September 20th, Christie Wright, Art Director for Moooi, discussed with New York Textile Month Initiator & Editor Lidewij Edelkoort the commencement of the new Extinct Animal Fabrics, it’s tactility and their place in the Moooi collection.

The Museum of Extinct Animals - A new design language Moooi sails away on a bold adventure around the globe, digging up the dustiest of museum archives in order to find these invaluable treasures: the drawings of lost animals, trimmed by imagination. With the Museum of Extinct Animals, Moooi celebrates nature’s diversity, stimulatingly stretching the limits of imagination. Highlighting that the most invaluable treasure from past and present expeditions is the unexpected diversity of beauty, in all its forms.

The Extinct Animals collections - Enchanted by the stories of newly discovered animals, some travellers from the past tried to immortalise them on paper. Touched by the beauty of these drawings, by the striking features of the animals, their majesty and mystery resulted in a distinctive Extinct Animal collections. A new collection of fabrics, leathers, carpets and the introduction of Moooi wallcovering, bring the extinct animals back to life!

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make a Giant Canvas! Amstel Radler and Publips Serviceplan Get Passers By Guessing with Billboard Made of 14,000 Lemons in Madrid. Madrid, 28 September 2018 – A popular new Amstel Radler campaign from Publips Serviceplan has sparked substantial national debate, with a giant outdoor canvas erected in central Madrid inviting people to guess the number of lemons used to make it. A 238m2canvas made of real lemons was put up during the summer on Calle Fuencarral, one of the most central streets in Madrid, and posed a challenge for passers-by: to guess the exact amount of lemons used to create it. The outdoor activation was conceived by Publips Serviceplan for Amstel Radler, in a continuation of the “It all starts with a doer.” Campaign. More than 5,500 people entered a competition on www. esdemotivado.com to guess the number of lemons. There were 35,575 visitors to the website during the competition with ten people getting the correct number and winning a prize of a year’s supply of Amstel Radler. Titled “You can’t get this taste without lemons” (“Hay que tener limones para conseguir este sabor”), the canvas is a new twist on Street Art and puts the spotlight on the natural juice that gives Amstel Radler its perfect and refreshing balance. This special action by Amstel Radler in Madrid is the culmination of an outdoor campaign set in motion in May with 930 posters in the cities of Madrid, Valencia, Zaragoza, Alicante, Castellón, Salamanca and Guadalajara. In Madrid, the campaign also featured a digital circuit in which a series of fun animations highlighted the product characteristics, which offered passers-by the chance to take home an Amstel Radler. Publips Serviceplan worked with Media Agency Dentsu RedStar on the activation. No brand campaign has ever featured a giant billboard made of lemons, and the innovative campaign continues the theme of Amstel Radler’s 2018 campaign: ‘Bring out the doer that we all have inside of us’. ‘You can’t get this taste without lemons’ is part of a strategy developed for Amstel by Publips Serviceplan, which forms a part of the new communication platform, “Unchain the and unchain the great”.

Kaikaya, the first tropical sushi restaurant in Valencia, designed by Masquespacio. A year ago Masquespacio was contacted by Mireia, a Valencian, who almost converted to a Brazilian and is a passionate surfer who had the dream of opening the first tropical sushi restaurant in her native city. This was how Kaikaya was born - a project clearly inspired by Mireia’s lifestyle which mixes elements from Japan and Brazilian tropicalismo.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the first Japanese arrived in Brazil with the aim of working in the coffee plantations. As the Japanese nutrition was entirely different from the Brazilian, they were obliged to adapt to the local ingredients. Seeking their own flavours, a new Nikkei Nipo-Brazilian gastronomy flourished with a strong identity which, after more than one century, with its unique flavours and fusions reached international fame. Kaikaya, is the result of this history, bringing the fusion of traditional and methodic Japan with the tropical and exotic, contemporary Brazil to the centre of Valencia. A representation seen both in its menu as well as in its design as described below. Starting from an emblematic venue with vaults, metallic beams and original bricks, the first consideration for the aesthetics was to maintain the existing elements in their actual state, highlighting the beauty of its imperfections left by time. The design needed to contain a strong splash of colour, together with an eclectic style that could mix the two concepts of Japan + Brazil without being conventional. We can immediately recognise the use of materials which are reminiscent of Japan, such as wood and raffia, together with elements which bring in the tropicalismo from the samba country with its colourful patterns made of mosaic tiles, parrots and overwhelming incorporation of plants.

da RESTAURANT DESIGN

114

On entering the restaurant, you can instantly identify the raffia circles which represent the hats used during the rice harvesting in the country of the rising sun and which are merged explosively with the colourful mosaic tiles and tropical plants. Reaching the bar, we again encounter the mix between Japan and Brazil through the traditional Japanese wooden pattern on the bar itself and the coloured patterns inspired by the Brazilian Seventies. Here we can also find the parrot lamps with a palm leaf which were specifically designed for the project as were all the other decorative lamps. On the upper floor on the other hand we find a combination of the original heritage from the space, fused with tropical and Japanese elements – a look which is clearly recognisable through the round seating corners which are half inspired by Brazil and half by Japan.

A great exhibition on European arts and crafts in Venice: “Homo Faber”

Venice, September 2018 | Master craftsmanship was on display in Venice at “Homo Faber”, an exhibition developed over 4000 square metres all over the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, held from 14th to 30th September. Carried out by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, the exhibition comprised 16 thematic sections, each of them curated by international personalities in the fields of art, fashion, culture and architecture. Every section explored a different shade in artistic craftsmanship, and an important role was played by the Fashion world with the section Fashion Inside and Out/Nelle trame della moda, curated by Judith Clark. Being an exhibition within the exhibition itself, the exhibition explored the leading role that artisanal know-how has achieved in the fashion world. When defining the display, Ms Clark called for the collaboration of Bonaveri, which chose articulated handmade mannequins for this audience. The mannequins can replicate every human move, and they showcased the swimming postures in this event. Apart from these iconic elements, the exhibition displayed special garments on fabric bust forms together with a selection of female mannequins from the Schläppi 2200 collection. Some of these had been fully handcrafted to recall the natural elements and the artisanal manufacturing techniques of the garments in the exhibition. The Italian company is a worldwide leader in haute de gamme mannequins. Art and passion, savoir-faire and innovations are just the elements that identify the mannequins crafted by the artisans in the company’s headquarters in Renazzo di Cento (FE).

Fashion Inside and Out/ Nelle trame della moda, was hosted in the former Gandini swimming pool and its garden, both part of Fondazione Giorgio Cini. A charming display evoking summer and nature welcomed the haute couture and avant-garde garments selected by Judith Clark. Amongst others were, the embossed leather skirt from stylist Dai Rees, the hemp dress by Dolce & Gabbana with the sign “fatto a mano”, a Capucci dress scattered with little pebbles, visible stitching from Martin Margiela Artisanal and also wooden beads embroidered over a Chanel skirt. These garments highlighted the crucial role that the collaboration between artisans and stylists plays nowadays, in order to celebrate “everything that human beings can do better than any machine”.

Ducati Corse |D |air® K1 racing suit: wearable technology

• • •

The Ducati Corse racing suit is made with the best materials and technical solutions. Thanks to the integrated personal protection gear, it guarantees safety and comfort. Ducati Corse |D |air® K1 is only available made to measure and is fully customizable.

Borgo Panigale, Bologna, 16 March 2018 - For Ducati, safety comes first. For this reason, technical sportswear is created by selecting the best materials and technical solutions. The Ducati Corse |D|air® K1 racing suit, produced by Dainese, exclusively for Ducati, is actual Smart Clothing, wearable technology made for enthusiasts who want to feel like real racers.

da TECHNOLOGY The technological heart of the suit is the integrated|D |air® system, which is an innovative personal protective gear which uses an airbag to protect the neck, shoulders, clavicles and ribs. The device doesn’t need a physical connection to the motorcycle; it activates electronically in the event of rolling, skidding or high side at speeds above 50 km/h. The algorithm can recognise the impact and dynamic of the fall and decide in a few thousands of a second whether to inflate the airbag. The latter is made with patented 3D technology by Dainese, taking advantage of a microfilament construction which ensures uniform inflation and high protection. The suit’s safety is further enhanced by CEcertified components such as composite protections on elbows and knees and Pro-Armor protectors on shoulders and hips plus seamless aluminium inserts on shoulders, elbows and knees. The other element which is a high priority for Ducati is comfort, guaranteed primarily by the choice of materials. Kangaroo leather, chosen by many professional riders for its particular characteristics, has a reduced thickness that makes it ideal in terms of lightness and fit, as well as having excellent resistance to tears and abrasions. To guarantee freedom of movement, the suit is also equipped with triaxial elastic inserts, a patented construction combined with an elastic element. Chisel & Mouse celebrate the beauty of our industrialised world, combining an artisan’s approach with modern innovation and transformative technologies, capturing life and its big ideas in miniature.

Buildings and cityscapes have captured the human imagination for millennia. Urban landscapes, with their heady mix of architecture, thoroughfares and parks, chart the course of history. They describe the ideals, visions and aspirations of numerous individuals, in a small world filled with big ideas. Pulsing and ever growing, cities and their buildings are like living organisms, providing places of refuge, recreation, employment, learning and more. As curious beings, we explore, admire and enjoy the varied pleasures that cities have to offer. In architecture, for instance, we find a physical and emotional manifestation of an art form which typically moves us to ponder and reflect on its meaning. Indeed, we are fascinated by architecture, so much so that we display examples of great buildings and cities in our homes, schools and offices, in the form of graphic prints and scale models.

Artisan and Innovator Chisel & Mouse is the combination of an artisan’s approach (the chisel) with modern innovation and transformative technologies (the mouse). By capturing life and its big ideas in miniature, the brand celebrates the beauty of our industrialised world. To make a scale model of a building or cityscape requires dexterity, artistry, a keen eye for detail and patience. At Chisel & Mouse, brothers Robert and Gavin Paisley have been casting and handcrafting exact physical representations of architectural landmarks and cityscapes since 2011. Every piece is a finely balanced sculpture and a remarkably faithful impression of an iconic building or world city. Robert and Gavin strive to communicate and depict works that are aesthetically pleasing, thorough and honest in their presentation.

A Punctilious Edit The sculptures made by Chisel & Mouse are perfect when seeking something (perhaps a gift) that is individual and unexpected. What’s more, they are greatly appreciated and admired by design aficionados and novices alike. The brand’s punctilious edit of famous buildings includes the modernist Bauhaus Dessau by Walter Gropius, the brutalist Trellick Tower by Erno Goldfinger, and the art nouveau Helsinki Central Station by Gottlieb Eliel Saarinen. A number of limited-edition models and miniature minis complete the handmade (signed and dated) collection. New additions include the acclaimed modern mid-century classic Farnsworth House, two stunning Nicholas Hawksmoor London Churches and three classic architectural models by François Fouquet from the Sir John Soane’s Museum collection.

Farnsworth House is one of the most revered works of German-born architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The Chisel & Mouse reproduction captures and depicts the structure, make-up and modernist character of Mies’s architectural gem. One can even imagine the house in its natural, riverside setting. The Chisel & Mouse models of Christ Church and St Mary Woolnoth are the brand ’s most complex pieces to date. In presenting the striking front elevation of each church, the models successfully capture the essence of Nicholas Hawksmoor’s imaginative English Baroque style. A homage to one of Robert and Gavin Paisley’s favourite architects, the Christ Church and St Mary Woolnoth models were a labour of love—it took the brothers a year to perfect the first model. Similar to the eye-catching church structures they embody, the models are thrilling and artistic statement pieces to behold. The Sir John Soane’s Museum has asked Chisel & Mouse to make replicas of their model building collection as part of an ongoing project, starting with three architectural models by François Fouquet, a French master model maker. The chosen models are: Monument at Mylasa, Monument at Palmyra and Temple of Artemis the Huntress. Cityscapes For Chisel & Mouse, cities are a model makers goldmine, offering a fascinating opportunity to explore and capture the urban landscape in three-dimensional form. With the brand’s cityscapes, Chisel & Mouse are crafting an artistic representation of the physical geography of a city, capturing in faithful detail its architecture, thoroughfares, parks and waterways. To produce its cityscapes, Chisel & Mouse use satellite data to create a digital model. With this model, a 3D printed version of the built environment is made; combined with traditional moulding and plaster casting, the digital and made, the cityscape is crafted. Accurate to the nearest metre, cityscapes are scaled at 1:5000 and capture an area of 1.5 m x .5 m. In its Classic Series, Chisel & Mouse have made nine precise cityscape models, including the City of London, Manhattan’s southern tip and the area around Venice’s Canal Grande. Each model is enclosed in a removable perspex frame. There are two additional variations of the cityscape series made by Chisel & Mouse: the Blue River Series is similar to the Classic Series, but with the addition of a brilliant blue hue to highlight each city’s waterways; the Large Cityscape Series includes larger models of London (at a scale of 1:2500) and New York (at a scale of 1:5000)—each model is made in resin, and is displayed in a wooden frame.

Gerry has been clicking shutters since he was 18 years old back in 1993 when he studied graphic design and photography. His student camera was a second-hand Ricoh that was broken in such a way that it only worked when you held it upside down. He fell in love with photography in those heady darkroom-driven student days, and here he is, more than two decades later, still doing the same thing. Since then he has refined his craft and discovered that he is a creative photographer rather than a documentary styled one, so he does the bulk of his work in the studio. He is often referred to as “The Light Whisperer”, which he feels is a great honour. He does admit to being obsessed with photographic lighting. He has a passion for working with people and his portfolio is a combination of corporate & industrial headshots, product and pack shots but his heart lies in model photography. “Taking photos is not just what I do, it is what I am” - Gerry Pelser. Away from the camera Gerry teaches and writes. He has published two books, a photography tech manual and a novel (His female lead is a photographer), He blogs (about anything from photography to cricket), and he runs lighting workshops as well as spending time teaching the newbies how to operate cameras. https://www.gerry.co.za

Simons Supports Canadian Makers with Launch of Fabrique1840 Simons Supports Canadian Makers with Launch of Fabrique1840 Simons, the 178-year-old, family-owned fashion retailer from Quebec City, recently launched a new online market called Fabrique1840. The new retail community features an all-Canadian line up of skilled artisans creating everything from home décor and modern art to fashion accessories and stationery. “The motivation behind Fabrique1840 is to create a mutually beneficial ecosystem,” says Peter Simons, Co-owner and President of Simons. “Canadians must establish a destination that supports and celebrates our creativity and values; the road to Canadian economic success is rooted in cooperation and community.” Sharing Expertise to Support Canadian Design Since launching its own, completely custom, e-commerce platform in 2010, Simons has become a leader in Canada’s e-commerce industry with expertise in technology and the processes necessary to support a successful, growing business in the ever-evolving world of retail. Fabrique1840 takes all of that knowledge and infrastructure and shares it with artisanal entrepreneurs to help them prosper in a world dominated by a limited number of global platforms.

da DESIGN “The level of design and craftsmanship in this country is truly remarkable. We want to support these gifted creators to ensure they can make a living from their craft and contribute to the local economy,” says Peter Simons. “Canadian design needs to be as celebrated as Scandinavian or Japanese design, and we want to help tell that story.” Simons’ support of art and design has been part of its identity since its founding. From partnerships with Canadian artists like Douglas Coupland, Guido Molinari and dozens of original Canadian art commissions, to supporting Canadian fashion designers, the family is committed to finding ways for Canadian creativity to flourish. Fabrique1840 is part of that commitment. Fabrique1840 Makers Simons immersed itself into the Canadian artisanal market to hand select a diverse community of more than 50 creators for the launch of Fabrique1840. While the majority of the makers are based in Simons’ home province of Quebec, there is representation from coast to coast with artisans from Vancouver and Toronto as well as Montreal and Quebec City. “Similar to our approach to finding the most interesting and relevant fashion designers for Simons, we are constantly looking for undiscovered Canadian makers to bring to Fabrique1840,” adds Peter Simons. One of the Canadian maker brands involved in Fabrique1840 at launch was Bookhou, a partnership between Arounna Khounnoraj and John Booth who are artists with a multidisciplinary studio in Toronto. They produce a variety of hand-made items including furniture and textiles. “Fabrique1840 will showcase Canada’s best – all of the makers involved are at the top of their game,” says Khounnoraj. “Working with Simons – a family-owned business like ours – gives us the opportunity to grow our own business beyond our current reach.”

da DESIGN Samuel Lambert also participated in Fabrique1840 for the launch. He founded Lambert et Fils, a collaborative lighting design studio based in Montreal, in 2010. “For us, the Fabrique1840 project is an opportunity to get closer to our audience.” The name Fabrique1840 reflects the location of the original Simons store founded in 1840 on Côte de la Fabrique in Quebec City. The word fabrique comes from the Latin ‘fabrica’ which means a person’s trade, craft or workshop. Third-Party Logistics Fabrique1840 also represents Simons’ entry into the world of third-party logistics. Beyond the maker community, Simons has the ability to offer its distribution, fulfilment and digital marketing experience to other businesses that need a trusted partner in order to execute the e-commerce and inventory elements of their businesses. Simons’ new distribution centre, currently under construction in Quebec City, gives the company the necessary capacity to offer full third-party logistics services by 2020. About Simons Simons was founded in 1840 by John Simons as a dry goods store in Québec City and has since built its reputation on being an accessible and inspired fashion brand. Simons is led by brothers Peter and Richard Simons who carry on the family legacy and the brand’s commitment to cultivating creativity, building meaningful relationships with staff, partners and customers, and being mindful of the environment and the communities where they do business. Simons offers an extensive and fashion-forward collection of its own exclusive and innovative private label brands for men and women. This is complemented by today’s leading labels, discovery brands from around the world and an edited collection of Canadian and international designers, making it well-known for its exceptional selection of merchandise which is suitable for everyone. Simons also carries home fashions for the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. All 15 Simons stores are compelling, original environments which inspire customers through fashion, art and architecture. Locations: nine in Québec (three in QuéQuebec City, including its headquarters in Old Québec, plus Montréal, Anjou, Laval, Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Sherbrooke, Gatineau); two in Edmonton (West Edmonton Mall and Londonderry); West Vancouver, British Columbia; Calgary, Alberta; and Mississauga and Ottawa in Ontario.
