The recent International Design & Architecture Awards were nothing short of magnificent; the projects were incredible, the Awards Ceremony was fabulous and the voting? Wow did you guys vote!

We received 54,846 verified, completed, individual votes this year over the four week voting period, which is incredible. It took you an average of 43 minutes each to vote, so I am fairly certain the projects held your interest.

Personally I see projects as and when they are short listed, but it is not until the voting stage when I can actually see the projects collectively and appreciate just how much inspiration and talent there is out there. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t vote of course, but I can flick through projects and share the

inspiration other voters and competitors will feel.

I am very pleased therefore to give you this month the first of three winners issues and the chance to see the winning design schemes in greater detail.

Elsewhere we are looking at kitchens the heart of every home and the room where technology, practicality and aesthetics blend seamlessly. We are also looking ahead to our tenth anniversary year in 2016 and a series of events to celebrate this, the first being in Venice once again in May 2016. It is incredible to think design et al will be ten years old. Time has moved so quickly, and the design and publishing world are a very different place than they were a decade ago.

We look forward to and relish the dynamics of the next decade.

Pendolino Maggiore Chandelier The Pendolino Maggiore, designed and created by Rocco Borghese Chandeliers, is an absolutely stunning, bespoke Murano glass stairwell feature, perfect for any home or venue.

This chandelier is created in intricately hand-blown Murano streamed glass.

A wonderful accent in the feature, the glass is detailed with lines that not only enhances the piece itself but transforms interiors with captivating streams of sublimely refracted light.

The striking clear glass design is made up of tiers in random length droplet pendants, beautifully interspersed with a subtle yet exhilarating mix of frosted glass droplets.

This sensational lighting feature has no metal frame to detract from the brilliance of the glass as each individual blown glass pendant is delicate enough so that the entire body of the chandelier can be suspended using clear wires. The absence of a metal frame in the meticulously designed piece not only adds interest and looks absolutely exquisite but also addresses constraints regarding the weight of a large chandelier and makes the Pendolino Maggiore Chandelier an ideal showcase for their unique bespoke service.

Headed by Rocco Borghese, the designer distinguĂŠ, Rocco Borghese Chandeliers are able to execute to the finest specification our clientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; requirements, whatever they may be - in this case for an impressive yet refined lightweight stairwell chandelier.

W Chicago Lakeshore by Meyer Davis Studio, Inc. Meyer Davis has designed a distinctly modern urban escape filled with dramatic glamour for the newly renovated W Chicago Lakeshore.

Meyer Davis’ design concept for the W Chicago Lakeshore was formed on the basis of three intrinsically architectural themes – Chicago’s history and tradition of architecture, the hotel’s iconic Lake Shore Drive locations, and shadows and reflections of innovation. The design showcases the confluence of a vibrant world-class city meeting the serene edge of Lake Michigan and pays homage to the architectural ingenuity of Chicago. It mirrors the city’s energy, invention and industrialism. Sleeker, sexier public areas include a new signature farm-to-table restaurant, a living room concept space, and an expansion of the hotel’s prime meeting and event space, which boasts 360 degree views of the city.

W Lakeshore is characterized by modern lighting, energetic colors, contemporary furniture and sleek finishes that mimic and reflect the vibrant city skyline and reveal layers of the city’s architectural ingenuity. Vivid, modern and textured lighting energizes public areas and is used to create specific architectural moments. This is seen with the alternating digital images above the “conversation pods” – intimate, semi-private lounge settings separated by beaded drapery adjacent to the bar. A luxurious elements is Meyer Davis’s modern Heatherwick-inspired “oyster” that frames the rear of the restaurant.

520 guestrooms and suites uphold the theme of shadows and reflections with metallic and lacquered finishes reflecting incredible views. The guestrooms showcase a palette of blues and greys, black and white, and a splash of chartreuse.

Additional touches include custom silver wire brushed wooden millwork, modern chandeliers, and graphic cushions and wall coverings made from artwork by Carsten Witte, as well as custom carpeting.

Less is More from In Light In Light focus on the diversity of light and lighting applications, as well as on technical knowledge in order to create lighting concepts, for floors as well as walls. In Light focus on the diversity of light application and possibility, as well as on technical knowledge in or to fulfil proper sensual lighting concepts.

The team found that the narrow, but long living room did not give too many opportunities to create a cosy and relaxing environment with interior furnishings, but for the family it was important to live in an area where they can relax, enjoy and recharge their batteries. Another challenge for the In Light team, was to integrate the kitchen as a part of the living area.

The use of light can create amazing and joyful ambiances with using a lot of space.

“ It was established very early on that the client wanted his home to be as ‘Bespoke’ as possible within the parameters of the budget with an emphasis on understated luxury. ”

There is a defined difference in the way Stephen Clasper Interiors approach a project. Supported by their own in house design and manufacturing teams, every task is undertaken with passion, focus and determination. The defining element of their Fairlanes project was the client’s determination that the design must be unique to his new home. The team not only surpassed the expectations of their client but created a truly awe-inspiring and awardwinning design.

Having seen Stephen Clasper’s extensive and impressive portfolio, the client requested the company’s direct involvement. The Client was building a new property on a site in North London. The planned floor space was approximately 18,000 square feet including a large basement area with an underground garage. In the initial stages of the project the property was entirely the basement level, therefore the Stephen Clasper Interiors could work in conjunction with the building contractor, architect and the client to establish feasibility, concepts and room layouts.

Stephen Clasper Interiors were appointed by the client to design the interiors including all the furniture which was custom-made.

In essence this was to be an interior design, furnishings-commission and turnkey project.

As the client was well travelled and familiar with high end finishes, it was clear that the team were going to have to exceed all expectations with the quality of what was delivered. Other elements of the design were inspired by some images the client had shown early on. The client has a 30m yacht and this was also discussed as a point of inspiration.

Therefore it was important that they worked with the best throughout the project. As Stephen Clasper Interiors design and manufacture furniture they were able to offer an entirely tailored solution to many parts of the property. From fitted to free standing, many items were uniquely designed as a one off for this client, all being complimented with fabrics, wallpapers and flooring chosen for each area specifically.

Accessories, special finishes and lighting were also integral to many areas and often incorporated within the furniture.

Consequently, innovation is prevalent in every area of this design. Despite the extremely time consuming nature of the process, the team were able to engage in a focused effort to deliver an exceptional result that not only solidifies the impressive nature of the project but highlights the exemplary talents of Clasper’s team.

Unusually for a project of this scale, there was no clear brief from the client so Stephen Clasper Interiors were initially asked to produce concepts of specific areas. It was established very early on that the client wanted his home to be as ‘Bespoke’ as possible within the parameters of the budget with an emphasis on understated luxury.

Many sketches followed long meetings getting an insight into how this property was going to be used by the family with particular emphasis on key areas like the Kitchen / family area, the basement garage and the Master suite.

The level of detail and investment within each element of this project would impress even the most scrutinising observer; everything from the lighting in the pool lounge to the console tables to the kitchen are one-of-a-kind, entirely unique designs.

From the finer details such as door handles to entire rooms; the thought and consideration to be implemented into every aspect is masterfully meticulous. The aforementioned doorhandles were crafted to order by a specialist metalworker and the full scale cinema room features secret doors. Every feature of the interior was designed with absolute clarity and purpose

Before the team began the process of drawing up and finalising plans, they had a day in London visiting many showrooms, studios and specialist suppliers including the Design Centre to get a better understanding of what the client liked; this led them to visit some of the capital’s most fabulous hotels

Whilst the detailed design is definitive throughout the palatial home, Stephen Clasper Interiors intelligently ensure the interior furnishings and finishes do not detract from the rooms’ functionality and purpose. The design compliments and highlights the room’s assets with natural

light maximised, and lighting installations used to illuminate the room’s best features.

Another vital aspect of the project’s success is the team’s ability to balance the desire to provide luxury living and the need for a versatile and adaptable home. It is very often the case that the most impressive ‘showhome’ style designs are entirely impractical for modern day life and thus the design, however stylish, becomes redundant as it fails to permit a lived in factor. In this case however, Stephen Clasper Interiors’ careful consideration for not only design but functionality has paid dividends as the project showcases the very best in stylish interiors and an upgraded standard of living.

Unsurprisingly, the overall tone of this substantial project is one of significant luxury. High-gloss marble floors, decadent velvets and richly textured feature walls punctuate an otherwise seamlessly chic and stylish design. The rich caramel, purple and bronzed tones of this house make a striking yet inviting environment. Solid masculine materials such as deep wood tones and metallic installations are balanced with tactile fabrics and curvaceous sculptures for an eye-catching and harmonious design.

Given the level of planning and purveying to have informed this design, it is perhaps no surprise that this design was crowned the Winner at International Design and Architecture Award 2015 for the Residential £2.5 - 5 Million Award in the Interior Design category. This year saw some of the finest projects compete and an elite collection of the best designers enjoyed a brilliant event at London’s exclusive Hurlingham Club. Stephen Clasper Interiors received much deserved praise for the project and it is particularly satisfying to see such a noteworthy design brought to the attention of industry greats and premier peers.

The client was of course incredibly impressed with the project and the team’s overwhelming efforts. It is certain that future collaborations will enjoy similar levels of engagement from Clasper and his incredibly talented team. Winning both the award and admiration is what the project and the team entirely deserve and design et al, like so many others, await their future projects with eager anticipation.

Design is, by its very nature, a subjective medium. Equally, judging design excellence is a divisive medium yet each year The International Design and Architecture Awards sees voting increase and standards continually increase. Whilst every purveyor has a particular preference, one element which remains undisputed is the importance of functionality within a concept.

It is so often the case that family life makes strenuous demands on a house’s style; just as the architectural aspects of the home may need to adapt as time goes on and the family expands, so too must the interior design aspect.

The greatest designers are those able to facilitate the necessary elements of a fully functioning family home together with the exemplary elegance and vitality of a typical showhome.

Additionally, there was equal emphasis on the importance of maintaining a personal, private and family-centric narrative within the home. In light of this, the team incorporated a private living space, study and bespoke-design bedrooms for each member of the family to ensure they enjoyed the same level of luxury as their guests each day.

Etcetera Livings’s latest award winning project is a perfect example of balanced, versatile design being used effectively within a family residence. The winner of this year’s Residential £5 Million Plus award in the Global category was Etcetera Living’s Reserve Villa project.

The Master Bedroom was an extremely important aspect of this project. The design team created a master suite similar to a penthouse apartment in a premier hotel.

Spacious, decadent and tranquil; the room provides a nest within the large family home to escape, unwind and relax.

The company were presented with an empty shell and essentially tasked with designing an entire homespace for a modern Middle Eastern family. The essence and soul of the concept behind “The Reserve” project was to create a beautiful, bespoke living environment which captures the imagination of the client. The end result was one of absolute excellence; Etcetera provide a masterclass in how luxury and a modern style can synergize into a family orientated comfortable living space.

The oversized room compromises a walkin dressing room, en-suite, living area and entertainment area featuring Etcetera’s tailor-made TV unit; a beautiful piece of art in its own right. This master bedroom is just one highlight of a truly exceptional project however it encapsulates the entire ambience of the villa and Etcetera Living’s design philosophy. Chic, contemporary and captivating; it is a space which is full of style and functionality; the pillars of design excellence. The combination of ivory, grey and purple works remarkably well for both husband and wife to create a room that combines both masculine and feminine aspects in harmony.

The villa was designed around the needs of the client’s family with particular focus on specialised, independent entertainment areas for visitors. During the process Etcetera’s extensive experience in the Middle Eastern market impressed the client enough to grant the design team free rein. The Dubai-based firm were able to incorporate each of the clients design desires and specific requirements into the brief, together with their own signature style for a truly tailored and polished experience.

It is perhaps no surprise, then, that Etcetera’s design team have since described the experience as ‘all in all a dream project’ given the incredible, enviable synergy between both the client-designer relationship and the project as a whole.

The villa was commissioned by a private client who had already bought a villa in Al Barari and wanted the same standard of work as they expanded their property

portfolio. Etcetera Living were focused on creating a design which not only promised to showcase standout style but also assist a busy family in their every day lives. The brief comprised of particular entertainment elements including a game-and-relaxation room, home cinema and an expansive, adaptive social space. The family often had guests to stay and therefore Etcetera’s team decided to incorporate various aspects of versatile design such as twin beds, spacious guest rooms and guest areas independent from the family space.

The colour scheme for the house was a continuation of this. The combination of grey and purple to ensure a balance masculine and feminine elements could coexist. The completed project surpassed all expectation; from both the client and the Design team!

The overall ambience is one of tranquillity and harmony whilst the house itself can play the perfect host to a large family party or social event.

There are many aspects of this project which make it a worthy winner of this year’s award. However, the team’s ability to establish a comfortable, luxury family home within the boundaries of exemplary design is an exceptional feat. It is certain that ‘The Reserve’ is set to be anything but; a firstchoice, first-class example of finesse and function.

South Kensington Apartment by Keir Townsend The brief was to create a contemporary open plan entertaining and dining space for a City professional with a love of fine wine.

To achieve this, Antiqued mirrors were used on the two columns of the kitchen island to conceal the immovable pipework and visually extend the space. Underneath these there are two symmetrically positioned wine coolers, which face the dining and living space in order to display the collection of wines and allow for ease of access when entertaining.

Several slabs of granite threaded with iron pyrite or ‘fool’s gold’ as it is commonly known, were hand selected from the quarry for this bespoke dining table and the same stone was used for the worktops and splash backs, creating continuity between the kitchen and the dining zones. The client was keen to have a single slab dining table, so the design had to work around the constraints of what was possible to get into the 9th floor apartment. To complement the table, black woven leather and patinated metal frame chairs were selected.

The Bronzed diffuser glass ‘chandelier’, was specially made to Keir Townsend’s design in order to add an element of Art Deco, which the client is particularly fond of. Dimmable LEDs were added underneath the cabinets to enhance the atmosphere through accent lighting. A timber flooring was used throughout, which was specially created with hard wearing pigment in a bespoke colour to complement the rest of the swatch.design meets all of the clients’ wishes and needs; a high-end spec setting, up to date appliances and the ability to entertain in a luxurious atmosphere.

Contemporary Hornchurch Kitchen by Definitive Interior Design This contemporary family kitchen was designed for a long narrow space with a clever lighting plan for entertaining purposes.

The design brief was to overcome a major flaw in the misconstruction of a long and narrow extension and create a stylish and functional family kitchen and dining area with an exciting lighting plan for parties and entertaining guests. White gloss cabinets were mandatory and the space needed to be practical for family get togethers, children’s tea parties and the family’s huge dog running in and out from the garden.

The client discovered his lateral extension had been built 3m deep instead of 4m and was advised by three kitchen designers he would be unable to install an island, top of his wish list, in his kitchen plans. Presented with this dilemma, Anita proposed reversing the standard ‘cabinets around the perimeter’ kitchen layout with the installation of 3.2m double sided island in which to house the appliances and pan storage and a bank of floor to ceiling cabinets across one wall to optimize vertical space. In addition, she proposed breaking up the expanse of white gloss with the bank of metallic grey cabinets to create a striking contrast and installing beautiful silver quartzite riven slate on the floor for both their hard wearing practicality and stunning appearance. Furthermore, the bespoke dining table was designed with a complimentary Quartzstone top and polished stainless steel legs to perfectly fit the space for family gatherings. The initial design dilemma resulted in an inspired and perceptive plan whilst alluding the sense of space over a narrow footprint and subsequently provided a striking and ambient cooking and entertaining area perfect for both day to day family living and hosting fabulous parties.

Six Bedroom Family Home, Kingston upon Thames by LINLEY Inspired by the design of the LINLEY Helix dining table, the kitchen combines traditional cabinet-making with sleek, contemporary design.

Housed at Laurel Grove, a stunning new-build family home within a secluded private estate in the London Borough of Kingston upon Thames, this elegant family kitchen demonstrates all that is intrinsically LINLEY: unrivalled quality, the finest British craftsmanship, innovation and attention to detail.

For this project the LINLEY design team were tasked with creating a bespoke kitchen equipped for the demands of family life while also providing space for entertaining guests. In the style of a smart, city residence, but with the added benefit of an abundance of space and natural light flooding through large windows and French doors, the Laurel Grove kitchen represents open-plan living at its very best.

Taking cue from the colours and materials of the Helix motif on the dining table, the kitchen pairs specially dyed dark grey solid oak cabinetry with a hand painted soft grey finish. The overall design is described as a LINLEY Profile Kitchen and incorporates many innovative touches. The LINLEY profile design is highlighted by polished nickel strip detailing which, as well as providing the consistent linear detail throughout the kitchen, cleverly incorporates the custom-built polished nickel hinge mechanism, an example of the efficiency of LINLEY engineering. The drawers and cupboards are finished with hand engineered nickel handles with chamfered edges that inform the rest of the design: The cabinetry features the same chamfer detail, as do the drawer insides and worktop edges, softening otherwise blunt edges. Created with longevity in mind, this kitchen has hardwearing Caesarstone composite worktops, designed to endure the rigours of family life.

Casa Sol by Taylor Interiors This newly built luxury modern villa has the most stunning sea views. The villa was furnished for a Norwegian client as their summer holiday retreat. Taylor Interiors were very fortunate that the client allowed us to work with some of the best Italian brands and got adequate financial budget. We were granted a lot of freedom in terms of selecting the items and fabrics for soft furnishing. The client also supported our selection of art. The house is very specious and most of the rooms enjoys stunning sea views. The villa is airy and very light, and we wanted to make sure that the kitchen worked within this environment.

The kitchen employs clean lines. Brushed steel and slate were used to contrast with a stunning natural stone wall at one end of the kitchen. Simple white transparent curtains were used also which transformed the kitchen space into a cool and etherial environment. The kitchen consists of a large central brushed steel island which houses the sink and cooking facilites.

Above this floats a stainless steel extractor, which when silhouetted against the natural stone wall backdrop, showcases the stunning contrast of materials. A wall of dark grey cupboards units monopolise a further wall, whos exterior material reflects the natural outside light around this calming space. A further island of white high gloss units is set at right angles to the first. Once again this white reflective covering disperses light around this modern yet functional space. There are two separate dining areas, one housed internally which is bright and has stunning views to the outside of the property. The second area is covered and enjoys magnificent views to the ocean.

Looe Beach House by Camellia Interiors The clients approached Camellia Interiors to oversee and project manage the renovation of their entire property and grounds.

On an all new engineered timber floor in dark grey, the kitchen space is zoned into three separate areas. Each has its own materials, colour and texture - allowing for the open plan space to feel both spacious and intimate.

The dishwashing and wet areas are in wenge timber, the cooking and food preparation areas are in a dark grey matt laminate, the storage units are in glossy dark grey laminate and all areas have Silestone worktops in an off white. Materials were selected for both their functionality and high quality - perfect for a luxurious entertainment and social environment. A coffee machine and preparation space is another area within the kitchen, with the same materials as the ‘wet’ areas.

The kitchen’s dining space features a beautiful, large table, perfect for socialising. The wall of glass windows allow for the family to cook, dine and entertain with the breathtaking Cornish views right in front of them. By installing sliding doors, the clients can extend their kitchen area to the decking, where they can enjoy the outdoors in luxury. The overall kitchen design meets all of the clients’ wishes and needs; a high-end spec setting, up to date appliances and the ability to entertain in a luxurious atmosphere.

Elica Elica has introduced Grid, an 800mm wall-mounted sloping hood in stainless steel and clear tempered glass. This high performance hood incorporates a high efficiency motor with three power levels plus a boost giving a maximum airflow of 650m3/hour and yet has an A class energy rating. Other features include dual aspiration area for effective extraction and macro-perforated steel filter with Elica Top Filtering technology for efficient grease filtration, infrared touch control for minimalist design and LED strip lighting for effective and natural lighting. It can be installed in recirculating or duct out versions and the minimum noise level is only 44dB. For those wanting unobtrusive air filtering closer to the ceiling but who have limited or no space for ducting, Elica’s Cirrus hood is an excellent solution. Finished in white glass, Cirrus has a sleek, minimal design – combining high-performance and low energy consumption. It has strip LED lighting, is remotely controlled and easily installed – presenting an excellent extraction option for statement kitchen islands where a large, centrepiece hood is not desired.

In a city as famed for its architectural and design decadency as Vienna, designers can find inspiration at every corner. Whilst the Austrian city favours traditional European design for its buildings and public areas, internally there is something of a style revolution underway as the modern, minimalistic approach to urban living becomes increasingly influential.

Furthermore, it is becoming the preference for design to take inspiration from a global narrative, expanding the European style scope like never before.

As always, The International Design and Architecture Awards are ahead of the curve and already shining a spotlight on the key design trends set to take hold over the next few seasons. Therefore, an Asian-European collaboration was a welcome addition to this year’s short-listing portfolio.

Phuket-based design firm A2Zen Consulting is an interesting global-hybrid as their Thailand office houses a team of Italian designers working on an international collection of projects. Their stunning concept for a penthouse apartment. in central Vienna caught the attention of the design et al shortlisting panel and much admiration at the Hurlingham Club’s glittering ceremony.

A2Zen Consulting were comissioned by a private client to furnish the elaborate apartment of the residential complex in Vienna. The apartment is located on the two top floors of the Park Royal Palace Hotel, overlooking lush green Schönbrunn park, which gives the apartments their name. The Schönbrunn project presents a new urban lifestyle uniting comfort and privacy of a residential complex, with the free fruition of the amenities of a four star superior hotel.

The flats are distinguished by a large-scale architecture with great attention to the open areas such as terraces and roof gardens.

Whilst the project was focused on the entire apartment, the design brief called for particular attention to be given to the master bathroom. The client requested that this otherwise neglected space be transformed into luxurious, six piece bathroom which was modern in style and yet upheld traditional functionality.

A2Zen Consulting did not disappoint.

inspiration from exclusive hotel suites and polished private residences to create a room which fulfils its purpose with grace and style.

Perhaps as a reflection of traditional Asian beliefs about the purifying and spiritual nature of water; A2Zen Consultation’s design have created a calming, cleansing space which, though devoid of natural light, is a tranquil, luminous space.

The bathroom is located, almost in secret.

Behind a high-gloss door within the fullwall wardrobe instillation within the master bedroom, the bathroom does not impose or invade.

Inside the well proportioned room, A2Zen Consulting’s intelligent and inventive use of space is striking. A bathing-deck construction hosts a deep white corian bath whilst decorative ceramic elements add a personal touch. High-shine chrome fixtures such as the taps, towel rails and mirror accents bring a modern and ultra-defined tone to the space.

The traditional side-panel of the bath has been removed to reveal an impressive and creative storage solution; the simplicity of which is sure to inspire many similar installations to appear in modern bathrooms from now on. Storage and shelving also appear underneath the elongated, trough style sink which brings a sleek and subtly dramatic style to the space.

The bathroom was designed with the use of a combination of Persian Limestone for the floor and Striato Elegante on the walls.

In contrast, smooth, pure white corain was selected for the bathtub and skin area to ensure a modern accent as compliment the luxurious canvas created by the marble.

The clean, contemporary lines of this room are in stark contrast to the natural tones of the marble, with full functionality and storage, which combine beauty with practicality.

A2Zen Consulting have achieved something particularly praiseworthy within this project.

Their creative use of space and artistic combinations of materials have made a runof-the-mill-space into a remarkable one.

With each passing year the standard of applications presented to the International Design and Architecture Award’s shortlisting panel continues to impress and intrigue.

Whilst every award warrants admiration, there are some categories which, by their very nature, invite particular attention.

One such example is the Swimming Pool category; such is the level of architectural artistry and ingenuity deployed by designers when seeking to create a balance between water, light, space and design.

The winner of this year’s Swimming Pool award was British design firm NR Group.

Founded by their glamorous and talented principle Natalia Rotenburg. Rotenburg’s personal design journey began in Moscow but has since spanned the globe and continues to incorporate some of the world’s most luxurious locations and residences.

In this instance the firm were commissioned to create a subterranean paradise within a private residence in Berlin.

The pool was to form a key part of the entire concept as it was to be the centre of the home’s expansive leisure complex and be something of a pièce de résistance in a project which complete the home’s contemporary and modern-art inspired design.

At the start of the project Natalia and her team were presented with a very modern and clinical European design brief. NR Group were asked to combine modern interior design of the home and incorporate traditional materials such as a striking wooden staircase as a central feature. The team added their own creativity to the brief by implementing a stark element of contrast with an industrial glass installation adjacent to the feature staircase. This contrast acts as a highlight and showcases both materials, and their effects, beautifully.

The pool area has been designed with a feeling of space and integral tranquillity.

Influenced by the life-giving properties of water, Natalia and her team were inspired to bring the outdoors in by incorporating natural materials such as slate and wood throughout the design. To further enhance this motif, a mix of plants and a subtle waterfall located beneath an avenue of trees adds to the overall impression of the space being energised from within.

There is a definite sense of escapism to the space. This was a considered design decision

by Natalia and her team; who wanted to reward the client’s sense of self with an escape from their busy business life and even from the normality of their home. Within the pool area the design encourages total immersion in peace, nature and the cleansing power of water. The delicate lighting choices and suspended lanterns further enhance the relaxing, gentle ambience of the space.

It is often the case that the waterproof, ceramic and tile materials required to install a pool design can make the designated space seem cold or uninviting however this is not the case here. Natalia and NR Group have been able to created a space that offers a feeling of warmth, with an atmosphere reminiscent of an exclusive spa located in a sun-drenched, private holiday resort. The exposed wooden beams, lush green fauna and soft white pebbles appear borrowed from an elite PanAsian health club; several thousand miles from modern day Germany.

Therein lies the success of NR Group’s impeccable work.

An expansive feature wall provides an inspiring visual aspect to the space, whilst the exuberant green not only compliments the water’s own tones but provides an invigorating lift to a space which does not harbour a wealth of natural light.

NR Group have designed an interior that combines beauty with a precision and modern architecture in this functional home.

Thibault Van Renne Several months of detailed pixel by pixel designing went into creating this piece. The rug features fine intricate work that explores the boundaries of possibilities when using hand knotted weaving. An oriental design floats on a background that is designed to resemble icebergs upon seawater.

The subtle color combinations emulate those found in nature and have an ephemeral quality. These features give the piece depth and create the illusion of movement. At the end of the 6 months weaving time, the weavers cut out the design by hand to create a three dimensional effect. This unique piece with its striking combination of colours, textures and intricacies is eye catching and beautiful but also carries a poignant message that is extremely relevant to our current climate. Thibault Van Renne rugsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; superior quality is achieved by using selected natural raw materials and by applying authentic traditional production methods. Experienced local weavers work for them with Cashmere wool, natural silk, hemp and nettle. The pile and high knot density make for particularly strong and nearly indestructible rugs. All-natural vegetable pigments are also used exclusively to create the various colours. More attractive, more colourfast and better for the environment! The rugs are also washed and treated in an environmentally friendly way. AyKa Design â&#x20AC;&#x153;Textures was inspired by my travels to South America during my visits to Brazil and Argentina. Having seen the most amazing landscapes and colours, I was touched first hand by their many living abstract forms and the beauty of their surroundings. These forms inspired me to think about recreating these textures on a rug that would eventually inspire the end user and be seen as a piece of art.â&#x20AC;?

The objective was to create a three dimensional design in a two dimensional form that would also be functional for the end user. Art, Beauty and Comfort were the goals while trying to achieve a texture that was not easy to construct by hand by using the Tibetan Knot.

The silk yarns were first handspun creating additional various thickness which would enhance the design once flattened in a two dimensional form. Then they were first twin dyed twice to achieve a double tone on the yarns themselves giving a three dimension tone before weaving. The rug was looped tightly and as each color in the design was changed, the yarns were joined and knotted with threads hanging. These were kept until the finally finishing of the rug when carefully they were all hand cut at the end of the weaving at various heights to recreate the three dimensional element of the design.

The 500 square metre deluxe-design house is located by the Pearl River near China’s affluent Central Banking District in Guangzhou.

This luxurious property offers its professional owners the convenience of metropolitan life in South China while providing sophisticated East meets West lifestyle. With the double-volume living room, formal dining room, a sparkling bar area, 4 ensuite bedrooms and a game room, this unique property portrays modern oriental living. The interior ambience is one of contemporary chic and calm which remains reminiscent of modern EuroAmericana.

The overall design motif is an inspired example of authentic Oriental grace and elegance, the unmistakably feminine tones of the design bring a warm, calm presence to the space whilst the muted grey tones of the colour palette work in synergy with the solid, expansive textures of the hard-wood floors, marble and stainless steel details to maintain a balanced, masculine aspect to the entire project. The contrasting nature of these elements provide an essential, balanced harmony throughout the space.

Hanging Gardens Of Bali, Shortlisted for The Global Hotel Residence Category In The 2016 International Hotel & Property Awards The Hanging Gardens of Bali has 44 luxury villas designed with the Traditional Balinese elements, each with a private infinity plunge pool overlooking the Ayung river, with sensational views of the surrounding verdant gardens of this tropical resort.

The resort is situated in the steep rice terraces of Ubud and offers sweeping views across the Ayung River valley. Each luxury Balinese style private villa provides the perfect location to escape, relax and unwind. A private funicular provides easy access to the resorts facilities. The award-winning infinity pool emphasises the natural curves of the hillside. Created on two levels it is surrounded by stylish and comfortable sunbeds for ultimate relaxation.

Nature is a spectacle here with exotic trees and essences of the tropics including cocoa, coffee, durian and a variety of bamboos, flame trees and orchids creating a symbiosis of tropical life. The Resort also has one of the most spectacular Spaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on the Island. Located by the exotic river, the Spa Collection offers bespoke treatments at the luxurious areas, such as: The River Suite, River Bale or by the main astonishing swimming pool.

The favourite aspect of the project is the stunning split-level infinity pool, lined with Batu Candi stone and featuring a vast geometric wall of solidified volcanic ash, suspended high over the surrounding jungle, appears to float in its setting, giving swimmers the unique, immersive feeling of literally swimming above the treetops and the valley.

Dorothy Draper & Co Shortlisted In The Global – Hotel 50 – 200 Rooms Award The best part of this project is the transformation and rebirth of the hotel, bringing it to be once again at the centre of the Palm Beach social scene.

“This isn’t the real tropics – it’s Florida. So in this hotel, Dorothy Draper haven’t used the hot tropical colours. They used true Florida colours, colours that are bright and clear – the rich greens of the palms, the soft reds, pinks and yellows of the hibiscus, the bright blues and aquamarines of the sky and ocean. Look outside. Look how bright the light is. The colours are all right there,” says Carleton Varney about the project.

The entire hotel, from the lobby to the penthouse on the top floor, across the street in the seven villas, and the ballroom across the pool all received a complete re-imagining that has created a new Colony. The transformation from a typical, generic hotel to a true showpiece on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, a block from the ocean, is staggering.

The property now is the centre of the society scene, from receiving the who’s who of the world as guests to playing host to great events and other functions either in The Pavilion Ballroom or the terrace adjacent to the pool. The Royal Room Cabaret is a true Palm Beach tradition that was not forgotten. Giving new life to this classic space adds a touch of nostalgia. This project is so unique and special to the residents of Palm Beach as it truly is such an iconic property that now has new life and a fresh approach.

Tattu Restaurant Shortlisted For The Global – Restaurant Category The design brief for Tattu was to create a venue inspired by the history and cultural influence of body art, following its journey from East to West over centuries and acknowledging its significance as a unique art form.

Dividing the layout into three distinct areas, each one would need to reflect a different style of body art. Iconic imagery and symbols from each genre would be incorporated within the design details so that each space would be entirely distinctive, yet aesthetically linked together as part of the overarching narrative, creating a journey throughout the venue.

Typically masculine elements were to be harmoniously balanced with softer feminine details to create a considered equality within the design. Materials, textiles and furniture were to be bespoke, tailored to reflect the unique style of the venue, resonating the individuality of body art and pushing design boundaries to create a decadent yet functional setting.

The design and finished outcome of Tattu works because it has successfully created a sensory journey for its guests, engaging taste, touch, scent and vision from the moment they enter the venue. From the feel of materials and texture, to the subtle scent of incense chosen specifically for each area, each guest’s experience is completely individual. The volume of bespoke detail and craftsmanship that has been invested into the venue certifies its uniqueness, with a design that allows each guest to interpret it in their own way, drawing on the history and influence of body art and paying homage to the cultures and artists who’re responsible for this distinctive form of art having such a dominant place in society today.

Virserius Studio Shortlisted For The Americas/Caribbean – Restaurant Within A Hotel Award The Caribe Hotel is steeped in rich history. Conrad Hilton’s first hotel outside the continental US was the place to be during Hollywood’s Golden Age, enjoyed by celebrities, dignitaries and other people of note. It was also birthplace of the piña colada.

Virserius Studio wanted to honour that glory by making it the place for hotel guests and the local community to interact. The design reflects Puerto Rico’s strong cultural roots, and blends American sensibility with Latin passion. In choosing materials the designers had to consider both the environment and the number of people frequenting the hotel.

Virserius Studio’s wanted to strike that delicate balance between durability and honouring the design aesthetic. The designers goal was to make the bar area an outdoor living room, a true destination for guests, visitors, and the community to gather. To connect to its beautiful surroundings and nature, the designers took part of the white façade and put in operable doors to blur the lines between outdoor and indoor. It was also architecturally important to the designers to create depth and contrast. The layering effect was achieved by adding shutters for the windows made of treated aluminium finish to look exactly like wood shutters.

Virserius Studio’s introduced sculptural elements above the bar with the cascading sculpture based on ripples of water. Gloss and semi-gloss finishes on powder-coated aluminium were used to create subtle transition. The designers also created an undulating wood slat ceiling to add scale and warmth, making the area even more inviting.

Anantara Layan Phuket Resort & Spa Shortlisted For The Hotel 50- 200 Room Category, Asia Pacific Region Nestled on a secluded west-facing beach surrounded by forested hillsides, this luxurious Anantara resort and spa embraces its tranquil environment with distinctive design elements of southern Thai architecture and local nature.

Originally built in 2002, the hotel property underwent a comprehensive 18-month renovation with a design brief to create a fulfilling guest experience by harmonising the natural environment with traditional Thai architectural ambience and modern amenities. The resort’s idyllic setting, surrounded on three sides by National Park forest and fronting a private bay on the coast of the Andaman Sea, is accentuated by retention of existing large trees on the beach. The language of southern Thai architecture is expressed throughout, in roof shapes and plaster column details, constructed with locally-sourced building material using local construction methods, and featuring artwork by local artisans.

Decorative tiled floor patterns throughout the resort represent the coastal area’s rich marine life, while designs of water features and flame torches derive from local flowers. All 77 guestrooms are orientated for sea and sunset views. Nine room options comprise hillside rooms and suites, pool villas and beachside pool villas, in various configurations. Each airy vaulted interior contains subtle Thai design features complemented by contemporary styling and modern amenities. The resort’s dining options reflect its character: the signature Thai restaurant on a hillside location offers traditional cuisine paired with fine wines; and at beach level amid ocean breezes the menus of two restaurants include healthy options and Thai tapas. Bespoke evening gourmet dining on the beach, next to gently lapping waves, provides views across the resort which is subtly illuminated by flickering torchlight. Anantara Spa, with ancient Asian wellness traditions and pampering relaxations, completes the resort’s fulfilling Thai ambience.

London-based firm Peek Architecture and Design quite literally turned dust into gold with their Gatti House Kitchen Project. A true and inspiring example of architectural alchemy; this project was a worthy Winner of the International Design and Architecture Award for Kitchen Over £50,000 at this year’s ceremony.

Situated within a grade II listed building on the Strand, the property had been empty and neglected since the 1980’s. Peek Architecture and Design’s client were among many who had viewed the building, but the only ones who were brave and inspired enough to take on the long and complex road for its restoration.

The building itself had an intriguing and eclectic history as it was formerly used as the ostentatious private dining rooms for London’s famous Adelphi Theatre. The building was eventually owned by the famous entrepreneurs, the Gatti brothers, hence it was called Gatti House.

It took two tedious years of planning applications and working closely with Westminster City Council in order for a scheme to be approved which permitted the resurrection of the interiors and extensions to the rear and roof levels.

The client purchased the penthouse apartment and commissioned Peek Architecture and Design to oversee the main aspects of the renovation. The Gatti House restoration comprises four apartments and a restaurant which was installed in the existing building with its new roof and a penthouse apartment, known as apartment 4, is housed in an additional roof storey.

The penthouse was designed as a luxurious three bedroom city-dweller’s apartment with far reaching views of London’s iconic Strand. This substantial project saw Peek Architecture and Design shortlisted for 3 separate International Design and Architecture Awards but it was their overhaul of the kitchen space which saw them take to the stage and collect a trophy on the night.

The kitchen was designed to sit in the large open plan living space, flanked by tall windows over looking The Strand and with views to the Thames River.

There were several complex and demanding tasks facing Peek’s team throughout this rigorous restoration. The ornate plasterwork had to be lovingly restored in the room, and the design brief was to create a kitchen, which would sit well within this period setting, but with a touch of theatre about it, harking back to the days of the Gatsby-esque parties the actors of the Adelphi must have thrown in this great space.

The team crafted bespoke and considered solutions to many aspects of this design in order to ensure the building’s historical integrity remained prevalent. The extractor, for example, is a downdraft and the hob is induction, to ensure they are not noticed and do not protrude at all from any surface.

The sink and taps are housed in a marble clad recess, flanked by the deep blue units, which at night can be lit with an LED, to give the appearance of a of feature bar or servery, from across the room; this is reminiscent of the Adelphi’s own bar where actors would socialise after the show.

In addition to these intelligent design implementations, Peek’s team gave great consideration to the more practical elements of their architectural design. For example, the installation of a boiling water tap negates the need for any kettle to be stood on the worktop. Furthermore, the ovens are housed on the opposite side of the large island unit, which hides any hint of a the space being a ‘normal kitchen; upon first impressions.

For the design team the emphasis was very much on maintaining an ambience of entertainment, socialising and fun within the design. The island unit keeps a bar and restaurant type feel to the space whilst a thick mitred, honed, carrara marble work top, and antique mirror cladding to the rear side bring the glamour element.

Peek’s team were careful to ensure any

modern interventions were executed in a sympathetic manner and are largely unseen, and this new modern penthouse storey to the main building has additional insulation, generous glazing and is tucked away, hidden from the street views. The clients were encouraged to invest in a living green wall for the rear light well to improve air quality to nearby windows.

Within the apartment, there is a striking synergy between classic and contemporary styles which creates a unique setting with impressive impact. The feature staircase is formed from exposed metal and heavy-grain wood which represents the urban location of the home. This artistic installation and glass floor panel are a creative and effective way to join the spaces vertically. The design team also installed large sliding doors which give panoramic views of the city.

The Peek Architecture and Design team completed many acts of architectural excellence within this substantial project.

Their design creates a haven within a busy city whilst creating a modern home from a historical residence. The team were able to manage the generous and more limited proportions of the house effectively and overcome many of the technical difficulties experienced during restorations and rebuilds such as this.

The design team later commented they enjoy city-based projects as it is within these spaces that clever planning and problem solving comes into play. Peek Architecture and Design can be proud of what they achieved in this project as it surpasses the typical limits of architecture and design. It is of course entirely fitting that a former theatre hang-out should now be the star in its own right, as this showhome certainly is and it is equally likely that the entrepreneurial Gatti brother’s would approve of the space being reinvented and invested in. The old influencing the new is the story of design and in much the same way, this new addition to the winner’s list will surely influence and inspire many new projects at next year’s awards.

London based design firm Taylor Interiors enjoyed a particularly successful debut at the International Design and Architecture Awards this year. Their stunning designs were shortlisted for no less than twelve awards.

Their inspiring and exuberant founder Yvette Taylor possesses that illusive effortlessly flawless taste all designers aspire to achieve and her company’s substantial portfolio showcases some of the finest properties in the world. Chic, contemporary elegance is at the heart of their design ethos whilst their stylish additions are infused with creativity, care and all important practicality.

It was their Casa Allegra project in Marbella, Spain which best impressed the thousands of people who voted ahead of this year’s ceremony and Taylor Interiors took home two awards for this project including Living Space – Europe and Residential £5 Million Plus (Property Value).

The capacious villa, designed by architect, Diego Tobal, is one of the most exclusive in the Andalucía mountain area. Set high on a hill, yet designed with flat gardens and grounds, the front is exposed to striking ocean views, while to the left of the property, there are mountainous vistas.

The property is as striking as the landscapes surrounding it. The sumptuous interior spaces are designed to offer the client a holiday home to rejuvenate and restore in comfort, with carefully curated rooms for entertaining. Taylor Interiors worked closely with the architect to imagine the property in its final form. This creative and highly collaborative relationship was integral to the successful interior spaces, which offer many bespoke design details married with technical capabilities. To create drama on entering the villa, a custom-made six-metre long chandelier composed from 700 pieces of hand-blown glass in five distinct colours was commissioned for the entrance hall. The chandelier weighs 900kg and the ceiling was specially reinforced.

The entrance leads to an atrium where the ceiling is 8 metres high and the striking glass floor allows for views of the indoor pool below. Across the seven bedrooms, two transformed into home offices, and the bathrooms there is a repeated interior style that mixes a decadent masculinity with the finest natural materials, from marble to glass. A palette of chocolate black, cream and ivory repeats throughout.

It is only in the recreational spaces that the style diversifies. The home cinema is perhaps the best example of this diverse yet effective use of style. The cinema was meticulously designed by Taylor Interiors to meet the client’s specification for the highest level of technical advancement and sound quality, married with highly bespoke design features.

The result is a futuristic and luxurious space, which is stylistically glamorous while offering the highest level of comfort.

The lighting is the defining feature of this incredible space. It has been carefully curated to allow the viewers to become immersed in the cinematic experience.

The room, located in the basement of the property, can be lit in a choice of eight colours (pink, red, green, lime green, blue, turquoise, light blue and white) to create unique atmospheres and to match the mood of the film. The space provides the highest standard of acoustics and sound quality in home cinema design, kitted out with cuttingedge Bang & Olufsen speakers. The entire room was insulated with acoustic foam for a professional, industry-level .

On the ceiling, LED lights illuminate dramatically against a grid formed of fine wenge. Adorning the two walls that flank the seating area there are individual slats of oak, which again are lit by LEDs, creating a dramatic wave pattern.

In addition to the cinema room, the home’s designated entertainment room is decorated with the client’s vintage aviation posters and is complete with a professional dance floor and DJ booth. The purpose built room incorporates specialist lighting to add adding sharpness to the challenging layout of spaces where mixed ceiling heights play with visual scale. Taylor Interiors took full control of the interior and exterior, offering a clever combination of lighting components to illuminate this most ambitious and stylistic property.

The numerous outdoor spaces offer covered seating and socialising areas. The large sofa opposite the infinity pool is designed to allow the pool views to melt into the sea and to take in the incredible sunset views. by Manutti, is used throughout, ensuring the outdoor areas enjoy harmonious style synergy

The client requested a master bedroom that was dark and sumptuous, yet calm and rejuvenating. Taylor Interiors interpreted these desires by intimately blending glamorous furnishings with bespoke Smania products using the finest materials, which were all carefully sourced, such as the freestanding crocodile leather headboard with a chrome frame. The decadent chocolate black and grey palette is brightened with splashes of turquoise found in the meticulously selected triptych artwork

Though enticingly sensual, the bedroom also needed to be practical and is completed with motorized blinds, wardrobes and storage that do not deflect from the overall ambience.

The striking ceiling is a modern abstraction of a traditional vaulted ceiling and is a weightless cover. The frame is finished in an ivory hue and the centrepiece is oak panelling stained to wenge, which completes the room with a defining originality and style.

As contrast to the moody and stylised colour-scheme of the master suite, the living room was designed in ivory and white tones to promote the feeling of relaxation, calm and space within the room. These neutral tones are complimented by the room’s abundance of light as the space benefits from an extensive bank of windows which perfectly frame views of the swimming pool.

Accessories and soft furnishings such as the chocolate brown velvet cushions, with a subtle leopard print, marry the schemes together and ensure the living spaces feel cohesive but not washed out.

This is an incredible project which maximises the infinite potential of this unique and highly luxurious villa. Yvette Taylor and her team have successfully created the ultimate dream holiday home which will facilitate many decades of precious memories and enjoyable entertaining. A true talent, Taylor is a compliment to the industry and her elusive skills are set to feature in many more ‘winner’s lists’ for years to come.

This project is the epitome of style and design excellence and it was a joy to see it receive such favoured praise at this year’s awards by industry peers. Whilst this villa is undoubtedly worth it’s weight in gold, the secret of it’s stylish success is not so much the Midas touch as the Taylor-ed touch.
