It’s 1960, and Dino Signori is unhappy. The problem is his cycling shoes— they’re leather-soled lace-ups with nail-on cleats, a design unchanged since the first Giro d’Italia was held in 1909, 50 years prior. As a racer, Dino Signori is keenly aware that cycling shoes are the foundation of the whole rider/ bicycle connection. He knows how much bicycles have improved since that first Giro. So he decides it’s time shoes followed suit, establishing his first workshop in Maser, in Italy’s Treviso province, and names it by taking the first two letters of his last and first names—SIDI. As a former racer, Dino Signori is keenly aware that cycling shoes are the foundation of the whole rider/bicycle connection. He knows how much bicycles have improved since he stopped racing, and he decides it’s time shoes followed suit. He’s just the man to do it, with decades of experience crafting motorcycle boots and ski boots for Olympic athletes under his belt, and he draws on this experience, emerging from his workshop with the first pair of cycling shoes to feature adjustable cleat position. It’s the dawn of the modern cycling shoe era, and SIDI was there first. That adjustable cleat design was quickly copied by every other shoemaker in cycling, establishing a trend that continues to this day. SIDI innovates. Others copy. And in this way, the design of the modern cycling shoe evolves.

1960

Dino SIgnori establishes his workshop in Maser, Italy, and names it using the first two letters of his last and first names: SiDi.

1966

Mr. Dino creates the firstever monofilament line closure for shoes. He uses it on ski boots for Italian Olympic Champion Marielle Vautcel.

1973

SIDI creates the first cycling shoe with adjustable cleat position.

1979

SIDI introduces the cycling world to nylon soles.

1983

The first Velcro® strap closure debuts on a cycling shoe. It’s a SIDI.

1985

SIDI invents the first dedicated MTB shoe.

1988

22 years after inventing the monofilament line shoe closure with a rotary buckle, Mr. Dino patents it for cycling shoes. The patent shows rotary buckles located at the heel, as well as on the instep, with three different line routings: tightening across the instep, across the forefoot, and around the heel.

1989

SIDI debuts the first ratcheting buckle closure on a cycling shoe.

1993

SIDI is first to produce a cycling shoe with a monofilament line buckle.

1999

The SRS MTB sole with replaceable lugs debuts.

2012

SIDI develops the Tecno 3 buckle, with incremental two-way ratcheting micro-adjustment and an exceptionally supple, braided synthetic line that provides even pressure across the closure.

Tecno 3 Buckle In 1966 Mr. Dino creates the first ever monofilament line closure system with a rotor buckle for use on the ski boots of the Italian Olympic Champion Marielle Vautcel. In 1988, 22 years after inventing the monofilament line closure

system with a rotor buckle, Mr. Dino patents it for use in a cycling shoe.

The patent covers a closure placed on the heel as well as on the instep. Three adjustments are shown: tightening across the instep, across the forefoot, and around the heel. The latest version of that system, SIDI’s NEW Tecno 3 buckles, adjust fit across the forefoot and the toe of the shoe. The precision ratchet closure mechanism is easily adjusted using two buttons that can be pressed to incrementally loosen the buckle, one ratchet tooth at a time. Lift and turn the center buckle to tighten the shoe. To open completely, push on both buttons while pulling on the soft instep closure system. SIDI’s famously reliable and replaceable closures are improved by an ALL NEW proprietary SIDI Wire material, an extremely supple braided synthetic material that’s very low friction, for completely nonbinding action and extremely even pressure distribution across the closure. Like most SIDI small parts, the Tecno 3 Buckle is serviceable and replaceable.

Adjustable Heel Security System (HSS)

The Adjustable HSS, introduced in 2006, reinforces the top of the heel cup and adjusts to securely close around the heel just above the calcaneus (heel bone), eliminating power-robbing heel lift during the pedal stroke. Hydro GTX employs a four-layer upper for optimal durability, weatherproofing and winter comfort. Winter Tip For optimal comfort and performance the wide neoprene-and-Velcro® strap must be snug around the ankle, with tights or rain pants tucked around the outside of the boot. The Gore-Tex® bootie is completely waterproof, so if water gets into the shoes—either from a loosely secured ankle cuff, or it’s wicked in by tights or rain pants tucked into the bootie—that water remains trapped inside the shoe. In that event your feet will probably stay warm, but they’ll be wet for the duration of the ride.

Caliper Buckle By 1988, clipless road pedals had become the norm, and this presented a new problem— shoe closures were put under tremendous strain, as a pedal stroke’s upward pull had to be entirely absorbed by the shoe without the additional support of a toe strap. Dino Signori’s solution was as revolutionary as it was genius: In 1989, he introduced the first ratcheting buckle closure for cycling shoes, combining the robust holding power and on-the-fly adjustability of toe straps with the strength to withstand the powerful, repetitive pedal stroke of professional racers. It was the SIDI Micro Lock, the first micro-ratcheting buckle. The current Caliper Buckle is the latest incarnation of SIDI’s famed ratcheting shoe closure. It ratchets in both directions, allowing for precise, incremental tightening and loosening of the closure, for easy on-thefly microadjustment. For optimal comfort and performance the wide neoprene-and-Velcro® strap must be snug around the ankle, with tights or rain pants tucked around the outside of the boot. ELEVEN Millennium 3 The Eleven Carbon/Composite Sole is engineered for highperformance, high-mileage cyclists, with stiffness for power transfer and some controlled flex in the toe area that biomechanically relieves stress in the plantar tendon. This makes it ideal for triathlon as it helps promote circulation and isn’t as punishing on the foot, leaving you more for the run. The Eleven Carbon/Composite Sole is extremely stiff. In SIDI’s rigidity test, in which a 50 kg (110 lb) weight is suspended from one end of the sole, it deflected only 2.4 mm—54% stiffer than the Millennium 3 sole’s 3.7 mm deflection. The Eleven Carbon/Composite Sole is constructed from layered 3k weave carbon fiber and injected carbon fiber in a matrix of Nylon 12, a mechanically stable material that is completely non-absorbent to water, so it won’t change rigidity from exposure to heat, humidity or from aging. It is an exceptionally light, stiff, durable sole. An anti-slip insert in the toe and replaceable polyurethane heel pad help get you navigate through transitions. The Eleven Carbon/Composite Sole uses a standard 3-hole drilling pattern for compatibility with the best pedal systems available, and includes a printed 10 mm lateral and fore/aft cleat alignment scale on the sole as well as the Look Memory Eyelet for easy cleat alignment and replacement. Drako Carbon SRS Sole In 1999, SIDI revolutionized mountain bike shoe design with the Sole Replacement System (SRS), allowing mountain bikers to replace the most wear-prone part of the shoe—the sole. The NEW Drako Carbon SRS Sole takes comfort and efficiency one step further by dramatically reducing weight (overall shoe weight savings of 100 grams per pair) without sacrificing performance. The Drako Carbon SRS Sole is a pure carbon sole with SIDI’s replaceable tread blocks in the toe and heel. The carbon lay-up provides a slight amount of flex in the toe for a smoother, more natural running gait without compromising the shoe’s excellent stiffness and power transfer while pedaling. As it does in the Vent Carbon and other SIDI soles, this small amount of engineered flex also improves pedaling comfort and biomechanical efficiency by relieving plantar tendon strain. The sole is engineered for the high-performance, high-mileage cyclist who requires a sole that is rigid but does not compromise the foot’s blood circulation, guaranteeing excellent comfort and great power transfer. The Dragon SRS Sole tread are easily removable and replaceable. The Dragon SRS Sole® is toe spike compatible. * Most Dual-Retention Bar type MTB Pedals (such as Crank Brothers and LOOK) recommend using a reinforcement plate between the cleat and the shoe in order to prevent damage to the sole. The Drako cleat wear plate can be replaced in case of damage from the pedal system, so a reinforcement plate is optional.

Sole Replacement System (SRS) Sole Replacement System (SRS) In 1999, SIDI revolutionized mountain bike shoe design with the Sole Replacement System (SRS), allowing mountain bikers to replace the most wear-heavy part of the shoe—the sole. Today, versions of the SRS sole are found on the Drako and the Spider. Since the tread is replaceable, SIDI can use an aggressive, softer durometer in the tread for increased traction in slippery conditions. Like most SIDI small parts, the SRS tread panels and screws are available as spare parts. The SRS sole on the Spider models features a more generously sized polyurethane antislip insert beneath the instep, which helps during less-than-perfect cyclocross remounts, making it ideal for cyclocross racers. For 2013, the Spider SRS sole is produced in a firmer durometer than previous years to increase tread life for cyclecross racers and MTBers in “push” situations. Every SIDI shoe (except triathlon models) from 2002 onward is stamped with its size and last type (Mega, Narrow or Women’s), usually on the tongue. For example, a size 40.5 Woman’s model would be marked “40.5 W,” the W indicating Women’s model (older shoes may use an L, for Ladies). An M indicates Mega, an S (which stands for “slim”) indicates Narrow. Size marking on the sole does not properly identify size, as it only indicates the nearest whole size and does not identify the last used (a sole marked “42,” for instance, could be a straight size 42, a 42.5 women’s, 42 or 42.5 Mega or Narrow).

Fitting Sidi Shoes Shoe fitting is best conducted at the end of the day, as feet swell throughout the day.

• Length and width of feet should be measured, while standing, and customers should be open-minded about the results. Measure both feet—most people have one foot larger than the other—and size for the larger-size foot. • Customers switching to SIDI, or from SIDIs more than 5 years old, may not wear the size they think (this is especially true for women’s shoes). • All SIDIs, with the exception of winter shoes, are built on the same last, but different models may not fit identically due to differences in patterns and materials (Wire has a narrower, lower-volume fit than Genius 6.6, for example)— so bear this in mind when switching between different SIDI models.

• In many instances, customers with wider feet may be using regular-width shoes that are too long in order to get a wide-enough shoe. Switching to a Mega model in the correct length will improve fit and performance dramatically. • Customers should be fitted wearing the same type of socks they ride in, and any orthotics they typically employ. • Have customers spend enough time in the shoes for the Lorica to warm up and conform to their feet (see Lorica, page 21). • Properly center the Soft Instep Closure System over the instep, and adjust the heel retention device, on those shoes so equipped. • It’s a good idea to try a half size up and down, for comparison. If caught between sizes, it helps to remind customers that feet typically swell while riding.

SIDI SHOE SIZING: STANDARD, MEGA AND NARROW

• Standard-size SIDIs are C to E width. • Mega lasts are EE to EEE width*, 4 mm wider across the ball of the foot—with more volume, a high instep and wider heel cup. • Narrow models are considered B to C width. * Some cyclists, who may not have exceptionally wide feet but use high-volume orthotics and/or have very high insteps, will be more comfortable in a Mega shoe.

SIDI HALF SIZES SIDI shoes employ a very conforming “pro fit,” for optimized comfort and pedaling efficiency. Full sizes step up 6 mm (.23 inches) in length, which is a big jump. SIDI’s commitment to the availability of half sizes, built on lasts 3 mm longer and with proportionate volume, is a tremendous sizing advantage that helps achieve that perfect pro fit.

HIGH INSTEPS, LOW ARCHES AND SIDI’S SOFT INSTEP CLOSURE SYSTEM SIDI’s Soft Instep Closure System provides extra sizing latitude, accommodating high insteps and low arches. The crank arm-side anchor point of SIDI’s Soft Instep Closure System should be adjusted to center the EVA pad over the instep. Pull the Soft Instep Closure System slightly away from the shoe to disengage the ratchet teeth on the anchor’s underside while repositioning the pad (you may need to firmly tug back and forth, or wiggle it side to side, while pushing firmly). Trim any excess strap extending towards the crank arm side of the shoe.

In rare cases, people with larger feet or very high insteps (usually larger than a size-50 Mega) may need the High Instep Adapter strap extender.
