elcome to our new issue. As an international design destination, we are swift to champion the very best at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. This confident approach is evident in the forthcoming pages, which are rich in personality; layered with vibrant colour, eclectic points of inspiration, as well as playful touches. The most memorable interiors tend to be put together with passion; speaking of history, craft, travel and the desire to be different rather than to conform. ‘Buy what you love’ is a common piece of advice in the design world and this issue is brimming with ideas for you from a unique collective of 120 showrooms. The momentum at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour is simply undeniable. We are committed to being the world’s No.1 design destination, and the home to over 600 leading interior brands. Work is progressing at a pace on the spectacular Design Avenue and the third floor has a roster of stunning new spaces. So, here’s to audacity and ardent creativity; and to our hopes for the future. Together, we are making visible the astonishing capacity of the human imagination, and its ability to allow us to connect with one another – to share our design experiences.

Style File STAY ONE STEP AHEAD WITH THE SEASON’S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER DESIGNS FOX LINTON is launching ‘Springtide’, its first double width wallcovering. The subtle pattern mirrors the intricate markings on coastal rocks and cliffs left by waves over time. See them in the newly refurbished showroom.
A new generation is discovering the sculptural shapes of handcrafted pottery. This ‘Shawnee’ terracotta lamp by ARTERIORS was first formed on the potter’s wheel, before the banded textures were etched and stamped by a skilled artisan.

Without show and sparkle, soft gold is creeping back into interiors. Fine lurex thread is being used to give richness to weaves, while at SIMPSONS this ‘Gramercy’ side table is subtly chic in gold herringbone leather.
Contrast makes a room pop. A geometric like this ‘Kazbek’ flamestitch from No 9 Thompson at JIM THOMPSON strikes the perfect balance, while different yarn weights make it soft.
Exuberant archival patterns are omnipresent this season. Take Braquenié’s Comptoir d’Orient which features a riot of flowers across silks and embroideries. By mixing them up, playing with scale and introducing joyful colourways – perfect for the traditionally minded aesthete and the daring alike – an important heritage has been given new impetus. See them at PIERRE FREY.
Layers of chalky white, matt plaster – favoured by masters such as Giacometti and Serge Roche – are recognised by the design cognoscenti for their subtle textural properties. New to PAOLO MOSCHINO AT NICHOLAS HASLAM LTD is the sculptural ‘Nicolae’ lamp that stands at 1.5m tall and casts a gentle glow. DCCH.CO.UK

Style File Lighting enhances the mood, often combining functionality with artistry and decoration. This poetic ‘Carisbrooke’ lantern by VAUGHAN with its sculpted leaves on a textured brass frame is defined by its large scale.
Anthology’s Volume 06 wallcoverings present eyecatching textural details inspired by industrial spaces, fabricated walls and polished natural and man-made surfaces. See them at STYLE LIBRARY.
LINCRUSTA, purveyors of deeply embossed wallcoverings, is a new addition to Design Centre East. Mirroring the geometric patterns favoured in English stately homes, ‘Elizabeth’ is a regal design that adds a sense of grandeur.
With its eclectic approach to design, MULBERRY HOME enjoys a reputation for craftsmanship and individuality. A perfect example of modern English country style, this stitched ‘Dazzle’ fabric has a bohemian elegance that illustrates the playful aesthetic that is in the ascent.
Italian textile house DEDAR’s collections are characterised by technical and aesthetic excellence. Don’t be fooled by the sunny feel of this ‘Campus’ fabric. The geometric panama weave is layered onto a polypropylene base to make it suitable for indoors and out.
French designer Christophe Delcourt is known for creating contemporary furniture like this ‘Leo’ side table that showcases his passion for superlative craftsmanship and natural materials. See more at GMR INTERIORS. 10

Seeing designs in situ has never been more inspiring. Head to Ground Floor, Design Centre East. GP & J Baker has partnered with interior designer Ben Pentreath to create a roomset using the iconic ‘Magnolia’ archive fabric.
BELLA FIGURA debuts its new larger Centre Dome showroom. On display are an array of spectacular pendants and wall lights, alongside table lamps in jewel colourways. This ‘Acorn’ lamp is wrapped in a generous, abstract glass ribbon, lending it an undeniable individuality.

grand hotel is like an old friend. You may spend years apart, but when you meet again the connection sparks back into life in a moment and the relationship is rekindled. The French designer Jacques Garcia has many such friends, who he has helped over the years. They include legendary hotels such as La Mamounia in Marrakech and the Danieli in Venice, where questions of personality and provenance are all important. But there are also fresh projects, where the challenge for Garcia is to create a welcoming sense of character from scratch, while introducing the many layers of opulent comfort for which he is renowned. Most recently, Garcia has been working in London where he has just completed the design of a new hotel in Holborn christened L’oscar, owned by hotelier Duncan Shakeshaft. Set in a former baptist church dating back to the late 19th century, which had fallen into disuse and dereliction, the 39 bedroom hotel takes inspiration from the building itself and the complex personality of writer Oscar Wilde. “The idea for L’oscar came to me during my first encounter with the setting, which is totally atypical for a hotel because it was a religious building,” says Garcia.“The elements that remained and that are authentic to the period were very inspiring and almost naturally the spirit of the place made me think of Oscar Wilde. What better way to recall the memory of such a mythical man?” Garcia already has a history with Wilde, having previously restored L’Hotel in Paris’ rue des Beaux-Arts where the writer died in exile in 1900. A continuing source of fascination for writers, artists and designers, Wilde helped to guide the spirit of L’oscar, which is full of lavish detailing, evocative motifs - such as peacocks and sumptuous flora – as well as rich, deep colours such as purples, reds and golden tones. Statement fireplaces form focal points in many of the bedrooms, including the suitably theatrical L’oscar Suite. The former chapel now holds the opulent Baptist Grill, with a menu by executive chef Tony Fleming, who won a Michelin star at his previous address. Importantly, L’oscar feels as though it has always been here but also has the level of comfort that one expects from Garcia’s work. “When I started decorating hotels in the Nineties I saw so many sanitised hotels in which it was unthinkable to socialise or flirt because the lighting was so awful and the seats uncomfortable,” says Garcia. “But I soon found out that designing hotels was a way of changing people’s attitudes and to do this I lowered the chairs and seats at the Hôtel Costes or Le Royal in Deauville. Indeed, just like our own living rooms, we are no longer sitting on high chairs just as women no longer wear corsets. Chanel began by removing the corsets and I carried on by lowering the tables and chairs. For me, there are three secrets in a hotel – mystery, comfort and light.” Garcia knew from a young age that he wanted to be a designer. His parents encouraged an early interest in drawing and the arts, touring museums and noting the architecture around them. By the age of ten he became interested in antiques and by fifteen was an active antiquary. This passion for collecting and antique dealing continued during his studies at the Met de Penninghen and the École des Métiers d’Art.

“Character, individuality, comfort and provenance remain all important” He also began buying abstract, conceptual art by Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, Josef Albers and others. During the Eighties Garcia started working for private clients, designing residences in town and country. He began to develop his own unique approach, fusing neo-classicism with modernity and functionality with fantasy. There was a deep rooted structural integrity and an insistence on fine detailing and craftsmanship, along with the steady and colourful thread of opulence. “I find that a world without colour is a world without flavour,” says Garcia. “I came out of a very special world because at the age of eighteen I had two passions – Versailles, with all the panache that this represents, and conceptual art. This duality is still present in my life and my career. I prefer too many ideas than an absence of ideas but I’m also against the “taste of the day”, because I think that’s deeply old fashioned. As Chanel said, ‘I hate fashion because fashion goes out of fashion’.” Garcia was also able to experiment upon himself with the design of his Parisian home, Hôtel de Mansart, and an extraordinary project in Normandy – a 17th century chateau known as Champ de Bataille. Once home to the Comte de Créqui and the Ducs d’Harcourt, the chateau had been used as a hospital for 45 years. Since 1992, when he bought the property, Garcia has devoted himself to the restoration of the house and its gardens. The chateau is now open to the public, but is also a home that serves as a vast ‘laboratory of ideas’. The chateau, in itself, has the scale of a hotel. Garcia argues against type casting and pigeon holes, yet has found that many of the private residences that he has designed – and continues to design – remain confidential and seldom published. The spotlight turns, therefore, to the exemplary portfolio of hotels and restaurants that Garcia has created – or recreated - around the world. As well as new hotels like Nomad in New York and Vagabond in Singapore, the list includes legends like Le Foquet’s brasserie in Paris and La Mamounia. “I discovered La Mamounia at the age of eighteen and that’s what gave me my fascination with the Orient,” Garcia says. “I had to reinvent everything you see at La Mamounia and we have gone from a 70 room hotel to 330 rooms. But it is a great success and was named, again, the best hotel in the world.” These projects draw on the rich fabrics, trimmings and wallcoverings of brands such as Pierre Frey, Dedar and Watts of Westminster, who are also represented at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. Garcia works, of course, within a world of refinement and luxury. But, for him, character, individuality, comfort and provenance remain all important. “The word ‘luxury’ is difficult because it’s always linked to money,” Garcia says. “But for me luxury is associated with culture. Talking about culture means a beautiful setting, how to set a table, how to place the cutlery, how to arrange the flowers and then to have a chef who serves something divine, as well as having a good pillow and a good bed, along with beautiful lighting. For me, luxury in a hotel is all of this. The rest are extras but, for me, nothing to do with luxury.”

how-stopping design was an intrinsic component of the very first department stores. From the elegant glass roof of Le Bon Marché in Paris, engineered by Gustave Eiffel, to the Beaux Arts flourishes of Macy’s in New York, these buildings were not just an expression of civic pride but not-so-subtle persuaders to enter, enjoy and pick up a little something to take home. Today, these grandes dames are still greatly loved, and many are doing exceptionally well in a sector that is not known for its economic buoyancy. “One of the key factors driving their success has been their reluctance to stand still and a willingness to invest in order to maintain their status,” says architect Simon Mitchell, co-founder of Sybarite, and a specialist in retail architecture. Sybarite’s recent in-depth report into to this sector found that they were “rethinking their purpose for the 21st century”. The message is that investing in a sense of place pays off. Always ahead of the curve, Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour’s exciting expansion plans not only address the changing face of retail worldwide, but also the shopping needs of visitors. Work is underway on the Design Avenue, a spectacular 12,000 square foot space, that will connect the domes and Design Centre East, and create a game-changing addition to the renowned premier design destination. The architectural project is about much more than creating a dramatic first impression (although, the striking curved entrance and the sheer scale of it rising to a monumental 15m will certainly do that). This new iteration of Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour will trace the same developmental arc that
“The transformative build will introduce an unparalleled space specialising in curated luxury events unseen anywhere else” Mitchell describes, and will enrich the overall experience of a visit. The transformative build will introduce an unparalleled space specialising in curated luxury events unseen anywhere else. As well as featuring a restaurant, the impressive height of the Design Avenue will enable it to host a roster of highly creative exhibitions and shows that will enhance its world-class events programme. The one-of-a-kind space will act as the heart of this already-thriving creative hub. “Consumers are becoming less obsessed with brand and value, and measure luxury instead according to the ‘uniqueness’ of an experience and by the emotional impact it has,” says Mitchell. “This is driving a change in focus from sales per square foot to inspiration or experience per square foot. Balancing the two makes for a better business and a more engaging customer experience.” Sybarite’s SKP in Beijing, a former shopping mall turned department store, has been a massive success story in China thanks to its strong corporate identity (the logo is even on the lift buttons), elegant design that has had luxury brands flocking, plus event and gallery space. The world’s best architects are being commissioned to reinvent heritage emporia to suit this contemporary audience – people who might want to see a catwalk show to deepen their understanding of a

product, then head for the VIP suite for some personal shopping before dining in style, all without leaving the building. Adding flexible events space is a common feature of these projects, as is the reintroduction of natural light, such as the glazed rooftop extension that OMA added to Berlin’s KaDeWe, or the wavy glass facade that Japanese firm Sanaa proposes adding to La Samaritaine in Paris (now owned by luxury conglomerate LVMH). Existing historic structures are proving just as compelling to make into new retail destinations. Architect BIG is turning an art deco bank on the Champs-Elysées into a new Galeries Lafayette: tellingly, its CGI of the dramatic central atrium depicts not the expected beauty hall, but a catwalk event. OMA’s reworking of the 16th-century Fondaco dei Tedeschi in Venice is an outstanding example of a historical building repurposed as retail, with its near-irresistible crimson escalators climbing to a rooftop viewpoint and events space. What does all this say about how we have changed as consumers? Alistair Parker, a partner at Cushman & Wakefield and the author of a recent global market report on department stores, explains how our viewpoint has shifted. “In the 1970s, we’d broadly beyond buying what we needed to buying what we wanted. Now, I think we’ve even gone beyond that: we hope that what we buy defines us as people, so we try to look for authenticity.” Top department stores, he says, are proving themselves wonderfully attuned to that need – as is Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, with its showrooms’ increasing focus on provenance, craftsmanship and bespoke design. The new Design Avenue will be used to champion the industry at a deeper level, with cultural collaborations, pop-ups and exhibitions that will broaden understanding of a particular subject. Past shows such as Asia Week, in association with Asian Art London, and Evolution of Tradition, which showcased the incredible work of bespoke furniture designer-makers, have already proved successful in reaching a wider audience. This major upgrade is a sign of Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour’s confident vision, and showrooms are expressing the same measure of confidence by moving to bigger and better spaces within the Design Centre. Brands on the move include Sutherland Perennials Studio (which has opened a second showroom on the third floor), Bella Figura, Gladee Lighting and Fox Linton (which is linked to Jim Thompson
next door). Passementerie expert Samuel & Sons is doubling its size with a new space in the Centre Dome. “London was our first foray outside of the United States, and when we first opened six years ago, we were unsure how our collections would be received in the UK. Needless to say, it’s been wonderful to become a part of the Harbour design community,” says its president Michael Cohen. “Our existing space had limited our ability to show the full selection of items on spools. Furthermore, it limited our ability to sit down with a client, which can be especially helpful for bespoke trimming projects,” he continues. “The new showroom will give designers more space and allow them to see more product.” These newly expanded showrooms are joined by some newcomers. Design Centre East welcomes heritage wallcovering specialist Lincrusta and bespoke furniture-maker Ventura, while the North Dome will see the opening of Belgian carpet brand Thibault Van Renne, a space that will also feature furniture from O&A London. Arlene McIntyre, creative director of Ventura, says that the Irish-founded company “has been working with UK based clients for some time now. It made complete sense for us to have an outlet in London where those interested in what we do can simply come in to visit us, view our bespoke furniture lines and speak face to face with a member of our team. We offer a full turnkey service – from conception to completion – and this showroom will illustrate the depth and breadth of our services and products.” In the 1850s, the founders of Le Bon Marche were said to have wanted “a new kind of store that would thrill all the senses”, while Harry Gordon Selfridge asserted that “a department store should be a social centre, not merely a place for shopping.” Incredibly, despite unrecognisable changes in the way we live and shop since then, these words ring truer than ever: retail is going back to its roots.

nterior design does not stand still. There is a new global outlook appearing across hotel and residential projects, with professionals eschewing pared-back design for something more multi-layered, comfortable and confident, with a strong sense of place. This desire to be rooted in local culture, yet also bringing in international influences, can be seen in Soho House Mumbai, the private members’ club’s first Asia outpost for the city’s creative crowd. “We were going for a very relaxed, comfortable and residential look – something that makes you immediately relax,” says Soho House’s design director Linda Boronkay. “We weren’t holding back on being in India; the light is fantastic, so bright and warm, so we just went for it, with lots of lovely colours and patterns.” Her team worked on sourcing numerous pieces from India, but it was to Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour they turned to for sophisticated fabrics from showrooms such as Lewis & Wood, Tissus d’Hélène and Pierre Frey. This bold, colourful aesthetic can be seen throughout, including the reception areas and the cinema. “We used Lewis & Wood’s ‘Kimono’ as a wallcovering. Cinemas are the most glamorous areas in our clubs. There’s a level of escapism, in this case, it’s very eclectic in terms of the patterns that we used.” Rita’s Konig’s interiors for Hotel No. 850 have a homefrom-home vibe and bring her chic, collective style to West Hollywood. Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour was an essential resource, “I used a lot of Quadrille fabrics at the hotel and Dedar trims, which are beautiful. All the corridors have different coloured felt on the walls with contrasting grosgrain trim,” says Konig. She was delighted to select a Sonia Rykiel fabric from Lelièvre Paris in the sitting room, “that I have been longing to use for years.” In terms of flamboyance, richness and also making sure the design chimes with the local narrative, it would be hard to find a better example than Russell Sage’s ambitious interiors for the Fife Arms in Braemar, Scotland. The opening of this country house hotel in Hampshire, owned by billionaire Gerald Chan, has been much anticipated. The interior by designer Ben Thompson is both elegant and informal. Original Scottish furniture is mixed with the fantastic historic and contemporary art collection, which includes work by Lucian Freud, watercolours by HRH The Prince of Wales and a Richard Jackson chandelier in the lobby. The scale of the project is staggering. “There are 16,000 items in the building,” says Sage, “everything we did, we had to make sure it was authentic, from the recreated vintage wallpapers to bespoke tartan and tweed. We used Watts of Westminster a lot in the bedrooms as the client was after full-on Victorian gothic drama and Watts do it brilliantly.” For Sage, it was all about the strong colours, “one of the things we have done in many of the bedrooms and many of the hallways is big dramatic patterns,” he says. Other wallcoverings sourced from Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour included those from Cole & Son and Morris and Co. and Sanderson at Style Library. Designers are taking this confidence to mix things up into residential schemes too. Vanrenen GW Designs is known for a characterful look, which is shown off to full effect in a recent London townhouse project. “It’s always particularly inspirational when a client is brave enough to give us more free rein,” says design director Louisa Greville-Williams. “It’s exciting for us that pattern and colour, chintzes and bold florals are making a big comeback, for example, Jean Monro and

new, silvered oak floors and boiserie walls were used to give it an alpine feel. Gillette turned to Fox Linton and Decca for the armchairs and dining chairs in the salon, Porta Romana for the bronze ceiling light (and many of the other lamps in the apartment) and Vaughan for the large, red ceramic lamp bases, which pick up the red and white theme of the room, while carpets throughout were from Stark Carpet. Studio Indigo’s imaginative interior design for superyacht Brigadoon were also paired with the client’s art collection and furniture. With a tight three months deadline, “having the Design Centre on its doorstep was enormously helpful,” says creative director Mike Fisher, “since the majority of the fabric, furniture and equipment were sourced there.” The rich array of projects around the globe, from ski chalet to superyacht by way of Soho House Mumbai show how Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour is at the forefront of creative design, providing designers with a treasure trove of ideas and inspirations from which exciting interiors flow.

A-list designers Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen of Nicholas Haslam Ltd, who also have a Design Centre showroom, are experts at blending unusual pieces together. This dining table was based on one from Yves Saint Laurent’s Parisian apartment and is paired with an 18th century Coromandel screen and a pair of commodes made for the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires. “As a contemporary twist,” says Vergeylen, “instead of using chandeliers, we pierced the ceiling with 158 Perspex stalactites connected to fibre optic cables to provide the lighting.”
Pierre Frey’s Le Manach and Braquenié fabrics and wallpapers can all be found in the Design Centre.” There is wallpaper and fabric from Tissus d’Hélène for the bedrooms, while in the sitting room, the chair fabric was found at Turnell and Gigon, a golden chest of drawers came from Julian Chichester and carpets from Tim Page Carpets were used throughout. Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour is also a regular haunt for interior designer Natalia Miyar. “We want our schemes to last and continue to feel fresh so by using a multi-layering of varying textiles in projects, we can ensure these can be moved around between rooms to keep things interesting and current.” When Mark Gillette had the challenge of creating a twobedroom, two-bathroom apartment out of three former bedrooms in the famous Badrutt’s Palace hotel in St Moritz, he headed to Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. The secret of the project was to find items that went with the “wonderful views” and, equally importantly, with the client’s art collection which, “includes an ancient Greek bronze helmet, an Andy Warhol drawing, pieces by the 18th century sculptor Messerschmidt and a number of early Renaissance Old Masters.” Additionally,

Belgian architect and designer Vincent Van Duysen welcomed the opportunity to work with Sutherland Furniture on the Franck series of garden tables and chairs because it enabled him to see his simple, modern aesthetic “transported to the outdoor environment”. Similarly, Londonbased David Collins Studio has recently created its first fabric range, working with American furniture brand Baker. “There is magic to be made when different creative forces come together” Our most recent collaborations, in particular with Windsor Smith and Celerie Kemble, allow the brand to burst outside of our usual aesthetic and blend our heritage look with fascinating and exotic influences.” Collaborations also provide brands with an opportunity to demonstrate their expertise in new areas. “As manufacturers of furniture rather than designers, we love being pushed to achieve new technical and aesthetic boundaries,” says Gemma Allman, European deputy MD of high-end furniture manufacturer Decca. Recent examples include a bespoke collection of furniture to house a range of minibar and premium hotel room safes produced by the Swedish firm Dometic, and some bedroom furniture for leading hotel designers HBA London. Decca has a long-standing relationship with the brand, but this project, created for HBA London’s stand at the trade fair Sleep + Eat, was a three-way collaboration with the Natural History Museum. The beside tables contain preserved butterflies, scorpions and a host of other creatures from the Museum archives. Belgian wallcovering company Arte rarely teams up with external names, but when Marcel Wanders’ innovative Dutch design house Moooi pitched an idea for a collection conceived by them and created by Arte, co-owner and managing director Philippe Desart did not hesitate. “We have great respect for Moooi,” he says, “and it’s interesting to collaborate with another brand that allows us to showcase our capabilities as more than just a wallcovering brand, presenting Arte as a brand that cares about design and designers.”
as a “dream project” that has allowed them to reinterpret some of their signatures in weave. The deep cut ‘Cracked Velvet’, for example, was inspired by one of the Studio’s favourite materials, cracked gesso. “The joy of collaborating with others is that it gives me the chance to do something different,” says British interior designer Nina Campbell. “A joint project is an opportunity to extend our own brand, so my first question when considering a collaboration is, ‘what don’t I have?” The most recent answer to that question was a range of outdoor fabric and a collection of witty, colour popping furniture to complement her main line. Campbell turned to two US companies to realise her twin ambitions – Summit Furniture, whose London showroom is also at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, for the outdoor fabric and Oomph for the furniture. “I love Oomph’s colour palette and humour,” she says. “They make nice, thoughtful pieces of furniture that, as they say, add a little oomph to a room. We will be creating three roomsets in our Design Centre East showroom, mixing my designs for Oomph with my other furniture to demonstrate how the two styles work together. After all, no one wants matching suites of furniture anymore.” Campbell is right; there is a multi-layered, cosmopolitan spirit abroad in the design world, with designers and design houses drawing influence from across the globe. In-house collections are still hugely important of course, but as the guest designer projects prove, there is magic to be made when different creative forces come together.

in finding the weavers, the dyers, the spinners who are prepared to work to my standards. It’s their willingness to try new things that makes the product come alive and it’s what gives the colours more depth and allows the fabrics to drape and fall in the way they do.” At Tissus d’Hélène in Design Centre East, founder Helen Cormack, has filled shelves with artisanal fabrics that are mostly hand-blocked or hand-screen printed, as well as charming wallpapers. Designs by Galbraith & Paul – the last commercial hand-block printers in the US – have a freshness about them as well as a wonderful depth of colour which comes from the thick pigments the artisans use. But she also has beautiful panels of vegetable dyed fabric, hand-woven out of wild nettle silk by Namay Samay from the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. Meanwhile, Sacco Carpet is often called upon to make bespoke carpets for hotels such as the Rosewood hotel in London or The Breakers hotel in Palm Beach, and it, too, has cultivated a relationship with a group of artisanal yarn spinners, this time in South Africa. “It’s a sort of old-fashioned hippie commune,” says Marco Sacco, “but they do everything themselves – the yarn comes from sheep in Lesotho and they spin it, card it and dye it all by hand, making yarns that are infinitely superior to anything else on the market.” Sacco Carpet works with world-class hospitality designers such as Adam Tihany, David Rockwell and Jeffrey Beers to come up with colourways and patterns

They want the trim that exactly works with their chosen fabrics, the tap that is just right for the basin and bath, the light that precisely matches their practical and aesthetic demands. Often their search leads to Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. Not only is there a vast choice, but on every floor there are specialists who are as interested as they are in finding the perfect solution to every design question. It takes time, a little research and an engaged curiosity to discover the richness of all that is there, to learn the stories behind them and to understand just why it is that some have such high price tags. Take Bernie de Le Cuona who became famous in the 1990s for her exquisite linens. “I’ve been doing it for a long time,” she says, “and I’ve invested

that are unique to them which give their products a quality, a depth of colour and a texture that is extraordinary. Then, there is Rubelli that brings to its textiles a rich history imbued with a Venetian sensibility. They are the people the Bolshoi called when they wanted curtains based on an archival brocade with a thread of real gold running through it. It took a team of dedicated skilled workers something like six months to weave. They take pride in combining modern technology with old artisanal skills, often using high tech looms on yarns that have been hand spun. They have trained a group of local women to weave by hand the rich velvets which are their heritage. “It requires,” says Nicolò Favaretto Rubelli, “an enormous level of patience and, yes, love – without that it cannot be done.” At Turnell & Gigon, there are not only extraordinary wallpapers and fabrics (in particular, some hand-embroidered and hand appliquéd pieces by Palestrina London) but they are the name to turn to for wonderfully idiosyncratic trimmings from Les Passementeries de l’Isle de France. Like many of the old-established companies, they keep refreshing their brands by collaborating with different designers. Next up is a pop-up installation curated by the interior designer Katharine Pooley. Look out for serious glamour inspired by ‘The Great Gatsby’ (Turnell & Gigon’s fabrics were used by Baz Lurhmann in his film version of the book). Meanwhile, Iksel – Decorative Arts creates ornamental wallpapers that, as Tory Burch wrote in one of her blogs, “makes walls and ceilings look like they were hand-painted long ago.” It might be exotic scenes from 17th century Japan or 19th century Bologna – the result is always totally immersive wallpaper that transports the viewer to another world. Looking at the finished result, no-one would have a DCCH.CO.UK

clue about the work that goes into creating each one, sometimes taking up to 18 months to meticulously complete. Often the design needs to be retouched, and damaged and missing elements have to be filled in. Watts of Westminster, famous for their handblocked wallpapers, have just produced some dramatic tableaux sceniques inspired by the Verdures tapestries at Wolterton Hall in Norfolk – perfect for the grand hallway. Miles x Bookshop distributes Alexander Lamont’s furniture which is renowned for its exquisite use of the ancient craft of straw marquetry where each piece is inlaid carefully by hand. Much inspired by the work of the great Jean-Michel Frank, Lamont also uses a wide variety of rare materials and finishes – mother of pearl, patinated copper, lustrous indigo, lacquer, shagreen, smoked Spanish eucalyptus, cool maple – all of which give his pieces a distinctive, rich appeal. Nothing is standard, everything is fastidiously considered. Stuart Scott is another of the self-confessed “perfectionists” to be found at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. His furniture, which is now available at Fox Linton, is made in his workshops in Wiltshire, and each piece is signed and numbered. He is inspired by classic 20th century design, by Art Deco and uses an array of materials, techniques and crafts that date back hundreds of years. And then there is hardware which often provides the finishing touches that help give an interior its distinctive style. Scott Baxter, CEO and founder of SA Baxter Foundry & Design Studio, has developed collections created in collaboration with architects and interior designers such as Tony Ingrao and Fiona Barratt-Campbell

who are close to their customers and so know what they are really looking for. At Turnstyle Designs (where such is the care that goes into manufacturing that a single door handle has to pass through eight pairs of hands before it is considered ready to go) not only is there plenty of choice but if you do not find anything you fancy, its workshops can create any design you please. These though are just some of the wonderful discoveries to be found at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. Behind all the most special designs there is usually a tale of rare skills, great endeavour and a serious commitment to innovation and creativity. It is seriously worth taking a little time and trouble to uncover them. Worth doing, too, is checking out the workmanship, for much of it can only truly be appreciated by seeing it up close and personal. Details such as the beautiful materials and finishes need to be seen, touched and wondered at. It is a place, too, where dreams can be made to come true – the skills and vast experience of the companies on offer can be used to create a whole host of one-off, truly bespoke pieces. They are to the world of interior design what the haute couture members of the famed Chambre Syndicale in Paris is to the world of fashion. Creating magic is their raison d’être. It’s what they’re there to do.

Designs to Inspire FROM AN EXOTIC CITY BAR TO A HOTEL IN THE HIGHLANDS, THE INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS FEATURED IN THIS ISSUE, ARE SURE TO FIRE THE IMAGINATION: PICK UP SOME IDEAS ON HOW TO GET THE LOOK
THE CAFE Café L’oscar is the bustling heart of this hotel gem in Bloomsbury. Designed by Jacques Garcia, it has all the charm and sophistication of a Parisian café. Evoke the seductive look with ‘Riviera’ mirrors in antiqued glass from Porta Romana and ‘Quadra’, a wallcovering from Arte made of real metal foil with an oxidised effect. Take a ‘Kata’ seat by Decca at the illuminated onyx bar or get comfortable on a sofa upholstered in plush ‘Adamo & Eva’ cotton velvet by Dedar in limone and ametista. The artful ‘Ginkgo, 3 Leaves’ table lamp by Charles Paris at Rubelli/ Donghia and the ‘Diamond’ fabric by Nobilis add a theatrical flourish.
THE SITTING ROOM This project by Mike Fisher of Studio Indigo was formerly six artists’ studios. Now a family home, it includes a winter garden on the top floor. To create the look, make an impact with the ‘Golden Moon’ glass coffee table by Gallotti&Radice, inset with a stunning brass plate. The natural driftwood base of the ‘Nantucket’ table by Arteriors adds texture, whilst the ‘Teardrop’ table lamp in amber and gold leaf by Bella Figura introduces a sculptural element. On the generous ‘London’ sofa by Ventura, put some ‘Chorus’ printed velvet cushions by Elitis at Abbott & Boyd and ‘Shadow Check’ fabric to bring a modern, global touch.
THE BEDROOM
Designed by Russell Sage Studio, the exuberant Victoriana Suite at Fife Arms reflects the hotel’s history as a 19th century hunting lodge. To recreate the full multi-layered look, start with ‘Melias’ in Pimlico green by Watts of Westminster on the walls. Add rich ‘Bestegui’ damask by Rubelli Venezia at Rubelli/Donghia for the bed canopy and a colourful ‘Donegal Branches’ carpet by Tufenkian Artisan Carpets underfoot. The ‘Paris’ writing table by Thomas Pheasant at Baker, the ‘Agatha’ mirror by Porta Romana and a pretty ‘Lilford Glass’ urn table lamp lend a retro touch. The ‘Engadine’ fabric by Nobilis on the bed gives a nod to its Scottish location in the Cairngorms National Park.

THE BAR Attracting a well-travelled, curious and creative crowd, Soho House, Mumbai is housed in a refurbished 11-storey building overlooking Juhu beach. Get the relaxed vibe with a scheme that is full of character and rich with pattern and texture. Start with fabrics such as the ‘Benaki’ linen from Lewis & Wood and ‘Ogee’, a hand blocked print made in India by Pukka Print at Tissus d’Hélène. Add eclectic pieces of furniture including the ‘Alberto’ chair from Julian Chichester, the ‘Artesa’ table from Arteriors and the ‘Rondo’ cabinet in canaletta walnut by Porada. Bolder splashes of colour are offered by the laid-back ‘Markham’ sofa by David Seyfried Ltd.

Grown-up pastels bring a new dimension to brass and stone.
Design Legacy This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus art school. With its restrained aesthetic, this ‘Landmark Pure’ basin mixer in urban brass shows its ongoing influence. See it @samuelheathofficial.
Leading Lights New @foxlinton is CTO Lighting. Making a statement is this ‘Nimbus Cascade’ chandelier with its hint of retro glamour. Each glass droplet is handmade by artisans.
Jolly Good Yarn Chunky woven fabrics are bringing back the feel-good factor to modern interiors. ‘Kielder’ @wemyssfabrics is a chic bouclé that also contains FibreGuard technology.
Fringe Benefits New to @samuelandsons are ‘Sorrento’ tassel fringes and borders. Made from cotton and linen, they evoke the glistening beaches, colourful fishing villages and hillside towns of the Amalfi coast. Tread Softly Discerning denizens are discovering the barefoot luxury of super soft carpet. Colourful ‘Satara’ rugs @jacarandacarpets have a notable shine as they are hand woven from 100% TENCEL™.
All in the Mix Putting together sophisticated showroom vignettes is a signature @nicholashaslamltd. Here, orange and white ‘Riviere’ linen, inspired by reflections on water, is artfully combined with Grecian amphoras.
Stone Age The once humble terrazzo is having its design moment. Top tastemakers are falling for the on-trend speckled look made from marble chips. This field tile in rose @artisansofdevizes adds instant charm.
Just add Water Oomph has become a go-to for anyone who embraces colour. By adding this high lacquer vanity unit in parakeet, your bathroom has never looked so good. Available @ninacampbellltd.

Oranges & Lemons Once seen, the decorative language of Piero Fornasetti is never forgotten. A recurring leitmotif was Mediterranean fruit, shown here in the bold repeat of ‘Arance’. The wallcovering is part of a new collaboration @cole_and_son_wallpapers.
Palettes of Colour Art has long been a source of inspiration in fabric design. Manuel Canovas has looked to Matisse, revered for his expressive use of colour. See the floral motifs and sumptuous embroideries @colefaxandfowler.
Out of this World For a truly opulent look, head to British furniture makers @davidsonlondon. The four panels on the ‘Galaxy’ drinks cabinet are hard carved and hand gilded in bronze.
