It has been a lively couple of months in the K&B sector, with a host of exhibitions, showroom openings and product launches keeping us busy. In fact, ever since the Milan fair in April – from which we are still bringing you even more great innovations; this month particularly from the world of bathrooms – things have been pre y much non-stop.
It’s a reassuring sign that, despite the challenges businesses throughout the sector are facing, there are plenty of reasons for a positive outlook. Recent showroom openings and refurbishments reveal some bold long-term ambitions, while our visit to the InstallerSHOW in Birmingham last month highlighted innovation in installation speed and quality across all facets of kitchens and bathrooms.
We chat to iconic designer and architect Antonio Ci erio in this issue too, for the lowdown on his ne new collection for bathroom brand Duravit.
Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who has submi ed their projects and products to this year’s designerati awards which have now closed for entries. We’ve received some superb work once again and will now set about the task of compiling them for our judges to assess over the coming months.

Appliance manufacturer Miele has launched a new collection of angled cooker hoods. Available in three colourways – bronze patina, concrete and ma black – the hoods are intended to add visual impact to any minimalist kitchen or complement a more eclectic kitchen design. The brand also says the hoods are around 20% quieter compared to previous models, with 50dB in the highest se ing.
The new angled wall hoods feature reduced dimensions for a discreet appearance. The hood body measures H42cm by D23cm with widths from 60cm to 90cm, depending on the model.
A steeper glass front panel with 70˚ angle creates more headroom for the user, while the front panels come with or without an opening or edge extraction depending on speci cation. Bespoke kitchen makers Martin Moore and interior design duo Studio Vero joined forces to create a kitchen space for this year’s WOW!house at the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour. Since its inception in 1975, Martin Moore has designed and built bespoke furniture, handmade in its Yorkshire workshops using traditional methods. To mark its 50th anniversary, Martin Moore is showcasing the Legacy Collection: a new kitchen design featuring sleek lines and a restrained aesthetic. Made from natural oak in a pale washed nish, the kitchen cabinetry has been designed with simplicity and natural beauty in mind.
Richard Moore, Creative Director of Martin Moore, said: “Our new collection was created to celebrate our golden anniversary, and its contemporary, architectural elegance teamed with luxurious materials makes it perfect for today’s open-plan homes. It looks amazing combined with Studio Vero’s distinctive aesthetic.”
Known for its use of texture and colour, Studio Vero has devised a pale e of green and burgundy combined with warm
tones of natural wood. Elements such as green granite surfaces and unlacquered, appliances by Gaggenau, and bright brass taps from Waterworks, are married with coloured handmade tiles on the sides of the central island, a ame stitch George Spencer Designs fabric on Rachel Donath ironwork stools and antiqued brass mesh-fronted cabinets. There is also a wine station and a hidden bar, utilising lighting, pocket doors and granite shelves.
Studio Vero commented: “We are thrilled to be participating in WOW!house 2024: we’ve watched it over the last few years and had it in our sights as something we’d love to be involved with. We know how popular it has become in such a short time, so when we were asked by Martin Moore to collaborate, we felt incredibly honoured, and it also feels timely as a celebration of our 10th anniversary of Studio Vero.
“Of all the rooms we could have been asked to create, we are delighted that it was the kitchen since it is such an important space in any home and one where people spend a lot of time, and we knew we could inject a li le of our signature magic.”

Connecting the kitchen with the garden does not always have to mean a huge extension or major structural reworking, as this Victorian galley kitchen renovation perfectly demonstrates...
Residential interiors are all too often constrained by lack of space or a challenging layout, meaning that homeowners are forced to compromise on what they really want from a kitchen.
However, some creative thinking about the galley kitchen in this Victorian terraced house – and its relationship with the garden outside – has enabled the space to become more than the sum of its parts.
Cathy Dean, Founder and CEO of Newcastle-based Studio Dean, was asked to return to this final sta e of what was a full house renovation, having previously completed the first sta e in . ean said: “Our client returned to us, asking for her small, dark galley kitchen and yard to be transformed into a bright, airy space designed for friends to gather.”
So, how can you open up a space and connect with the garden without extending or adding bi-folds? Dean explains: “Our architectural solution was to knock down the lean-to and install a huge, south-facing picture window. We then took the connected cooking idea a step further and opened up a west-facing window between the cooker and an outdoor bar area. This created a connected indoor/outdoor living space
“CONNECTIVITY DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN THAT YOU NEED TO WALK BETWEEN SPACES”
without the need for floor-to-ceiling bi-fold doors, where our culinary client could cook with her friends.
The client had a range cooker, which she thought was a must-have for a keen cook.
Dean says that whilst this can be true, in this case, it was holding her back from her ultimate goals for the space: “A range cooker brings all of the cooking into one place, which can be good, but means that you are confined to that one space, without a lot of preparation space to hand.
“We replaced the range with eye-level ovens and placed a huge hob by the window that had seating on the other side, with loads of space either side so that our client could prep, chat and do the active cooking in the most sociable spot in the house, not hunched over a range, looking at a wall.”
The design also manages to integrate a breakfast cupboard, as well as a bespoke
laundry space in tall cupboards around the door in which to hide the laundry machines, with pull-out airers and even a small heater to help clothes dry. “If a laundry room needs to be done in a small space, this is the way to do it, said ean. e used a lot of drawers in place of cupboards to maximise storage space.”
It’s all part of a design scheme that maximises functionality, utilising bespoke furniture, neutral and bright palettes, and outdoor seating, to deliver a feeling of openness in the space without the need to further extend the property.

Ideal Standard is launching its new La Dolce Vita range, the latest addition to the Atelier Collections. The range has been designed by Chief Design O cer Roberto Palomba and has been inspired by its famous namesake expression – the sweet life.
La Dolce Vita features solutions for the entire bathroom, from vanities and vessels, toilets, bidets and bathtubs to mixer taps, shower products and accessories. The new range has been designed to be compatible with Ideal Standard’s wider product portfolio as part of the company’s Singular philosophy, meaning designers and customers can customize the products to suit their vision.
Speaking about the collection, Palomba said: “With this new range, I aimed to reinterpret La Dolce Vita. The phrase conjures a lifestyle where there is time to savour the beauty in small things; in the everyday. La Dolce Vita creates a tactile, expressive space whose sensuality sparks inspiration and dreams, where new ideas are born. It was important to me to capture this essence and bring it to life in every detail of this collection.”
Launching alongside La Dolce Vita, Ideal Standard’s Finesse furniture series features a modern design with subtle, recessed handles and a choice of four ma colours and two wood nishes, with one, two or four-drawer options, open shelving, and a variety of depths to t di erent room sizes and ceramic collections.
Sustainability was a crucial consideration during development, which is why the entire range is cra ed from Chain of Custody-certi ed wood sourced from sustainably managed forests.
Aesthetically, La Dolce Vita’s shape is carefully balanced between geometric shapes and forms inspired by the natural environment. The tapered shape and curved edges de ne the ceramic vanities and toilets in the collection, while the deep, ower-shaped vessel basins are available in both square and round designs.
The accompanying vanities are available in six di erent sizes, while the freestanding bathtub aims to command the bathroom space while still echoing understated elegance. All of the ings in the range are available in classic chrome or Ideal Standard’s PVD colours of brushed gold, magnetic grey and silver storm.

ntonio Citterio s first colla oration with ura it was inspired y the Golden Ratio. he result is the urena athroom ran e, which e udes timeless ele ance. Ceramic in hite or Black meets rushed stainless steel and a wide ran e of furniture finishes to create a ersatile all rounder which is equally well suited for use in pri ate or uest athrooms as in si nature properties such as hotels, medical offices, or office and restaurant restrooms.
designerati: What demands on a contemporary bathroom does Aurena fulfil?
Antonio Citterio: ith the urena athroom ran e, sou ht to i e ery simple answers to arious realities. t the wash asin we need elements for han in a towel, we need lar e anity tops, we need stora e space and it should all fit to ether perfectly. urena offers solutions for the room that o eyond mere aesthetics. e know we need a ran e of elements to cater to different spatial situations, includin dou le wash asins. hese are real thin s that reflect a real demand that oes eyond mere aesthetics.
designerati: How did you approach the Aurena bathroom range?
Citterio: e took fundamental considerations as our startin point the idea of the spatial solution, the idea of order in the athroom, and the idea of handlin water with care, which is why we reduced the si e of the wash asins, for e ample. hese were the most important initial pointers.
hen we talk a out athroom furniture, we mean o ects that are not only functional, ut that are also capa le of more. or e ample, when we think of hotel athrooms, then they need lar e anity tops and ways of creatin order. ach piece of furniture must offer space for hand towels, cosmetics, a hair dryer, the tooth rush etc. e also wanted to transpose this e perience from the hospitality sector to the pri ate athroom and e ecute it with a certain aesthetic flourish. hat was the focus.
designerati: How do you combine architecture and design in your projects?
Citterio: en a e with desi n as a
“THE GOLDEN RATIO IS ALL ABOUT THE PROPORTIONS; ABOUT HOW YOU DIVIDE UP A SPACE TO CREATE AN AESTHETIC PERCEPTION OF BALANCE”
component of architecture projects. As an architect you’re well aware of the problems in construction projects and try to give an answer to these. I think that in general it’s an Italian tradition, and in particular the Milan tradition, that architects do design and not the other way round.
If you only do design, you immediately think of a really iconic object and whether it’s functional or not functional doesn’t matter. Conversely, as an architect, you really tackle the problem and look at the best way of going about solving it. Indeed, it’s no coincidence that we started by looking for spatial ‘solutions’ instead of designing an iconic object with Aurena.
designerati: To what extent is the design of Aurena inspired by the Golden Ratio?
Citterio: The Golden Ratio is all about the proportions, about how you divide up a space to create an aesthetic perception of balance that looks pleasant to you. The elegant integrated dividers that organize the area into differently sized sub-areas in accordance with the rules of the Golden
Ratio are a key component of the design. The aesthetic effect that this achieves is important. The bathroom has become a personal space that conveys satisfaction. Here’s it’s no longer about mere function.
designerati: What does the bathroom mean to you personally?
Citterio: In comparison to earlier times, when the bathroom merely served a practical purpose and was about pure function – perhaps for a large family – today it’s become a more personal room and not least a living space. In my own bathroom, I have comfy chairs and books, I watch the news and listen to music. For me, it’s the place where I can withdraw, be myself and start and end the day on as harmonious a note as possible. This works especially well because my wife and I have separate bathrooms, which is completely normal in the USA, where she grew up.

Italian manufacturer ARAN Cucine has once again teamed up with iconic Japanese designer Makio Hasuike to revisit its 2016 Sipario kitchen collaboration
Taking its name from the Italian reference to theatre curtains, Sipario is intended to harness the theatrical potential of the kitchen space, providing a stage on which the art of cooking can be showcased.
Components and con guration have been re-evaluated to enhance various details of the range. Presented at EuroCucina 2024 in Milan, the new composition in natural oak aims to provide a synthesis of design, aesthetics, and functionality.
With its island suspended from the oor thanks to an elegant black metal structure – available in di erent nishes – it can be used as a preparation surface or as a table for entertaining. Equipped with open compartments and glass shelves, it provides an organized space for ingredients, dishes and utensils.
On the MATERIKA Majestic top – an exclusive line of stoneware and quartz countertops by ARAN Cucine – there is both a washing and cooking area with an induction hob. The slim composition leaves room for accessories and tools.
Although it occupies the entire length of the kitchen run, the suspended extractor hood, made of black tubular aluminium, is deconstructed and light in shape. The open cabinet and wall units allows the user to organise ingredients, dishes, and objects as required.

Laufen has commissioned Norwegian design studio Snøhe a to create a new brand experience in the bathroom manufacturer’s headquarters near Basel, Switzerland. The project included a new reception area, events space, showroom and product display area.
The careful use of raw materials in production and e cient use of water was a key aim for the project. Patrick Lüth, Managing Director of Snøhe a Studio, said: “It was important to us that the core of the brand was the focus in the newly-designed Laufen Forum. The essence of Laufen is represented in the tension between materiality, design and technical perfection.”
The new entrance area features clay and brass; two key
