Executive Director’s Report I spent the morning with U of M Mortuary Science students in Michael Mathews class, along with representatives from ICCFA, NFDA (Tim Hoff), CANA (Kevin Waterston), and Selected Independent Funeral Homes (Mark Cuddy). The purpose of the meeting was to share the value of professional associations. As l listened to the speakers ahead of me I started wondering, what can I add to the conversation? I agreed with everything that was said…education, networking, creating strong relationships and sharing information with people from around the country, increased professionalism, etc. Then it dawned on me that my position as paid staff of an association was different from the other speakers. A very important

role of the volunteer member is to help set the vision, mission and direction of an organization. My role as the Executive Director is to determine how we fulfill the above and get things done. Somehow the analogy of a bus came to mind and I wasn’t certain why, but here goes! Envision a bus (nice bus) filled with people who have a shared vision and know where they want to go. There is a LOT of discussion among the riders on that bus, and many different opinions on how to get from Point A to Point Z. Arguments ensue, tempers flare, fights break out, but someone finally becomes the mediator and a plan is agreed upon. Whew, glad that is over!

I failed to mention that after all the chaos listed above, there are people who get off the bus in a huff and want their money back. There are also people who refuse to get on the because there is apparently a bus fare and they argue, it’s just not worth it. These individuals decide to run alongside the bus and hope they get to the destination on their own volition. Sadly, they fall behind because they don’t have access or resources to the route. Next! Who is going to drive this bus and make sure we realize the vision, mission and goals of the organization? Here is a thought! Let’s have our Executive Director drive this bus! This individual is a licensed and experienced driver who can take direction but will also make appropriate suggestions when she can see the bridge ahead is out. Re-route! The staff can certainly take care of maintenance, tires are round and filled with air, engine oil is maintained, gas tank is filled. What could go wrong? We’ve got what it takes to get to the end of this line. As I drove back to the office I wondered, where did this bus analogy come from?? Google is great! It was the author James C. Collins and his book “Good to Great: Why some companies make the leap and others don’t.” He discusses the importance of having the right people on the bus with a shared vision and I recommend it highly for any business. So, thank you for agreeing to ride the MFDA bus. As staff, we promise to get to you to where you want to go. We appreciate your direction! Darlyne Erickson MFDA Executive Director

“The good-to-great leaders never wanted to become larger-than-life heroes. They never aspired to be put on a pedestal or become unreachable icons. They were seemingly ordinary people quietly producing extraordinary results.” - James C. Collins, Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Others Don’t

Hello Spring! By Ashley Czaplewski, MFDA President

Hello Spring! Hopefully this decent weather sticks around for good this time. I’m ready to be outside. It’s been a bit of a quiet month or two as we begin to gear up for convention. Plans are all falling into place with some added Body Prep CEU’s available on Monday afternoon, which I know will be a great bonus to many of us. NFDA’s Crematory Operator Certification will also be available on Monday and I hope many of you can attend this very beneficial training. I look forward to seeing you all at the Doubletree in Bloomington, May 21-23, it is sure to be a great time. You should have all received the Workforce Survey via email. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. The response has been overwhelming. The committee will go over all the results and determine where we should go

from here. Our plan is to have a time at convention to present the findings to you, our members, and then begin to find ways to move forward in the direction the survey leads us. We realize this is a difficult issue and there is no one size fits all solution, but if we use the results of the survey, it is our hope to find solutions that work. If you have other thoughts regarding the workforce issue that you feel weren’t addressed on the survey, I encourage you to email myself and I will share with the rest of the committee. My email is: Ashley@hofffuneral.com. The NFDA Advocacy Summit in Washington D.C. is quickly approaching, April 25-27. We have several board members, along with Darlyne that are planning to attend. This is a great experience to make a difference on issues surrounding funeral service.

We continue to receive strong support from legislators and stakeholders on the Crematory Operating Training Certification proposal. Policy makers have an interest in seeing the bill become law in order to clarify the training that needs to be completed by unlicensed individuals performing cremations. We will continue to work hard on this. See you all at convention! Regards,

Ashley Ashley Czaplewski 2017-2018 MFDA President

SPRING 2018 Legislative Update By Joe Sellwood, Cook Girard Associates

The 2018 legislative session is in full swing, with many important issues taking shape during the fast-paced spring timeline. This is typically a bonding year for state infrastructure and that is on the agenda for the final weeks of session, along with work on legislation for conformity of Minnesota’s tax law with the recently passed federal tax reform. This is very complex and promises to be controversial as legislators and the Administration work through this issue. The Funeral Directors Association, in conjunction with the Minnesota Department of Health and other stakeholders, continues our work to craft new policy updating statute with Minnesota’s rising cremation rates. Current law has required since 1997, that “proper training” needs to be provided by the licensed crematory for unlicensed

individual performing cremations, though there is no definition of proper training. Senate File 1665 (Weber, R-Luverne) and House File 1025 (Kiel, R-Crookston) update 149A.95, Subd. 3, to clarify that training for unlicensed individuals requires a cremator operator certification program approved by the Commissioner of Health. Additionally, with Minnesota’s cremation rates rising to over 60% in 2017, the bill has included the option of adding training on cremation practice to the body preparation, care and handling requirements (3 CE Hours) which are part of funeral director/mortician ongoing educational requirements. MFDA has worked with numerous stakeholders, including the Mortuary Science Ad Hoc Committee over the last two years on various proposals related to this issue. There has always been

broad support from the group to clarify the training required for unlicensed individuals – and throughout the process, no opposition was raised. Surprisingly, some Ad Hoc members who made no mention of their concerns came to the legislature with opposition to the bill. Unfortunately their inaccurate information created confusion on what current law permits regarding unlicensed individuals performing cremations. MFDA’s strong relationships at the legislature have resulted in continued support for the legislation. The 2018 legislative session ends on May 21st and there will be many changes over the coming weeks. Cook Girard Associates will keep MFDA informed of any and all legislation impacting the funeral service profession.

Book Review: The Toronto Book of the Dead by Adam Bunch By Terri Schlichenmeyer, The Bookworm Sez, LLC

Be careful where you tread; you don’t want to disturb anything important beneath the soil. Watch your feet; be mindful of where you put them. As you’ll see in The Toronto Book of the Dead by Adam Bunch, you’re not the first to walk on hallowed grounds. In the Victorian Age, “Garden cemeteries were all the rage….” As cities grew crowded and open areas were dear, green spaces around tombstones and monuments became places for picnics and gatherings, and

Brown Wilbert

cemeteries were “as much parks as they were boneyards.” This odd fact fascinated Adam Bunch and so, in 2010, he founded the Toronto Dreams Project, which uniquely explores the city’s past. Part of the project is based on where history lays buried. In 1956, for instance, the building of a new subdivision in Scarborough was abruptly halted when the bones of five hundred people were discovered, having lain in the ground some 600 years. They were Wendats (later known as the Huron people) whose burial practices, which occurred every “ten to thirty years,” included a festival and visitors from surrounding communities who brought their dead along, too. Elizabeth Simcoe, the young wife of Upper Canada’s first lieutenant governor, left a life of luxury and comfort to move to the wilderness in 1793. Though it had to be a culture shock, she seemed content with the challenge, bringing gentility to the growing city. But, says Bunch, it was a “dangerous time” then, so it’s no surprise that Elizabeth journaled one specific nightmare of death and violence.

Inc.

As it turned out, however, the nightmare was prophetic… Once upon a time, a man was executed in Toronto for forging a three-shilling note – just under a dollar, in today’s cash. Because of a cholera epidemic in the early 1800s, some six thousand victims of the disease lie in the ground under St. James Park. And Reformer Robert Baldwin left instructions that his corpse be defiled upon his death; today, his coffin is “chained to the bones of the woman he loved.” Sometimes gruesome, sometimes eerie, “The Toronto Book of the Dead” is also highly fascinating and very informative.

What makes it so is that author Adam Bunch treats death and tragedy with respect, but also with the feel of an insider’s travelogue. Here is where ancient bones were found. There is where Canada’s first hanging happened. Toppy Topham almost died here, here, and here. Over there, a beloved literary figure perished from an “apparent suicide.” The site references lend immediacy to these stories, which range from Toronto’s beginnings to tales that are quite recent, in lengths from a few pages to near-novella size. That, of course, makes them perfect for day-trips, macabre outings, or just for browsing on what’s left of a long winter’s night. You don’t have to live in Toronto to enjoy what’s inside “The Toronto Book of the Dead.” You can sit right in your own chair, miles away, and dig in. Just know that what you’re reading is true, every step of the way.

“Embalming and Reconstructive Surgery Tips and Techniques for the Professional Embalmer” PRESENTER: VERNIE FOUNTAIN Sponsored by: Metro First Call Part 1 - 2 CEUs Body Prep Part 2 – 2 CEUs Body Prep In this two-part information packed seminar Fountain will show the participants actual cases and use them to discuss various tips and in-depth techniques to manage various conditions of the case. The goal will be focused on teaching the participants how to perform specialized embalming and restorative techniques. Fountain is a strong advocate of the value to the family and friends of open casket viewing and lengthy visitation periods prior to final disposition of the body. He will identify many techniques will help embalmers accomplish preparation in such a way to allow for open casket viewing for some of the most severe trauma cases. He will discuss a myriad of tips and techniques throughout the entire seminar. Internationally known speaker, Vernie Fountain, CFSP, is a licensed embalmer and began his career in funeral service in 1965. In 1990 he founded Fountain National Academy (FNA) to provide quality, specialized training for licensed embalmers. Fountain’s embalming and reconstructive techniques help embalmers deal with severely traumatized and difficult cases and have proven effective in converting many non-viewable cases to a more acceptable viewable condition. His ability to teach his valuable expertise in seminar settings has made his presentations popular among funeral service professionals around the globe. For several years Vernie served as Chief Death Investigator and Forensic Autopsy Assistant for the Boone County, Missouri Medical Examiners’ Office, which gave him experience in forensic death investigation. Currently, in addition to operating Fountain National Academy, Vernie is called upon by attorneys to serve as expert witness in embalming-related civil lawsuits. He also works as a licensed private investigator in Missouri. In the spring of 2007 the Missouri Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association presented him with the Robert Knell award. The award is the highest and most esteemed award that can be granted by that association. Throughout Fountain’s career he has focused on creating better methods to repair trauma. In recent years he teamed up with Dean Jones to create the PMRC “Vernie R. Fountain” Signature series of restorative products. Fountain considers the PMRC products to be “A Better Way”. In 2010 and every other year since Fountain continues to produce and host Fountain National Academy’s biennial “International Embalming & Reconstructive Surgery Conference for Professional Embalmers”. The conference is held in Springfield, Missouri and attracts professional embalmers from across the USA and as well as internationally. In 2010 Fountain also created a Scholarship program for professional embalmers to assist them with furthering their education.

“The Intangible It Factor of Change Management” PRESENTER: JACK STAHLMANN Sponsored by: Brown-Wilbert 1 CEU General

In Los Angeles, Jack Stahlmann was an actor, producer, director and… of course, a waiter. In this presentation, he will examine how being nimble helped him in Hollywood and how that philosophy can make you a superstar in your field. Jack will analyze the evolution of great actors and make relevant, realworld business analogies that will help advance your career. During the hour, you will: • Be able to identify where to begin your change journey by embracing the “just one thing” philosophy. • Develop a mindset to no longer fear change by focusing on the end result first. • Discover how being nimble can help you channel your inner Clooney by revealing the simple steps of having the “it” factor. In 2002, Jack launched his own production company which created several films that enjoyed international success. The Fifteen Minute Show, an extremely low-budget feature film that was produced for less than $1,000, was the darling of the 2003 New York International Film and Video Festival. In 2004, he launched his most successful project, The Lift, which was featured in five film festivals worldwide. Freelancing in the directorial ranks, he was instrumental in creating the Margaret Cho stand-up show, Cho Revolution, working as the Second Assistant Director. As an actor, his shining moment came in a co-star role on the CBS drama Cold Case, where he played a wimpy park ranger. He also appeared on Days of Our Lives and several regional commercials. Jack is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and currently resides in St. Paul, Minnesota.

10 Things to Look for When Selecting a Preneed Insurance Company By Todd Carlson

In today’s increasingly complex and unpredictable market, it is more important than ever to seek out relationships with stable, reputable, and service-oriented organizations. Before selecting a preneed insurance provider in particular, there are several factors to consider. These are indicators of the company’s ability to weather market trends, remain committed to the interests and needs of the funeral industry, and provide the valuable tools needed to build a firm’s business and market share. 1. High A.M. Best Rating. An A.M. Best rating of A- “Excellent” or better is an absolute must. A.M. Best ratings reflect the opinion of an independent, third-party organization on the insurer’s ability to meet policyholder obligations. Nothing is more important than an insurance company’s ability to honor its promises. Unrated companies should be viewed with a suspicious eye. 2. Adequate Capital and Surplus to Total Assets Ratio. The ratio of Capital and Surplus to Total Assets is a key indicator of the financial health of an insurance company. You should look for a ratio that falls in between 8% and 10%. A low ratio can indicate a lack of Capital and too high of a ratio could indicate a company that is not growing its premium income. 3. Conservative Investment Mix. Look for a company that has a high percentage of bonds in their investment portfolio. A minimum of 80% bonds is recommended. Also, look for companies who hold 100% investment grade bonds. Investment grade bonds are referred to as Class 1 and Class 2 bonds. Class 3 and below are considered non-investment grade bonds which are commonly called “Junk” bonds. Class 6 bonds are in default. 4. Total Assets. In general, larger companies have proven their ability to succeed in the marketplace. Look for companies who have at least $1 billion in assets.

18 MFDA Bulletin • SPRING 2018

5. Asset, Premium, and Capital and Surplus Growth. Financially healthy insurance companies time after time show growth in these key areas. The level of growth in these areas should be tightly correlated with each other and consistent over time. However, a company that is growing too fast may have its capital stretched too thin. Again, consistent growth over long periods of time is critical. 6. Commitment to the Funeral Industry. Choose a company that has shown over the course of time to be a champion of the funeral industry and that has shown itself to be a proven funeral industry partner. 7. Customer Service Department Sensitive to the Needs of the Senior Market. Companies who focus on preneed and the senior market are better equipped to deal with the challenges that result from a large “golden years” clientele. For example, look for a company who answers their phones with real people who really care. This results in families who feel that they are being listened to and understood. 8. Company Representation. The funeral service environment is more complicated than ever. Many funeral providers are looking for an insurance carrier who can help them navigate through these turbulent waters. Look for a company who has well-trained, knowledgeable, and accessible representatives who can help you grow your business and improve your bottom line. 9. Product. When considering products, it’s helpful to visualize the five elements of product design as a pie. The slices of the pie are growth, commissions, premiums, valueadded services, and company profit. Look for a company that provides a well-balanced offering. And because of the uniqueness of each customer, look for a company that has product options that allow you to pick how the wedges of the pie are distributed in a manner that best meets your needs. One final point on product design: If the product provides benefits that are outside of the

industry norm, heed your father’s advice: “If it sounds like it’s too good to be true, it probably is!” This is because preneed insurance companies need to invest their reserves in the same environment. So any product that offers unusually strong benefits as compared to the market could be destined to fail. 10. Marketing. It goes without saying that every funeral home owner wants their business to grow. That’s why it’s important to locate a company that has an active marketing department – one that has made the commitment to provide your firm with ideas and support. A real plus would be to find a company whose marketing department is in step with its sales department, so that the synergy necessary for specific ideas and solutions will exist. Every firm is as different as the markets they serve. Rather than taking a “shotgun approach” with your marketing program - trying different things while hoping you will discover something that works - consider how committed the company is to provide you with proven solutions, specific for your communitycentered marketing efforts.
