Vaportini Imagine getting drunk just by inhaling something. This is what happened when a seemingly passing event ignited the curiosity of Julia Palmer to invent the Vaportini. So what is a Vaportini? It's a whole new concept of having a shot of your favorite vodka. This revolutionary method in consuming alcohol offers another distillation process eliminating any calorie, carb or impurity. To demonstrate, fill the globe with an ounce and a half of an alcoholic drink then place the globe over a lit candle. In a few moments, the spirit is ready to be inhaled. The end result is a pure, smooth, and bursting- with-flavor spirit. And because it is vaporized, even with just a short sniff, the effects are immediately felt. Available at www.vaportini.com
Étoile design by Adriano Rachele In Philosophy class, you will be presented with an object and will be asked what is the first thing you see is. One might answer with the name of the object, but what one actually sees is light. Inspired by the ballerina’s precise and fluid movement, Adriano Rachele created a lamp encapsulating the value of lighting— the Étoile. Manufactured by Slamp, the Étoile is made using several layers of Lentiflex® and the careful placement of LED light bulbs (top, middle, and bottom). Making it more special is its multifaceted aspect casting light in the most dramatic way. Light focused towards the ceiling creates an ambient effect, whereas light coming from the bottom gives a focal source of light. The central light provides a single light source.

llot llov table Osis Edition 1 Well-designed understated furniture pieces are a must when you’re looking for valuable investment items to add to your home. This is a promise embodied in the Osis Edition 1 created by Ania Bauer, Jacob Brinck, Lena Hirche, and Ramon Toshiro —the brains behind the German brand llot llov. Osis Edition 1 is a clever combination of three tables: “Squared and Bold”, comprising of two large tables with different levels, and “Cube”, which is fully closed. Throughout the years, the concept of beauty has evolved through various influences, traditions, and cultures. However beauty is perceived, it will always be a subjective matter

nderstanding beauty, facing it and carrying it, offers its own premium experience when it's wholly achieved. Wellness expert and owner of Luminice, D r. K r i s t i na “ K ayce e” C ue v a s Reyes, shares her insights on how “Skinvesting” and holistic thinking can reflect beauty that comes from within. Currently, the world of advertising practices the imagery and definition of beauty that is seemingly connected to youth and skin color. Being subjected to this, people are often exposed to repetitive terms such as “youthful”, “flawless” and “fair beauty”. Through holistic skin care, Dr. Kaycee encourages her patients to look at beauty beyond what is skin deep. “It is not limited to treating what is only seen but the internal factors that cause these problems to surface.” Holistic skin care is about approaching people and knowing how they are, their orientation, their lifestyle, and overall state physically and psychologically. It's a medical slant of knowing the inclusive causes of their outbreaks and to ensure that these programs are not only given to treat what is on the outside but to bring out a better image that is a result of good health. Dr. Kaycee reminds her patients that treatments and youth can only do so much to outweigh what age may bring. “I always tell my patients that prevention will always be better than cure. And that even as you achieve beauty through different procedures, the idea is to lessen the treatment time by taking better care of your skin especially as it ages.” The beaut y of ex per ienci n g ‘Skinvesting’ is familiarizing with your own body’s needs and undergoing the positive changes they bring in spite of age.
27
Skinvesting is not solely defined by its results but by the process it offers as an exclusive experience. It's the pleasure of being pampered and the comfort of knowing that you are in good hands. Dr. Kaycee shares that a skin care clinic shouldn’t have to be limited as a venue with treatments but a setting where people can find a pause from the daily routine. She envisioned Luminisce, to not only be a private clinic for treatments but a discreet, and elegant place where individuals can feel open, find comfort and peace.
I always tell my patients that prevention will be better than cure. And that even as you achieve beauty through different procedures, the idea is to lessen the treatment time by taking better care of your skin especially as it ages.
From how people are welcomed to being escorted in the room, being able to walk through these services first hand are what makes Skinvesting a premium experience. Thus, the beauty of it all is the grasped result of the person, that not only educates them of their individual needs but an allaround perspective of how beauty and health ought to be merged, seen and experienced through their eyes.

hen I received your message, I was sourcing for fabrics here in HK. Now at the moment, I am doing some new design studies for my Myth dress shirts and RTW pieces.” He wouldn’t have established a name for himself in the industry if his schedule wasn’t as erratic as this. He responded to my email when he returned to Manila. Just to fly to another Asian country again, all in the pursuit of his next iconoclastic suit. His lavish suits go hand-in-hand with his duty as an educator and as an advocate of rising fashion designers in the cut-throat fashion industry. He has also dedicated himself to a number of posh publications, but
before all of that, Rodriguez channeled all that swag on the catwalk. Just like his suits, he took the first step towards a vibrant career. “I started as a model at the age of 18, then retired doing so when I reached 22. He then crafted his first label, “Hypocrite” a contemporary of brands such as Warp, Milkwear and Havoc. His gift for anticipating the movement of fashion trends allowed him to calculate when to discontinue the brand before its decline in the early 2000s. By 2005, a more matured Lev went back into designing and tailoring, giving birth to Rodriguez de Alba. In a few years, it has been rebranded to Levenson Rodriguez

Bespoke. Every piece became a manifesto of his imagery. Perfectly tailored suits bring confidence to the ones wearing them, as he puts it. He has a command of colors and patterns, but he also considers some external factors. Our tropical weather, for instance, would always contradict his suits. Printon-print proficient, he unscrambles the puzzle for an average dresser, “My suits are made for our climate/ weather. I don’t use fusing like most suit makers”. What separates bespoke wear from the market is it gives one the confidence of knowing that they are wearing a style specifically designed for their liking, and tailored to their exact measurements. Choose to hide your body’s flaws or just rest on the satisfaction that your suit enhances your assets. It gives a sense of pride that you’re wearing something that is yours alone. He does not mind going headto-head with giants such as Valentino and Gucci. “I could easily match their quality and tailoring. The fabric however, depends on the clients; if they don’t mind spending for special order fabric like Holland & Sherry, then yes—suits are of the same quality.” “I agreed to do RTW for MYTH in Greenbelt. These are dress shirts for the more advanced aged audience, the conservative ones. These straight to point dress shirts are subtle in colors and don’t have much style details which is a big challenge for me because I love colors, prints, and details. But then again, I need to do this to push myself out of my comfort zone. This project is also for the plus size market, offering sizes, L, XL, XXL.” Rodriguez is also engaged on completing his collaborative work with Darrel Pobre for FaDAL (Fashion Designer Alliance) Manila’s exhibit celebrating their sixth year and showcasing a by-invitation exhibit on May 30.

F
or bonsai master Prof. Juan Lim, the successful cultivation of bonsai has more to do with loving, praising and being grateful to the bonsai. Adherence to the established principles and physical requirements of growing bonsai only comes second to this. “Without love, gratitude and praise, your bonsai will never be worthy of winning,” the professor said. Professor Lim got inspired by his win two years ago that he felt encouraged to go into extensive bonsai culture and growing. It helped, too, that his sister and brother-in-law have been immersed in advanced horticulture for more than 50 years as President and Executive of the Philippine Horticultural Society. He also became interested in horticulture eventually, before starting a deep relationship with bonsai culture. “After winning a trophy, I started taking more extensive studies and practice of bonsai master culturing, reading all the books and buying very good bonsai materials from experienced provincial growers and researchers,” he revealed. He only bought top quality bonsai winners as materials and he still had to completely restructure and reshape them into unrecognizable, violently trimmed structures based on his own future vision of how they should be in five to ten years. No doubt that this university professor got challenged by the sophisticated and complicated way of culturing bonsai. His imagination and creativity were stirred by the strict requirements and the need
32
for in-depth knowledge on the principles of bonsai growing and art culturing, including proper balance, proportion, layering, crookedness of branches, and so on. He gives an example: “The primary branch should be more than double and opposite the secondary, tertiary branches, et cetera.” The living art forms managed to survive in rugged mountains under extreme conditions, their uncommon but poetic forms taking shape over centuries. Yet when they are taken from this environment and into the garden of a suburban home, they could wither and die. This mystery is the challenge that took the interest of the professor. How could he grow it in his own suburban garden? Why is it so sturdy yet so fragile at the same time? This is why the cultivation of bonsai is more of an art than it is a science. It continues to grow, and thrive, in the midst of mystery. But in so far as the professor is concerned, he continues to cultivate his bonsai in an atmosphere of great love, respect and gratitude. Perhaps it is why Professor Lim holds the distinction of having won the most number of trophies in the shortest amount of time—200 awards in two years. “I praise them all always especially for this,” he said, beaming like a proud parent.

aslow’s hierarchy often dictates that shelter is somewhere in the first three of man’s basic needs, but it doesn’t necessarily state the beauty or condition of one’s abode, which is often the product of one’s personal taste. Similarly, the furnishing or acquisition of artworks for such a home is an endeavor which only a privileged few dare undertake with enough time and money. Dr. Joven Cuanang, the founder of Pinto Art Museum, shares some of his insights into the nature of collecting art that may function as décor or investment—or both. Based in an idyllic part of Antipolo, the gallery has undergone several transformations over the years, staying true to its mission to promote young or emerging artists. Pinto used to represent artists who banded together to form the Salingpusa group in the early to mid 1990’s, which had a neo-Social Realism philosophy, but the gallery has since expanded their reach to include young and unrepresented artists. strollers for young children, and a new wing showcasing indigenous or folk art. “Pinto programs artists into its calendar of activities at least a year ahead,” explains Dr. Cuanang. “We now have more artists to consider other than the original Salingpusa. They are from everywhere but we are partial to young ones who have no connections to galleries, true to our mission in helping emerging artists. The artists apply for slots in our calendar. Our curator interviews and assesses their work by visiting their studio or houses, before putting them into our slot. The relationship is developmental. For the Salingpusa, we know their works quite well but we are encouraged by their initiative to break new ground.” “Visiting galleries, going to art fairs here and abroad help in the development of aesthetic appreciation and eventually to a purchase that hopefully will bring joy!” Dr. Cuanang enthuses. When it comes to eventually acquiring an artwork as an investment or for personal reasons, this patron stands firm on universal guidelines. “The best guide on what to buy is how a work affects the wouldbe owner emotionally. It’s about a gut feel, first and foremost. Then, a conscious analysis of the work may follow: the medium, technique, message? Other considerations may come into play, like price and other be-

liefs! For instance, the Chinese consider feng shui as a big factor in their choice.” If fine art isn’t your cup of tea, perhaps pieces that refer to Filipino culture may spark your interest—and these are relatively easy to acquire, from Abel Iloko tapestries or blankets, to T’boli t’nalak woven from abaca. Apart from encouraging the continuation of folk traditions, these pieces, if chosen carefully, can also be prized collectibles. Having recently created the indigenous art wing at Pinto, Dr. Cuanang points out: “It’s also humbling to realize that our forbearers were very advanced in their aesthetics and how deeply they were connected to the environment and the spirit gods. It helps us to know more about ourselves, and for us to become better persons. One who comes from a certain region in our country should know about this cultural legacy for him to appreciate his heritage. If one considers these pieces as just artifacts to be sold or collected for future transactions, then the pieces become bastardized. They must be appreciated in their genuine cultural context. That is the joy that is immeasurable.” When taking the good doctor’s advice, it seems that in art collection, finding that zone that pleases both head and heart is the winning factor to building a treasure trove you’ll cherish, as it appreciates in value through the years.

hen people speak of Japanese culture, the words “simple, minimalist, and delightful” are often some of the terms that come across the conversation. Indeed, it is a known fact that Japanese culture has remained to be authentic and true to their traditions and beliefs. When it comes to food, the experience remains the same. Each creation becomes an expression of their art and a bearer of their culture. Japanese cuisine has elevated the method of food preparation into an art form that requires intricate techniques and the use of simple ingredients to create an unforgettable gastronomic experience. This method is highly inf luenced by the Japanese principle of “Omotenashi,” which translates to the manner of entertaining guests. This means delivering unparalleled service and hospitality, and always aiming for delight. For Japanese chefs, it is important to attain a multi-sensorial experience, even in the simple act of eating sushi. Loft Magazine is featuring the creations of Chef Antonio Jose Reyes, the chef and owner of Privatus—a private dining service that features fusion cuisine using modern techniques. ince the dawn of history, calligraphy has not only been a means of expressing significant events but a presentation of stories beautifully composed as an entire art form. It is a medium where emotions take shape through handmade characters, tailored by every stroke. Calligraphy is a personal art. As shared by calligrapher, Patrick Cabral, it is a craft that connects people through the written word; “It adds personality and soul to the piece. It gives off a different look and feel to the word, quote or statement.” Even during his childhood days, Patrick found it to be a skill and direction that he continues to expand beyond its main purpose. In 2014, he began “Names with Stories” —a project where he52 asked people to submit their names, their origin, and what it meant
to them. He chose the ones that he found to be interesting whether because they were humorous, serious or addressing a social issue. “I interpret the names in various calligraphy styles. It allows me to have interaction between myself and the ones who follow my work. Getting to know a piece of their personal history also adds a different spin into the whole creative process.” As a craft composed in its own matter, it is an apparent fact how the art world is rapidly connecting itself with digital art that breeds a new culture of statement pieces, personalized packaging and edited typography. But even in the presence of growing technology, one does not compare the value of an art form that is skillfully handcrafted. It is still an experience that although understated, it is still a timeless experience.
loft
“Calligraphy can catch you off guard in the midst of the usual type encountered each day. With the flow of the letters and the flourishes, a word can be written to express emotion. As an art form, it is relevant as the writer conveys a message that people are happy to read when beautifully written.” Calligrapher Alexis Ventura shares that, “As the world becomes more and more digital, the value of something handmade and handwritten becomes more valuable. It grabs attention because it is different.” Alexis has been sharing her experiences to people, on what role calligraphy plays in her life for the past three years. Prior to becoming the founder of the Ink Scribbler, she worked as a product manager for a multinational company. With what began as a hobby, soon turned into a

craft that Alexis carries as her new found practice today. As much as it is a personal form of expression, it is also a learning experience carrying various styles and its individual disciplines. “I started experimenting on the pen without knowing the basic techniques, and so the style is very rough and raw. It took me a while before I could create smoother and more romantic letters, but the learning process allowed me to create something of my own.” In spite of how calligraphy may not be as visible as people want it to be—it will continue to carry its form, its beauty and its admired connection between those who make it and those who read into every stroke.

There is something distinctly old world, ancient, and beautiful about it. After all, it is also known as the “Illuminated Letters”, where writing in calligraphy is considered a skill known as an act of devotion, because writing beautifully means you are giving light to the ‘Word’. –Patrick Cabral

The history behind the Nielson Tower and how adapting to the times constantly pushes it forward to new heights
Repurposing an Icon writer
ANSON YU
F
or the past 78 years, the Nielson Tower has seen it all, until a previously-humble portion of Makati transformed from a rice field to the county’s premiere business district. Through it all, it has seen the rise and fall of corporations, stock markets, governments and even hemlines. It has managed to do so by gracefully reinventing itself every few decades or so. For a tower, it only stands a mere two stories off the ground. But at one time it was the tallest structure in the area. Built in 1937 by Laurie Reuben Nielson, the New Zealand-born British businessman saw the potential for aviation in the country, since many of the mines then were located in remote locations. Having been in Manila since the mid1930s with his family, his active involvement in securities and mining led to the vision of creating a proper airport for the capitol of the Philippines. Nielson then went on to gather a few other investors to raise funds to start building the new airport. But the problem was the location, as they needed an expanse of land to build the airport. At first they thought about a partnership with the government to build it on a turnkey basis. When Enrique Zobel de Ayala, senior managing partner at Ayala y Cia heard about the project, he offered the group a portion of the company’s hacienda. Aside from being near to Manila and sparsely populated, it was clearly visible from an aerial perspective that the property allowed clear landing from all sides. The Philippine Air Taxi Company (PATCO) was one of the first airlines to operate at the airport, ferrying supplies, equipment and personnel to the mines up in Baguio and back to Manila. After an accident in 1938 it ceased to operate, but was reborn in 1941 as Philippine Airlines.
Inspired by a familiar image inside an airport, many would compare the scene to that of passengers expecting a flight.

In October 1941, all commercial flights at Nielson Airport ceased as it was transformed into the headquarters of the Far Eastern Air Force. This was done to anticipate a possible attack from Japan at that time. That day came in December 9, but the attack was so severe that the defending troop was forced to retreat. During their occupation, the Japanese took over the airport and made it one of their military headquarters. After Philippine liberation in 1945, the government decided to move all civilian aviation activity further down south to Paranaque in 1948, and the Ayalas regained control over the property. Joseph McMicking, an Ayala executive, was inspired to convert the airport into a city. After the war, people were eager to leave the destruction and the bad memories behind. Everyone wanted a fresh start. So the company began planning and constructing. Perhaps as a homage to the memory of the airport, two runways were redeveloped as two of the center’s most important byways: Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas. Nielson Tower was converted to a police station in 1949, and when the Ayalas began their building program, it became the office for their Integrated Property Management Corporation. In the late 1980s, the structure was converted into the Nielson Tower Club and Restaurant, a club for Ayala executives which is also open to the public. Food writer, Doreen Fernandez, describes the interior in the 1992 edition of Lasa, her guide book to dining in Manila:
loft
“The customs and immigration area are now function rooms and the tower, now a bar, as well as the photographic blow up on the wall remind us how times have changed flying as well as the Makati landscape.” Those who ate there remember that the dining room was done in a Burgundy color scheme with a capiz shell ceiling made to look like a Tiffany lamp. As for the food, Ms. Fernandez described it as “Continental, strongly Hispanic and features “antebellum Philippine cuisine or recipes from elite Philippine kitchen in the 19th century.” The menu featured classic Spanish dishes like Sopa de Ajo seca (thick garlic soup), Lengua Estofada (Ox tongue in brown sauce with mushroom and olives) or Andalucia (beef braised in red wine and tomato) and of course the Paella. But it wasn’t afraid to break tradition, experimenting with local ingredients and creating original dishes like Delicia de balut—balut baked in herbs and spices and served under a puff pastry. The restaurant lasted up until 1996 when the Ayalas decided to make it the home of the Filipinas Heritage Library. What used to be the airport pre-departure area was now a bookstore dedicated to locally published books. The function rooms, tower, and the room at the back became venues for lectures and seminars. Occasionally they would be used as exhibit spaces for artists. The library itself was in the basement and this is where one would make extra time reading old, rare local magazines from the 1960s and 1970s. In 2012 the library was moved to the sixth floor of the Ayala Museum and Scottish restaurateur Colin Mackay met up with the Ayala group to pitch an idea: to pay homage to the golden age of travel, emphasizing the building’s Art Deco heritage. The team started of by showing off their vision for the pre-departure lounge, which would be the designated bar area, whose centerpiece would feature a marble bar counter with brass accents, a wall of faced mirrors behind it. The rest of the walls would be covered with walnut paneling with brass accents that formed a triangle pattern, subtly referring to the location of the restaurant in the Ayala Triangle. By the time Mackay and his interior design team were done with their thorough presentation, the team at Ayala were now convinced that they have found the right man to manage the old airport. They asked him about the name of the proposed restaurant and got “Blackbird”, also known as the Lockheed SR-71, the fastest spy plane during the Cold War. When it was time to create the menu, Mackay again wanted it to reflect that bygone era of travel. In a newspaper interview, he has admitted that “I’ve taken the grill concept of the ’30s and mixed it with a combination of classic European grill and Southeast Asian flavors”. This was not the case as he certainly went as far as the Northern Asia and the Middle East to find inspirations for his food. For example flatiron steak featured kimchi and gochujang (Spicy Korean
bean paste). The lamb cutlets are served with tsatsiki (Greek yogurt and cucumber) and muhammara, a spicy Turkish dip. Some have used the “F” word or “fusion” to describe his menu but Mackay briskly denies it. His philosophy when it comes to food is to take a product and let its flavor shine. You can taste this with Blackbird’s interpretation of the burger. They made it richer with combination of chuck eye and rib eye. To make it stand out from other burgers, they topped it with smoked mozzarella, chili jam, and pickles. Since it opened in July, 2014, Blackbird has been viewed by the public as a fine dining restaurant. Though admittedly this is not what Mackay wants. He wants people, especially those from Makati, to see this as part of their heritage as it was the first building in the area. Whether Mackay can achieve that, remains to be seen, but as of the moment he is setting the bar high for the future caretakers of this former airport.

Simply put, privacy is also the right to be left alone

rivacy has traditionally been seen as an inherent right for people to be left alone. When a marketer knocks on your door, you have the right to ignore and not entertain him altogether. In fact, it’s well within your right to erect a fence within your property to ensure that random people won't go knocking at your doorstep. But over time, such a right has been challenged on various fronts that privacy nowadays is becoming more and more like a privilege or, rather, even a luxury. The marketer does not need to knock on your door as he already knows your phone number, email, social media accounts, and probably even most taste preferences. The concession to shed privacy is a choice many are implicitly and unwittingly making nowadays through the Internet. The phrase “If you’re not paying the product, you are the product” has often been bandied about nowadays, as people trade personal data on the Internet through social media that in turn mines and curates that data and peddles it to advertisers. More and more, as we become digitized, our entire selves are being reduced to mere bytes of data in an optimized algorithm. But as privacy becomes more endangered today, its scarce value has become more pronounced in those few remaining vestiges where it remains distilled and guaranteed and even enshrined. In terms of data privacy, there are various devices and software services that now purport to protect your privacy while you enjoy the convenience of the Internet. The most famous privacy-protection communications device as of late is the ominously named Blackphone, a smartphone with supposed cloaking capabilities. The device is said to have sophisticated level of encryption and privacy features

designed to protect and make anonymous communications data, whether through voice, text, or Internet data. In terms of software, there is also a host of products and services now available from security vendors that tout user privacy and protection at a certain cost. But besides digital privacy, personal privacy is now also becoming a highly valued premium in terms of protecting one’s assets such as wealth and investments, and even family. When choosing resort destinations, it is immediately evident that the more private a getaway is, the more it offers one an opportunity to enjoy a slice of solitude, the more expensive and premium it is. In ancient times, the earliest symbolic manifestation of privacy in popular art was the fig leaf that was placed over the genitalia of butt-naked statues. The usage harks back to the Biblical episode where Adam and Eve used fig leaves to cover up their nudity after eating the fruit from the Forbidden Tree. But today, such fig leaves that offer any semblance of privacy are becoming harder to reach and pluck, as they seem more like pieces of luxury in the garden of convenience.

ur technologies have easily become an extension of our daily lives. We usually spend the day with habitual glances to our cellphone screens or a random check for new emails. But do you still remember how it feels to not be beholden to a gadget? Isn’t it such a liberating feeling when we have moments where we can sit back and read a novel, while sipping a cup of freshly brewed coffee? Or maybe those days when we engage ourselves to physical conversations and rekindle memories with our friends and loved ones. It has indeed become a challenge for most of us to disengage in the daily cycle of responsibilities. The nature of the new workplace has equated profitability with the concept of being “busy,” with us getting stuck to the tasks that require us to be online at all times. The portability of our gadgets has enabled us to work anytime and anywhere we want. But at what cost? Once in a while, it may serve as an invigorating feeling to detach and experience life more intimately, without the mediation of any technology. To feel the palpable realities and go through the emotions that make us human – from the happiness of taking a plunge in the clear blue waters of the beach, concocting your own recipes and serving them to your friends, or going on an afternoon stroll at the nearby park. When all is said and done, one’s ultimate luxury is being able to enjoy the simple things in life. And these are the things that you are probably missing-out on.

The Privilege of success
S
uccess may be measurable, despite being relatively different for each individual. However, even Alain de Botton muses that, “The materialistic view of happiness of our age starkly revealed in our understanding of the word ‘luxury’”. It’s evident that a chunk of the population assesses their accomplishments and fortune through the acquisition of over-the-top items hyper-marketed to death. So that got us thinking, what about subtlety? Sometimes, value may be found in the obscure, or in this case, the discreet call for the degree of exclusivity they bring forth.

A scent can take you back to your fondest place because, among other things, your olfactory nerve is located very close to your amygdala. It is a part of your brain connected to the experience of emotion. Their name along with their reputation is easily synonymous with conviction. Bars are open to everyone who can afford a few beverages, especially when they are reasonably priced. But then again common thinking would lead us to ask: what’s so special about being reasonable? Being copious in style takes effort and possibly a few glasses of Veuve Clicquot Champagne. P r o d u c e d a t Ve u v e C l icq uot Pon s a rd i n , a French champagne house established in Reims specia lizing in choice products and founded in 1772, a sip of this drink equates to an unforgettable experience of a lifetime. In 2013, Prosecco has officially surpassed Champagne sales in terms of volume shipments, worldwide. It’s bubbly and dry with hints of citrus, apples, and white flowers. When these slightly familiar characteristics meet desensitized, untrained taste buds, the drink is naturally mistaken for Champagne. It’s called Prosecco and it originated from the Veneto region in northeast Italy, not from France. The first known mention of the drink was in 1593. Likewise, the Glera grapes used in the production of Champagne and Prosecco are regulated by their corresponding governing bodies. Prosecco is not bottled until it is done with the second filtration process through a steel tank, utilizing the Charmat method. This said method makes Prosecco a more affordable option for consumers who would like to enjoy a sparkling drink everyday. Prosecco has steadily grown in popularity worldwide. In 2013 Prosecco volume sales rose by 11.5%* when it globally overtook its French rival wine Champagne in sales for the first time ever. Fancy some Italian? * www.thedrinksbusiness.com

A Sense of Nostalgia writer
I
hear the footsteps of children actively running around and about, unmindful of the reminders of their worried parents. I see people rushing to carry trays of what I suppose will be the dinner for the night. I listen to the mutter of voices over at the corridor echoing the giggles. Oh! What a delight it is to have seen the same scenario hundreds of years ago, as I lay still in the center of the house, as an old reminder that sometimes an object is more than what it looks. The greatest kept treasures of the world did not come from the technological advancement in today’s generation nor is it the excessively priced modern commodities sold in stores. In retrospect, the priceless items are those which withstand antiquity and have been passed on from generation to generation – passed on to us as heritage. The meaning of heritage varies from one’s origin. The word heritage for the French is a term entirely related with legacy. For the English, it is relative in inheriting something of significance, for example taking over ownership of a vast land property. We Filipinos are associated with the word Pamana.

Pamana speaks of a long standing tale as old as time. It gives us a glimpse of the rich history of our ancestors—their plight, their triumph, their mark of bravery, and the stories of love and sorrow. For Filipinos, legacy is not simply a thing that is preserved for the purpose of letting your great grandchildren get a glimpse of the past, but the ability of the object to make you remember the emotions that transcends through time. But why should we even bother with the idea of legacy? What is in it that we should take a closer look at? Again with all the fascination the contemporary way of living brings us, it is easy to lose sense of what is essential. Legacy affects different touch points in life because it serves as a capsule of personal memory, and an anchor of culture and tradition. However, the poignant facet is that - as social beings, people crave for emotional assurance. We get affectionate. People place importance to objects that re-
87
flect their inner core and belief, and in turn put sentimental value in these things. Sentimental value is in a higher hierarchy than any type of value since it is irreplaceable and has no price tag. Can you imagine the agony of letting go of your family’s ancestral home for a trivial amount of money? Pamana is a reminder of lasting memories like our carefree childhood summer days. It is something beyond any monetary or economic value – it can be the majestic set of pearls that once dangled around your grandmother when mod was still the fashion statement that every woman wore, or simply a candy foil wrapper from that time you first met your spouse under a lovely night at a carnival show.
