As a Publisher of several design titles and someone who has worked for the past twenty years in design, I am more than a little excited to witness the start of a new phase in yacht and aviation design. This is client-based and when I say client I am referring to the new designsavvy client, the client with class, style and sophisticated taste on their side. Well, either that or an experienced interior designer by their side, guiding them in the right direction. Either way, it is a great step forward and one that, here at Luxe et al, we are keen to celebrate. This issue we do just that with projects by Winch Design and Cantiere delle Marche that raise our

expectations when it comes to interior styling and illustrate design at its best. We step too into some of the most inspiring of this year’s shortlisted projects in The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2018. We shall of course be looking at more projects over the coming issues. In addition, this issue we consider the all-important design components, the vital pieces that make up the successful scheme; from flooring and lighting to fabrics, wallcovering and bespoke cabinetry. Until next month Joanne

OUTSIDE IN THE BOMBAY COLLECTION – LINK OUTDOOR Link Outdoor designs and manufactures furniture and fabric collections that inspire designers to consider the outdoors as a continuum to their stylish interiors. Link is defined by its versatile designs, casual sophistication and youthful modernism inspired by classical forms. Link’s collections offer unparalleled comfort, elegant proportions, bespoke craftsmanship, and timeless designs for all tastes; from casual contemporary to sophisticated transitional styles. The Bombay Collection was designed to utilise large pieces of teak timber, scarcely found in new outdoor furniture. Currently most companies are offering teak furniture made from thin young growth trees because it’s cheap to make, easily accessible but often breaks too easily. With this in mind Link Outdoor have placed great importance on offering a robust teak collection that offers equal emphasis on craftsmanship and comfort for their customers. The Bombay Collection is constructed from properly matured teak timber that enhances its natural strength for uncompromised quality and comfort. Bombay is a great versatile collection because it’s all about casual comfort, honest materials and graceful proportions that can harmonise effortlessly with nature. Luxe et al 25

Plus Vltra is the first of four units in Amels’ Limited Editions 242, but there is certainly nothing generic about her. Despite her slender and sleek exterior profile, Plus Vltra consists of an internal volume of 1,790 Gross Tonnes. With a name inspired by the ancient Pillars of Hercules signifying the edge of the known world, Plus Vltra, translating to ‘farther beyond’ is as much a breakthrough in tradition and a pioneer of a new direction of yacht building and design as the meaning of her name suggests. The owners hoped to make it the ultimate residence at sea and drafted in the experts at Winch Design to direct the interiors. “The owners wanted a full-time residence, not a holiday boat” says Winch Design’s founder, Andrew Winch, “that informed every aspect of the design.”. Splitting Plus Vltra’s accommodation into an owner’s deck, two VIPs on the main deck and three guest cabins on the lower deck, means that three generations can have their own space or come together as desired. The fully custom interior is truly a representation of the owner’s style and can clearly be picked up while walking through the yacht and taking in all the different colour schemes, materials and surface elements. The challenge was to make a very residential feeling interior, drawing on the lifestyle of the Côte d’Azur and the client’s favourite resorts along the French and Italian Rivieras. “If you take a look at some of the hotels in the South of France—such as the Hôtel du Cap—they are classical and they are about wonderful sea views with very light interiors.” Winch says, “The client wanted, architecturally, a classic interior, classic mouldings, classical selections of marbles and furniture. They wanted variety and individuality to the boat.”. Overall, the impression is nouveau classical, a fresh take on Côte d’Azur grandeur. There is a lot for the eyes to feast on, a highly decorated interior but also gentle and relaxing to be in. It’s an extremely decorative design, with complex patterned marbles, stained woods and plenty of crystal. However, due to the mixture of neutrals with soft Côte d’Azur tones of blue and yellow, the 26 Luxe et al

THE OWNERS WANTED A FULL-TIME RESIDENCE, NOT A HOLIDAY BOAT.

outcome remains light and relaxing – achieving the main aim to feel more like a home than a boat. To make this particular style - with its delicate touches and finishings - yachtfriendly, Winch Design worked with Amels on designing ways to secure priceless pieces of art such as the crystal chandeliers in the main saloon. “We have never been asked before to do chandeliers that appear to be free-hanging. If you go back to Victorian yachts, they would have freehanging chandeliers but here you can’t afford a rattle, something to be tinkling or breaking.”. In order to produce these chandeliers in the main and dining saloons, hundreds of individual crystal droplets were fixed with tiny metal pins. They were penned by Winch Design and manufactured by Czech crystal specialist Preciosa. Continuing their efforts to achieve a homey feeling, Winch’s Greig Jolly and the design team moved wherever possible away from fixed furnishings and decor typical of yacht interiors. “We tried to keep the furniture eclectic,” Jolly says, “avoiding things being too similar. We wanted to give the feeling of pieces collected over time and make them seem individual.”. They sourced furnishings from Italian and French suppliers or asked their own team to craft custom pieces using fabrics from Rubelli, Pozzoli, Armani Casa and Versace. They also experimented with bleaching and unusual staining on the curly-maple veneers used throughout the rooms. The absence of long corridors, which are common within planes, trains and boats, created more atmospheric spaces and thus a residential feel. A corridor was however necessary aft of the cabin, to lead between the decadent ‘his and hers’ ensuites to the master bedroom, but has been enhanced as far as possible. “Because of the way we planned the positions of the showers, with their own windows and sand etched glass enclosures, you get light through both bathrooms and into the middle of the corridor.” explains Winch. The master-bedroom suite, which has direct access to the foredeck, stretches across the width of the yacht. The palette

of greens, metallics, and neutrals is mirrored in the Rubelli curtains and the custom rug. The wall covering sketched by Winch and produced by Fromental are hand painted silk. A remarkable 21 types of marble were used throughout the vessel to create veinedstone variations creating an air of natural elegance. The circular lobby adorned with a mosaic artwork made with shards of six different marbles by Magma in Sicily and designed by the Winch team opens to the main saloon, where dramatic pillars were hand laid with Moon gold leaf, giving them a metallic iridescence. Ivory velvet upholstery by Pozzoli adorns the sofas, while bleached curly-maple panels line the walls. The silkand-wool carpet is a bespoke collaboration between Winch Design and Tai Ping. One level up, the owners’ deck provides commanding sea views from every vantage. The relaxed private lounge has blue-stained sycamore panelling and low-slung seating in front of a concealed cinema screen. In the daytime, light streams through the floor-toceiling windows along both sides. The lower deck incorporates a spectacular central spa pool, massage area, steam room, bar and sauna with a window on to a broad, fold-down balcony to starboard. The 6.5-metre swimming pool on the main aft deck is certainly worth a mention. It is 1.2 metres deep and comes complete with its own current simulator that allows guests to enjoy a few morning warm-up ‘laps’ before breakfast. The remainder of the aft deck covers a staggering 180 square metres that is filled with several loose furniture pieces and a large lounging centrepiece. When the owners took their first trip, they were thrilled by the attention to detail and overall quality of the interior. Since delivery the owners have been using the yacht extensively and have enjoyed time aboard with their family and friends at home on the Mediterranean Sea.

PERFORMANCE AND PERSONALITY Maxine Tissenbaum Interior Design Da Vinci

32 Luxe et al

Luxe et al 33

The Mangusta 165E is the fastest yacht in the world, amongst those built in the series, with a top speed that largely exceeds 35 knots. Besides her excellent performance, this model is characterised by a very special, aggressive design which outwardly anticipates her spirited nature: her unmistakably racy, sporty lines, an authentic icon of the brand, are flanked by the recent aesthetic and structural alterations introduced for the “evolution” series. These include the new shape of the glazing, and the lengthened flybridge with the end section of the stern featuring aesthetic grating that brings to mind the world of car design.

I TREAT EVERY PROJECT AS IF THEY WERE MY OWN HOME. THAT TRANSLATES INTO A WARM, WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT.

Toronto based designer, Maxine Tissenbaum, was responsible for the interior design of the project. When she first thought about the concept for Da Vinci, her client was the focus. She wanted it to have the strength of personality that the client embodied, and to be a refuge from a very fast-paced life. When designing Da Vinci, she made sure that it was glamorous, but still inviting and playful. Ready to entertain on the high seas, but easy to find a quiet nook to work and relax in. Da Vinci is bespoke and has all the elements of a sophisticated home. “Da Vinci” clearly expresses the comfort and luxury desired for her guests who are able to enjoy a number of private or social areas onboard, inside or “en plein air”. Large windows let copious amounts of natural light into the interiors and the three skylights by the table in the large living-room contribute to the ongoing dialogue between indoors and out.

The materials chosen for the onboard fittings are essentially natural wood stained in different shades of grey for the flooring and similar shades for the walls and furniture; exquisite marbles from various sources and burnished or polished brass. Refined, highly valuable furnishings have been installed and fitted all over the yacht. Two large black cupboards have been fitted either side of the entrance. Made of wood and black painted glass, they enhance the flooring produced in three different kinds of marble black Zebrino, cornflower blue Palissandro and Marquina - set out like a puzzle using pieces of all different sizes and shapes. The bar counter, also made of black Zebrino marble, stands out in this area. The front section has a geometric design consisting of panels in grey wood and decorations in polished brass.

34 Luxe et al

Entertainment is built into the décor. Behind the bar, there is a wall-mounted unit for bottles of spirits, featuring a practical up & down system enabling users to have everything at their fingertips as they need it. When not in use, everything is concealed in order not to interfere with the transparency of the glazing. The living area consists of a large corner sofa, which has been skilfully studied in order to create a comfortable, versatile conversation area. The wall separating the salon from the wheelhouse

has been embellished with an exquisite piece of material art, created using a combination of countless small mirrors in different shapes and sizes. The underlying unit features valuable stingray leather doors in various shades of blue. The full beam owner area is located astern and plays on the contrast between black and white. The materials used here are white-stained ash for the walls and structural elements, blackstained ash for the doors, white parquet for the flooring and black leather with decorative hinges in polished brass for the headboard on the bed. There are also Marquina marble and brass legs for the bedside tables, and lacquered pearly white and brass rods for the units to the right of the yacht. The designer lamps are unusual with their black and brass bases, as is the seat of the vanity unit in Pirarucu fish leather with bronzed finishes. The stern cockpit opens out with a lounge area which can be protected from the sun. It is separated from the dining-area by a central unit in white and blue featuring geometric patterns. The large table can comfortably seat up to 12 people. At the bow, there is a Mediterranean club lounge featuring a Jacuzzi. Regarding details on the design development of Da Vinci, Maxine Tissenbaum Interior Design like to be very innovative and take pride in always being one step ahead of current trends. Before Maxine was an Interior Designer, she was a Fashion Designer. Fashion and design always play a dual role in any projects she works on, and this is evident in the design for Da Vinci. One of the approaches that the firm had in designing this yacht was always to refer to lifestyle: movies, art, fashion and magazines. Taking all of these elements and incorporating them into the design is what made Da Vinci so spectacular and on trend. Maxine explains “I treat every project as if they were my own home. That translates into a warm, welcoming environment.” She continued “I feel very privileged to have been working alongside the Mangusta design team and visiting the shipyard frequently. As a Canadian, being in Italy and absorbing their culture added a lot of inspiration to the design.” Experiencing the sea to the full with friends and family, and do so in a versatile way, with the opportunity to freely use the many areas available for relaxing or socialising, is a feature which has always made the layout of the external areas of a Mangusta yacht stand out from the others. Even this 165 is an expression of this philosophy.

DESIGN IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER, AND TODAY OWNERS WANT A YACHT THAT OFFERS THE ULTIMATE BLEND OF PERFORMANCE, STYLE, LUXURY AMENITIES AND COMFORT. IN SATISFYING THE DEMAND FOR AN ELEGANT MOTOR YACHT THAT HARMONISES CLASSIC YACHTING TRADITION WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN, WE DESIGNED THE DOMINATOR ILUMEN TO FAR EXCEED OUR CLIENTS’ EXPECTATIONS. From its ground-breaking concept via innovative engineering solutions and the most advanced materials and technologies through to the exquisite bespoke dressing of each and every motor yacht, the Dominator Ilumen 28M sets a new standard in power, agility, comfort, luxury and security. The result is a yachting experience like no other, providing everything a mega yacht offers but in convenient 28-metre format. The first Ilumen, M/Y Kalliente was designed for an advanced vision of life on the water, with a double-deck master stateroom, four guest cabins and the space of a much larger yacht on board. Inside it’s the direction of light that fuels the dramatic expanse of space found in this modestly sized yacht. Kalliente is generous yet minimalist, every inch a contemporary design feat yet more than fit for purpose. “Design is more important than ever, and today owners want a yacht that offers the ultimate blend of performance, style, luxury amenities and comfort. In satisfying the demand for an elegant motor yacht that harmonises classic yachting tradition with modern technology and design, we designed the Dominator Ilumen to far exceed our clients’ expectations.” Alberto Mancini, Designer Dominator thought big from the outset, applying the technology, processes and quality materials usually reserved for mega yachts. The designers of Alberto Mancini Yacht Design and engineers of NavalHEAD followed the inspired lead provided by Dominator’s owners to arrive at a flowing architecture that harmonises functionality, form, comfort, amenities, power, safety and sea keeping agility like no other vessel in its class. The Ilumen series of yachts is different because it was conceived from a new perspective – not in the conventional way but from the desire to create something truly outstanding. Many of the best luxury products are design-led, but with the Ilumen range of motor yachts Dominator goes one step further to develop its offering from the basis of an experience-led philosophy. It is product development that begins with the client, not the product, and works its way back from the idealised vessel through

44 Luxe et al

exhaustive R&D, innovative engineering, inspired design and the creation of industryleading solutions and exquisite final dressing to emerge as a ground-breaking luxury yacht that defies the conventional limitations to become, quite simply, the best in its field. “We set out to challenge limitations and provide the same sensation of space, elegance and luxury in a 28-metre format that you would expect in a mega yacht, “says Chief Designer, Alberto Mancini. “When I first saw the hull, deck and superstructure I realised it was the beginning of a new era.” And indeed, the features such as the owner’s cabin, a beautifully curved glass frontage, the rotating beach platform and the impressive fly deck are unique, industryleading features. The Dominator Ilumen is characterised by unique touches and features, such as the handcrafted Purismo Aurelia, a bespoke lightweight carbon e-bike that like the Ilumen 28M represents the pinnacle in its field and adds to the practicality and enjoyment of your yacht. “To us Ilumen is more than just a yacht or a luxurious product. It symbolises the love of manmade beauty that is not only in harmony with nature but complements it and represents a desire to contribute to a better world. To own an Ilumen or strive for one is connected to the obligation to strive for a better world, support our fellow man and promote peace and beauty in the world.” Dr. August Pernsteiner, Visionary Each and every Ilumen 28M is a thing of beauty, a bespoke synthesis of technology and design that offers a personal palate of options with which owners can create their own personalised haven of comfort, luxury and superlative style. Sleek and seductive, this 21st century motor yacht cannot help but stir emotions as it glides through the water. Key features include floor-to- ceiling glazing in the saloon and a flexible boarding platform that can be raised up and used as a diving board or lowered into the water to provide easy access for launching toys and tenders. Light flows freely from the windows and a skylight above the master cabin bed. The bedroom is connected via a sliding

hatch to a private terrace. Another key feature is the custom bar, made of stainless steel, backlit onyx and Foglizzo leather. Custom-made furniture and bulkheads finished in the most opulent materials such as backlit white onyx, ebony, white oak, silk, Zimmer and Rohde fabrics, suede ceilings and satin-like nubuck leather are just some of the possibilities, but as Head of the Dominator Bespoke Office, Giulia Sigismondi, says: “The interior dressing of each yacht is a highly personal affair, so we work with the owners to make it a bespoke design that fits them like a glove in terms of taste and preferences.”. The interior distribution is such that it creates a sense of being on a much larger ship, a sensation realised in part through tall ceilings and the use of glassed areas that allow natural light and seascapes to illuminate the luxurious cabin spaces. Nowhere is this approach more impressive than in the skylight and private deck of the master cabin and it helps to create a truly privileged private space. Integrated into the interior are ‘zero impact’ invisible speakers in VIP and guest cabins that transform any surface they are embedded into (be it concrete, fibreglass, wood, marble, stone or glass) into a high performance audio system. This stateof-the-art system, incorporating a sound masking system in the main salon and master cabin, provides an advanced audiovisual, communication and entertainment system that includes a private cinema projector on the sundeck. Though it varies from client to client, the interior of an Ilumen evokes a subtle harmony of contemporary style and timeless sophistication. To achieve this we have painstakingly selected the finest materials and most prestigious names, such as the Futuristic collection by Hèrmes, which we believe embodies the perfect blend of elements. The Ilumen range remains at the cutting edge of development, with two brand new 28M yachts, Zalanka and Cadet V, being presented in 2018. A perfect blend of advanced engineering and made-to-order craftsmanship, these exquisite yachts are each a unique showpiece of style and power.

Mengi Yay have created a retro style 27 meters yacht built entirely out of wood. The one-off custom build Seleda looks similar to other navetta yachts on the market, but instead of being built from steel and aluminum it is constructed from wood. Internal frames and beams of the 90ft long, semi displacement yacht, are sapelli and mahogany, while the rest of the boat is made out of plywood. The outer shell has been laminated and painted. Her twin 800 hp MAN engines will nudge her to a top speed of 17 knots with a cruising speed of 14 knots.

THE FIRST BOATS SAILING ALL AROUND THE WORLD WERE MADE OF WOOD. SO, WOODEN BOAT BUILDING IS AS OLD AS HUMAN HISTORY. NOW, WE ALL ARE SURE THAT THIS MATERIAL HAS PROVEN ITSELF FOR DURABILITY AND RELIABILITY. IT IS BOTH ECONOMIC AND FAST AS IT IS A LIGHTER BOAT WITH THE SAME MACHINERY. CLASSIC AND OLD-STYLE BOATS ARE NOW ONLY USED BY ENTHUSIASTS.

Huseyin Mengi, of Mengi Yay, said “The first boats sailing all around the world were made of wood. So, wooden boat building is as old as human history. Now, we all are sure that this material has proven itself for durability and reliability. It is both economic and fast as it is a lighter boat with the same machinery. Classic and old-style boats are now only used by enthusiasts. However, the Gulet style (wooden vessels) and classic boats are quite common in the southern part of Turkey, Bodrum.”. The project is inspired from a combination of trawler and motor yacht which are apparent with different lines of the design. The superstructure represents a motor yacht whereas the hull is obviously a trawler. The exterior of Seleda features strong lines, with lots of space to enjoy the sunshine on deck. She picks up on two key superyacht trends that have emerged over recent years, by making the most of glass and showcasing a bold hull colour. The white superstructure combined with the extraordinary turquoise hull is complimented by teak decking.

Wood was not only used in the construction of the yacht, but Mengi Yay has also utilised the material to add a traditional touch to her modern exterior. Sections of capping rail on both decks and wooden details in the large portholes are used as a reminder of the shipyard’s carpentry skills. The innovative and modern lines of the exterior design can also be seen in the interior design. The interior, by BTA Design, is styled in light creams with accents of darker greys and browns.

54 Luxe et al

Seleda’s generous volume is spacious enough to accommodate 8 guests and 4 crew members. On the lower deck the owner’s cabin is spacious and includes an electric fireplace to be used in the winter months. Also on the lower deck is a master cabin located forward and two guest cabins facing each other in the middle section. The master suite is completed in white and greys, with an ensuite featuring his and hers sinks. On the main deck the 30m² saloon is spacious and inviting with facing sofas, deep windows on the port side offering vast views of the sea and space for six to dine. Interior and exterior decks have been kept simple through the use of functional furniture pieces. The transforming seating area on the main deck bow was the biggest desire of the client. It is intended to be used as a comfortable resting area, dining area and sunbathing space. The sundeck is where guests will find an oversized U-shaped lounge for relaxing during short trips between anchorages. Seleda’s tender is also stowed on the aft section of the deck which is launched with a dedicated crane. The client was continually involved in the design phase so Seleda reflects their soul and taste in all aspects. Mengi Yay is one of the most longestablished yacht building companies in Turkey with experience since 1964. The company was established by Ramazan Mengi in Ayvansaray in a small workshop. Later Muzaffer Yay became a partner with Ramazan Mengi and they combined their surnames, establishing Mengi Yay in 1985. All of their yachts, from the design to launching into the water, are carried out with great care by the expert team working in cooperation with the industry’s leading shipbuilding engineers. Behind this luxury, which is prepared with every detail thought and tested, lies the union of highly reliable infrastructure, experienced and perfectionist Turkish engineering and workmanship.

This concept is inspired by the world’s leading shipyards and naval architects who have delivered not just yachts, but dreams. SquaredMK Ltd aim to create beautiful architectures capable of transmitting emotions, but also ensuring their clients fulfil their dreams. Taste and beauty are surely personal, but the aim is to identify the codes and meanings that change simple objects into iconic and timeless creations. NYX was designed with extra attention focused to the aesthetics and proportions of the yacht. Squared MK Ltd designed its primary purpose to express the power and beauty of an iconic vessel, the kind of superyacht that catches attention and is unique in its kind. As a one-off design, NYX has unique details, with spaces designed and thought to be modern, light and fascinating, whilst still functional. NYX is power, beauty and seduction. Definitely a superyacht for an owner who enjoys style, performance and is after something unique and sophisticated. The designer’s objective was to create a challenging 75 metre vessel with strong character, for an active owner passionate about yachts, architecture and driven by a dynamic yet charming lifestyle. With a crew of 20 the NYX superyacht can accommodate up to 14 guests. A one of a kind creation, NXY is designed to be stylish, beautiful and overall incomparable. She is functional, yet harmonious and elegant. Some of her interior features, such as the owner’s deck with private balcony and Jacuzzi, the underwater level beach club, folding terrace and private bar, the circular pool and the iconic stairways, adds rare beauty to this project. Many concepts nowadays are too extreme and inefficient. The designer’s goal was to create a vessel that not only is unique, but remains functional, performs well and respects traditional aspects of yachting that cannot be ignored. Talking to Luxe et al, Stefano Koukas, Director of SquaredMK Ltd, explains why the design works, “Many concepts nowadays are too extreme and inefficient.

Our goal was to create a vessel that not only is unique, but remains functional, performs well and respects traditional aspects of yachting that cannot be ignored.”. He continued “Design is not only a matter of taste. Yachts, like any other product, must perform well under many aspects. To do so they have to answer a very long list of criteria and regulations. Successful outcomes are the result of great thinking, experience and researching. Designing and building a vessel is a great challenge that requires synergy, cooperation and creativity not only to style but to solve all the obstacles you face on the way.”. Recently shortlisted for the Concept Over 40m Award in The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2018, Stefano explains why he feels the awards are important, “In architecture and design visibility and legitimacy are extremely important. Any award is and should be taken very seriously as it represents a great opportunity for new and established professionals to face each-other in a fair ground and not only promote their images, but also set the standards of our industry and acknowledge the challenge for the future. Awards have a great weight in the career of any professional just like medals do in athletes’ life.”. SquaredMK is a new and visionary studio born from the dream of doing design at another level. Continually challenging themselves to achieve innovation through thinking and dreaming at a level that only architects and designers can do. Stefano explains “In an overcrowded market in which the majority of the vessels look the same, many owners and builders want to explore new concepts, but at the same time they are not comfortable with starting projects that represent a higher risk for both of them. Designers have not only to design and create, but they must know how to sell their ideas and this becomes extremely difficult without a solid and feasible project. The support and collaboration of builders, brokers, captains and visionary owners are the only way to achieve and deliver real unique and well thought superyachts. Without this cooperation, designers cannot make what they do best - shape dreams.”. NYX represents a modern generation of yachts designed by new professionals that will carry on the great heredity of yacht design. NYX is a one of kind creation, designed to be stylish, beautiful and over all incomparable.

MANY CONCEPTS NOWADAYS ARE TOO EXTREME AND INEFFICIENT. OUR GOAL WAS TO CREATE A VESSEL THAT NOT ONLY IS UNIQUE, BUT REMAINS FUNCTIONAL, PERFORMS WELL AND RESPECTS TRADITIONAL ASPECTS OF YACHTING THAT CANNOT BE IGNORED.

On this project Cantiere delle Marche proved once more their flexibility and uncompromising commitment to fulfil their client’s wishes. A luxury vessel, Hyhmä is a crossover between a go-anywhere expedition yacht and a contemporary ‘navetta’ and encompasses all qualities and characteristics that have made Cantiere delle Marche’s reputation. This yacht has many surprises up its sleeves that need time and attention to be absorbed and fully appreciated. With nicely designed details and a cohesive design, it feels much bigger inside and has facilities rarely found on any other yacht of this size. Hyhmä spreads over three decks with comfortable accommodations for up to twelve guests in five cabins the most striking being a full beam Owners stateroom forward on the main deck. Social areas include an airy, open plan saloon on the main deck and a panoramic upper saloon plus fully appointed outdoor areas on all decks and a panoramic Sun deck. Nauta Yachts have worked to enhance the amount of interior volume while creating large aft decks without making the yacht feel cramped in any way. On all decks, giant windows bathe the living spaces with light. In the lobby the guest staircase winds around a powerful two-storey sculpture of two dolphins. This is a wow feature that strikes when ascending from the guest lobby to the upper saloon. Although Hyhmä is a family yacht with lots of family-oriented design input, charter operation was planned so the interior design suits both. The red thread throughout the interiors is a calm and relaxing feel. The style is not challenging but is inviting and extremely comfortable in its ambiance. Soft colours varying from pale to cream brown are coupled to dark brown and pastel greens while 30% gloss natural oak of flooring and furnishings contrasts with 100% gloss ebony and stainless steel are used in

details, niches, ceiling frames, AC outlets. Recessed baseboards of both built-in furniture and beds hide stripe lights that add drama to the linear, almost minimalist design. Leather is a key material on Hyhmä. It adds softness and represents a decorative feature itself. Each deck features its own leather hue: orange on the main deck, dark brown on the upper deck, light brown in the night quarters on the lower deck. The Main Deck saloon sets the tone of the overall interior design and decoration. It features a fluffy rug by Sartori that delimitates the conversation area where an L-shaped sofa and two armchairs by Flexform, and coffee table create a fully appointed lounging area. The saloon is divided in two areas by a low cabinet. The dining table, forward, is encircled by orange leather chairs by Poltrona Frau, Montera Collection. The cockpit, shaded by the Upper Deck overhang, is seamlessly connected to the main saloon thanks to large sliding doors. Sofa and armchairs by Paola Lenti dominate this al fresco lounging area opening onto a large and scenographic aft stairway which leads down from the cockpit to the transformer beach platform. The full beam Owner’s suite is the most private area on the main deck. The cabin has a centrally placed double bed, a breakfast nook to starboard and a sofa/day bed to port side. The en suite bathroom, accessed through a dressing room, has a shower stall with steam generator – a true haven of calm and relaxation – a large basin in Pietra Serena, a grey sandstone appreciated for both its warm grey colour and soft touch, and separated toilet. The skylounge on the upper deck features a chocolate brown leather wall fore that rises up from the main lobby underlining an open-plan feeling with connection between decks. The upper saloon features an inviting sofa by Flexform and gracious armchairs by Minotti in green tones that contrast nicely with predominantly dark

leathers. An open-air dining can be enjoyed in the aft terrace. When underway, a Nautic 6.2 by Cobra Ribs tender is hosted in a cradle located at the aft end of this deck. “Providing owner and guests with important spaces outdoor was our aim,” Pedol remarks. A large terrace overlooking the sea, the Sun deck is dedicated to lounging, sunbathing and relax. A nicely shaped hardtop provides shading and protection to those who seat at the dining table or at the bar equipped with grill and all appliances for cooking and preparing cocktails. At the aft end of the deck, guests who yearn for blistering sun can lay down on comfy sofas and sunbeds. Another example of the excellent use of outdoor areas is the splitlevel lounging area fore of the wheelhouse. Lower deck they succeeded in creating an airy feel despite they had to deal with a more confined space. The lower deck’s guest area is a clear example of how space is treated on board. It looks simple and symmetrical but it was quite a feat to achieve such a functional use of space. Two Vip and two twin cabins with pullman beds, all with en suites, open onto a small lobby. The guest area has a direct passageway to the crew area that facilitates service aboard. Lower Deck crew quarters include 4 cabins, one for the Captain and three with bunk beds for the crew. All crew cabins have bathrooms with shower. The crew mess is on the Main Deck near the galley featuring Miele appliances. In the words of Mario Pedol: “Hyhmä expresses sober, elegant and seductive strength. This explorer yacht communicates its uncompromising seaworthiness through straightforward volumes combined with strong and decided lines in elements such as the shapes of the windows and portholes. Her hull and Top are in dark olive green that contrasts nicely with the white superstructure. While she picks up some of the features that made her predecessor, the CdM Nauta Air 108’ Narvalo, an international prize winner, Hyhmä manages to even improve on them”.
