From the editor A Place for the Community
Volume 2, Issue 2
The West End is the “it” place of the Twin Cities. I’ve even heard it referred to as the “new Uptown.” Practically every day I hear a positive buzz about The Shops at West End. “It’s my favorite movie theater.” “I love the Rainbow.” “It’s our regular happy hour spot.” We’re happy to be your lifestyle center. Our stores and restaurants have done a great job accommodating our guests and creating a true sense of community. People love meeting here for lunch, shopping on a weekend for a new first-date outfit and checking out a new blockbuster in the comfortable theater.
I speak for all of us at The Shops at West End when I say “thank you for making us part of your community”.
In this issue of Compass we highlight the many ways the West End area helps to create community. A wedding story showcases the many ways merchants can help with your wedding. From rings, accessories and flowers, to event spaces for your bachelor/bachelorette parties and grooms dinners, you can take care of it all here, in one place. This publication also features ways West End merchants are giving back to local and national causes; great tips and hints from local health care providers; and unique active dating ideas. MINQ is slated to open at the end of May and will feature, higher-end clothing for both men and women. “We like to refer to the women’s collection as ‘the Twin Cities dress address’,” Stacey said. “And for men, we will be featuring a diverse collection of quality garments and accessories designed for men who aren’t afraid to dress with style!”
MINQ will include a Scott James storewithin-a-store concept
“I was happy to take a bit of a break from the industry to focus on my other business but really miss my clients and serving them. I continue to run into my old clients who have consistently encouraged me to get back in the game. They have told me that the collection I pulled together for iL Vostro was unique and they have struggled to find such a collection anywhere else in the Twin Cities,” said Stacey. MINQ will also feature the only Scott James store-within-a-store concept in Minnesota. The Scott James collection is designed by Scott Kuhlman, the former owner of the Kuhlman stores.

If You Like It, Put a Ring on It First things first. You can’t have a wedding without an accepted proposal. And you can’t have a proposal without the ring. The Shops at West End is proud to have two engagement and wedding ring specialists on site. Wedding Day Diamonds and Bergstrom Jewelers both have a long history of helping select the perfect engagement ring. Wedding Day Diamonds Wedding Day Diamonds has transformed over many years in the jewelry business. The company was founded in 1978 as a tiny store in Eden Prairie Center. They sold everything related to jewelry including porcelain collectables and figurines. In 1994, after many sleepless nights, owners Dean and Umit decided to get focused and be known for one
thing, rather than being known for nothing. They reinvented their business as one of the first engagement ring-only stores in America. Through it all, their focus has not changed: “It’s about you, our staff and our jewelry.” We suggest you stop into the store and see just what being a specialist in the industry means for quality and selection. For more on the company, visit their website at www.weddingdaydiamonds.com. Bergstrom Jewelers There are thousands of jewelers across the country. So how do you find a jeweler you can trust? For nearly 90 years, families in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area have trusted Bergstrom Jewelers with many special occasions in their lives. Bergstroms is delighted that people choose them to celebrate those moments. After all, most purchases signify
an important event or milestone in someone’s life. That’s why they say: “Begin with Bergstrom.” As a local, family-owned business, they know trust is something you earn and a reputation is something you build. You won’t find hard-sell tactics or pushy sales people at Bergstrom. Instead, you’ll find friendly faces eager to answer your questions and find the jewelry that fits your needs and your budget. Stop in to chat with one of their staff or visit their website at www. bergstromjewelers.com.

So, to compensate, if it rains on your wedding day, they’ll refund your engagement ring purchase up to $5,000 up to 18 months from time of purchase.* Shopping at Bergstrom Jewelers certainly has its perks — and can contribute to your rainy day fund. Weddings are as individual as the couples getting married. Anything goes when choosing wedding flower arrangements. Q&A with Stacia Lindholm, certified floral designer, at Rainbow and owner of Garden of the Gods Floral Design. She specializes in wedding and special event flowers. Learn more at www.gardenofthegodsfloral.com Q What do you do if you’re on a budget for flowers?
A The budget-conscious
bride can achieve a beautiful look that is often whimsical or natural looking. Consulting magazines can help build ideas. Remember, time is very-important and if you have out-of-town guests, rehearsals, and beauty sleep on your priority list, the professionals are there for a reason. If you do choose to do it yourself, make a flower recipe and do a run-through.
Q What is most important when selecting flowers?
A The key to do-it-yourself
flowers is to buy fresh flowers a few days before your wedding. Give them a chance to open and hydrate by re-cutting the stems every day. Always order 10% more flowers than needed for your recipes.
Q Which flowers are popular for which seasons?
A The 2013 trend for wed-
ding flowers is succulents! They provide great contrast and texture, and work with exotic flowers and delicate flowers. The David Austin garden rose is one of the most
sought after. Orchids, lilies and roses are always a great choice and always available. Peonies, lily of the valley, and tulips are great choices for spring; protea, birds of paradise and gloriosa lilies for summer; and sunflowers, kangaroo paw, and mums are perfect for fall.
Q What are some unique ways to use flowers at your wedding?
A You could suspend them
from fishing line and hang them either in a tall cylinder vase or from manzanita branches. Birdcages or lanterns surrounded by moss with randomly placed flowers and a feather or two is a great way to showcase your individual style.
Q How can Rainbow help with flowers?
A Rainbow can help brides
create a beautiful day. Corsages, boutonnieres, and hand-tied bouquets are all available: however, the bride must be flexible in flower selection. We cannot specify color unless we choose long stem roses. We get a great selection in our European Flower Market, but remember to make your order at least one month in advance.

Take care of your
Skin!
Spring brings to mind dewy, radiant skin. The best way to get back that elusive glow is a deep exfoliation to slough off the excess of dry, dead skin cells we’ve accumulated over the winter months.
By Kate Plec, licensed esthetician and makeup artist, phresh spa salon
Microdermabrasion is a fabulous treatment that gently resurfaces the skin and stimulates circulation. Non-invasive chemical peels that require no downtime are another great option. Besides exfoliation, the chemical peels can stimulate collagen production, treat acne and reduce hyperpigmentation. Your esthetician will determine what treatment is best suited for your skin’s needs. Two of my favorite at-home exfoliators are Eminence’s Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant and Skin Ceutical’s Clarifying Clay Masque. They are both optimal for all skin types. The Dermafoliant is a rice based powder with lactic and salicylic acids, which give both manual and chemical exfoliation, strawberries to brighten and thermal mud, which is deep cleaning and regenerative. It is gentle enough for everyday use and can be mixed in to your cleanser. The Clarifying Clay Masque combines natural clays with hydroxy acid to exfoliate, detoxify, and decongest pores. Weekly usage leaves skin purified. For more congested skin use twice a week.

The spotlight shines brightly on a local radio personality After hearing about a local DJ’s weight loss, The Shops at West End was inspired to reward her motivation with a makeover. What transpired in the process of learning more about this spunky on-air talent was more than anyone bargained for.

alen Bonsett is like any typical 28-year-old. She loves fashion, is a huge music fan and enjoys relaxing at local hangouts with her gal pals. Unlike other late 20-somethings, however, she talks to thousands of people daily as part of one of the most popular morning shows in the Twin Cities. Her motivation of making it big in radio has brought her to her dream job at KDWB, whose studios are located right behind The Shops at West End.
Bonsett has struggled with her weight since as far back as she can remember. Her move to Minneapolis in 2012 brought her weight to the forefront in a very public way. A few local Twin Citians found numerous social media outlets to make it known. Instead of heeding the advice to ignore the posts by fellow on-air talents, she decided to read the blogs. Falen’s KDWB BLOG ENTRY: People in MN were not nearly as forgiving of my weight as people in Indiana and Nevada were. People let me know how fat I was ... constantly. At first, I would sit at my computer, read the comments and cry. I was in a new town, I didn’t have my family or friends, and I sabotaged myself reading filth about myself. I decided I didn’t want them to be right. I was happy that most of them were judging me for my weight and not for my talent because weight was something I could change. “When you’re in the public eye, you’re expected to be thin,” said Bonsett. “It felt
Falen Before

After an extended on-and off-air interview process, Bonsett landed the job and quickly made the transition from her gig in Reno, Nev. to the Twin Cities. When she arrived in this market, she was excited to get on air. She loved exploring the city and meeting new people in the market. However, what started as a dream for this beautiful young talent quickly turned into a nightmare. While she loved her job, her co-workers and the Twin Cities, she quickly realized how brutally vocal a small segment of a community could be – not about her voice or her personality, but because of the way she looked. Specifically, her weight.
like people needed to find some reason not to like the ‘new girl.’” Bonsett had a period of time in her life when she felt she was doing something about her weight. In high school she was very active in sports and ate pretty healthily. It wasn’t until after high school that her challenge with diet and weight management took a toll. FALEN’S KDWB BLOG ENTRY: College is when things went south. I began eating fast food, and our dorm didn’t have a stove, so cooking wasn’t really an option. I stopped playing sports, I got cable TV, and I started drinking alcohol. I gained about 10 lbs a year for the next four years. By the time I went to Reno, NV in early 2010, I hit 200lbs. I never in my life thought I could or would ever hit that mark. I remember thinking, “this isn’t ok.” I knew I was uncomfortable, but for some reason, I really didn’t think I was THAT big. I look at photos now, and I can’t believe I let myself get that out of control. I joined Weight Watchers that day. I got down to 167, and I started celebrating. At the end of 2012 and a half a year in Minnesota, Bonsett was approached by a weight loss program to use their system. She embraced it and was ready for a real transformation. Through structured eating and a dedicated fitness routine, a dramatic change occurred from November 2012 to mid-January 2013, she lost 20 lbs – her

lowest weight since her freshman year in college. And she felt good emotionally. A challenge dieters face when they begin a program is knowing what weight is healthy for them. Bonsett says the weight loss program she’s on has set two goals for her. The first is her personal goal, and the second an optional goal to be the lowest they would allow for her body type.

For those who struggle with their weight, Bonsett offers this advice, “You are the only one who can do anything about it. Any diet will work if you’re strict to it and use it properly.”
2 “I’m realistic. I know I’ll never be 110 lbs,” said Bonsett. “And I understand that I can’t rely on a doctor’s scale to classify me as overweight. My body has a high muscle mass and that has to be factored in. That’s my reality and I’m OK with that.”

Bonsett is well aware that diet and exercise are key to any weight loss program. Having grown up in the south, she said her ma-ma (grandmother) loved to push the carbs on her, everything from rolls to sweets. That was a way of life. She now realizes that the best thing to maintain a healthy metabolism is to eat smaller meals more often; and her workout routine must be consistent as well. Like many of us, she hates to work out but knows it makes her feel better.
She also reiterated that weight loss isn’t for everyone, nor does it have to be. “It’s fine to be you. You just have to understand what ‘you’ is for you. In my mind, ‘me’ is someone healthy and active. You can embrace your curves as long it’s not dangerous to your health.” Today Bonsett glows. Her energy is contagious. You can tell she’s on her way to living a life true to her. In the end that’s what matters. You can read Bonsett’s entire blog at daveryanshow.iheart.com; click on BLOGS, then Bonsett’s Weight Loss.
A Pampered Experience The Shops at West End treated Falen Bonsett to a full makeover – from having her hair, makeup and nails done, to selecting new casual and formal attire. We brought in the expertise of image consultant Sasha Westin of Fabuliss. Westin met with Bonsett two weeks prior to the makeover to do an in-depth color analysis that uses a special lighting system

4 Bonsett tried on a couple of dresses in colors from her color chart, but wasn’t comfortable with their cut. Westin emphasized that Bonsett has an hourglass figure, so they needed to find a piece that highlighted her waist. In the end, Bonsett chose a black strapless taffeta WH|BM dress and accented it with a stainless steel belt and Jenn peep toe slingback fuscia heels.
to analyze Bonsett’s true tonal ranges. Westin tested hundreds of swatches against Bonsett’s skin, eyes, hair and the reds in her skin. A color analysis aids in determining what colors are good with the client’s face and helps the eyes “pop” the best. Out of the color analysis came a custom color swatch fan that pulls together all the colors that are most flattering to Bonsett’s skin, eye and hair tones. The day before our makeover and photo shoot, Bonsett paid a visit to Glamour Nails for a manicure. For a durable finish, she chose a long-lasting Shellac gel polish in a berry chosen from her custom809784_07519 ized color fan. “My nails got a much needed manicure. Glamour Nails had3.625" a x 4.25" great selection of colors. I’m a big fan of Shellac because my polish 4C doesn’t stand a chance otherwise,” said Bonsett. We reconnected the next day to spend a full day at The Shops at West End with Bonsett helping her select outfits and accessories that fit both her personality and body type. Bonsett admitted, “Trying on clothes out of my comfort zone was so good for me. Sasha had me try on things I would normally never even second glance at. Sometimes we think we know what looks best on us, but there are so many other things that would be much more flattering.” For her casual outfit, we took Bonsett to Apricot Lane Boutique. Owner Kristine Haas’s store has been very popular since it opened last November. Westin wanted Bonsett to look at clothes that fit her color palette and were flattering. Bonsett found that in a Tyche print dress, Mavi denim jacket and BC burgundy suede pumps. Bonsett’s business attire is usually pretty relaxed since she’s on radio. However, she does make a lot of appearances at special events and shows. For a more formal event look, we turned to White House | Black Market. WH|BM is a great place for business formal and casual. It’s a popular store among career professionals.

5 To finish off the looks, we took Bonsett to Bergstrom Jewelers where 14-year veteran sales associate Rod Else assisted in selecting accessories. Bergstrom is known for not only their engagement rings, but also an expansive selection of fashion jewelry in many different styles and price ranges. For the casual look, 14K metallic bracelets from Bergstrom Jewelers were chosen to emphasize Bonsett’s Tyche print dress. For the formal black dress, a faceted silver and fresh water pearl necklace and a 14K white gold and diamond bracelet from Bergstrom Jewelers helped finish the look. Off we headed to phresh spa salon in the shopping center’s central arcade area.

When Bonsett got to phresh she knew exactly what she wanted. In her consult with stylist Molly Nelson, she requested a darker, richer hue of brown, but something still with warm hints of chocolate. She previously had an ombre color technique, so Nelson had to prepare two different formulas for the base and ends.

“I kept her base level about the same that she was, but enriched it with some warmer hints. As for the ends, I pulled a darker color with a lot of tints of gold and caramel to enrich the previously lightened ends,” said Nelson.

As for her style, Nelson said she was fortunate to work with Bonsett’s gorgeous natural hair length. Nelson started with Oribe’s Supershine cream, which seals down the cuticle, adds moisture, and serves as a heat protectant. She then layered Oribe’s Volumista at her base, applied Gel Serum through her lengths and used a large round brush throughout to achieve gorgeous volume and shine.
“We finished with some wrap-around curls to create a little more glamour for the photo shoot. I used Oribe’s Dry Texture spray to maintain the volume we created, as well as Superfine hairspray to set the look,” added Nelson. For the finishing touches, Bonsett headed over to phresh’s makeup artist Kate Plec who applied Eminence organic skincare products. “They use only the healthiest ingredients, without any harmful chemicals or additives. They’re used to give premium results to all skin types,” said Plec. On Falen, Plec wanted to create flawless skin that would last throughout her long day. She used Eminence Smooth Affair Primer and Glow Time BB Cream. Both products contain grapefruit extract, which gives skin luminosity, and apple extract, which adds skin-smoothing antioxidants to minimize pores, and plump fine lines and wrinkles. The Glow Time gives full coverage with minimal product usage and is also water resistant, giving it serious staying power. Then came a pop of So Bronze 2 on the high points of the face and Awake Pure Pressed Blush on the apples of the cheeks. “I wanted to showcase Falen’s gorgeous blue eyes, so I used a combination of light and dark brown tones of Cappuccino and Double Espresso Pure Pressed Shadows,” said Plec.

Making a home functional
for a family of four can be a challenge – imagine planning a living space for more than 200 residents. For over five years, owner and developer The Excelsior Group, general contractor Minneapolis-based Ryan Companies, and architect BKV Group, have been working together to do just that. The team’s vision for an amazing multi-family living space has helped the new Flats at West End smoothly come to fruition.
4
Debuting May 2013, The Flats at West End will offer smashing studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom rental flats located at The Shops at West End – close to the best the Twin Cities has to offer. West End Compass sat down with the key designers of the Flats at West End to discover the processes taken to create the masterpiece that is this amazing multi-family living space.

The original concepts were designed by looking at the West End clientele, considering the urban aspects of the community and combining it with the high-end sophistication of the area, ultimately, with the hopes that it would appeal to a variety of demographics that want to call West End home. We approached the design with a “lifestyle” in mind, incorporating amenities that

discussed what type of overall “brand” we wanted to present to the market. Through the visioning process we understood where we were being drawn and began the schematic design. Several design ideas and finishes were presented to the committee for common areas and living spaces. As soon as the team agreed on the design direction we took the drawings
through the construction document phase. Lastly, furniture, art and finishing touches were incorporated to unite the urban design and the West End brand through to all areas of the property.
Q What are the primary materials used for flooring, cabinetry, countertops, hardware?
A A mixture of tile, wood and high-end
carpeting are all used for flooring in the common areas. Inside the flats, a luxury vinyl tile and carpeting is being used. Espresso wood cabinets appear both in the flats and common areas. Hardware is a brushed stainless accent.
Q What are current trends in community living environments?
A Amenities like high-end fitness rooms, plush, multifunctional clubrooms, concierge-type services for residents and dramatic outdoor living areas.
Q What’s unique about the design of the Flats?
A It has a sophisticated design that is current and
contemporary, but will also appeal across all demographics. Rich wood and stone create a zen-like, beautiful environment. Lots of glass, vaulted ceilings in living spaces, the upper level pool, rooftop terrace, and rich unit finishes help set the Flats apart.

Q What excites you about this project?
A Location, location, location! These are the first – and only – residences right at The Shops at West End. Plus, the amenities are extremely desirable.

After initially hearing the developer talk about the West End project and its location, we were very excited to become a part of the team. It’s such a unique urban environment in the St. Louis Park community – we are so excited to see it all come together.
Q If you were going to live at the Flats, what are the top three reasons you’d call it home?
A Location, accessibility and quality finishes. How

Raku Sushi and Lounge Written by Gina Gryniewski | Photography by Todd Pernsteiner

Have a hankering for amazing sushi? Raku has some of the best sushi in the Twin Cities and is the new place to go at The Shops at West End. This new addition can hang with some of the higher-end restaurants you would expect to find in larger cities like Los Angeles and New York, with a wide array of sushi plates, fresh fish and spectacular presentations. Raku is unique. This Japanese restaurant prides itself on the chef ’s ability to incorporate Italian, French and other influences outside of the Japanese culture. “We wanted to be the one of the first to introduce fusion to Minnesota,” said owner Jacky Wang. “Besides using other cultural influences in our dishes, it is also very important that we present our dishes to our guests in a very beautiful and artistic manner.” With only a handful of options for sushi, the great location and the booming business at the West End, owners Jacky Wang and Audrey Qian jumped at the opportunity to open up Raku. They opened their original Raku in Edina over three years ago and were waiting for the right location to expand. “We loved this location and couldn’t wait for our grand opening last fall,” Audrey said. “We are especially looking forward to summer when we can take full advantage of the front patio,” Jacky added. When you walk by Raku, one of the first things you notice is the very trendy, under-lit bar. The red lights aren’t the only cool thing about the bar; it is also a full sake bar with over 20 premium sakes to choose from. Upon entering the restaurant, you will also notice the prime seating area including a modified version of the traditional
Japanese tatami seating. Traditional tatami has guests sitting on the floor on pillows. Raku adapted this concept to allow diners’ legs to extend under the table. These are the most requested tables, so it is recommended that you make an advanced reservation if you’d like to be seated here.
Raku fun fact
The flavors at Raku are as satisfying as the décor. Besides the fresh sashimi, Raku’s specialty rolls are quite delicious. They offer a variety of rolls, all presented in unique and artistic ways. Below is a list of Compass magazine’s recommendations, although you really can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.
The word raku translates to ease, enjoyment or pleasure in Japanese.
For Starters
Lost Tuna – Seared peppered tuna wrapped around mixed greens with a Japanese citrus dressing, topped with jalapeno and tobiko. My take: This was one of the most refreshing appetizers I have ever had! It could take the place of a salad or small entrée for people with lighter appetites. The citrus dressing complimented the tuna and the presentation was beautiful.
Specialty Rolls
Raku-roll-ah – Deep fried spicy tuna stuffed with crabmeat and topped with fresh tuna, avocado, masago, and scallions. My take: It’s deep fried, who wouldn’t love this?!
Playboy – Shrimp tempura, asparagus and spicy tuna topped with shrimp. My take: This roll was flaming! Literally. It came wrapped in aluminum foil and was lit on fire. Besides the roll being delicious, the presentation was worth every penny.
Art of Maki – Thinly sliced tuna stuffed with spicy crabmeat, avocado and sprouts. My take: The “Art of Maki” roll is to die for! Unlike traditional sushi rolls, this roll has no rice. It’s one of the healthier specialty rolls on the menu and definitely a front-runner. Raku is a great high-end addition to The Shops at West End. If you love sushi, but are on a tight budget, we recommend you take advantage of their happy hour specials. Guests can enjoy 50% off select appetizers, sushi, rolls, soups and salads. Happy hour runs Monday-Thursday from 3-6 p.m. and 9-11 p.m., and Fridays from 3-6 p.m.

What is the best thing an adult can do to protect their teeth? Regular checkups. This includes cleanings, exams, fluoride, and x-rays as needed. The best tool to protect your teeth is knowing if and when treatment is needed, and then preventing future treatment.
What type of toothbrush do you recommend? A Sonicare® electric toothbrush. It has been proven that an electric toothbrush removes more plaque by 30-40% throughout the mouth, including below the gums and between the teeth. The built-in twominute timer also helps to ensure you do a complete job! What type of toothpaste works best? Whatever kind you will use! Actually, the best toothpaste is the most basic you can find, such as Crest ® or Colgate Total®. Colgate Total contains an extra active ingredient to help cut down on bacteria that cause gingivitis and bad breath. We recommend staying away from whitening toothpastes – they are not on your teeth long enough to truly whiten. Whitening toothpastes are more abrasive and remove surface stains. However, the abrasiveness of

What are the worst things people can eat or drink that affect their teeth? Acid is a common culprit of harm to teeth in adult dentition. Things that are acidic include: coffee, diet sodas, water with lemon, sports drinks and some wines. The biggest mistake people make is sipping their beverage instead of drinking it quickly. When you sip you continuously bathe your teeth in acid, which in turn creates an environment for cavities. One final take away? Acids also make your teeth softer. It is best not to brush your teeth right away after drinking something acidic; instead, wait 30 minutes after drinking

square inch to the lower back. Get up and move every 30 to 45 minutes. Walk to the bathroom, stretch, or go say hello to a coworker around the corner. Our bodies were made to move, not sit. This simple trick will keep joints lubricated and help reduce spine degeneration and back pain. When should someone seek chiropractic care? According to Louis Chang, M.D., of Web MD, $86 billion are spent on neck and back pain a year. Most of this expense is spent on drugs and surgery. “Despite the dramatic increase in spending little improvement is seen with patients,” he said. Chiropractic treatment works on the premise of restoring joint function (primarily in the spine) and therefore restoring nerve function. It’s like flipping a circuit breaker back on after it has been tripped. Treatment is primarily done by an adjustment (moving the joint to restore normal position and function). The result is most often seen and felt by reduced swelling, pain, and an increase in nerve flow to the affected area. Most patients feel relief almost immediately. For us it’s simple, if there is a pebble in your shoe, take it out. Don’t take an aspirin. This is what we do and we do it well. We have thousands of patients (just like Consumer Reports shows) that are very satisfied. One final take away? Something we’ve likely heard hundreds of times is that 70-80% of disease comes from lifestyle habits. If people focus on a healthy lifestyle and commit to retraining their body and mind, they will not only see, but feel, improvements on their body as a whole. Ask the Pharmacist Khashayar Memari Rainbow Pharmacy Manager Is there a difference between a generic and a name brand medication? There is no difference between the active ingredients used in a brand name medicine and a generic substitute. However, the other ingredients, called excipients, may be different between a generic and a brand name. If you are susceptible to gas pain when eating, is it better to take something before or after you eat? If you are susceptible to gas pain and you experience gas pain frequently, it is recommended to take gas medicines half an hour to one hour prior to a meal. Simethicone, which is a frequently used active ingredient in many gas and stomach discomfort medicines, is a good option to be taken before a meal in order to reduce gas and stomach discomfort. What is Airborne and is it effective? Airborne is a brand name medicine that helps support the immune system with some vitamins and minerals. Airborne contains zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Vitamin E, Vitamin A and some other ingredients that the manufacturer claims to be useful to cover common cold symptoms. Airborne is an over the counter product, and there are no studies that support its effectiveness. However, there are many positive stories shared by the users of Airborne at the website and Facebook page of the producers.
Which pain relievers work the fastest? There are many strong pain relievers that are not available over-the-counter and some of them are considered as controlled medicines. However, controlling mild to moderate pain with available over-the-counter products is a relatively safe way to treat pain. Pain killers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen are available over the counter. As a general rule, the liquid formulations are relatively faster compared to solid dosage forms. What over-the-counter sleep aids are available? There are a few over-the-counter sleeping aids available in our pharmacy. Some of them contain diphenhydramine as the active ingredient and some of them contain natural products such as melatonin as the active sleeping aid ingredient. How is Rainbow Pharmacy unique? Rainbow Pharmacy provides fast and high quality service to our customers. We intend to know our patients, the healthcare providers, and the special needs and requirements of each individual customer. We provide services such as immunizations, pharmacist and patient centered diabetes care, free delivery service, and drug utilization review for our patients. At Rainbow Pharmacy we are committed to provide a superior service that exceeds the expectation of every single customer. Khashayar Memari is the pharmacy manager at the St. Louis Park Rainbow Pharmacy. He holds a Pharm.D. degree and a MBA degree in Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Health Economic Research. He has practiced as a pharmacist for 10 years in the United States and overseas, and has worked for pharmaceutical companies for seven years. dating goes
Airborne
Unique outings have couples bouncing off the wall...literally.
Story and photography by Todd Pernsteiner
Couples who have been together for a while tend to fall into a “boring date” routine. While it’s true nights out can be enjoyable no matter what the location, we made it our mission to seek out active date options for three couples who were looking to mix it up. Each of our duos got an adventure date; one pair at a trampoline park, another a climbing wall gym and the third at an aerial arts studio. For the dates, we fitted the three with active apparel from lululemon athletica at The Shops at West End. lululemon is known for
34
theshopsatwestend.com
their yoga and running apparel, but their gear is also perfectly suited for other types of fitness endeavors as well. Prior to the dates, we consulted with lululemon product expert Jennifer Sjoberg who helped our couples select products that would be best suited for the type of activity they were engaging in. She also helped educate our six lucky candidates on the features of the products and proper care instructions. Soon we were off to make the dates happen.
Megan and Ben Kolkman Date Location: Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park, Plymouth Megan Kolkman, Software sales executive at ESRI, and Ben Kolkman, Edina Realty realtor/ nursing student, are like a lot of married couples. Now that they have a child, four-yearold son Kane, their private dates are far and few between, typically consisting of dinner out, and a movie if they’re lucky. Megan is very active and works out at The Firm in Minneapolis, taking weekly spin and yoga classes from lululemon ambassador Laura Robertson. Ben, on the other hand, doesn’t have a normal fitness routine and jokes he’s naturally lucky to have a trim body. So the couple doesn’t get to spend a lot of time together doing fit activities.
On our couple: Megan Rise & Shine Jacket – Seamsealed and made with Glyde Ultra material to protect against splashes of mud and rain. Unzip the front vents for added airflow. Adjust the fit and help block out the wind with the drawcord in the hem. Studio Crop Pant – Made with Swift material which is wicking, quickdrying, lightweight, breathable and has a two-way stretch. Stretch drawcord in hem allows for pant adjustability.
An active date was just what the couple needed. The Kolkmans were invited to attend a SkyRobics™ class at Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park in Plymouth, MN. They accepted.
Cool Racerback Tank – Made with lightweight luon light fabric. Tight fitting body is great for layering and flat seams are chaferesistant and provide comfort.
“This date was fun because we don’t usually get to work out any more together now that we have Kane,” said Megan. “And I was pleasantly surprised to get my heart rate up and break a sweat.” SkyRobics is a fun way to get fit in a unique environment. Sky Zone general manager, Miles Marsh, says SkyRobics is “the most fun you’ll ever have burning 1,000 calories.” From watching on the sidelines, we saw how class members were breaking a sweat while working all areas of their bodies. In addition to bouncing, which works the core, students did a series of running across trampolines, push-ups, squats, crunches and planks – some made extra challenging when their partner bounced on the same trampoline during the activity. Megan thought the clothing she picked was perfect for the activity. “I love lululemon apparel. The tank was supportive in all the right areas. Since I was doing a lot of bouncing, it didn’t ride up off my waist like a lot of other exercise shirts do,” she said. And she was pleased that the ¾ length pant protected her legs from potential burns on the trampoline surface. Ben was very happy with his lululemon clothing selections as well. The shirt was excellent at wicking away moisture, and the shorts were comfortable and allowed for the various highintensity movements on the trampolines.
“Skyrobics is appropriate for any fitness level,” said Miles. “NASA has done research that suggests trampoline exercise is good for you on the cellular level.” The class of more than 25 consisted of adults of all ages and body types – many of whom are regulars to this fun, innovative approach to fitness. “I like that Sky Zone is very family-friendly and open to all types of people,” said Ben. “Unlike other gyms, I don’t feel like I have to be an Adonis to work out here.” Throughout the date, the Kolkmans seemed to be enjoying themselves on the trampolines, even performing some unique jumps and poses for each other while flying more than five feet in the air. We feel the mission of helping the couple spark some new dating ideas was accomplished. Considering a Sky Zone class? For class times visit www.skyzone.com/minneapolis. Reservations are recommended as SkyRobics classes fill up quickly.
BEN 5 Year Basic T – Made with Vitsea fabric which is soft and breathable. Added LYCRA fibre means this shirt will stretch but won’t stretch out. Chafe resistant flat seams. Kahuna Short – Woven stretch fabric allows for ease of movement and has an 11-inch inseam. Pockets are lined with moisture-wicking Circle Mesh.

Bradley Traynor and Jamie Neldner
The staff at lululemon were great to work with. Even when we had to do some exchanges, they were genuine people who seemed to care.
Date Location: Vertical Endeavors Indoor Rock Climbing Facility, Minneapolis For adventure date number two, we seemed to have picked the perfect couple. Bradley Traynor, myTalk 107.1 daytime radio host, and Jamie Neldner, team lead with Minneapolis Parks, admit they’re big fans of The Shops at West End. “The West End is our movie place,” said Bradley. “We also love Rojo; I’m obsessed with their burger! And I’m obsessed with the Rainbow Foods even though it’s not close to anywhere we hang out.” Needless to say, since these two South Minneapolis residents are fitness fanatics, they are also very fond of lululemon. “We love lulu. Jamie’s a particular fan,” laughed Bradley. “He received lululemon clothing for Christmas. In fact, the past two Christmases.” Bradley and Jamie met four years ago in a step aerobics class at their gym. In the beginning of their relationship, the couple said they used to go on a lot of running dates. Now their outings are more geared toward culinary adventures. They love to try new restaurants. They also enjoy live theater and other cultural events. While they’re no strangers to fitness, we thought getting them out of their spin and yoga comfort zone might be a great test for them. On a snowy night in March we met Bradley and Jamie, lululemon gear in tow, at Vertical Endeavors Indoor Rock Climbing Facility in Minneapolis. VE climbing instructor Tiffany Paino helped the new climbers understand the techniques of the sport. “I like to start out by saying what every experienced climber says about the activity, it’s inherently dangerous,” said Tiffany. She then went on to explain the thorough safety procedures and the different types of climbing

Jamie Neldner the gym offers. After getting our couple suited up in their climbing harnesses and shoes, Tiffany began with a tour of the 10,500 square foot facility. From the looks on the faces of our brave gents, they were questioning what they got themselves into. “I’m actually developing a fear of heights,” exclaimed Bradley as he looked up at the 60-foot faux rock wall. Tiffany led our couple to a smaller auto belay wall. Auto belay allows climbers to climb alone with the assistance of a self-controlled counter weight system. Like pros, the two scaled the wall, reaching nearly 2/3 up the wall before easing themselves back to solid ground. The group moved on to a larger wall, this time belayed by Tiffany. Jamie reached a height of around 25 feet and was happy to come down. Always competitive, Bradley surpassed that by 10 additional feet before declaring he was ready to return to the floor. After learning the ropes, so to speak, the two were on their own to do some more climbing. A bit apprehensive without Tiffany’s help, they managed to climb a few more walls. “It feels weird not having Tiffany

here to reassure us,” laughed Jamie. “She was great. Very patient.” After a few more climbs, the guys were ready to call it a night. The guys thought the lululemon clothing was perfect for the activity. It was supportive in all the right places and breathed well. The material wicked moisture and was comfortable. As a challenging physical workout, Bradley and Jamie said the experience was great, and they could definitely feel the burn in their forearms and
shoulders. Tiffany explained that a lot of people use Vertical Endeavors as their main fitness gym. She explained that climbing builds a lot of lean muscle, much the same way as Pilates does. Tiffany also said that their facility has a lot of regular climbers that form a close-knit community. Bradley and Jamie compared it to their gym as well. They said they have a lot of friends there and it’s a very family-like environment. This goes to show you that being

“The staff at lululemon were great to work with,” said Jamie. “Even when we had to do some exchanges, they were genuine people who seemed to care.” And as far as the opportunity, the couple was more than appreciative. “Thanks for getting us to try something that didn’t involve food,” said Bradley. As far as fitness goes though, they’re typically on their own. Wendy works out five or six days a week at a gym near their home. She likes to mix up her routine with yoga, HIIT and spin classes. Coincidentally, she also took a SkyRobics class at SkyZone in Plymouth.
Astro Pant – Made with luon fabric which is breathable and has four-way stretch to move with you through your workout. Wear the waistband as is for a high rise or roll down for a low rise. Color: Black.

So, to mix up their dating life, we took the couple out for a physical date to Xelias Aerial Arts Studio in Northeast Minneapolis. Immediately, we were greeted by owner Meg Elias-Emery and instructor Jim Domenick. After a brief introduction to the space, Jim took the couple into the gym and put them right to work.

Wendy and Robert Mateega Date Location: Xelias Aerial Arts Studio, Minneapolis Wendy and Robert Mateega laughed when they were invited to try an aerial arts class. Running away with the circus was never really an aspiration for either of them, but they were willing to give it a try. Wendy, a director of finance at OptumHealth, and Robert, a senior bridge engineer at HDR Engineering, lead busy lives. Their careers and two active children, involved in sports and school activities, keep them always on the go. They do make time for dates, however. A typical date for the Mateegas? Dinner and drinks out with friends. “We seem to fall into the same date night pattern many couples

Jim gave the couple a brief overview of the program, which is based on strength and flexibility using aerial equipment. A standard class consists of a warm-up, working on the static trapeze, climbing the rope or fabric, and core conditioning at the end. For their private class, Wendy and Robert learned a couple of maneuvers on the static trapeze as well as on the fabrics. They quickly learned how challenging aerial arts really are. “We could definitely feel how much strength was needed in our hands and forearms to balance our weight,” said Wendy. “Professional aerialists always make it look so effortless. Kudos to them.” Aerial arts is as much about amazing physical strength as it is being visually stunning. It is a true workout for the full body. “Not only do students learn techniques in class, but they also take away a strong base in core strengthening and flexibility that they can do at home,” said Meg. Meg says a couple taking a class isn’t new to Xelias. “Oftentimes, a female student will tell her significant other

about the fun and challenges in class,” said Meg. “Then the significant other signs up for the class too only to discover that it is, in fact, challenging as well as a lot of fun.” Wendy and Robert were both pleased with their selections from lululemon. Once again, the fit, overall support, and the fabric wicking qualities were common themes used by the couple to describe their garments. “I’ve worn lululemon for a long time. It just feels good,” said Wendy.
“I’ve not worn lululemon before,” added Robert. “But I won’t be saying that again.” The class opened up the couple’s eyes to new and exciting ways to connect with each other while getting a thorough workout. They felt that an aerial class is a great way to learn new skills while having fun in the process. We were curious if any students had made love connections in a Xelias aerial class. Meg said she doesn’t know of any made at the studio, but she says many long-lasting friendships have been formed.
“No one has begun dating to our knowledge. However, I met my husband Sean while performing in Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus,” Meg was quick to point out. “So anything’s possible.” When the class was over, our couple left Xelias with a renewed sense of accomplishment. “It was great,” quipped Robert. “How many other spouses can say they were trapeze artists together?” Good question indeed, Robert. We’re sure not many can.
For details on classes at Xelias, visit their website at www.watchhumansfly.com. Alas, our dates are over. In the end, our three couples truly seemed to enjoy their active outings. We were glad to be part of the experiences. We encourage you to try a unique adventure date of your own. Who knows, it could reignite a spark in your relationship. Merriam-Webster defines community as “a unified body of individuals: as the people with common interests living in a particular area.” Communities can be defined all sorts of ways – neighborhoods, religious institutions, common interest groups and charitable causes. The Shops at West End is proud of its commitment to community. Here are some of the ways West End merchants and employees give back to local communities to help the greater good of society.
Apricot Lane Boutique 3Strands Bracelets Apricot Lane Boutique’s cause is to fight against sex trafficking around the world. One way they’re doing that is through 3Strands. 3Strands was created to support organizations already engaged in the fight against sex trafficking. Apricot Lane carries a wide variety of 3Strands bracelets that are made to purposefully remind the wearer of the trafficking survivor who made it. The three pieces of cord comprising the bracelet symbolize the freedom, love and empowerment these women experience, braided together and not easily broken. The incorporation of a single red string, barely visible inside the center of each bracelet, illustrates the souls of these women and how they are practically invisible to those who have bought and sold them in the past. Every bracelet displays one fragile, red seed from the pods of sandalwood trees, native to Cambodia. As each 3Strands bracelet is made by hand, with love, the women incorporate the red sandalwood seed in the design reminding them of their beauty within as they proudly sign their name to each bracelet. Visit 3StrandsGlobal.com for more of the 3Strands story.

The Bummer of Bug Bites With summer travel, camping trips and cabin excursions come bug bites. While these visits by insect friends are hard to avoid, they’re typically easy to manage. Khashayar Memari, Rainbow pharmacy manager, explains what you can do about bug bites so you can get on with your day: Bug bites start a cascade of allergic reactions in the body that can be controlled by overthe-counter or prescription medicines. The commonly used over-the-counter products that may be used to alleviate bug bites are hydrocortisonecontaining topical products and diphenhydraminecontaining topical and oral products. These over-thecounter medicines reduce the inflammation and itching associated with bug bites in the mild to moderate bite conditions. For more severe bug bite reactions the patient should be referred to an ER or their medical doctor or dermatologist.
