Welcome to the new prospectus for Cannock Chase Technical College detailing our full-time courses for September 2009. Should you choose to join our college at this exciting time, you will be among the very first students who graduate from the brand new South Staffordshire College. Whilst campuses will be maintained at Cannock into the future, the college is joining forces with Tamworth and Lichfield College and Rodbaston College to create more opportunities for the people and businesses of Cannock. As South Staffordshire College, we will be able to offer you a massive choice of courses to progress your education. This will be backed up by increased support services, more social activities and events and a network of great facilities across the whole of South Staffordshire.

South Staffordshire College will boast over 20,000 students and more than 1000 staff. What to do when you leave school is a pretty big decision and it will have an impact on the rest of your life. We aim to help you make the right decision by offering impartial advice and guidance from our Learner Support Services team.

As an adult returning to education you may feel a bit uneasy about taking those first steps. Our team of Learner Support Advisers is here to help address any concerns you may have about coming to college with an impartial advice and guidance interview.

If you do decide that college is for you, you will find it very different to the school environment. At college you will be treated as an adult in a friendly and supportive environment. You will have more freedom and independence than previously, you will also make many new friends.

A large number of our full time students are mature so you will fit in straight away. The friendly support of Learner Support Advisers and tutors will also soon make you feel at home. Our aim is give you the support you need to gain the job-related skills and self-confidence required for a successful career.

Study Centres Learner Support Services At our main site, The Green, you will find Learner Support Services near reception. Learner Support Services can provide you with information, advice and guidance on anything that may be affecting your experience at the college. Within the Learner Support Team we have a Student Support Officer who can give you information on the financial help available from the college. Our Student Liaison Officer offers a fully confidential service to allow you to gain support with family or health issues and to discuss any problems at all.

All of our Learner Support Advisers are trained in giving information, advice and guidance to Matrix standards. We also work very closely with Connexions who will give you free and impartial advice on careers, or personal issues or information on Higher Education.

There is a Study Centre at both The Green and The Progress Centre sites providing access to a wide range of learning materials designed to assist you in your studies. These drop-in centres offer you the use of books, magazines, newspapers and computers giving access to the internet, electronic resources and an assortment of the latest software packages. The centres also offer a range of services including study areas, photocopying facilities and colour printing, stationery and textbook sales. Each of the Study Centres contains an extensive careers library with information in arrange of formats about jobs, career choices, how to write a CV, interview skills and how to get into Higher Education. The Study Centres are there to help students to get quick and easy access to a vast range of information. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a computer or internet access at home, you can drop-in to the centres and make use of the extensive resources they provide. Each Study Centre has a team of dedicated and enthusiastic staff available to support and advice you with your studies.

Staff provide a range of support and facilities to enable you to complete your studies successfully. We can offer you individual learning programmes and help on a one-to-one basis. If you require extra support with reading, writing, maths, mobility or even motivational help, we will do our very best to help you. Xtras The college enrichment programme, Xtras, is designed to complement the academic side of college life. Enrichment activities are optional and take place on a Wednesday afternoon. Xtras will provide you with the opportunity to develop new interests, become more skilled in an area and to have fun whilst making new friends. Activities are many and varied. They include: snowboarding, paintballing, horse trekking and much more.

Student Council Student Association If you are interested in the social aspects of college life – you can join the Student Association and become directly involved in arranging social activities as well as being a voice for the students in any issues arising.

The Student Council is made up of elected representatives, Learner Reps, from each course at each level. The main responsibility of the council is to represent all students’ views in regular meetings with both the Student Association and the staff. As a member of the Student Council you will:

Tutorial Support As a full time student you will be allocated a Course Tutor who will be responsible for making sure you achieve your full potential and progress to education or employment. Your tutor’s role is to ensure you benefit from your programme of study and achieve your goals. Course Tutors can also arrange access to a wide range of other specialist advice should you require it.

New 14-19 Diplomas Connexions Connexions is for you if you are 13 - 19, living in England and wanting advice on getting to where you want to be in life. It also provides support up to the age of 25 for young people who have learning difficulties or disabilities (or both). Connexions is a modern public service and young people are actively involved in its design and delivery. The college works in partnership with Connexions through Learner Support Services, making sure that all students get chance to meet the Personal Advisor responsible for the college. The Personal Advisor can give you information, advice and practical help with all sort of things that might be affecting you at school, college, work or in your personal or family life. Connexions can also refer you to specialist support if it is needed. The Connexions office is right next to the main college site at The Green. We also have a weekly timetabled Connexions Service on both college sites.

STAFFORDSHIRE

The Diploma is a new qualification that combines theoretical study with practical experience and is part of the 14-19 Reform Programme being rolled out nationally over the next five years. Designed to equip young people for the fast changing world they are growing up in, the Diplomas offer exciting choices and opportunities to equip young people properly for adult life and help them enjoy a brighter future. You can study a Diploma at school or college and they are available at three levels; Foundation, Higher & Advanced. Diplomas will cover 17 subjects, or lines of learning, and will be available in areas across the country by 2011. All Diplomas will require students to achieve a minimum standard in English, Maths and ICT, complete a project and do a minimum of 10 daysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; work experience. The Diploma will provide students with an integrated programme of study made up of different courses and awards. Foundation and Higher Diploma students can go on to study for the next level of Diploma, take a different type of qualification such as a GCSE, A level or Apprenticeship, or go on to a job with training. Diploma students will acquire the skills and knowledge, which are essential for success in employment and higher education, both related to the discipline and those which are common, like teamwork, self-management and critical thinking skills. CCTC is currently offering 14-19 Diplomas in Hair & Beauty and IT.

Gordonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Restaurant Gordonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is a new state-of-the-art training restaurant for Catering students, which is also a very popular venue for diners, staff, students and members of the public. With theme nights and private bookings, Gordonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is a popular venue to enjoy culinary delights from around the world at very reasonable prices. The kitchen is equipped with the latest technology and we even have live video links with the kitchen so that diners may see food being prepared. Because of the popularity of this facility appointments do need to be booked in advance.

Every Child and Person Matters At Cannock College we recognise that every learner matters, therefore throughout your time with us you will cover topics such as Being Healthy, Staying Safe, Enjoying and Achieving, Making a Positive Contribution and Economic Well-Being. These are delivered in a number of ways, from crash courses in driving to cooking competitions!

Education Maintenance Allowance EMA is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 a week for those who meet the entitlement criteria.

And you could also get a bonus of £100 in January and July. Bonuses depend on the progress you make with your course. That’s potentially £400 extra money over the two years.

It is paid directly into your bank account (not your parents’) if you stay on in education at school or college after your GCSEs, and is available during term time for any academic or vocational course (up to level 3) which involves at least 12 hours of guided learning per week. If you’re entitled, you’ll receive your EMA payment every week of your course as long as you turn up to your classes and show commitment to your course. Most young people will be able to get EMA for two to

Learner Support Fund The Learner Support Fund aims to help students whose access to education might otherwise be inhibited through financial constraints. The fund is used to assist as many students as possible in alleviating hardship and the college encourages applications from all those eligible. The funds are used mainly to provide assistance with costs of travel, childcare and essential kits and uniforms. Applications to this fund are assessed on an individual basis. Adult Learning Grant 12

The grant is aimed at helping adults studying full time with the costs of learning. It pays up to £30 a week (subject to financial assessment) to learners who are over the age of 19 are studying for a first full level 2 or level 3 qualification (see page 14 for levels explained). In terms of eligibility, learners who receive benefits such as Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit and Tax Credits can receive ALG as can those in receipt of Child Benefit. Working with Staffordshire University Staffordshire University Regional Federation (SURF) has been in operation since 2000. Students can study for several Foundation Degees at Cannock Chase Technical College and the courses are all validated by Staffordshire University. You can apply for a Foundation Degree even if you don’t have traditional qualifications, as long as you have the desire and ability to succeed you will be considered. The Foundation Degree also opens up the opportunity for you to gain professional recognition and other higher level qualifications. Achieve a Foundation Degree and you will be well on your way to a suitable honours degree.

Fees As a full time student aged 16 – 18 following a further education course, and resident in the UK or an EU Country for 3 years or more, you are exempt from the payment of tuition fees. Students aged 16 – 18 will not be required to pay a college enrolment fee. If you are in receipt of a means tested benefit and are over 19 you may also be exempt from paying tuition fees. How do I start? 1

Complete the application form in this prospectus and send in to Admissions, Learner Support Services, Cannock Chase Technical College, The Green, Cannock WS11 1UE.

Our Admissions team will contact you to arrange a time for you to come in and attend an interview. Confirmation of the interview time will be sent via post.

You will arrive for interview with curriculum team to ensure that you are applying for the course that is best suited to your ability.

A letter will be sent our to you with your formal offer. If you wish to accept the offer you must return the reply slip. A later letter will be sent out to you in August letting you know when to come and enrol. As you enrol you will be given details on your induction programme.

Based at The Green, the College runs a Hair and Beauty Salon to allow hair-dressing and beauty students exposure to a real working environment with regular â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;clientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. A wide range of hair and beauty treatments is available at a fraction of the cost that external salons charge. Many students as well as members of the public choose to take advantage of this on-site pampering facility. A branch of the hair and beauty salon is also run at the Aelfgar Rugeley Centre. Because of the popularity of this facility appointments do need to be booked in advance.

This is a one year full-time / two year part-time course with two pathways, the Health Studies pathway and the Combined Studies pathway. Where is it held?

An Apprenticeship in Customer Service allows you to gain on the job training in a work placement. Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true - but as an Apprentice you really do get the best of both worlds.

Who is the Examining Body?

This is a one year intensive hairdressing course where you will study all aspects of hairdressing both theory and practical. You will study all aspects of hairdressing, theory and practical including shampoo and conditioning treatments, perming, colouring, cutting, blow-drying and setting.

City & Guilds

You will then be asked to select one optional unit from reception duties, working as a team or basic plaiting techniques.

What qualifications do I need to get on it? You are required to have two GCSEs at grades ‘c’ or above or equivalent qualifications. You must be able to work as part of a team, and hold good communication, artistic and co-ordination skills.

What can I do next? This will allow you to progress on to N.V.Q Level 3, which is an advanced level course.

Who is it suitable for? Anybody that is interested in the hairdressing and beauty industry and would like to become a qualified hairstylist.

NVQ 2 Apprenticeship & NVQ 3 Advanced Apprenticeship What does this course cover?

An Apprenticeship in Hairdressing allows you to gain on the job training in a work placement. Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true - but as an Apprentice you really do get the best of both worlds. Your Apprenticeship will give you a unique experience of gaining your hairdressing qualification along with gaining experience and friendship within a working environment. You will be placed in one of our numerous salons or you can gain your own working environment with guidance and support from our team of work-based trainers. Whilst working in your salon you will be trained on day release style training, visiting our college once a week to gain your theory knowledge. Your practical training will be targeted within our salon. All practical work will be either assessed with a salon assessor or you will be given placement officer that will be booked through yourself to view and asses your work within the salon. All students who wish to join our course will be expected to complete their Key Skills qualification along with their NVQ.

What qualifications do I need to get on it?

We prefer you to hold at least 5 GCSE Qualifications at D or above (this is preferable due to the course structure). You do not need to hold any prior qualification within Hairdressing to be accepted on to the course.

Who is it suitable for?

Any one who has a flare for style or who expresses a creative style. If you can work well within a team and can easily communicate with all ages and gender then this course is ideal for you. If you have the dedication to succeed in the world of work, and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not afraid to commit yourself to one, two or even three years of training and study, then an Apprenticeship could be for you.

Where is it held?

The majority of your training will take place in your work placement. You will be required to attend college at The Green, Cannock for one day a week.

How long does it take?

The length of your course will dependent on yourself, we give you a time scale of 22 months to complete your entire course. This can be shorter with hard work and commitment from you. All salon work will be assessed through salon assessors or your placement officer. Salon work will be targeted with your salon trainer present.

What qualification will I get?

Your will receive a full NVQ City & Guilds Level 2 / Level 3 qualification along with a Communication Level 1 / 2 Certificate and Application of Number Level 1 / 2 Certificate. On completion of the full framework you will receive a bonus payment.

How long does it take?

What qualifications do I need to get on it? This will be assessed on an individual basis and all applicants will be interviewed. What does this course cover?

When does it start?

An Apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle allows you to gain on the job training in a work placement. Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true - but as an Apprentice you really do get the best of both worlds.

Apprenticeships start throughout the year, not just in September, so you can apply at any time.

What qualification will I get?

This course will help you to develop an understanding of working life with some vocational taster modules and core subjects:

Skills for Life Certificate City & Guilds ETS Entry Level 3 Basic / Key Skills at the appropriate level

Vocational tasters are likely to be taken from the following: Car Valeting and Motor Vehicle, Catering, Construction and Workshop Skills, Caring, Hairdressing, Art and Information Communication Technology. The course will focus on Skills for Life, literacy and numeracy at pre-entry level.

What qualifications do I need to get on it? You will be accepted on the basis of interview where there is relevant experience, maturity and independence. Students that have successfully completed the Socialisation and Communication or Towards Essential Living Skills courses are also eligible to apply.
