Already home to 120 showrooms and 600 international brands, the world’s No.1 design destination is flourishing. Nurturing world-class talent and a growing design community, future expansion plans will see more showrooms in Design Centre East, as well as Design Centre North. The spectacular Design Avenue is already open for access, but stay tuned as it evolves into a unique, majestic space awaiting the arrival of a destination restaurant. All this represents an ambition to increase the breadth of what is on offer. Lucia is the leading commentator on the luxury industry. As launch editor for FT How to Spend It she turned the magazine into cult Saturday reading. She has written for The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Times, Country & Town House and was also editor of the lifestyle pages for the Financial Times. Her many awards include the Luxury Briefing Award for Excellence and the Walpole Medal of Excellence. She delves into the fascinating world of classic hotels as they adapt to changing times (p62).

Dominic has been writing about architecture, design and travel for many years. His articles can be found in magazines such as House & Garden and The World of Interiors, as well as The Times and The Telegraph. His books include ‘The Iconic Interior’ and ‘Making House: Designers at Home’. ‘The Tailored Home’ will be published this autumn. He caught up with Alexandra Champalimaud and Anna Beeber at New York-based studio Champalimaud (p42).

Internationally renowned as an authority on interiors, style and contemporary culture, Michelle is a writer, consultant and TV presenter and the award-winning former editor-in-chief of ELLE Decoration. She is currently working on her first book and recently finished filming a new BBC2/Netflix design show. For ‘Natural Selection’ she decodes why and how we need to connect with the natural world (p31).

Henrietta is editor-at-large for Wallpaper* magazine, as well as columnist and editor for national newspapers and publications, including The Telegraph. She has published and curated several design books and exhibitions internationally. For 'Made to Measure', she discovers why bespoke design is in the spotlight (p37).

Emily is an award-winning journalist and editor specialising in interiors, architecture and design. London-based, she writes for the Daily Telegraph, Grand Designs and the IIDA’s Perspective magazine, among others. In ‘Curated Spaces’ she reports on how considered design means evoking the values that fulfil human needs. (p47).

Arabella is a creative interiors stylist renowned for her pared-back style with attitude. An ability to imaginatively interpret a brief has led her to art direct projects both at home and overseas, including the look of many key events at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. Her artistic flair, use of colour and eye for detail can be seen in ‘Cultivating Success’ (p14).

Style File STAY ONE STEP AHEAD WITH THE SEASON’S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER DESIGNS  The embodiment of bohemian early20th-century France, Jean Cocteau was a distinguished artist as well as a writer. LELIEVRE PARIS has created a collection of wallcoverings based upon his original works, including ‘Cap D’Ail’, pictured.  Otti, Vincent Van Duysen’s second outdoor collection for Sutherland Furniture, is typical of the Belgian architect’s artfully reserved aesthetic. It includes this lounger, featuring high-performance woven rope made by Sutherland’s sister company, Perennials. Head to SUTHERLAND PERENNIALS STUDIO to see it.  Made entirely from unfired leftover clay, Ann Sacks and Kohler’s ‘Crackle’ tile, available at WEST ONE BATHROOMS, shows how manufacturers are rethinking their processes to reduce waste. The glaze, which comes in deep, rich colours that vary across each tile, also contains recycled content.

 These lever handles are the result of TURNSTYLE DESIGNS’ first-ever collaboration. The lauded studio Winch Design, known for its work on superyachts as well as on dry land, has created the Labyrinth collection. The handles’ maze-like texture was inspired by the surface of coral; they coordinate with other products including door-pulls and cabinet handles.

 Overlapping pools of colour characterise HARLEQUIN’s ‘Elliptic’ wallcovering, part of the Momentum 6 collection; the emerald colourway shown captures this season’s vogue for shades of green. The design takes its inspiration from a tower of stacking stones, and has a soft metallic shimmer.

 A new arrival to the South Dome, COLLIER WEBB makes luxury, handcrafted lighting, furniture, mirrors and hardware, such as this ‘Cep’ table lamp in a dark bronze finish. It is made at the firm’s British foundry, where the body, stem and shade are spun by hand from thick sheets of brass.

pays homage to the trend for raffia embroidery, although it is more hardy. The yarn is spacedyed, so the colours change along each strand, making each textured roundel a little different. It is part of the playful Circus collection, available at RUBELLI/DONGHIA. DCCH.CO.UK

Style File  IKSEL – DECORATIVE ARTS is known for its panoramic wallcoverings but its portfolio includes some compelling repeat designs, too. This ‘Plump Tulips’ pattern, inspired by the textiles of the Ottoman Empire, is a new addition. Thanks to digital printing, the scale can be custom-ordered to suit a room’s particular needs.

 Hodsoll McKenzie’s Bridge collection is the work of German designer Fredericke Winkler, who has taken her inspiration from the modernist architecture of the early 20th century. Architects of the period have lent the fabrics their names, including ‘Neutra’, a robust cotton with a zig-zag pattern, and ‘Van Alen’, a geometric embroidery evoking the monumentality of the first skyscrapers.

 DECCA’s ‘Accouter’ dining table is the result of a competition that the furniture brand held last year to customise its standard collection. Accouter Design scooped the prize, and now its visualisation has become reality with a five-piece collection that includes the table, which has a lacquered top with a stainless-steel metal inlay, and cherrywood legs.

 When it comes to upholstered furniture, DAVID SEYFRIED LTD is an indelible listing in every interior designer’s little black book. New pieces such as this inviting ‘Fireside’ stool, part of an ongoing collaboration with Salvesen Graham, demonstrate why it is still thriving after 30 years in business. 10

 It had a revival on the fashion catwalk, and now corduroy is set to make a comeback in interiors, too. GEORGE SPENCER DESIGNS’ Clarence collection adds a twist to this supersoft fabric in the form of a diamond trellis pattern. In 100% cotton, it is suitable for all upholstery and is available in nine colours.

 CECCOTTI COLLEZIONI’s ‘Bloody Mary’ bar trolley, designed by Giuseppe Casarosa, may have a lighthearted name but that should not diminish the serious craftsmanship that went in to it. The brass wheel bringing up the rear of the slender walnut frame had to be specially cast, when the company could not find one that was quite elegant enough.

Style File  C&C MILANO has doubled the size of its showroom, allowing the Italian brand to show more of its homewares, including linen, napkins and cashmere throws. This ‘Manet’ cotton percale bedlinen, with its stitched linen border in ‘Ferno’, can be customised on request, in common with all of its linen collections.

 San Patrignano is an Italian craft workshop with a difference, rehabilitating people with addiction problems and teaching them traditional skills. PAOLO MOSCHINO FOR NICHOLAS HASLAM LTD is bringing the not-for-profit’s magnificent wallcoverings to the UK, including this ‘Boiserie Quercia’ design, which has been digitally printed from a hand-painted original.

 Kirkby Design has teamed up with Transport for London for a second collection of contemporary velvets derived from the moquettes used on the Tube. Each design is named after the Underground line it originally graced: pictured are ‘Bakerloo’ and ‘Metropolitan’, both first introduced in the 1960s. Find them at ROMO.  The distressed finish of this ‘Umbria’ resin table lamp is made by tumbling it with ceramic stones. It is the product of the Cotswolds workshop of DAVID HUNT LIGHTING – a new showroom arrival to the Centre Dome, where an impressive breadth of lighting designs demonstrates creativity and craftsmanship.

 CTO Lighting’s poised ‘Trevi 3’ is named after the Piazza di Trevi, ancient Rome’s junction of three roads, better known for its Baroque fountain. It demonstrates a feat of balance, with its trio of slender arms, each one a different length, terminating in an opal glass globe. Find it at FOX LINTON.

Delicate and feminine, Encore is a collection of passementerie by Lori Weitzner for SAMUEL & SONS. Details include intricate pleats, flowing patterns and a gentle palette; pictured are the ‘Virtuoso’ border, with a pattern made by lasercutting a watercolour-printed sateen; and the charming ‘Tarantella’ pleated border.

 There’s an east-west collaboration behind the ‘Melting Light’ sideboard. Chinese designer Frank Jiang of architecture studio J&A created the piece for Italian brand TURRI – a new showroom in the South Dome. Drawing on an extensive art and architecture vocabulary, she creates elegant retail and residential spaces that are defined by space and mood. Designer Loves MARIA SPEAKE When it comes to sustainable design, Retrouvius sets the pace with its considerate and creative use of reclaimed materials. Maria Speake leads the design studio, working with sophisticated clients from the worlds of fashion, film and media. Named 2019 Interior Designer of The Year by House & Garden, she recently completed a duplex apartment at the renovated former Television Centre HQ in White City, in collaboration with Bella Freud.

n an era when life seems increasingly unpredictable, hectic and always ‘on’, and our working days are spent umbilically connected to the super-smooth screens of our phones and tablets, more than ever before our homes need to become nurturing, sensory, tactile retreats to provide a restorative sense of solace. Besides, today’s informed consumer demands it. We’ve already seen a mainstream rejection of plastic, escalating engagement with environmental issues, and a growing openness to mindfulness and meditation; all amid ever louder calls for more conscious consuming as the popular refrain is buy-less-but-better. Thankfully, the design world has enthusiastically embraced this new mood. The buzzword du jour is biophilia (meaning love of nature); there’s much talk of sustainability, recycling and reuse; and plenty of texture can be seen in the new AW19 collections of fabrics and wallpapers. Direct access to a green space or garden is known to positively impact health, but even gazing upon images of nature is proven to soothe the body and boost the immune system. Thus, wallpaper collections like Cole & Son’s Botanical Botanica, which last year allowed us to romp vicariously through lush forests and flowers, did incredibly well, and its latest offer, Pearwood, continues the theme, with block-printed designs featuring floral tapestries, midsummer blooms and exotic orchards. It’s a trend seen across other fabric houses too. As Claire Vallis, creative director of brands at Style Library says, “At Sanderson we have always believed in the restorative power of nature, and this is borne out in the popularity of collections such as Woodland Walk, which transport you into the countryside. It reminds us of the wellbeing that nature brings, even if we cannot be outdoors.” Likewise, business is buoyant at heritage brand Morris & Co, as appreciation grows for the inherent serenity of William Morris’s respectful odes to nature. For the new season though, the rambling, organic Melsetter collection is in the spotlight, inspired by Morris’s daughter May, appointed head of her father’s embroidery department at the age of just 23. The collection is replete with the stylised birds and flowers so characteristic of the Arts & Crafts movement, but it is detailed with the precision of a needlewoman’s eye. Although such literal verdant escapism is the fast-track to interior calm, the creative fusion of the bucolic with the urban is also paramount. This is reflected in Pierre Frey’s collaboration with design polymath Christian Astuguevieille, where a floral print inspired by an 18thcentury French toile is enlarged, vibrantly recoloured and overlaid with graffiti-like daubs. Also, the Momentum collection by Harlequin, which mixes city silhouettes with close-ups of rock formations, honeycomb and butterfly wings. Claire Greenfield, lead designer at the brand explains: “It’s been developed to bring the often-unnoticed colours of the natural world into our daily lives, whether it be the pink in a sunset or the gold of pollen. We wanted to step back for a moment to appreciate the elegance in all of our surroundings.” For some, the natural references go even deeper. French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance turns to the very origins of the planet in his Raw collection of rugs for Tai Ping. Here minerals, rocks and “the foundation of civilisation” are his inspirations. “By introducing this reference to untamed nature, I aim to translate something raw into a smooth and elegant anchor inside the home,” he says. Such a lively juxtaposition of the old and new typifies this emerging new age of consideration. It’s also evidenced in the enthusiastic use of materials that might previously have been deemed too humble for highend contemporary use – rattan, jute, bamboo, cork – which positively resonate with tactility. At Mark Alexander, known for its luxurious linens, the development of a range of wallcoverings prompted its exploration of hand-woven sisal, raffia, hemp, and abaca, a fibre from the banana palm. As brand manager Mark Butcher points out, “It’s no coincidence that the use of these inherently beautiful and sustainable natural fibres alludes to the late 60s and early 70s, when the ecological movement first began to question consumerism.” Consider too Élitis’s ‘Rocky’ rug in jute, over-printed with blocky primary shapes in earthy colours; the boldly geometric ‘Antibes’ lampshade by Paolo Moschino for Nicholas Haslam Ltd; or Arteriors’ ‘Wilde’ pendant made from rattan ‘peel’ – a material that would normally be discarded. Not to forget Brooklyn-based Scott Bodenner’s ‘Mixtape’ fabric – mohair and silk interwoven with ribbons of old cassette tape, “a combination that feels like moss or bark,” he says about the design, which can found in Miles x Bookshop. Elsewhere nubby linens, heavy weaves, textured yarns and handwoven looks feature predominantly. Ann Grafton, managing & creative director at GP & J Baker believes it is because “people appreciate the subtle variations that appear in natural materials” alongside the appeal of seeing “the hand of the maker, which ensures each piece is slightly different and therefore unique.” This interest in craft and provenance also ties into the important issue of sustainability. "The world now revolves around sustainable sources and respecting nature,” says Bernie de Le Cuona, founder and CEO of de Le Cuona. “With my fabric collections I check the mills, meet the farmers and make sure the fibres are grown safely and are non-toxic to nature. It’s crucial for consumers today to know where a product comes from, how it’s made and how natural it is.” Fox Linton is another champion of luxurious, ethical fabrics for whom sustainability is key. Its latest 100% wool collection, Ingleton, is described as “a celebration of nature, natural materials and the wealth of beauty found in the British landscape” – all rendered in an accordingly evocative colour palette. Ultimately, trends are always both a response to, and a reaction against, the times. And after the last decade of upheaval and turbulence, we need to move towards an approach that reconnects us to our essential humanity. As Krista Stelling, senior vice president of marketing and insights at Arteriors puts it, “the more technology exists in our lives, the more important human and environmental connections become. Successful interior design must include technology as a part of one’s functional life, but it must also feed a person’s emotional core.” It’s a sentiment echoed by Sarah MacGregor, design director at Colefax and Fowler, who says that “the period of excess is over. People are considering carefully what they need for their homes, and more importantly what will stand the test of time.” Yet there’s a tremendous air of liberated playfulness around, too, something perfectly summarised by Patrick Frey, patriarch of Pierre Frey: “I’m very optimistic for the future. More than ever before people are focused on the possibilities of decor. his will be the year that consumers seek to find balance.” So posits a new study by global ethnographical market research firm Canvas8. Indeed, no one could have failed to notice the seismic shift in buying behaviour of late. Whether it’s the backlash against fast fashion or an obsession with more conscious solutions, the indulgent mentality of the past few decades suddenly seems off kilter. But what does that mean for interior design? Cultural phenomena such as the Konmari method, in which tidying guru Marie Kondo recommends keeping only possessions that ‘spark joy’, sit neatly with a corresponding rise in retailers that specialise in handmade goods. There seems to be a collective epiphany. Consumers are changing their shopping habits to empower makers and artisans; and from buying what’s thrust on them towards thoughtfully specifying that which they truly want. As some of the world’s best design can be found at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, knowledgeable teams in the showrooms are reporting the same consumer trend – an increased preference for bespoke products and customised design, and a return to handmade, artisanal techniques. New arrival Turri boasts everything you would expect from an Italian furniture company: skill, integrity and imagination combine in its impressive portfolio of products. Showroom manager Michael Papadriellis is very clear that custom commissions are on the up: “Over the last few years we’re receiving more and more requests,” he says. “This trend for bespoke furniture can be attributed to a quest to possess something unique. Something that no one else has or to better fit a very particular ambiance.” From Julian Chichester, whose handcrafted furniture elegantly combines textures and materials including verre eglomisé, vellum, gesso, brass wrapping and fine saddle stitching, to Davidson – who recently launched Davidson Fitted, creating custom furniture from walk-in wardrobes to bars and bookcases in response to customers’ changing needs; a raft of showrooms are feeling this more conscious, finely crafted, direction. Decca specialises in furniture for hospitality projects and encourages designers to visit the Design Centre East showroom to discuss its bespoke capability and see the extensive library of finishes for themselves. They recently worked with David Collins Studio on the Ritz-Carlton Residences in MahaNakhon, Bangkok making one-off pieces in a mix of natural materials, from cerused oak to walnut veneer, rattan detailing and hammered metal. Renowned French fabric house Pierre Frey is welcoming a ‘haute couture’ strategy for its heritage brand Le Manach. The Toiles de Tours weaves are available to order in 115 designs, 220 colours and three textures, ensuring that the possibilities are almost endless. At the Suffolk mill of Gainsborough Silks, scale, quality and colour can be reviewed with a minimum order of 20 metres, and recent commissions have included a flame-coloured orange and purple cotton/silk damask for The Hospital Club. At Wired Custom Lighting, the clue’s in the name. A new addition to the Third Floor, David Hunt Lighting completes ever more bespoke designs from its Cotswold workshops, often using resin casting and hand-finished metal surfaces. Lincrusta’s new Design Centre East showroom showcases embossed wallcoverings; all are entirely bespoke as they are supplied in a neutral colourway and painted to a client’s brief. The list goes on and on and on.

The reasons are manifold. Firstly, made to measure services, and tailor-made pieces designed for or with a particular client, allow an extra level of connection for the end consumer. Meanwhile designers are beginning to understand the power of the niche – rather than making mass produced objects for anyone, theirs is a model which offers bespoke designs to a highly engaged audience. A new generation such as Olivia Outred, Harding & Read, Tiffany Duggan, Anna Burles and Sophie Ashby, to name but a few, all are interior designers in demand. What do they have in common? An appreciation for craftsmanship and a knack for commissioning designs that stand out. At SA Baxter Design Studio & Foundry, which designs and manufactures architectural hardware from its base in New York Hudson Valley, business depends on offering their clients the creativity they crave. “With the continued evolution of the internet it has become exceedingly hard for designers to differentiate themselves,” says founder and CEO, Scott Baxter. “We’re finding the top designers in the world are now using bespoke commissions as a way to show off their own style, offering clients something unique and special.” In-house artisans have worked closely with star names such as Yabu Pushelberg, Bannenberg & Rowell and Taylor Howes. At Topfloor by Esti, designer Esti Barnes is based in the showroom so clients can meet and discuss their requirements for handmade rugs with her personally. She notes that “bespoke options take visualisation and imagination on both sides – like the idea of a collaboration between maker and buyer.” Encouragingly, our newly established high standards are also infinitely more environmental. Not least for the longevity afforded them by being exceptionally well made. But also for what can be called ‘emotional longevity’ - the personal connection we forge with the objects which punctuate our lives. “Would you lightly discard your own ‘creation’?” asks Marta Pereira, marketing manager at Frato, the new

Portuguese furniture makers on the Second Floor. “We believe not.” According to Lisa White, director of lifestyle and interiors at trend forecaster WGSN, “the key is to be mindful and purposeful about purchasing behaviour, knowing what is being bought and why, prioritising pieces that translate values and have meaning.” But how does this work when we are – as a society – encouraged to be more nomadic and flexible than ever before? One answer is that custom made fixed furniture often adds significant value to a property, while free standing pieces can simply be moved. Either way, it’s a movement that flies in the face of disposable culture. People are seeking equilibrium in all aspects of their lives: “Between humans and technology, brand and personal, global and local,” Jo Allison, editor of that Canvas8 report, writes. Following a year in 2018 when consumers were eager to escape reality and seek out brands that “offered people moments of respite from the daily grind,” for 2019 “we’re seeing a shift away from escaping reality towards a desire to address it.” In Futerra’s new survey of over 1,000 consumers in the US and UK, 96 per cent of people reported feeling that their own actions, such as buying ethically, can genuinely make a difference. And over half believe that they personally can make a big difference. It is a point held dear at Frato. “Our clients have become increasingly more knowledgeable about all things pertaining to this area,” explains Pereira. “In the recent past, the majority of these clients were professionals. But with the opening of several stores, we now feel this knowledge in the final consumer as well. Clients are more confident specifying what they need with greater detail.” In an ever-more-machined world, bespoke pieces of originality and complexity showcase artisanal techniques, respect for materials, and an openness for innovation and integrity. Thoughtfully specifying beautiful design is one – possibly the most – truly sustainable option.

ithin a world that is increasingly interconnected and homogenous, the value of individuality and character has never been higher. This is especially true of the hotel industry, where hoteliers and their guests are increasingly looking for something unique and special. This desire is something that designer Alexandra Champalimaud understands all too well, having created interiors for some of the most characterful hotels across the globe. The list is extraordinary and includes The Dorchester, The Waldorf Astoria and The Pierre in New York, along with Raffles in Singapore, which has just re-opened following Champalimaud’s sensitive reappraisal of this 19th century icon.

“I enjoy spaces that have a soul to them,” says Champalimaud, whose atelier is based in New York. “I enjoy spaces that never fail to evoke a particular feeling when you enter them, but are not overstyled nor pretentious. I think it’s important, as a designer, to create spaces and experiences that relate not only to the end user but also the environment for which they were built. This requires an extensive amount of research and listening to the client and to the space itself. In their own way, these places speak to us and tell us what to do.” Champalimaud herself is a traveller, who has lived and worked in many parts of the world. She was born in Portugal and went to a boarding school in Switzerland followed by studies in the decorative arts at the Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santa Silva in Lisbon. She began working with an architectural practice in Portugal, gaining her first

experience of hotel design, but after the Carnation Revolution she and her family moved to Canada. In Montreal she began working with the practice Mitchell Holland, but within just a few years Champalimaud decided to launch her own firm in the city. The early Canadian projects included offices for the then Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, but the focus was already upon hotel design, with commissions including the Hotel Maritime and Château Frontenac. The atelier began to grow rapidly and eventually Champalimaud relocated to New York, where the practice now has a handful of principals and senior associates, along with a team of 40 plus. Projects range from Miami to Hong Kong, from contemporary buildings to period classics. In every instance, Champalimaud and her studio are searching for what she calls “the essence of place”. “Our projects are creative responses to particular buildings and settings,” says Champalimaud, who is married to investment banker Bruce Schnitzer, with homes in a Jean Nouvel-designed apartment building in New York and an 18th century house in Litchfield, Connecticut. “While we have a vision for all of our projects, historic buildings especially have a huge influence on how we design within them and around them. In our studio, what we produce is usually a visual and tactile response to our findings about a space and its environment.” Raffles in Singapore is a case in point. Champalimaud and her team have restored and revived the flagship hotel, revitalising its restaurants, bars and Arcade while taking the number of suites from 103 up to 115. Dating back to 1887, Raffles is one of those classics that demands a sensitive and subtle touch that respects its essential spirit and style

yet, at the same time, meets all the demands of 21st century global travellers, who expect the finest level of comfort and service, along with all of the amenities and level of performance that requires. Elsewhere in Asia, the studio has also worked on the Waldorf Astoria in Chengdu, China, the Four Seasons in Jakarta and the Niseko Green Leaf Village hotel in Hokkaido, Japan. “It’s important to balance comfort and style,” says Champalimaud. “There’s no point in creating beautiful spaces if you can’t use them and even the most luxurious homes, hotels and restaurants need to have an element of ease to them and make you feel good. As s guest, it’s service and a genuine sense of hospitality that makes a hotel special. The most memorable places that I have stayed in are the ones where people make time to care about my well being. That and a well made bed with good linens.” Champalimaud’s British projects play a prominent part in her portfolio. Born to an English father and Portuguese mother, England has always had a special place in her affections and one of her two sons, Lopo, lives in London with his family, as well as her stepdaughter, Annabel. Projects include not only The Dorchester but also The Gainsborough Hotel & Spa in Bath, the Monkey Island Estate by the Thames in Bray and, now, a new project with Claridge’s that is just getting underway.

“English culture in all its forms deeply resonates with me and it is in my blood,” says Champalimaud, “and I do admire the respect here for history and heritage. Monkey Island is imbued with so many stories, so being charged with honouring and preserving that history through our work is humbling. And I love how The Gainsborough in Bath turned out as well. It’s so elevated and refined that you would never know that the hotel used to be a hospital and it also has this very tangible connection to the city.” Principal Anna Beeber, from the Champalimaud atelier, also has strong connections with the UK, having lived in London for many years during her twenties. She was a key part of the team that worked on The Dorchester and has also been pivotal in developing close links with Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. Beeber has been closely involved with Champalimaud’s two fabric collections for Holland & Sherry, Comptoirs and Framework, which can be seen at the showroom here. This autumn Beeber will be a panel member at a discussion at Focus/19 on the question of character, while Alexandra Champalimaud is also a regular visitor, with favourite brands including Pierre Frey in

Design Centre East and lighting from Charles Paris which is on display in the Rubelli/Donghia showroom. “The panel discussion is focused around the role of design in creating meaningful spaces,” says Beeber. “We have all been to hotels and homes that fall flat and are missing that je ne sais quoi,” says Beeber about her work. “As designers, our job is to make sure that our projects don’t suffer that fate.” And for Alexandra Champalimaud herself, there are still ambitions to be fulfilled. There are new collections coming up with bathroom fitting and accessories brand THG Paris, but Champalimaud also has plans to expand into new areas and disciplines of design. Our studio is very interested in expanding into new formats such as yachts and planes,” she says. ‘We have designed the interiors of a yacht in the past but I would like the studio to do more. I have sailed extensively and have spent thousands of hours in airplanes. They are spaces that we are very familiar with, so it would be a fun challenge for us. I think our creative ethos translates well into those kind of spaces.”

ne of the most pleasing recent developments in interior design has been the blurring of the traditional boundaries that separate different styles. Now, the most desirable spaces look as if it they have effortlessly evolved; within them, the eye alights from one wonderful thing to another. Rooms are now more curated than designed, bringing together art and unusual objects alongside custom-made pieces that together create a highly positive experience. For designers, this is both a challenge and an opportunity: with no rules to follow, they must make their own. Perhaps it’s no surprise then, that two celebrated curated spaces of late were devised by those working outside of their usual sphere. The projects allowed them to express their creative processes and design ideals in the most personal of ways. Fashion designer and creative director of Loewe, Jonathan Anderson, collaborated with champagne house Ruinart to create an exquisite one-room hotel in west London, open for ten nights only. Its centrepiece was a dining table set with Georgian glass and blue and white ceramics, but there were pieces from Anderson’s own personal collections and contemporary crafts, too, such as Joe Hogan’s woven basket taking pride of place in the egg-yolkcoloured hallway. Meanwhile, another name from the world of fashion, Roksanda Ilinčić, took on one of the penthouses at the Gasholders development in King’s Cross, filling it with contemporary sculptural objects and mid-century furniture. Full-length curtains in a refreshing palette of sherbet orange and pink, made from Kvadrat fabric, lent a touch of theatre. These two projects both have a strong narrative behind them. Anderson’s inspiration was an 18th-century French painting,

which supposedly depicts the first-ever champagne bottle in art history; while Ilinčić wanted to represent the female viewpoint in her scheme. Weaving a story is a hallmark of the curated space, creating a tangible human element. Another project, the Berkeley Bar & Terrace, designed by Bryan O’Sullivan of BOS Studio, took some of its design cues from the Grenadiers, who were originally housed in the grounds where the hotel stands. O’Sullivan has included panelling using walnut from the Fulbeck Estate, frequented by the Duke of Wellington, head of the Grenadiers, with an accompanying plasterwork frieze depicting the story of the tree. The project also includes a hideaway snug, set away from the main bar, with a spectacular mural, painted by New York-based artist TM Davy; the pink banquette is upholstered in leather from Whistler Leather and velvet from Pierre Frey. Mohair from Altfield has been used on the back of the bar’s armchairs. “The space is meant to be somewhere that people appreciate more every time they come; the layering of detail should allow for new gems to be discovered with each visit,” says O’Sullivan. “The focus throughout the project was to create a well-curated and balanced space, offering a unique and peaceful place that one could spend hours in over nice drinks with close company. The importance was definitely the quality and intimacy of the stay, as opposed to the quantity of covers.” For hospitality design, particularly, creating thoughtful, layered environments that encourage guests to linger is a must. The TAK Room opened in New York City’s Hudson Yards to great acclaim. Creative director Simon Rawlings of David Collins Studio, in partnership with Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller and VP of branding and creative development, Laura Cunningham, have created glamorous, ordered, layered

“The space is meant to be somewhere that people appreciate more every time they come; the layering of detail should allow for new gems to be discovered with each visit” environments throughout the open dining room, lounge and bar rooms. “TAK Room’s interiors are a timely collaboration of a combined vision and desire to create ultimate hospitality through consideration, care, attention, imagination and commitment to all things extraordinary,” says Rawlings. The firm worked closely with US brand Baker, which supplied much of the furniture. This highly considered approach can also be applied to residential design. Charu Gandhi of Elycion recently created a Shanghai apartment for a young Chinese professional who wanted the narrative to be all about British design. “It’s always exciting to work with a client who has a defined vision and makes highly informed, considered design choices, but we were conscious of not creating a cliché or pastiche,” she says. “We worked with a lot of British and European artisans on this project. We also chose a colour palette with lots of dove grey and pale blues, which were then given a twist through contrasting against areas of black glossy lacquered veneers.” Davidson provided both the bespoke dining table and sideboard in the dining area, while Porta Romana supplied some of the furniture in the living areas. With stunning views of the Huangpu River and the striking Shanghai skyline, the result is informal, relaxed but sophisticated. Showrooms at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour are supporting a need for the more tailor-made approach that is at the heart of extraordinary spaces. “Designers are creating pieces that represent their client perfectly rather than following trends,” says David Arratoon, head of design and project management for Collier Webb, which has opened a new showroom linked to sister companies McKinney & Co and Gainsborough on the Second Floor. A vast sample collection along with examples of the company’s manufacturing processes, from hand-carved to 3D printed moulds, will make it even easier for clients to visualise what’s possible. “It’s an exciting time for us as every project is very different, and we’re fortunate enough to have a large team of designers and craftsmen on hand to enable our client’s design concepts to become a reality,” says Arratoon. Collier Webb’s bespoke work includes

everything from smart brass picture rails and matching chains created for a residential project by Run for the Hills, to a dramatic chandelier for the Nova Building made to a concept design by Morpheus London and lighting commissioned by Sagrada for the Arts Club in London and The Norman hotel in Tel Aviv. Finishes and materials are always best close up, and other showrooms are shifting their aesthetic with an approach that prioritises tactility as a way of enhancing the shopping experience. For example, renowned American design firm Gensler recently redesigned Edelman Leather’s showroom with boxing gloves, handbags and artwork (all made from leather) to set the scene and create an air of discovery, alongside the artisanal beauty of the hides on show. Masterclasses in layering are a further mark of the curated space. Take Kit Kemp, creative director of Firmdale Hotels, whose magpie eye for art and craft as well as an enthusiastic love for fabrics (many of which are sourced from Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, including those from Tissus d’Hélène, Turnell & Gigon, George Spencer Designs and Colefax and Fowler) have helped to shape a very distinctive look. She shares her advice generously through her bestselling books and her website, suggesting ways of ‘dressing’ a chair in unusual textiles to make a statement piece, or deconstructing the art of display. Plans are afoot for The Warren Street hotel, a third venture in New York in downtown Tribeca. Interior designer Rita Konig’s advice on what makes a successful design scheme is succinct: “If you walk into somewhere and want to sit down – that’s a good room.” Konig easily grasps that considered design means evoking the values that fulfil human needs. Curated spaces are inherently positive, and feel personal even when they haven’t been designed exactly for us. And when they have, that sense of satisfaction can be magnified many times. “It’s always hugely rewarding when we unveil the final product and the client sees we’ve fully understood the nuances of their journey and brought it to life, creating an interior that has been conjured specifically for that person in that place in that time,” says Charu Gandhi. “We want our clients to fall in love with design.”

What’s the relationship between interior designers and bathroom designers? It’s a partnership. In my view, the bathroom designer’s role is to make sure the room functions, and they should work hand in hand with an interior designer, who can bring that process of personalisation. I think a lot of interior designers are afraid to get involved with bathrooms because they are quite technical, so the key is to really trust your suppliers. West One Bathrooms, for example, have years of experience, and they understand exactly what a water system should be doing to make sure a fantastic shower works properly, or a bath fills quickly enough.

GAIL TAYLOR Gail Taylor has been based at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour for 24 years; her interior design firm, th2, is opening a new showroom in Design Centre East for its furniture collection, th2Studio. As a specialist in transforming space, here’s her advice on making the most of a small room. Is it important to get the scale right for furniture in a small space? It doesn’t always follow that you should scale down all your furniture, although it is important to maximise floor space and think about multifunctional pieces. We often design pieces that sit on a small hidden plinth or with legs to lift them off the floor to give the illusion of more space. A small space needs to have impact too and this can be achieved by having one or two pieces in a fabulous strong colour. What flexible pieces could work really hard in a small space? A top space saving tip is to put only one or two chairs around a small dining table, and then move over any extra chairs from your bedroom or your desk when you have guests over. Our ‘Simply Versatile’ side table works both inside and out, and can be used as a bedside table, lamp table or clustered to make a coffee table collection. The stand can be used at two different heights and the top can be taken off and used as a tray. Multifunctional at its best!

Do you have any go-to showrooms at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour? Arte is one of my favourite places. They produce some of the most stunning damp-proof wallcoverings, so now you can have a bathroom feature wall in exactly the same way that you would in a bedroom. They’re offering what I’m looking for – a diversity of different textures visually, so you don’t have to just use paint or tiles. Will you share some recent design directions you’ve noticed? There are a lot of textured woods and some colour coming in, so you’re getting a bit more warmth. There is some great flooring – you don’t have to have marble or stone in a bathroom, you can have wooden flooring which looks fantastic, as long as it is properly treated. And I think showers are bigger than ever – we’re heading the American way. How do you create an extra level of comfort and convenience in the bathroom? Ambient lighting on different feeds is really important. A heated towel rail is vital, or even heated walls; I also like to run the underfloor heating right into the shower. A chair so you have somewhere to sit down. And if the shower isn’t big enough to have the towel hanging inside, then make sure there’s space to hang it just outside. The worst thing about having a shower is getting out.

If you don’t have grand proportions, how can you still create something special? Colour can transform a small space: be bold and don’t be afraid to add a rich colour to the walls. If you are not that brave though, then make sure that at least one piece of furniture in the room is in a strong colour or fabric. Do you find it useful to be based at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour? When we first moved here it was still finding its true identity. Since then it has developed into an amazing hub for the very best suppliers and interior design related businesses. o create a fine hotel – one that has about it an unmistakable glamour, whose distinctive allure lingers long in the memory – isn’t easy. In the last few years, the tucked-away boutique hotel, the one where you traded in a little luxury for some idiosyncratic charm, seemed to be winning most of the accolades; but in recent times the mood has changed. The classic hotel with its grandeur, its sweeping staircases, its roots in the history of the cities where they are mostly found, its romantic stories accumulated down the years, has begun to regain its hold on the human heart. They are being reinvented and discreetly modernised with 21st century levels of comfort being added to the rich historical narratives that are such a quintessential part of their charm. Take Rocco Forte Hotels. Its recently re-opened Hotel de la Ville, housed in an 18th-century palazzo in a peerless position atop Rome’s Spanish Steps. Olga Polizzi, deputy chairman and design director, and architect Tommaso Ziffer, have been heavily inspired by The Grand Tour, that rite of passage for the highly educated well-born during the late 17th and 18th centuries. A full immersion in Italy’s cultural heritage was essential and a visit to Rome lay at the heart of it all. At the Hotel de la Ville, the exuberant style of the 18th century is given a contemporary twist by Ziffer. “A purposefully created poetic chaos, creating rooms that are works of art in their own right,” is how he has described it, but no visitor could fail to be charmed by the handmade wallpaper from Rubelli and Dedar, the rich Italian fabrics and tapestries from Zardi & Zardi at Watts of Westminster, the imposing Roman marble trapezophorus (traditionally found in ancient Roman palazzos) that does duty as a concierge desk, and many other neo-classical references. Next spring the hotel group is opening a restored and revived Villa Igiea in Sicily’s Palermo. A truly grand hotel where Tsar Nicholas II, Kaiser Wilhelm and George V all came to stay, and where in the 1950s and 1960s the cream of Hollywood used to romp, it is in an unimaginably beautiful setting looking right over the port of Acquasanta. THE APARTMENT Broosk Saib’s riverside apartment has a feeling of sophisticated luxury. An immaculate setting is filled with art, clever references and thoughtful detailing, with bespoke high gloss panelling and shelving by Davidson playing a central role throughout. When it comes to historic hotels, there are few as iconic as the Plaza, overlooking Central Park. The palatial Royal Suite designed by Champalimaud is lavishly appointed, drawing a line from the property’s gilded past to its vibrant present. To get the look, a classic ‘Georgian Panel’ by Lincrusta is offset by the timeless elegance of a ‘Archetype BO1’ rug from Tai Ping, a ‘1968’ side table from Gallotti&Radice and a ‘Putney’ table lamp from Arteriors. Rich curtains in ‘Audley’ in grape from Zoffany are complemented by a metal and Perspex ball finial from McKinney & Co. The ‘Jak’ bar cart from Arteriors is the perfect spot to mix martinis.

THE MORNING ROOM In its former life as a private house, Beaverbrook has seen guests ranging from Winston Churchill to Elizabeth Taylor. Now a hotel, designer Susie Atkinson has sympathetically brought it back to life, imbuing the rooms with a romance and style that pays tribute to its glamorous past. To get the look, introduce an eclectic mix of comfortable furniture upholstered in fabrics like ‘Ottoman Stripe’ from George Spencer Designs, pretty ‘Odaware’ by Armani Casa Exclusive Textiles at Rubelli or a ‘Linara’ plain from Romo. Add a ‘Buttoned Box’ stool by David Seyfried Ltd with a deep fringe from Turnell & Gigon and a ‘Chambord’ chandelier with crystal drops from Vaughan. Sculptural elements include a ‘Man 1’ table lamp from Porta Romana.

THE PENTHOUSE Filled with natural light, thanks to the angular rooms concocted by architect Wilkinson Eyre during its redevelopment, the Gasholders penthouse by fashion designer Roksanda Ilinčić reflects her penchant for block colour and shape. SCREEN SIREN A trained artist who subsequently went into the film industry and, finally, product design, Pietro Russo has designed this ‘Shield’ screen for @gallottieradice. With its four leaves in pale tanganika timber, complemented by a brass frame with mirrors, its playful personality shines through.

WELL ROUNDED At home in the most luxurious of bathrooms, ‘Taizu’ is new from @victoria_albert_baths. This striking 1500mm-diameter bath is the result of a new collaboration with Steve Leung, the acclaimed Hong Kong-based architect, interior and product designer.

EYE OPENER The enduring beauty of silk velvets from the Ottoman era are renowned for their opulence and composition, often with one motif placed within another. Derived from a 16th-century document, @ iksel_decorative_arts introduces this stylised ‘Eye of the Princess’ pattern, adding it to its collection of all-round repeats for fabrics and wallcoverings.

SHAPELY SILHOUETTE Italian designer Andrea Bonini is the name behind many of @turri_madeinitaly’s pieces, including this ‘Zero’ stool, inspired by the clean-lined geometry of mid-century architects such as Vittoriano Viganò and Carlo Scarpa. See it at the newly opened showroom.

New&Now HISTORY REPEATING Described as “a feast for the senses”, @zoffanyfw’s Antiquary collection includes this ‘Pomegranate’ linen, a fabric version of the brand’s wallpaper of the same name, based on a mid-18thcentury design. The bold pattern is tempered by the fabric’s naturally time-worn finish.

RAISE THE BAR Chinoisierie is chic: this handpainted ‘Zhao’ bar cabinet by @oficinainglesalondon is a statement piece worthy of the most opulent room. Shown in cherry wood with a black finish, it can be customised to suit.

FADE OUT ‘Galeecha’ from Casamance @colony.london is a printed fabric that looks like a patchwork of faded patterns, in a soft blue-grey colourway. It is part of the Ceylan collection, whose inspiration is drawn from the textile heritage of India.

AT EASE Cossetting comfort is on the design agenda, and the ‘Gentleman’ armchair for @poliform_official is just right for creating a sense of ease. Designer Marcel Wanders is known for introducing a little humour to his work, and in this case the chair’s exaggeratedly high back offers a new take on a more traditional style.

SOFT LAUNCH The vogue for velvet shows no sign of slowing down, and @gpjbaker is fuelling the trend by introducing some of its best-loved designs in this soft and tactile material. The Signature Velvets collection includes the watery ‘Nympheus’ (on stool) shown here with ‘Petropolis’ (on cushion), inspired by an antique oriental carpet.

A LITTLE SHIMMER This ‘Money Plant’ rug is the result of @topfloorbyesti’s recent collaborative work with French artist Nicolas Galtier. His abstract paintings use mixed media, with shimmering metallic leaf alongside paint and pigment – opulence that has translated beautifully into art for the floor.

SURFACE VIEW These heavily textured vases are new to the @delecuona showroom, along with wooden chairs and woven baskets – all designs that support the brand’s ethos of organic elegance and complement its new fabric collections.

WELL CAMOUFLAGED Go wild with @artewalls’s ‘Grant’ wallcovering, which features a dazzle of zebras tessellated amid black-and-white stripes. It’s part of the Wildwood collection, where a menagerie of other animalthemed designs can be discovered. ROCK SOLID A tribute to a childhood spent on the wild coasts of Brittany, French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance’s Raw collection for @taipingcarpets turns solid geological features into something soft. ‘Hov 1’, pictured, is based on a delicate pencil drawing, with an organic outline that accentuates its uncannily threedimensional appearance.

RIDE THE WAVE ‘Bali’ is new from @jimthompsonfabrics. This silk fabric has a wave pattern adapted from a vintage Cambodian textile, and is part of a wider collection that has reached into the archives to rediscover lost treasures, updating them for modern use.

FINE FINISH @lincrusta.official’s deeply embossed wallcoverings can look dramatically different according to which paint effects are used to finish them: this ‘Chequers’ design of small-scale squares has been brought to life with turquoise and copper. Find its new showroom in Design Centre East.

INTRICATE WORK Geology, time and the elements inspired Alexander Lamont’s Peninsula range, which has an emphasis on finishes that require meticulous workmanship, including parchment and straw marquetry.
