2011 MODEL YEAR CATALOG

Welcome to Cervélo 2011

Cervélo will be embarking on an an exciting new path for 2011. Thanks to the efforts at the Project California facility, the new R-series offers thrilling new models. From the “world record” 675g R5ca frame to the feathery R5 and the completely revamped R3, a new standard has been set in bike engineering. Technologies such as BBright ensure great stiffness and comfort at a remarkably low weight. As you have come to expect from Cervélo, experiencing the R-series is not limited to fly-weights only - there are no weight limits for our models, not even for that 675g R5ca frame! Aside from new models, we are planning many other things for 2011, as we celebrate our 15th Anniversary. We hope to see you at one of our events and in the meantime, ride safely!

Project California

Project California is the facility that drives all of Cervélo’s research and development on all things carbon, from materials to lay-up and from production technology to finish treatments. In early 2010, Cervélo unveiled the R5ca, produced at the Project California facility. At 675g, it is the world’s lightest pro frame and represents a combination of everything we’ve learned so far at the facility. However, Project California is much more than just a frame. Knowledge driven, not product driven We set up the Project California facility in late 2007 to expand and enhance our capabilities in the design and manufacturing of complex carbon structures, predominantly frames. The facility enables us to proof out new production techniques, build and test prototypes and refine lay-up designs – all in one location. The benefits include substantially reduced development time, more opportunities for product experimentation and better protection for our intellectual property. Lessons learned benefit entire model line The insights we gain at Project California are then incorporated into all our models. Whether it is the Squoval™ shape of the R3 toptube, the Smartwall™ for Carbon lay-up of the S2 downtube or the construction method of the P4, they all link back to Project California. Better testing Lab testing is indispensible to determine the effectiveness of concepts. Using a “strain gauge bike” that measures the load and flex in various areas of the bike when ridden, Cervélo discovered that the standard industry tests make incorrect assumptions about where each tube on a bike frame carries the most load during certain ride conditions. We used this data to develop new tests that better reflect real life conditions. This ensures that we avoid the problem where frames are optimized to win tests, but fail to win the affection of actual riders. In turn, the data from the strain gauge bike – in combination with new, proprietary lay-up design & ply analysis software – has also helped Cervélo to improve our design process and production techniques. Bikes for women – and why changing geometry doesn’t make sense

Cervélo and women For many years, we’ve been asked: “Other brands offer dozens of bikes specifically for women and you have none – does that mean Cervélo bikes only fit men?” Before we go into more detail, let’s get one thing straight: ALL our bikes are ideally suited for women. Female riders have won national and world championships, Olympic gold, all the major classics and grand tours for women, as well as the Hawaii Ironman – all on Cervélo bikes. These achievements would not have been possible if our product did not fit female athletes perfectly. Some might label our geometries “male version”, but in fact they have no gender at all. Marketing Myths “Women have proportionally longer legs than men and therefore need different geometries” – that’s the statement most commonly used to justify women’s specific geometries. The only problem is, that’s not true. Analyzing anthropometric studies and crunching the numbers, the conclusion was a rather simple one: men and women aren’t actually dramatically different. Yes, on average women are statistically shorter than men. But no, small women are not proportionally different from small men. And likewise, tall women do not have much different body proportions than tall men. This is what the numbers clearly say. You’re wondering why there are still gender-specific bikes on the market? Sometimes stereotypes are easier to grasp than science. However, it’s a basic belief at Cervélo to challenge stereotypes. That’s exactly what we‘ve done again. Even the big proponents of women’s specific geometry are quietly agreeing - many are now offering “advanced women’s geometries”, which miracle of miracles, is identical to their “men’s geometry”.

Women’s component pack Consequently, rather than changing our geometries, we now offer to change the components: For all our 2011 Model Year road bikes, there is a women’s component package available – if you prefer. This package comprises a female-specific saddle and, for most frame sizes, also a narrower handlebar. It is available on any new Cervélo or to retrofit your current bike - Cervélo or otherwise. By the way, all of our road bikes are equipped with reach adjustable levers, so that people with smaller hands (men and women alike!) can brake more safely. Why is the component pack available only for road bikes? On triathlon/time trial bikes, the shoulder width affects the elbow pad width, which is adjustable already. To find out more about Cervélo products for women go to www.cervelo.com/women.

Geometry vs. Components Because male and female bodies are not significantly different in their dimensions, we concluded that our frame geometries and our approach to sizing (stack & reach) works for both genders alike. After all, that’s also the feedback we’re getting from our female customers, and from both our male and female riders of Cervélo TestTeam and the triathletes of TeamTBB. After having examined our frames – what about the components? Well, they actually matter more. The saddle most often needs to be gender specific. But our data analysis pointed out another interesting fact: The main significant gender-specific difference for body proportions is shoulder-width. Mid-sized and taller women often prefer narrower handlebars than men of equal height.

BBright - Frequently Asked Questions

Asymmetrically widened bottom bracket shell for more stiffness at a lower weight

Q. What is the difference between BBright™ and BB30™? A. BBright™ is the only BB standard that allows oversized BB spindle (30mm diameter) and oversized frame tubes (11mm wider). This is the optimum combination of dimensions for the best structural efficiency of both crank and frame. For the crank, BBright™ is the same as BB30, with the addition of 11mm on the left side of the spindle, and the left crank is straighter, similar to existing arms for external bearing cranks. For the frame, the BB shell is 11mm wider on the left side. This leaves the Q-factor or pedal stance width unchanged, but provides the frame designer with 11mm more room to increase frame tube widths and thus structural efficiency. BBright doesn’t increase width on the right side because that space is used for the chain rings; extending the BB shell on the right provides no structural benefit as it “hollows out” the crank spider. Q. What is the difference between BBright™ and a standard BB? A. BBright™ uses a 79mm wide BB shell, while standard is 68 (or 70) mm wide. Compared to external bearing BBs (Hollowtech II, MegaExo, GXP, Ultratorque, etc.), BBright™ keeps the left bearing about where it is in those systems, but replaces the aluminum cup with the extended BB shell for more stiffness. Q. Is the BBright™ Q-factor different from normal cranks? A. No. The Q-factor (pedal stance width) is the same as normal cranks. Q. Which manufacturers produce cranks specifically for BBright™? A. Campagnolo, FSA, Rotor, SRAM, with more to follow Q. Will Shimano cranks fit in a BBright™ frame? A. Yes. An adaptor is available to fit Shimano cranks with external bearings into BBright™ frames. Q. Will older cranks fit in a BBright™ frame? A. Yes. External-bearing crank designs such as Hollowtech II, MegaExo, GXP, Ultratorque, etc. fit with the appropriate BB bearing kit. Square taper spindles and other 68mm-only BBs (ISIS) do not fit. Q. Where can I order spare parts? A. Crank spares are available through the usual channels (distributor & local bike shop). BBright™ frames with direct-fit bearings (R5ca) use standard BB30 bearings. BBright™ frames with bearings in PressFit30 cups use SRAM’s PressFit30 bottom brackets. SRAM provides PressFit30 BBs in various widths, including 79mm; PressFit30 BBs in different widths will also work – the only difference is the length of the internal seal. If it’s too short the seal doesn’t close; if it’s too long you can trim it shorter; either way works, but expect decreased bearing life. Q. What is the life time of a bearing? A. BBright’s PressFit30 bottom bracket houses the bearings in an engineered plastic cup, which self-aligns to a degree even in a poorly aligned frame. Therefore bearing life is about the same as a well-aligned BB30 bearing, and better than a poorly aligned BB30 bearing. Note: Trademarks used here are for descriptive purposes only and remain the property of their respective trademark holders.

Wider BB shell allows for a wider nondrive chainstay, a major contributor to a more efficient power transfer

No chainrings on the non-drive side, so more space to widen the BB shell BBright uses that space

The extra width of the BB shell allows for a wider downtube on the non-drive side. This increases system stiffness, while the resulting optimized carbon layup reduces system weight

R5ca new Technical Benefit

Rider Experience

Made at the Project California facility Manufactured by our engineers at the Project California facility, the R5ca frames benefit from a level of expertise not previously found in any bicycle frame. The 675g frame weight is just a small indication of the truly amazing nature of this frame.

Our test riders have had a tough time describing the experience of riding this frame, but its lightness combined with its stiffness is something to be experienced. As production of the R5ca is very limited, we also offer the R5 with similar qualities.

BBright Oversized axle & wider BB shell on the non-drive side (where there is space) provides an asymmetric, stiffer, lighter BB system.

Higher performance as higher stiffness creates better power transfer and better cornering while lower weight helps with climbing and acceleration.

Tapered steerer tube 1 3/8” lower diameter is the “sweet spot” for structural strength, lateral stiffness and impact energy absorption to optimize a light, stiff (but not too stiff) front end

Higher performance as higher stiffness helps cornering & climbing, lower weight helps with climbing & acceleration while higher impact energy absorption makes it bomb-proof.

Squoval™ tubing A square shape put lots of material far away from the center plane of the frame to create more lateral stiffness. The slight ovalization makes the shape extremely resistant to denting. The resulting frame is very light, very stiff and very strong.

Higher performance as higher stiffness creates better power transfer and better cornering, lower weight helps with climbing and acceleration while higher strength makes it bomb-proof.

Offset seattube The seattube is moved backwards. This means that the setback is already in the frame and is not required in the seatpost. Thus the R5ca with a zero-offset seatpost creates the same position as a standard frame with an offset seatpost, but at a lower combined weight. Also available with women’s component pack.

Higher performance as lower weight aides climbing, acceleration and sprinting. It’s a small effect but at these weights, every little bit counts.

R5 new Technical Benefit

Rider Experience

Project California technology All lessons learned at the Project California facility are incorporated in the new R5 to create a sub-800g frame. But the weight doesn’t tell the whole story, new standards, new lay-ups and new production techniques combine for a completely new frame and riding experience.

A combination of lightness, stiffness and handling not before found in a bike frame.

Razor-thin seatstays The original Cervélo R3 was the first frame ever to incorporate ultra-thin seatstays. The new R series frames feature even smaller seatstay cross sections than before, further increasing the already legendary compliance for the rear wheel. Also available with women’s component pack.

Higher performance as lower weight results in better climbing and acceleration, while the vertical compliance assists in providing comfort.

Smartwall™ for Carbon Smartwall™ elaborates on the Squoval tubeshape. With the sides far away from the center plane more important, we concentrate more material there to increase the benefits. Strips of High and Ultra-high modulus carbon stiffen the sides of the main tubes to resist lateral bending. These strips are feathered in to properly transfer the loads from the joints into these tubes.

Higher performance as higher stiffness creates better power transfer and better cornering, lower weight helps with climbing and acceleration while higher strength makes it bomb-proof.

Special XS size Optimized fit for the smaller rider with 650c wheels to create zero toe overlap (no chance to touch the front wheel with your toes).

Also available with women’s component pack.

Comfort is improved by not having to worry about toe overlap every time you ride slowly or make tight turns. No compromises just because “standard” wheels are bigger than they should be for small bikes.

S Series

1. Reduced drag to save energy at the same speed 2. A low geometry to put yourself in a good aero tuck 3. Proper road bike performance, because an aero focus shouldn’t compromise lightness, drivetrain/torsional stiffness or comfort We achieve this through our TrueAero, Smartwall, Flexstays, …

TrueAero® tubeset Lower aerodynamic resistance: TrueAero® tube shapes are designed for the lowest drag at bicycle speeds.

Higher performance: Lower resistance means you need to generate fewer Watts for the same speed.

Razor-thin Aero seatstays Super-small cross-section for seatstays reduces weight and increases vertical compliance for the rear wheel. Their aero shape and the reduced frontal area also lower aerodynamic resistance.

Higher performance as lower weight results in better climbing and acceleration, while the lower drag saves you power in maintaining your speed. The vertical compliance assists in providing comfort.

Massive aero chainstays The chainstays appear big when looking from above, but what the airflow sees is a shape that is optimized to minimize turbulence and thus lower aerodynamic resistance.

Higher performance: Lower resistance means you need to generate fewer Watts for the same speed.

Stealth aero headtube Narrowing the section between the bearings reduces the frontal area and thereby the aerodynamic resistance (which is linearly related to the frontal area).

Higher performance as lower weight and higher stiffness aides climbing, acceleration and sprinting.

ICS3 With ICS3, Cervélo continues to lead the industry by adding toptube entry and an integrated trim adjuster to the system. New internals reduce the friction compared to ICS2, while the adjuster on the toptube allows on-the-fly fine-tuning of your shifting, a first for internal cable routing systems. Also available with women’s component pack.

Smoother shifting & better finetuning lead to less drivetrain friction and fewer lost Watts for the same speed.

TrueAero® tubeset Lower aerodynamic resistance: TrueAero® tube shapes are designed for the lowest drag at bicycle speeds.

Higher performance: Lower resistance means you need to generate fewer Watts for the same speed.

Smartwall® cross section Increased stiffness without added weight: Smartwall moves material from the top and bottom to the sides of the aero tubes to make them laterally stiffer.

Higher performance: A laterally stiffer frame means more efficient power transfer from pedal to rear wheel, and more predictable handling in corners.

Cervélo welding method Cervélo engineers developed this technique specifically for the P1 and S1 frames. Our double-pass smooth welding without filing or sanding creates the strongest possible joints.

Higher performance through extreme durability. Combining the material and the welding technique, the S1 is perfect for serious racers and those who don’t want any hassle with their frame – ever.

2-postion for road and TT/Tri geometry (optional) Two positions gives you a traditional road position or a steeper tt/ tri style position in one frame.

Higher performance and comfort in both road and tt/tri applications.

Internal CableStop (ICS) Internal cable routing reduces the aerodynamic drag of the bike. Rather than running complete housing through the frame (which creates additional friction between cable and housing and adds around 200g to the bike weight), ICS was the first system to acts as a cable stop where the cable enters the frame, allowing the cable to run inside the frame without any housing. Also available with women’s component pack.

Its lower aero drag leads to higher speeds with the same effort, its lower weight helps in climbing & acceleration and its reduction of cable housing creates smoother shifting.

Built to resist the extreme forces of the most powerful riders.

T1 The aluminum T1 is the newest member of CervÊlo’s track bikes and it is quickly changing perceptions of what a world class, UCI legal, race machine should cost. While over 500 grams lighter than the most well-known carbon track frames, its light weight is not at the expense of stiffness as its bottom bracket and torsional rigidity are matched by no other. Developed in collaboration with Magnus Backstedt.

Higher performance and comfort: Supported by your bone structure, you can ride in a fast and comfortable position for a long time, leaving your muscles to focus on pedaling.

Higher headtube Unless you have a low handlebar position, more headtube means fewer spacers are needed. Thus the frame is stiffer, more aero compared to a stack of round spacers.

Higher performance, comfort and beauty: Better aerodynamics means more speed, more headtube stiffness renders better handling and using fewer spacers looks better.

Constant width seattube cut-out Lower aerodynamic resistance: Tire width matches the preceding cut-out perfectly, avoiding turbulence when the air flows past. Sounds logical, yet rarely found on any TT/Tri bike – especially at this price.

Higher performance: Lower resistance means you need to generate fewer Watts for the same speed.
