Introduction Early indications at the time of going to press suggest that voting in The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015 has already surpassed expectations and will now be at a record high. This niche Awards Ceremony, which attracts entries from throughout the world, has now become our second most popular Awards in terms of voting and audience interaction. This is exciting news as commercial design is engaging us all and its innovation and inspiration is far-reaching. This annual book of short listed projects features the 2015 contenders; the increased category numbers this year allow for some of the most culturally diverse and thought provoking design schemes that we have seen for some time. Keep an eye out next month for the winners’ issue where we will be taking a closer look at some of the winning projects. Kind regards Joanne

Rhulani Resort Submitted by: Rhulani

Hotel Mulino Grande Submitted by: StudioTesei

Location: Madikwe Game Reserve, RSA Interior Designer: Upgrade Designer – Flipswitch Completion Date: 2015

Location: Cusago, Milan Architect: Antonella Tesei Interior Designer: Antonella Tesei Completion: 2012

Creating Rhulani has been both stimulating and inspirational. The owners set out to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, to build a modern-day refuge, an oasis of calm, a place to nourish the soul and lift the spirit. Redecorating Rhulani in 2014 was a complex and subtle job: it is a luxury, five-star lodge with all the services and amenities of a five-star hotel – but the owners want their guests to feel, smell, see and hear the bush, so they take great care in creating the perfect balance of stimuli. Their objective is to create a unique Rhulani feeling. The colour palette of brown, beige and terracotta that are inspired by the changing colours of the Earth, with added splashes of red and yellow. The addition of yellow and coral red symbolises the African sunrise and sunset. The earthy tones are embedded in nature. In much the same way, Rhulani was designed and built to blend as much as possible into its surroundings. It is only when you are at Rhulani and observe its incredible wildlife that you truly appreciate how perfectly all the elements of nature interact – as they always have.

The Hotel Mulino Grande is the result of the transformation of a Sixteenth Century water Mill within the Agricultural South Park of Milan. The project involves both contemporary design and attention to detail, preserving the charm of history and the vitality of nature. The hotel hosts 21 rooms and suites, meeting rooms, Spa and Il Magiono Restaurant. It is made up of two main blocks, both organized on two levels, which communicate across a central garden open to the surrounding rural landscape. The water mill building built on a bridge over the Soncina Canal hosts a reception room, a lounge, a bar and a restaurant on the ground floor and four suites on the first floor. The presence of the water flow, determining for the productivity of the Mill in the past, today gives a particular aesthetic attraction. The metallic paddles of the mill inspired Antonella Tesei to choose Cor-ten steel as a privileged material to design many architectural interior elements, fencing and railing which interpret the movement of water and sheaves of grain. The original volumes of the rooms have been preserved as well as materials terracotta, the stone of the floors and wooden beams. The glass bridge, over the water canal, overlooking the iron paddle reaches the lounge area with the stone and wood old three grinders completely restored. The lighting design project creates visual comfort and highlights the beauty of the structures, the colures, inspired by the Renaissance paintings, and the contemporary furnishing elements.

Fogo Island Inn Submitted by: Saunders Architects Location: Fogo Island, New Foundland, Canada Date completed: May 2013 Architect: Todd Saunders, Saunders Architecture Interior designer: Rintala Eggertsson Architects (sauna area), Studioilse, 2H Interior Design, Tongtong, Designholmen Fogo Island Inn is a five star inn designed by Saunders Architecture for the Shorefast Foundation on Fogo Island, Newfoundland, Canada. The Fogo Island Inn was conceived by the Shorefast Foundation, a Canadian charitable organization established by Zita, Anthony and Alan Cobb, as a building for learnings that have emerged from four centuries of lived experience on the northeast coast of Newfoundland – to help carry the past into the future. It was created to be a cultural and economic engine for Fogo Island, one of Canada’s oldest settlements; created in response to a pressing need to find new relevance for traditional knowledge and traditional ways. The goal was to “find new ways with old things”. Engaging this cultural and intellectual heritage was a key priority in the design of the building and was a key asset in its construction. The Inn is owned by a charitable foundation and is operated for the benefit of the communities of Fogo Island and Change Islands. The main building is an X in plan with the two-storey west to east volume containing public spaces while the four-storey south-west to northeast volume, parallel to the coast. All 29 guest rooms face the ocean and look onto the fishing grounds that attracted people to this island. Public areas include an art gallery curated by Fogo Island Arts; a dining room, bar and lounge which was recently rated as one of the top ten new restaurants in Canada by Enroute magazine; and a heritage library, and a cinema. The fourth floor roof deck has saunas and outdoor hot tubs with views of the sea. Traditional style “shore” legs are used to support the floors while minimizing the overall building footprint and the impact on the adjacent rocks, lichens and berries.

Chateau De La Cazine Submitted by: Matthews Mee Ltd

William NYC Submitted by: Lilian B Interiors

Location: Limogues, France Interior Designer: Matthews Mee Ltd Architect: Charles Mador Architects Hotel Group: Barrasford & Bird Worldwide Completion: January 2014

Location: New York, USA Interior Designer: In Situ Design, William Engel and Lilian B Interiors Completion Date: February 2014

The first phase of this project has been to take an already architecturally stunning but run down and neglected 19th Century chateau and convert it into a luxury 5* 17 bedroom Hotel including penthouse suite, reception, fine dining restaurant, bar, lounge, public spaces and gym. The client did not want a period recreation of a 19th Century Chateau interior but a dynamic, contemporary interpretation of a traditional French interior which would attract the modern traveller looking for a unique experience while retaining the historic character. Due to the unique and original architectural character of the various rooms low level, free standing and shortened dividing screens were used to separate the living spaces without creating small spaces and avoiding awkward junction details between new and old, allowing vision as well as the abundance of natural light from the original French windows. En-suite bathrooms were a must and the designers devised a ‘petite maison’ shower and W.C which respected the rooms dimensions and scale. Colours and forms echo the rolling natural grounds in the heart of rural France without being incongruous. Luxurious Jacquard fabric materials were selected to pay homage to the local town of Aubusson famous for its tapestry industry. The region is also famous for its international reputation in porcelain, enamel and stained-glass. Existing examples of these where protected and restored, alongside new details from the glass doors, contemporary chandeliers and ironmongery, right down to the table ware and cutlery selections.

14 The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015

The design is the collaborative work of In Situ Design (interior architecture and design), William Engel (paintings) and Lilian B Interiors (interior design), blurring the lines between their three fields; architecture, interiors and art in order to create a liveable 3-dimensional painting. Each floor at the William is a different colour. Monochromatic palettes of blue, teal, pink, orange or yellow vibrantly coat the ceilings, walls, carpets and bed linens and guests are immersed in visceral colour. Seamless white resin floors the colours frame the colours Diplomatic neutrality is found on furnishing and in bathrooms with a play of grey tweed. In larger suites, floating walls separate living from sleeping while smoked mirrors provide a reflective backdrop for sleek kitchens. Terraced suites, offer guests an outdoor urban oasis to view the classic New York City skyline. The William’s discreet foyer from its 1920’s hey days lends the air of a private club. Historic classical elements are greyed and guests are given a hint of the colour experience through tonal shifts of green and teals that surface in the reception portal and elevator lobby.

The Sanchaya Submitted by: P49 Deesign Location: Bintan, Indonesia Completion: 2014 Architect: Made Qijaya (Concept only) Interior Designer: P49 Deesign Comprising only 21 private villas and 9 suites the Sanchaya is a collection of ‘experiences’ through South East Asia which has been conceptualized as a “private estate” showcasing art & collectables amassed through many journeys by the owner. It is a collection of cultures and histories of the ASEAN region that reflects personal discoveries and passions. Guests are treated as friends at a family home rather than a typical hotel. The overall aesthetic of the estate is based on residential spaces that evoke the charms and graces of a time gone by. It pays homage to the European salons prevalent throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, when homes were opened up to provide visitors with an engaging environment in which to share with others la vie vivant through food, arts and culture. At luxurious villas, guests live surrounded by the cultural riches of Indonesia, the historical artifacts of Vietnam or the vivid hues of Thai silks. In total, seven different countries are represented in the collection, each displayed in luxurious, one-of-a-kind havens. Hidden behind this understated elegance is faultless functionality and contemporary planning strategies that are based on exceeding guest expectation and anticipating their every requirement. The Sanchaya, after all is the epitome of true luxury.

Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali Submitted by: BLINK Design

Royal Palm Submitted by: JFA Architects

Location: Bali, Indonesia Date completed: 2013 Architect: Airmas Asri, BLINK Design Group Interior designer: BLINK Design Group Hotel group: Fairmont

Location: Marrakech, Morocco Date completed: December 2013 Architect: Jean-Francois ADAM Architects Interior designer: Marilin SPATARO Hotel group: New Mauritius Hotels

The Brief was to create a flagship property that would herald the launch of an ultra luxury resort on Sanur beach project, design that would spatially redefine the resort guest room while visually capturing the Balinese spirit from a new perspective. To reflect the modern traveller’s lifestyle and redefine the boutique experience each guest room has three distinct sanctuaries - a lavish inwardfocused bathroom, an understated sleeping sanctuary, and a 25sqm outdoor living room enclosed by laser-cut screens inspired by a classic Balinese batik motif – while a temple-like grandeur and calm also pervades the resort as a whole.

The Royal Palm Marrakech is a 135 Suites and Villas 5 Star Hotel & Spa, within a 230 hectares Golf Estate, the “Domaine Royal Palm”, located 10 kms south of Marrakech, Morocco.

It might best be described as ‘ah’ factor design – the opposite of ‘wow’ factor. Harmonious reprieves and spaces inviting contemplation. The walls are clad in high-grade honed, finished local marble and complimented by the handmade glazed ceramic base and floor. Custom stone composite vessel sinks, laser-cut light fixtures and handcrafted shell feature walls complete this shimmering sanctuary. The crown jewels are the set of Balinese shell necklaces that flank each side of the entry. Local materials were used throughout the resort, including natural shells, bronze and copper finishes, and native woods like mahogany and bingkari. A restrained palette allows the vivid colors of Bali’s landscape to seem even more bewitching.

18 The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015

Like Marrakech itself, the design of the Domaine Royal Palm reflects the desert, the mountains, and typical North African climate, with a strong cultural and historical background. Influenced by the rustic southern Moroccan architecture found in the Berber culture, the prime design objective was to provide shading in summer, sun penetration in winter and areas of cascading waters to keep the air feeling fresh. The flatness of the site was balanced with the introduction of vertical elements, by integrating majestic and spacious volumes, accentuated by the desert sunlight filtered through “moucharabiehs”. Passing through mysterious outer walls and through an inner courtyard with gardens and ponds, the entrance is reached through enormous archways, with stunning views on the ponds, golf course and mountains. From the entrance lobby stands a perpendicular axis on which are pinned various amazing internal and external experiences leading to the three restaurants, the bar, the swimming pool and the conference facilities. The axis then becomes a “street”, the boutiques, inspired by the vibrant atmosphere of the souks and the traditional medina.

Prince de Galles Submitted by: Pierre-Yves Rochon Location: Paris, France Interior Designer: Pierre-Yves Rochon (PYR) Architect: ERTIM Architects Completion: March 2013 The legendary Prince de Galles, part of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Luxury Collection, remains the Parisian residence for discerning travelers who seek a sophisticated and intimate environment. Prince de Galles is reminiscent of Art Deco during the 1930’s, drawing inspiration from designers such as Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, and Eugene Printz. Its public areas have the appeal of an intimate salon; the 159 opulent guestrooms and suites were imagined as private rooms in a luxurious Parisian residence. The entrance and lobby present classic Art Deco interior architectural features, and custom furniture and furnishings, by local Parisian artisans. The entrance, flanked by two bronze sculpted boxwood plants, leads to a Saint Laurent marble clad sitting area with a one-of-a-kind gold leaf chandelier hung in the center. The lobby elevators feature ironwork over mirrored walls – a reinterpretation of the hotel’s original birdcage elevators from the 1930s. Alabaster lanterns light the grand staircase from the lobby to the fitness center. The guestrooms incorporate colour palettes of celadon, blue and ivory, accented with reds and purples; headboards were surrounded by floor to ceiling mirrors to create a visually expansive space. Bespoke furniture made from mahogany and ebony woods, and artwork, emphasize a traditional Parisian aesthetic. Each guestroom has a dressing area with large closet, and sitting area that presents panoramic views of Paris.

Alila Jabal Akhdar Submitted by: P49 Deesign Location: Jabal Akhdar, Oman Interior Designer: P49 Deesign Completion: 2014 Perched 2,000 metres above sea level, Alila Jabal Akhdar overlooks a dramatic gorge, surrounded by awe-inspiring views of the Al Hajar Mountains. Jabal Akhdar meaning “Green Mountain” in Arabic, is part of the Al Hajar mountain range, which is one of Oman’s most spectacular regions. Alila Jabal Akhdar overlooks a dramatic gorge surrounded by awe inspiring views of the Al Hajar mountains. The design aesthetic was fully inspired by the site; the local culture; unique terrain and also the Alila brand aesthetic. The result is a building and interior that is in total harmony with its context. However the planning principles are very contemporary and give the spaces a simplicity of form, however the way that strong strong natural textured materials have been used, gives the interior a warm and rustic aesthetic that you would find in a traditional local Omani mountain village home that are located in the adjacent mountains. Although rocky at first glance Jabal Akhdar is known as “ Green Mountain “ and has an abundance of local flora such as Pomegranate & Juniper trees and amazingly also mountain roses. The design used these elements as inspiration through various aspects of the project including colour schemes. The mountain rose was used more significantly as a design for a ‘signature’ screen that is used as a backdrop throughout the public areas. Roses were prominent in the design as the making of rose water was a traditional speciality in this region and thought it was important to make a feature of this. The palette of materials and colours was conceived following traditional village principles of material and colour as well. The resort maintains a “singular design direction” that continues throughout the hotel from public spaces through guestrooms, stone, plaster, wood, rugs and hand painted murals. 20 The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015

Sunrise Kempinski Hotel, Beijing Submitted by: Shanghai Huadu Architecture + Planning

W Chicago Lakeshore Submitted by: W Chicago Lakeshore

Location: Beijing, China Interior Designer: Kuang Xiaoming & Zhang Hai’ao of Shanghai Huadu Architecture + Planning co. ltd Completion: 2014

Location: Chicago, IL Date completed: June 2014 Architect: Herb Zelikoff Interior designer: Meyer Davis Studio, Inc. Hotel group: Starwood

A nature inspired hotel fitting into Chinese culture and the context, the Sunrise Kempinski Hotel Beijing sits on Yanqi Lake with the top of the building reflecting the colour of the sky, the middle of the building reflects the Yanshan Mountain, and the bottom of the building reflects the lake. The exterior glass surface, which is covered by over 10,000 pieces of glass panels, spans 18,075 square metres (194,558 sq ft). The front view is that of the ‘Rising Sun’ (round shape), symbolic of the fast-developing economy of China. The entrance of the hotel is shaped like the mouth of a fish, symbolising prosperity. From a side-angle view, the hotel building is shaped like a scallop, which represents ‘Fortune’ in Chinese culture. Other Chinese cultural elements are also used in the design details; for example, the side of the building embraces the concept of traditional Chinese panes. In the past, Chinese people would stand in awe of the sun, which they believed to reflect the core values of Chinese philosophy – that mankind is an integral part of nature and in order to be harmonious, nature should be respected. In China, a circle means the start and the continuity of the life. The close relationship of mountains and the lake is one of the biggest advantages in the design process. Starting from the idea of learning from the nature, using undulated soft form, the whole building can be dissolved into the landscape. “We need the architecture that can represent the soul of Chinese culture, namely the idea of learning from nature. We not only have to consider the ‘connection’ between the main building and the environment, it is a hotel complex that also involves a private island, so, a vivid visual needs to be created for the guests – resulting in, when a guest looks at Yanqi Lake Kempinski from Yanqi Island, it will really give our guests the beautiful picture of sunrise and sunset,” said the leading Architect. 24 The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015

Meyer Davis has designed a distinctly modern urban escape filled with dramatic glamour for the newly renovated W Chicago Lakshore. Meyer Davis’ design concept for the W Chicago Lakeshore was formed on the basis of three intrinsically architectural themes – Chicago’s history and tradition of architecture, the hotel’s iconic Lake Shore Drive locations, and shadows and reflections of innovation. The design showcases the confluence of a vibrant world-class city meeting the serene edge of Lake Michigan and pays homage to the architectural ingenuity of Chicago. It mirrors the city’s energy, invention and industrialism. Sleeker, sexier public areas include a new signature farm-to-table restaurant, a living room concept space, and an expansion of the hotel’s prime meeting and event space, which boasts 360 degree views of the city. W Lakeshore is characterized by modern lighting, energetic colors, contemporary furniture and sleek finishes that mimic and reflect the vibrant city skyline and reveal layers of the city’s architectural ingenuity. Vivid, modern and textured lighting energizes public areas and is used to create specific architectural moments. This is seen with the alternating digital images above the “conversation pods” – intimate, semi-private lounge settings separated by beaded drapery adjacent to the bar. A luxurious elements is Meyer Davis’s modern Heatherwick-inspired “oyster” that frames the rear of the restaurant. 520 guestrooms and suites uphold the theme of shadows and reflections with metallic and lacquered finishes reflecting incredible views. The guestrooms showcase a palette of blues and greys, black and white, and a splash of chartreuse.

Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa Submitted by: Mirk Architectural & Engineering

The Lianfeng Beidaihe Sheraton City Hotel is located in the city of Beidaihe, Qinhuangdao Province, a seaside Resort City for Northern China and summer Capitol for China’s Central Government.

Location: Dubai Designer: Mirk Group

The new Sheraton Hotel, Conference Centre and Resort Apartments. The design is modern European with a significant garden connected to the Conference Rooms, Dining areas and Lobby. The hotel recognises the Garden as an important element in both Eastern and Western traditions and complements this with an elegant Architecture of balance, proportion and scale, as well as a classic approach that falls well within the Sheraton World of Hospitality. The interior planning respects this contemporary approach creating Great Rooms that connect to the surrounding gardens. Their design evokes the idea of being in a resort environment with the use of warm, natural materials and furniture, and spaces that evoke the connections to sky, landscape and water, all of which are designed in an elegant contemporary style and evoke the warmth of a comfortable atmosphere of leisure and relaxation. The Restaurant is modern with a lot of Chinese influences. China is looking to create and define their own style of interior design and this combines the best of Chinese elements in a contemporary expression. The design works well because it works on two levels for hotel patrons and conference center attendees but in addition as a resort location for summer vacation villa and apartment guests.

Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa is a Polynesian themed luxury resort comprising 361 rooms and suites, 182 serviced apartments with 14 restaurants & lounges, So Fit health club & Tennis Court. The Sofitel Palm Dubai has been modeled on a French Polynesian village, fresh with green foliage, cabana-style fittings, and sparkling water features overflowed with the polynesian design and motifs on every detail. Intricate details of Koru, Geco, Tiki, Butterfly and Tiare flowers could be spotted on doors, walls and floors; all of which symbolize peace, freedom, energy and connection, life and new beginnings. The art of organic architecture called eco-art, or greener architecture consisting of a variety of plants trailing gently up the organic wall paper. Vertical gardens bring life, nature and color to the environment. The vertical garden takes just few months to flourish, but the final results can last for up to three decades. Modern interpretation and translation of culture has been achieved through lighting and the reed ceiling finishes. Breathe natural island chic in refined interiors flowing with turquoise, fuchsia and green fabrics, a living wall, and colorful flowers. Serene, low-rise buildings and villas evoke Polynesian traditions and the sea, which laps a long, sandy private beach. A space can be a simple transition, a passage to a paradise just beyond. The Lobby carries you through to the resort outside. The Lobby ceiling is designed as a Cabana with natural wood to reinforce the experience. While enjoying this pathway to paradise, simple and pure water features and vertical walls of floral plantings surround you on the two sides of the Lobby, immersing you in a lush green and vibrant environment found in traditional Polynesian Villages.

The Cranleigh Church Suites Submitted by: The Cranleigh

Location: Lake District, Cumbria Interior Designer: Jo Cross Completion: January 2015

Created by world renowned fashion designer and one of Hong Kong’s icons, the Designer Suite by Vivenne Tam offers stunning panoramic views of Victoria Harbour and a suite experience unlike any other.

The Boutique Church Suites are a new, unique and completely cutting edge accommodation experience in the Lake District. The Boutique Church Suites are located in Bowness-on-Windermere and housed in a 350 year old building. The design brief was to offer 4 custom made adults-only spaces (The Opulence Suite, The Fantasy Suite, The Utopia Suite and The Indulgence Suite), combining luxury and cutting edge design & technology. Each suite has been individually created. Stylish and original, each offers bespoke, handmade furniture, thick luxurious carpets, crystallized Swarovski padded headboards, infinity mirrored walls, electric black out blinds and a complimentary mini bar, including champagne.

Hotel ICON is a stylish testament to Hong Kong’s creative energy and vibrant art scene, showcases work from the city’s celebrated designers and visionaries. Hotel ICON is the teaching and research hotel for The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), from which Vivienne graduated. The hotel’s mission resonated with Vivienne and she wanted also to be part of this band of designers and artists celebrated and profiled by the hotel. Personally curated by Vivienne Tam to exude her signature brand of “China chic,” the spacious bedroom with an adjoining living room provides privacy for work or entertaining in the grand style. Against the sweeping views of an equally iconic feature of Hong Kong – Victoria Harbour – Vivienne set out to create a one-off suite inspired by her New York flat and exuding a blend of chinoiserie and modernity, a signature of her style. The 80 square meter pad located on the 27th floor of the hotel references modern design, Chinese accents and the principles of feng shui to render the room an effortless elegance and chic simplicity. It is both a peek into Vivienne Tam’s private world and an expression of her ideal proverbial home-away-from-home. It features many Vivienne’s favourites. Wood figures prominently in the living room because it’s very textural and conveys a sense of warmth and luxury. The brief was to create a new world class kitchen and restaurant with an authentic atmosphere true to the spirit of Claridge’s art deco interiors, but layered and re-imagined for today’s diners who want to experience Chef Simon Rogan’s sustainably sourced menu. It was important for the restaurant to feel grand yet understated, welcoming, calm and immediately make guests feel at home with sympathetic levels of lighting for both lunch time and evening menus. Integral to the design brief is the incorporation of the kitchen into the guest experience which should be considered as a front of house space. All diners are invited to see their food being prepared. All furniture, lighting, metalwork, glass, fittings and carpet are bespoke and unique to the interior. The design includes all elements of the restaurant’s identity including all tableware, signage and uniforms with each element informing and supporting the others. The Maybourne Group is known for collecting and commissioning original art and the interior includes art works commissioned especially for the interior. One of the key aspects of the project was changing the entrance in order to create an element of theatre and surprise. Guests now enter Fera through a small arched doorway into a tiny curtained lobby (a former fuse cupboard), this is almost like being back stage. From here they step into a beautiful rotunda with striped fluted walls and a period inspired white gold leaf ceiling where they are welcomed by the Maitre D’ with the restaurant in full view behind.

Inakaya Submitted by: Stickman Tribe Location: Abu Dhabi Interior Designer: Asmaa Said Architect: Marcos Cain Hotel Group: Ritz-Carlton Completion: October 2014 Having an authentic Japanese robata grill in the heart of Abu Dhabi is a strong enough concept to draw people in, now all the design has to do is create an inviting, interesting yet simple atmosphere to match the mouth-watering food served. To do so, the overall palette was composed of only 3 main finishes: Black stained oak, pine wood cladding and slate inspired porcelain flooring. As you walk in, you are greeted by an up-lit Samurai warrior framed by beautiful black stained timber screens. As your eyes are lifted, you notice the hanging folded paper feature in the ceiling inspired by the Omikuji tree; the tradition originates from hanging random fortunes written on strips of paper at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan. The main feature of Inakaya is of course its famous long dining counter, where fresh ingredients are cooked on an open flame in close proximity of the guests’ own eyes. The counter is set at dining height so the guests can enjoy the dynamic and casual vibe of the live kitchen and be part of the overall experience. When the dish is ready, the chef hands it over using a large timber paddle, which is another Inakaya signature. Drawing you in is the flirtatious lighting feature peering through the screens of the private dining room. This room offers an experience like no other, with 2000 original sake bottles hanging using rope from the ceiling and a bold tiger etched in timber as your backdrop. The design brings aspects of the region into the restaurant, always perfectly complementing the cuisine on offer. The colours, lighting and design aspects are all synced to add to the impact the cuisine and culture have on the guest. The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015 35

Seminyak Italian at Double Six Hotel Submitted by: HC2 Interior Architecture

The Polaris at Hyatt Regency Submitted by: The Johnson Studio

Location: Bali, Indonesia Interior Designer: David Haughton / Lesley Campbell HC2 Completion: May 2014

Location: Atlanta, USA Date completed: June 2014 Architect: The Johnson Studio – Brian W. Finkel Interior designer: The Johnson Studio – Anna McGrady White Hotel group: Hyatt Regency Hotel

An 80 seat contemporary trattoria overlooking the ocean. The designers worked with artists both international and local to create a warm contemporary space. Seminyak Italian was conceived as a modern trattoria, a relaxed neighbourhood vibe that would attract both local residents, in house guests and tourists. The key design challenge was the C shaped space on the mezzanine level. As designers we had to ensure that we maximized the ocean views whilst creating intimate dining spaces in the areas that overlooked the mezzanine level. The solution was to create bales that cantilever over the front of the building giving uninterrupted views of the ocean whilst providing additional dining space. The idea of the bales is carried over to the inside with four bales hovering over the mezzanine level. We wanted to create a sense of theatre within the space making the Campari bar central to the main viewing area. We wanted to create a sense of theatre with the antipasti and wine cabinets flanking the bar and a pasta making room allows customers to view the chefs at work. Colours of the Italian flag were referenced in soft furnishings in a playful and non contrived way. Custom made Parmesan lights hang over the tables to create We worked with Australian and Bali based artists to create unique art pieces. Steve Ormandy’s large murals can be seen from the lobby of the hotel and custom circular stairways transition between the hotel lobby and the intimate and welcoming restaurant space above. The amazing artworks and the beautiful Campari bar at the core of the restaurant perfect for admiring a Balinese sunset. It’s a great blend of amazing food, service and design. A warm and inviting space that is a feast for the senses.

Renovated ultra-lounge, the 1967 iconic Polaris mixes bold design with retro touches...complete transformation ushers it into the 21 century. Patrons may select from a variety of custom seating options for that perfect perch to sample seasonal small plates and hand crafted cocktails. All zones are on the rotating platform and one may even opt for a seat at the bar to watch the 360 backdrop of the Atlanta skyline and beyond slowly scroll by. The 45 minute turn provides ample time for conversation intermixed with glances among original John Portman architectural books to mad men era objects on display. Four distinct lounge areas are laid out to mimic zones in a residence. The dining zone features a custom walnut communal table with a 60’s inspired standing lamp that comes up through the table and softly lights the top. The library and the living room zones provide soft lounge seating with contrasting masculine and feminine color palettes and textures. Custom fabricated sectional sofas and screens hug Polaris’ curves and create a semi private experience for guests. The beautiful and mechanically impressive bar allows patrons to peer out the unobstructed windows to the view beyond. Sparkling glass towers on each end house glassware and liquor while a highly polished petrified wood bar top adds glamour and intrigue. The 360 degree skyline views are not the only eye catching feature. A fully open kitchen bustling with chefs adds life to the lounge and an over scaled brass sculptural feature-wall enhances the experience with art.

The Wayfarer Submitted by: Meyer Davis The Wayfarer design is a celebration of “old meets new.” Combining elements of grandeur and modern design, the main dining room upholds an aesthetic of warm modern opulence and pays homage to social clubs of time periods past. The main dining room is a glass-wrapped, light-filled room composed of a series of interconnected lounge areas full of rich leathers, dark woods and custom designed mid-century inspired chairs and modern lighting. Standout design features of The Wayfarer include a sumptuous custom made 1970’s inspired serpentine banquette, a vintage theater marquee ceiling and stylized graffiti. The mezzanine features a 20 foot pewter and glazed brick bar and intimate social area as well as three private dining rooms. Hanging from the stairwell is a larger than life graphic fabric curtain with a collage of contemporary art floating in front. This tongue in cheek salon-style collection is mimicked in the main dining room and upstairs lounge, where the artwork goes from bold and colorful, to clubby black and white shots. Upstairs, expert detailing can be found in custom tufted dining chairs with velvet patterned backs.

Interior designer: Ingenium Design Group Inc. Hotel group: Hotel Arts Group An all-day restaurant based on juxtaposition of design elements and unexpected details, offering interactive wine-tasting & unique dining experiences. The Yellow Door Bistro is a playful portrayal of purposeful randomness through a miscellaneous blend of simple details. The furniture intermixes romantic styles of European restoration pieces with punctuating and contemporary influences. The restaurant welcomes with a monolithic, historical-inspired yellow door oddly situated in commercial glass walls of the entry. Oversized domed armchairs and living room style seating create pockets of intimacy for individual dining groups. Repetition within the design detailing echoes a fluent and dynamic quality. Ikia Hotel Submitted by: Tarh Va Afarinesh Architectural & Engineering Consultants Co. Location: Tehran-Iran Architect: Ms. Shiva Aghababaei Interior Designer: Ms. Shiva Aghababaei Completion: February 2015 This cluster hotel with 500 rooms is located adjacent to Tehran’s International Airport (IKIA) As the first airport hotel in the country, IKIA hotel is developed opposite to the main passenger terminal of Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKIA). The project is a part of the newly developed airport cities. The hotel is designed as a cluster hotel inclusive of a hotel. The two hotels have common service areas, but separated guest and public areas; yet the public areas are connected through a corridor linking the two lobbies. The restaurant has a unique interior design matching its function, though the building as a whole has a coherent look. The hotels have been designed under international standards and a great deal of attention and consideration has been given to the design details and commitment to the design concept. Many of the elements such as lamps, furniture, rugs and woodworks… have been custom made for this project and most of decorative finishes have also been produced specifically for this project, on site. Disharmony between gray, white, black, copper, and brown backgrounds and walls and large surfaces have been courageously coloured in brilliant pink, purple, yellow, and green colours.

The Kensington Quarter Café at Hotel Indigo Submitted by: Dexter Moren Associates Location: Kensington, London Interior Designer: Dexter Moren Associates Completion: October 2014 A multi-functional local deli space, complete with private dining snug area, to give residents a place to meet and shop for locally sourced artisan produce while allowing guests of the hotel to feel connected to the neighbourhood. We were engaged by InterContinental Hotel Group to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment to the public areas of Hotel Indigo Kensington and create a space that would become a local landmark. The brief was about developing a neighbourhood story to re-invigorate the site; creating a ‘local living room’ (hotel reception) and a local deli (food and beverage offer). We worked closely with IHG to develop a new food & beverage concept which sets a precedent for the brand, namely by introducing an artisan deli / retail element which provides an offering for local residents and hotel guests not currently offered within the local area. The spaces have been designed to be multi-functional and adaptive, for example the “snug” are can be partitioned off via fluted glass screens and booked for private events. A balance has been created between a space which is part of the hotel but also feels independent and authentic. We achieved this by designing separate street entrances with differentiated branding for the hotel and café. The space is also highly flexible in order to work successfully for breakfast and lunch and then adapt to become an intimate restaurant and wine bar in the evening. Exex Suites Submitted by: THE WHOLEDESIGN

Location: Cusago, Milan Architect: Antonella Tesei Interior Designer: Antonella Tesei Completion: 2012

Location: Gifu, Japan Interior Designer: THE WHOLEDESIGN Architect: YASOICHI Completion: July 2014

The Hotel Mulino Grande is the result of the transformation of a Sixteenth Century water Mill within the Agricultural South Park of Milan. The project involves both contemporary design and attention to detail, preserving the charm of history and the vitality of nature.

The Exex Suites is a building with bridal facilities, including bars, lounges and restaurants.

The lighting design project creates visual comfort and highlights the beauty of the structures, the colures, inspired by the Renaissance paintings, and the contemporary furnishing elements. The bar and lounge occupy inside areas of the ground floor of the water mill building as well as the front porch and the garden. The pavement is made with old paving stones and cotto tiles. The textile armchairs have been designed by Antonella Tesei in the shape of the iron blades.

42 The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015

The main concept for the project is “Timeless & Borderless”. THE WHOLEDESIGN did not just want to make the place a modern designed space, they wanted to incorporate the history of the surroundings into the design, making sure it is a one of a kind experience for the customers and guests who visit. The designers tried to include a sense of Japanese within the European/ American design. The design works so well because of the attention to detail. For THE WHOLEDESIGN, this was particularly important in order to make the project “shine”.

Alta Ego Submitted by: Design Intervention Location: Singapore Interior Designer: Design Intervention Completion: 2014 The project is a three storey bar/night club, with a courtyard garden, situated along the premier leisure strip in downtown Singapore. The Client’s vision for the project was to have each level conjure a different mood, each reecting the type of Music that would be played there. The street level lounge plays easy listening music and we have created an intimate, yet striking space that stands out from the competition but at the same time has a warming inviting vibe. In the basement bar the DJ will play hip hop music and our brief was to create an uncomplicated backdrop that would complement the simple beat. On the upper level, we have created a luxurious area for private members and VIP guests that oozes a richness but at the same time has an edgier, cooler undercurrent that complements the house music that is played here and distinguishes the club from it’s competitors. The golden angular bar with the Rhino heads has become a real talking point in town.

Turquoise Tiger at Exit 33 Submitted by: Ramsguard

Location: Singapore Interior Designer: Michael Fiebrich Design Completion: January 2015

Location: Verona, New York, USA Date completed: 2013 Architect: Ramsgard Interior designer: Ramsgard

A modern Club Lounge for the most iconic building in Singapore, with an interior as modern and striking as the architectural wonder it sits atop. Several architectural features were designed to speak to the iconic modern architecture of Marina Bay Sands and these became key elements of the project. Interior feature walls clad in a combination of polished, satin and matte bronze rods act as both semi private screens and wonderful textural backdrops and mimic the verticality and sparkle of the Singapore cityscape. Custom pendants reminiscent of metallic clouds, highlight the ceilings and finally, patterns taken from the structure of the modern MBS building are interpreted into carpets as well as inlay patterns to the stone flooring. The panoramic views of Singapore are a large part of the experience of the space and the architectural elements and features as well as the colours and materials we’ve chosen, speak beautifully to the surrounding skyline, blending the exterior views seamlessly with the interior. “We successfully created this type of sophisticated “skyscape” by layering various architectural elements and carefully taking colour cues from the views to extend the vistas within the space, making for a very exciting experience, day or night.”

The décor throughout Turquoise Tiger emphasizes geometric forms of curves, chevrons and diamond motifs. Vivid high contrasting colors of turquoise and gold emphasize the luxury and glamour of a gilded age. In Turquoise Tiger, inlays of Louis Blue granite, in black, lacquered mahogany accent the backlit turquoise diamonds of the venues’ curved bar. Live performances of rat pack style crooner’s reference an era of notoriety and prohibition, mixed with vaudeville style burlesque performances and a speakeasy atmosphere. The design combines classic movie posters in a cinema chic atmosphere, where dueling pianos draw the eye to a stage back drop of shimmering gold silk Australian swag curtains. The undulating curved camel-back banquette seating tufted with warm, gold tones are accented with a signature diamond, laced pattern of the bar highlighted by sparkling black tufting buttons, tiered crystal chandeliers hanging above each banquette, strikingly accenting the 8 foot tall custom made wall sconces that are from floor to ceiling. The glamorous women’s room is accented by golden onyx wall tile; lacquered black moulding and a deep turquoise ceiling that enhance the experience. There are four vanities trimmed with a silk and velvet wall covering inset behind black, lacquered cabinetry topped with Louis Blue granite counter tops that create the sophisticated style.

Subsix Submitted by: Per Aquum Niyama Location: Verona, New York, USA Date completed: 2013 Architect: Ramsgard Interior designer: Ramsgard Underwater playground. Aqua adventures set against the colourful landscape of the Indian Ocean. 500 metres out in the ocean and six metres below the waterline. Following rave reviews of its world first underwater nightclub, Subsix, Per Aquum has evolved the pioneering venue into an underwater playground, a creative space which can be transformed into whatever guests imagine it to be – from private champagne breakfasts to lunchtime celebrations to midnight proposals. Upon arrival, the underwater revellers descend a dramatic three-tier staircase. Overhead, Italian-designed abstract chandeliers illuminate the descent like shining coral or white stars sparkling through the sea’s surface. Brancusi cabinetry and mirrors line the path. In the depths of Subsix, the soft anemone fingers of bespoke chairs invite with their deliciously bizarre textured design. Above, thousands of strands of capiz shells drape from the entire expanse of the ceiling in a luxe ode to an undersea kelp forest. Piercing the shells’ undulating waves, a garden of coral-like chandeliers spike their gleaming branches over wedding brunches and late-night celebrations. Silver-panelled columns throughout the venue draw their inspiration from the ribbed gills of manta rays.

Shilla Seoul Submitted by: Remedios Studio

Location: Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore Date completed: February 2014 Architect: Michael Graves/DP Architects Interior designer: YWS Design Asia Pte. Ltd.

Location: Seoul, Korea Interior Designer: Remedios Studio Completion: August 2013

Guests find sanctuary in this elegant oasis designed with crystal lattice walls, cascading water-drop pendant lights and embossed floral-design ceilings. Surrounded by luxury and elegant details, guests find sanctuary the moment they walk through the front doors of this boutique hotel. Located within Asia’s ultimate resort destination, Resorts World Sentosa, Hotel Michael is one of six hotel offerings at the complex. This boutique hotel has been a delight for art enthusiasts since its initial opening in 2010 with its art gallery-like guest rooms that pay tribute to American contemporary architect, Michael Graves. For its refurbishment, YWS stayed true to the boutique’s roots and created a lobby/lounge with details to delight art connoisseur’s and luxury leisure seekers. Beauty floods the 903 square meter hotel lobby with an abundance of waterpendant shaped lights, embossed floral-designs on the ceiling and a large crystal lattice wall that stretches the length of the lobby floor. Understanding that tranquility isn’t solely accomplished by aesthetics, YWS didn’t stop there. With the intent to design a luxury environment for social interactions and relaxation, YWS also focused on improving the space’s functionality and flow in order to enhance the guest experience. The result is a hospitality sanctuary which met project goals, budget and schedule.

The hotel is synonymous with quality and great service and Remedios Studio wanted to maintain this reputation while appealing to a younger demographic, and without losing its existing, loyal clientèle. The redesigned hotel was to be sophisticated, but not trendy or edgy. Remedios’ solution was to reinterpret traditional Korean values and create a refined, urbane hotel that was modern, but timeless. He likens The Shilla Seoul today to Hermes: contemporary, yet classic with traditional values. In a vast, open space, the challenge is to create comfortable pockets of intimacy. With The Library, adjacent to the Lobby Lounge, Remedios had the dual task of recapturing the circulation space, as well as transitioning from a three-storey space to a single-storey one. His solution was to position a series of bookcases in a circular fashion, drawing guests towards the centre, where a welcoming fireplace awaits. Flanking The Library is the Lounge Bar, Communal Bar and VIP Bar—three offshoots offering different types of entertainment space. In the Lounge Bar, where guests listen to live jazz, Remedios has opened up the main wall so guests can best enjoy views of Namsan Mountain, while the Communal Bar is a more sociable space, featuring a see-and-be-seen high table where guests can mingle. The VIP Bar comprises five private lounges inspired by ‘bottle clubs’—Asian drinking establishments that hold spirits in a client’s name. What sets Shilla Seoul apart is meticulous attention to detail. For instance, they tested over 50 different light switches to find the one with the most satisfying feel, and months were spent developing the guestroom minibars. Bearing the essential elements in designing traditional Korean accommodation in mind, Remedios Studio shied away from trendy materials and opted for classics such as stone, wood and high-quality fabrics in an overall, neutral palette of black, white and taupe, with an emphasis on the play of pattern and texture.

Hyatt Regency Montreal Submitted by: Virserius Studio Location: Montreal, Canada Date completed: January 2013 Architect: Le MayMichaud Interior designer: Virserius Studio Hotel group: Pandox Located in the Place Des Arts in Montreal, the Hyatt Regency had always sponsored a tremendous amount of cultural activities. However, prior to the renovation, the design of the hotel was completely disconnected from its involvement in the local arts. The goal was to create an artistic journey for the guest where they could experience literature, fine arts, music and film in a subtle, sophisticated and surprising way. When the guests arrive at the hotel, the first thing they see is a map of the world laser-cut out of corten steel. The steel will age over the passage of time, a reminder that everything is always in a constant state of change. As you enter the lobby on the lower level, you see that the map has been transformed into a wood planking structure. As a further extension of the theme, a topographical pattern is woven into the hand-tufted carpet. An example of the ordinary becoming extraordinary, this depicts a cartographer’s work as an artistic expression. The elevators bring the guests up to the main check-in level where they step out on a New York Blue stone floor and walk toward the check-in area. This features a cantilevered wood canopy that has been laser cut with a beautiful abstracted flower pattern that is backlit. The concierge desk was conceived as a freestanding sculpture that would break from the typical concierge desk. The guests’ passage through the hotel becomes a journey through art and storytelling which compels them to continue to explore and enjoy yet another stay.

Sheraton Skyline, Heathrow Submitted by: Nous Design

The Balmoral Palm Court Submitted by: Rocco Forte Hotels

Location: Heathrow Airport Interior Designer: Nous Design Hotel Group: Sheraton – Starwood Completion: February 2014

Location: Edinburgh, Scotland Interior Designer: Olga Polizzi Architect: Olga Polizzi Completion: February 2014

The Sheraton Skyline used to be a destination hotel in the 1970s, hosting some of the most prestigious entertainers that London had to offer.

The Palm Court is an Edinburgh institution, located in the historic Balmoral Hotel. The project aim was to transform the central hotel space from a bar area into a light and airy lobby lounge for afternoon tea with twice as many covers.

Nous Design took the opportunity to bring back this glorious period by highlighting the fantastic opulent furniture and fittings which accentuate the triple height in the entrance hall area leading onto a unique and stylish, central tropical swimming pool. A key aspect of the project is the electric mix of furniture and materials which Nous Design used to compliment the existing strong 1970s Architecture. The main focus of the exquisite lounge was to create a sophisticated and tranquil environment for the Hotel’s guest to be able to escape from the busy Heathrow Airport environment.

Original historic and listed features had to be treated with the utmost care whilst the restoration and reworking of the room took place. The original Victorian Venetian chandeliers, pillars, cornicing and glass dome dictated a classically elegant framework for the design that badly needed modernising. The large bar was removed to allow additional seating and the oak block floor restored. Olga Polizzi worked with local suppliers and brought in subtle local references such as the thistle patterned material named ‘Edinburgh’ by Bernard Thorpe. Contemporary tonal greys are contrasted by splashes of dynamic bright blue whilst the traditional colonial palm trees inject green which is then taken up through further soft furnishings throughout the room. The walls have specially commissioned hand-painted De Gournay wallpaper with well known follies of Edinburgh incorporated into the landscape. The wallpaper was erected on large wall panels set around the octagon shaped room. Guests are entertained as they spot the Scottish national heritage Calton Hill Follies amongst which are Nelson’s Monument and the City Observatory. Equally important was the grouping and spacing of furniture, which had to allow guests to pass through the Palm Court to other areas of the hotel, whilst minimising disturbance and ensuring privacy for those enjoying tea. Olga Polizzi created an inner and outer circle of seating areas for the guest’s comfort. In addition to the practical, the room is a truly ‘transportive’ space which gives a real sense of occasion as soon as guests set foot into it.

The Paramount Hotel Submitted by: Meyer Davis Studio Location: New York, NY Date completed: February, 2014 Architect: Stonehill & Taylor Interior designer: Meyer Davis Studio, Inc. Hotel group: RFR Holding LLC When asked to redesign the interiors of one of Manhattan’s most iconic boutique hotels, Meyer Davis designers sought to reimagine the space through the lens of a contemporary theater aesthetic. Constructed in 1928 as part of an extensive building and expansion drive in the Times Square theater district, the Paramount Hotel was intended to appeal to visitors coming to New York for its vibrant night life. At the core of the Paramount’s transformation is the redesign of the hotel lobby. The design of the lobby builds on the drama and glamour of Lamb’s original vision and further enhances it with modern touches and saturated, muted tones to imbue the room with a cozy, sexy ambiance that will delight visitors and New Yorkers alike. Upon entering the two story atrium lobby, the space’s blue and grey color palette and variety of eclectic seating choices radiate an essence of an ultra-sexy lounge. Simultaneously, its dramatic lighting and highly-saturated velvet accent chairs tastefully nod to the stylized elements of traditional Art Deco theatres. The focal point of the lobby is the fireplace, masterfully rendered to reflect the light and energy of the room. Playing upon the theatre motif, the upstairs mezzanine makes a spectacle of the design by providing ample seating along the perimeter to enjoy an elevated view of the social scene below. Adjacent to the main lobby is the relaxed, intimate environment of the Bar & Grill, which continues the Paramount’s romance with Broadway through its use of dramatic lighting, theater-inspired fabric, raised banquette seating, and Candid Hofer-style vintage photography. Landvetter Airport Hotel Submitted by: Stylt Trampoli

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Date completed: September 2014

Location: Göteborg, Sweden Interior Designer: Stylt Trampoli team Completion Date: August 2014

Architect: BLTA (Bower Lewis Thrower Architects) Interior designer: Sims Patrick Studio Hotel group : Hospitality Properties Trust This custom-designed, boutique hotel combines functionality, modern details, traditional materials and references. It becomes an interactive art showcase and full of exciting details that are enhanced by lighting: dramatic, bold, memorable, interactive and sleek. The urban modern boutique hotel lobby is in itself a sculptural piece of art... a “jewel box” with a striking street level appeal as well as a dramatic stage set on the inside. It features a revolving art collection and is very interactive for the guest, representing the new and upcoming Philadelphia vibe. To bring the “outside in” was a major driver in the development of the first level floor plan. The condensed public space component provided the opportunity to craft the space with a saturation of design style. The objective was to use patterns and materials found in business fashion to inspire the floors, walls, and focal points. The spaces are open and inviting to the passersby. There is a high level of detail and contrasting textures in accent walls and features. The lighting is designed to create zones that evoke emotions of surprise and whimsy as well as create a buzz, accenting art to create different moods as guests move through the lobby to the gallery to the coffee house and into their rooms.

A bright and cosy Nordic home-away-from-home, where classic designer furniture meet carefully-chosen objects, often picked from the owner’s own collections. For almost 30 years, Landvetter Airport Hotel has been a second home for flight attendants, tourists and other travellers looking for a soft landing close to the international airport. The hotel, which is owned and run by the Engström family, prides itself on great service and a personal touch, and this, in combination with the handy location, has resulted in the hotel becoming a favourite for international conferences. The hotel wanted to entice guests out of their lonely rooms and encourage them to spend more time in the public areas – the entrance, lobby, bar and restaurant. Stylt was called in to make these areas as attractive as possible, creating a warm and welcoming feeling that would earn the hotel a place in guest’s memories and keep them coming back again and again. The hotel’s owners, the Engström family, were the starting point for the concept. Their passion for art, nature, the local Gothenburg area and the sea is reflected throughout the interior. The result is an inspiring eclectic mix where classic designer furniture meet carefully-chosen objects and collections, often picked from among the family’s own belongings.

Vimmerby Stadshotell Submitted by: Stylt Trampoli Location: Vimmerby, Sweden Architect: Stylt Trampoli Interior Designer: Stylt Trampoli Hotel Group: Best Western Completion: May 2014 One of Sweden’s oldest small-town hotels is once more the centre of attention and the natural hub of events for visitors and locals alike. The design brief was to restore the grandeur of one of the most important buildings in the life of the small town of Vimmerby, with a modern twist. The hotel needed to regain its position as the heart of the town and its most important meeting place both for business, celebrations, and everyday social engagements. The design is grand, but also warm and welcoming – the perfect balance of respectability and comfort. A key aspect of the project is the squirrel, a symbol of thrift and industry taken from the town coat of arms, whose portrait now graces the hotel drawing room.

Conrad Koh Samui Submitted by: Wilson Associates

Eskisehir Spa & Thermal Hotel Submitted by: GAD

Location: Koh Samui, Thailand Date completed: September 2011 Interior designer: Wilson Associates Architect: ecoid

Location: Odunpazari, Eskisehir, Turkey Architect: GAD & Gokhan Avcioglu Eskisehir Spa& Thermal Hotel is a boutique hotel in Odunpazari, Eskisehir. The project was highly influenced and inspired from Eskisehir’s thermal water resources.

Overlooking the mesmerizing Gulf of Thailand, the Conrad Koh Samui is a modern Thai resort laced with barefoot sophistication. The design brief was to create a ‘top of the world’ luxury resortexperience where guests feel pampered, protected and deeply connected to the natural world and Thai culture. The hotel has four contemporary openair dining venues; Jahn, The Cellar, Aura Lounge, Zest and Azure Bar|Grill. With spalike bathrooms including steam showers and deep freestanding tubs that overlook the ocean. The spa provides 270 degree panoramic views, where each spa treatment room has its own private deck with views of the ocean. The Wilson Associates design team spent four years on this project, ensuring every space was authentically connected to the local Thai culture. The first week on the job, our lead designers rented bicycles and road around the entire island of Koh Samui. They stopped in local cafés, browsed through market stalls, visited temples, hiked waterfalls and essentially immersed themselves in the everyday culture of Thailand. This firsthand immersion experience equipped them with the colors, textures, patterns, and cultural essence needed to create an authentic design narrative for the Conrad Koh Samui. Everything from the spa to the F&B venues and guestrooms capitalizes on the relationship between the human soul and Mother Earth. Our designers beautified the juxtaposition between the lush flora and luxe furniture, fabrics, fixtures and finishes. There’s nothing more compelling than staying in a thatched roof, openair villa laced with goldleaf finishes.

The project is a modern interpretation of Odunpazari’s vernacular architecture and existing historical texture. The site plan is formed after a careful consideration of the existing trees’ positions in order to minimise the damage to the site. The complex includes a spa and wellness centre in the middle, and accommodation units on the perimeter. There is also a hotel, a wedding venue, and guest bungalows located in a hillside pine forest. The resort is built around the spa, which comprises the core and centre of the building. It is no coincidence that Eskisehir Spa & Thermal Hotel is located here: The idea of the Eskisehir Spa & Thermal Hotel was conceived to use this natural resource for spa. The spa is coupled with earth, taking advantage of the site’s geothermal features. The hotel is tiered following the natural topography and revolves around the spa in order to provide easy access to all of the hotel guests. The wedding venue is designed as a separate function from the hotel. The project touches on the sustainable design aspects by making use of wind and solar energy. The geothermal energy is not used only in the spas, but also for the space heating during cold seasons, via a geothermal heat pump system.

NH Beach Hotel Submitted by: Nous Design

Ritz-Carlton Reserve SubmItted by: SB Architects

Location: North Israel Interior Designer: Nous Design Architect: Feigin Architects Completion: December 2013

Location: Dorado, Puerto Rico Date completed: December 12, 2012 Architect: SB Architects Interior designer: Wilson Associates Hotel group: The Ritz-Carlton

Nous Design’s sumptuous bedrooms were inspired by this fantastic Resort Hotel which is situated in one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. For the most beautiful beach in Israel, the team focused on uncomplicated luxury, using organic materials like limestone, wool, oak and natural rattan to create a harmonious guest experience, extending the sea, sand and beach into each room whilst incorporating fantastic private lap pools to each ground suite making them a unique feature. Nous Design were able to use local artistes and created beautiful private Japanese-like gardens, for each of the renovated rooms. The team were inspired by a variety of marine features which were infused into the design, including the use of drift wood for the side lamp structure, the glass artwork resembling marine life and the pebble shaped desks which created patterns that stimulate whilst relaxing you. Nous Design used simple materials which echo the natural surroundings, leaving the guests to enjoy the seaside’s’ natural experience in this luxury and transformative environment.

The centerpiece of the revitalized Dorado Beach Resort, the resort stands on the site of the original resort built more than 50 years ago by Laurence Rockefeller. In keeping with the Ritz-Carlton Reserve brand commitment to stewardship and Mr. Rockefeller’s legacy of conservation, the new Ritz-Carlton Reserve has been designed to LEED Certification standards. True to its sustainable mission, the new Ritz-Carlton Reserve has been built upon the foundations of the original hotel, minimizing the disturbance to the site and “grandfathering” in the hotel’s original location directly on beach. The unique architectural style developed for Dorado Beach takes its cue from two important influences: the site itself and the rich, multi-layered history of both Puerto Rico and Dorado Beach. The architecture is contemporary, and draws heavily from the mid-century modern vernacular in a direct reference to the period that gave rise to the original Dorado Beach Resort. Yet the environment is warm and inviting, infused with layers of references to the surrounding natural world and to the many cultures – both ancient and modern – that have influenced life on this island. The architecture is arresting, yet unfailingly subtle. This resort treads lightly on the land and, more often than not, floats above it. Structures float above the earth or appear to rise from the water. The open-air lobby frames a direct view of the sea. The hotel arrival complex is linked by walkways raised 2 meters above the earth, turning the journey through the hotel into a walk through the tree-tops.

El Mangroove Submitted by: Seifert Murphy Location: Peninsula Papagayo Bay, Guanacaste, Costa Rica Date completed: January 2014 Architect: Ronald Zurcher Interior designer: Seifert Murphy Hotel group: Enjoy Group Located in Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica the El Mangroove Hotel is situated by the mangroves of this site. With a beach forest setting as its back drop, Seifert Murphy led their design with inspiration for a small boutique resort property that resembles their young, urban, and hip guests. Taking on designs for both the guestrooms and the public areas meant one cohesive appeal for this hotel. The client wanted the Guestrooms to suggest a loft concept which turned Seifert Murphy to an urban surf mentality, keeping the rooms as open air as possible. Warm and clean but not rustic, they took on a comfort with layered furnishing and relaxed aesthetics. Soft fabrics compliment the natural wood pieces and sculptural shark tooth art. Across the lake are the public areas, which stand alone as their timeless architecture caters to a simple luxury. Designed with the charisma of the urban personality reflected from the Guestrooms, this space encompasses the Main Lobby and Concierge, the 3 Meal Restaurant and Bar Lounge, the unique guest centered Spa, the pool area equipped with cabanas and the Beach Restaurant that leads straight to the shore line. Each space conveys the urban surf qualities through simple constructed furniture, fun patterns, casual light fixtures and lively art. The open air spaces give way to breezy fabrics and sea inspired palettes. Beach rocking chairs and hammocks give an ease in mood, while the low lighting of fire torchieres light the open air pathways. This is a space where enjoyment is infinite. Date of completion: February 2015 With Interiors by Meriem Hall Designs and Archiecture by Yuji Yamazaki, Finolhu Vilas by Club Med expresses all the elements of a Luxury Resort in a relaxed and elegant vocabulary. First Villas et Chalets Luxury Resort New Build by Club Med, located in Maldives features 52 Villas with private pools. It is the story of this elegant traveller who voyages the world in which it has retained and adopted the essential.Every space has its own character but the general design is basically a reflection of various cultures embraced by the traveller and infused with abundant usage of weaving from different materials. The idea of weaving element was taken from the mats “Kunaa” that are locally made in Maldives. One of the best embellished areas of this development is the Restaurant where the general shape was inspired by Fare Polynesia map. The sunken central bar simulates a canoe wood where you feel like you are sitting at the boat where the bottom is constructed with resilient clear glass to exhibit the seabed and admire its beauty. Major walls are decorated and accented with Sumba’s paddles (Indonesia), Bamileke feather hats (Africa), and huge image of goldfish that reminds of Chinese culture. Rooms are exquisitely developed to be a place conducive to relax after a long journey. The bed is sitting on the platform which recalls the Japanese style of architecture with woven headboard and tall side mirrors that reflect suspended elegant lights. The patio situated behind of some of the villas gives a different enjoyment of experiencing the breeze in utmost privacy. The exciting colours and elegant furniture supplements the overall breath-taking experience. Colours in every area that is already entertaining to the guests. The space is symmetrical and straight forward with eclectic decors that shows elements from different places complementing the dark wood and colourful cushions. Weaving and exuberant colors in and out of the suite and the patio that offers the solitude whilst giving you the same outdoor feel. It works so well that it accomplished the luxury without compromising the fun and entertainment that Club Med is known for.It gives an undeniably enticing ambient and impeccable experience.

Totalling more than 100,000 square meters, Sofitel The Palm Dubai’s distinct French luxury offering is embraced by rich and iconic elements of Polynesian culture and civilisation. With an abundance of stunning organic architecture and lush vertical gardens, the resort reflects a timeless spirit and tropical allure. The lobby itself is set below a traditional, natural wood cabana, complete with tranquil water elements that complement guest relaxation areas. A special feature of the ground floor is a ‘living wall’ vertical garden planted by renowned botanist Patrick Blanc. The garden seemingly stretches for miles before the eyes as guests first venture into the hotel, and provides a wonderful ‘outdoors indoors’ experience. In addition, corridors and smaller spaces have been specially designed to evoke the fresh feeling of a green village, with plenty of American ash, bamboo, and earthy-toned surroundings. Taking a stroll through the hotel is in fact like walking through the woods, with dappled sunlight peeking through the treetops. The resort is a place of rediscovery and enchantment. As such, the design draws upon the style of the French Polynesian islands through a modern interpretation and translation of culture. The positive message each carries with it reinforces the overall purpose of the resort itself.

Beast Submitted by: DesignLSM

Bocca di Bacco Submitted by: Virserius Studio

Location: London, UK Interior Designer: DesignLSM Completion: January 2014

Location: New York, NY Date Completed: November 2013 Architect: George Ranalli Architect Interior Designer: Virserius Studio

Beast is an exciting new venture from DesignLSM’s long standing client, the Goodman Restaurant Group. Hidden away in a basement venue on Chapel Place in London, this unique communal fine dining concept offers diners shared dishes of the finest Norwegian king crab and 2 kilo cuts of steak. The client was originally inspired by the communal meals served in rustic huts to the Norwegian fishermen who catch the king crabs. With the Goodman Restaurant Group’s history of combining innovation and high quality with now well established concepts such as Burger and Lobster and Goodmans, their brief to the design team was to push the boundaries of accepted fine dining and create a decadent, rustic space that reflected the quality and simplicity of the food offer. Communal fine dining is easily the most unique aspect of the restaurant interior and represented the biggest challenge to DesignLSM’s restaurant interior design team. Their solution takes influence from medieval banqueting halls and the restaurant features six massive tables, each one a thick slab of oak measuring 6 metres in length. Long benches run the length of each table. Expertly made from green oak with scalloped seats, they create a raw and quite brutal effect, matching the simplicity and quality of the food offer. The design team also softened the interior with rows of softly lit rustic candle chandeliers and ornate candelabras dotted along the tables. Diners are surrounded by dramatically lit tanks housing the live king crabs, fridges with large cuts of steak, wine cellars and an open kitchen. The food is opulent and messy, so diners are invited to use the concrete hand basins piled high with napkins, scented soaps and lemon chunks.

Bocca Di Bacco is a casual yet refined dining establishment that offers a warm and rustic respite from the hectic New York streets outside. The space previously comprised two long narrows dark shops that were combined to create a great room with different moments that the patrons can enjoy. It is a place that suits different crowds from the family that comes in for weekend brunch to young professionals looking to unwind at dinner after a long day at work, to couples getting to know each other in a romantic setting. The space evokes a New England cottage meets New York City loft aesthetic with its white wood clapboards and red exposed brick. Rustic wood paneled table tops are paired with classic bent wood Thonet chairs. Wire-brushed wood planked flooring anchors the space and highlights the columns. Custom designed black leather chesterfield banquettes with gleaming brass buttons line the south wall, where the existing brick has been scrubbed and restored, with up lighting installed to highlight its natural texture. Soft linen custom designed pendants hang between banquettes and add softness to the overall lighting. White painted vertical wood slats with mirror slivers incorporated into the panels are installed on the center dividing wall and add the sparkle of reflected light in both the dining and bar spaces. The curved footprint of the bar adds whimsy while allowing more interaction between patrons sitting there. Small intricate details can be discovered throughout the space. Custom lathed spindle columns cap off the bar millwork and spindle legs support the bar height tables. The ceiling is paneled with woven wallcovering with a red flower patterned appliqué. Industrial inspired lanterns adorn the walls in the bar side adding a touch of rusticity. The walls are covered in a black shagreen-like textured wallcovering which creates a great backdrop for the white millwork to really pop.

Opus V Submitted by: Blocher Blocher Partners

Location: Harrogate, UK Interior Designer: GMP Design Completion: May 2014 The brief was to design a restaurant that provides a Mediterranean inspired food offering in an inviting and sophisticated environment, yet maintaining a Mediterranean feel.

Interior Designer: Blocher Blocher Partners, Stuttgart Architect: Blocher Blocher Partners, Stuttgart Completion: November 2013 Opus – the Latin word for a work resulting from creative activity, for a successful composition – is a fitting name for the Opus V restaurant in Mannheim, with its unusual architecture, stylish interior and unique cuisine.

The restaurant is split across two floors and includes private dining areas. By combining the traditional elements of the building with some aesthetically pleasing design elements, the space has become warm and inviting. Natural lighting has been maximised with the inclusion of a new glass frontage, which allows natural light to flood into the ground floor dining space. The restaurant offers both outdoor and indoor dining with a main feature to utilise the external balcony to give a unique outdoor dining experience. This outdoor dining space is a key aspect of the project, together with the new glazed frontage to compliment the traditional building.

It’s much more than just a restaurant - it is a setting for people interested in enjoyment, art and culture. The restaurant as stage and forum for cultural exchange is also represented by the two wall panels that are regularly redesigned by the Mannheim National Theatre. The Nordic-looking atmosphere above the city rooftops is otherwise open, simple and minimal: Natural materials, lots of wood and open space create an unusual and relaxed environment. The harmonious interior with its parquet floors, cherry wood furniture and brick walls immediately sets the tone for the enjoyment of culinary delights. Tables are arranged parallel to the panoramic windows and are complimented by ceiling panels of expanded metal in warm brown tones. The continuous parquet flooring and sliding glass elements open out to a six-meter wide passage, ensuring a smooth transition to the veranda. With room for another 50 guests, the inviting terrace – with its array of plants and herbs – is a green oasis in the middle of the city. On sunny days guests can take a seat and enjoy a wonderful view over the city squares of Mannheim and beyond. The visitors can follow the goings on in the kitchen through a glass pane in the main dining room, where white volcanic stone meets beige walls and black tiles. With its open design, Opus V is transparent, personal and interactive.

St. Cecilia Submitted by: Meyer Davis

Location: London, UK Inteiror Designer: DesignLSM Completion: March 2014

Location: Atlanta, GA Date completed: January, 2014 Architect: NO Architecture Interior designer: Meyer Davis Studio, Inc. Hotel group :Rocket Farm Group (restaurant)

Pavilion on High Street Kensington in London is a contemporary, elegant restaurant and delicatessen catering for it’s discerning club members and the public. DesignLSM’s interior design team were commissioned by the club to redesign the ground floor of their existing venue - a classic 1930’s building, with a stunning original art deco façade, taking an existing café and combining a neighbouring retail unit to create one unified space. Reflecting the quality of their discerning club members and the neighbourhood, the brief was to design an attractive and high end multiuse space that combines areas of retail with a bar and restaurant for use by both the business club members as well as the affluent Kensington resident. DesignLSM were asked to create a contemporary yet classic environment with all of the interior elements impressively super-sized. On entering the restaurant, guests are greeted by the florist, with tailor made bouquets by Paul Morris displayed along brass shelving. At the centre of the restaurant is the champagne bar, designed with Marquina marble, brass inlays and a delicately profiled pewter top. The bespoke bar also features a brass wine gantry and dramatic illuminated glass pillars. Framing the bar is the Carrara marble delicatessen counter on the left, home to an abundant display of produce, breads and pastries freshly baked in the on-site bakery. To the right of the bar is the open kitchen, offering diners the opportunity to watch their dishes being prepared by head chef Adam Simmonds and his team. Privately commissioned oil paintings by renowned British artist Simon Casson, hand crafted furniture made with opulent leathers and bespoke copper light features all designed by DesignLSM, bring together the overall design scheme.

Meyer Davis infused this restaurant with an affluent and upscale European tone while outfitting the space with hints of antiquity and quirk. The design inspiration for St. Cecilia was drawn from a classic, coastal Italian aesthetic. Meyer Davis infused an affluent and upscale European tone into the design, while outfitting the space with hints of antiquity and quirk. The result is a classic and modern restaurant with rustic twists that invites intimate moments within a grand collage of distinct and fresh design elements that lend themselves to the attitude of seaside comfort. A color palette of creams, natural hues and soft blue contrasted with deeper marine blues lends calm and comfort. Built without any straight walls, St. Cecilia is light and airy, flooded by two floors of natural light, and features an open kitchen, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows paired with beautiful patchwork curtain panels. Splashes of character can be found in details like industrial dome lighting, stuffed game birds, and a massive oak and brass bookcase at the bar filled with found objects. Earnest details have been paired alongside locally sourced recovered hardwood floors, tile-clad Romanesque columns with blackened steel casing, and custom designed seating in every area. Free floating banquettes break up the center of the room, and plush tufted banquettes hug the perimeter. A central bar anchors the space, with a curved wooden bar top and upholstered patchwork leather front.

The Company Submitted by: Stylt Trampoli

Yellow Door Bistro at Hotel Arts Submitted by: Ingenium Design Group

Location: Borås, Sweden Interior Designer: Stylt Trampoli team Completion Date: September 2013

Location: Calgary, AB, Canada Date completed: February 2013 Architect: Ingenium Design Group Inc. Interior designer: Ingenium Design Group Inc. Hotel group: Hotel Arts Group

A welcoming meeting place where students, teachers, mentors, designers, engineers, investors, interested locals and visitors from far and near can come to eat, drink, create, innovate and discover a vibrant area and its rich history together. Stylt Trampoli drew on the rich industrial heritage when creating the concept for The Company Café, Bar & Restaurant. The result is a central meeting place where students, teachers, mentors, designers, engineers, investors, interested locals and visitors from far and near can come to eat, drink, create, innovate and discover this vibrant area, and Borås itself with all its history. The Company is truly in the business of “Manufacturing Togetherness”, and out of that togetherness, one of Sweden’s most dynamic and innovative regions is being created out of the ashes of the old. The interior features, among other things, Stylt Trampoli’s handdrawn graphics, painted on tiles and printed on staff uniforms, takeout packaging etc. The design seeks to portray a place, its history and its future potential, and by doing so creating a portal to a town, a region, a history and an industry, both for local and visitors.

The Yellow Door Bistro is a playful portrayal of purposeful randomness through a miscellaneous blend of simple details. Gradients of time are also expressed through a combination of modern and period elements. The furniture intermixes romantic styles of European restoration pieces with punctuating and contemporary influences. The restaurant welcomes with a monolithic, historical-inspired yellow door oddly situated in commercial glass walls of the entry. A curved metal Z-bar partition allows a visual connection but denotes the central private dining area. A shared Harvest table leads into the jewel box-like wine room featuring interactive by-the-glass wine dispensing technology. Oversized domed armchairs and living room style seating create pockets of intimacy for individual dining groups. Repetition within the design detailing echoes a fluent and dynamic quality. Two feature walls display reclaimed historical wooden shutters in an interplay of texture and geometry. Hand-blown glass light fixtures strewn throughout create rhythmical and boutique accents. Classic forms and a backdrop of neutrals are offset by touches of gold and brightly coloured contrasts. As a hotel-based renovation, deconstruction of the original space was critical for integrating the new design with existing elements while articulating functionality. The design directive transforms the former restaurant into a completely new and original entity while addressing the client’s need for a chic, yet accessible setting which seamlessly transitions throughout the day (including breakfast, lunch & dinner services). The ‘Yellow Door’ concept alludes to a fundamentally unexpected and almost whimsical experience which becomes instantly evident upon entering the restaurant space.

Location: Bintan, Indonesia Interior Designer: P49 Deesign Completion: 2014

Location: Moganshan, Zhejiang Province, China Architect: Christophe Pere (Le Passage Owner) Interior Designer: Pauline Lee Pere Completion: 2014

The Sanchaya is a journey through South East Asia as seen through a reflection of the owners ‘private estate’ and the incredible art collected through her journeys & experiences. Comprising only 21 private villas and 9 suites the Sanchaya is a collection of ‘experiences’ through South East Asia which has been conceptualized as a “private estate” showcasing art & collectables amassed through many journeys by the owner.

Le Passage Mohkan Shan is a French luxury country house hotel in an idyllic tea plantation among the bamboo forests of Moganshan, China. The architecture and design of Le Passage Mohkan Shan was all about creating the European feel of a luxury country house hotel in the inside married with blending into the local features, countryside and architectural style of Moganshan mountain. Moganshan was once the getaway and playground of Shanghai’s high society in the 1930’s and today, Le Passage Mohkan Shan is reviving that rich history. The brief was to create a project that was in perfect harmony with the tea plantation it resides on, while creating an interior that oozes style, comfort and character from the local area. It’s 40 hotel rooms are spread among a central building and three outlying buildings, and the vision was to create the comforts and feel of quality inside blended with the local beauty outside. So all the rooms are spacious with high ceilings, oversized bathrooms, antique wood floors, and tall windows decorated with white wooden blinds. Elegant period adornments are found throughout, from handmade cement tile floors with intricate designs to white marble counters, brass fixtures, and large hand-woven rugs. The brief was also to deliver a property that was energy efficient and in touch with the environment while using a huge range of locally sourced reclaimed materials so it would blend into the mountain. The building needed to look like it belonged in Moganshan, and it does. The entire project includes a heated outdoor pool, two restaurants, lounge bar, banqueting room, activity centre and the 40 rooms all looking across the bamboo forest and tea plantation. The marriage of modern with old, of integrating materials and techniques from the surrounding area in the past and giving them a new lease of life in the hotel.

Keemala Submitted by: Keemala Location: Kamala, Phuket, Thailand Interior Designer: Mr Pisit Aongskultong Architect: Mr Sermsuk Kitcharoenwong, Architect Space Completion: January 2015 Keemala is an ethereal wonderland comprising 38 distinctively designed pool villas set in the rainforest in Phuket, Thailand. Inspired by the location’s natural surroundings and to innovate a unique hotel design for Thailand, the design reflects the tales of 4 fictitious tribes that united to form a village called Keemala. The villas, public areas, bridge, path and sculptures are inspired from nature e.g. forms of flowers, bird’s nests and symbolising the items of the local people’s way of life e.g. fishing tools, animal skins/textures (synthetic) and a humble chicken coup. Fixtures and furniture are being in the most part sourced from within communities in Thailand and hand made using local and traditional methods. Wherever possible the design is environmentally sustainable and the construction complements the surrounding ecosystem rather than demolish and create a man made surrounding. The majority of the building materials are natural products, and resources found on site have been recycled. Materials also use artificial products that have natural forms (or partly made of natural product). The ‘Clay Pool Cottages’ reflect the earth clan who were farmers. Clay, straw and ceramics feature. The wanderer tribe excelled in hunting and trading, and inspired the ‘Tent Pool Cottages’. The ‘Tree Pool Houses’ represent the sky clan who chose to live suspended from the trees. This accommodation category uses building techniques to give the impression that the tree houses are hanging from the trees; some furniture inside the cocoons is hung from the ceiling. The nest community inspired the design of the ‘Bird’s Nest Pool Villas’. This group enjoyed an opulent way of life. One of the project’s key aspects is the lobby. The inspiration of the lobby is from the poppy plant of the northern communities of Thailand and indeed the Golden Triangle. As this will be the guest’s first sight on arrival particular attention was paid to the atmosphere, with soft furnishings, lots of natural daylight and both rainforest and sea views to welcome and relax guests. Akyra Manor Chiang Mai Submitted by: AHMS The Collection Location: Chiang Mai, Thailand Interior Designer: Chaw Chih Wen of Manor Studio Date of completion: June 2015 A contemporary urban retreat, the all-suite akyra Manor gives Chiang Mai an invigorating shot of design and style, juxtaposed against the heritage of its location. The original brief to designer Chaw Chih Wen was to re-invent hospitality in Chiang Mai through akyra Manor. In an area best known for its mountainous surroundings, the hotel was to breathe new life into the downtown area of the city by providing a contemporary urban space for entertaining and relaxing: creating a new ‘hot-spot’ for the city. It was also important to establish a landmark building that would draw attention and create discussion. The challenge was to make a bold statement, whilst reimagining and embracing the strong rooted Chiang Mai culture and heritage. Any development would also need to continue the sustainability drive of AHMS The Collection and its deep founded respect for nature. According to design visionary Chih Wen, a key aspect of the design was the inspiration to build each of the 30 suites around its own courtyard: a ‘room within a room’ concept designed to bring the outdoors inside while not sacrificing privacy. This is central to the AHMS

This is a newly opened boutique hotel in Chengdu China. The project aimed at developing a new mode of business hotel that cross-over hospitality and art-related business to cater the expanding local market of art exhibition and auction. Inspired by the hotel name ‘Skytel’, an abstracted interior landscape of sky, mountain and earth was created to provide multiple functions of hotel and art gallery. Entrance lobby in white undulated wall-cum-ceiling spatial envelope with silk-screened texts provides transition from the busy world to an abstract and serene hospitality space. A temporary cloud-like art installation in the multi-functional exhibition zone greets customers through subtle interactive projection. Reception and waiting areas provide casual settings of living room and follow the minimal colour scheme of white. Custom designed metal wall relief at reception area denotes bird’s eye view of Chengdu’s future cityscape. Refreshment function of cock-tail events was supplemented by the brown-toned lobby lounge, where also tree-like timber screens and river-like copper curtain give privacy and acoustic quality to the space during usual days. The artistic flavour of the hospitality experience was completed by a full-height black and white photo-collage wall of the city life by a famous local visual artist.

Vasanti Seminyak Resort is a casual beachfront resort. Located in Bali, Indonesia, it is fun, vibrant and full of visual energy. The resort was designed with a modern edge that allows any urban guest to feel at home in a casual and laidback atmosphere. One of the favourite aspects of the resort are the textured finished walls using customised terracotta patterns which capture the drama of the uplights. The local stone floor is polished to reflect the soft evening sunset and you can relax in the nested pod seating, listening to the sound of the the water. A Harley D. bike graces itself at the entrance foyer with every corner inspired by little details, highlighting Bali’s craftsman artistry.

The Wutai Mountain resort is composed of 200 rooms, a spa, convention centre, three restaurants, swimming pools, a helipad, and 34 private mountain villas. When RTKL set out to design a resort tucked away in the famed Wutai Mountains of central China, the goal was to create a modern luxury destination that complemented the hundreds of Buddhist temples in the region. Planning began by dividing the site into three zones: “Ceremonial Life” for the resort, “Local Life” for the private villas, and “Natural Life” for the serene landscape that separates as well as ties the property together. The project integrates eastern and western architectural principles to provide guests with a modern interpretation of Chinese architecture. Formal alignment and view orientation were used to highlight the natural beauty of the region’s landscape while maintaining the secluded luxury of a mountain retreat. The multi-tiered roof reflects the local culture and architecture while also paying homage to the 5 sacred mountain peaks in the region. The hotel, while having modern aesthetic, still maintains a strong visual connection to its central China context and rustic mountain terrain.

Sunrise Kempinski Hotel, Beijing Submitted by: DiLeonardo

JW Marriott Zhengzhou Hotel Submitted by: Duncan Miller Ullmann

Location: Beijing, China Interior Designer: DiLeonardo

Location: Zhengzhou, China Interior Designer: Duncan Miller Ullmann Date of completion: July 2014

The design is inspired by Yanqi Lake and the surrounding mountain region. Influenced by the inspiring site and natural surroundings, the Sunrise Kempinski Hotel is Kempinski’s largest property in China. The hotel embodies the shape of the rising sun and symbolises harmony and unity. Paying homage to the landscape, the interior is largely inspired by the idea of framing the view. The design experiments with the juxtaposition of solids and voids and infusing reoccuring geometric forms into unexpected spaces, design elements or features. The spectacular site and architecture of the project provided a rich canvas to create an authentic and modern experience of our relationship with nature today. The design works well because each space is developed with a key feature that anchors the guest experience and allows for a sense of discovery and you move through the property.

Located in the heart of Zhengdong New District, the JW Marriott Zhengzhou Hotel is the newest luxury hotel in Zhengzhou. The 280-metre tall structure is the latest addition to the city’s skyline. Situated between levels 38 and 55 of the building, the 416 room hotel is the first Marriott hotel in Henan province, and the seventh JW Marriott hotel in Mainland China. DMU’s design subtly acknowledges Zhengzhou as an ancient capital and the birthplace of the Chinese culture over 5000 years ago. Subtle bronze metal accent finishes throughout the building pay tribute to the ancient Bronze Age in East Asia. As guests transition into the Lounge, they are greeted with modern lanterns decorated with elegant crystal shades. Historically influenced color tones are used in the furnishings that adorn the reception and lounge. As guests settle in the lounge, they are treated to breathtaking views over the city skyline and Ruyi Lake. Beijing Southern Airline Marriott Hotel Submitted by: VOA Architecture Design (Beijing) Location: Beijing, China Interior Designer: VOA - Rick Fawell, Patricia Rotondo, Nan Zhou, Serena Yu Wen Completion: October 2010 5 star Marriott Hotel Interiors, 45,000sm, including all guest rooms, three restaurants, public spaces including ballroom and conference center, spa, fitness and executive lounge. The design was inspired by Hainan Airlines tropical headquarters on China’s famous Hainan Island and introduced a welcoming oasis as a juxtaposition to Beijing’s hectic Central Business District. The guest is greeted with the sights, aroma and sounds of tropical rain forest waterfalls, palm trees, and luminous ever changing sky represented by a 5 story LED backlit vaulted glass ceiling. The glass ceiling arches high over a rainfall water feature and palm trees to immediately remove the patron from Beijing and connect them instead to the natural sounds and smells of Hainan Island. Connecting guests to nature is not the first thing patrons expect from a hotel in the heart of busy Beijing but this is where it is arguably the most important aspect of a foreign patron’s visit to China.

Location: Tianjin, China Interior Designer: Pierre-Yves Rochon Completion: October 2013

‘Shanghai Mingjie Renaissance Hotel’ has gained a spot in the Asia-Pacific Hotel over 200 Rooms category. A 5 star Renaissance Hotel of 35,000 sm with three restaurants, ballroom and conference centre, spa, fitness and executive lounge. The Hotel interiors are inspired by the winds that traditionally and literally have brought foreign travellers and trade to China. Upon entering the Hotel, the guests are swept past the curved stairs and water feature towards reception and then pulled into the lobby via the swirling curves of the ceiling and floor patterns. Reminiscent of treacherous water spouts and small peaceful water eddies where guests can find a spot to rest. The swirling winds terminate in a cyclone crystal chandelier that lands on the lobby bar. This design story is then consistently told throughout the hotel from Elevator lobbies to the Conference and Executive Centres and into the rooms and suites. There are three restaurants, a Japanese restaurant, a traditional Chinese restaurant, and a Three Meal Restaurant. In each of these spaces the design caters timelessly to the contemporary traveller as a Renaissance brand but with the contextual Chinese accents reminiscent of the winds of change that have now blown into modern China. The Lobby and bar that winds its way from Reception via floor and ceiling patterns and lighting and culminates in a magnificent Crystal Cyclone over the bar. The design works so clearly intuitively for guests from reception through lobby and to the various restaurants and links creatively to the ballroom/conference centre. In addition the Spa and Fitness level incorporate natural daylight indirectly to lighten and warm the spaces and functions.

The Ritz-Carlton, Tianjin inherits a unique heritage, in the heart of the former British Concession with regal Neoclassical-style interior. The newly opened The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Tianjin in the group for Asia-Pacific Area, it has been established the flag-ship image since opening. It is outstanding both in exterior and interior weather for the meaning of geographic history or the facilities. Styling of the 277 guestrooms including 53 suites likewise reflected the surrounding district’s European heritage, creating “an atmosphere of neoclassical mansion bedrooms, with cozy libraries, bathrooms with marble vanities and mahogany lacquer furniture.” Even the carpeting, with geometric patterns, is synonymous with that period, as are fresh color palettes in shades of white and cobalt blue in guestrooms, and yellow for the suites. Its surrounding architecture reflects this rich 19th century history. From the exterior, The Ritz-Carlton, Tianjin looks like a prominent historical landmark from that bygone era, when classicism and eclecticism merged in the construction style of the time, blending European and Chinese architectural aesthetics, representative of the nations that traded with China in past centuries. The design intent was to create “authentic, yet subtle classical interiors, immediately distinguishable from any other hotel”, while of course providing the highest quality and comfort for guests. Interior design and detailing therefore took part of its cue from the nostalgic architecture of the hotel’s exterior, adopting the basic principles of English Neoclassical style – balance, symmetry and proportion. An energetic color palette was especially developed, using fresh, bright white and yellow, cobalt blue and celadon; with black and white to create definition and contrast. Exterior design matches the history of the location. Interior design is unique, elegant and focusing on every detail. Most hotels in China are very modern or trendy, featuring generic neutral tones and stark interiors.

The Shilla Seoul - Library Submitted by: Remedios Studio Location: Seoul, Korea Interior Designer: Remedios Studio Completion: August 2013 Guests approach Shilla Seoul along a sweeping tree-lined drive, circling a fountain and past a cluster of traditional Korean pavilions, all designed to evoke a sense of grand homecoming. On arrival, guests enter the vast lobby with its triple-storey ceiling height, punctuated by fluted, hand-dressed granite columns. Rather than encase the forty-year old, structural columns, Remedios decided to turn them into a feature, lighting them to now resemble “contemporary chandeliers”. Over the last few decades, hotel guestroom sizes have increased, along with our expectations of indulgence and luxury. Remedios turned to perhaps the most iconic of luxurious small spaces for inspiration: the super-yacht. He designed the rooms to visually borrow from adjacent spaces, using glass sliding doors between bedrooms and bathrooms that retract completely, and similar toned stone and carpeting for the floors. To work around the challenge of the existing windows, which were relatively small, Remedios had the ingenious idea of framing the windows with a wide strip of reflective gunmetal. With a similar effect that eye-make-up has, the wider frames visually extend the eye, magically making the windows appear larger, while looking like a deliberate design feature. Location: Taipa, Macau Interior Designer: Edward Billson, Karl Grebstad/ MAP Architecture & Planning Architect: Monique Levy/ MAP Architecture & Planning Completion: June 2009

This property is a tropical retreat in Bali’s most sophisticated suburb. It is also the perfect place for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway. The existing architectural shell of each of the villas was left mainly untouched. New and larger openings were done to reveal new experience and integrate the lush outdoors, blurring it with the indoors was essential in making the guest fall in love with the environment. The once tired clusters had to be enhanced and have new life breathed into them. The creation of an open Love Jacuzzi was done and breathing block walls were used to allow cross ventilation. Texture and materials unique to Bali were used. Woven into the designs were modern details and furniture that adds to the luxury feel and lifestyle of the space. Each room has a story to tell: Desire, Mystique and Temptation.

The City of Dreams is a gaming and entertainment complex on the famous Cotai Strip Macau which incorporates three hotels (Crown, Hard Rock & Hyatt) and an interconnecting retail, entertaining and gaming complex. MAP was appointed to resolve all public design areas in order to maintain the construction program. For the Hard Rock Hotel suites, the client wanted an experience for its guests unlike any other they could find in Macau. MAP’s services included the provision of ‘rock star’ interiors for the suites. The interiors had to capture the Hard Rock brand ideals: fun and the party that doesn’t end. It also had to follow the ‘City of Dreams’ theme – flowing water, the Chinese symbol of good luck. While a very American brand, the hotel design had to appeal to a largely mainland Chinese clientele. Each of the Hard Rock Hotel Rock Star suites has a series of sinuously interconnecting spaces that enhance the separate functions of the bedroom, bathroom, living areas and lobby. MAP’s vision for the suites was to create a stage for the high roller guests to act out their rock star fantasies. Each suite comes with a multipurpose room with a selection of distractions such as: musical instruments, (drums, grand piano and guitars), golf and motor racing simulators, and the all-time favourite – a bucking bronco! There are no corners in the Hard Rock suites. Every space and piece of furniture in the suites is curvaceous, seamlessly integrating with the base building architecture and the City of Dreams theme. The furniture has been custom designed for comfort and conversation – such as the living room ‘brontosaurus’ sofas. Materials include leather (a must for every rock star), animal print inspired cushions, cow hide upholstery, shag pile carpets and modern black lace curtains.

Yue is a fine dining restaurant located in a newly opened boutique hotel in Chengdu China that serves Asian fusion food. The project brief required construction of a new built structure to form extension to the existing building to provide indoor and semi-indoor dining areas for holding different catering functions to the hotel users. Inspired by traditional landscape painting, an abstracted landscape was created to reflect the nature of the Asian fusion cuisine served. Under the new steel and glass canopy, a secondary envelope in timber was created to form enclosure to the semiindoor area and connect the original indoor part. The undulated ceiling-cum-wall panels with slot openings allow daylight penetration yet prevent high heat gain to the whole area. Open-plan seating pattern surrounding mobile buffet tables provide flexibility of layout during breakfast and special events. Full-height glass pivot doors further dissolve the boundary between indoor and outdoor area.Subtle atmospheric change of the two dining areas was created by transition of key materials from timber to brass. Ballyfin Hotel Submitted by: Purcell

Chateau De La Cazine Submitted by: Matthews Mee Ltd

Location: County Laois, Ireland Architect: Purcell Interior Designer: Ballyfin Demesne Ltd Completion: May 2011

Location: Limogues, France Interior Designer: Matthews Mee Ltd Architect: Charles Mador Architects Hotel Group: Barrasford & Bird Worldwide Completion: January 2014

Ireland’s finest Neo-classical house, Ballyfin, was transformed through conservation and repair into an exquisite and comfortable country house hotel. The design brief was to restore the house with great sensitivity and a strong understanding of the estate’s significance and refurbish it to serve as a five star hotel followings years of dilapidation and its former use as a school. As part of the restoration, the interiors at Ballyfin have been sympathetically restored and reinvigorated. The brief was to create the impression of an Irish country house from which the family had just departed, leaving behind all that previous generations had accumulated over the years, including souvenirs from the Grand Tour and design inspirations acquired when travelling abroad: Ballyfin should be comfortable, stylish, discreet and Irish, with layers of history to be unravelled and enjoyed. The house features fine dining, wine cellars, a lively bar and a large and comfortable library with books on Irish art, architecture and history, carefully repaired and adapted. Purcell remodelled a modern, four-storey dormitory extension to provide an additional wing, with bedrooms, ballroom, swimming pool and spa. Each of the 14 bedrooms is individually and sensitively decorated to respect the eclectic nature of the Irish country interior. The ground floor reception rooms were given the same care and textiles that were typical of the Empire or Regency period were researched and recreated. This can be seen in various details, including the wallpapers of several bedrooms and reception rooms which are old Mauny designs, recreated from documents. Purcell retained almost all of the original material with repairs and replacement of any material done in the manner and form of the original work.

Hotel Mulino Grande Submitted by: Studio Tesei

Le Clervaux Boutique & Design Hotel Submitted by: JOI-Design Interior Architects

Location: Cusago, Milan Architect: Antonella Tesei Interior Designer: Antonella Tesei Completion: 2012

Location: Le Clerf, Luxembourg Interior Designer: JOI-Design Interior Architects Completion: March 2013

The designers’ brief was to transform an existing hotel - a hybrid of a 19th century banker’s private villa and a 1970s glazed extension into a boutique property with 22 new spa suites. Taking inspiration from views of the nearby Château de Clervaux, JOI-Design set out to produce the sophisticated and luxurious ambience of a grand hotel brought up-to-date with stylised baroque features interpreted through a contemporary lens, spiced-up with delightfully unexpected details. The design concept proposed the creation of a boutique hotel comprised entirely of suites with inroom spas. The ‘modern baroque’ interior concept is introduced to guests from the moment they enter the building. A plush crimson carpet on a polished ebony floor leads guests towards the lobby through a silver and grey damask-patterned hallway with finely-cut metallic charcoal chandelier shimmering above. The private dining rooms have been given an intimate residential ambience consistent with the heritage component of the building in which they are located. The handsome carpet design was created from historical tiles in the hotel which, combined with dark parquet flooring and heavy drapes set against espresso toned walls, emphasise the building’s noble tradition. The 22 suites comprise three distinct styles – Château, Classique and Young Spirit. The design aesthetic for the Classique Suites, in the main house, is reminiscent of the shapes, colours and patterns most strongly associated with a stately grand hotel. The more opulent Château Suites are fitted-out in hues of deep red, graphite and black in a fresh interpretation of baroque style.

U&Me is a hotel that, like the city of Umeå, is full of creativity and innovation. Instead of just offering guests a bed for the night, U&Me wants to invite guests to explore the destination, and share in its creativity, knowledge and culture.

Set within six elegantly restored 17th century canal houses, the new Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam transports their guests to a world of discreet luxury and historical refinement.

U&Me is part of Umeå’s new cultural arena Väven. Thus the hotel has some unique services: the world’s largest hotel library (Umeå City Library), a theatre, an art-house cinema, a museum, a conference centre and a deli, to mention just a few. The rooms at U&Me are not ordinary hotel rooms. The rooms all have stunning views, and are filled with details that inspire creativity: instead of the usual hotel stationery, technical drawing paper and blank music paper come as standard in all rooms. Many have typewriters that are already loaded with paper. The interiors are fresh and modern, with plenty of natural material like wood, wool and stone, and a wide range of colours and textures. Because of the unique character of the building, which affords fantastic views, all beds are placed so that the sleeper faces the window, the river, the city and the land beyond. U&Me represents a new hotel culture, where the hotel is the gateway to a destination, a place, and a history. The experience extends beyond the walls of the hotel, and every guest is invited to spend their time exactly as they want, fulfilling their own unique dreams. The fresh, modern design allow the stunning views to take centre stage, while also matching the innovative and unconventional concept, as do the creative touches throughout.

The interiors of the buildings reflect Dutch restrained elegance. The design approach was to create a classic contemporary interior with strong reference to location and maritime history. Carefully sourced finishes, design details, textures and products relate directly to the story of Amsterdam during the Age of Discovery. Within the interior spaces of the Heritage buildings, a unique authentic experience has been created using products synonymous with the era such as fine linen and bespoke one-off designs - interiors which evoke the essence of the Dutch in a clean, defined manner. The entrance reveals a subtle décor with antique lantern illuminating the elaborate ceilings. A deep soft rug on a classic marble floor remains current with fresh tones and a modern take on the historic carpets of old Amsterdam. Residential touches add warmth and intrigue in the rich timber of a decorative console, a sourced heritage mirror and a feature clock. The interiors still retain much of the period detailing including exquisite plaster work designs, cornices, ceilings, architraves and also several authentic fireplaces which are now a focal point of the new guestrooms. To balance out the ornateness of these period features uncluttered, fresh, light rooms have been created in which the feeling of openness pervades whilst natural light is maximised through full height windows where drapery is restrained. Bathrooms are crisp yet calm with historically referenced pattern and accessories.

Location: Milan, Italy Date completed: 28/08/2014 Architect: Studio Garretti, arch. giovanni Ferrazzini Interior designer: Irene Pansadoro Interior Design Hotel group: Starwood Hotels & Resorts

Location: Tampere, Finland Date completed: December 2014 Interior Architect: Stylt Trampoli team Interior designer: Stylt Trampoli team Hotel group: Sokos Hotels

Guestroom and Suite renovation with new disabled guestrooms and bathrooms together with Soft Corridor Renovation.

When Sokos, one of Finland’s largest commercial property developers, decided to open a hotel of their new Solo brand in Tampere, they needed a different approach that could assure that the hotel had a genuine local connection. Stylt Trampoli created a concept where the hotel tells the story of the city’s rebirth and transformation, and by doing so, play a role in the city’s future.

The project brief was to renovate guestrooms and corridors. The Objective was to: modernize the hotel connecting the design of the new guestrooms to the existing Public Areas that had been partially renovated a few years before. Among these guestrooms we had to create new connecting rooms, New Suites, Disabled friendly rooms and eliminate the old single rooms through room merging. Therefore the hotel went from 228 rooms to 219 rooms. The corridors had to be object of a soft renovation trying to merge two different types of corridors.

In the 80s and 90s, as industry declined, a range of creative enterprises emerged to fill the vacuum, and Tampere today has a vibrant music and arts scene, as well as a strong literary heritage. The city’s journey from industrial to creative production is used to anchor the hotel to its location.

The budget for the renovation was very challenging and therefore the design was very much dictated by this but the result was a fresh and very Milanese room. In our opinion the use of color in the guestrooms and corridors was the key aspect that allowed us to link the new Guestrooms and old the Public Areas making the client feel as the hotel had been renovated all at the same time.

Hotel Torni Tampere rises out of the old locomotive sheds in the city centre - a proud symbol of rebirth. The sense of place is evident everywhere you look. Local creative forces have been invited to put their own mark on the hotel, for example in the restaurant, where guitars belonging to well-known bands adorn the walls, and the menus are made of old vinyl record sleeves.

The design of the new guestrooms has been inspired by 1950’ Milanese homes. This period is important for two reasons: 1st the hotel had been reconstructed in 1950 after being bombarded because it had become the Nazi’s headquarter in Milan and 2nd it signs the birth of Italian Haute Couture and the Made in Italy, surely an important aspect of Milan being one of the world’s fashion capitals together with Paris!

The rooftop bar, is designed to be as welcoming as a pub and as egalitarian as a city park, while also being as stunning as any metropolitan sky bar.

108 The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015

The entire 17th floor is given over to a creative lounge which is open to anyone, from near or far, in need of an inspiring place to work. There is also a library, dedicated to Tampere’s literary heritage, from which guests may borrow during their stay. The hotel is home to the largest commercial art gallery anywhere in the Nordic countries, with over 300 artworks by 22 local artists.

Hotel Scandic Aarhus City Submitted by: AART architects Location: Denmark Architect: AART architects Inteior Designer: Bønnelycke, Krook & Tjäder Hotel Group: Scandic Completion: 2012 Behind a beautifully ornamented facade from the 19th century you will find this 18,000-sqm hotel which includes restaurant and conference facilities and 228 rooms allocated on six floors. The hotel combines the city centre’s historic atmosphere with modern hotel facilities. For instance, the dark brown facade reflects the neighbouring buildings’ reddish brown hue. In addition, the bright bands give the facade rhythm and reflect the neighbouring buildings’ white ornaments. In order to bring a new, modern dimension to the city centre, the hotel has been designed as a sharp-edged corner building with vast glass facades, which are divided by varied facade sections. The facade sections are made of aluminium and create a clear contrast to the area’s historic brick architecture. The contrast between new and old is particularly being expressed along Østergade where the hotel has preserved the beautifully ornamented facade from the 19th century. The facade originally framed the city’s popular local hall and is one of the city’s best preserved 19th century facades. Last, but not least, the hotel attaches great importance to the environment. For instance, there are solar panels on the roof that supply the hotel with 90 per cent of the electricity used in the hotel rooms. In addition, the hotel has its own hives on the roof, so the guests can have fresh honey for breakfast. The hotel has also been designed as one of Denmark’s most accessible hotels, with 22 rooms for disabled people and a fully-accessible conference area. The hotel works so well, because it combines 150 years of city history into a modern architectural statement. The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015 109

Barcelò Milan Submitted by: Simone Micheli Architectural Hero Location: Milan, Italy Interior Designer and Lighting Project: Arch. Simone Micheli Hotel Group: Barcelò Hotels & Resorts Completion: December 2012 Barcelò Milan is the three-dimensional manifesto of the possible union between architecture and sensitivity; going over aesthetic canons, it tells the story of the everyday experience that becomes the active memory which drives men. Forget all obsolete definitions of ‘business hotel’, Barcelò Milan - a hybrid place, full of synesthetic contaminations - rewrites canons for hotels of the future. The Barcelò Milan interiors are conceived as pieces of architecture inside an architecture; spaces, lights and colours are interconnected in order to generate content and linguistic innovation. Common areas are re-designed, hybridising spaces, by the contamination of functions to meet all kinds of guests’ needs; phytomorphic sculptures constitute the structural apparatus of the ground floor and all the furniture avoids conventional geometry. Relaxing islands are created by the contrast among acid greens and bright reds with the Luserna stone floor. On the first floor the atmosphere is welcoming and serene: the wallpaper becomes a relaxing kaleidoscope and birch trees arise from the ground to the ceiling, making tones natural and harmonious. A super spa is located on the second floor: it is an organic, vibrant, interactive space where everything is strongly characterised: yellow fluid forms look like macro anemones which rise up from the ground or hang down from the ceiling, creating waterfalls. In ergonomic rooms lilac walls contrast with those in wood that, rising from the floor, characterise the bed head and wrap the whole bathroom. 110 The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015

Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel & Conference Center Submitted by: GA Design Location: Istanbul, Turkey Interior Designer: GA Design Architect: Han Tümertekin Completion: January 2014 A grand, Art Deco inspired 840-room hotel with stylish and luxurious restaurants and bars, 12,000m2 of conference facilities, and the glamourous Eforea Spa spread over three floors. The main sources of inspiration for the design concept were Ralph Lauren and his masculine style and palette of blues and greys, combined with a subtle art deco style to the detailing which also allowed there to be some connection between the interior and exterior architecture. The Lobby and Public spaces feature plaster sculptured surfaces, classic columns and dramatic high ceilings that add a sense of grandeur but generally have a neutral wall palate of painted surfaces, allowing the architecture to shine. Due to the scale of the public spaces it was important to maintain a sense of warmth and comfort and so furniture and accessories were chosen for their high-end residential feel. Continuing the influence of the Art Deco period, in the Globe Restaurant rich colours and bold geometric shapes have been used alongside luxurious finishes, mirror panelled walls and influences from other cultures such as the Chinese lantern style lights. Styled with a classic and masculine feel The Grand Bar features opulent velvets, accent piping details, and high-back, winged chairs with deep buttoning. The lighting is kept atmospheric with feature pendants and lamps along with a double-sided fire set within an imposing Nero Marquis column. The guestrooms are given a masculine and executive edge in design, again referencing Ralph Lauren in the cool greys, carpet patterns, and lighting selections. Location: Cusago, Milan Architect: Antonella Tesei Interior Designer: Antonella Tesei Completion: 2012

Highbullen Hotel, Golf and Country Club appointed Park Grove Design to transform a vacant roof space into luxury guest accommodation.

The Hotel Mulino Grande is the result of the transformation of a Sixteenth Century water Mill within the Agricultural South Park of Milan. The project involves both contemporary design and attention to detail, preserving the charm of history and the vitality of nature.

The brief was to develop an outstanding suite with an aesthetic which belies its unusual space. A key aspect of the interior design was to focus attention away from the sloping roof lines onto a glamorous central feature wall. The wall serves as a stylish headboard, topped by large filigree table lamps acting as a screen between the bed and the adjacent open plan bathing area. A velvet sofa features as a footboard, creating a lounge to the other side of the room. A matching window seat serves as a perch on which to enjoy the magnificent treetop views. Storage was developed within the eaves with antique mirrored cabinetry which appear free-standing through careful detailing such as tapered legs. One unit houses the hospitality area with specialist coffees and teas and the ubiquitous minibar. On the other side of the headboard wall a mirror-polished freestanding bath reflects a lit white marble feature wall and marble floor. This stone is repeated again in the suite’s shower/steam room and cloakroom. Guests are also treated to a glass-fronted infrared sauna with in-built music system. A second bedroom is arranged as a study complete with 3D television and Wii. This space can readily transform into a double bedroom, or accommodation for two singles.

The hotel hosts 21 rooms and suites, meeting rooms, Spa and Il Magiono Restaurant. It is made up of two main blocks, both organized on two levels, which communicate across a central garden open to the surrounding rural landscape. This hotel suite consists of 80 squared meter suites together with its own personal fitness area. Wooden flooring is made from the antique wooden beams (which were not possible to reuse as they were partially damaged coming from the restoration of the roofs and different level of the buildings). The floor of the fitness area is made using an ancient “Fresco” technique used in the Roman steam baths. All furniture used within the suite has been custom made and designed by Antonella Tesei including the side table which consists of an iron structure composed to resemble a sheaf of grain. The bed is covered with a velvet textile and the doors are covered in Cor-ten steel also designed by Antonella Tesei.

The Boutique Church Suites’ are a new, unique and completely cutting edge accommodation experience in the Lake District. Stephen Hargreaves’ luxury boutique 5 star hotel, The Cranleigh Boutique, was the first project for the brand. Located minutes from Lake Windermere and drawing comparisons with London’s finest boutique hotels, the Cranleigh reflects fresh, modern style, with Stephen using his unique vision to create a completely different accommodation experience in the North West. Each suite offers intelligent controlled lighting, music and video, enabling the user to completely control their own environment. Air spa tranquillity baths for 2 feature in each suite, with underwater lighting. In the ‘Fantasy Suite’ a glass bathroom is one of the most extraordinary features. Each suite has its own webpage and introduction video, allowing a glimpse at the sumptuous interiors, luxury fabrics and sophisticated lighting. The combination of uncompromised luxury and state of the art technology is exactly what Stephen Hargreaves wished to achieve. He has created the next generation of Hotel accommodation, which has to be seen to be believed. They are the ultimate escape for those seeking the very best in 5 star getaways.

“The design of the new guestrooms has been inspired by 1950’ Milanese homes. These facts led us to think that it was important to inspire the design to these years with its clean lines and beautiful materials like shagreen, gilded finishes, metal and antiqued mirrors using fashion sketches and black and white fashion photographs from the period for the art. In fact all of the art pieces are reproductions of original sketches and photographs of the work of the most famous Milanese fashion designer of the time, Jole Veneziani, whose unique collection of documents was given for the first time to be reproduced by her heirs. The rooms have a cream background and through the use of grey (typical Milanese color, ie. Armani) and accents of black (color that already existed in the Public Areas) and yellow (Giallo Milano: typical Milanese color that can be found in tram aprons and many Milanese buildings but also renown as Saffron Yellow the typical Milanese risotto color) we managed to create a “fil rouge” that links the new rooms to the existing Public Areas. The Interiors of the hotel are very classical and therefore we did non want to create totally modern rooms but we felt that the clean lines of the 50’ could be the perfect balance between modernity and history and therefore please both the classical and the modern taste client creating a product that will last in time.

Gotthards Krog Submitted by: Stylt Trampoli

Location: Nantwich, UK Interior Designer: Newman Gauge Architect: PWP Architects Hotel Group: Warner Hotels – Bourne Leisure Completion: Sping 2014

Location: Umeå, Sweden Date completed: March 2014 Interior Architect: Stylt Trampoli team Interior designer: Stylt Trampoli team

The design brief was to create a relaxed, informal and exquisite venue bringing deluxe dining and entertaining cabaret together for Warner’s discerning holiday guests in a grade 2 listed manor house hotel. Warner Hotels historically have two separate venues for Dining and Cabaret, which provides both benefits and negatives; Food service was easy to manage, as 500 guests are seated together, ate at the same time and left en-mass to enjoy the entertainment elsewhere; providing staff a clear room to clean. However, timings were set, guests had to adhere to strict timings and couldn’t dwell between courses to converse and missed out on a real restaurant atmosphere. Warner wanted to enhance their guests dining experience and create a more relaxed approach in their restaurant and change their dining areas from posh canteens to real restaurants. The restaurant needed to feel intimate whilst catering for 500+ guests and ensure everyone had a great view of the stage. Guests needed to be able to talk or watch the cabaret without having to shout to be heard or compromise the experience for the guests on neighbouring tables and enjoy their evening. The challenge to create a multi-purpose restaurant to act as a breakfast room, dining room and entertainment space without appearing to be ‘one room’ without appearing plain was quite a challenge. The restaurant is not only beautifully designed, but is also extremely easy and functional for staff to clear away without disturbing the ambience of the evening, with a refreshing, light and airy room for breakfast that transforms into a glamourous cabaret space at night.

Gotthards Krog is the restaurant of Stora Hotellet, our saltwaterscented grand hotel in northern Sweden. It is named after the first proprietor of the hotel, Gotthard Zetterberg, a man about whom many tales were told - some true, some less so. Today’s Gotthards is, like the rest of the hotel, a thrilling mix of the plush and the rough - the velvet sofa is crowned with a carved skull, octopuses lurk in the wallpaper, and the cosy booths are lit by ship’s lanterns. The motifs of the hotel rooms - tall ships, hourglasses, Neptune with his fork, seagulls and ropework - can also be found on the specially designed blue-and-white tableware. Decorated with knick-knacks from around the world – sea shells, bronze fish, ancient vases, and stuffed starfish that fill the windows, ledges and other random spots around the restaurant. The design is a continuation of the hotel concept, making the restaurant an integral part of the whole. At the same time, the restaurant has its own character and its own story to tell.

Location: Kensington, London Interior Designer: Dexter Moren Associates Completion: October 2014

The Hotel Mulino Grande is a Sixteenth Century water Mill within the Agricultural South Park of Milan. The restaurant occupies inside areas of the ground floor of the water mill building as well an outside patio together with its own vegetable garden. The Oak wooden pavement is Margaritelli, each slat has a particular shape which resembles a sheaf of grain. The built-in furniture has been designed by Antonella Tesei, covered with Cor-ten steel plate and the linen curtains have been specifically sown to remind the flow of water. The project involves both contemporary design and attention to detail, preserving the charm of history and the vitality of nature.

A multi-functional local deli space, complete with private dining snug area, to give residents a place to meet and shop for locally sourced artisan produce while allowing guests of the hotel to feel connected to the neighbourhood.

Location: Peninsula Papagayo Bay, Guanacaste, Costa Rica Date completed: January 2014 Architect: Ronald Zurcher Interior designer: Seifert Murphy Hotel group: Enjoy Group

Costa Rica is known for its peace-loving attitude, and Zürcher Arquitectos felt tapping into Mother Nature’s energy was the best way to connect the resort design with the overall vibe of the country. Andaz is an innovative experience for living space. Inspired by pre-Colombian roots, the have created a contemporary lifestyle resort without the cultural influence of the colonial period onward. Seamless integration between indoor and outdoor and the smoothness created by the rooflines. The design encompasses mimicry with the surroundings not only in aesthetics but also on a careful integration with the dramatic topography. The site is very narrow and elongated which offers every amenity and guest room to enjoy front line views. This gives each space its own privacy

Located in Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica the El Mangroove Hotel is situated by the mangroves of this site.

Ritz Carlton Reserve Submitted by: SB Architects Location: Dorado, Puerto Rico Date completed: December 12, 2012 Architect: SB Architects Interior designer: Wilson Associates Hotel group: The Ritz-Carlton Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve is comprised of a 114-key hotel, spa, beach and golf-oriented condominiums and townhomes, several grand villas, a beach club and golf club, and provides an ultra-luxury experience with an emphasis on sustainability and environmental stewardship. True to its sustainable mission, the new RitzCarlton Reserve has been built upon the foundations of the original hotel, minimizing the disturbance to the site and “grandfathering” in the hotel’s original location directly on beach. The unique architectural style developed for Dorado Beach takes its cue from two important influences: the site itself and the rich, multilayered history of both Puerto Rico and Dorado Beach. 124 The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015

Lone Star Court Submitted by: RTKL Associates Inc. Location: Austin, TX Interior Designer: Rottet Studio Architect: RTKL Associates Inc. Completion: December 2013 This is a small (124 keys), mid-rise hotel located at the southernmost end of a phased, Master-planned mixed use (residential/retail/office) development. The client’s idea for this first of many similar hotels was based loosely on the Motor Courts of the ‘40s and ‘50’s. In those days these hotels were organised around a motor court where patrons had the opportunity to park a car immediately outside the guest room they would inhabit. The motor court was convenient and also helped establish and sense of place. More importantly, in that regard, was the architecture of those properties that was often quite unique to the place where it was built. Located in Austin, Lone Star Court plays off the theme of Texas Hill Country Ranch architecture where the public buildings are treated as if they were part of an old ranch that’s fallen into disrepair and been abandoned on site (house, barn, out-buildings). In the case of the Bar/Lounge, the old ranch barn has been “restored”, but has a modern three-dimensional steel window element inserted for display, scale and interest. The guest room buildings (4 vary from 2 to 3 floors) are treated as contemporary elements. Three are curved and do the majority of the work defining a landscaped interior courtyard which also holds an open-air function pavilion and in-ground swimming pool.

Marriott Resort & Spa offers the simplicity of beachfront vacationing along with all of the comforts seasoned travelers have come to expect.

This custom-designed, boutique hotel combines functionality, modern details, traditional materials and references.

Adache Group Architects was commissioned to renovate and expand an existing hotel property located on Pompano Beach. The design was inspired by its oceanfront location and developed by breathing a new life and energy back into the property. The interior and exterior of this unique landmark beachfront property has been completely rejuvenated, bringing ocean views to each of the stylish hotel’s eight floors. Today, the magnificent oceanfront hotel graces the Pompano Beach skyline. The 219 room Marriott Pompano Beach Resort represents the conclusion of a stunning renovation that has modernized the property’s public spaces and guest rooms, business center, ballroom, fitness center, and meeting space. Due to the amount of beach frontage the design team was able to construct a new tower with a spa and lifestyle facility and an additional 119 guest suites. The two structures were conformed to create a seamless and cohesive beach front property. The central facilities building accommodates a state of the art conference facility and the roof top of the ballroom was designed as an event lawn and is an appealing visual from the guest suites above. From the upper deck, guests have an omnidirectional view from the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway. One of the many challenges was converting the existing structure to comply with the Marriott brand standards. The existing structure had numerous limitations in regards to the floor to floor ceiling heights, an antiquated mechanical and an electrical system which needed to be completely redesigned. 128 The International Hotel & Property Awards 2015

The Breakwater Hotel is a combination of two historic, art deco hotels located in the South Beach Historic District. The team’s inspiration was the Art Deco theme of the historic district, but their approach was interpretive, creating a modern interior with Art Deco references, either as iconic elements or as art. The program required that the two buildings be transformed into a boutique lifestyle hotel, attracting a younger clientele. The project’s Ocean Drive location is the heart of the most vibrant and active part of South Beach, with a direct view of the ocean, a perfect location for the target market. The ground floor of the hotel is a center of activity. The front porch and courtyard are filled with diners enjoying their libations. To add to the vibe, a new glass fronted swimming pool has been constructed on the roof of an existing one story structure at the rear of the courtyard, in the middle of the action, so that guests can enjoy a spectacular view of the beach and the ocean while swimming underwater. The hotel lobby is located in the Breakwater building, and is a study of contrasts. Ultra-modern furniture has been mixed with iconic Art Deco pieces, set against the restored background of the space. The new room sizes are very generous, and have been designed with the comfort of the guest in mind. All of the guest’s needs have been carefully considered and incorporated into the room design. The focus of the room is a unique headboard designed by Andi Pepper, inspired by Art Deco fabrics, and printed in ultramarine. This is set against a neutral background with accents of lime, creating a harmonious, beachoriented environment. Lighting is a key component of guest comfort. An original chandelier designed with Art Deco touches provides the ambient lighting.

The 443 room luxury resort hotel design recalls aesthetics of Mediterranean Revival architecture and is inspired by the style of Addison Mizner, the Architect largely responsible for the classic charm of historic Palm Beach and an aesthetic suited to the subtropical sun and climate of Florida. The hotel interior features a contemporary interpretation of historical imagery. Vaulted Venetian plaster ceilings and limestone walls and floor slabs greet the guests upon arrival and create the lobby and reception spaces. The grand stair is accented with a whimsical crystal display reminiscent of fireworks and a custom iron railing of interlocking rings, a motif that is recalled in the bronze plaster curved wall panels behind the front desk as well as the wallcovering in the guestroom corridors. A traditional octagonal pattern borrowed from some of the Mizner homes first appears on the upper portion of the lobby shadowing the pathway through the hotel. The octagonal pattern is repeated in macro scale on the ballroom ceiling and prominently on the white patterned stone highlighting the bathtub in the typical guestrooms. On a micro scale, the octagonal pattern appears on some of the light fixtures, most notably the guestroom pendant, as well as carpet patterns and elevator cabs. Contemporary furnishings and finishes provide a classic backdrop throughout the property. Mosaic patterns, a mainstay of Spanish Revival style, are evident throughout. The use of glass in lieu of more traditional stone provides a fresh direction to the design.
