THE PLATINUM ISSUE As you will know by now, we are well-known for calling our issues by titles, however The Platinum Issue is one we have not seen or published for almost a decade now. It was in fact one of our earliest hard back issues and was launched back in 2009 to celebrate the start of a year and the coming of the spring season. These issues are always key in every interior calender year, so back then, we wanted to signify this and create a luxurious and lasting publication. It seems apt this year, that after two years of living in a partially closed and restricted world that, as we emerge now and look forward to a new season, we should bring back The Platinum Issue in celebration of this fact and, indeed, in recognition.

of year in The World’s Most Glamorous Kitchens & Bathrooms segment of the book, with some of the most inspirational design schemes shortlisted for The International Design & Architecture Awards this year. It is your opportunity to see the first of the projects shortlisted ahead of the annual event and voting opening later in the year. As we look forward to longer and brighter days this issue, as well as our world, is full of hope, light and life. I do hope you enjoy it. Until next month, Joanne

The issue itself combines key looks in kitchens and bathrooms, which everyone wants to see at this time

“The project fits very well within the environment in terms of design, as the outdoor was heavily impacted by the plot shape, sun orientation, wind direction, as well as natural and man-made landscapes.”

Sky 19 is a unique beach residence designed using only two dominant colours: black and white. BLCK. were tasked by the client, owner of the coastal property on a triangular shaped plot overlooking an artificial lagoon, to create something one of a kind and to try to make up for the lost sea view. The design team created another view outdoors with a beautiful pool overlooking the artificial lagoon with emphasis placed on the outdoor settings as it is the most used part of the property. Owing to the glorious summer days in the are the designers wanted to increase the seating areas outdoor as much as possible. The client also asked for the lighting to be studied carefully for both the interior and exterior in order to accentuate the design elements. Natural lighting was also key as the unit already had large openings so they wanted to take advantage of that. BLCK. has been shortlisted for the Beach House Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2022. Aly Adel, Co-founder of BLCK. said of the Awards “We think it is a good exposure opportunity to showcase your work on an international level, especially that we have a lot of home-grown talents in Egypt like us that need a platform like this to shine on an international level”. BLCK. is a design firm specialising in architecture, interior, and landscape

20 design et al

design. The studio was founded in 2016 by a group of friends namely Aly Adel, Amena Mashhour, Ahmed Dsuki and Mohamed Mashhour. Offering a turnkey service managing a project from A-Z – specifically in terms of designing, contracting and furnishing, BLCK focuses on the tiniest of details for its clients. What is studied prior to the project is the overall lifestyle of the clients. SKY 19 is considered by BLCK. to be undoubtedly one of their most challenging projects to work on. Coordination became the most important skill in this project, as the client did not know what he wanted in terms of aesthetics. He trusted BLCK. with the project and followed the designers in complete confidence. The client was short on time wanting the project to be completed in July to be able to enjoy it in the summer. The whole process took 8 months for the design, fit outs, and FF&e. Everything in the project had to be carefully thought of from the offset, from the biggest elements to the tiniest details, in order to streamline the process and come out with the project as it is. BLCK. was entrusted with this turnkey project starting from scratch and delivering everything that is seen in the final design. It was a good opportunity for all the team members to shine and work together. BLCK. successfully fulfilled all of the

client’s needs and the project exceeded the client expectations. A beautiful outdoors that completely changes to an even more beautiful area when the lights are turned on. A large pool that serves as a water feature, an infinity pool, and children’s pool and at the same time highlighting all the elements of the outdoors from seating areas, dining tables, to walkways. Neo Cement flooring by Colortek delivered seamless indoor and outdoor cement flooring, 10 meters high main door, flush stainless-steel skirting, and of course co-ordination was the most important skill in this project. BLCK. believe the project succeeded on so many levels especially that the client loved the design and the project after it was realized. The project fits very well within the environment in terms of design, as the outdoor was heavily impacted by the plot shape, sun orientation, wind direction, as well as natural and man-made landscapes. All these factors were taken into consideration in the design process, such as positioning the main useable area of the pool to have maximum sunlight, the pool horizon aligned with the artificial lake, main eating areas aligned with the dominant wind especially the night breeze, and finally the dining table having the best sunset view in the backdrop of the artificial lake and pool.

UNPRETENTIOUS NATURALNESS THE LAKE HOTEL BY BLLENDDESIGNOFFICE

“The combination of earth tones, ochre and red earth highlights the geometric building volumes, while at night LED 3000K lighting fixtures highlight the building elements, incorporating the game of light and shading with different versions of materiality”.

The Lake Hotel, located in Ioannina Greece, comprises of 41 rooms translating tradition and local architecture following a modern design methodology in a luxury and warm setting. The hospitality project refers to a new five-star hospitality infrastructure at the lakeside location Limnopoula, in Ioannina. Bllend design team were invited to create a contemporary hotel identity based on a newly built three-level building shell with several classical elements of vernacular architecture such as the ‘sahnisi’ and the ‘arches’. The total surrounding area of 10 acres, is divided into various functional areas with local materiality associations and the colours of vernacular architecture. The landscape reminiscent of the local riverbeds gently slopes toward the pool which is treated like a villagers’ central square paved with sidewalk concrete tiles. To the left side the curved playground areas for events and entertainment for the little guests, while a purposeful selection of vegetation and plants emit the free forms of a natural setting. On the right side, the pool bar can be accessed via a wooden crossing over a shallow pool with river pebbles, while right next to it a Mediterranean herb garden was created to provide the purest ingredients for salads and traditional dishes. Respectively, the whole planting study moved in a single direction to integrate organically the flora of the wider area highlighting an unpretentious naturalness with minor human interventions. The same motivation dictated the uncoated structural elements such as the concrete sidewalks that delimit the areas of planting, traffic and public areas. Tradition is introduced allegorically at the parking zones where antique concrete paving in red clay and ochre were used

28 design et al

to portray the herringbone patterns typically found in Gianniotika handicrafts. The same pattern continues to all the driveways, the reception alley, the surrounding multipurpose space and the conference hallways at the basement. The basement level occupies the restaurant kitchen, conference halls and catering services for all the indoor and outdoor events. At the conference halls the element of tradition is introduced with an abstract version of the ornate wooden ceilings found in the local mansions, accentuated by recessed linear lighting fixtures that imitate highway lanes. At the same level the public restrooms were designed where the contrasting elements of white and black in intricate patterns prevail. The level occupies a state-ofthe-art wellness and relaxation concept inspired by the Vokos gorge both in terms of materiality, colour schemes and patterns as well as seasonality. On the ground floor there is a spacious lobby and reception area, bar, caffe, breakfast room and restaurant. Again dominant elements appear in the ornate wooden ceilings and marble floors with two-toned patterns, which allow under their weight to integrate smoothly and discreetly the velvet furniture, contemporary lighting and art pieces, as well as the industrial perforated metal balustrades. The corridors to the rooms and suites are dominated by specially designed doors and skirting boards, produced by local craftsmen while the 41 rooms and suites are divided into four different colour typologies Ocean Forest, Urban Earth, Slate Gray and Crimson Garden. The bathrooms depict herringbone patterns in warm beige marble and red brown marbles slates, illuminated uniformly in warm white light to create a spacious and welcoming hygiene area.

BllendDesignOffice have been Shortlisted for Hotel Under 50 Rooms – Europe Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2022. On entering the Awards, Design Director and Co-Founder of BllendDesignOffice, Helen Brasinika, said “It is a great opportunity to expose your work to a wide and diverse audience, test your design outcome and impact within a global industry context, while having a unique opportunity to network and get more exposure”. A favourite element of this project for the BllendDesignOffice team was unfolding tradition through the eyes of a designer. The wooden ceiling, handmade flower themes and drawings on the ceiling trellis, traditional materials combined with high tech technology, contemporary lighting design and fixtures, and bespoke doors, skirting, headboards demanding craftsmanship and skills. Local artists and painters were called upon to draw the ceiling, wooden craftsmanship for the handmade dropped ceiling, reclaimed wood suppliers, local marble installers and suppliers. The combination of earth tones, ochre and red earth highlights the geometric building volumes, while at night LED 3000K lighting fixtures highlight the building elements, incorporating the game of light and shading with different versions of materiality. The landscape is very natural, almost unfinished, local plants and Mediterranean herbs, a rich and traditional colour palette of the city’s rich architecture and history imported inside the interior scheme and colour choices. Tradition that is exposed gradually as a story without being intrusive. Contemporary design without losing its local and cultural context.

“The atmosphere pervading the villa is tranquil and harmonious with a feeling of relaxation and luxury. This is the ultimate in open plan living”.

The design inspiration for the Dubai Hills Villa was ‘The Tree of Life’, a concept born from nature and translated into a sophisticated interior mood and style that flows seamlessly between the internal and external spaces. This design language permeates the interior, changing texture, hue and intensity as dictated by the function and mood of each individual space. The atmosphere pervading the villa is tranquil and harmonious with a feeling of relaxation and luxury. This is the ultimate in open plan living. Upon entering the villa, the proportions of the double volume lobby provide a dramatic introduction to what lies ahead. The observer’s eye is immediately lead directly to the focal point of the villa interior, a central ten-meter-high enclosed central courtyard with a bespoke sculptural timber feature which extends up and over to enclose and protect the space. Sunlight filtering through this feature brings about a play of light and shadow that fills the volume, highlighting its dramatic proportions and spilling out into the adjoining spaces on two floors. These adjoining areas are linked to the central courtyard via elegant metal lined portals with large pivoting ribbed oak wall panels. The generous opening sizes blur the transition between spaces giving rise to a free-flowing interior. The identity of each individual space is however retained and defined through the use of pure forms, the juxtaposition of vertical and horizontal planes all accentuated through subtle use of light and shadow. Additional quirky accent pieces form focal points which surprise and delight the eye.

40 design et al

The interior spaces are connected to the external entertainment areas, manicured gardens and pool via tall glazed bifold doors. When open these increase the perceived living area by allowing a seamless integration of the interior and exterior spaces. The volumes of the private family living and bedroom areas on the upper floor are scaled to be warm and welcoming. The interiors retain the shared design language however, it is moulded to be more intimate, tactile and inviting through the inclusion of rich fabrics, luxurious stone surfaces and subtle lighting. The basement by contrast is focused on the excitement of the senses. It is divided between areas catering to entertainment and areas designed to provide relaxation and wellness. The design language of the entertainment areas is moulded to evoke a sense of drama, defined by rich dark hues, textured and embossed finishes, subdued background and discrete focused lighting combining to conjure a sense of history and tradition superimposed with the latest in audio-visual entertainment technology. The relaxation and wellness areas by contrast are softer with lighter tones, tactile finishes and soft even lighting. When asked about her favourite aspect of this project, Design Director, Helen Skea, explained “There are so many aspects I love about this project it is hard to choose, but if I had to it would be the Basement Whiskey Bar with its real copper rolled top bar and whiskey barrels shipped from the States as a feature wall display, plus a fabulous bespoke wine cellar”.

Infinite Architects Interior Design Urban Planning DMCC has been shortlisted for Luxury Residence £10 Million Plus Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2022. When discussing the importance of the Awards Helen stated that she has been involved in the Awards with her previous company and enjoyed the high standard of the event and meeting interesting people within the same field. Helen believes the success of the project resulted from the formation of an exceptional team who followed the project from inception to completion. The client was an integral part of this team. Her outstanding taste and fantastic eye for detail resulted in her meaningful contribution to every aspect of the design process. This coupled with the designer placing utmost importance on attention to detail and quality of execution resulted in an exceptional villa. The clients’ vision was flawlessly interpreted by Infinite and exquisitely executed by BW Interiors. The building was transformed from bare shell and core into a high value 7 bedroom luxury villa. The functionality and detailing define the quality and aesthetic of this project. The designers have taken 5 elements in nature – Earth, Water, Wood, Metal, Fire – to define the language of the design. These combine to inform the cohesive ‘making’ of the interior spaces. The seamless nature of the villa is further underlined by the carefully selected palette of materials creating a shared aesthetic design language throughout.

“The family are guided on a journey through space. Strong design details and material elements, such as the stone and carpentry finishing, establish symmetry in the front entrance…”

This five-bedroom executive flat located in Pasir Ris, Singapore has been transformed into a Feng Shui haven for the couple and their three children that live within. Parallelogram Design Pte Ltd were tasked with harmonizing the homeowners with their surrounding environment. Aesthetically, the homeowner wanted the house to have elements of a timeless luxury style to reflect the urban contemporary look of Singapore. Functionally, they wanted to have a space that separates both social and private space and with personal activities included in their everyday life. Creative Director, Aloysius Ong wanted to create a gradual transition from the social to the private interior space and help his clients decompress from the fast pace of the city. This sense of decompression is achieved through the materials palette, which mirrors the interior environment in the communal social space and then becomes softer and warmer into the bedrooms as they continue their journey into the house. This concept was driven by connectivity, the layering of spaces and the creation of views. The family are guided on a journey through space. Strong design details and

48 design et al

material elements, such as the stone and carpentry finishing, establish symmetry in the front entrance and draw the view to the secluded style living space when approaching the space. This natural lighting and well-ventilated space heightens the whole interior experience, providing intimacy and sensational mood of each individual area that deepens the connection between the house itself and homeowner. Transitioning through the interconnected spaces, lower ceilings and a change of materials signal the entrance to more private spaces, where the colour palette is expanded — and varies in each room — and spaces become cosier, warmer and more domestic. Aloysius explains, “The idea was to create spaces that would transport the family to a luxurious boutique hotel by using selected muted tones and honed materials to enhance the sense of authenticity and comfort. This creates a quiet, elegant atmosphere, with mirrored surfaces and natural stone catching the eye. The central point-of-sale is made from stone and commands attention, while the bespoke furnishings, woven elements and handmade touches add texture, luxury and a feeling of escape.”

Parallelogram Design Pte Ltd has been shortlisted for Interior Design Scheme – Global Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2022. The Awards will be held in London in September 2022. Aloysius discussed his thoughts on the Awards when shortlisted “I have always been keen on pushing boundaries to come up with design solutions that are artistic and unconventional. I enjoy seeing things from different perspectives and our inspirations range from globalisation to architecture, furniture and everyday life. Thus, knowing that The International Design & Architecture Award is one of the made-toknown around Global to fully understand and learn about every different country culture and design histories & languages”. The requirement to balance between both Feng Shui and the colours and layout that the design team and the client went through over design discussions was a challenge with this project. Aloysius explained that he “felt that it was an accomplishment doing a house with very strict Feng Shui restrictions” and continued “I would say the client and his family were very happy with what was being achieved”.

SPIRIT OF THE MEDITERRANEAN PIVORA RESTAURANT BY SIA MOORE ARCHITECTURE INTERIOR DESIGN

The Platinum Issue 55

“Reflecting the vibrant and energetic spirit of the Mediterranean culture, Pivora presents a warm seafood restaurant experience.”

Pivora is a modern, boho-chic Seafood Restaurant, offering an extensive selection of fish and seafood gourmet dishes. Sia Moore’s design objective for Pivora, was to create a Mediterranean, luxurious and a boho-chic modern restaurant design. The restaurant which is located at Istinye Park shopping mall in Izmir, Turkey is a two-storey space; composed of a ground floor with the main dining hall, bar, kitchen, elliptical seafood showcases and a mezzanine with dishwashing unit, electrical room and staff room. The client’s brief was to integrate the restaurant guests and shopping mall visitors to the seafood cooking and preparation processes. So as a transparent design solution, the designers installed a large window opening to the front side of kitchen. And by doing this, mall visitors and restaurant guests are able to watch the chefs and meal preparation processes. The shopping mall in which the restaurant is located, has a design concept which is inspired from Izmir’s historical stone village area, Alaçatı region, so for the restaurant’s interior the designers have integrated that same boho concept. Mimicking the natural stones of Alaçatı region terrazzo was selected for the flooring. For the wall of main dining area, brickworks were chosen and to complete such organic texture, wooden furniture, bamboo materials were selected for several decorative items together with indoor plants. Reflecting the vibrant and energetic spirit of the Mediterranean culture, Pivora

56 design et al

presents a warm seafood restaurant experience. From its custom design wooden furniture and bar decorations to the brickworks on the wall of main dining room and its bamboo lighting solutions completed by indoor plants hanging over the ceiling, all aiming to set the mood for a comfortable dining experience; an experience in which the joy rises by sharing with friends and family. All interior design, manufacturing and installation works were carried out by Sia Moore Architecture Interior Design’s Factory. For the ground floor, the space was divided into two zones - the main dining room and the bar with three elliptical seafood showcase, refrigerators, wine racks and kitchen area. The restaurant space was originally built as one-storey area. However, during the design stage, building a mezzanine was proposed to the client to provide a dining area with a high ceiling and spacious feeling. Electrical and mechanical rooms, staff room and dishwashing unit were then located to the mezzanine floor, which was covered by glass film to conceal the space from the guest’s dining area. The restaurant is filled with rough unprocessed surfaces - complex brickwork, terrazzo flooring, exposed ceiling design. Many of the decoration details nod towards seafood and organic life. Connotations that are vastly related to a marine theme appear in the paintings and large elliptical seafood showcase, in the large kitchen window where the fresh food is cooked in front of the dining tables, and in the emerald green bar tiles inspired by the colours of the fascinating underwater habitat.

Considering the multifunctional requirements of the restaurant, the total square meter of the one storey space was relatively small. To divide the space with an attempt to respond all restaurant functions; a mezzanine was designed and built. Through building a mezzanine, the electrical, mechanical and staff rooms and dishwashing units were located separately from the main guest dining area, bar and elliptical seafood showcases. As a result, on entering the restaurant, guests are welcomed with a spacious interior with two-storey ceiling height. The ceiling height provided by the mezzanine also serves to separate the ground floor into two main areas: the main dining room and an area for the bar and elliptical showcases, thus enabling the integration of all required functions into the space by dividing it into different usage areas. For the manufacturing of elliptical shaped seafood showcases, bar, wooden separators, Sia Moore Architecture Interior Design’s Factory collaborated with experienced and well-known local craftsman who manufactured and installed their custom designs with detailed precision and high level of specialist work quality. Sia Moore Architecture Interior Design have been Shortlisted for Restaurant – Global Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2022. Founder and Architect, Banu Altay was delighted to be shortlisted explaining “As an Architect and an Interior Designer, The International Hotel & Property Awards is the leader of the sector for all of us. So it is very important for us to be a part of this community. I hope our project will be awarded and highly appreciated”.

“The hallmarks of all Alison’s designs are her dramatic playfulness with scale, a deep respect for the original architecture, attention to fine detail, a reverence for historical and cultural influences”

Alison Henry Design reimagined a rather tired and outdated London Georgian Villa and corresponding Mews House to create an extraordinary house perfect for entertaining. The brief given to Alison Henry Design was to reimagine a rather tired London Georgian Villa and Mews House to a home perfect for the family residing in it. Despite a basement excavation and Tree Preservation Order on the magnificent London plane tree in the courtyard complicating the works, the Alison Henry Design team delivered the spectacular restoration project in spring 2020. The five-storey building has been restored from top to bottom, enriched by marble fittings, massive steel-framed windows, bespoke ironmongery, crystal chandeliers, silk rugs, new ceiling roses and even a hand-tufted New Zealand wool carpet. Romantic French doors lead from the entrance hall to the dining room and on to the kitchen. There lies a wonderful surprise: a double height Crittall glass wall and roof, a palatial orangery, with climbers and antique camellia urns, with views of the luscious courtyard garden. The kitchen within this show-stopping light box, a collaboration between Alison Henry Design and Officine Gullo, makes entertaining a glamorous affair with matte white cabinetry, nickel detailing, Versailles floors, and Calacatta Caldia marble. Officine Gullo’s collaboration on the kitchens showcases the very best of contemporary kitchen design in both the Main house and Mews House. The Orangery Kitchen combining drama, light and practical usability into a fantastic focal point for family and friends

68 design et al

is a favourite aspect of the project for Alison Henry, Managing Director of Alison Henry Design. Alison Henry is known for interiors that cater to the needs of the modern family while invoking a sense of grandeur and timelessness. Alison’s sense of laid-back glamour is truly reflected in this project. The garden feels like a living room within a home: metal furniture with soft buttoned cushions, lounge area, carved gas fireplace, sun loungers, breakfast area and Officine Gullo barbecue in keeping with the kitchen’s design. The hallmarks of all Alison’s designs are her dramatic playfulness with scale, a deep respect for the original architecture, attention to fine detail, a reverence for historical and cultural influences, and an understanding of the daily life practicalities that influence the making of a true home. For Alison, one of the pleasures of this restoration was working in classical and contemporary design languages. Referencing the Main House’s Georgian architecture in its interiors, the Mews has a contemporary yet refined appeal with a beautifully restored staircase, a rescue from the original Main House. The wooden dining table, rush seating and white oiled oak flooring, bring warmth and a sense of relaxed rusticity. One of Alison’s trademarks, this pattern can be seen throughout both houses – combining light and airiness with warm touches. The design preserves and enhances the best of the existing location - both Main House and corresponding Mews House, their architectural heritage and even the magnificent London Plane tree in the garden in between. History is respected while being brought up to date with a bright, liveable space that makes the

most of modern urban living, working and entertainment. Alison Henry Design have been shortlisted for the Kitchen Design Over £150,000 Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2022. When asked about the importance of the Awards Alison explained “The International Design & Architecture Awards represent the pinnacle of interior design throughout the world and provide an essential reference and meeting point for the very best architectural and design companies globally”. Alison is rightly proud of the Belgravia Georgian Vila project as it allowed her to showcase so many of her key style drivers and sense of laidback glamour. The International Design & Architecture Awards are the perfect medium to share this style with the world. The gardens, dramatic orangery kitchen and entertaining rooms, sumptuously appointed bedrooms, gym/ballet studio, and cinema/family room all reflect Alison Henry’s classic sense of laidback glamour. Playing with an almost monochromatic white scheme, the design team brought in characterful layers of texture with white oiled oak floorboards, white chalk finished walls, pale grey silk rugs, handpicked antiques, bespoke crystal Murano chandeliers and French style carved marble fireplaces. The design breathes new life into wonderfully located but tired property, seamlessly fusing old and new. This is a place for relaxing with family and gathering with friends for serious entertaining. With a deep respect for its historic bones, Alison Henry Design has transformed an historic Georgian Villa into a splendid yet ultra-inviting haven for modern family living.

LEFT: A Celestial Sanctuary by Younique Designs A Celestial Sanctuary is a star-studded sanctuary featuring Lilac Marble and a Smart Glass window that turns from frosted to clear like magic. The clients enjoy travelling and staying in luxury hotels and desired to have that same experience while at home. A Pewter metallic freestanding bathtub was located directly across from the entrance to serve as a dramatic focal point. Framed with a custom cabinetry entablature and topped with a striking starburst chandelier that was converted to low voltage to meet local building code, the bathing area becomes the true star of the show. Lilac Marble and Black Nero marble tile were both repeated multiple times throughout the space in varying shapes and textures which adds interest while keeping the colour consistent throughout. The Starburst detail is repeated from the chandelier over the tub to the floating mirrors over the vanities and gold finishes are repeated in lighting, plumbing, and cabinetry hardware. www.myyouniquedesigns.com

TOP RIGHT: The brief for this project was to create a family kitchen, which would be the heart of the home, in a newly renovated Edwardian semi detached in Barnes. Lanserring wanted to design a sleek, clean and understated kitchen with an injection of soul and a strong sense of craftsmanship. The aim was to create dark, tonal symmetry with the cabinetry, backsplash and counters on the far back wall, to enhance with the almond gold touches. As avid cooks with a passion for entertaining, the clients intended to spend a lot of their time in this room. The kitchen needed to be family friendly – a design that would mature well but also be functional and provide ample storage, creating a clean look given this is the most used and important room in the house. The clients wanted cascading stone down the sides and chose a stone that would work with the hanging shelf, perforated to facilitate extraction, another design impact and signature of Lanserring. Hand-painted cabinetry in warm charcoal, recessed brushed brass finger pulls, an expansive central island and patinated metal splashback all add texture to the kitchen. The darker cabinetry contrasts with the light material of the island and the herringbone flooring, and the steel framed double glass doors ensure that a lot of light reaches the full kitchen space. Lanserring wanted to allow the kitchen to appear as spacious as possible, interfacing seamlessly along the back wall. In order to keep a consistent aesthetic and colour palette, the team created a concealed door to the pantry on the right-hand side of the kitchen, using the same hand painted technique, although on a much thicker piece of wood and using specialised hinges. www.lanserring.com/

ABOVE: The Cotes Mill Haberdashery by deVOL Kitchens, Interior Designer: Helen Parker. Inspired by mid-century interiors and haberdashery shops, the Cotes Mill Haberdashery Kitchen is the most atmospheric and nostalgic kitchen ever. It's moody and atmospheric and the perfect combination of traditional yet unexpected. The glazed wall of doors and windows fitted with heritage glass is a window into another era where everything is beautifully organised, yet gloriously simple. The use of limewash paint and embossed wallpaper has given the room a character that can’t be created by a simple paint finish, it has so much more texture and personality. The two runs of furniture are reminiscent of a shopkeeper's domain, the back run with all the necessary cupboards for getting down to business. In front, an elegant and slender island where the shopkeeper will turn his attention to his customers and friends. This type of layout is one of deVOL Kitchens’ favourites, especially in a long room with the luxury of space. www.devolkitchens.co.uk

“Integrated and understated lighting is used to illuminate either side of the wall panels belonging to the vanity mirrors. This was provided by Boyd Lighting, a fourth-generation design company dedicated to creating uncompromisingly beautiful, artisan-made lighting.”

A “luxury personal oasis” is what interior designer Fatima Silva sought to create when asked to produce a luxe master bathroom for the 43rd San Francisco Decorator’s Showcase in September last year. The founder and principal of California’s FDG Design Group, Silva had already used her artistic and creative skills in many spa and wellness environments. With this particular project she was keen to show the overlap between wellness and technology, and in particular how the latter can be personalised to further enhance the relaxing and spa-like feel of the bathroom environment. The master bathroom, in a San Francisco apartment in the city’s West Flay Park neighbourhood, embraces the functionality of a bathroom but also contains an element of allure, and certainly, pizazz. Much of the luxury feel in evidence is down to the smoothness of the interesting and erratically-veined natural stone slabs. However, the intriguing artworks in the form of standalone and thought-provoking sculptures, together with the beautiful bespoke woodwork both undoubtedly add to the charm too. Provided by Da Vinci, the white, gleaming marble slabs are the principle material for the walls and flooring of this master bathroom. The countertops were presealed prior to installation in order to ensure their fitting – and ongoing maintenance – would be as easy as possible. The natural look and feel are

continued with the warm wood cabinetry, designed by Merritt Woodwork. The bathroom cabinetry was custom-built, but so too were the speciality medicine cabinets, which were specially created by local artisans in iron. Wallpaper designers De Gournay supplied a gilded gold wall covering with a leaf motif – which also lent an additional reference to the natural environment – and the luxe linen shades in natural stone were from The Shade Store. One of the highlights of the project for the Interior Designer was initially choosing the slab material at the yard. Another was integrating the art works into the bathroom in a way that somehow seemed natural, but also unexpected. Her main aim from the beginning was to come up with a bathroom design which displayed a contemporary sensibility, but within a sensory environment. Kohler ‘smart’ fixtures were selected to help personalise the bathroom further by allowing the homeowner to set their own music choice while indulging in a steam shower. Integrated and understated lighting is used to illuminate either side of the wall panels belonging to the vanity mirrors. This was provided by Boyd Lighting, a fourth-generation design company dedicated to creating uncompromisingly beautiful, artisanmade lighting. For the last century, Boyd Lighting have built a legacy of honest, enduring design. With premium materials and a made-

to-order ethos, their lighting is built by craftspeople who care about every detail. From their workshop in Colorado, Boyd artisans use time-honoured techniques to cut, solder, turn and hand produce every piece so that each one bears the loyal imprint of its maker. Boyd Lighting always seek to celebrate beauty, to strive for perfection and elegance. That passion and wisdom has been passed down through generations and the vision of clean, modern-day fixtures, blend time-honored processes, with new technologies to create resonant new designs that fuse artistry with intent. The perfect choice for this showcase bathroom. The bathroom is within a 6,500-squarefoot Mediterranean-style home, built in 1926, that has a rural feel. The house sits atop a hilly location where views of the Bay and woodlands are much in evidence. This panorama has been incorporated by introducing nature into the bathroom in the form of wood and stone. FDG Design Group believe a key element to creating the Spa bathroom is the connection to the natural environment through visual connection to the outdoors as well as integrating organic elements through the use of wood for a more relaxed aesthetic. The result of this project is ‘room as retreat’ aesthetic where the design, organic elements and the innovative technology all help elevate the traditional bathroom experience.

“The true spa-like bathroom experience means functionality and relaxation without complex designs. The monochrome colour scheme exudes simplicity and exclusivity simultaneously… ”

Opposite the much-loved Canal Street and a short walk away from Piccadilly Station, the Velvet Hotel in Manchester boasts individually styled bedrooms with contemporary décor, featuring SANIPEXGROUP bathroom solutions. With news of the end of lockdown in the United Kingdom coinciding with the reopening of the hospitality industry, the Velvet Hotel capitalised on its vibrant district location in Manchester to unveil its new rooms, featuring SANIPEXGROUP bathroom solutions, to the public. Each stunning bedroom and penthouse suite is individually designed to an exceptionally high standard offering indulgent luxury. All rooms enjoy elegant furnishings and offer a flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi. The modern bathrooms are equipped with steam-free mirrors and luxury toiletries. With options of freestanding bathtubs to rainfall showers, this grand boutique hotel guarantees a spa-like bathroom experience with the highest degree of comfort, convenience, and relaxation without the need for complex designs. The brief for the bathrooms was cool and contemporary whilst maintaining a luxurious feel with the use of the matt white stone Koy baths which was the main element of the design. The hotel owner wanted the guests to feel like they had true spa like experience. This grand boutique hotel boasts individually styled bedrooms with contemporary décor. From the moment the hotel is entered the glamorous scene is set by a huge, gold gilt mirror and crystal chandelier. While rooms are colourful, corridors are black and white with quirky photographs on walls. The branded restaurant has pictures of the celebrity chef himself on walls, dark parquet flooring and pops of colour from mustard cushions and blue velvet curtains. Every one of the 19 rooms has its own unique décor – from statement

wallpaper, to exposed brick walls and even a huge gothic mural. The overall aesthetic of the hotel was considered when designing the bathrooms and the designers at SANIPEXGROUP worked with the hotel owner to meet the brief of spa like bathrooms that integrate perfectly with the trendy style of the hotel. Bathrooms are spacious and bright with soft surfaces, neutral tones, spa like shower heads, underfloor heating, dimmed mood lighting and vary from having oversized square tubs designed for two or roll-tops to showers only. The matt sanitaryware integrates into the calm sophisticated atmosphere throughout the hotel design and the neutral tones offset the vibrant colour scheme in an elegant manner. A considered approach by the designer has led to a functional space yet does not compromise on style. The bathrooms provide a luxurious atmosphere, with SANIPEXGROUP’s BAGNODESIGN brand providing bath and shower solutions ranging from Freestanding Bathtubs, rainfall Shower Heads and Hand Showers to bespoke shower enclosures manufactured in the UK by Roman, as per dedicated space and aesthetic. The true spa-like bathroom experience means functionality and relaxation without complex designs. The monochrome colour scheme exudes simplicity and exclusivity simultaneously through the mixture of White Countertop Basins and Rimless WCs with Matt Black Revolution Basin Mixers, AQUAECO Dual Flush Plates and matching bathroom accessories. The timing of this project came with its challenges – obtaining materials during lockdown and tight deadlines, in order for the hotel to open when covid restrictions were lifted – but SANIPEXGROUP have successfully met the design brief with understated, exclusive bathrooms that offer the hotel guests a true spa like experience within their hotel room.
