{ WHAT’S NEW Punch Bowl Social brings eatertainment to The Shops at West End

Dining in Minneapolis is about to get a lot more interesting. This fall, award-winning Punch Bowl Social will open its doors in The Shops at West End, introducing the region to an exciting new dining experience. Imagine 23,000 square feet devoted to scratch kitchen menu items, artfully crafted beverages – including those eponymous punch bowls – and a thoughtfully curated collection of your favorite old-school games like darts, pinball, Skee-Ball and vintage video games like Centipede, Ms. Pac Man and Donkey Kong. Singled out by Nation’s Restaurant News as a Top Breakout Brand in 2015, Punch Bowl Social has quickly become a local’s favorite for great food, drink and entertainment – a combination emerging in the restaurant industry, also known as “eatertainment.”

Punch Bowl Social’s gastro-diner menu satisfies both the everyman and the elevated palate. Popular dishes include street tacos, sharable cauliflower nachos (though so good you may not want to share), cast iron burgers and a chicken and waffles dish sure to rival any you’ve previously enjoyed. Daily Blue and Green Plate specials often reflect seasonal events such as Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day, and always provide at least one vegetarian choice. Highly innovative, the beverage program offers old- and new-school cocktails, allnatural sodas and fizzes, floats and shakes (kid-friendly and grown up versions available), fresh squeezed juices and breakfast drinks – try the cilantro gin fizz for a smooth wake-up call. And those punches? They’re as enjoyable to look at – served in vintage glass bowls and

adorned with fresh fruit – as they are fun to share. Start with the popular “You must bring us... A Shrubbery,” a delightful drink blending Skyy Moscato vodka, watermelon shrub, lemon juice and cardamom syrup with a red wine float. Rounding out the eatertainment experience are eight bowling lanes, two bocce ball courts and three private karaoke rooms – all of which are housed in a beautifully designed, eclectic space melding mountain lodge, Victorian and modern industrial design themes. Like everything at Punch Bowl Social, the unrivaled environment comes together beautifully, creating a new and welcoming experience for all. See for yourself this fall. Elise Teardrop Dangle Earrings, $14, Charming Charlie

By Sasha Westin, chief image advisor at Fabuliss Spring and summer retailers feature (and recycle) a mix of casual and cool trends that you can use to augment your wardrobe staples, refresh your style or overhaul your wardrobe. The most notable revolves around the Pantone colors of the year: Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue. Rose Quartz – a.k.a. pastel pink – comes in the form of rose gold accents and accessories plus every clothing item available in the color. Serenity – a pastel blue that coordinates with Quartz – will be available in everything from accessories to apparel and beyond. These soft colors will look best on blondes and people with pink skin tones or paler blue eyes. Those with medium or darker hair and eyes and warmer skin tones should proceed with caution when it comes to wearing these colors around the face.

Another upcoming trend, which is making a repeat appearance, is a modest take on ’70s style. The modest aspect comes from covering up last year’s bare midriffs and instead baring the alluring shoulder, something most women tend to be more comfortable showing off. My favorite ’70s reference is the fringe detail. This season it is evolving into a more tailored tassel on accessories and apparel. Just remember – a little fringe and tassel goes a long way and can be managed by ensuring the size and amount of fringe or tassel works with your proportions. Even more ’70s can be seen in the Bohemian flower prints and embellishments, which range from feminine interpretations to bold and graphic styles. While it’s traditionally a casual

Marcella Top, $32, Kittsona

West End Compass | theshopsatwestend.com

look, a Bohemian print on silk can be appropriate for work or special occasions. The other key throwbacks are rainbowcolored accessories and laces. A shoe or handbag in all colors of the rainbow pairs easily with denim and neutral colors and can quickly take an outfit from classic to trendy. Sandals with laces are available in every color and heel height, and the lace look can also be found on blouses and tops. Just make sure laces aren’t strained or tight, which can be unflattering. One surprising trend after so many years of heels getting taller and platforms getting thicker is the flat heel. Whether it’s a white canvas sneaker or a lace-up ballet, you can give your feet a break with classic and colorful styles.

Sneakers are being paired with dressier outfits and ballet flats can be used to dress up casual or add to a dressedup look.

Take Away Maxi Dress, $68, Evereve

Menswear tends to be more classic as far as ready-to-wear. That said, expect to have your pick of leather jackets with fantastic details from color to embellishments. The other item you’ll likely notice more of are tailored shirts with modern details. And please be careful when considering the pinstripe suit trend. A good pinstripe suit is timeless, while a bad pinstripe suit can scream dated and look like a costume.

Laser Cut Coin Purse, $12, Charming Charlie

As you shop and evaluate items, trendy or more timeless, ask yourself the following and be honest with the answers to ensure long-term satisfaction with any and every investment: • Is this something that will work with pieces I already have? • Will I get sufficient use out of it? • Does this item fit and flatter? • Do I feel great in this? Sasha Westin is chief image advisor at Fabuliss – How Confident Leaders Get Dressed. Sasha offers wardrobe and color consultations, shopping, makeovers and public speaking.

colors in season

PANTONE® Fashion Color Report Spring 2016: A Transporting and Transformative Canvas Influenced by the world of art, new global doors opening and the desire to disconnect from technology and unwind, designers this season have gravitated toward a palette that is first and foremost calming. Paying homage to the beauty of natural resources, colors emerging in the Spring collections serve as vehicles that transport wearers to more tranquil, mindful environs which encourage relaxation first, followed by curiosity and exploration.

border top of mind, designers are playing with courageous color statements that aren’t afraid to be vibrant but at the same time are combined with quieting, classic and more natural tones. “Colors this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “With our culture still surrounded by so much uncertainty, we are continuing to yearn for those softer shades that offer a sense of calm and relaxation.”

A Unisex Palette Colors this season transcend cultural and gender norms. Vivid brights give way to excitement and optimism, though quiet stability prevails in this season’s palette. For Spring 2016 there are truly no perceivable distinctions in color choices between the men’s and women’s collections, both of which focus on a desire to breathe and reflect, then play. Mott Necklace, $28, Kittsona

Designers were also inspired by the contrast of urban design and lush vegetation, leading to unexpected color combinations and collections reminiscent of architecture, travel and nostalgia. By creating looks that truly represent the world we live in, both constructed and organic, designers sought to awaken a sense of reflection, followed by playful escapism. Artists, many of whom are known for bold color usage and strong shapes and lines, played an influential role in this season’s styles – from Matisse, Picasso and Frank Stella to Esther Stewart and Sam Falls. With Cuba and other destinations south of the 12

The soothing, calming nature of colors in the Spring collections are led by Rose Quartz, a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Like a serene sunset, flushed cheek or budding flower, Rose Quartz reminds us to reflect on our surroundings during the busy but lighthearted spring and summer months. The fashion and design communities, and consequently, consumers, have been in love with orange for several seasons. Coming to the fore this Spring is Peach Echo, a shade that emanates friendlier qualities, evoking warmth and accessibility. It is an all-encompassing, tempered companion in the playful orange family.

Weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, Serenity comforts with a calming effect, bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times. A transcendent blue, Serenity provides us with a naturally connected sense of space. A maritime-inspired blue, Snorkel Blue plays in the navy family, but with a happier, more energetic context. The name alone implies a relaxing vacation and encourages escape. It is striking yet still, with lots of activity bursting from its undertones. While the majority of the Spring/ Summer palette trends toward calmness, a few diversions from the theme emerge that offer a contrast. With Buttercup designers reveal a shining beacon transporting its wearer to a happier, sunnier place.

Lorelei Braided Wedges, $29, Charming Charlie

A shade of aqua that leans toward the green family, Limpet Shell is clear, clean and defined. Suggestive of clarity and freshness, its crisp and modern influences evoke a deliberate, mindful tranquility.

Fringe Vest $34; Primp

As in most any season, the need for neutrals arises. Essentially a basic, the subtlety of the lilac undertone in Lilac Gray adds a distinctive edge to this classic gray shade. The high energy Fiesta is a harbinger of excitement, encouraging free-spirited exploration to unknown but welcoming locales. A strong and fiery, yellow-based red, the vivid Fiesta provides a stark contrast to the calming, softer nature of this season’s palette. A transitional color that will take us through the seasons, Iced Coffee manifests as another strong neutral for the season. With its natural earthy quality, the softness and

subtlety of Iced Coffee creates a stable foundation when combined with the rest of this season’s palette. Green Flash calls on its wearer to explore, push the envelope and escape the mundane, radiating an openness that combines with the rest of the palette in unexpected but serendipitous ways. The popularity of this brilliant hue is representative of nature’s persistent influence even in urban environments, a trend continuing to inspire designers. Pantone is the world-renowned authority on color and provider of color systems and leading technology for the selection and accurate communication of color across a variety of industries. The 2016 festival lineup at the Shops at West End area promises fun, revelry, good food and drink, and top-notch entertainment. Combine the West End’s central location, free parking, nearby shops, restaurants and hotels, and you’re in for some festival fun! MAY 21 2016 City Pages Beer Festival Celebrating its first year at the West End, the City Pages Beer Festival will be held May 21 outdoors on Gamble Drive and in the adjacent Parkdale Center parking lots. “We picked West End due to its great location, free parking options and accessible nightlife,” says event producer Steve Madson.

The event, which is the longest-running beer festival in Minnesota and features about 50 breweries with each offering 4-6 beers for sampling, will include live music from Free and Easy, a local R & B/funk group that takes on current hits. But don’t miss more traditional beer event entertainment, such as Bill Koncar roaming the event with his accordion and the popular Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band.

The festival mixes wine tastings with food vendors and a farmer’s market feel because the people who are sampling the wines are from the wineries, not wine reps from a distribution company. “The person pouring your wine could very well be someone who helped make the wine you’re tasting,” said festival organizer Aaron Berdofe. OCT. 19-29 Twin Cities Film Festival Twin Cities Film Festival (TCFF) has hosted its festival at the Showplace ICON Theatres at the West End for four years. “The ICON Theatres offers our audiences a level of comfort and elegance that no other theaters in the Twin Cities can,” said Jatin Setia, executive director of TCFF, which attracts nearly 10,000 visitors over its 11-day festival. “The ICON Theatres are part of the total experience with top-of-the-line projection and a central location.”

This year’s festival, slated for Oct. 19-29, features more than 120 narrative and documentary films and premieres across a number of themes and genres, such as GLBTQ films, Women in Film, Horror/ Midnight series, and Minnesota-connected films. And new in 2016, the festival has a lineup of familyfriendly films. The festival’s Changemaker Series, which has been part of TCFF since its first year, emphasizes socially relevant issues. “We think it’s extremely important for our organization to use the film media platform to activate our community around social justice issues,” said Setia. “Film is a powerful medium to activate change and it’s our obligation to our community to do what we can to ignite conversation.” twincitiesfilmfest.org

From falling into acting, to creating his popular documentary series “My Last Days,” to meeting Zach Sobiech, a 17-year-old who would change his life, to now directing the major motion picture about Sobiech’s life, “Fly a Little Higher.” “It all goes back to my faith,” says Baldoni, a lifelong follower of the Bahá’í Faith. “For me, work needs to be a form of service to humanity.” And for Baldoni, his work is to tell stories that connect humanity. “I think my work and my particular gifts have to do with storytelling and hopefully inspiring people to connect with themselves and the world around them in a deeper way,” he said.

Baldoni always wanted to create, but he “fell into” acting at the age of 20. Brokenhearted and lacking confidence while sleeping on his dad’s couch, he was approached by an acting manager. Within a few months, he began landing small roles on such popular TV shows as “Charmed,” “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” and made-for-TV movies.

“Death has always been both fascinating and frightening to me, and I’ve always been intrigued by people who are dying,” he said. “For as long as I can remember, when I found out someone was sick or dying, my impulse was to be close to them.” In 2012, Baldoni was looking for a story to finish out the first season of “My Last Days.” He has spent nearly a year making six short documentaries but felt there was one last story to be told. Enter Zach Sobiech, a budding musician from Minnesota diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

Sick with the flu for the first time in years while visiting his nowwife Emily’s family in Milan, Baldoni came across a story about Sobiech and “Clouds,” his now hit song written as a goodbye to family and friends. “I instantly knew that this was why I was sick,” said Baldoni, who used

the power of social media to get Sobiech’s attention. Having read that Sobiech was a fan of “The Office,” Baldoni asked his friend Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute on the hit NBC comedy for nine seasons, to Tweet Sobiech. It worked, and within a day Baldoni had a Skype call scheduled with Sobiech’s mother Laura. Prior to Baldoni reaching out to Laura, the Sobiech family had decided that they did not want to glorify Zach and his situation, but rather to spread awareness of pediatric cancer and raise money for research, said Laura. “She knew this story was bigger than Zach,” said Baldoni. He gained Laura’s trust by sending her a previous episode of “My Last Days” about another teenager with osteosarcoma. “I was so impressed with how beautifully he told the story,” said Laura. “That helped me trust him to tell Zach’s story.”

But his real knack was for emotional storytelling. “I felt like there was more I could be doing for the world, and while acting was fun, at the time it wasn’t fulfilling me. I think I was stuck and not really appreciating life,” he said. After nearly eight years, Baldoni officially put acting on hold to pursue his pet project, “My Last Days,” a documentary series about life told by people with terminal illnesses. Less than a month later, Baldoni and his crew of eight were in Minnesota spending five days with the Sobiech family. That week changed Baldoni’s and the family’s life forever. “You have the great bounty of immersing yourself into this family and in some ways kind of become like an unlicensed therapist,” he said. “It’s an intense emotional bonding experience to assume the role of telling someone’s legacy. When a family is dealing with something as heartbreaking and tragic as death, sometimes a stranger with a camera is exactly what you need to open up and express things you haven’t been able to articulate.” “Justin came in with an open mind and no agenda about what he would capture,” said Laura. “Dying is really awkward. There’s so much to say, but never the right time to say it.” Zach Sobiech and Baldoni became fast friends and would quickly move from teasing each other to tearing up. “He was an incredible guy,” Baldoni says of Sobiech, who he credits with nudging him to propose to his wife. “I was thinking about proposing when I was filming with Zach. He told me how grateful he was to have had the chance to experience love,” Baldoni said. “This 17-year-old schooled me in love in a way that no one ever had.” Baldoni proposed a few months later by making a movie for Emily. He quickly finished it and was able to send it to Zach before he passed away. “He was really sick at that point and we didn’t know how long he had…but Laura told me when he watched our proposal he was laughing and smiling through the whole thing and that meant the world to me.”

20

West End Compass | theshopsatwestend.com

In addition to the proposal video, Zach Sobiech was able to watch his own “My Last Days” episode before his death in May 2013, nearly three months after filming. “He was so happy,” said Baldoni. “I think for him, getting a chance to see his story, and knowing he would live on through this film was so important.” Zach Sobiech wasn’t the only one to see the documentary. It went viral and now has more than 14 million views on YouTube. “This documentary broke every rule we know about content on the internet,” said Baldoni of the 22-minute piece that was the first and only to ever crash Upworthy’s site. “For some reason, people really connected with Zach, his message, and his spirit,” said Laura. “I hear everyday from people about how Zach has changed their lives in very big ways. That’s been really healing for us.” Another viral sensation: Sobiech’s song, “Clouds.” While filming “My Last Days,” Baldoni worked every connection he had to create a video of celebrities lip-syncing to the song. The result is a compilation of everyone from Jason Mraz to Sarah Silverman to Bryan Cranston singing along to “Clouds,” which hit No. 1 on iTunes.

Since telling Zach’s story, Baldoni has filmed a second season of “My Last Days” and has a major network deal for the series he will be announcing soon. “Through the experience of ‘My Last Days,’ I realized that the world needs more stories about the good in the

world.” Enter Baldoni’s production company, Wayfarer, which creates television commercials, works with non-profits, shoots documentaries, and is creating its own platform for important stories like Zach’s. In addition to his company Baldoni also uses his personal platform to share stories about his life, as well, including a 4-minute “love letter” to his newborn daughter titled “Dear Maiya.” “Our goal is to become a next generation TV studio that focuses on content that simply makes the world better.” And one big reason Baldoni can make the world better is that he now has a strong platform, thanks for a starring role in the Golden Globe-nominated series, “Jane the Virgin.” Baldoni plays Rafael, the title character’s “baby daddy.” “This show has been such a massive blessing in our lives, and helped create the platform that is making the second season of ‘My Last Days’ possible,” he said. “The other benefit to all of this is that if I have something I care deeply about, there are a few more (thousand) people who are open to listening.”

“All of the pieces seemed to fall into place at exactly the right time,” Baldoni says of his directorial debut “Fly a Little Higher.” The movie, based on the book of the same name by Laura Sobiech, was picked up by Warner Bros. Studios in early 2016. Baldoni urges, “the story is not about how Zach became famous.” Instead, The movie centers around Zach, his family, and his relationships, especially with both his girlfriend

Justin Baldoni often finds his day taking shape as it happens. From a morning visit to the gym to business meetings to heading to the set of “Jane the Virgin,” he needs to be ready for it all. “I find I need to be able to transform at any moment into anything,” he said. Comfort and layers are key to Baldoni’s ability to transform. “LA is a very casual place and it’s always 70 degrees,” says the West Coast native. Tailoring is essential, too. “Clothes were meant to fit our bodies,” he said. And always one to want to help others, many of his clothes end up being given to the less fortunate. “The clothes I have that I don’t wear are quickly given to the homeless,” he said.

Amy and his writing partner Sammy. “Zach was this unique person who was surrounded by a loving family and unique teenagers who made the best of the situation,” said Baldoni. “Justin’s intrigued by the sacrificial love these teenagers had,” said Laura, who wrote the book in the months following Zach’s death. “I wanted to write the book because in ‘My Last Days,’ we look perfect. But our family is messy too and I wanted to share that too. Cancer does horrible things to a family, and we dealt with all of that,” she said. But getting the picture in Baldoni’s hands wasn’t an easy feat. The book publishers were skeptical because he had never directed a major motion picture and once he became tied to the project, it was sold to a studio that eventually went bankrupt (but not before being saved by Baldoni and his producing partner Casey La Scala). “I really wanted to make this film, but I also had to detach and let this all unfold in the way that would be best serve Zach’s story.”

“Justin follows through and does amazing things,” said Laura. “He has an open heart and really lives what he believes in.”

Now that Warner Bros. has picked up the film and Baldoni’s at the helm, the script is in revisions and he continues to stay in touch with Laura. “We share quirky Zach stuff and really feel like Zach is guiding the process,” said Laura. “Wherever this ends up, I know it’ll be OK and Justin will maintain the integrity of the story.” Baldoni also wants to honor Zach by shooting the film in Minnesota. “I was so blown away by the people in Minnesota,” said Baldoni, recalling his week-long visit while shooting “My Last Days.” Baldoni says Zach’s story wouldn’t have been possible without the community, who provided free food and hotels for the low-budget project. “The people of Minnesota really rallied around us and wanted to help us,” he said. “Zach was able to bring so many people together and would want this to be shot in Minnesota.” “Justin follows through and does amazing things,” said Laura. “He has an open heart and really lives what he believes in.”

• Every year, 400 children and teens are diagnosed with osteosarcoma. • When osteosarcoma spreads to the lungs, the long-term survival rate is only about 30 percent. • Osteosarcoma is the most common form of bone cancer in dogs—about 8,000 dogs are diagnosed each year. • Dogs with osteosarcoma help researchers understand the genetic make-up of the disease, and this information can be used to develop new treatment options for humans. • Recent discoveries suggest osteosarcoma has been around since the age of dinosaurs. Zach Sobiech inspired millions with his hit song “Clouds,” and today, his legacy flourishes through the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund with Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Topping $1 million last year, Zach’s fund is helping researchers make significant progress in understanding and treating osteosarcoma, a devastating bone cancer. Currently, four research projects are underway in the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota, bringing together a diverse team across many areas of science including epidemiology, genomics, molecular biology and veterinary medicine. The research team’s goals are to identify the causes of osteosarcoma and develop effective, well-tolerated treatments. Scientists are already making great strides in identifying potential new drugs to bring to clinical trials and why certain cases of osteosarcoma are more aggressive than others. Bling

The engagement ring is the first step in symbolizing the joining of two people, so it has to be perfect. Current trends see couples moving away from traditional solitaires and white diamonds. Bergstrom Jewelers and Wedding Day Diamonds have seen an increase in halo rings, mixtures of yellow, white, and rose gold, as well as pear, oval, and emerald cut diamonds. And because of the goal of a unique and memorable ring, more and more couples come into the jewelry store together to start shopping. RING CAM For a unique proposal, Bergstrom offers a “Ring Cam,” a jewelry box that has a lens and microphone that allows you to capture the exact moment your partner says yes.

Gear

When it comes to wedding gear for guys, Jos. A. Bank has seen recent trends moving away from traditional tuxedos to gray and navy suits, allowing the wearer to keep the suit for future endeavors. ECO 3 LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS Grow your diamond. Wedding Day Diamonds offers lab-grown ECO 3 diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as earth-mined diamonds. The same skilled cutters that facet earth-mined stones also cut lab-grown diamonds. The only difference is where they come from. ECO 3 diamonds are conflict-free, environmentally friendly and sustainable.

TAILORED SUITS Many grooms go for tailored suits, which are created to fit, instead of frame, the body. Jos. A. Bank offers three different suit fits: Traditional Fit; Tailored Fit suits, which feature trimmer jackets through the sides and sleeves and a pant that sits lower on the waist and is narrower through the seat and thigh; and Slim Fit suits, which are cut even slimmer than the tailored suits have a much narrower lapel and the gorge (buttonholes on the front of the coat) is higher.

CUSTOM DESIGN For a custom design, both Bergstrom and Wedding Day offer in-house custom designs using CAD technology.

HOW RING CAM WORKS 1. SELECT YOUR PACKAGE Proposals are often so nerve-wracking and surprising that no one remembers what was said. Choose from a variety of packages to turn your moment into a keepsake.

CHOOSING A BAND Once you have the engagement ring, a wedding band follows shortly after. At Wedding Day Diamonds, every one of the engagement rings has a matching band. Or, if you’re looking for a match for an heirloom or custom-created ring, bands can easily be custom created. bergstromjewelers.com; weddingdaydiamonds.com

2. START RECORDING After reviewing the instructions and practicing, capture the “behind the scenes” planning leading to the big moment. 3. SAVE AND EDIT YOUR VIDEO Once you have proposed, make sure to save the video and edit it into something great, or have Ring Cam edit it for you!

Vanilla Coconut Protein Iced Coffee

Tiki Cacti Necktie Punch Bowl

Tiki Cacti Necktie Punch Bowl

Vanilla Coconut Protein Iced Coffee

Recipe by: Punch Bowl Social

Recipe By: Nutrishop • Mixologist: Cody Haislet

INGREDIENTS (PUNCH BOWL): • 2 parts grapefruit syrup* • 1 part blood orange juice • 1 part lemon juice • 2 parts Clement Creole Shrub • 6 parts Don Q Cristal Rum • 12 parts San Pellegrino Prickly Pear • 1 dash Angostura bitters • 1 dash nutmeg • Garnish with lime wheels

SINGLE SERVING: • 1 ⁄2 oz grapefruit syrup* • 1 ⁄4 oz lemon juice • 1 ⁄4 oz blood orange juice • 1 ⁄2 oz Clement Creole Shrub • 1 1 ⁄2 oz Don Q Cristal Rum • 1 dash of Angostura bitters • 3 oz San Pellegrino Prickly Pear • Dash of nutmeg • Garnish with a lime wheel

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: • 1 cup coarsely ground coffee beans (Not all coffee will make a great cold brew; ask your local coffee shop for recommendations. We like La Minita Peaberry from Caribou.) • 4 cups cold water • French press • Protein shaker • VP7 vanilla protein powder • 6 oz. coconut almond milk • Cinnamon HOW TO MAKE: Coffee – mix ground coffee and cold water in French press. Stir briefly to combine. Cover and refrigerate for at least 12 hours (or up to 24 hours).

HOW TO MAKE: Shake the first 6 ingredients (except for San Pellegrino and nutmeg) and strain into glass. Add ice and top with Pellegrino, lightly stir. Garnish with lime wheel and dash nutmeg.

Protein vanilla-coconut creamer – Right before you are ready to serve the coffee, you will mix the creamer. Put one scoop of vanilla protein powder in a shaker, pour in coconut almond milk, add a dash of cinnamon and shake until well blended.

*To make the grapefruit syrup, quarter 2 fresh grapefruits and squeeze juice into a medium bowl. Place fruit, juice and 2 cups sugar in the bowl and stir. Keep refrigerated for 3-4 days, stirring every day. When the syrup tastes like the peel and fruit, it’s ready. Strain the contents of the bowl and if the syrup is very thick, add 2 tablespoons of water, one at a time and stir, be careful not to over-dilute the syrup.

Serve – Pour the cold coffee over ice into a separate glass or mug, stirring in the protein creamer to dilute the coffee at a 1:3 or 1:2 coffee to creamer ratio. Refrigerate the remaining coffee concentrate in a sealed container for up to one week.
