From the editor Here’s what’s happening. It’s hard to sum up all the excitement at The Shops at West End this summer and fall in just 450 words, but here goes… Exciting new retailers are opening at The Shops at West End this summer. Have you been to Parmida Home store yet? Their amazing selection of home furnishings, decór, teas and coffees will fit perfectly into your home and lifestyle. Blast Blow Dry Bar opened in July and is ready to get your hair perfectly styled for a night out on the town or for that big event. You can pamper yourself from head to toe when phresh salon spa opens in August. In the fall, we’ll welcome the fashion boutique Apricot Lane featuring celebrity-inspired and branded apparel and accessories. Figlio restaurant will also make a comeback this time at The Shops at West End, and will feature original menu items as well as new.
I hope to see you around the shopping center. Say “hello” and let me know what you think of everything we have to offer.
Speaking of food, have you enjoyed dinner on one of our outdoor patios yet this summer? Whether you’re looking for Italian, sushi, Mexican, Chinese, Irish or American fare, our restaurants have you well covered. In fact, Rojo’s patio was voted “Best Patio in the Park” by St. Louis Park Patch readers. There’s nothing better than enjoying dinner on a patio and then taking in a summer blockbuster at the state-of-the-art ShowPlace ICON Theatre or live music at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill. Patios are open all summer and well into fall. And speaking of fall, before we know it school will be back in session. I’m sure kids don’t like to hear that, but perhaps some new duds from The Shops at West End retailers will help soften the blow. Check out the “Back to Cool” photo feature inside this issue for fun, fresh style ideas from our fashion and accessory merchants. And, lest I forget to mention the events happening at the shopping center. Lunchtime kids’ concerts and the Farmers Market will continue on Wednesdays through the rest of summer. Aug. 15 is the celebration of Creative Kidstuff turning 30 years old, full details on the celebration inside this issue! In August we also play home to “You Betcha! Minnesota Made Festival” with live music, food, drinks and activities. Late October brings the annual Twin Cities Film Fest to the ICON Theatre with movie screenings, star visits and parties; learn more about the Film Fest inside this issue of Compass. I hope to see you soon around the shopping center. Say “hello” and let me know what you think of everything we have to offer.

P.S. Perhaps you’ve seen the construction happening next to Rainbow and Noodles & Company. That is the future home of The Flats at West End, a 119 unit luxury rental complex opening next summer. Could you imagine living amongst the best collection of fashion, food and entertainment in the Twin Cities, just minutes from downtown Minneapolis?

There is no cover charge for the concerts, but goodwill donations will be accepted to benefit Minnesota’s own Courage Center, a non-profit rehabilitation and resource center that empowers people with disabilities to realize their full potential in every aspect of life. “We invite people who attend to donate what they can to Courage Center. A concert with this type of line-up would easily be $25 a ticket, but we wanted to open it up to as many people who want to enjoy the event as possible,” said Michael Landstad, senior property manager of The Shops at West End. Ample free parking is available at the event. Event organizers suggest you use the ramps behind the ICON theater off Gamble Drive and Duke Drive. It’s not clear if Adam Levy, front man and creative force behind The Honeydogs, meant the title of their 10th studio release (and first full-length effort since 2006), What Comes After, as a statement or a question. The album’s songs merge simpler lyrical content of early works with the deceptively sophisticated music making of The Honeydogs’ more recent offerings. Despite its sense of ease, the album still brings moments of unabashed rock, including the impassioned title track and the psychadelic prog number “The Devil You Do.” On What Comes After, the band truly marries its original roots sensibility with complex orchestral pop and soul arrangements. After 16 years together, the band has weathered successes and missteps, raised children, seen loves come and go, and throughout, thrived as an ensemble even when it seemed that no one was noticing. Yet with their maturity and experience, Levy never lets the band assert conceit – instead of answers, What Comes After asks questions, ponders the little things, and carries the listener along with gently lingering melodies and poetics. Sometimes it is the simplest of things that stay with you–and this collection of songs will surely cling to your heart.

Farewell Milwaukee
Davina Sowers and her guys, fresh off their European tour, will hit the You Betcha Festival stage third in the lineup. Davina and The Vagabonds are known for their high-energy stage performances, fresh sound, hardworking professionalism and ability to make any crowd happy. They liken their genre to a fresh spin on an old sound.
Formed in 2008, Farewell Milwaukee has charted a course down familiar paths blazed by folks like Jackson Browne, Ryan Adams and the Jayhawks–all focused on the power of honest, confessional songwriting with no pretense or ulterior motives.
D&TV have shared the stage with Aaron Neville, Joe Bonamassa, Ruthie Foster, Pinetop Perkins, The Mannish Boys, Robert Cray, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, James Hunter, Los Lobos, Trombone Shorty, Canned Heat and many more. Jim Hynes of Elmore Magazine says, “Davina is a modern day, female version of Louis Armstrong.” A pretty solid endorsement for what you’re going to experience at the concert. Davina and The Vagabonds consists of the lovely Davina Sowers on vocals, piano and ukulele; Michael Carvale on vocals and upright bass; Connor McRae on vocals and drums; Dan Eikmeier on vocals and trumpet; and Ben Link on vocals and trombone. Instrumentalists that can all sing: we like the sound of that (literally and figuratively)!
Learn move about Davina and The Vagabonds before the show at davinaandthevagabonds.com.
Every winter Ben Lubeck, principal songwriter and lead singer, holes himself up in his lakeside home with the goal of writing as many songs as he can. The winter of 2009/2010 provided no reprieve from brutally cold ice and snow, but Lubeck’s writing focused on warmth, hope and love. When spring broke, Farewell Milwaukee narrowed down Lubeck’s writings, creating When It Sinks In which was released on May 17. All five members of Farewell Milwaukee make no attempt to conceal their pride for their respective hometowns in the Midwest. FM features Ben Lubeck on lead vocals and guitar, Aaron Markson on lead guitar and vocals, Adam Lamoureux on keyboards and vocals, Brad Fox on drums/percussion, and Kyle Magstad on bass and vocals. Farewell Milwaukee holds value in connecting with the people and the landscape that produces such diverse talents as Bob Dylan and Prince. This Midwestern identity makes When It Sinks In the perfect accompaniment on a trek west to the Black Hills or the ideal jukebox pick at a back roads bar along the way.

Lynhurst Lynhurst is Mari, Matt, and Jake Abdo. The siblings, all in their 20s, have been playing pop-rock music together since they were children - even naming the band after their neighborhood park in Minneapolis. Lynhurst released its first full-length album Field Day in 2009, solidifying younger sister Mari as the lead singer with older brothers on guitars, keyboards and harmonies. They toured this and 2011 release One Of These Days from coast to coast, scoring a number of notable licenses and big openings for artists such as Ingrid Michaelson and Owl City.
Lynhurst releases three new songs summer 2012 under the name of its lead single Twirl as they continue to rock forward as a family and band. The new release Twirl was co-written and performed with Greg Camp (guitar player and songwriter of Smashmouth) and recorded by Kevin Augunas (engineer/producer of Cold War Kids and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros) while the Midwesterners were in sunny California. Lyrics about love, life and growing up have always come naturally to the band as lead singer Mari carries these songs with the young spirit that defines Lynhurst.

The Shops at West End Hosts the Third Annual Twin Cities Film Fest
FORGET THE WINDOW SHOPPING. TAKE IT FOR A TEST DRIVE.
On Oct. 12, the nine-day Twin Cities Film Fest will debut at The Shops at West End. This annual festival, now in its third year, aims to show audiences the best films the industry has to offer while also showcasing the Twin Cities as a hot spot to premiere work. The festival began in 2010 as a fourday event and has grown into a player on the national film showcase scene. Fifty-five films, ranging from featurelength releases to short films and documentaries, will be showcased. In 2011, such popular films as 50/50, The Bully Project and Like Crazy were shown, and panels often bring in the film’s stars. The festival is known for showing engaging films and drawing light on social issues and controversial messages, which are often discussed at these panel discussions. At the close of the festival, a number of awards are handed out, including prizes for Best Feature, North Star Award of Excellence, Shorts Film Award, Best Documentary, Best Minnesota Feature and Best Minnesota Shorts. In 2012, the festival will focus on an ever-important issue: hunger prevention in America. The festival takes places at West End’s famed ShowPlace ICON Theatre and features a number of events including a red carpet, parties and family events. To stay up-to-date on the festival lineup, for more information and to purchase passes, go to twincitiesfilmfest.org.

Taking Care of Business By Sarah Howard
The Shops at West End is bursting with enterprising entrepreneurs. From restaurateurs to retailers, they share their success stories, their tips for getting into business and how The Shops at West End works for them.
“West End is a hot new area geared toward young and chic consumers, and we wanted to be a part of that – Dean and Umit Nasifoglu

One wanted to open a unique, but affordable, boutique. One aimed to satisfy the imagination of children. One wanted to cater to mothers. Another sought to be an expert in diamond retailing. And one wanted to create an unmatched dining experience. While their businesses come from multiple fields and their business models differ, one thing stays the same: these West End retailers are business mavens.
“My greatest hope is that moms walk into our stores feeling like we are a store just for them, and out our doors confident that the Hot Mama within them has come alive again”
New mom Megan Tamte (pictured left) set out to open a boutique specifically designed for mom bodies and lifestyles. What was born is Hot Mama, a unique concept that takes into account the busy lifestyles and body changes that moms experience when first having children and as their children grow. After a particularly painful experience shopping post-baby, Tamte dreamt up a concept that allowed moms to shop in comfort and in a space devoted to moms. “At Hot Mama we believe that to be a great mom, you can’t forget about taking care of yourself,” she says. “The more confident you feel, the better mom you are.” She opened her first Hot Mama store in Edina in 2004 and has since opened 22 locations outside of Minnesota and eight locations within Minnesota, including at the Shops at West End.

Dean and Umit Nasifoglu are part of a second-generation diamond tradition. With the first location opening in 1978, Wedding Day Diamonds has grown into a top engagement ring store in the Twin Cities, with six locations.
Wedding DAY
They specialize in loose diamonds, wedding bands and engagement rings. “We know what we are good at and we stick to it. Our entire staff is specifically trained in diamonds and engagement rings.” After being part of more than 50,000 weddings, the Nasifoglus have no plans on stopping. “We have stayed true to ourselves while building our business to what it is today with an awesome staff and amazing clients.”
“We love being part of an up-and-coming community where the
small business can thrive.”

Creative Kidstuff was founded by Cynthia Gerdes in 1982. As she was working on her master’s degree, she had to write a business plan, and she chose a toy store as her plan. She never did finish her degree, but instead opened Creative Kidstuff in Linden Hills. Now, 30 years later, the local toy chain continues to thrive with six Twin Cities locations, including The Shops at West End. “We are lucky to have had the privilege of growing up with three generations here in the Twin Cities,” says president and CEO of 15 years Roberta Bonoff. “We love to see children grow and learn and play.”

“We were very attracted to upbeat feeling and trendy lifestyle of the people who frequent the Shops at West End” – Michelle Henry & Wesley Uthus

Michele Henry and Wesley Uthus (pictured left to right) opened Primp Boutique to fill a hole they saw in the local clothing market: boutique clothing and accessories without the jaw-dropping price. “We are two friends that started Primp because we saw something that was missing in the market. We wanted to provide top-notch customer service and trendy clothing in a boutique environment without the hefty price tag.” With a location in St. Paul and the West End, the two friends are doing just that: giving shoppers a boutique shopping experience while still remaining affordable. “Our stores are a combination of our customer service, quick turn over of our trendy clothing and clean décor,” Henry and Uthus say. With new designers arriving regularly and trendy accessories lining the shelves, these two friends have accomplished their goal.

regular guests who have been with us since day one.” Others love the lively vibe of the center. “We were very attracted to upbeat feeling and trendy lifestyle of the people who frequent the West End,” Henry and Uthus says. “We also love that there are so many attractions besides clothing that are provided by the shopping center.” Others love the location. “We loved the location of the West End and its ease of access from the suburbs or downtown,” says Bonoff. “It fits our brand because we want to serve families, and this store is in the heart of many neighborhoods.” Tamte agrees. “The area is a nice, central spot for a lot of communities,” she says. Talebi echoes her thoughts. “We felt strongly about [West End’s] proximity to downtown Minneapolis and felt it was a gateway to the western suburbs.”
Kam Talebi (above right), CEO of Kaskaid Hospitality, the parent company of CRAVE, built the restaurant out of a passion to create a dining experience unlike any other. “We wanted a dining experience centered around quality, locally sourced food, a chic atmosphere and diverse choices,” he says. With eight locations, including their latest in Cincinnati, Crave continues to grow. “We look forward to continuing to expand the brand into new markets,” Talebi says.
But why have these retailers ended up at the Shops at West End? What does the West End offer them that can’t be found anywhere else? Some love the customers and community. “West End is a hot, new area geared toward young and chic consumers, and we wanted to be a part of that,” Dean and Umit Nasifoglu say. “We love being part of an up-and-coming community where the small business can thrive. It is so refreshing to have local stores as our neighbors instead of large chains.” Talebi loved the clientele. “The audience is chic, casual, and vibrant,” he says. “We have outstanding
