A Special Message Welcome to the 2014 season of “The Social Register”! On behalf of The Guild I would like to thank the many hosts and hostesses who have so graciously given their time, their homes and business locations to present the new and exciting events outlined in our booklet. The expenses are undertaken by each respective host so that all receipts go to the benefit and support of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, promoting music education is an integral component of The Guild’s service to the community programs such as scholarships for student members of the Symphony Youth Orchestra and other related activities. These programs were designed to supplement music education in our public schools. Thank you, each of you, who support “The Social Register” events with such enthusiasm. It is your continued participation and support of our Guild that motivates us to strive towards perfection in our relationship with you, our community and our Symphony. We invite you to review our exciting list of parties and events and to make your reservations to any or all of them. We look forward to seeing and to greeting you once again for our memorable Parties of Note – 2014. Warm personal regards,
President Jacksonville Symphony Guild

History of The Guild Over sixty years ago the Concert Committee of the Jacksonville Symphony Association sold tickets to the first concert of the newly formed Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and on concert day went to the Armory, cleaned the barn-like structure, and set up chairs, returning that evening to hand out program guides. The Concert Committee became the Women’s Committee, later adding the first Pops Concert. The performing season blossomed and programs were moved to the George Washington Hotel. When Prudential’s South Central home office arrived in town, the concerts relocated to the Prudential Auditorium for larger audience capacity. As the Symphony’s activities expanded, the Women’s Committee was renamed the Women’s Guild, broadening its scope and increasing its membership. Pre-concert luncheons featuring discussions of artists were added to the Thursday performances. The Women’s Guild’s innovative first Symphony Ball was an instant success. Well known as The Guild by 1971, members sought new ways to enhance community participation and found success with Florida’s first Designers Showhouse, the beginning of a procession of exciting and profitable fundraisers. Not all the projects The Guild undertakes are huge. Major efforts are enhanced by less demanding but very rewarding projects such as fashion shows, including the only one we know that took place on a super carrier. Over a half century of activities such as tours to interesting regional attractions, trips abroad, the Nutcracker Ballet, pops concerts and pre-concert dinners have produced an important list of achievements supporting the Jacksonville Symphony. The Guild Education Committee provides a continuing significant community outreach, devoting itself to supplementing music education to grow our symphony’s audience. This glance at our past offers inspiration for the future. There is always more to be done, achieved, and accomplished. Our members are a vital, integral part of this important goal of support for the health and success of the Jacksonville Symphony. 7
