My, how time fl ies. The Shops at West End celebrates five years this fall.

What a journey it’s been!

During our growth, the center has come alive with unique restaurant concepts, one-of-a-kind clothing and accessory boutiques, and other outstanding specialty retailers. The ShowPlace ICON Theatre continues to see record-setting attendance. Plus, we’ve also hosted a variety of events and concerts throughout the year and will continue to do so.

The Shops at West End celebrates its fifth birthday this fall. What a journey it’s been!

Best of all, our growth hasn’t stopped. In spring we announced the arrival of Latitude 360 - set to open in early 2015. The entertainment complex is unlike anything you’ve likely seen, offering live comedy and music, a 1618 lane bowling alley, an arcade, multiple bars and a restaurant.

On the construction front, Bonefish Grill is quickly coming along on its site between CRAVE and Jos. A. Bank. Bonefish is an American casual dining restaurant that features a delicious menu of both surf and turf wood-grilled items. We’re pleased to welcome them to our mix.

Th is fall, if you’re a fan of fashion, art and the cinema, be sure to save the dates for three major fall events at The Shops at West End: the MN4MN Fashion Weekend is Sept. 19-21; Our Town: Art + Nature Art Crawl is Oct. 10-11; and Twin Cities Film Fest returns Oct. 16-25. We’re also planning some great things for the holidays again this year.

Th is issue of Compass is full of great stories on fashion, fitness and food.

We were excited to have Minnesota native Marisa Coughlan grace the cover. Coughlan co-stars in the upcoming movie Space Station 76 along with Matt Bomer, Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson. Unlike the character in the movie, Coughlan is one of the most down-to-earth people we’ve met.

Latitude 360 will accentuate eclectic tenant mix at The Shops at West End In spring, the exciting news broke about a new entertainment complex coming to The Shops at West End in 2015. Latitude 360 has signed on to anchor the center’s south end cap.

Latitude 360 is a mega complex that will offer plenty of entertainment options for Shops at West End goers. The venue will include a casual and contemporary restaurant, multiple bars, a cutting-edge comedy club, an 18-lane bowling alley, a high-tech arcade, an al fresco patio, and live music on weekends. It also offers space for corporate events during the week.

The owners of Latitude 360 were attracted to The Shops at West End for the varied tenant mix and prime location. “The West End is a perfect fit for us,” said CEO and founder Brent Brown. “There are so many great brands already there, and the surrounding area is filled with exciting residential and commercial developments of all kinds.”

A raffle raised money for Second Stork, an organization that helps new parents in need.

MINNESOTANS STICK TOGETHER. This philosophy—or stereotype, depending on your point-of-view—has dictated much of Marisa Coughlan’s life. The Twin Cities-born-and-raised actress left Minnesota at age 18 to pursue acting and now, as she enters her fourth decade, her home state is calling her back.

Minnesota Girl “This is the best place,” Coughlan says of her home state. “I just love it here and get back as often as I can.” The petite blonde, best known for her roles in the cult classic Super Troopers and Pumpkin, moved out to Hollywood at 18 and quickly rose through the ranks in the late ’90s and early 2000s—being ranked on Maxim’s Hot List and being named “one to watch” in the Young Hollywood Awards.

Since then she’s starred in a number of movies and television shows, including Lifetime’s Side Order of Life and her upcoming space drama (yes, you read that right), Space Station 76.

Raised in St. Paul and educated at Breck, Coughlan experienced the best of the Twin Cities growing up, often attending the Children’s Theatre and becoming a regular on Lake of the Isles. “They’re comforting to me,” she says of the Twin Cities landmarks. “This is home to me.”

So when it came time to settle down, it’s no shock that Coughlan gravitated toward another born-and-bred Minnesotan: Stephen Wallack, a fellow Minnesotan living in Los Angeles working “in the business” at an agency. Wallack was a source of comfort too. As one of six children, Coughlan was best friends with one of Wallack’s sisters. “I’ve always considered Stephen’s family my family,” she said.

“In the end, I was just really drawn to the comfort and familiarity that Stephen provided. He’s the kind of guy I understand.”

So the two, who had known each other most of their lives, reconnected about six years ago, quickly got married and began a family. “One of the least wonderful things about LA is dating in LA,” Coughlan says with a laugh. “I was beyond ready to have a family. My priorities were already changed. There wasn’t a lot of adjusting to do. I was ready to be a present mom.”

Within a year of getting married, Coughlan and Wallack welcomed their son Finn, who was shortly followed by daughters Merritt and Ireland. Splitting time between Minnesota and Los Angeles often, the two eldest children attend preschools in both locations. “It’s important that they have friends in both places,” Coughlan said.

“When you’re raised here, it’s hard to raise your kids anywhere else,” she says of Minnesota, where the majority of her and her husband’s family lives. “It’s a great place to raise a family and I want my kids to grow up here.”

Out of this world Coughlan’s latest flick promises heart, angst, comedy and an outthere setting: a space station set in the 1970s. In Space Station 76, she plays a pill-popping, self-loathing mother and wife to Matt Bomer (best known for USA’s White Collar). “I feel very trapped and isolated,” Coughlan says of her character, Misty.

But the movie, which had a quiet debut this past spring in the film fest circuit and is tentatively set for national release late fall, portrays human frailty through the lens of a vacant housewife.

The film, also starring Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson, deals with issues that are relevant today: repressed homosexuality, post-war stress and feminism. And then there’s a character with a robot hand. “It definitely has comedic and, just, zany moments,” said Coughlan. “But the movie has so much heart and deals with issues that anyone can relate to.”

– Marisa Coughlan The film was born out of a one-act play and director Jack Plotnick adapted it into a feature film, drawing from his own childhood in 1970s suburban America.

“Knowing that Jack was drawing upon things he experienced—and things many people experience— like feelings of isolation and desperation made the film so real,” said Coughlan.

“I felt like I hit the jackpot,” Coughlan said of Space Station 76, which previewed at SXSW and quickly became one of the festival’s most buzzed about movies. “All of the characters have certain breakthroughs and change and evolve. It’s a really funny, but thought-provoking look at humanity,” she said. “Any actor would sign up to be a part of that.”

And any movie set in the 1970s promises an interesting look. “The fashion was phenomenal,” said Coughlan, who admits she tried to keep a few pieces from the film. But not all were fun to wear—tight jumpsuits and onesies make for an uncomfortable day. “I was on a tight diet trying to squeeze into those outfits,” she says with a laugh.

Coughlan’s style in her offtime is a bit more simplistic, favoring fitted, clean looks and steering away from

patterns. “I go with my gut so much more than when I was younger,” she says, recalling moments where stylists would try to talk her into looks. “I’m no longer swayed by my look, I know what works and what doesn’t on my body.”

Taking Control And Coughlan has taken control of more than just her look. After more than 20 years in the business, she has a clearer idea of what she wants: and that’s creative control.

Recently Coughlan has taken on writing in addition to acting. “It’s really rewarding,” said Coughlan, who admits that sometimes as an actor you feel like a “cog in someone else’s wheel.” Craving more creative input on set—and wanting to spend more time with her three young children— Coughlan turned to writing and has since developed a handful of television shows and is working to produce a feature film, hopefully to be filmed in Minnesota.

In 2011, she developed her first show for ABC. Lost and Found is about a kid from Minnesota who goes to New York to find his mom who gave him up for adoption and finds she’s not the person he was expecting.

“It’s emotional and deals with feelings everyone can relate to: abandonment, disappointment and family.” She’s currently in development with ABC on another show that she plans to write and perform in. “As a writer in TV, you really have the reigns,” she said.

confidence in the business. “When I look back, I just didn’t have the guts to go for it when I was younger,” she says of writing. “I listened to that doubt more than I should have and assumed that everyone would think I wasn’t good enough.”

But now that doubt has waned and Coughlan says she considers herself just as much of a writer as an actor and hopes to bring her newfound love of writing and producing to Minnesota. “I really want to be more involved in the artistic community and shoot something here,” she says of Minneapolis.

Ten years ago, a dream like this would seem much too daunting: everything took place in Los Angeles. But now, filming is done around the country, and meetings and decisions can happen digitally. This gives Coughlan hope that splitting her time between Los Angeles and Minnesota could be possible. She’s even talked with her sister-in-law Melisa Wallack (Oscar-nominated writer of 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club) about starting a production company in Minnesota. “We both really want to find a way to be in both places,” Coughlan says of Los Angeles and Minnesota.

“This town has so much to offer creatively and I didn’t really take advantage of that when I was growing up,” said Coughlan, who left Minnesota at 18 to attend the theater program as University of Southern California. “I wasn’t here long, and I regret that. I saw LA in my sights, but the business has evolved so much.”

Evolution is a good word to describe Coughlan.

From a Minnesota teen to a young Hollywood stand-out to an established actress, and now writer and mother, it’s clear that Coughlan is comfortable in her own skin—and knows what she wants. “I’ve had a phenomenally great experience in Hollywood, but now I’m ready to take on the next step: interesting projects, more writing and focusing on my kids.” And hopefully incorporating some more time in the Twin Cities. “Minnesota is the best community,” she said. “I miss it here.

Part of the fun of senior pictures is in seizing the opportunity to express yourself. Here are some tips from photographer Jesse Valley to maximize your session.

Pick a variety of outfits (three completely different outfits are better than six similar outfits). Layering can create multiple looks with fewer outfits.

Choose one classic look for a timeless portrait (your mom will love this). This might include picking a solid color that complements your eyes.

Do something trendy or funky – the point is to have fun and capture your personality.

Have your hair and makeup professionally done at a salon.

This is probably the best kept secret for great portraits.

Many poses require sitting or lying down, so dresses that are too short should be avoided.

Accessorize – this is where you give outfits your personal touch and flair.

Top 10 Fall Women’s Colors Whether it was a particular decade or a trip to a special place, designers are fascinated with the beauty of the past and the spirit of the present—recreating it with color, fabric and style this fall season.

TWIN CITIES FILM FEST CELEBRATES 5TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2014 Have you ever been to a film festival?

If you’ve always wanted to walk the red carpet, meet the filmmakers, be the first to experience never-before-seen films from across the country or shake hands with your favorite celebrities, then mark your calendar for the Twin Cities Film Fest this October as the organization celebrates its fifth anniversary.

The festival will unfold, as always, at The Shops at West End and the ShowPlace ICON Theatres from Oct. 16-25.
