It’s not so much the heat as it is the humidity.

The heat and humidity comment is one of my favorite Minnesota-isms.

Afterall, it’s true – summer can be very muggy. However, after our long winter I’ll take it, even into November if it wants to bring it.

Our patios are great places to reconnect with friends over a cold beer and a burger.

In this issue of Compass we feature a plethora of all things Minnesota.

Check out the story on Minnesota native, and Mad Men actor, Vincent Kartheiser who visited the West End for a photo shoot and interview.

Donning both a formal and casual look from MINQ , we chatted with Kartheiser on his road to making it big in Hollywood and his experience with the paparazzi.

When it comes to Minnesota-made products, the shops at the West End does not disappoint. From jewelry and dresses, to beer and wine, there are hundreds of goods hailing from the land of 10,000 lakes.

We outline some of the many available for you inside this issue.

St. Jude Children’s Hospital held their first ever “St. Jude Red Carpet for Hope” event May 23 at ShowPlace ICON Theatre. Guests were treated to a reception served by CRAVE Catering prior to a screening of Star Trek Into Darkness and an afterparty at Figlio. Star Trek actress Berit Francis was on hand with her daughter, former St. Jude patient, Marit. The event had over 200 guests and raised more than $30,000 for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Parktacular Rock The Block WHEN: June 14, 2013 St. Louis Park’s summer celebration, Parktacular, held their annual “Rock the Block” concert at The Shops at West End for a second year in a row. Residents came out to enjoy great music by Casablanca Orchestra and Ragtown, morsels from local food trucks, and drinks from Cooper Pub & Restaurant and Rojo. The four-day community-wide festival also included a parade, Saturday night concert and plenty of activities for kids and families.

A number of Peter Hobart staff members were on hand for the benefit concert.

The Shops at West End played host to a benefit concert featuring The Covers to raise money for families affected by a May field trip tragedy at a Saint Paul park. Two students from St. Louis Park’s Peter Hobart Elementary School were killed and two more were injured during a sudden mudslide while on the field trip. The concert, which raised more than $850, was presented

You may have been hearing a lot about popular barre fitness classes lately - sessions that incorporate dance and yoga into a low impact full-body workout.

The Shops at West End is excited that Haute Barre™Studio now calls us home.

Haute Barre is a lifestyle, a dynamic fitness experience that delivers an effective total body workout in an upbeat and motivating boutique environment.

The program was developed

by Los Angeles Master Barre teacher Nancy Norby. Norby has trained numerous celebrities, models, athletes and teachers, many of whom have continued on in successful fitness careers of their own.

We chatted with Haute Barre founder/owner Amber Eggert to gain insight on how her studio and classes work. weC: What is Barre?

AE: Barre is an innovative approach to fitness that fuses elements of ballet, modern dance and yoga while emphasizing core abdominal strength. The end result is a long, lean physique with improved flexibility. The low impact technique is great for all ages and skill levels. weC: How often should someone take barre classes to see results?

AE: Most members see a significant change in their bodies after six weeks by attending

Everyone’s bodies and fitness objectives are different. I invite clients to reach out to their favorite instructor or anyone on the Haute Barre team about their goals and the best ways to reach them! weC: Many of your instructors have dance backgrounds; what if someone has no dance experience?

AE: Haute Barre is not a program tailored only for dancers. In fact, some of our most inspiring instructors and clients have zero formal dance experience. The barre and exercises are used to help every member develop strong, lean muscles. weC: What type of classes would you recommend a new client start with?

AE: We recommend that all new clients take our original haute SHAKE-IT class at least once.

Haute SHAKE-IT offers intensive toning and deep stretching, and is a great introduction to our program. In this class, you will learn the basic moves and terminology that you can expect to see in our other class types. weC: What can someone expect at their first class?

AE: Expect to feel the burning and shaking. All Haute Barre classes are designed to challenge at every level. We offer modifications and challenges for everyone, regardless of experience or ability.

Rojo wraps a scoop of vanilla ice cream in corn flakes and quickly deep fry it to create a crispy shell around the stillcold ice cream. They then dust it with cinnamon and a drizzle of honey. Yum.

Grilled Lumberjack Steaks with Wild Mushroom Sauce and Potato Wedges Steaks Ingredients: 4 Omaha Steaks porterhouse steaks 1 cup piquant tomato salsa 2 tablespoons olive oil Potato Wedges Ingredients: 6 large unpeeled baking potatoes, cut in half lengthwise 2 tablespoons peanut or vegetable oil Salt to taste Freshly cracked black pepper Wild Mushroom Sauce Ingredients: 2 cups beef stock ½ cup sliced smoked bacon 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 cup sliced chanterelles or other wild mushrooms (about 4 ounces) ½ cup scallions cut into 1-inch lengths 1 tablespoon minced fresh marjoram Dash of Worcestershire sauce Procedures: 1. Preheat the oven to 350° F and prepare the grill. (Or, alternatively, the steaks can be broiled or sautéed in a heavy pan or skillet using 1 tablespoon of hot olive oil or safflower oil; they will take approximately the same time to cook as they will on the grill.)

2. Place the salsa in a food processor or blender and puree until smooth. With the machine running, add the oil in a slow, steady stream until well blended.

The mixture should be thin but not soupy. Transfer the salsa mixture to a large shallow dish and coat both sides of the steaks. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit at room temperature for 1 hour.

3. Cut the potato halves lengthwise into 3 triangular wedges. Place the wedges in a mixing bowl and toss with the oil, salt, and pepper. Transfer the potatoes to a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until golden brown and tender.

4. To prepare the mushroom sauce, heat the stock in a saucepan over mediumhigh heat and reduce to 1 cup. Place the bacon in a sauté pan and cook over medium heat until almost crisp.

Remove the bacon from the pan and drain on paper towels.

5. Melt the butter in the same sauté pan.

Add the garlic and mushrooms to the hot pan and sauté over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, until the mushrooms are tender and the garlic is lightly golden. Add the scallions and

sauté 1 minute longer. Add the reduced stock and bring the mixture to a boil.

Stir in the cooked bacon, marjoram, and Worcestershire sauce, and remove from the heat.

6. Transfer the steaks from the salsa to the hot grill. Grill for 6 to 7 minutes per side for medium-rare or 8 to 9 minutes per side for medium. The steaks should have a caramelized and roasty tomato smell when cooking.

7. To serve, spoon the liquid from the mushroom sauce onto each serving plate and arrange the vegetables from the sauce on one side of the plate.

Place a steak over the sauce, lay the potatoes next to the steak and vegetables, and serve immediately.

10 Tips for Perfect Grilling 1. Clean and pre-heat your grill on high.

2. Lightly oil everything before you put it on the grill. This helps the searing process and prevents sticking.

Steak Ingredients: 4 Omaha Steaks filet mignons 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 3 tablespoons freshly cracked black peppercorns 1 tablespoon freshly cracked red peppercorns ½ tablespoon kosher salt

Transfer to serving plates and spoon the warm sauce over steaks.

4. Sear the outside of steaks when grilling. This really helps with the flavor and juiciness.

Sauce Ingredients: 3 cups Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, or other good-quality, robust red wine 3 tablespoons butter, divided 2 shallots, minced ½ tablespoon freshly crushed black peppercorns ½ cup brandy ½ cup heavy cream ½ cup beef stock Salt to taste

for 2 minutes. Add the brandy, carefully ignite, and let flame for 3 or 4 minutes until the alcohol is burned off. Continue cooking for 2 to 3 minutes, until the pan is almost dry. Add the cream, turn up the heat to medium-high, and cook for 3 minutes. Stir in the reduced wine and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes longer. Stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter, season with salt, and simmer until 1 cup remains, about 10 minutes more.

Walking into MINQ boutique, behind sunglasses, a beard and shaggy hair, a laid-back Vincent Kartheiser is a far cry from Pete Campbell, the slick advertising account executive character he’s played on AMC’s Mad Men since 2007.

"When it comes to stage acting, there are different things to be aware of [than TV or film]. It’s a relationship between you and the audience.

West End Compass magazine caught up with the Apple Valley native at the West End on a sunny Monday morning when he had the day off from rehearsals for the Guthrie Theater’s upcoming Pride & Prejudice, in which he’ll play the aloof Mr. Darcy.

He’s back to his old stomping grounds through the summer with an apartment in the Warehouse District. The production runs through Aug. 31 and will be directed by Guthrie artistic director Joe Dowling. “The Guthrie is exactly where I want to be,” Kartheiser said.

About two weeks into rehearsals, the show was very much still in flux and days before our shoot it had been announced that University of Minnesota alumna Ashley Rose Montondo would be playing the featured role of Elizabeth Bennet opposite Kartheiser. “We’re still very much making changes to the show,” he says, adding that the beauty of the stage is that things can “adapt as the show goes on.”

And at his fitting at MINQ boutique it becomes clear that Kartheiser truly is quick to adapt.

While trying on a pinstriped scott james suit, he opts to wear his own brown wingtips and adds a belt to the ensemble.

While filming Mad Men in Los Angeles, he often spends 16-hour days, five days a week dressed as Manhattan-bred Pete Campbell.

You could say he knows his way around a suit. “I know when something fits,” he says, adding that Tommy Hilfiger is the best brand for his cut, but he also likes suits by Boss and Brooks Brothers.

His casual look from MINQ includes a suede suit jacket by Moods of Norway and salmon colored pants by scott james, which

he calls “hot pants” and took home from the shoot. Kartheiser says the outfit is an upgrade from what he considers casual, saying that he spends time off-set in jeans and a T-shirt.

After fittings at MINQ, the next stop is a haircut and shave at Roosters. He’s midrehearsal for a period piece, so he can’t take off much hair, but the muttonchops he showed up with can go.

Manager Shannon Schoettler quickly discovers his strange hairline of short, buzzed hair.

Kartheiser reveals that his character’s receding hairline — that has become so notorious it sparked a season-by-season slideshow on Vulture — is fake. “It was my idea,” Kartheiser says of Campbell’s balding. “I’m less recognizable in person this way.” Voluntary hair loss is not something most men would be excited about. But the self-deprecating Kartheiser seems unbothered. “I’m not worried about it. [Hair loss] hasn’t happened to me yet, but I’m sure it will. It runs in my family,” he said. “I’m getting married, so it doesn’t matter,” he says with a laugh. “There are bigger parts about you that you can’t change, like your personality.”

Kartheiser played coy and kept mum about his upcoming nuptials to Alexis Bledel of Gilmore Girls fame, but did hint that the wedding will take place in 2014. The two met while Bledel played Kartheiser’s unstable mistress in season 5 of Mad Men, and began dating after filming.

“Vincent called me and said ‘I met her and she is the one,” and my heart lept for joy,” said his mother Janet. She calls Bledel unassuming, kind, gentle and a delight. “Companionship is a wonderful thing.”

While he won’t give up the dirt on wedding details, it’s easy to tell that Kartheiser is happy to be settling down. A smile comes to his face when he shares that later that day, himself, Janet and Bledel are going to visit his 90-yearold grandmother. Bledel is making cookies for the occasion, as it’ll be the first time she’s met the matriarch. “She is so comfortable around family and really enjoys it,” Janet said.

“Weddings are for family,” Kartheiser says.

“When I look through old family photos, it’s always wedding photos where all of the generations are together.”

Family is important to Kartheiser. “I come home as often as I can,” he says. “Family keeps me grounded.” The youngest of six has nieces and nephews in their late teens and twenties, and Kartheiser is quick to gush about them.

“They’re all really great kids,” says the proud uncle. “It’s always a delight,” Janet says of having her son home. “It’s just wonderful.”

A true Minnesota boy, Kartheiser listens to The Current — “I love that station,” he says — and in 2012 participated in the station’s Theft of the Dial. Kartheiser’s playlist included songs from local artists Felt, a hip-hop duo that includes Slug of Minneapolis-based Atmosphere, as well as national artists like Dr. Dog and Curtis Mayfield. “I stressed out more about that than I should have,” he says of picking the perfect songs. “I had to have the right six songs. I was rearranging my playlist up until the last minute. I’m not that hip to music but I told them what I was going to play and I was kind of impressed. Even [the disc jockeys] didn’t know some of the songs.”

Kartheiser grew up on the stage — what he calls an “actor’s medium” — and starred in a number of shows at the Children’s Theatre Company, including Pippi Longstocking and Our Town. His debut at the Guthrie came at age seven when he appeared in A Christmas Carol as Tiny Tim. His upcoming performance will be the first at the new Guthrie, which was rebuilt and moved to the riverfront in 2006.

“The way the stage is built, you really can see the expressions on people’s faces,” he says.

“When it comes to stage acting, there are different things to be aware of [than TV or

film],” he says. “It’s a relationship between you and the audience. Every night is a unique conversation that you’re having with a whole new group of people.”

Janet was determined that each of her children would partake in some kind of art form as they grew up. Some chose orchestra or ballet.

Vincent chose theater. “Once he became involved in acting, that’s what he wanted to do,” she says. “It was just natural for him. He never saw acting as work.”

Kartheiser moved to Los Angeles at the age of 14 and quickly landed roles in such 1990s hits as Little Big League, The Indian in the Cupboard and Alaska. After a string of independent films, he dove into television, starring in Angel as Connor until 2004 and landed the role of sad and pompous Pete Campbell in 2007. “I can’t even tell you how much fun I have playing this character,” he told The New York Times.

“His character is constantly taking on new dimensions,” said Janet. “He’s so unpredictable and colorful, you never know what’s going to happen next.”

Mad Men won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for its first four seasons. “Nobody knew what Mad Men was going to be,” said Janet, who gathers every Sunday to watch the series with family. “It wasn’t until it aired and we started to realize the public’s reaction to this very interesting series that we became more and more excited that Vincent had landed a winner.”

The show famously went through contract disputes after season 4 in 2011, but returned in spring 2012 for season 5 and spring 2013 for season 6. Next year, season 7 will be the show’s last. What’s to come for Kartheiser when the show is off the air? He has a few projects in the works but wouldn’t go into much detail. He’s continued to land film roles throughout Mad Men, including In Time and voiceover work in the animated film Rango.

For now, Kartheiser is enjoying the success of Mad Men and his opportunities to get back to the stage as often as possible, saying he tries to do a show during every off-season. “I like to go back to where it started and refresh myself,” he says. “The stage gives you the most opportunity to create and edit your character every night with pure expression.”

Kartheiser is quick to compliment the stage skills of his Mad Men costars, calling John Slattery, who plays Roger Sterling, a “stage monster” and saying that he hopes to get out to New York to see Rich Sommer, who grew

“There are tons of great actors in Minneapolis, probably several who are much more appropriate to play Mr. Darcy,” he said. “I’m realistic about the fact that one of the reasons that I’ve come in to do this show and the Guthrie is interested is because [the celebrity] does bring a certain amount of attention. Although Jane Austen brings the most amount of attention, and rightfully so. People love her work.”

And while shooting at Cooper, Kartheiser’s desire to entertain shines through with sporadic whistling, singing, dancing and teasing. A natural in front of the camera, his claim that people hate his face catches the crew off guard.

MINQ owner Stacey Finnegan, former owner of il Vostro Boutique at 50th & France, has known Kuhlman for years and the two attend the same church, which is where they first talked about her boutique carrying scott james. “It was just such an obvious and natural fit,” Finnegan says. The menswear line includes shirts, pants, sweaters, jackets, suit separates and shoes — and it’s flying off the shelf. And the greatest benefit of a local designer selling in a local shop? The chance to meet-and-greet. Kuhlman will be at MINQ on Sept. 28 for an instore designer event from 12-6 p.m.

PRIMP When aspiring designers Michele Henry and Wesley Uthus opened Primp boutique in St. Paul, they started out modest. Now, three years later, they’ve expanded to three locations (in addition to the St. Paul and West End locations, they opened a White Bear Lake location in June) and the duo are no longer aspiring – in April 2013 they launched their own clothing line, Henry + Martin.

Described by the designers as “versatile and chic,” the line allows for flexibility, such as a dress that can also be worn as a skirt. “We noticed a void in the market and wanted to design pieces we were craving: longer hemlines, comfortable yet playful knits and items that you can wear multiple ways without paying a

fortune for them,” the designers said.

Because the store owners are also the designers, they have the opportunity to hear feedback from customers on the spot and adjust accordingly.

“It was a great chance [for us] to listen to what our customers liked about the line and what they were looking for in addition to the pieces we created.” While the line currently only includes knitwear, the designers are looking to expand. Plus, the designers were conscious to keep the line made in the United States.

Manufactured in Los Angeles, the line is both chic and affordable, with all pieces running less than $60.

A Glimpse Behind the Scenes

Q&A with Twin Cities Film Fest Organizers This fall The Shops at West End will again play host to Twin Cities Film Fest, a major mainstream film festival. We chatted with festival organizers to get a glimpse of what it takes to pull the massive event off. weC: What exactly is a film festival?

TCFF: Much like a movie theater, a film festival is composed of two elements: The movies on the screen, and the audience in the seats. Every great film festival boasts a carefully curated showcase of new films, as well as a compelling series of parties, panels and side events through which movie lovers can talk about the films, talk about new trends in the movie industry, and meet the talent behind some of the titles selected to screen.

Every year, the festival donates funds raised during the event to non-profit charities. In 2012, beneficiaries were hunger relief organizations. This year’s festival will raise money for groups that help overcome poverty.

Imagine going to an art fair where you walk through rows and rows of artist booths admiring the sculptures, paintings, jewelry, and other hand crafted artwork, chatting with other art admirers and artists as you go. A film festival is essentially the same. An exhibition of films from various genres showcased for the amusement of the audiences.

Festivals can range from a two-day competition film festival to a five-day independent festival to boost local economy to a 10-day extravaganza, which includes film premieres, educational panels, parties and networking. weC: How do you select films to show at the festival?

TCFF: Most of the films selected for the Twin Cities Film Fest come to St. Louis Park through one of three avenues: • First, filmmakers submit their newest projects for consideration, and our artistic director decides which of those films he chooses to accept.

• Second, our programmers travel to film festivals around the world in search of new visions that we want to recruit to the Twin Cities.

• Third, negotiations with major studios often allow us to offer sneak previews of major blockbusters.

Last year, we hosted the Minnesota premiere of Silver Linings Playbook, which went on to become a major Oscar contender. The first people to see the film here were the audience at the film festival. weC: How many films typically premier for the first time at your festival?

TCFF: There are different levels of premieres at film festivals. Every single film shown at the Twin Cities Film Fest is enjoying its Minnesota premiere, which is to say its very first screening in the state. Most of the films at the festival are also Midwest premieres, with a handful celebrating their U.S. or North American premieres. These films vary from independent features from across the country to local productions to major mainstream films from studios. weC: What types of awards do films win at TCFF? TCFF: Our main categories for giving recognition to outstanding films at TCFF are Best Narrative, Best Documentary, Best Short, Breakthrough Achievement and The North Star Award for Excellence.

TCFF: The significance of getting your film showcased can vary from filmmaker to filmmaker. One may simply want to showcase the film to an audience to get feedback, while another might use the film festival to network, connect with professionals and add to their resume.

Festivals can be launching pads for films as they seek out buyers and distributors, who can secure nationwide releases. For other filmmakers, it's all

about the communal festival experience - getting to meet other directors, actors, producers, and, of course, the audience.

Festival

When Billy Hallquist enters a room, there’s no question which generation he grew up in. His long graying ponytail and unshaven face are a shining example of a child of the 60s. We sat down with Hallquist to learn more about his generation of music as he pulls together Minnesota Legends acts for the August 17th “You Betcha! Minnesota-Made Festival” (Retro Edition).

When asked about the big names of the '60s and '70s coming to the Minnesota-Made Festival, a few stood out to be recognized by Hallquist.

Lonnie Knight, a solo artist and member of the Rave-Ons is a virtuoso guitar guy; “he’s the créme de la créme of guitarists”, said Hallquist. He feels Knight would’ve been a worldwide sensation had Lonnie been based out of New York, L.A., Memphis, London or Liverpool.

Hallquist says the music scene in the 60s was vibrant, incredibly diverse; from pop, soul and rock to the unique underground scene. Back in the 60s and 70s, music was the only source of income for many of the bands.

They were young with no wives, no kids and no mortgages says Hallquist.

In fact, he said most Thundertree members lived with their parents as they rose to fame, eventually scoring a contract with a national label.

Hallquist also praises the stylings of guitarist Peter Lang. The press has also spoken very highly of Lang. Village Voice said “Lang is one of the finest acoustic finger-style players in the nation. His songs are complex, mercurial, lyrical and fluid.”

Hallquist says while the music has evolved over the years, “There are stark similarities between today and 40 years ago. The area is home to lots of talented bands eager to play, but a limited number of venues and customers to support those venues,” he said.

The Purple Xperience The Purple Xperience, which includes Matt “Doctor” Fink, from Prince and The Revolution, is as they say “unmistakably the most authentic Prince tribute band in the World.”

The fact that Fink and lead singer Marshall Charloff would wind up working together in a tribute to the artist they both respect and admire so much is a testament to destiny.

It began years ago when Charloff, who like Prince, taught himself to play guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums in his early teens, found himself invited to a rehearsal of Prince and The Revolution as they prepared for their renowned Purple Rain tour.

“I kept going back after that first day, I couldn’t get enough” explains Charloff. “I found a spot

where I could see through a crack in the doorway, they couldn’t see me, but I could see them perfectly. I went day after day and stood just feet away from Prince, one of the best artists of all time, as he put his band, The Revolution, through their paces. It was intoxicating, I will never forget it.”

Playing the role of the understudy would payoff for Charloff as years later he would find himself actually playing the part of Prince with none other than Doctor Fink from the band he studied years earlier at that sound stage.

“Dr. Fink is the real deal,” explains Charloff.

“After 13 years of working with Prince, 10 multi platinum albums, three Grammy’s, two American music awards, one Grammy Hall of Fame Award and 10 World tours, yes, Fink is most definitely the real deal!”

“I have seen every tribute band there is to see, and I have never seen anyone come close to Charloff’s depiction of Prince,” said Fink.

“From his performance to his wardrobe, overall look and presentation, I have no doubt that Charloff is by far the most talented and accurate Prince tribute artist in the world. Sometimes I have to remind myself I’m not performing again with Prince himself!”

The Purple Xperience is a must-see during Minnesota-Made Festival.

Minnesota Legends The Del Counts Since 1962 Minnesota's own Del Counts have been playing Hit Music for audiences across the Midwest. The Rave-Ons The Rave-Ons were a Richfield, Minnesota group who formed in the early sixties as The Knights. Around 1964 they became The RaveOns and embraced the Invasion sounds. They released three quality 45s, mainly original compositions, before breaking up in 1967. After a mere four decades of individual music-making, The Rave-Ons have reunited. He was born without a fibula. He overcame his disability and surprised many of his fans with his appearance in the popular exercise program P90X. He is now speaking to audiences across the country, telling his poignant and often humorous story of overcoming obstacles and persevering, even when the odds are stacked against you.

Inspired by The Beatles, four teens from Robbinsdale, Minnesota formed a band called The Lyncx, later changing their name to The Youngsters.

Through the mid-60s, the band was booked into high schools, colleges, ballrooms, state fairs and hotels throughout the upper midwest. In 1967 the group recorded two original songs, both written

by Keith Follese. They continued to play through the early 70s.

Stolhanske and fellow college friends Jay, Kevin, Paul, and Steve shared an interest in sketch comedy, and formed the comedy group “Charred Goosebeak.” After graduating, they moved their group to New York City and changed its name to “Broken Lizard.”

Stolhanske has written, produced and starred in all of Broken Lizards’ films – including Puddle Cruiser, Super Troopers, Club Dread, Beerfest, and their latest release The Slammin’ Salmon.

Northern Light Northern Light was formed in 1974 and made up of four members: guitarist, Spence Peterson, lead guitarist, Nick Raths, bassist, Gary Lopac and David Sandler on piano. The group shared singing roles and was particularly noted for their pristine vocals and masterful pop productions. Sandler wriote most of the material and did the arranging and producing with aid from other members of the group.

Their hit “Minnesota” remains one of the most recognizable recordings released locally.

Peter Lang Fingerstyle guitarist Peter Lang was among the many discoveries and disciples of the pioneering John Fahey, whose Takoma label issued Lang's cult-classic 1973 debut LP, The Thing at the Nursery Room Window. Born and raised in Minnesota, Lang was in middle school when a friend invited him to a Minneapolis coffeehouse for a performance by folk revival trio Koerner, Ray & Glover. Dave Ray's picking style would prove the most profound influence on his own guitar playing, and through the music of another Minnesota legend, Bob Dylan, he further traced the roots of contemporary folk music back to America's prewar country and blues.

Lang's technical acumen, melodic

imagination, and profound grasp of the blues inevitably brought him to the attention of American Primitive icon Fahey, who in 1973 issued The Thing at the Nursery Room Window. A year later, Takoma also released a compilation featuring Fahey, Lang, and fellow fingerstyle virtuoso Leo Kottke. Lang issued his next LP, the Grammynominated Lycurgus, on the Flying Fish imprint in 1975, followed two years later by the Waterhouse release Back to the Wall. Fame and fortune eluded him, however, and upon returning from a six-week East Coast tour $600 in the hole, he agreed to give up performing in search of steady employment. Apart from co-authoring the 1982 book 20th Century Masters of Finger-Style Guitar with John Stropes, Lang spent close to two decades outside of the music industry, working in film and animation until 1999, when he began work on his 2001 comeback LP, Dharma Blues, released via his own Horus label. The follow-up, Guitar, hit retail in 2004.

Meet the Beneficiaries Guitars for Vets Guitars for Vets, Inc. (G4V) is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of ailing and injured military veterans by providing them with guitars and music instruction. Through self-expression and the healing power of music, it is their intent to restore the feelings of joy and purpose that can be lost after suffering trauma.

Knight has long been known as a stellar guitar player – he’s won several Minnesota Music Awards for “best guitarist” – and his playing has been likened to Richard Thompson, Patty Larkin, Bert Jansch and Brooks Williams. But his great songwriting also comes to the fore in his recent releases, and his songs reveals a gifted artist getting his second creative wind.

G4V’s primary focus is to use the healing power of music to help veterans. Whether we agree or disagree with the decision to go to war, one thing is for certain: there are men and women who bravely fight for and honorably represent our country. As a consequence of war, many of our soldiers come home with physical and emotional injuries. They need assistance.

Billy Hallquist After Thundertree, Billy Hallquist continued to perform solo and with groups like The K.O. Band, Cimmarron and Perfectly Loud. Currently, he is concert organizer and member of Salute to the Music of Bob Dylan. They perform annual concerts on behalf of Guitars for Vets. In addition, he plans to develop MN Legends into an ongoing series of events featuring iconic local acts of the '60s, '70s, '80s and beyond.

Guitars for Vets provides free private lessons and a new acoustic guitar to military veterans at VA medical and community-based Vet centers. All veterans are referred by the VA medical team in order to integrate the Guitars for Vets program into their treatment regimen. Upon graduation, each Vet is presented a guitar, gig bag, strap, tuner, method book and a certificate of completion.

Senior pictures are a great way to capture the personality of a student’s high school days. Selecting clothing and photo locations can be a challenge, especially when parents and the student don’t always agree. The most important thing to remember is the word compromise. Plan for multiple outfits and locations so that everyone will be happy – especially when looking through yearbooks 20 years down the road at a class reunion.

For this photography feature, we partnered with West End merchants to select and style high school-aged models to be shot in senior portrait style. Park Nicollet’s Melrose Institute’s treatment director, Heather Gallivan, PsyD, LP, explained why celebrity-inspired bodies aren’t practical and how body image affects the way we feel. She started out by explaining what the term body image is:

Body image is how you see yourself when you look in the mirror or when you picture yourself in your mind. Body image is not only how your feel about your appearance, but also how comfortable you feel in your body. Learning to recognize thoughts and feelings related to body image can help an individual work on building a more positive body image.

“Genetics play a large role in our body shape. The body type of the majority of fashion models is not realistic for most of society,” said Gallivan. “In addition, body shape is not what makes up the whole person. We need to look at a person for their whole being.

We are comprised of talents, relationships and our body.”

Gallivan said that the people closest to us see us more for our personality than our weight or shape – generous, funny, kind, a great listener. It is when we don’t know someone personally that we may be more prone to comparing bodies or being critical of someone’s appearance.

When Appearance is a Problem Generally, being critically aware of body image is something almost everyone pays attention to daily. But it can be a problem.

Knowing when a concern with appearance is a problem and treating that is Gallivan’s clinic specialty. Gallivan pointed out when the obsession becomes an issue.

rationalizes that their eating habits are OK. They may think: “No one is noticing.” By no one saying something to them, they think the status quo is OK.

“An indication of an eating disorder is when someone is extremely anxious about eating and overly concerned about body weight and shape, when they spend the majority of their day thinking of food, body, weight,” explained Gallivan.

Gallivan understands the challenge of approaching someone about an eating disorder. Typically, Midwesterners try not to offend someone. However, one of the best ways to help guide someone to seek out treatment is that they hear that others see a problem. She suggests using words that aren’t confrontational, such as “I’ve noticed that you are xyz lately.”

Sometimes this is self-evident and a patient is aware and wants to seek help. Oftentimes it is not. Gallivan says that the way an eating disorder works is that a person

better to seek help sooner than later.

Negative body image represents a distorted perception of our shape, explained Gallivan. Sometimes people convince themselves that only other people are attractive or they view their body shape as a sign of personal failure.

The challenge for most people is to find things we like about ourselves now, in the moment, says Gallivan.

The challenge is finding a clear, true perception of your body shape as it really is. She says we should celebrate and appreciate what our body can do for us. It allows us to run, dance, and do things we enjoy.

“When we look in a mirror, we look at what we don’t like about our appearance. We set ourselves up psychologically to pick ourselves apart,” Gallivan pointed out.

Shopping can be a difficult process if we don’t have a positive body image.

When shopping, Gallivan suggests using a friend as your “mirror.” She says that lighting in many stores isn’t flattering to our figure and we are often too critical of ourselves in a mirror. She also recommended that people pay attention to how clothes feel on you as that’s a good indication of whether or not you’ll be comfortable and confident in them or not.

Gallivan also suggests shopping when fresh and not stressed out, and limit the shopping time frame to a couple of hours. She explains that when people spend too much time shopping they can’t really focus and that adds to the stress of what makes someone feel good or not.

Melrose Institute’s “Be You” campaign has tips to help create a positive body image. It points out that we all may have days when we feel awkward or uncomfortable in our bodies, but the key to developing positive body image is to recognize and respect our natural shape, and learn to overpower those negative thoughts and feelings with positive, affirming and accepting ones. Building a more positive body image also means making an effort to treat your body right.

Check out these tips to get you started on the path to a better body image: Be balanced. Be good to your body by getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods and being physically active. Avoid smoking, drugs and other unhealthy behaviors.

Be positive. Focus on all the amazing things your body can do, not how it looks. Appreciate your ability to run, dance, play or create.

Be diverse. Recognize that people naturally come in different shapes and sizes – embrace what makes you unique.

Be stylish. Wear clothes that fit your body type and make you look and feel good – no matter what your size.

Be proud. Make a list of your positive qualities that aren’t related to your body or appearance. We are all so much more than what we look like on the outside.

Be inspired. Think about the people you admire. Have they impacted your life because of what they look like or because of what they’ve accomplished?

Be accepting. Challenge negative thoughts about your body. Try to be less judgmental and learn to talk more positively about yourself.

Be special. Take time to pamper yourself. Try a yoga class, get a massage or facial, or take a relaxing bubble bath – you deserve it!

Be savvy. Read books and magazines with positive messages that make you feel good about yourself.

Ditch anything that makes you feel inadequate.

Be kind. Avoid body-bashing in social settings. Instead, focus conversations on the positive traits of yourself and others.

In the end, you are the only one that can turn your image of yourself around. And it likely won’t happen overnight. Remember, patience is your friend.
