DESIGN FOR TODAY Winter & Spring 2018-19

Welcome Welcome to the new catalogue from Design For Today. It’s now three years since our launch and with new books to showcase, and more to follow, we’re having fun! This catalogue highlights the current books we have in print but also announces a number of new and exciting books that will be published this year. We are proud to print in Britain and most of our books are printed in East London using spot lithography, a craft based process where the artist has complete control. Our editions are small, bridging the gap between artist’s editions and mass market books. We are delighted to announce that our books are now available for shops and galleries through the distributor, Central Books.

Now the best of these have been collected here in this book that will inspire and entertain all ages, a book for parents, children, and fans of good illustration.

2018 was the year of Edward Bawden with several major exhibitions and books on show. Kate Farley’s folding book is a celebration of Bawden’s fascination and love of gardening. It’s motifs and decorations are drawn from Bawden’s work during his lifetime and lovingly printed using lino-cuts before being transferred to litho plate. Kate has been commissioned by London Transport for a series of garden posters and her work is represented in a number of collections including The Tate, British Library and The Yale Center for British Art (USA).

The Print Shop The Print Shop is a celebration of print and 40 Years of Calverts, the Printers Co-op based in the heart of East London’s Bethnal Green. It illustrates the story of a book as it progresses from scribble, to dummy, to selecting fonts, paper size, bindings, colour, and then printing and finishing. Each panel of the concertina is printed using a different print and finishing process. Some panels are embossed or blocked and there are little inserts too. A mini riso-book, tipped in paper samples ... and more!

HANSEL & GRETEL by Simon Armitage Illustrated by Clive Hicks-Jenkins Published April 2019 “Not a sugary dream, but a nightmare in eight scenes: make no bones about poet Simon Armitage’s contemporary retelling of the tale most familiar in the Brothers Grimm version. Hansel and Gretel’s plight becomes that of child refugees, whose parents’ agonising decision is to abandon their offspring to give them their only chance of surviving war. Armitage took his cue from the darkly imaginative illustrations by artist Clive Hicks-Jenkins, who has now translated the original visions from the puppet show, Armitage’s words are the constantly shining white pebbles guiding the piece; his final verbal riff on light and dark will be even better savoured on the published page.” - Rian Evans, The Guardian

WHITE HORSES Illustrated by Eric Ravilious & Alice Patullo

Published March 2019 The tale of Eric Ravilious’ and the ‘lost’ Puffin Picture Book is well known. Sadly, a combination of bad timing and war put paid to the projected Puffin and for many years the dummy was thought to have been lost or destroyed. The working title was either Downland Man or White Horses, and centred on the wonderful downland watercolours that Ravilious completed in a flurry of activity in late 1939. Now, at last, the ‘lost’ Puffin has been recreated, using Ravilious’ original watercolours and with the black and white drawings completed by contemporary illustrator, Alice Pattullo. Paperback 32pp 220mm x 180mm ISBN 978-1-912066-61-2 £15.00

We are thrilled to have re-published Quiz, by Enid Marx. It is by far the scarcest of her wartime lithographed books, mainly because of it’s small size and ephemeral quality. This reissue is spot lithographed in East London, as was the original, and comes with the little envelope so it can be posted off much in the same way as the Quiz of 1942.

VISA AND SOLO Limited edition of 500 copies

by Otto Graphic

Visa and Solo is a folding book from Design For Today. It is designed, and hand screen-printed in four colours by Otto Graphic from his studio in Bath, in a limited edition of 500 copies. Otto’s work takes its inspiration from mid-century Polish poster art and Russian Constructivist designs, known for their montage of photos, type, and bold, printed design elements. There are also echoes of the infographics pioneered by Gerd Arnst and the mid 1940s Isotype Institute children’s books of Marie Neurath. Otto experiments with new designs and pushes the boundaries of visual language. In Visa and Solo Otto offers a witty socio-political commentary on the perils, and temptations, of modern day shopping. ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’, ‘Buy One, Get One Free’, ‘Earn Bonus Points’ The familiar supermarket slogans are set alongside bold bright, constructivist graphics as figures hurry to shop!

Heads, Bodies & Legs by Alice Pattullo Heads, Bodies & Legs is based on the centuries old parlour-game of consequences. Three or more players play the game, each drawing a section of a body, then concealing their contribution before passing the drawing on. The Surrealists adopted the game, renaming it ‘Exquisite Corpses’, enjoying the surreal possibilities and unexpected consequences. This contemporary version is illustrated by Alice Pattullo, and printed by spot lithography. The book arrives uncut, allowing the owner the choice of having fun with the scissors, or simply to enjoy the mid-century inspired illustrations.

The Bantam Picture Books were published during the darkest days of WW2, at a time of paper shortag es and rationing. However, despite, perhaps even in defiance of circumstances, the quality of wartime book illustration blossomed. This was never more evident than in The Bantams which are recognised today as amongst the finest exampl es of 1940s autolithograph ed children’s books. They were the brainchild of Noel Carring ton who commis sioned the cream of the available illustrators for these little books. They were printed on thin paper, roughly stapled, and few have survived, but their quality shines.
