Not your typical five-year-old.
My, how time fl ies. The Shops at West End celebrates five years this fall. What a journey it’s been! During our growth, the center has come alive with unique restaurant concepts, one-of-a-kind clothing and accessory boutiques, and other outstanding specialty retailers. The ShowPlace ICON Theatre continues to see record-setting attendance. Plus, we’ve also hosted a variety of events and concerts throughout the year and will continue to do so.
The Shops at West End celebrates its fifth birthday this fall. What a journey it’s been!
Best of all, our growth hasn’t stopped. In spring we announced the arrival of Latitude 360 - set to open in early 2015. The entertainment complex is unlike anything you’ve likely seen, offering live comedy and music, a 1618 lane bowling alley, an arcade, multiple bars and a restaurant. On the construction front, Bonefish Grill is quickly coming along on its site between CRAVE and Jos. A. Bank. Bonefish is an American casual dining restaurant that features a delicious menu of both surf and turf wood-grilled items. We’re pleased to welcome them to our mix. Th is fall, if you’re a fan of fashion, art and the cinema, be sure to save the dates for three major fall events at The Shops at West End: the MN4MN Fashion Weekend is Sept. 19-21; Our Town: Art + Nature Art Crawl is Oct. 10-11; and Twin Cities Film Fest returns Oct. 16-25. We’re also planning some great things for the holidays again this year. Th is issue of Compass is full of great stories on fashion, fitness and food. We were excited to have Minnesota native Marisa Coughlan grace the cover. Coughlan co-stars in the upcoming movie Space Station 76 along with Matt Bomer, Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson. Unlike the character in the movie, Coughlan is one of the most down-to-earth people we’ve met. We hope you enjoy the issue. Thank you for continuing to make The Shops at West End a popular shopping, entertainment and dining area! We have the best customers in the area – kudos to you. Here’s to our fi rst five years and many more to come!

MINNESOTANS STICK TOGETHER. This philosophy—or stereotype, depending on your point-of-view—has dictated much of Marisa Coughlan’s life. The Twin Cities-born-and-raised actress left Minnesota at age 18 to pursue acting and now, as she enters her fourth decade, her home state is calling her back. Minnesota Girl “This is the best place,” Coughlan says of her home state. “I just love it here and get back as often as I can.” The petite blonde, best known for her roles in the cult classic Super Troopers and Pumpkin, moved out to Hollywood at 18 and quickly rose through the ranks in the late ’90s and early 2000s—being ranked on Maxim’s Hot List and being named “one to watch” in the Young Hollywood Awards. Since then she’s starred in a number of movies and television shows, including Lifetime’s Side Order of Life and her upcoming space drama (yes, you read that right), Space Station 76. Raised in St. Paul and educated at Breck, Coughlan experienced the best of the Twin Cities growing up, often attending the Children’s Theatre and becoming a regular on Lake of the Isles. “They’re comforting to me,” she says of the Twin Cities landmarks. “This is home to me.” So when it came time to settle down, it’s no shock that Coughlan gravitated toward another born-and-bred Minnesotan: Stephen Wallack, a fellow Minnesotan living in Los Angeles working “in the business” at an agency. Wallack was a source of comfort too. As one of six children, Coughlan was best friends with one of Wallack’s sisters. “I’ve always considered Stephen’s family my family,” she said. “In the end, I was just really drawn to the comfort and familiarity that Stephen provided. He’s the kind of guy I understand.” So the two, who had known each other most of their lives, reconnected about six years ago, quickly got married and began a family. “One of the least wonderful things about LA is dating in LA,” Coughlan says with a laugh. “I was beyond ready to have a family. My priorities were already changed. There wasn’t a lot of adjusting to do. I was ready to be a present mom.”

Within a year of getting married, Coughlan and Wallack welcomed their son Finn, who was shortly followed by daughters Merritt and Ireland. Splitting time between Minnesota and Los Angeles often, the two eldest children attend preschools in both locations. “It’s important that they have friends in both places,” Coughlan said. “When you’re raised here, it’s hard to raise your kids anywhere else,” she says of Minnesota, where the majority of her and her husband’s family lives. “It’s a great place to raise a family and I want my kids to grow up here.”
Out of this world Coughlan’s latest flick promises heart, angst, comedy and an outthere setting: a space station set in the 1970s. In Space Station 76, she plays a pill-popping, self-loathing mother and wife to Matt Bomer (best known for USA’s White Collar). “I feel very trapped and isolated,” Coughlan says of her character, Misty. But the movie, which had a quiet debut this past spring in the film fest circuit and is tentatively set for national release late fall, portrays human frailty through the lens of a vacant housewife. The film, also starring Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson, deals with issues that are relevant today: repressed homosexuality, post-war stress and feminism. And then there’s a character with a robot hand. “It definitely has comedic and, just, zany moments,” said Coughlan. “But the movie has so much heart and deals with issues that anyone can relate to.”

“It definitely has comedic and, just, zany moments. But the movie has so much hear and deals with issues that anyone can relate to.” – Marisa Coughlan The film was born out of a one-act play and director Jack Plotnick adapted it into a feature film, drawing from his own childhood in 1970s suburban America. “Knowing that Jack was drawing upon things he experienced—and things many people experience— like feelings of isolation and desperation made the film so real,” said Coughlan. “I felt like I hit the jackpot,” Coughlan said of Space Station 76, which previewed at SXSW and quickly became one of the festival’s most buzzed about movies. “All of the characters have certain breakthroughs and change and evolve. It’s a really funny, but thought-provoking look at humanity,” she said. “Any actor would sign up to be a part of that.” And any movie set in the 1970s promises an interesting look. “The fashion was phenomenal,” said Coughlan, who admits she tried to keep a few pieces from the film. But not all were fun to wear—tight jumpsuits and onesies make for an uncomfortable day. “I was on a tight diet trying to squeeze into those outfits,” she says with a laugh. Coughlan’s style in her offtime is a bit more simplistic, favoring fitted, clean looks and steering away from
patterns. “I go with my gut so much more than when I was younger,” she says, recalling moments where stylists would try to talk her into looks. “I’m no longer swayed by my look, I know what works and what doesn’t on my body.”
Taking Control And Coughlan has taken control of more than just her look. After more than 20 years in the business, she has a clearer idea of what she wants: and that’s creative control. Recently Coughlan has taken on writing in addition to acting. “It’s really rewarding,” said Coughlan, who admits that sometimes as an actor you feel like a “cog in someone else’s wheel.” Craving more creative input on set—and wanting to spend more time with her three young children— Coughlan turned to writing and has since developed a handful of television shows and is working to produce a feature film, hopefully to be filmed in Minnesota. In 2011, she developed her first show for ABC. Lost and Found is about a kid from Minnesota who goes to New York to find his mom who gave him up for adoption and finds she’s not the person he was expecting. “It’s emotional and deals with feelings everyone can relate to: abandonment, disappointment and family.” She’s currently in development with ABC on another show that she plans to write and perform in. “As a writer in TV, you really have the reigns,” she said. For Coughlan, the writing has created the perfect outlet and speaks for gained theshopsatwestend.com | West End Compass

confidence in the business. “When I look back, I just didn’t have the guts to go for it when I was younger,” she says of writing. “I listened to that doubt more than I should have and assumed that everyone would think I wasn’t good enough.”
“Minnesota is the best community. I miss it here. Living in Minnesota more would really be ideal, because, well, this place is ideal.”
But now that doubt has waned and Coughlan says she considers herself just as much of a writer as an actor and hopes to bring her newfound love of writing and producing to Minnesota. “I really want to be more involved in the artistic community and shoot something here,” she says of Minneapolis. Ten years ago, a dream like this would seem much too daunting: everything took place in Los Angeles. But now, filming is done around the country, and meetings and decisions can happen digitally. This gives Coughlan hope that splitting her time between Los Angeles and Minnesota could be possible. She’s even talked with her sister-in-law Melisa Wallack (Oscar-nominated writer of 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club) about starting a production company in Minnesota. “We both really want to find a way to be in both places,” Coughlan says of Los Angeles and Minnesota.
– Marisa Coughlan
“This town has so much to offer creatively and I didn’t really take advantage of that when I was growing up,” said Coughlan, who left Minnesota at 18 to attend the theater program as University of Southern California. “I wasn’t here long, and I regret that. I saw LA in my sights, but the business has evolved so much.” Evolution is a good word to describe Coughlan. From a Minnesota teen to a young Hollywood stand-out to an established actress, and now writer and mother, it’s clear that Coughlan is comfortable in her own skin—and knows what she wants. “I’ve had a phenomenally great experience in Hollywood, but now I’m ready to take on the next step: interesting projects, more writing and focusing on my kids.” And hopefully incorporating some more time in the Twin Cities. “Minnesota is the best community,” she said. “I miss it here. Living in Minnesota more would really be ideal, because, well, this place is ideal.”

Apricot Lane Boutique likes to source locally designed products. Minnesota products include jewelry by Larissa Loden, clothing from Laura Hlavac, and headbands and scarves by Urban Halo.
Larissa Loden Larissa Loden designs for women who aren’t afraid to express themselves. They are strong and fearless, interested in history and love to dress up. She is inspired by stories behind the pieces and those wearing them, and feeds off seeing her jewelry complete a look. Vintage meets modern in Larissa’s eco-friendly collection. Most components used are deadstock, which means they were made to be sold long ago but missed their chance. Traveling across the United States and Europe, Larissa explores the depths of flea markets and deadstock warehouses to find cameos, switchblades and lockets. She gives these vintage treasures a new opportunity to shine by transforming them into modern, edgy jewelry. Whether on the hunt for unique objects or hammering them into hot bracelets, it’s all about the process. Once Larissa and her loot have safely returned to the Twin Cities, she doesn’t go far to start creating new designs. Larissa’s studio and home are one and the same, no factory involved. Using methods including drilling and soldering, stamping and hammering, her collection is fervently handmade.
Laura Hlavac Laura Hlavac holds a bachelor of science degree in fashion design from the University of Minnesota. She has owned a successful apparel design and manufacturing company for 26 years designing, developing, and manufacturing a wide variety of apparel and consumer products for corporate clients.

The pair created the casual chic line in 2013 as a way to offer basics that could be dressed up or down all the while still priced reasonably. Rouched knit dresses, loosely draped tops and long maxi dresses are just a few garments that encapsulate the collection—all of which retail for under $50 and are manufactured in the United States. When it comes to toys, Minnesota businesses know how to play in the big leagues.
MINQ carries two amazing jewelry lines by Minnesota designers Helen Wang and SBG Designs.
Jax, Ltd Jax, Ltd is built on a foundation of fun which goes back to the Minnesota company’s predecessor, Lakeside Toys— which produced numerous megahits including Gumby and Pokey and Barrel of Monkeys.
Starting in 1980, JAX set out to develop an extensive line of family games which would be both entertaining and educational—with the game Sequence at its core. Sequence is now a family favorite and has many successful off-shoots including Sequence: Letters, Numbers, States & Capitals, and Sequence Kids. The latest additions to the Sequence franchise include Sequence Dogs and Sequence Cats which feature “aww”-inspiring photography and interesting facts about each breed of dog or cat shown. In addition to games, Jax brought a new toy line to market in 2012 called SkaZooms. SkaZooms are fast, fun “dudes” that move like magic across any hard surface, with or without their boards! There is a full line of accessories to keep the fun extreme.
SkaZooms Minneapolis-based Jax Ltd has a great line of creative, finger animated skateboarding characters called SkaZooms™. Characters are each individually named to match their design and personality – names like Grungy, Sarge, Bot and Strawbs. SkaZooms magically glide across smooth surfaces, including complimenting skateboard park accessories.

Helen Wang Helen Wang started playing with vintage jewelry as a child, and soon began creating her own pieces. Th rough she has strayed from jewelry-making from time to time, she’s never been able to turn away from her creative instincts for long. Having grown up in New York City and lived for years in Miami, Helen has definite cosmopolitan influences, but combines these with simpler, earthier fundamentals, which are reflected in her choice to spend her adult life in rural Montana and northern Minnesota. Helen’s influences and passion for beauty are apparent in her stunning collection of earrings and colliers. SBG Designs Sara Beth Goldfine, creator of SBG Designs, attracts jewelry connoisseurs from around the world with her extraordinary line of timeless adornments. As a little girl, Sara loved to play dress up and would spend hours sifting through her two older sisters’ and mother’s closets to curate the perfect looks. Sara would secretly take apart her mother’s jewelry and study the mechanics of design. Mesmerized by the concept of turning raw materials into wearable art, Sara held on to her childhood interest and studied both textile and jewelry design at the University of Kansas. SBG Designs’ collections are inspired by the constant desire to create something different. A leader in fashion jewelry, SBG Designs is worn by celebrities and is featured in fashion publications such as InStyle, Redbook, Life & Style, InTouch Weekly, and Modern Bride. – MINQ, (952) 217-4933
MINNESOTA Brews
Many of Figlio and Yard House’s tap beers hail from Minnesota. They carry brews from both large and small breweries, including: Lucid (Minnetonka), Summit (St. Paul), Finnegans (Minneapolis), Surly (St. Louis Park, MN), 612Brew (Minneapolis), Lift Bridge (Stillwater, MN), Fulton (Minneapolis), Bad Weather Brewing (Minnetonka – at Yard House) and Brau Brothers (Lucan, MN – at Figlio). Figlio also has their own specially created amber ale made in New Ulm, MN.
FIGLIO Brau Brothers Small. Extremely small. Each batch Brau Brothers brews nets only about two hundred cases. Because of this, it takes many batches of Brau Brothers’ Beer to satisfy Minnesota’s beer drinkers. The brewery hums seven days a week. Their tiny footprint means every square foot must be used efficiently.
Build Your Family Naturally
Ten fermenters guard the brew house, with a modest 15-barrel brewing system as the centerpiece. Six converted, copper finishing tanks create a wall that separates brew house from bottling line.

Bad Weather Brewing Style guidelines are not their thing. You won’t find a beer list that reads: Bad Weather Kolsch, Bad Weather Stout, Bad Weather Brown. They are building their brewery on the excitement of seasonal offerings while featuring one year-round beer. Th is gives them the opportunity to play with interesting seasonal beer concepts that will evolve right alongside the seasons of Minnesota. Bad Weather Brewing wants to be untethered with beer choices. Like most bad weather, the beers will be unexpected. And you will love them. Bad Weather Brewing operates under an alternating proprietorship with Lucid Brewing Company and Badger Hill Brewing Company in Minnetonka, MN. The three companies brew on the same brewhouse equipment then oversee our individual beers through fermentation and packaging. Beer is their passion, their obsession. Bad Weather Brewing is in charge of the beer from the kettle to your glass. Th is unique situation fosters an atmosphere of cooperation, camaraderie and creativity that you don’t find in every craft beer scene.

OU ARE ONLY A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFETIME. For some that’s a good thing, for others, it can be the best days of their lives. Senior pictures are a great way to capture the personality of a student’s high school days. Selecting clothing and photo locations can be a challenge, especially when parents and the student don’t always agree. The most important thing to remember is the word compromise. Plan for multiple outfits and locations so that everyone will be happy—especially when looking through yearbooks 20 years down the road at a class reunion. For this photography feature, we partnered with West End merchants to select and style high school-aged models to be shot in senior portrait style. Apricot Lane Boutique, Francesca’s, MINQ, Primp and White House | Black Market worked with our models to select clothing that was both age-appropriate and fit their individual personalities. Hair and makeup was done by Blast Blow Dry Bar, phresh salon spa and Roosters Men’s Grooming Center.

TIPS FROM A PRO
Part of the fun of senior pictures is in seizing the opportunity to express yourself. Here are some tips from photographer Jesse Valley to maximize your session.
1
Pick a variety of outfits (three completely different outfits are better than six similar outfits). Layering can create multiple looks with fewer outfits.
2
Choose one classic look for a timeless portrait (your mom will love this). This might include picking a solid color that complements your eyes.
3
Do something trendy or funky – the point is to have fun and capture your personality.
4
Have your hair and makeup professionally done at a salon. This is probably the best kept secret for great portraits.
5
Many poses require sitting or lying down, so dresses that are too short should be avoided.
6
Accessorize – this is where you give outfits your personal touch and flair.
7
Make sure the clothes are a good fit. Clothes that are too big (or too small) will make you look larger.

Top 10 Fall Women’s Colors Whether it was a particular decade or a trip to a special place, designers are fascinated with the beauty of the past and the spirit of the present—recreating it with color, fabric and style this fall season. Design and color were inspired by everything from books, artisan crafts, photography and retro architecture, to exotic landscapes and the children of rock legends. The diverse color palette takes us on an adventure spanning 100 years—a season roused by various vantage points from past and present. “This is a season of untypical colors— more reflective of the imagination and ingenuity, which makes for an artful collection of colors and combinations not bound by the usual hues for fall,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "There is a feminine mystique that is reflected throughout the palette, inspired by the increasing need for women everywhere to create an individual imprint." Sangria, an exotic red that evokes a sense of glamorous adventures and faraway destinations, is enhanced by Aurora Red, a more sophisticated shade that adds verve and spark. Analili available
The grown-up at MINQ reds are followed by two extremes of the purple family that intrigue the eye and inspire the imagination. Mauve Mist, a romantic and elegant purple shade, reminds us of the deco era and stimulates a sense of femininity and empowerment, while Radiant Orchid,
Bella Luxx available at MINQ
a captivating and adaptable shade, enchants the complete spectrum. Pair either with Cypress, a majestic and powerful green; indicative of its name, this shade has a towering presence and serves as a stunning perennial. With its slightly green undertone, Bright Cobalt offers a subtle twist on the traditional cobalt blue, which unifies this season’s blues. Likewise, Royal Blue, which is both evocative and dignified, provides more complexity and excitement than the average navy, while still remaining versatile. Pair Bright Cobalt with Sangria and Cypress, or Royal Blue with Mauve Mist and Aluminum, a futuristic stainless steel shade that serves as a complex neutral. Similar to Sangria, Cognac’s name alone leads to glamorous illusions. This classy and cultured brown takes a typical autumnal color to a sumptuous realm, making the shade unexpectedly ideal for evening wear. Adding a ray of sunlight and warmth, optimistic Misted Yellow alludes to the promise of spring to come. Both Cognac and Misted Yellow will also be prevalent in prints—a surprisingly popular trend this fall season. Discover more fall colors and designs at pantone.com.
