Last month’s International Design & Architecture A w a r d s C e r e m o n y, was as glittering and exciting as ever. This is the one event we keep at its permanent home in London and this year we returned to The Dorchester Ballroom after four years away for a wonderful evening. It is truly inspiring to see, meet and spend time with so many eminent designers and architects, who had travelled from all corners of the globe to join us on this evening. More than 46,000 of you voted over

a four week period and the competition, though very close in certain categories, was fierce and fair.

Over the course of the next few months we will take a closer look at these winning design schemes, for now we step inside the first group of projects and residential properties, all very different in style, size and scope.

Their design styles reflect in part their cultural and geographical location and for this reason we think they are vastly interesting and varied. We do hope you think this too. Well they are after all ‘your winners’ selected by you.

“ The entire property was designed to evoke a sense of history including the arrival sequence, hierarchy of scale in the architectural elements, and the use of traditional materials and historically functional architectural features. ”

Celebrating New England architecture’s history, this luxury residence is set in the old whaling port of Edgartown, Massachusetts.

The objective of this project was to use historically motivated architecture to create a new home that looks as though it has stood the test of time, rooted in its site and appropriate in scale with its surroundings.

Exclusively designed by Patrick Ahearn Architects, this heritage influenced project was recognised at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016. The property claimed the Residential £10million plus (Property Value) Award.

Dating back to the late 1800s, gambrel cottages have dotted the shoreline of New England and over time, as families expanded and prospered, the cottages grew and accessory buildings were added to create a larger program including boathouses, carriage houses and outbuildings.

Approaching the property along a cobblestone ribbon driveway, it culminates to a large entry court, symmetrically aligned with the front facade and portico, creating a formal and unforgettable sense of arrival.

The meticulously manicured plantings blend natural and controlled influences to provide a seamless indoor-outdoor transition.

The home-owners, a couple with three grown children, wanted multiple outdoor living spaces to entertain guests, so they can host their friends on one side of the house while their children can host their friends on the other side. There are a total of four outdoor spaces on the first floor allowing groups of all sizes to have unique and separate experiences, all while enjoying the same beautiful ocean views.

On the North side of the house is a covered porch, with an outdoor fireplace, connected to a party room perfect for hosting larger dinner and cocktail parties. The disappearing Nano doors between the porch and the party room create an open flow of space from indoor to outdoor ideal for entertaining. The design team incorporated a lot of windows in the party room to make it feel like it was a porch that became enclosed over time, while the open air porch is truly open air.

the party room giving a seamless transition.

The covered porch proceeds to step down onto an intimate bluestone terrace area, in lieu of grass, creating a three tiered series of spaces to entertain within one significant outdoor living area.

On the Southern side of the house and you will find the grown children entertaining their friends in the larger pool area. The pool area was strategically tucked away to create an intimate experience separate from other possible co-existing forms of entertaining and to preserve privacy from passing boat traffic in Edgartown Harbor; however, the area maintains beautiful ocean views and aligns perfectly with the sun. Guests can spend all day outside with the amenities this area offers including the pool, hot tub, outdoor grille, dining area, and a pool cabana featuring an indoor fireplace. Bluestone is carried from the pool terrace into the pool cabana to create another indoor/outdoor experience.

While the major entertaining spaces foster more significant social activity, family members and guests alike can take a break in the shade. The central covered porch offers a more relaxing, quiet setting with rocking chairs perfect for smaller groups or summer reading. Adjacent, there is a screened-in porch providing the opportunity to enjoy the outside during inclement weather.

One of the design team’s favourite key aspects of this project is how they recreated the “implied history” and hierarchical scale for newly constructed structures.

The main house established the dominant element, the carriage house wing served as the secondary element, and the cabana as the third element. Hidden from view while facing the front facade, the carriage house is connected to the main home by a breezeway which implies that the two buildings were once independent from each other.

The gambrel architecture was a natural choice along the coastline, partly due to the 26’ height restriction but also allows the maximum square footage on the second floor while maintaining a lower building height thus reducing the potential over massing in scale. Uniformly designed in the gambrel shingle style, the grand seaside residence is intimate in scale and

is organised by the implied symmetry that celebrates the long views to the water.

The past is echoed through the use of traditional materials including weathered cedar shingles, stone veneered foundations and chimneys, and New England bluestone terraces and fieldstone walls. Equally as significant are the additions of a widow’s walk and oversailing eaves despite the advancements in technology. Both architectural elements were previously considered a fundamental component in New England architecture along the coast; widow’s walks were installed to provide a sea captain’s wife with an elevated lookout to watch for the return of her husband and oversailing eaves were crucial during foul weather prior to the invention of gutters. Today, they serve to aesthetically enhance the architectural language and to pay tribute to celebrate the past. Similarly, despite the significant advancements in energy efficiency over the past few decades, the windows are historically accurate with muntins separating the double panes, adorned with a traditional framework of mullions, and thick historic sills.

The interior finishes recall the grand shingle style homes of the turn of the last century, yet live in a more casual way as people wish to celebrate island life today. This is evidenced particularly by the extensive use of full height millwork panelling and antique oak reclaimed flooring. Architectural elements – beadboard, traditional panelling, strongly cased door frames, and wide cased wooden beams - were used to introduce human scale. The water-facing facade of the home is bathed in unobscured daylight, which is made possible by fully glazed walls offering breathtaking views to the water.

As the sun sets, chandeliers and pendants provide intimate and warm light, while grounding the primary gathering spaces.

The entire property was designed to evoke a sense of history including the arrival sequence, hierarchy of scale in the architectural elements, and the use of traditional materials and historically functional architectural features. All of the elements of a formal historic home are present however they are dressed down to convey a quiet sense of luxury with an effortless and natural sophistication.

Set in the centre of the vibrant city of Amsterdam, this stunning historical building - a former language school from the seventies - has been magnificently transformed into a luxurious family home by restoring, recovering and redesigning the entire building.

Rewarded at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016, Roelfien Vos Interior Design & Architecture claimed the Living Space Global Award with this city centre residence.

The brief was to bring this three storey building back to it’s former glory and create a home for a family with three children to live in. It was important to the client that in meeting the requirements of modernday living, the history of the building be respected. The building had previously been remodelled incorporating extensions and lowered ceilings to be equipped for office use. A key element of the project was to re-establish the traditional features of the building by revealing the high ceilings, original walls and renovating the extension.

After removing the existing furnishings and fittings, the design team were inspired by the authentic ceilings and original colours. A study of historical colour schemes together with a whole new layout design then ensued.

The stunning hallway features a grand staircase with the original wooden steps carefully restored and stands out as a wonderful master piece on entering this home. The walls in the hallway and landing areas are painted in an opulent blue resembling the original blue tones used in times gone by. Large modern floor tiles in the hallway provide an impressive contrast to the classical staircase.

The former offices on the ground floor were transformed into three formal rooms.

During the restoration of what would become the main reception room, tones of green, gold, purple and ochre were revealed influencing the colour scheme used for walls, furniture and soft furnishings. Through interpreting these original colours into more contemporary tones and incorporating modern shapes an inviting atmosphere has been created where old and new go hand in hand.

Another of these rooms has been converted into a vibrant yet tranquil family room, the original features complemented by exotic prints, dark colours and cosy orange accents.

A private hideaway where the children can watch TV. A further requirement of the project was for the kitchen space to have a contemporary feel whilst providing comfort and functionality. To achieve the wishes of the owners for this area, an extension was added

to the back of the house offering a modern and fresh feel without detracting from the history of the original structure.

An open plan kitchen and spacious dining area were designed with clean crisp lines and a warm transitional style all whilst staying practical. The streamlined kitchen units in dark wood are contrasted by beautiful hand painted wallpaper. The area flows through to the dining area bathed in natural light with a peaceful view of the spacious town garden and tranquil water areas.

Two former classrooms on the first floor were renovated to encompass a wellness area with steam room, sauna, bathtub, double vanity and shower/sun area. Jura Grau stone combined with natural colours and materials provide a balanced and harmonious atmosphere. The perfect place to relax and unwind.

The Master Suite was designed together with a walk-in closet in black wood, complimented by crème and nude tones. The restored wooden floor and the revealed ceilings emphasize the history of the house.

Speaking about the project, Roelfien explained that the design incorporated modern-day comforts whilst bringing history back to life and said that “The client was very happy with their new family home in a historical building, without the feeling of living in a museum.”

Interior designer Roelfien Vos works independently in both the private and commercial sectors. Until 1986 she lived in Germany, where she completed her education. After gaining experience in a variety of commercial positions, she started her career in 1999 as an independent Interior Designer. In 2010 she launched her eponymous design company as owner and founder of Roelfien Vos Interior Design.

Roelfien says she finds inspiration at international design fairs and also during the many journeys she makes in the course of her work. Her style is an eclectic mix of contemporary design, global finds and custom-designed creations with a close attention to detail.

As a stunning and elegant residence with 12,000 square feet set over 9-storeys, Kensington Townhouse incorporates not only the highest quality artisanal craftsmanship but also features all the practical elements of a family home. Combining contemporary design, luxurious materials and modern technology, Taylor Howes have skilfully integrated the classical architectural features of the townhouse into present day functionality.

Kensington Townhouse was a winning project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016, claiming the Residential £20 million Plus (Project Value) Award at the event on 2nd September in London.

“ The modern day elements of this home have been located in the more contemporary basement, so as to not draw attention away from the grandeur of the original house. ”

The brief for this project was to retain and restore the original features of the Grade II listed building whilst adapting the existing layouts to suit the clients requirements.

Taylor Howes worked very closely with the M&E team to ensure that the property featured all of the elements associated with a modern redesign whilst at the same time remained within the restrictions and limitations of a listed property.

Representing Taylor Howes, Poppy Everett told design et al, “The Taylor Howes team were honoured to have the opportunity to restore such a beautiful building back to its former glory in a way that is incredibly luxurious but at the same time a fully functioning family house. The team had a wonderful working relationship with the client and his family, which made the project a very enjoyable process from start to finish, particularly as the client valued the ideas that the team brought to the table and appreciated the importance of their role in the successful restoration of his new home.

It is the success of projects such as this that provide Taylor Howes with clients that return to use their services again and again - as is the case with this client”.

To the ground floor of this exceptional family home there is a formal living room where the intricately detailed listed cornicing, frieze and fireplace have been lovingly restored.

Whilst the family themselves did not require a fully functioning kitchen, Taylor Howes installed a ‘tea and toast’ kitchen in the family dining room behind built-in mirrored cabinet doors that give the impression of a freestanding unit.

A master suite with bedroom, bathroom and his/her dressing rooms is located on the first floor. In the master bedroom, where partitions were deemed a challenge, due to the limitations placed around the adapting of the listed cornicing, the team introduced glass panels that were cut to fit flush around the detailed cornice without the requirement of any structural adaptations. The result is a unique design that adds elements of contemporary design, juxtaposed against the traditional original features.

The children’s bedrooms and guest suites fill the upper floors of this superior townhouse.

Throughout, sophisticated bespoke furniture, luxurious rugs and eye-catching lighting accentuate the striking colour palette, creating the perfect blend of past and present, of historical and contemporary living.

The modern day elements of this home have been located in the more contemporary basement, so as to not draw attention away from the grandeur of the original house. The double storey basement features a swimming pool, spa, cinema room, sitting room and industrial kitchen for the kitchen staff to prepare meals in.

The designers were also required to design and furnish the adjoining mews house into a practical space that could be used as the living quarters for the client’s staff.

Taylor Howes believe The Awards are a brilliant reflection of the passion, commitment and hard work of their team, as well as being a great way in which to provide their clients with a further confidence that they are an esteemed and respected studio.

Speaking about the influence of the ID&A Awards, Poppy added, “We are very strong believers in the importance of taking a step back and reflecting on the work that we have completed and congratulating ourselves on our achievements – something that is often easier said than done! To receive recognition from well-respected peers within the industry is testament to the hard work that the team puts in and allows them to take a moment to consider their accomplishments rather than moving straight onto the next project.”

Chic and characterful – a rare gem in London Mayfair Townhouse, London by Katharine Pooley Winner at the International Design and Architecture Awards 2016 Design et al - Global Award

This Grade II listed property in the heart of London’s Mayfair has been transformed into a modern-day family residence. Katharine Pooley and her design team were briefed with the complete renovation of this 11,000 square feet former office block. In particular, the client wanted the restoration and reinstatement of the architectural detailing, achieved sensitively, but with a contemporary finish overall.

Rewarded at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016, Katharine Pooley claimed the Design et al – Global Award at the event on the 2nd September in London.

As a listed property, the brief stated that it was important for the design to respect the classic, period detailing but to also be workable as a family residence. Pooley was therefore inspired to use a fresh, light palette and contemporary furniture and accessories in order to complement the traditional detailing.

“ The redesign included extensive building works and project management with features including a glass lift shaft, several bespoke chandeliers, hand painted and embroidered wallpapers and complete designs for all spaces... ”

This rare gem of a property in the centre of Mayfair consists of 7 floors of property, including a basement and a roof terrace. The redesign included extensive building works and project management with features including a glass lift shaft, several bespoke chandeliers, hand painted and embroidered wallpapers and complete designs for all spaces, including 7 bathrooms and a white onyx spa.

The glass lift shaft running through the six floors of the property, elegantly connects the floors with a skylight at the top which beautifully floods the period staircase with natural light. The design works so well because it seamlessly blends a modern, contemporary finish with the traditional, classic architectural details of this Grade II listed building.

The client also had an interest in one off, collectable pieces so the designer team also sourced bespoke lighting, sculptures and artwork such as the Niamh Barry sculpture and the huge ombre crystal chandelier undulating through the entrance hall to truly bring the project together. Hand painted cherry blossom Chinoiserie wallpaper in the dining room picked out the exact hue of a blue agate stone centred in an inlaid marquetry star burst on the dining table; an exceptional piece in terms of both craftsmanship and originality.

In the main drawing room Lapis Scagliola coffee tables were commissioned to Katharine’s design and beautifully simple and understated Quartz crystal chandeliers softly light the detailed mouldings on the listed ceiling above.

In a ground floor reception room Grade ll listed dark oak panelling was completely refurbished and juxtaposed with a stunning geometric chandelier, wall lights

and monochromatic fabrics. A particular favourite in this room were the staggered black shagreen hexagonal tables designed by Pooley herself.

The brief also called for the extension of habitable space to add value to the property, this was achieved with the addition of a roof terrace, ground floor terrace and an additional liveable space to the basement.

Included in this space was a gym, spa and private treatment rooms all clad in white onyx, Thassos marble and bleached Scandinavian timbers. This gave the homeowner a free space to relax and feel as if they were elsewhere than home to escape from reality.

This was an important returning client for Katharine Pooley who is short on time and spends a great deal of time abroad, therefore asked that the design team handle the entire redevelopment on their behalf. The entire property was designed and executed from start to finish by a team of in house project managers, interior architects, interior designers, landscape designers and stylists.

A Timeless Sanctuary within a Landmark Pied-Ă -Terre House on Ussishkin St. by Annette Frommer

This private listed landmark property located in Jerusalem, was carefully transformed into a Pied-à-Terre for an American family, who spend their holidays in this very special neighbourhood.

Designed in totality by Annette Frommer Interior Design Studio, the classically designed master bathroom in this remarkable historical house was rewarded at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016.

Bathrooms are more than just a functional space in our homes, they are in modern day society, a place in which we can relax and rejuvenate our souls and spirits. It was imperative therefore that a successful design scheme should achieve the same.

Annette Frommer’s award winning project has achieved this aim by creating a bathroom which combines timeless elegance with supreme functionality.

“ The use of predominantly white marble, laced with delicate grey fissures creates a pervading sense of light within the room, which feels grand, yet bright and modern at the same time. ”

In this bathroom the walls and floor are clad with striking book matched Statuario marble slabs. Their natural symmetry lending an elegant and artistic aspect to the space. The bathroom was completed with traditional style chrome fittings by Lefroy Brooks, which complement the overall look of the room, and are in-keeping with the style of the entire property.

The same stone is again used for the mouldings of the sizeable bath, as well as the frames of the shower door and the windows, creating a calming consistency to the overall scheme. The design is one of luxurious, but simple, sophistication, which lets the natural beauty of the materials take centre stage.

The use of predominantly white marble, laced with delicate grey fissures creates a pervading sense of light within the room, which feels grand, yet bright and modern at the same time.

The great advantage of a high-ceiling enabling the studio to hang a traditional Andromeda chandelier of white Murano glass, that with its simple and exquisite design, produces an airy ethereal light.

Since the property is a landmark with very strict preservation, prescribed by the

Municipality, no changes could be made on the existing exterior. The only new addition that was permitted was in the living room; the whole room now enclosed by ultra-modern, large sliding windows, accentuating the contrast between old and new. The main entrance includes original wrought iron doors, and marble floors by Bottocino Classico. Throughout the house the large doorways are clad in stone, bringing symmetry to the rooms.

The designer’s philosophy is to constantly strive for harmony and beauty, achieving remarkable interiors, with a luxurious ambience and subtle sumptuousness.

As a converted Victorian bakery on Parkgate Road – the heart of Battersea Creative District – Parkgate House retains the original charm of the historic Victorian building while introducing contemporary living inside. The mission for the design was to create the finest living space possible, combined with the ultimate in contemporary design for modern living and comfort with traditional craftsmanship.

Future proofing features such as underfloor heating throughout, built-in sound, air conditioning and recessed LED lighting were designed to be controlled by tablet or mobile devices for ease and comfort. De-misting glass in the bathrooms and a bottomfilling bath took the brief to new heights of convenience. The design is for living, to focus on peace and expediency where it may not have been considered possible previously.

The two-bedroom apartments comprising The Heritage Collection at Parkgate House were the second and final phase of the transformation. Exclusively designed by renowned London developers Banda Property, The Heritage Collection at Parkgate House was winning project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016. The property claimed the Residential Development Award at the event on 2nd September in London.

The history of the building was integral to the design and during early works, the original bakery flooring was uncovered which led Banda to commission the exact replica stunning oak chevron flooring.

These apartments were briefed to be the showcase element of the Parkgate House renovation. The design was to present lateral living on a supreme level, 2,000 sq ft of open plan living space and 500 sq ft for the bathrooms and master bedroom space each.

It was to create a sleek, highly functional, highly luxurious and yet understated living environment reflecting its location.

Leading all interior design aspects for The Heritage Collection with Banda’s inimitable design acumen was Creative Director, Rebecca Wakefield, who carefully curated a collective of artisans and experts in their respective design fields, to ensure superior quality finishes with well thought out spaces for supreme living and entertaining.

A sheer sense of space was offered by vast open plan living areas and unusually tall (3.3m) ceiling heights with beautifully restored, expansive arched windows affording each apartment with a virtually uninterrupted, dual aspect providing maximum space and light.

Within these Cityspace apartments neutral tones and natural textured materials were used to create a classic feel juxtaposed with the clean lines of a modern lifestyle.

The Moroccan inspired wall plastering was purposed to create a strong sense of warmth within the space.

The bio-ethanol fireplace that partitions the kitchen and living room replaces any thoughts of solid walls with fluidity of circulation through the space. Luxurious design and finishes were central to the design direction and the high quality Carrara marble, in large proportions, ensures this in both the kitchen and bathrooms.

A contemporary refurbishment of a fivestory, 10,000 square foot Grade-II listed family home, transforming the residence into an impressive and captivating space.

Exclusively designed by Carlisle Design Studio, The Boltons claimed the Residential £1-2.5million Award at The International Design & Architecture Awards 2016, in London.

The task for Carlisle Design Studio, who offer a bespoke personalised service specialising in truly unique design solutions, was to create a home suitable for entertaining, and also provide the owners with an environment where they could relax and feel at home.

The owners two beloved dogs were also considered in the design.

The colour palette is soothing and warm, filling any one coming in after a long day with a sense of contentment and serenity. Further down the hall, the sitting room boasts plush chairs to sit back in; sleek, yet comforting.

The same tone and texture is carried on through the full length curtains and rug. For this project, all hand tufted carpets and rugs are designed and supplied by Colbourns.

Relaxing with a book here, the dining room is just visible, designed exquisitely for family dinners or formal meals and larger gatherings.

Upstairs, the general rule that no bedroom is complete without an exceptional bathroom is surely followed. While the bedrooms are indeed stunning, the bathroom is notably magnificent. Within this white, mink and praline coloured room, a curved Art Deco reminiscent standalone bathtub resides next to a pearlescent vanity cabinet with single basin. This is artfully offset with vintage taps and an Art Deco inspired mirror, providing continuity in the details. A crystal chandelier floats above, dispersing light and dazzling over the specifically chosen snow white orchids as they stand in two waist height silver vases, showcasing sleek lines and reflecting sophistication.

The rest of the upstairs is set apart with differing colour tones, revealing a more masculine personality within. The property features a bar area, dressed sensually in warm, wood-like colours, a perfect complement to the golden nectar in the

finest spirit bottles and whiskey tumblers.

This gentleman’s hideaway exudes masculine power and intelligent charisma, making it stand out as a both a luxurious space for entertaining the closest of friends, and enjoying a private drink.

The precision of customisation and bespoke decor in this project is undeniably meticulous. Hand finished wall coverings, Italian marble, sumptuous fabrics and specialist surface finishes were all chosen to work specifically with each room’s palette.

Interior ID provided unique items of bespoke fitted cabinetry, while other pieces were designed to update the aesthetic of the house to one of transcendent elegance and luxury.

A purveyor of extravagant materials, Thomas James Furniture was chosen to supply some of the finest standalone cabinetry. Attention was lavished on the detailing of features from the intricate etching on the back face of a mirrored joinery panel to the curve of bespoke sequin decorations on a cushion.

The design included a few new additions such as a conservatory extension at the back of the house, giving the advantage opening up of the lower ground floor into a light and spacious area for casual dining and relaxing. Key features are the uniquely fitted light fixtures creating their own distinguishing lighting ambiance for each room, allowing the owners to step into a new world over every threshold. Another new feature installed during the renovation is the bespoke wine store, created next to the large family kitchen. The wine store is a meticulously thought out feature, designed so that each shelf is specialised for the specific type of wine. A centralised table was included to ensure the owners could take out each bottle, examine, study and of course taste them, to their hearts content.

Matthew Carlisle, Creative Director for Carlisle Design Studio spoke about this project, “My favourite aspect of this project has to be the refurbished Library, for many reasons, but in particular the finely detailed joinery. It utilises the great ceiling height perfectly and uses a rich, masculine palette of finishes.”

While The Boltons was completely transformed into a new luxury space, the personalised design gives the owners the feeling that it is still very much their home, where they can truly be themselves.

Modern Chinoiserie House, located in Singapore, is a glamorous residence that reflects the personality and heritage of the family that live within.

Awarded at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016, Design Intervention claimed the Kitchen over £100k Award at the event on the 2nd September in London.

Tasked with creating a home that encaptures the client’s cultural heritage whilst simultaneously providing a fun filled environment for a young family, Design Intervention have designed a home that expresses youthful vitality and provides an elegant backdrop for treasured family heirlooms, antiques and an extensive art collection.

Every element of this home has been carefully considered from the ceiling and floor patterns to the concise architectural mouldings, as well as the bespoke furnishings, rugs and lighting pieces to ensure a thoroughly cohesive look that resonates with a crisp, yet welcoming glamour.

“ The company’s mission is to enhance the lives of their clients by creating homes that are uniquely tailored to their lifestyle, aspirations and personalities. ”

The kitchen was designed to be the hub of the home. As stated by Founding Partner of Design Intervention, Nikki Hunt “This kitchen was my personal favourite of all the ones we worked on last year. It was designed for a family with four young children and a dad who was an avid cook”. As a space where the family intended to spend much of their time, it needed to be as beautiful as it was functional.

Nikki herself finds cooking can be quite therapeutic and appreciates the intimacy of entertaining at home. She explains that “this love of cooking and entertaining is reflected in our kitchen designs where aesthetics are never sacrificed for functionality. We design kitchens for cooking but of course with the Design Intervention panache”.

A vibrant blue heavily-veined granite was selected for the island top providing a showstopping focal point and a visual anchor to the space.

In addition to the polished steel and gold accents used in the rest of the home, a third metal element was introduced in the kitchen, combining copper, polished steel and gold tones for a thoroughly fresh and unique feel. A mosaic backsplash in blush tones accentuates the copper elements and the rose tones in the granite slab. The copper adds warmth to the space and a visual connection to the coral tones used in adjacent rooms. Trimming copper fronted doors in steel has allowed the designers to integrate stainless steel appliances

seamlessly into the design. Gold hardware keeps the look glamorous, linking the kitchen with the rest of the home.

The Banquette is one of the feature points in this kitchen, a relaxed, family-friendly area, it has been set into the back corner of the room. It is the most used area of this home, a perfect corner for the family to enjoy a relaxed meal together or for the children to do homework.

The designers chose a teal blue leather, that is easy to wipe clean. The colour is reflected in many of the art pieces. White button detail adds a crispness and echoes the buttoned dining chairs in the formal dining areas. Side tables at either end of the banquette light up to reveal valuable storage. They conceal charging stations for electrical devices.

The unique mosaic design of the table base is a continuation of the patterns used in the entrance of the house for a cohesive feel between the open plan spaces. The marble octagonal table top mirrors the use of this shape in the living & formal dining areas, visually integrating the spaces and repeating the use of an eight-sided shape, bringing luck into the heart of the home.

Design Intervention is an International Design Studio based in Singapore, helmed by partners, Nikki Hunt and Andrea Savage. They believe that good design improves quality of life, affects mood and invokes a sense of well being. The company’s mission is to enhance the lives of their clients by creating homes that are uniquely tailored to their lifestyle, aspirations and personalities.

The team of 24 is made up of 12 different nationalities – each bringing their own unique experience to the Design Intervention team ensuring projects resonate a global prospective. At Design Intervention, they recognize that design, just like love, is a subjective concept.

Completed in April 2015, Holm Oak, is a new uniquely built ‘Arts & Crafts’ style country house, which marries together a traditional façade, with a contemporary, luxurious and sumptuous interior. Set in extensive grounds and manicured lawns, it’s an imposing picture, in all the best ways.

Exclusively designed by developer Oakeve Interiors, Holm Oak was recognised at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016. The property claimed the Residential £2.5 – 5million (Property Value) Award.

Holm Oak was originally intended to be a speculative development, but as the client purchased the house ‘off plan’, it became a client-driven project with their specific brief driving the scheme. The client made it clear that they wanted to buy into an ‘aspirational lifestyle’ therefore Oakeve were tasked with creating a fabulous, luxurious and opulent new turnkey show home.

Sympathetic to the ‘Arts and Crafts’ homes archetypal of the Buckinghamshire area Holm Oak resides in, the property features traditional external elevations contrasted with a very luxurious contemporary interior design, providing a very privileged quality of life.

“ Oakeve took great care and attention during the spatial planning phase to optimise space and maintain a light, airy atmosphere; important, considering the oversized statement kitchen island. ”

Natural light and spaciousness were cornerstones of the project. Holm Oak is north-east facing to the rear, meaning that the back entertaining rooms and kitchen could potentially suffer from poor light after midday. To avoid this many interior design solutions were included, as well as ample windows, roof lanterns, and extensive bifold doors, maximizing all available natural light. The house also features the best in technology to help with this: Lutron mood lighting works with Sonos multi-room audio to create enviable environments for guests and parties within the house’s sumptuous and extensive entertaining spaces.

The flow of the house enables the residents to move seamlessly between spaces; this was an implemented design solution, which was given significant importance. Porcelanosa tiling and deep, fluffy carpets in neutral tones throughout help to create this airy continuity.

Set at the heart of this beautiful home, Oakeve Interiors designed a lavish living space that aimed to meet the client’s brief to achieve ‘one large entertaining space’ between The Drawing Room, Bar Area and Dining Room. Continuous interior decor and colour palettes sweeping through these rooms helped to create the aspirational and opulent finish desired; subtle taupes interjected with striking amethysts and a few unique and bespoke items of furniture make this design stand out. Sycamore veneered furniture sourced from Italy was complemented by luxurious purple velvet armchairs and deep, cosseting sofas, all manufactured in Britain. The Casamance, Effervescence wall covering was chosen to provide an opulent, reflective texture and was utilized on opposite walls of the conjoined Drawing and Dining Room to ensure light from the French doors and bay

window was reflected, accentuating light and spaciousness.

The drapes and blinds, from Osborne & Little, are a two-tone satin damask with a silky appearance. Pelmets were utilised to soften the window treatments and add a traditional elegance and indulgence to the room.

Atmospheric lighting was critical within the design for this entertaining space, so Lutron Lighting was used as well as Porta Romana Crystal Strata lamps with rectangular amethyst velvet shades, chosen for their delicate design and luxurious finish. From a design view, these also complement the soft limestone fireplace and create a visually striking feature upon entry.

Innovative storage methods were used such as creating oak panelled ‘secret’ cupboards providing practical storage solutions in a bespoke and unobtrusive manner so as not to compromise on living accommodation.

This can be seen in various places, notably within the unique ‘ying yang’ centre island in the kitchen. This feature is a favourite of the designers’, and ensures a ‘wow factor’ and focal point for the scheme.

Oakeve Interiors design and install their own brand of bespoke kitchen cabinetry and indeed no expense was spared here. A high gloss, lacquered Sabbia finish was specified, providing an effective light reflecting surface, further enhanced by the recessed uplighting, creating a bright, contemporary, luxurious atmosphere. The team even managed to procure an Ebano display cabinet and dresser with a Macassar veneer and black mock croc detailing, providing texture and that touch of glamour, alongside black mock croc base units for ample storage. The large amount of textured silestone and walnut work surface provides an indulgent marriage of materials, complemented by luscious velvet breakfast bar stools.

Oakeve took great care and attention during the spatial planning phase to optimise space and maintain a light, airy atmosphere; important, considering the oversized statement kitchen island. Practicality was also key, 900mm deep pan drawers were specified under the island countertops for ease of use. This island, by all means a box of wonders, also includes an integrated pop up TV and pop up S-box (housing USB and plug points) within the composite worktop, to ensure there is no change of material and clean, elegant lines are retained when not in use. Throughout the kitchen, electrical appliances are installed to a high specification and quality finish.

Oakeve Interiors Founder, Iona Newton explained that her most rewarding and favourite aspect of the entire project was when the client entered the Kitchen Area for the first time. Upon unveiling the finished project to the client, their immediate and powerful reaction was one of overwhelming delight, “we are simply over the moon, Oakeve have created the most luxurious kitchen and entertainment space, better than we could ever have imagined and it will indeed be the heart of our home.”

One Tower Bridge is a luxury 170 square metre lateral apartment inspired by the distinctly British character and charm of the Thames Walk. Exclusively designed by the internationally acclaimed Casa Forma, this new build was transformed into a chic and stylish residence perfect for entertaining.

Awarded at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016, Casa Forma claimed the Kitchen Over £50k Award with the property’s elegant yet functional kitchen, developed in collaboration with Rossana.

The client requested Casa Forma’s expertise on the design and implementation of the interior of this show apartment. When creating the scheme, Casa Forma’s main focus was on practicality and functionality, whilst at the same time ensuring the space would be rich with the best in bespoke elegance and luxury. The result is a sophisticated and timeless design; a comfortable family home with what is undeniably one of the best views in London.

A large living space features dark neutral tones in warm pralines and velvety chocolates, with hints of cream in two unique-looking leather stools. Colours are brought to life in the space with the addition of deep blue-purple cushions and throws. A marble-top coffee table sits like a jewel in the centre of the long, L-shaped couch and two elegant armchairs. This surface is an echo and perfectly balanced continuation of the marble floor in the entrance hall. Lamps are dotted about the room; soft lighting for reading and setting a gentle mood for conversing with friends.

Outside space in the heart of London is a much sought after luxury; though this apartment is not in possession of a garden, anyone staying here has the whole of London at their fingertips, with these world-class views every ready to be enjoyed.

The designers have created an integrated kitchen décor that works in direct harmony with the living and dining room areas, allowing the owner to entertain and relax in peace, regardless of, and of course with the added benefit of, the bustling city centre location.

Being an open plan space, the kitchen had to be elegant yet functional with the ability for everything to be directly stored away so as to avoid the space feeling cluttered. Wood panels offer a great solution to concealing the mess and make sure the space looks immaculate.

Streamlined kitchen units have been installed repeating the use of the decadent chocolate wood, this time coupled with marble counter-tops giving an elegant feel

to the space. The integration of state of the art appliances provides maximum cooking efficiency along with clever organisation creating a refined and practical workspace.

Spotlights beaming down from the overhead storage units and the sleek fan above the inset electric stove, gild the kitchen space, imbuing it with a golden quality. The artfully mottled mirror that clings to the far wall is the only thing to show any sign of age, and has the effect of bringing this dream-like kitchen into the present once more, as well as subtly elongating the space.

This mirror is part of the bespoke wall panelling installed especially to make the most of the magnificent views of Tower Bridge. Juxtaposing the otherwise dark interior colours, chocolates, pralines and deep indigos, the mirrors bring light into the space and will always serve magnificently in manipulating an ambiance in a party atmosphere.

Three sumptuously large en-suite bedrooms provide this property with enough space to host weekend guests or family. Dark wood panelling over most walls gives the apartment a distinctly retro feel; very 1960’s chic, in an entirely liveable ensemble. Though it’s not unusual these days for master bedrooms to feature open plan en suite bathrooms, it is perhaps less likely that the spacious bathtub will be constructed entirely from the same chocolate-toned wood that covers the walls.

Sublime in its elegance, the bathtub sits to the side of the bedroom, only steps away from a luxuriously large bed, and in the perfect position to enjoy the London cityscape beyond, while still maintaining privacy. The owner can relax here enjoying the view, or even a film on the the seamlessly inset, flat screen TV on the wall above.

Touches of greenery in graceful white flowers dotted about the room bring points of femininity to what could be perceived as a largely masculine room; although the overall ambiance of the interior is also very tropical – a little capsule of escapism in the heart of London.

Beautiful bespoke joinery and furniture used throughout the space reflects the design of the building. The unexpected yet sophisticated combination of palettes and materials used combine successfully with a functional layout solution; storage is sleekly hidden, built into the wall panelling, with inset horizontal alcoves for displaying photographs and artefacts, and the full length curtains which extend right from one end of the living room to the other, pull back to reveal all of central London and close to conceal this little haven from the world again. In every sense, this home truly is a hidden gem.

“I believe that you could liken the role of an Interior Designer to that of a film director. With our clients as the producers, we take their personal vision, be it classical, modern, contemporary, art deco or neoclassic, and synthesize this with all the other actors, from artisans, suppliers and trades, to create a bespoke design that narrates their personal story. ”

Surrounded by 66 acres of ecological forest, the Chinoiserie Villas are a private paradise isolated from the hustle and bustle of Beijing.

Each villa has been crafted to integrate with the natural beauty of its surroundings and create a sense of peace, harmony and calm. Combining the ultimate balance of East meets West architecture, smart home technology and modern amenities, the development is one of Beijing’s most luxurious urban family communities.

David Chang, Founder of David Chang Interior Design Associates, was born in Taipei. Educated both in the United States and Canada, he majored in Interior Design at California State University Long Beach and received an Honorary Interior Design degree at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Canada. He is currently undertaking post graduate courses at Harvard University in the study of green building community and sustainability issues.

These spacious, high ceiling, urban villas range from 500 to 2000 square meters and feature a private courtyard with swimming pool, poolside dining and entertainment casita.

Chang is deeply influenced by both Eastern and Western culture. He draws inspirations from essences of history and culture, as such his works are the embodiment of vitality and artistry. Moreover, to endow each design with unique signature soul to each design project, emphasis is placed on functionality and harmonious comfort in space.

Exclusively designed by internationally renowned David Chang Associates, Beijing Chinoiserie Villa type S3 was a winning project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016. The property claimed the Residential £10million plus (Project Value) Award at the event on the 2nd September 2016.

The villa has a total of five floors with great consideration made to complete functional spaces and thoroughfares. Detailed space planning reflects emphasis placed on the comfort and requirements of the future owner and represents the true meaning of bespoke design.

Multiple Western and Chinese elements and decoration details are utilised in the design.

These elements are shown throughout, with the Huizhou architectural arch details, the common carvings of stone pedestals that are shaped as the plum blossom, the imperial decoration of the dragon scales. Texture rich travertine stone, with its calming colour and elegant appearance, is used throughout the majority of the main areas.

Furthermore, the combination and mixed use of leather with brass, stone and wood, provide a diverse and luxurious elegance within the space. With the use of bespoke furniture company, Turri, the project was further complemented with the use of their furniture pieces that incorporated all the projects colours.

Beijing Chinoiserie Villa type S3’s interior uses simple neoclassical framework to build a spacious interior. Adding Chinese motifs and patterns as decorative details emphasises the contemporary yet traditional characteristics. Throughout the space, one can feel the true ambience and spirit of Chinese tradition.

Describing his designs from a different perspective, Chang said, “I believe that you could liken the role of an Interior Designer to that of a film director. With our clients as the producers, we take their personal vision, be it classical, modern, contemporary, art deco or neoclassic, and synthesize this with all the other actors, from artisans, suppliers and trades, to create a bespoke design that narrates their personal story. Designers should be like water, easily flowing and versatile enough to fit within any container.

Bespoke designs cannot be mass produced if they are to be informed by the Clients’ individual tastes, needs and influences.

This continuous dexterity of inspirations is the flame that keeps the passion for design burning.”

Chang has since created David Chang Design Associates International, which is a full service design company. The firm originated in Vancouver and later established offices in Guangzhou and Beijing to provide space planning, interior design and soft furnishing services for major real estate developers in China. Located in an iconic and grand mansion block in Bayswater, Elicyon undertook the refurbishment of this spectacular apartment with enviable views over Hyde Park. This project was to be a second home exuberating with an impressive boutique hotel quality.

Luxury interior design studio Elicyon have created an exquisite home finished to superlative standards.

Rewarded at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016, Elicyon claimed the City Space Award with this remarkable Bayswater Mansion Apartment.

The combination of breath-taking views and interiors dominated by a sophisticated, subtle colour palette of dove greys and sumptuous, soft metallic materials, make this four-bedroomed apartment a testimony to luxurious city living.

The brief was realised through an adept combination of sourcing the finest materials and designing bespoke furnishings to create a truly outstanding finish. The neutral and calming colour palette contrasts beautifully with the bright accessories and detailing, working in harmony alongside the walnut parquet flooring. The use of soft and luxurious materials create a genuine boutique hotel feel, with the expert integrated joinery seamlessly adorning the spaces and layouts throughout. The apartment comprises a combination of bespoke and made to order furniture; the client’s existing Fendi pieces were seamlessly integrated into the design, demonstrating the versatility and uniqueness of the project.

A key aspect of this project was the master bedroom. The specific elements of the brief were to retain the existing wardrobe joinery.

Elicyon skilfully transformed these with a change of colour and the addition of faux shagreen to the inserts of the front face of the doors.

The bespoke headboard is a focal point of the room, with its satin upholstery contrasting beautifully with the ethereal bespoke carved art silk rug. The exclusivity of the bedroom culminates in the bespoke artwork, commissioned to complement the shades of the colour palettes in the room.

This design brief was a fairly open one, with the client placing their trust in Elicyon to create something magnificent. Cecilia Halling, Creative Director for Elicyon explained that the clients wanted them to create a family home with an adventurous design. “Our clients wanted us to create a comfortable and liveable family home whilst they were willing to be adventurous with the design and colour scheme, which is a great combination,” she said.

The specially commissioned artwork throughout the residence was all selected to harmonise with the colour schemes. A grand scale bespoke piece features in the reception room, installed as part of the joinery with juxtaposing shades and textures of specialist metal, providing the perfect finish to the room. Halling stated that the client’s’ “inclination for metallics inspired the feature wall we created in the reception by incorporating a bespoke piece of art specially commissioned by Based Upon. Alongside an abstract skyline design in different textures of brass and bronze, this really catches the eye on entering the room.”

Halling was most drawn to the beautiful bespoke art within the room, as she said this was her favourite aspect of this entire project. “We followed suit in the other rooms in commissioning an artist to create oil paintings to complement our colour palettes throughout, conjugating each element to create a genuine bespoke look,” said Halling.

As well as the bespoke art, custom-made chandeliers grace select rooms such as the entrance, reception, dining room and bedroom; tying the rooms together throughout and adding prestige as well as supreme light reflection.

Situated on the Sandbanks Peninsula, Moondance is an exceptional development of two extremely spacious apartments and a stunning duplex penthouse with direct access to Poole Harbour. With its iconic envelope style architecture, it has been designed to take full advantage of the panoramic view and its truly unique location.

Expertly designed for modern living by David James Architects & Associates, Moondance was a winning project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2016. The property claimed the Residential £5million plus (property value) Award at the event in London.

The design brief was to create a distinctive residential living environment within an apartment block. Internally the apartments were to feel like individual bespoke houses while the external fabric of the building was specifically designed to represent a large house rather than a traditional apartment block.

In this way, the expanse of sea and the stunningly picturesque harbour becomes a focal point of the entire project.

Terraces facilitate the outdoor experience and oversized sliding glass doors open to provide flow between the interior and exterior spaces. Each apartment has stunning panoramic views of Poole Harbour and Brownsea Island, and the design embraces all available natural light while maximizing views across the water. In the penthouse, feature frameless glass walls are utilized internally, linking the double height space over the dining room to the master bedroom and study. This facilitates views through the double height space towards the harbour beyond.

In incorporating so much glass, the design team had the challenge of ensuring the apartments stayed comfortably warm and maintained a safe feeling of shelter.

One of their solutions was to incorporate intelligent lighting, and audio/visual and thermostatic control in every room.

Photovoltaic panels featured within the building reduce energy costs, making this address an environmentally and financially conscious one to live at. This, combined with high thermal performance and excellent insulation provides a comfortable, economical living environment.

Kitchens with every amenity wished for beckon the attention of chefs and culinary masterminds, as well as fun, messy homebaking, with pristine, white, wipe clean kitchen islands. Each apartment offers a spacious dining area and lounge with aquamarine views colouring every visage.

A large terrace is accessible via wide sliding glass doors which overlooks a manicured garden and idyllic houses alongside private piers beyond. The perfect place to relax with a book, or let inspiration seep into the soul. By night, the terrace is bordered by ethereal glowing night-lights set into the beds of neatly pruned evergreens, which add softness to the very structured outside spaces surrounding the apartments.
