• Our May 7th “Celebrate Mom - Women’s Health & Wellness Fair” will raise funds for The Hartford & Re/Max Results Breast Cancer Ride. • On July 14th, our “Kids’ Health & Safety Night” will benefit the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery. • August 20th’s “West End Block Party” will raise money for music programs in local schools. • The Great Pumpkin Festival event scheduled for October 29th will raise funds for the food shelf at St. Louis Park Emergency Program (STEP). • And, at the end of the year, proceeds from our December 11th “One World, Many Cultures” event will support Sabes Jewish Community Center programming and other local charities.
Consider this your invitation to experience the many ways The Shops at West End can help make your LIFE exciting. Our retailers and restaurants are open and ready for you to discover – or rediscover. New to your neighborhood Sopranos - where everyone is part of the family Sopranos Italian Kitchen fuses the classic tastes of Italy with modern influences. Fresh pastas made to order with the finest ingredients, sizzling steaks grilled to perfection on a wood-fired grill and succulent meats slow-cooked on a wood fired rotisserie. Start your experience with the bountiful antipasti bar, then enjoy samplings of classic Italian dishes, as well as new creations from the mind of Executive Chef J.P. Samuelson. Sopranos’ tagline, “Where everyone is part of the family,” also rings true to at least one local family. St. Louis Park resident Ben Siegel and his family loved their Sopranos preview dinner so much, they went back for lunch a couple days later when it officially opened. Not only were they impressed with the food, they really enjoyed the presentation of the wine, “The wine comes out in wine barrels that are actually tapped at the table. It provides a greater experience than just a wine bottle being
brought to your table. It makes it more personal,” said Siegel. “The wine itself was amazing.” The new restaurant’s ambiance is a blend of Old and New World; a chic yet casual environment with rustic Roman influences. Sopranos is the perfect place for that special night out whether entertaining V.I.P. clients or enjoying a family celebration. Stop by the bar to nosh on delicious small plate offerings and sample the unique handcrafted cocktails. Be sure to check out the unique offerings from their 120+ bottle wine list, hand-selected by the restaurant’s awardwinning sommelier. In 1985, a single, small neighborhood boutique opened in Baltimore, Maryland. They called themselves The White House and offered unique, individual collections of fabulous clothing and accessories in shades of white and ivory. Expanding on their original theme, they opened Black Market in 1995. In 1997 they combined their boutiques into one unifed store, White House | Black Market. The store’s passion is to make women feel beautiful. Today they have over 300 boutiques, and in each one they’re dedicated to helping you feel that “every place you go is more beautiful…simply because you’re there.” White House | Black Market (Opening Spring 2011)

Meet our merchants “Meet our merchants” is a a regular feature of West End Compass that introduces you to owners and/or managers of stores and restaurants at The Shops at West End. Stop in and say hello to merchant managers – they’re available to help you personalize your shopping experience.
Meet Steve Clem
Meet Maryann Walker
Manager, Omaha Steaks
Manager, Creative Kidstuff
With an undergraduate degree in political science and a masters in journalism, Steve Clem certainly didn’t know his true passion would be running a store full of steaks, chicken, pork, seafood and some of the most delicious desserts in town.
Ever since she began working as a part-time employee for Creative Kidstuff in Minnetonka 11 years ago, West End store manager Maryann Walker has had a passion for teaching children and their families the value of play. “The toys at our store can bring out creativity, imagination, wonder, and so much more. Play is an important part of learning,” said Maryann.
Before moving to Minnesota in 1999, Steve lived in Iowa, where he worked in marketing and public relations. After moving to Minnesota and working for many years in that industry, Steve realized that he wanted a change. In 2009, Steve took a job with Omaha Steaks, where he went through extensive store manager training. Omaha Steaks takes pride in its staff and realizes that its employees are the key to its success; therefore, training is an essential part of the company’s goal to provide the best customer service possible. After his training, Steve became the manager at The Shops at West End’s Omaha Steaks store. When Steve was asked what he enjoys most about his job, he said, “The best part of my job is the customers. They are great! Foodwise, I love the Ultimate Mac and Cheese Lasagna and the Carmel Apple Tartlet.” Steve’s motto is a famous quote by Mark Twain, “Humor is mankind’s famous blessing,” and he tries to live by that each day. When not working at the store, Steve spends time with his two sons and watches them play sports throughout the year. He also is an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan. Find Steve at Omaha Steaks: 1627 Park Place Blvd.
DID YOU KNOW? - In 1898, J.J. Simon and his son, B.A., left Riga, Latvia on a ship heading for the United States and a new life. After passing through Ellis Island, they boarded a train going west and got off when the land looked like Riga farm country. It was Omaha, Nebraska, their new home. They began working in the only business they knew - the meat business. After employment in several Omaha markets, they founded their own company in 1917, which would become Omaha Steaks.
Perhaps Maryann’s store has become such a popular place for children and their parents to shop because of the equally strong passion for the value of play that all of her employees share. “My employees enjoy working here, because it’s a fun environment and we encourage them to be creative, “ she said. When you walk into Creative Kidstuff, you get to experience some of Maryann’s personal creativity. Along with utilizing the company’s corporate branding elements, Maryann gets to customize her store’s layout and create a unique, playful shopping experience for her guests. Maryann also instilled the value of play in her own children, who are now adults. “My daughter’s favorite toy growing up was a cash register, because not only did it provide her with something to do, it also taught her numbers and basic counting skills,” she said. Today, Creative Kidstuff sells a new and improved cash register that is a hit among younger children. Dan and Vera Marko started one of their most treasured family traditions 62 years ago when Dan proposed to Vera in 1949. He bought her engagement ring from family friend, neighbor, and second-generation jeweler, Glenn Bergstrom. Little did they know that Bergstrom Jewelers would be a part of their lives for many years to come! Submitted photo

From this day forward
After meeting at Holy Emmanuel Church in 1947, Dan knew that Vera was special – so special that he asked for her hand in marriage soon after their first meeting. “When I saw my ring, I had to say yes. It was absolutely beautiful!” Vera said. Since then, Dan has spoiled his blushing bride with diamonds, pearls and anything she has set her heart on. Of course, they were all purchased from their friends at the original downtown Minneapolis Bergstrom Jewelers store, and now at The Shops at West End.
Passing on much more than just traditions
From spending time with the family, you can tell the Marko grandparents’ love for their children and grandchildren is genuine. They want to experience as many special moments together with them as they can. That includes gifting their jewelery now so they can share the joy and surprise it brings. “I enjoy being able to pass down my jewelry to my granddaughters,” said Vera. Dan passed down his favorite ring to his son, Jeff, who since has never taken that ring off. Dan too loved that ring so much that he had
Bergstrom recreate it. And recreate they did! The new ring takes on many of the original’s characteristics while maintaining its own unique style. “This ring is very special to both of us; it meant so much to me when he gave me the ring for my 30th birthday,” said Jeff.

Following in Dad’s footsteps
Jeff also went with the family favorite when he bought his engagement ring for his wife, Margo, 35 years ago. Margo was thrilled that Dan and his family were so fond of Bergstrom Jewelers – her family used them too! “There was no question that he would be going to Bergstrom for my ring,” said Margo. Harold Bergstrom sold them their ring after teaching them everything they needed, and wanted, to know about diamonds. “He didn’t try to sell us on anything; he was enjoying the time together as much as we were,” Jeff said.
And babies make four
Not long after Jeff and Margo were married, Margo gave birth to two beautiful daughters, Lindsay, now 28, and Katlin, now 24. “Our parents and grandparents gave us so many treasured pieces of jewelry ever since we were little, and they all came from our favorite jeweler,” said Kaitlin. “When my then-fiancé Ken and I talked about marriage, I made it very clear that he could only go to Bergstrom Jewelers for my ring.” Ken just smiled and nodded his head while Kaitlin shared her story. The same thing happened when Lindsay’s husband, Jerimiah, asked her to marry him.
Bergstrom Jewelers is in its third generation of family ownership. Here Glenn Bergstrom’s daughter, co-owner Cindi Bergstrom Kranz, shows the Marko ladies some new ring options for Margo.
Why Bergstrom?
When asked why they family kept coming back to Bergstrom Jewelers, everyone in the Marko clan agrees it’s because of the customer service they receive from all the jeweler’s employees. “The high quality jewelry, customer service and customer loyalty are unmatched,” explained Dan.
Store co-owner Bob Zagaros has enjoyed working with the Marko family for many years. “I appreciate getting to know the family and learning each person’s personal tastes,” said Bob. The Markos have sent a lot of business to Bergstrom and say they will continue to do so. “We have complete trust in each other,” Dan said. “That is what makes us come back year after year!” Even though Bergstrom has moved from downtown Minneapolis to The Shops at West End, they remain just as busy if not busier. Their new store is much bigger, allowing for a wider selection of jewelry and more things for the Marko family to find and claim as their next family treasure!
Sometimes May showers bring more than spring flowers
Everyone knows that rain can ruin a wedding day. What everyone doesn’t know is that if you buy your engagement ring from Bergstrom Jewelers and it happens to rain on your big day, they will refund the cost of your engagement ring – up to $5,000! While it’s not what you want on your special day, wedding showers can at least bring you dollars at Bergstrom Jewelers. (See store for details.)

Fruity Frozen Yogurt Pops
1. Get kids curious by having them help you pick out fruit and vegetables. Show them how to choose ripe fruits and vegetables (and if you don’t know, just ask the produce people to show you). Have them guess where different fruits and vegetables might come from.
Yield: 6 pops Prep: 10 minutes, Freeze Time: 2 hours Ingredients: 3 (4 oz) containers Yoplait Kids Strawberry-Vanilla yogurt 1 cup seedless grapes, cut in half
2. Read food labels with your kids. This will help them be more aware of which foods are better for them than others.
Directions: 1. Empty yogurt into small mixing bowl. 2. Add grapes to yogurt and mix well.
4 healthy fruit and nut tips: 1 2
3. Spoon into 6 small (3 ounce) paper cups and insert a wooden stick into center of each cup.
If fresh produce isn’t available, canned, dried and frozen fruits and vegetables can be good options. Choose items without added sugar or syrups to avoid unecessary carbs.
4. Place on metal pan; freeze 2 hours or until hard. 5. Tear the paper cup; peel the sides off as you eat.

Try eating at least 2 different colored vegetables with every meal – top with olive oil rather than butter.

Rub firm-skin fruits and vegetables under running tap water or scrub with a clean vegetable brush while rinsing with running tap water. Or, go a step further by combining a tablespoon each of baking soda and lemon juice in a large bowl of water and use as scrub. This can remove wax coatings and any pesticides that might be on the skin.

Q and A West End Compass (weC) recently sat down with Lobby Lounge general manager, Janice Kalien. Here’s what she had to say… weC: Who is your typical customer?
Star Treatment Be a Movie V.I.P.
With unbelievably crisp surround sound and digital cinema projectors, a full service bar and restaurant, and excellent customer service, ShowPlace Icon Theatres offers viewers the best possible movie experience in the metro. Whether you are in the V.I.P. seating area or reserved seating (all seats are reserved), you will not want to see a movie anywhere else ever again. Oh, and their EXTRAS perks program is free and gets you discounted tickets, V.I.P. upgrades and food specials (see story at right). Be sure to visit www.showplaceicon.com for more information. You have three options when purchasing tickets. You can select and purchase your seats online, visit a ticket kiosk in the theatre complex lobby, or receive assistance from a ticket agent at the entrance of the theatre. Guests 21 and over can take advantage of the incredible V.I.P. seating area. With extra-wide, custom-designed seats, side tables for food and drinks, and access to the Lobby Lounge throughout the movie, you’ll be glad you spent the extra few dollars to be seated here. The Lobby Lounge offers a full service bar and dinner menu. This swanky bar is a great place to catch up with friends, talk about the movie you just saw, or get out of the house for dinner. Be sure to try the bacon popcorn (shown below) – it’s the most popular item on the menu.
JK: We see a lot of couples and groups of all ages – from all areas of Minnesota. Some even live right next to other theatres but come to visit us! weC: What have you heard from people about this theatre? JK: That it’s the single best theatre they’ve ever been to. From the cleanliness – to the ticket seller greeting you with a smile and a hello – to the posh Lounge our guests can enjoy. weC: Do you have any special rates, offers or programs that your customers can take advantage of? JK:
Absolutely! Guests can sign up to enjoy the benefits of our free EXTRAS perks program at www.showplaceicon.com. Members can pick up their card from our box office. They can then receive emails about promotions such as $6 member movies (any day, anytime), FREE VIP upgrades Monday through Thursday, $5 Matinee combos featuring a small popcorn and soda, free refills on all sizes of popcorn, soda and ICEEs, and any Lounge features for movies/holidays.
weC: What is your customer service approach? JK:
To appeal to all who enjoy movies with amazing deals and unparalled service. Being able to use our V.I.P. lounge and theatre seating as well as training our staff to go above and beyond for any guest sets us apart from any other theatre.
weC: Are private theater rentals available? JK:
Yes. We have had celebrities and groups rent out our theatres. This can usually be arranged by Matt Gamble at mgamble@kerasotes.com. For events in the Lounge they can contact me, Janice Kalien, at jkalien@kerasotes.com.
Did you know? You don’t have to be seeing a movie to enjoy a drink or food in the Lobby Lounge. Simply enter at the main theatre entrance and tell the ticket attendant you are going to the Lobby Lounge – proceed up the stairs to the right. Enjoy.
Restaurant’s bacon popcorn gets national exposure! Lobby Lounge’s bacon flavored popcorn was featured in the April 2011 issue of Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine. How cool is that?! Have you tried it? Image copyright “Every Day with Rachael Ray”
