he effect of internet on our lives has been far reaching. It has changed the way business is conducted. The inception of e-commerce has opened up new markets for different brands which compete with each other.

In this scenario, the existing brick and mortar stores have altered their business approach and design sensibilities to engage the online consumer in the real world.

We present to you one project which affirms this line of thought “Mußler Beauty by Notino”. The store has been designed by Dittel Architekten in “Das Gerber”, a shopping centre based in Stuttgart, Germany.

Editor’s Note

Back home, Asha Villa designed by Veekas Studios epitomizes selfsufficiency in terms of modern day amenities. Public areas, private zones, office, gymnasium, home theatre and indoor entertainment zone clubbed with a party area and an indoor swimming pool, you name it and it’s there in this property. Spread across a built up area of 1800 sq.mt the villa is based in Balewadi an upcoming hub in West Pune.

We also focus on two projects based in Mumbai to capture the divergent approach towards building a happy home. Zero9 designs a home for a nuclear family scripted in the contemporary syntax whereas Ar. Arjun Rathi’s version reverberates with the ethos of the traditional homes designed in the Kutch region of Gujarat.

We are also happy to let you know that we have a Facebook page and a blog to keep you engaged. And we hope you shower it with your unconditional love too. At this point I would also thank our readers who have given us thumbs up post the release of our first issue. Your responses have kept us motivated. Thanks a lot and Happy Reading. An assorted set of interior accessories revs up the design quotient.

Asha Villa by Veekas Studio

A regular residence entails a living room, bathroom, kitchen, bath spaces and bedrooms. In such cases segregation is not a challenge since it follows the regular caricature of well-designed residences. But when you have a good deal of space in your hand and the plan is to move beyond the formulaic approach of dividing a space, the challenge is quite paramount. A good deal of creativity is required to ensure that the results are aesthetically pleasing.

The kids wanted a space theme in the play area and it was designed accordingly.

Asha Villa by Veekas Studio

White Satvaria marble adorns the floor space in the rooms accessible to guests and visitors.

The Asha Villa project located in Balewadi an upcoming hub in West Pune poised a similar challenge for Veekas Studios. Principal Architect, Kalpak Bhandari notes “The plot area of the villa is 3000 sq.mt and is part of the larger land holding of the client, the built up area of the villa is 1800 sq.mt.

The idea was to design a large spacious residence for the family with lot of openness and visual connectivity within. Since the site is flanked by dense high rise developments on two sides we devised a plan to create an abode with large openings on the other sides looking within the plot. This design also ensured that the issue of privacy is not compromised. More so because the villa in a way also serves as an office space.

Asha Villa by Veekas Studio

Each room has been infused with a varied degree of ostentation.

“This project,” adds Kalpak, “was more than a regular villa, the sheer amount of space entailed creation of public areas, private zones, office, gymnasium, home theatre and indoor entertainment zone which was clubbed with the party area. In addition there was an indoor swimming pool, the swimming pool was designed since all the members in the client’s family love to swim.”

The entrance lobby features a copper wall art designed by local artisans.

10 Design Connect|August 2018

The wall mural near the pool has been designed and customised by ceramic artist - Ruby Jhunjhunwala.

A closer look at the villa adds clarity to the fact that the dedicated areas were created in a way such that there is a clear distinction between the private and the public spaces. All the different spaces of the villa overlook the triple height volume of the swimming pool. This central volume helps in the visual connectivity of all the spaces within the residence.

The entertainment room extends all the way to a large terrace and can accommodate the family and close friends with ease.

The client has a number of work related visitors coming to the residence too and hence an office space was designed for this activity. The office is located at the semi basement level with access from the entrance lobby of the villa to maintain the privacy of the residence.

The dedicated areas in this abode ensured the architects had a lot to do with in terms of the colour strategy adopted “We felt that the color tones should be rich, muted, pastel and sober,” says Kalpak “The play of color was added through soft furnishing, wallpapers, some furniture elements and artworks throughout the villa. This also lends some flexibility to change the artwork and furnishings at regular intervals without much thought.”

Asha Villa by Veekas Studio

An indoor gym with a recreational area.

Mr Bhandari points out “The swimming pool was an important aspect of the design scheme. Considering the high rise development surrounding the plot we felt that an indoor pool would work well considering the privacy issues the site presented. The pool occupies the central zone of the villa also acting as a primary segregator of the public and private spaces. Besides owing to its triple height a sectional segregation is also achieved. And it helps in extracting the hot air within the residence from the highest level of the villa. The large openings at lower levels brings in cooler air and this encourages a natural flow cycle of air within the abode. The swimming pool water is heated through solar panels placed on the terrace and hence is an all-weather pool.”

The Dining Area

The office is located at the semi basement level with access from the entrance lobby.

The variation in colour strikes a chord with the assorted set of interior accessories utilized in this project . Some were collected over a couple of years and some were customised specifically for this project. The wall mural of lotuses and leaves near the pool has been designed and customised by a Pune based ceramic artist - Ruby Jhunjhunwala.

Likewise the copper wall art in the entrance lobby too is designed by local artisans. A few cabinets which act as highlight pieces in the living room were designed on site.

The overall lighting scheme served as a precise balance of the client’s ambitions and budgets besides adding the required dose of aesthetics in the overall caricature of the abode.

The balustrade is designed using teak wood and bent toughened glass.

Amongst the branded accessories utilized in this project are lighting fixtures from companies like Xal, Hoffmeister and Flos. The products were chosen on the basis of their light output, quality, quantity, durability and electrical consumption. Along with these some decorative fixtures are also used in different spaces to accentuate certain areas and highlight the character of that particular space.

} The pool is planned in the central zone of the villa, it segregates the public and private zones that exists within the villa. Design Connect|August 2018

Mußler Beauty by Notino - DIA

A Unique Synthesis Project Designed By : DIA Photo Courtesy: Martin Baitinger

With the unique store design for Mußler Beauty by Notino in Stuttgart City, Germany, DITTEL ARCHITEKTEN GMBH (DIA) seem to close the gap between the virtual and the real world.

We live in a time line when the imprint of the digital ecosystem is high and e-commerce is a preferred mode of business. In the midst of this digital makeover, there is one aspect which continues to challenge business houses and that is branding. Moreover as online business grows, so does the need for service, advice and product experience. Mußler Beauty by Notino designed by DIA serves as a good example of a novel approach in design to address such business concerns.

14 Design Connect|August 2018

Soft colours dominate the interiors and infuse a certain degree of consistency in the design scheme.

Frank Dittel, Founder and Managing Director, DIA

Mußler Beauty by Notino is a fusion of Mußler Beauty, traditional perfumery and Notino, Europe’s leading online retailer for beauty care.

Mußler Beauty by Notino - DIA

“Mußler Beauty by Notino” is a fusion of Mußler Beauty, traditional perfumery and Notino, Europe’s leading online retailer for beauty care. Mußler Beauty is an expert at the stationary trade, Notino at the online trade. They built a joint brand to leverage the best out of both worlds. The new brand “Mußler Beauty by Notino” therefore is pioneer of the future of retail. This first of 10 planned stores in Germany and more 50 planned in Europe is placed in the shopping centre “Das Gerber” in the centre of Stuttgart city in Germany.

The brand has created a real world experience which finds a deep resonance with its online setup. The holistic brand experience is the focus of the design concept. Everything revolves around what the consumer is looking for in a stationary retail: individualization, emotionality, social exchange and exclusivity. Even from the outside, a digital shop window beckons as well as the view into the store with its live promotions.

The flooring syncs effortlessly with the product display and elevates the design quotient. Design Connect|August 2018

15

When DIA was approached to design this marvel the brief was to develop a design language that gives the newly merged brand an authentic face, to bring to life the onlineoffline brand symbiosis by emotionalizing it, to meet the expectations of the individual and freedom-loving costumer and to be adaptable to various locations and cities.

Mußler Beauty by Notino - DIA

The layout offers a lot of breathing space.

Likewise Team DIA devised a design concept which focused on creating brand experiences by merging unique brands + themes in individual units while giving them an integral design roof. And a lot of open space to ensure enough room for walking in between product displays. The interior structure creates a language of harmony with a lounge in the centre and retreat like zones. For e.g. the hair styling zone which consists of separate units divided by room dividers. In the words of Frank Dittel, Founder and Managing Director, DIA “The store offers different products, brands, community and consulting spaces such as a hair styling or brow bar, the spatial division was done keeping in mind the individual scenarios the store had to create.

The design concept is based on oriental markets known as “suq”.

16 Design Connect|August 2018

The concept is based on oriental markets known as “suq”. The suq is a commercial sub centre in the city. While the centre functions as the meeting point and heart of the market, the surrounding is subdivided into various market stands with individual product themes and colour palettes. In “Mußler Beauty by Notino” the customer finds a lounge with drinks and a pop up space in the centre.

Mußler Beauty by Notino - DIA

The brands and live actions are placed in different “niches” which transport individual stories by the use of material and colour.

The brands and live actions are placed in different “niches” which transport individual stories by the use of material and colour. To give some examples you find the “hair styling bar” in the a retro 60’s look and the “men’s world” symbolizing masculinity, handicraft and nature”

The color concept syncs with the lighting to offer a lot of shine at the entrance.

The store concept is as versatile as the various brands and products. Given the diverse products it accommodates at the same time it has a “design roof that unifies all units and creates a unique design appearance. The modern and rough design language can be found in the clean tiles floor, the exposed ceiling as well as the black metal shelves. The high-quality tiled floor designed using Villeroy & Boch stone tiles highlights the entire surface and becomes a meticulous design element with different colored joints for the individual units.

20 Design Connect|August 2018

Likewise the lighting scheme satiates two objectives, it creates a comfortable basic lighting to highlight the product shelves. Besides the ceiling lit up with white backlights functions as a styling element and guides customers through the store. The colour coding, setup and design of the individual units and dedicated areas was done keeping in mind their unique narratives in overall design scheme.

Mußler Beauty by Notino - DIA

DIA’s design scheme merges the virtual and the real world to define a futuristic trend for retail spaces.

The lounge with coffee machine and makeup mirrors and “director’s chairs” give the feeling of being a movie star, likewise in the women’s fragrances section, sparkling golden back wall and ash wood pillars to test products symbolize glamour and elegance. Similarly in the men’s world, dark wood back wall, clean, rough and industrial furniture indicate masculinity. The green leather back wall and yellow joints utilized for niche products denote playfulness.

In an arena where the virtual landscape competes with the brick and mortar versions, DIA has created an expression which merges the two and defines a futuristic trend for retail spaces. In doing so DIA has created a syntax which carefully takes a note of the consumer behavior and likewise showcases the path for transformation in the architecture and design to achieve the desired synthesis.

A PLEASANT WORKSPACE

The Nomura office in Gurgaon designed by Ultraconfidentiel Design is designed to keep the employee motivated and the client captivated

Based in New Delhi, architectural firm Ultraconfidentiel Design was commissioned to design an office space for Nomura, a Japanese consulting company. The client wanted the office to look distinctive while advocating an open office format. Elucidating on the design brief Project Manager, Scott Devlin says “The client requested a sleek, simple design that nevertheless had a premium feel. They also asked us to avoid traditional Japanese design motifs which is generally associated with the Japanese culture

Spread across 6,000 sq.ft the office space can be broadly divided into two main areas: The work area and the leisure areas. Together they comprise numerous meeting rooms, a lounge, a cafeteria, a library, and dedicated workstations. In ways more than one the design scheme may also bring to mind co-working spaces which have proliferated in recent times.

The drama of design begins at the reception desk itself. The desk designed using Corian is functional yet stylish. The illumination here is achieved using LED’s embedded in thin wooden panels above. To the right of the reception is a meeting room which facilitates quick meetings with the guests who drop in. Ideally the visitors wait in the waiting area adorned with sofa sets post which they are lead to the meeting room beside or the guest lounge behind the reception area.

The use of frozen moss along the rear cafeteria wall aids the thematic variation while maintaiining a visual connectivity.

The colour code in this project is limited to shades of green and white. Shades of green used between the rooms impart an individual feel to the spaces while creating a cohesive look. “The use of frozen moss along the rear cafeteria wall,” says Scott “allowed us to continue the thematic variation on shades of green while simultaneously introducing a change in texture. The airy breathability of the material is calming and invites viewers to consider its natural provenance.”

The use of glass offers the requisite amount of privacy while preserving an open and modern feel.

24 Design Connect|August 2018

The use of wood for creating false ceilings also raises the design quotient, the reception area is one good example. Likewise in other areas wooden slats have been erected from the ceiling to utilise the space effectively. All the furniture and office accessories in this project were custom designed by the Ultraconfidentiel team. These fresh, modern, and functional pieces sync effortlessly with the design lingo of their respective surroundings and add to the visual charm of the space,

The choice of green and white also augurs well in a design scheme dominated by wooden flooring and furniture. It offers the necessary colour contrast and compliments the warmth offered by wooden furniture.

The lighting scheme too has an important role to play in elevating the design aesthetics of this space. Team Ultraconfidentiel used different kinds of lights to achieve the desired effect “To create an inviting, yet functional, office space we used a combination of lighting styles and each have an inherent effect,” says Scott “Ambient lights and down lighters allow employees to clearly focus on their projects, as does task lighting. The addition of accent lights shape and define the atmosphere whereas the decorative lights infuse drama and character to the space.” In an open office format the use of glass is a prominent feature. And in this project too it offers the requisite amount of privacy while preserving an open and modern feel “Use of glass partitions in the office,” says Scott “created an interplay between defined spaces, offering self-contained areas while preserving sightlines. The frameless glass walls speak of an expansive, open design concept.”

A well designed library offers a much desired time out from the day to day tasks.

An as the conversation with Scott comes to an end you can’t help but think how the perception towards well-designed office spaces has undergone a paradigm shift in India. The interiors evoke a warm and welcoming aura.

An abode allures the mind with a sense of belonging. This feeling is primarily owing to the home owner’s likeness for his abode. But the credit also belongs to the designer who has successfully scripted this tale. And in this case it’s Zero9 Architects.

The design and the choice of interior accessories accentuate a minimalist approach.

The windows separate the living room from balcony, which offers a wonderful view of the world outside. Given the sober colour palate of the living room, the overall effect it generates is very pleasing.

The interior accessories like the shelves, tea table, sofa sets and the potted plants accentuate a minimalist approach also adding required dose of colour contrast in the design scheme.

Mumbai is home to an increasing number of skyrises and this project too is located in a high rise, commenting on this trend Ar. Prashant Chauhan, Owner and Creative Director, Zero9 notes “The face of Mumbai is changing, and the skyline of the city in particular is on an expansion mode. It’s now a symbol of affluence, an affluence which symbolizes the city’s ambitions.“

Wanderlust - lost in the city of Mumbai

“The drama of design accordingly unfolds in a defined sq.ft area. And the design diktat gets drafted keeping in mind the availability of space. Is this a compromise of sorts? Perhaps not, more so, because it is primarily meant for nuclear families. Unlike a large independent property segregation of spaces in an apartment is a foregone conclusion. But the challenge lies in defining it. And in this 900 sq.ft project Zero9 architects have managed to do this with ease.

For example, the dinning space in this project is a part of the living room itself, but it seems otherwise. The wooden panels in the backdrop create the necessary distraction and also conceal the doors which lead to the bedrooms. The wired frame depicting Lord Ganesh will definitely grab your attention in this space.

The Kitchen Space

The master bedroom is draped in earthy brown. The colour coding of the bed rest, extended side table and the flooring has been done accordingly. With the use of an assorted set of accessories and a suspended lamp, the designers have added an element of style in an otherwise simple layout. In the midst of this a black and white photograph on the wall yearns for attention.

A family in a photograph portrays different individuals bonded by a relationship of trust and affinity. Zero9 architects have drafted the interiors of this abode in a similar way. Different spaces in this 2BHK are bound together by the language of design. Maybe this is a precursor to the “lived happily ever after” we have grown up listening to. The design approach takes into account the distinct attributes of the occupants personality.

The teal blue and white tinted pine wood in the daughter’s bedroom adds an aura of freshness. The bed back with a customized wallpaper reflects the liveliness one associates with youth. Reptilian Desires by KOKET

KOKET’S REPTILIAN DESIRES The inspiration for design comes from infinite sources. Designers have been constantly inspired by symbolic entities. This in turn has led to the infusion of the reptilian kind in the design mainstream. The Serpentine Collection by Koket is one of the fine examples of such inspiration. We spoke to Janet Morais, Creative Director and Founder of Koket about the collection.

What material has been used to design the products under this collection? We are a brand that values handmade work done by master artisans and while using old techniques. The collection is made of hand carved solid wood and is finished with gold leaf.

Given the cryptic and symbolic nature of your collection, who is your target audience for the serpentine collection?

What led to the inception of the serpentine collection? How many designers were involved in this project?

KOKET constantly tries to create a brand experience which connoisseurs of good design would love to relish. The serpentine collection collection too is meant for clients who have an eye for craftsmanship, luxury and exclusivity.

I was personally involved in the creation of the Serpentine Collection along with designer Pedro Santos. The desire and boldness to create something new inspired by the fauna and flora around us, led us to design this beautiful collection.

The serpentine collection was featured in 2018 edition of the Salone Del Mobile, how was the market response to the serpentine collection at Salone? In time to come do you see more products being added to this collection?

Unlike the eastern cultures where snakes are revered in the west it is usually considered as a symbol of sinfulness, deceit, and just general evil, given this fact, what motivated you to design this collection? All the Koket pieces transmit very powerful meanings and the snake is always a symbol of strength, defending their ground rather than retreat and this is the kind of message that we want to transmit. All the features of the snake, the good ones and the bad ones are all needed in the spirit of the empowered woman. We wanted to represent the character of the business woman in the simplest way maintaining the KOKET flavor.

How many products are included in the Serpentine Collection? Can you please share the names? The mirror - Serpentine Mirror The Sconce - Serpentine Sconce

This collection provokes two completely different reactions from the audience. People either love it or hate it, there really hasn’t been a middle reaction . Very soon we will be adding a new product to this collection. Just wait to be amazed! In your own words what is the USP of the serpentine collection?

The Kubadia Residence was designed for a family of four consisting of two daughters. Given its location and large windows, the flow of ambient light is very profound. And the resulting effect it creates in the backdrop of the interiors is quite a stunner. The project was executed by Arjun Rathi Design. Established in 2012, Arjun Rathi Design is a multidisciplinary studio working across the verticals of architecture, interiors and product design. The studio is known for it esoteric and exoteric approach towards design.

The magic of the marble flooring and the corresponding colour scheme make it appear very spacious.

The combined effect of the assorted accessories in the backdrop of the marble flooring is simply splendid.

Though the project is spread across 910 sq.ft the magic of the marble flooring and the corresponding colour scheme make it appear very spacious. The use of veneer and custom designed acessories add an element of charm in this minimalistic narrative. Keep in tandem with the idea of spaciousness the design team opened up one of the rooms to expand the master bathroom and the dining area. The synchronisation between the kitchen space and dining area is perfect. Additionally a slider has been put in place to ensure the housewife has access to privacy when desired.

The project makes good use of artifical lighting. It was achieved using LED downlighters and lamps hand picked by the design team. The furniture was custom designed keeping in mind the sober colour pallate. Unlike a contemporary home this house achieves flamboyance through the use of materials instead of colours.

The wall in the daughters room features brass and light inlays with a grid and proportions inspired form the golden ratio.

Marble, terracota and veneer craft a captivating tale within a defined sq.ft area. And all of this resonates with the client’s lineage. Arjun Rathi, Principal Designer, Arjun Rathi Design says “The family is from a very traditional Gujarati background, orginally hailing from Kutch and looking to move into a new home. The finishes were inspired from their roots in Gujarat where lime plasters, wood and marble have been traditionally used for their family homes.”

The influence of the traditional narrative is very prominent in the master bedroom. The lime plaster finish and the use of terracotta colour visible in this room take inspiration from the houses unique to the Kutch reigion in Gujarat. The wardrobe has a traditional weave on the wall paper along with the earthy sombre curtains.

The powder room features wooden mosaic tile.

Their bathroom sports tiles with ink inspired prints.

The powder room features wooden mosaic tile which imparts a cozy and warm effect to the space. On the other hand the girls’ bedroom is designed keeping a relationship with the outdoor trees in mind. The curtains and finishes are left sober to highlight the terrazzo bedroom wall. Their bathroom sports tiles with ink inspired prints as both the girls are very fond of charcoal and ink pen sketching.

The entire project was designed by Arjun Rathi Design in a span of 6 months. And in executing it, the firm has put on display it ability to create a traditional narrative in a contemporary framework. Connect Online@ arjun@arjunrathi.com

In this traditional framework the designers have also incorporated the essence of sacred geometry. The walls of the living room features a brass inlay inspired from a golden ratio grid. Likewise in the daughters room the wall has brass and light inlays with a grid and proportions inspired form the golden ratio. Amidst the foreplay of tradition and sacred geometry the TV unit form in the living room takes inspiration from the Barcelona Pavilion designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of the pioneers of American modernism.

In the movie 3 Idiots the character ‘Farhan’ played by Madhavan gets admitted to Mechanical Engineering only to evolve as a wildlife photographer. In a society where the profession is revered I come across Farhan from time to time. Today we talk about one such Farhan, who did his Mechanical Engineering to become a full-fledged product designer. Having said that, not everyone can be Farhan, it’s not easy!

Saumil Suchak the brain behind Hatsu is a young guy, unlike other designers Sumit has no formal education in design. Post his junior college he took up Mechanical Engineering in MIT, Pune. However he saw ‘light’ in light designing. And the inception of Hatsu happened.

As I ruffle through the product brochure of Hatsu, every product has clean straight lines, the look and feel of each, as I view them closely, has an international feel to it. “Our intention,” retorts the designer, breaking the air of tranquility “is to develop clean, minimal and subtle designs which is affordable and user friendly. Our product range takes inspiration from the quote “Less is more” so we try to keep it simple yet worth buying”

But surprisingly most of the design inspiration for this light designer comes a fashion designer “I look up to Issey Miyake, a Japanese fashion designer for creative inspiration,” says Sumit, “what I like about Issey is his unwavering approach to create, to have freedom of ideas. Ideas unconstrained by any preexisting rules or framework and turning them into reality through a tenacious process of research and experimentation.”

In an age where the digital landscape beacons young entrepreneurs, the road ahead has been similar for Hatsu. Post production Sumit decided it was best in his and the company’s interest to have a digital footprint to sell the products online with a select presence in the real world.

“We have a strong retail presence online,” says Sumit,”people can visit our portal, look at our products and buy them. Likewise we also have tie ups with retailers who exhibit our products. Also we are in the midst of setting up something interesting which will allow people to touch and feel our products closely.”

The Hatsu product range has an enticing range of products and to create such contemporary products which espouse urban values requires a dedicated effort on the part of the manufacturer “We have our own set of karigar’s who are skilled to perfection.

But we are always open to collaborations, as it gives us an opportunity to look beyond the design paradigms we have defined in our journey so far. Likewise we are also into customized offerings, depending on the type and scale of design, we can designed a customized product in 3-8 weeks’ time” As the conversation comes to a close, the young designer is quick to add “Good design should empower its users, the entire process from its inception to its creation needs to be transparent so that the reach is not limited.” Contact Hatsu Lighting D, 215, Saki Vihar Rd, Sag Baug, Marol, Andheri East, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400072 Mobile No: 098200 67671 Web: www.hatsu.in
