St. Louis Park Public Schools and the City of St. Louis Park have numerous ways in which they help both youth and adults pursue their dreams. Here are just some of the many options available.

St. Louis Park Public Schools

The program is based on positive youth development research that comes specifically from the work of the late Dr. Peter Benson, founder of the Search Institute. The central component of “Sparks,” is the idea of a young person’s interests and how much support they experience from their parents, other adults and friends to identify and nurture those interests to become lifelong passions. When people are really happy, energized and passionate about their talents, interests or hobbies, we say they have a “spark” in their life. True sparks, as we describe them to young people, give them a sense of direction or purpose in life.

A world of opportunity awaits St. Louis Park Public Schools students as they explore college and career options throughout their schooling. The following programs outline the opportunities available for elementary, middle, and high school students:

St. Louis Park Middle School At St. Louis Park Middle School, Deans Delana Brinkman, Gina Magnuson, and Randy Zutz deliver two to three College and Career Ready lessons each year at each grade level. Topics presented to sixth graders include goal-setting, learning styles, and career cluster finder in Naviance. Topics presented to seventh graders include goal-setting, post-secondary options, and Career Key in Naviance. Topics presented to eighth graders include goal-setting, resume builder in Naviance, and a field trip to the University of Minnesota.

Elementary School Counseling Program: Igniting SPARKS in students to learn and grow in the future

Career and College Readiness is a vital component for our high school to help prepare students for their future. Many students feel pressured to make decisions about their future as they approach the end of high school. The reality is that many people change paths a few times before landing on a career.

The 2017-18 school year marks the seventh year of the Elementary School Counseling Program. The program began with generous support from the U.S. Department of Education to start and implement the program and this is the third year the program has been funded through the school district. We will provide proactive large group lessons to all of our K-5 students.

Explorations and authentic learning experiences while attending high school is a way to highlight the importance of the variety of professions. During the four years of high school, students focus on several elements of career and college development as they create their own Personal Learning Plan through 32 required career and college advisory sessions (8 per year).

St. Louis Park Elementary Schools

Licensed school counselors address the three domains: Academic, Social/ Emotional and Post-Secondary support. The most important component is exposure to the many educational and work options available to students in the future. This has been accomplished through college t-shirts days, “When I Grow Up” dress-up days, and Career-APalooza events, to name a few.

By helping students identify their sparks, we are able to help them make short and long-term goals. In so doing, we help them identify positive behaviors, make good social and academic choices, begin career exploration and be upstanders (as opposed to bystanders) in bullying situations. This program also works closely with school staff members and parents to create a caring climate and atmosphere for our students. For more information relating to classroom lessons and resources for at home, please visit the Elementary School Counseling webpage at: www.sparksinslp.com.

Career Pathways Advisory Board WHO WE ARE • Business and industry professionals • Post secondary leadership • High school teachers and staff • District staff representation • 44 members/representatives and counting

City of St. Louis Park St. Louis Park Police Department

We are energetic and dynamic professionals who are highly motivated to engage with students about their futures! We are insightful and experienced leaders who help students understand their strengths and career passions. We are dedicated and creative teachers willing to build relationships with other leaders to offer more opportunities for students. We are school administrators ensuring alignment with the District’s Strategic Plan and high school outcomes. WHAT WE DO

The St. Louis Park Police Department sponsors a Police Explorer Post, which provides young adults ages 14-21 with hands-on experiences, skills and opportunities to explore a law enforcement career. For more information about the Police Explorer program, contact Officer Dennis Hagen at dhagen@stlouispark.org or 952-924-2618. Other opportunities for youth in the Police Department include internships with the Joint Community Police Partnership (JCPP) and Community Outreach. For more information about JCPP internships, contact Afton Martens, JCPP Coordinator, at amartens@stlouispark.org or 952-924-2185. For information about Community Outreach internships, contact Breanna Freedman at bfreedman@stlouispark.org or 952-952-2184.

We ensure the development and delivery of high quality programming, relevant curriculum and experiential opportunities. • We help students view their futures through their skills and strengths.

• We support teachers to maintain their skills and knowledge. • We advocate for innovation and provide legislative support.

We welcome community and business leaders. No membership needed to help students! Contact Carrie Jennissen c.jennissen@gmail.com if you are interested in providing 1:1 mentoring, answering questions about jobs, offering internships, job shadow, classroom activities, or tours of your company.

Any St. Louis Park resident can be involved in the public safety of the community by learning hands-only CPR then downloading the PulsePoint smartphone app. Via the app, bystanders who are trained in CPR will be notified if someone within close proximity in a public place has a cardiac event. The app also lets the user know the location of the closest AED. Administering hands-only CPR and using an AED until emergency crews can arrive can help increase the chances of survival for the victim. Learn more at pulsepoint.org, and download the app via the Apple store or Google Play.

City Internships The City of St. Louis Park offers paid internships in many of its city departments, including human resources, fire and police departments, engineering, communications and others. Teens may also find seasonal paid positions with the public works and recreation departments and at Westwood Hills Nature Center. Watch the employment section at stlouispark.org for information on job openings.

City Government The City of St. Louis Park regularly seeks youth representatives for many of its boards and commissions, including the Environment and Sustainability Commission, Human Rights Commission, Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, Planning Commission, Police Advisory Commission and Telecommunications Advisory Commission. Youth members serve one-year terms starting in August and generally have the same responsibilities as other commission members. For more information about openings and the application process, contact Melissa Kennedy, city clerk, at mkennedy@stlouispark.org or 952-928-2840.

Each year, Westwood Hills Nature Center takes applications for its junior naturalist positions, open to youth in grades 7-12. Junior naturalists help with kids’ programs and work with animals, among other duties. Applications for the summer of 2018 will be available starting March 1, 2018. Visit stlouispark.org for information. For information on other volunteer opportunities available through the city contact Laura Smith, wellness and volunteer coordinator, at lsmith@stlouispark.org or 952-924-2847.
