Honor to Work Here Karen Thompson, Employment Coordinator Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission Randon Strange was recognized for his work at the REACH program year-end celebration at the College of Charleston. Joining him is Karen Thompson with CCPRC.
Every now and again, more often than not, those of us in the parks and recreation field have the opportunity to make a great impact on someone’s life. In turn, we are the lucky ones through the involvement we have, the connections we make, and the difference made in someone’s life. The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) has established a partnership with the College of Charleston’s REACH Program (Realizing Educational and Career Hopes), a four year program established to fully integrate students with mild intellectual and/or developmental disabilities into everyday college life and college experiences such as internships. Through this partnership, CCPRC brings on a student who has expressed a specific interest in the parks and recreation field as an intern. The intern then experiences what employment is like in a parks and recreation setting. This program is a terrific way to provide opportunities for students with disabilities to learn alongside parks and recreation professionals about our programs and parks. It is the hope that by the end of the semester-long internship, these students will have developed work skills that will enable them to be successful in their employment once they complete their certificate to graduate. CCPRC’s intern this year, Randon Strange, has had the opportunity to work at our equestrian center, open up a couple of our beach parks for the season, complete administrative

tasks, blaze new trails, set up for our East Coast Outdoor and Paddlesports Festival, work with our fitness and races team, and also work at events such as the Special Olympics. Randon has brought so much to our team efforts. When Randon was recently asked for feedback on his internship, to ensure he was getting what he needs from the program, his reply was, “It’s an honor to work here!” The impact this partnership has had in the development of these students’ tangible work skills has been pretty awesome. Beyond this annual internship, CCPRC has hired two program graduates to join our staff - one a graduate from the College of Charleston’s REACH Program, as well as a graduate from Carolina LIFE (Learning is For Everyone) Program. There are a total of five programs in South Carolina similar to the College of Charleston’s, one each at USC, Clemson University, Coastal Carolina, and Winthrop University. These colleges and universities also seek employers willing to provide internship opportunities and would love to connect with other parks and recreation agencies to create more amazing partnerships. CCPRC’s staff and the program intern alike are both so much better for this partnership.

THE ASSOCIATION REPORT
This issue of SCRPA’s magazine, Parks and Recreation in South Carolina, focuses on “How Parks and Recreation Impact Lives”. It’s almost easier to say, “How don’t we?” We are always amazed at the programs, services and parks that we continue to provide our citizens and visitors across the state. We have park and maintenance personnel who mow and keep facilities clean and safe, folks in accounting who balance the books, and programmers who see the smiles on the faces of the seniors and youth that we serve. And this is just to name some of the many ways that we serve. We encourage you to take time from your daily tasks and sit on a park bench. Watch the faces of children swinging or sliding on a playground. Go to the ball field and focus on a child’s expression after he or she catches the ball, scores the goal, or kicks the ball! It can make those long hours and difficult decisions much more worthwhile. The 2015 Joint Conference management team and subcommittees have been busy planning sessions, sponsors, and vendors for everyone. If you utilize a company that you haven’t seen at one of our conferences, please make contact with them and ask them to visit scrpa.org and become a vendor this year. The room block has been open for two months and all sessions will be released soon. We encourage everyone to make this year’s conference one to never forget by recruiting new vendors!
The Annual Conference will have a total attendance in excess of 900, with 600 professionals from South and North Carolina, 150 Students, and over 150 individuals representing over 130 companies and organizations helping you serve your various populations. At the start of next year, we will have our eighth SCRPA Leadership Enhancement And Development (SC LEAD) Institute designed for young professionals to advance their careers in public parks and recreation. This eight month program has graduated 69 Park and Recreation professionals with one becoming a city manager, seven current directors, 14 receiving “major” promotions, 29 SCRPA board members, nine committee chairs, 16 branch presidents and seven presidents of SCRPA. We hope your spring and summer months are awesome! Don’t forget to take time for yourself and your families.

Education is and will always REMAIN our association’s top priority. The leadership of SCRPA continues to look at delivery systems for education. Our current model has proven to be a good one with minor tweaking each year. This year we expanded our reach into on-line training to assist those who need it and those who learn better via the internet. We continue providing traditional faceto-face education through our district’s front line staff oriented training. Just this year, through our last round of district trainings/ workshops, we reached in excess of 120 members. Our branches continue to reach out to the membership through institutes and summits. To date, they have reached over 150 members.

City of Florence to increase access to:
Healthy Foods and Physical Activity “This grant allows us to expand our capabilities in our summer food program to reach even more hungry children than before. We are excited about the possibilities going forward.” — Darlene Buchanan Recreation Manager, City of Florence
T
he City of Florence Recreation Department recently partnered with NRPA to receive a $25,000 grant to support out-of-school time healthy food access and nutritional literacy programs. The City of Florence was one of 75 recreation departments that received a portion of the funds, which were provided by the Walmart Foundation. The receipt of this grant will help the City increase access to healthy foods and improve opportunities for physical activity. The City will also receive additional support for meals provided through USDA afterschool and summer feeding programs as well as nutritional literacy materials to help ensure life-long healthy habits for Florence’s youth. The purpose of the grant is to: increase the number of healthy meals children in low-income communities receive; provide nutrition literacy to children in an effort to encourage healthy eating; implement nutrition and physical activity standards to increase access to healthier foods and opportunities for physical activity; and

promote efficiencies to reduce costs, maximize resources, decrease food waste and lead to sustainable meal programs. This grant supports NRPA’s campaign “Commit to Health,” which encourages the implementation and evaluation of Healthy Eating, Physical Activity (HEPA) standards in park and recreation sites across the country. According to Share our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign, one in five children in America struggles with hunger. Over 21 million low-income children receive free or reduced meals during the school year to help them meet their daily nutrition needs, but only 3 million of these children are getting these meals during the summer. During summer months, these children may not have access to quality and healthy food to help them grow—making the city’s work during out-of-school times that much more critical.
“Thanks to a successful first year with Commit to Health and the Walmart Foundation, 51,382 children now have improved access to healthy foods and physical activity,” said Barbara Tulipane, President and CEO of NPRA. “Parks and recreation are proving their critical role in the health of their communities and we can’t wait to see the impact this year’s grants will have on fostering lifelong healthy habits in children across the country.” “We are so thankful to NRPA and Wal-Mart for this opportunity,” said City of Florence Recreation Manager Darlene Buchanan. “This grant allows us to expand our capabilities in our summer food program to reach even more hungry children than before. Hopelands Gardens Impacts Lives

When most people think of Parks and Recreation, playgrounds, bike trails, and athletics come to mind. An integral piece of the City of Aiken Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department is Hopelands Gardens. Hopelands Gardens was bequeathed to the City of Aiken in 1971 after the death of Hope Islein. Although Oliver and Hope Islein only spent their winters in Aiken, Mrs. Islein took great pride in developing the gardens. This beautiful public park plays host to many different events, from simple events such as family picnics and Girl Scout bridging ceremonies to more extravagant events like concerts, wedding ceremonies, and receptions. Some people come to the gardens to feed the fish; some come to propose marriage. Some come to find an escape from the stress of everyday life. Hopelands Gardens may be a City of Aiken facility, but it is so much more to the thousands of people who visit each year. Recently, one patron called to inquire about performing gospel music on the Windham Performing Arts Stage in the gardens. She hoped to do so because she had spent time in the gardens over the years and had found peace

and inspiration there. When going through a rough patch, this citizen came to the gardens for refuge and explained how the gardens saved her life. When times got tough, she found herself wandering through the gardens seeking peace. After spending time in the gardens she found the strength to persevere through her troubles. Many citizens hope to have their wedding ceremony in the gardens. The enchanting live oaks and picturesque reflecting pools promise a dream wedding for many local brides. There are many wedding venues in the area, but brides choose this outdoor location because of its beauty. Many couples visit the gardens after their wedding to reminisce one of the most important days of their lives. Hopelands Gardens serves many purposes, but the most important is its role as a welcoming haven for the citizens of Aiken and its visitors. The gardens continually make a significant impact on the lives of those who spend time among the live oaks, the fountains and reflecting pools, and the lazy winding pathways.

How Parks & Recreation Impact Lives Vincent Davis, Park Ranger Supervisor City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department
In the City of Columbia, the Park Rangers play a very unique role in a variety of people’s lives: from everyday patrons to out of town visitors to politicians. We are set up differently than most Parks & Recreation Departments. Here, every ranger does landscape maintenance, buildings maintenance, environmental education and general security patrols. We have patrons that visit our parks daily who our rangers have developed a relationship with, greeting them on first name basis. This makes our patrons feel good and safe when they visit our parks, and also lets them know that they are important to our department as well. You will be surprised of the impact of speaking or listening to a patron has on them. Our ranger program offers free environmental education classes where we demonstrate to the students that you can have fun and learn at the same time. One of our Park Ranger history lessons depicts the opening of Riverfront Park in 1983 for recreational usage of the land where the original waterworks for the City of Columbia was situated. This was also the site of the world’s
first electrically operated textile mill and hydroelectric plant, the oldest one in the state which is still operating. Riverfront Park is made up of one hundred forty acres with a lot of history that comes with it. The Three Rivers are our main attraction and we have built several programs around it, such as fishing and kayaking. This is an experience that some students would never have the opportunity to participate in if it wasn’t for our free programs. Rangers patrol the Three Rivers Greenway and give event support to concerts, weddings, races and City official meetings. The rangers also work with people that have made bad choices in life and have to do community service hours. These people view our ranger program as a chance to do something good and productive in the community. Our rangers take every opportunity to touch lives, leaving them with a fun, positive experience that ensures that they will be back to visit our park. We leave you with our motto that we operate by “Everybody Counts, Everybody Contributes and Everybody Benefits because It All Starts in Parks.”

The Impact We Have Steve Gergick, Deputy Director Town of Mount Pleasant Recreation Department
The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department (MPRD) serves hundreds of residents every day. Why do we do it? Why do we provide recreation programs and facilities to our populations? It’s because parks and recreation departments positively impact lives and make a real difference in our communities. How do we know? Our customers tell us. For Amy Pariano, the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department made an impact on the life of her son Lucas. Lucas started taking lessons from Clay Maynor at the Mugsy Kerr Tennis Complex when he was only 7 years old. Clay worked with Lucas for more than six years until the Pariano family relocated out of town in 2009. Clay recently received an email from Ms. Pariano telling him that Lucas is the captain of his high school tennis team and thanking Clay for the impact he had on Lucas as he was growing up. She writes, “No, he is not being recruited by Clemson, he is going to Colorado State in the fall, but it has been so cool to see his love for tennis evolve and him become a leader and a role model for his teammates on and off the court. Most importantly, thank you for emphasizing good sportsmanship and humility. You will be pleased to know that he represents you well!” Christine Inabinet works as a Special Education Teacher at Stiles Point Elementary School. Her students have limited mobility and typically don’t get to experience the same opportunities as their peers. She contacted MPRD Aquatics Coordinator, Jeff Garrard, about bringing her children to the R.L. Jones Center Aquatics facility
to work on the children’s range of motion while allowing them to enjoy the water and have fun. In a thank you letter she writes “Due to Jeff Garrard’s hard work, we arrived at the pool feeling quite like celebrities. The staff was ready and welcoming to us, assisting us into the pool and ensuring that we could safely access the locker rooms and surrounding areas. Our world has made great progress in recent years to include individuals with special needs in the community activities, but it still has quite a long way to go. It is nice to know that at your pool, we are all one in the same. Thank you for surpassing our expectations.” So the next time you need a shot of inspiration, get up and go see the smiles on the faces of participants in your programs. Parks and recreation programs do make a difference. We impact lives!

the Lives of Children — It’s a Two-way Street! Marcia Murff, Public Relations and Development Manager Spartanburg County Parks Department
In the world of Parks and Recreation, the youth in the community are greatly impacted by the programs and services we provide. In Spartanburg County, we provide yearround services through our after school and summer camp programs. Unlike many other child care providers, Spartanburg Parks has targeted goals to guide our program plans incorporating character education, nutrition and fitness. Recreational activities are the vehicle we use to truly touch the lives of the children we serve. In order to get buy-in from the children, everything has to be fun. Traditional child-care centers are focused on regimented and basic care, and public schools place their priority on academics. Because of the nature of the parks and recreation business - serving the community, partnering with like-minded organizations, providing citizens with quality of life and being on the cutting edge of recreational programming - it seems the care of the child as a whole is reached. Part of the reason we are able to achieve this goal is because we are not constrained by so many regulations. We have freedom to be creative in developing an atmosphere that gives the child a fun experience while simultaneously reaching our targeted goals.
When we talk about parks and recreation impacting lives, it is personal. It is a story that cannot be told across the board but rather in many small experiences in individual lives. Chandler is one such experience. He was a seven-year-old child with special needs coming into summer camp for the first time. His parents had some reservations about him being accepted and having a good experience. Due to the emphasis on character education, the staff was confident he would have a positive experience. Over the course of the summer, he received encouragement and gained confidence. Near the end of the summer, Chandler went swimming for the very first time with the rest of the campers. He had never been swimming before. It was a huge success and the campers rallied around him and cheered him on his accomplishment. “He changed the lives of the staff and other campers even more than his life was changed by the program and people,” said Assistant Recreation Manager Elizabeth Hardee. “He was a source of inspiration and earned the love and respect of his peers and counselors. He impacted our lives just as much as we impacted his.”

Wheelchair Tennis Makes an Impact in Rock Hill Kim Ozmon, Rock Hill Tennis Center Supervisor City of Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism
Recreation professionals, supported by well-maintained parks and a variety of programming offerings, are in a position to make a difference in someone’s life every day. The results -- a senior citizen or a child may find companionship or a new hobby by taking a class at a recreation center. An athlete’s competitive spirit may be nourished by a youth or adult sports league on our ball fields. The nature lover seeking a place for reflection or the opportunity to learn more about the environment may wander a trail or take a class on birding. While the Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department provides such opportunities every day, in answer to the question “How do we impact lives?”, we want to highlight the significant impact that the Rock Hill Tennis Center and our Wheelchair Program has made in the lives of three individuals. Nick Burnham was injured in a workplace accident in 2008 that led to incomplete paralysis (spinal cord partially severed) of his lower extremities. He said he went from feeling like superman to not being able to do anything. Nick was in search of an avenue to become active again.

He starting playing tennis in 2011 and joined the Tennis Center in 2013. Nick found that the sport of tennis along with a local club supportive of wheelchair tennis could help him return to an active lifestyle. He is now a competitive player and plays in many USTA tournaments. Nick is also certified to teach wheelchair tennis, and he helps with the local programs at the Tennis Center. Larry Keeter was injured in 2006 on senior day at his high school in Fort Mill, SC. He had received a wrestling scholarship to attend Limestone College. Needless to say, it was a very dark time for Larry, who says he felt broken. Larry and Nick met at a water skiing event, and Nick thought tennis would be a perfect fit for Larry. He felt tennis might appeal to Larry’s competitive nature due to his wrestling background, so he invited Larry to play. Larry and Nick are now tennis doubles partners and both play at the Tennis Center and compete nationwide. In 2006, during his first semester of college, a young man named Taylor Wingate was in a car accident. One night, loose gravel on a back road caused him to lose control of his vehicle.

He flipped and was left wheelchair-bound, listed as an incomplete paraplegic. The next few years brought therapy and attempts to continue with college. But his life had changed drastically, and he struggled with depression. It was during therapy that Taylor learned about wheelchair sports and the many benefits. Taylor met Larry who invited him to a wheelchair clinic at the Tennis Center. The clinic was led by Paralympian Karin Korb and supported by sponsors Bridge II Sports, Orthotic and Prosthetic Activities Foundation (OPAF) and the Mid-Carolina Tennis Association. These groups have a common goal of improving the quality of life for those with physical disabilities. Taylor fell in love with the sport and realized he could still be competitive. He started playing often, going to clinics and working with Coach Tedi Doncheva. Playing tennis helped him with his selfesteem. He found a new passion for life and realized how much he still has to offer. Taylor has played competitively for 10 months and recently won the Men’s B Division at the Cajun Classic Wheelchair Tennis Tournament in Baton Rouge, LA.
Larry, Nick and Taylor are all very important to the Rock Hill Tennis Center’s Wheelchair Program. They are an inspiration to other people, old and young. Their goal is to raise awareness of wheelchair tennis and to recruit recreational and competitive players for tournaments. They are true role models, showing the wheelchair youth community that they, too, can be strong and active, despite their disabilities. The City of Rock Hill and partners, the Mid-Carolina Tennis Association and Carolina Rollin Rackets, make the Wheelchair Program at the Rock Hill Tennis Center a success. They have tapped into grant opportunities offered by the USTA and participated in the USTA of South Carolina’s sport chair loaner program. Free clinics are offered at the Tennis Center every Friday morning. Eight wheelchair players are currently involved in the program. This is a great example of a program that impacts lives by providing an avenue of recovery from physical and emotional challenges, as well as an enhanced quality of life.

Camp Spearhead, founded in 1968 and located in the mountains of upstate South Carolina, has a mission of providing an environment of unconditional acceptance for children and adults with special needs. It serves over 700 campers from across South Carolina, neighboring states, and beyond by providing an 8 week summer camp season and 20 weekend social/recreational activities throughout the school-year. My sister, Katie, has been a camper for nearly 20 years (campers do not “age-out” at Camp Spearhead). Katie is 32 years old and has Down syndrome. At Spearhead, she and her friends are given the opportunity to demonstrate courage by learning new skills in boating, swimming, fishing, challenge course, dancing, yoga, cooking, drama, and a host of other activities just like typical children at other summer camps. Camp Spearhead believes everyone deserves a chance to go to camp. The 20 weekend activities during the school year are highly valued by the families. Most recently Katie enjoyed going to the movies with about 80 of her camp friends, visiting the Sea-Life Aquarium in Charlotte, and attending a Harlem Globetrotters game. While these activities are fun and nurturing for the campers, they also provide a great source of respite for their parents and caregivers.

While Spearhead clearly executes on its mission of improving the lives of the campers, it has enormous collateral benefit. It literally changes the lives of parents, staff, and volunteers. It is hard to overstate the impact of Camp Spearhead. To my sister Katie, and to her fellow campers and their families, Camp Spearhead is more than just a camp! The campers truly love it and the excitement leading up to camp is incredible. In fact, other than Christmas and family birthdays, there is nothing Katie enjoys more. For the parents, finally there is full confidence that their child with special needs is in a safe, loving, and nurturing environment with trained and devoted staff.
Carnes spent her summers working as a Camp Spearhead counselor. Because of that experience and the impact the campers had on her, she became a special education teacher. Clearly, Camp Spearhead has made a huge difference in the lives of my sister, Katie, her fellow campers, their families and the staff and volunteers. My family has been impacted so much by Camp Spearhead that we were moved to do something meaningful to develop
more financial support for its campers. In 2008 we pulled together a fundraising golf tournament. This April we hosted our 8th Annual John Cameron Memorial Spearhead Open raising more than $20K in support of Spearhead’s great campers. Camp Spearhead is more than just a camp. Since its founding in 1968, it has been impacting the lives of its campers, their families, volunteers, staff and the community at large.

It provides caregiving parents, like mine, much needed breaks from the necessary daily care and supervision. For the college-aged staff, their Spearhead experience is often the first time they’ve had to put others’ needs before their own. Spending eight weeks as a counselor focused on those with special needs changes the way they look at and appreciate life. Evidence of the power of the Spearhead staff experience is seen through the life of Katie’s high school teacher Karen Carnes. As a teenager, Ms.
