DESIGN FOR TODAY Winter & Spring 2017-18

Welcome Welcome to the new catalogue from Design For Today. It’s now two years since our launch and with new books to showcase, and more to follow, we’re having fun! This Summer saw a special book from Jonny Hannah, The Captain’s Alphabet, and I’m thrilled to be able to re-print Quiz, a little gem from Enid Marx, first published in 1942. We are proud to print in Britain and most of our books are printed in East London using spot lithography, a craft based process where the artist has complete control. Our editions are small, bridging the gap between artist’s editions and mass market books, and we are so grateful to all our stockists and to those who support our publications and keep encouraging small publishers like ourselves.

A boy grows.

As Time Passes ... by Madalena Matoso & Isabel Minhós Mar tins As Time Passes .... boys grow, carpets fade, tracks become roads, words change, shadows move ... but some things remain forever. This thoughtful, and wonderfully illustrated book is the first English language translation of Isabel Minhós Martins’ exploration of the passing of time. As Time Passes we change, our environment changes and our understanding of time itself, seasons, years and decades, develops too. Here it is explored sensitively and humourously through Madalena Matoso’s stunning illustrations. A book for all ages. 44pp 200mm x 225mm hardback ISBN: 978-0-9932866-5-0 £12.95

The Print Shop is a celebration of 40 Years of Calverts, the Printers Co-op based in the heart of East London’s Bethnal Green. It illustrates the story of a book as it progresses from scribble, to dummy, to selecting fonts, paper size, bindings, colour and then printing and finishing. Each panel of the concertina is printed using a different print and finishing process. Some panels will be die-cut, others embossed or blocked and there will be little inserts too. A mini risobook, tipped in paper samples ... and more!

STOREYS is designed and illustrated by Esther Cox, a textile designer living and working in Brighton. It is a book designed to be cut out to form three storeys, in the tradition of those ‘Heads, Legs & Bodies parlour games much loved by the Surrealists and children everywhere. The book is a playful adventure of pattern and architecture inspired by the journey of the Modernist movement in 20th Century British architecture as well as the textures and designs of John Piper. Open the book, cut and flip the sections to create your own modernist facades! Esther’s work has recently been featured in a pair of posters for London Transport.

VISA AND Visa and Solo is a folding book from Design For Today. It is designed, and hand screen-printed in four colours by Otto Graphic from his studio in Bath, in a limited edition of 500 copies. Otto’s work takes its inspiration from mid-century Polish poster art and Russian Constructivist designs, known for their montage of photos, type, and bold, printed design elements. There are also echoes of the infographics pioneered by Gerd Arnst and the mid 1940s Isotype Institute children’s books of Marie Neurath. Otto experiments with new designs and pushes the boundaries of visual language. In Visa and Solo Otto offers a witty socio-political commentary on the perils, and temptations, of modern day shopping. ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’, ‘Buy One, Get One Free’, ‘Earn Bonus Points’ The familiar supermarket slogans are set alongside bold bright, constructivist graphics as figures hurry to shop. This is a modernist picture book for adults, although of course can be read by children. It has 24 panels, printed double-sided onto card, and then hand assembled, cut and folded into a square book that can be ‘read’ in a variety of foldings and pairings of images and text.

UP MY STREET by Louise Lockhar t

Up My Street is a 10 panel, double-sided concertina printed in East London by spot lithography. It is designed by Louise Lockhart and is a tribute to those independent, quirky shops of our High Street. It’s also a modern twist on Eric Ravilious’ 1938 High Street and the 1930s lithographed Pere Castor books. On one side are the shop fronts whilst on the reverse are the shopkeepers busy behind their counters. 1.39 metres long! 139cm x 23.5cm ISBN 978-0-9932866-0-5 cello bagged £14.95

Heads, Bodies & Legs by Alice Pattullo

Heads, Bodies & Legs is based on the centuries old parlour-game of consequences. Three or more players play the game, each drawing a section of a body, then concealing their contribution before passing the drawing on. The Surrealists adopted the game, renaming it ‘Exquisite Corpses’, enjoying the surreal possibilities and unexpected consequences. This contemporary version is illustrated by Alice Pattullo, and printed by spot lithography. The book arrives uncut, allowing the owner the choice of having fun with the scissors, or simply to enjoy the mid-century inspired illustrations.

We are thrilled to be re-publishing Quiz, by Enid Marx. It is by far the scarcest of her wartime lithographed books, mainly because of it’s small size and ephemeral quality. This reissue is spot lithographed in East London, as was the original, and comes with the little envelope so it can be posted off much in the same way as the Quiz of 1942.
