n India ever since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, tea has become the subject of discussion. Over the years consumption of tea in India has shot up but somehow brands still choose to believe that a lot can happen over coffee. In China however it’s shaping up differently. Traditionally, China has been a tea drinking nation but this has not stopped brands to elevate the status of its favourite beverage to the next level especially when Starbucks is opening up all over.
Editor’s Note
‘HEY TEA’ a Chinese tea shop chain has been strongly promoting tea through its chain of exclusive stores. Much akin to its product offerings, each HEYTEA store evokes uniqueness and exclusivity in terms of its interior design. In this issue we focus on the interiors of HEYTEA Store located in Hongqiao Xintiandi, Shanghai. Designed by DAS Lab, the interior of this store merges the Chinese cultural sensibilities with a global design aesthetic.
Unlike India, coffee is coded in the cultural DNA of the European nations, as also, the USA. In Vienna, the Viennese coffee house played an important role in shaping the Viennese culture. Still in existence these spaces allow their patrons to socialize, read international newspapers and play cards all while sipping different kinds of coffee. 594 kms away from Vienna, when the owner of a pastry shop handed over the business to his son, his idea was to recreate a similar kind of ambiance. And this ultimately led to the creation of Patisserie Hofer, a pastry shop located in the city of Bolzano, the capital city of the province of South Tyrol in northern Italy.

Vienna is the federal capital, largest city and one of nine states of Austria. The Viennese coffee house played an important role in shaping the Viennese culture. In a typical Viennese coffee house patrons can enjoy different kinds of coffee while reading national and international newspapers, socialise with friends and play cards as well. 594 kms away from Vienna, the idea was to recreate a similar kind of ambiance in Patisserie Hofer, a pastry shop located in the city of Bolzano.
7
Patisserie Hofer By noa* network of architecture
The capital city of the province of South Tyrol in Northern Italy Bolzano is considered as the confluence of Italian and German-Austrian culture. Natives out here are fluent in Italian, German and Ladin. When the owner handed over the business to his son he envisioned a new pastry shop in the style of the famous Vienna coffee house. The brief was to transform the pastry shop into a meeting point for the young and the old. A space where one can sit, relax and read a newspaper apart from indulging in pastries. The project was commissioned to noa* (network of architecture.)
Using fabric, wood and plaster as the key materials the essence of Vienna coffeehouse was brought to life
Andreas Profanter, Partner, noa* points out “Our aim was to replicate the warm and welcoming feeling of the traditional coffeehouse in Vienna while still maintaining a contemporary style.
The total area of the pastry shop - 85 m2 including restrooms is segregated into three main zones: a more protected, traditional sitting area in the back (ca. 25 m2), a central bar and retail area (33m2) and a lounge area in the front (ca. 15m2).

The project was meant to be executed in a months’ time and hence the design and planning phase was of the utmost importance in this assignment. Using fabric, wood and plaster as the key materials the essence of Vienna coffeehouse was brought to life. All the interior accessories were also designed by noa*. The lounge area was decked up with vintage furniture which was in possession of the client.

Lines And Motion By Myvn Architecture
Project Lines & Motion is a take on designing an office work space with an approach of total contrast to the conventional work spaces. Envisioning an interactive and futuristic work space, the client approached the designers for designing a 1260 sq.ft. office space with a stringent budget. The office is spread across 1260 sq.ft area

Keeping the light installation and the table as a predominant central design element in the space, verticals facing the cityscape were introduced towards the glazing. These verticals act as spill out zones with standing desks and loose seating
The simplified clean floor plan intrigued the designers with a single sleek long table for the whole work space. The massive scale of the table was to be reflected on the ceiling as a single volume. The single volume on the ceiling took a form of a light installation. In tune with the client’s ideology of bringing a futuristic programmable light form which reflected their work of complex and precise coding, the idea of creating a play with lines came into the notion.
Creating a volume which wouldn’t overpower yet have a stark dominant character initiated the explorations on acrylic. The shortcomings of the material defined its vertical placement as panels.

The single longitudinal volume was fragmented by creating verticals panels. With the concept of layering, etching was done on the panels which created a complex web work and mesh of lines. The flexibility of the acrylic brings in a fluid movement in the installation. The curvilinear grooves hold the panel with the light source running on top. The motion in lines brings out the dynamic character of the ceiling wherein one can experience a new form from different angles. The woven web of lines is an outcome of a design process which balances the impression of graphics in an interior space by using the varied depictions of a simple line.

Instead of being an object of beautification, the installation lives in the space reacting to the user through the medium of his vision.

These verticals act as spill out zones with standing desks and loose seating. The pantry and play area have been enveloped in a subtle yet contrasting shade of green.
The meeting room wrapped in black is a cosy space with dim warm lights, for one to explore and work in solace. At the end of the table, towards the glazing a grid has been introduced which brings a fresh vibe by connecting with lush green which peeps out from its voids.

The studio designed a bungalow in New Delhi. Spread across 8500 sq.ft the components at site were sourced locally. Very few factory bought components have been used in this building. The house appears to be transparent but provides volumes of privacy. The entrance itself is like a ‘jharokha’, which offers privacy at the doorstep and encourages the occupants to leave it open for cross ventilation.
The light seeps into living spaces and other areas in the house according to the movement of sun during daytime. Lots of skylights at calculated angles bring in natural light, to colour the space orange in the mornings & evenings. The house uses a heat reflective glass, the stone utilised was primarily developed first hand; then tried in the market and was applied on site. The washed stone aggregate on the exterior walls is a thermocouple fixed to a cavity wall; this was cast in-situ & is a very effective insulator.

This house typically stands as a tribute to the 70s Indian modernism and is a masterpiece because of its exemplary style and beauty. A public garden in the front of the house and one private garden at the back limits the visual access. We live in an age where the concept of branding has made considerable impact on the success or the failure of a brand in question. The power of branding in not limited to those products which get featured in TVC’s alone. The impact is far wider. When group DCA was commissioned to design the interiors of Enrich Office and Academy based in Mumbai, they were not just designing the interiors, they were using a creative syntax to signify the ethos of the brand.

Unlike the larger firms the compact versions are driven by few professionals who share the core workload. Today we look at the office interiors of one such IT firm based in Pune.
Inspirit Vision is located in a commercial building on Pashan Road, Pune. The first thing that catches ones attention is the play of colours out here Ar.Kalpak Bhandari, Principal Architect, Veekas Studios who worked on this project says “Most of the workforce in this company is young. The total area of this office is 4000 sq.ft. The reception area is compact and gives access to a meeting room and the cafĂŠteria. Apart from this there are two cabins, a conference room, server room and the restroom block. The remaining 2250 sq.ft is the open office area.
The furniture layout is non-rigid and lends a little informal character to the office. The office had a large floor plate and windows on the far ends only. Hence natural lighting was limited. Given the limited availability of natural light the designers decided that the entire furniture would be white in colour. Complementing these swathes of white are the blue carpet, orange columns along with one large wall in a bluish grey tone. The entire the lighting is designed using linear LED fixtures, suspended to a height of 2.0 mts from the floor level. This helps in proper illumination levels on the tables with low consumption as compared to lighting where the fixtures are placed in the ceiling to illuminate the entire spatial volume.
The presence of a number of RCC beams on the ceiling with varying depths had to be concealed. Besides there was need for sound proofing too. This was achieved by creating a false ceiling which utilises noise reduction tiles. This project took approximately two months to complete Veekas Studio has designed, sourced and executed everything as seen in the photographs. The graphics on the glass partitions too were customized to suit the client’s functional requirements.
Some of the brands utilised in the project include a blue coloured Carpet by Shaw Wallace for the flooring, Furniture by Onlead, Grid ceiling by Armstrong with a high NR value for noise reduction.

“Functionality and aesthetics go hand in hand. The first step is to understand the brief of the client, what he or she needs. This helps us to get an idea about what the client wants exactly and the specific functionality they require. Once we understand the client’s perspective, we can then blend it with aesthetics. This is what good design is all about,” believes Saniya Kantawala, the interior designer who designed Mumbai based Sionnah’s Fashion Boutique.

Based in SV Road Bandra Sionnah’s Fashion Boutique is spread across an area of 1200 sq. ft. and is done up in a minimalistic style with pristine white interiors. The design intent of the space was to create muted interiors so that the designer’s colourful collection could be highlighted, and the necessary vibrancy and flamboyance could be added to the space.
Project Sionnah By Saniya Kantawala
The retail store makes good use of lights in the interiors to create the right mood speaking about the lighting scheme Saniya adds “We didn’t want any mannequins within the space as that one dress hanging from the ceiling with sufficient lighting did all the work in pulling customers in. The colour scheme of the space – white and beige, with gold accents reimpose the clean and minimalistic design scheme.

“Architecturally the space was ideal for an interior designer,” says Saniya “as it was built with a minimal number of columns and beams which reduce interference. However, instead of utilising the absence of columns as an advantage, a concept was envisaged with a rather unique visualisation of the space that converted the columns into inverted arches. A grand and palatial entryway was built with four columns that were then transformed into arches.”
Project Sionnah By Saniya Kantawala
The archways, multi-purpose in their design also serve as a seating for customers. They are detachable and can be easily placed anywhere in the space depending upon the seating requirements. Through the arched entry-way, one’s eyes are immediately pulled towards the crystal bevelled ballerina, suspended from the ceiling, ahead of a glass façade; a unique take on the window display.

Generally, architects and designers love to use and create spaces where beams and columns are as less as possible. But in Sionnah the design approach was different. Shades of purple and lavender on the sofas reflect a conscious choice for depicting the royalty and grandeur of the space.
