2012 MODEL YEAR CATALOGUE
Now, further testing and advancements in CervĂŠlo-developed technologies allow us to bring the new generation of S-series bicycles into 2012: Introducing the S5; because aero is always on. The S5 uses the unparalleled aerodynamics of the P4 project to make it faster than previous models, but we also added the Project California knowledge to produce a truly aero bicycle but with 12% more torsional and bottom bracket rigidity. This is a bicycle which secured Tour de France victories in both sprint finishes and mountain stages in the two weeks after its debut. Learn more at your CervĂŠlo retailer and at S5.cervelo.com
Welcome
Thank you for considering Cervélo. Winning is but one result of intelligent engineering. Our bicycles have helped athletes earn victories from Paris to Kona, including 2010 UCI Road World Champion Thor Hushovd, 2011 European Ironman Champion Caroline Steffen, and 2010 UCI World Time Trial Champion Emma Pooley. When we founded Cervélo 16 years ago, our defining principle was to engineer the best bicycles with function-driven designs. We continue to search for–and adopt–the most advanced engineering tools and innovative technologies, to ensure that every feature we add improves the bicycle’s performance–not just its looks. For the past 16years, Cervélo designs have challenged the status quo and pushed the limits of engineering with the goal of helping you achieve your highest potential. Cervélo Women
Cervélo Women
Do women need a different bicycle? Or just one that fits? At Cervélo, our defining principle is to engineer bicycles with function-driven designs for everyone. In contrast to the myriad of theories put forth by others, Cervélo’s is clear and uncomplicated: If the rider is shorter, the frame reach should be shorter – not just the top tube measurement. Likewise, if the rider is taller, the frame reach should be longer. By ensuring the seat and handlebars are in the right place for you, Cervélo bicycles make it easy to maintain a comfortable riding position. Because we understand the more comfortable you are, the more enjoyable the ride. At Cervélo, we don’t just claim they fit, we engineer them to fit. “I don’t think there’s really such a thing as a women’s specific bike…It’s not like we have different proportions to men – I think that’s a bit of a misconception. There are women with long legs and short legs, and men with long legs and short legs…Take Cervélo frames: the small frame is small enough that the shortest person can ride them.” - Emma Pooley, Height:157cm, Team Garmin-Cervélo and current UCI World Time Trial Champion

Project California In 2008, Cervélo launched an ambitious engineering project in California with the mandate to bring the highest level of composites engineering knowledge to our bicycles. With the unwavering objective to leverage the most advanced engineering design tools available, we incorporated the sophisticated composite analysis tools used in Formula 1 and America’s Cup yacht racing. For Cervélo, bringing that technology inhouse (rather than simply borrowing it for one or two models), allows us to continue to expand those technology benefits throughout the entire product line. The outcome from this research were advancements in materials application, component integration, and a better understanding of the subtle relationship between comfort and stiffness. Today, every Cervélo model benefits from the lessons learned at Project California, so that you can feel the difference intelligent engineering makes. The following Project California features are available on various Cervélo models: • Bicycle specific layups: Model-by-model and size-by-size, our carbon lay-ups are individually designed for maximum performance. Project California taught us how to further fine-tune our lay-ups in two ways: first, identifying specific areas where we can strategically add or remove fibers, and second, by analytically pointing out the optimum blend of carbon fiber type, quantity and orientation. Understanding bicycle specific layups allowed us to develop the next generation of Squoval tubing, which incorporates new shapes and thinner sections for added comfort and stiffness where needed. • Lab vs. Reality: For a laboratory test to be meaningful, it must mimic reality. Even before Project California officially began, Cervélo engineers were gathering strain gauge data on frame behaviour from road tests with both amateur and pro riders. We knew this real-world data did not match the current industry-standard torsion test. As a result, Project California engineers developed a new torsion test that produces the same strain signature as real-world riding. This Cervélo Torsion Test revealed a significant difference in the distribution of stress in the top tube and down tube and higher bending stresses in the seat tube. Now, when we take away material to reduce weight we know you won’t miss it, and when we reinforce a selected area of the frame, we know you’ll benefit from it on the road. • Stronger than Industry Standard: Even most ordinary bikes pass the industry standard tests. That’s not good enough for Cervélo. Carbon frames are pretty easy if you only test to the minimum standard. All Cervélo bicycles pass the required minimums, and go beyond that to pass even higher internal standards. Every Cervélo standard is at least 20% higher, and several are multiple times higher. For example, our head tube impact requirement is 87% higher plus we use a solid steel fork (2x as stiff) & solid bearings. Another example is bottom bracket fatigue life achieved with even our lightest frame is 2,000,000+ cycles, versus 100,000 cycles required by the standard.
Asymmetrically widened bottom bracket shell for more stiffness at a lower weight
Wider BB shell allows for a wider nondrive chain stay, a major contributor to a more efficient power transfer
No chainrings on the non-drive side, so more space to widen the BB shell BBright uses that space
The extra width of the BB shell allows for a wider down tube on the non-drive side. This increases system stiffness, while the resulting optimized carbon lay-up reduces system weight
BBrightTM
The Bottom Bracket Standard: BBright™ BBright™ is the first bottom bracket (BB) standard to incorporate both an oversized 30mm axle and oversized frame tubes (up to 11mm wider than standard bottom brackets). BBright™ offers the optimal combination of stiffness and weight for the overall system (crankset and frame together), with the biggest gains coming from the frame’s lateral stiffness. • Wider frame tubes creates a stiffer and lighter frame. As an example, the larger seat tube is 57% stiffer. • Large 30mm diameter axle for a stiffer crankset. • Designed and developed together: the stiffest and lightest system. R-series Squoval™ Road Bicycles R-series bicycles are engineered to optimize strength, stiffness and comfort, while offering low weight in every situation. Whether you are sprinting for victory, or climbing the highest cols, an R-series bicycle offers the best collaboration of our Project California engineering. The Smartwall™ optimized second generation Squoval™ tubes place material where it is needed most, and remove it where it is not. This not only allows us to increase stiffness, but maintains maximum comfort in all conditions. With four different Cervélo R-series bicycles to choose from, you are guaranteed to find a Squoval™ bicycle which meets your needs, but exceeds your expectations. Project California Technology • All R-series bicycles benefit from the lessons learned in Project California. Ultra-thin seat stays • The second generation R-series frames feature even thinner seat stays than before further enhancing vertical compliance and vibration absorption for a smooth ride. Single bend cable routing • One curve, in one plane, with the perfect radius and direction eliminates friction and ensures smooth, crisp shifting in all conditions. BBright™ • Oversized axle and wider bottom bracket on the non-drive side provides an asymmetric, stiffer and lighter bottom bracket system. To learn more, go to BBright.net
Cervélo optimized 13/8” tapered steerer tube • There are several standards for the fork’s lower bearing diameter, and it might seem obvious as we push the limits of rigidity and low weight, that bigger should be better. However, Project California research showed that if the fork gets too big, it becomes too stiff to absorb enough energy. Excess energy then gets transferred to the frame, requiring additional material for adequate strength, while increasing weight and reducing comfort. Project California analysis and testing showed that 13/8” bearing is the optimum: stiff enough for the most aggressive handling, but just flexible enough for comfort and energy absorption without adding excess weight. In fact, since Cervélo developed this optimum combination of stability, strength and comfort, it has quickly become the new industry standard. Smartwall™ • We put more material on the sides of the tubes, including strips of ultra-high modulus carbon, to enhance side-to-side stiffness for better handling and power transmission. At the same time we reduce material elsewhere for greater comfort and lower weight. Second Generation Squoval™ • Squarer tubes have more material far from the frame center plane to increase side-to-side stiffness. • Convex walls & rounded corners improve torsional stiffness & prevent denting and buckling. • The result: a stiff, strong and light tube engineered specifically for bicycle loads.
R3
On the podium at Paris-Roubaix six times in six starts–with three victories–the R3 combines all the benefits of a stiff & light bicycle, with the strength and comfort needed to win on the cobbles of northern France. • Project California Technology • BBright™ • Second Generation Squoval™ tubing • Ultra-thin seat stays • Smartwall™ • Cervélo optimized 13/8” tapered steerer tube

Aerodynamics
We have been engineering the world’s most aerodynamic bicycles since 1995, because we know that “aero is always on”. Athletes who ride Cervélos understand this, and benefit by winning the world’s top road races, time trials and triathlons. The benefits of aerodynamics are widely understood in timed races like time trials and triathlons. However, riders who understand that aerodynamics still help at lower speeds - while climbing and even while drafting - can benefit by choosing an aero bicycle for any ride. In solo riding on level ground, 80% of the cyclist’s power goes to fighting the wind.* Even while drafting, wind resistance is still the biggest force opposing your forward motion;** aerodynamic drag force holds you back more than all other forces combined. Reducing aerodynamic drag yields a greater performance benefit than any other design improvement you can make to a bicycle. Decreasing drag buys every rider a performance boost: free speed, energy savings, power savings, and time savings. Whichever way you quantify the benefit, an aerodynamic bicycle lets you choose how to spend the aero dividend – save power until you make your move, or simply stay with the faster group on a hard ride. But it’s not enough to simply stand a bicycle in a wind tunnel, so we improved wind tunnel testing techniques and developed engineering tools to make our testing more realistic, more repeatable, and faster. Cervélo was the first company to use a wind tunnel test bicycle with interchangeable “skins”, the first company to put a mannequin on a bicycle for our wind tunnel tests, the first to correlate our computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (including rider) with wind tunnel results. All these firsts help us investigate more ideas faster, so we can design faster bicycles more quickly than ever before. No other bicycle company has this level of in–house aerodynamic engineering expertise. With 16 years of intense aero engineering development, you can count on Cervélo bicycles to be the best performing aerodynamic bicycles in the world. We take aerodynamics seriously because it affects you in all riding conditions: uphill, downhill & flat; riding alone & drafting. Aero is always on. *Martin et. al., “Validation of a Mathematical Model for Road Cycling Power”, Journal of Applied Biomechanics, 1998 **Jukendrup, High Performance Cycling, 2002

S-series Aero Road Bicycles 16 years of aero road bicycle development have made the S-series the benchmark aero road bike. These bicycles are not only faster in the wind tunnel, but proven in the real world. Stiff enough to win professional sprint finishes including the World Championships and the green Points Leader’s jersey at the Tour de France, yet light enough to climb the steepest cols. The best choice for every riding condition and the only aero bicycle comfortable enough to race on the cobble stones. TrueAero™ shapes • Cervélo’s library of scientifically-derived location-specific airfoils, engineered to work in the complex flow conditions of rider and component interactions.
Internal Cable Stops ICS3 • No housing inside the frame for crisper shifting and 200g less weight. • The Integrated top tube adjuster allows on-the-fly shift fine-tuning, a first for internal cable systems. Smartwall™ • We put more material on the sides of the tubes including strips of ultra-high modulus carbon to enhance side-to-side stiffness for better handling and power transmission; reduces material for greater comfort and lower weight. Shielding stays • The rear brake hides behind the shoulders of the seat stays and hides from the wind.
Single bend cable routing • One curve, in one plane, with the perfect radius and direction to ensure smooth, crisp shifting in all conditions.
Aero head tube • Narrowing the section between the bearings reduces the frontal area and thereby the aerodynamic resistance.
BBright™ • Oversized axle and wider bottom bracket on the non-drive side provides and asymmetric, stiffer and lighter bottom bracket system. To learn more, go to BBright.net
Dropped down tube • Smoothes airflow from fork to frame. • Minimizes turbulence behind fork crown.
Optimized head tube taper • The Cervélo Project California developed 13/8” standard is the sweet-spot for strength, lateral stiffness, handling and comfort. • Smaller than 13/8” means less stiffness for the same weight. • Bigger then 13/8”requires added material for strength, resulting in higher weight and lower comfort.
Built for bottles • Fastest frame, one bottle or two. • An Aero water bottle virtually disappears on the S5. Extended cutout • Maximized rear wheel cutout. • Smoothes airflow from frame to wheel.

P-series
Triathlon and Time Trial Bicycles Cervélo Triathlon/Time trial bicycles have won more pro races than any other, and they are by far the most popular bicycles at Ironman and time trial events for athletes of all levels. Boasting revolutionary designs developed through our extensive testing, Cervélo has become the most copied TT bicycle in history.
Aero head tube • Narrowing the section between the bearings reduces the frontal area and thereby the aerodynamic resistance.
TrueAero™ shapes • Long-tail airfoils to lower drag. • Cervélo uses the ideal shape for every flow condition from the TrueAero™ shape library.
P2 rear wheel cutout • No other feature decreases drag as much as shielding the rear wheel from the airflow. • The P2 cutout is special in that despite the tube shape tapering down in the rear, the cutout stays at tire width for an optimal transition of the airflow onto the rear wheel.
Smartwall™ • We put more material on the sides of the tubes including strips of ultra-high modulus carbon to enhance side-to-side stiffness for better handling and power transmission. At the same time we reduce material elsewhere for greater comfort and lower weight. Internal Cable Stops ICS3 • No housing inside the frame for crisper shifting and 200g less weight. • The integrated top tube adjuster allows on-the-fly shift fine-tuning. A first for an internal cable system.
P2 aero seat stays • TrueAero™ shapes in the direction of the airflow (horizontal). • S-bend for additional vertical compliance.
P3 aero seat stays • TrueAero™ shapes in the direction of the airflow (horizontal). • Integrated intersection with seat tube that also shields the rear brake from the airflow. P3 curved rear wheel cutout • More rear wheel coverage by the cutout results in lower drag for seat tube and rear wheel. • The P3 rear wheel cutout is arguably the most copied feature in TT/Tri bicycle design.
P2
A two time winner of Ironman Hawaii, the P2 is performance tailored for the athlete with a higher handlebar height. The best value in the model line, a test ride will quickly convince you of its performance. • TrueAero™ shapes • Rear wheel cutout • Smartwall™ • Internal Cable Stops ICS
P3
The results speak for themselves: more wins in triathlons and time trials than any other bicycle in history. No wonder the P3 remains the benchmark for the entire industry, and the most copied Triathlon/TT bicycle in history. • TrueAero™ shapes • Curved cutout construction • Smartwall™ • Internal Cable Stops ICS
Track Bicycles Superior stiffness for sprints and the best aerodynamics for pursuit events–all at low weights previously unheard of on the track. Our track bicycle delivers performance whatever the discipline or your performance level.
T1
The aluminum T1 is quickly changing perceptions of what a world class track frame should be. While over 500 grams lighter than most wellknown carbon track frames, its torsional and bottom bracket stiffness surpass all others.
T4 The T4 is based on the P4 design – with changes to improve its performance and optimize it for track use. The bottom bracket gusset boosts the overall stiffness, and lowers the aerodynamic drag. Also the carbon layup was tuned using Project California technology to further boost lateral and torsional stiffness to meet the heavy demands of track racing. This bicycle is ideal for timed events, but often used for sprint and mass-start events too.
