Personal project My personal project is going to be based on something i have a personal interest in and it should be a subject that i know i can take further and use my graphic design skills to produce a product at the end. Firstly i am going to narrow down what interest of mine is good for this project.
I am becoming increasingly interested in the Rio 2016 olympics because the 2012 london olympics has just passed and i really enjoyed it. I was disappointed at londons attempt to make a olympic mascot so i thought i could take it apon my self to create an olympic mascot for Rio 2016. i think this subject would test my computer skills because i will be comparing my work to profetionals who have made mascots before. One of my favourite artists is Ed Sheeran and i have been looking at his album and i was disappointed with the cover because i really felt that it didnt portray Ed sheerans music at all. I feel i could make a album cover better than his one at the moment but it will be challenging because proffetionals would have made his cover My favourite TV chanel is BBC three, i feel because of the wide variety of TV programmes BBC three has to offer it would be a good company to make a website for, it also offers a BBC three +1 which allows me to have a wide range of web pages i could create.
Final decision Over all i think creating the Rio Olympic Mascots would be the best subject for me to work from because of the wide range of information i can work from since the 2012 olympics has just passed and i really enjoyed the olympics. I also feel it will allow me to use a wide range of skills (sketching, computer skills and painting) to create a final product.
Creation of the Rio 2016 Olympic Mascots By Kristy Barrett
My research
Through out the next few pages i am going to research into Rio De Janeiro so that i can get a feel for what the city is like. I am going to look at landmarks and things that are personal to the city of Rio so that i can then develop ideas for my mascot. I feel that i should look at aspects of the city that are personal to Rio because it is going to be the heart of the olympics in 2016 and the mascots should reflect that. I am also going to look at previouse mascots from past olympics so i can gather ideas as to what basics a mascot needs and also look at flaws in there designs so i can make my mascot the best it can be.
a bit about rio
Rio de Janeiro is an inspiring city, with its stunning tropical setting matched by its fun-loving residents, called Cariocas. Impossibly steep, ageworn granite peaks rise from the ocean between stretches of golden sand. Brazil has retained much of its distinguished historic character, with magnificent churches, palaces and mansions clustered in downtown Centro. Today, Rio is best known as one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations, particularly for its spectacular Carnival.
Rio’s citizens claim their identity with pride, they come from a diverse mix of cultures; European,African, Asian and indigenous peoples, forming a racial harmony unequalled in Latin America. The City of Rio de Janeiro has been chosen to hold the 2016 Olympic games.
Rio’s carnivals
The Carnival in Rio is a four day festival which takes place every year for fourty days before Easter (marking the start of Lent). The Carnival is the most popular celebration in Brazil and it is celebrated in all of Brazil’s cities. These celebrations attract thousands of people from all over the world. Carnival expresses the culture, history, music, and images of Brazil. The event and the parade which takes place in Rio de Janeiro is the most famous and richest Carnival in Brazil and, may be, in the whole world. A million tourists join
millions of Rio de Janeiro residents in the world’s most fantastic party spanning several days and nights. From the Friday before Ash Wednesday to the following Thursday, them whole city shuts down for a wild celebration. In a city riven by poverty, Carnival represents a moment of freedom and release, when the aspirations of cariocas can be expressed in music, dances and songs. The origin of the carnival lies in the ancient African and Portuguese traditions. The Samba is a unique Brazilian music and a dance form that was begun by the poor AfroBrazilians. It grew out
the Angolan word “samba”, which translates as pelvic movements and the African rite of reproduction, the samba is now incooporated with every carnival. The highlight of the Carnival is the Parade at Marques de Sapucai, or “Sambodromo”, where different Samba schools fight for the title of Carnival Champion.
Rio’s state flag
Overall, an eagle proper with open wings in the attitude of taking flight, representing strong, honest, and just government, carrying the message of confidence and hope too the most distant corners of the state. The shield is surrounded by a gold cord, symbolizing the unity of all Fluminenses [citizens of the state].
The outer part of the coat of arms represents the state’s agricultural richness, sugarcane (left) and coffee (right).
The coat of arms has the traditional oval form of shield symbolizing the Christian sentiments of the people of the state. Upper blue, representing the sky and symbolizing justice, truth, and loyalty. upper] blue, representing the sky and symbolizing justice, truth, and loyalty.

rio’s Cristo Redentor
Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer in english), is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro. The statue’s features are 30 metres, weight 700 tons. It is located at the peak of the 700 m Corcovado moun- tain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. The tallest of its kind in the world. A symbol of Christianity, the statue has become an icon of Rio and Brazil. When the decision to make such a statue was made. several designs were considered like a representation of the Christian cross, a statue
of Jesus with a globe in his hands, and a pedestal symbolizing the world. The statue of Christ the Redeemer with open arms was finally decided. As of 7 July 2007, Christ the Redeemer was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a list compiled by the Swiss-based The New Open World Corporation.
the amazon forest
The Amazon rainforest, also known as Amazonia, is one of the world's greatest natural resources. Because its vegetation continuously recycles carbon dioxide into oxygen, it has been described as the "Lungs of our Planet". About 20% of earth's oxygen is produced by the Amazon rainforest. The world’s largest tropical rainforest, Amazon covers more than half of Brazil and is home to the secound largest river in the world ‘‘the Amazon’. Today’s Amazon rainforest covers around 5.5 million square kilometres and sprawls
across nine countries. It is hugely biodiverse, with only 10% of the species known to science calculated to be found there. This rainforest has a huge amount of agricultural products but the main ones are, Sugarcane, Corn ,Potatoes, Cocoa, Peanuts and Cassava. brazil also has a rich source of natural resources a few of which are Gold, Platinum, Granite, Uranium and Gems.
Native Amazon Birds Cockatoos are recognisable by the showy crests and curved bills. Their plumage is generally less colourful than that of other parrots, being mainly white, grey or black and often with coloured features in the crest, cheeks or tail. Toucans are native to Southern Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean region. They generally live in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The colorful and large bill, which in some large species measures more than half the length of the body, is the hallmark of toucans. Macaws are small to large, long tailed and have large, dark (usually black) beaks, and relatively bare, light coloured, medial (facial patch) areas distinguish macaws. Sometimes the facial patch is smaller in some species, and limited to a yellow patch around the eyes and a second patch near the base of the beak in the members of the genus Anodorhynchus, or Hyacinth Macaw. A macaw’s facial feather pattern is as unique as a fingerprint

rio 2016 olympics
In 2016, the biggest sporting event on the planet takes place in South America for the first time in history, the city of Rio de Janeiro will be proud to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. There will be over 100 000 people directly involved in the organization, including 70 000 volunteers. They are expecting more than 10,500 athletes from some of 205 nations around the world, plus thousands of media professionals and tourists from all corners of the globe. Rio is considered the cultural center for Brazil, therefore, being the perfect place to host the Summer Olympics
in 2016. The history that surrounds the city is amazing and the four zones that will predominantly host the events are going to benefit a great deal. Barra, Copacabana, Maracana, and Deodoro will be used for different events. Every single one of these zones brings something different to the event and ensures that the Olympics will be magnificent.
2016 olympic logo The Rio Logo thier easygoing
design creates a real “we are the world” image of three bodies holding hands in a vibrant dance circle, which sends the really positive, unifying message to all competing nations. Colour choices were led by the Brazilian environment: "Yellow symbolises the sun and our warm, vivacious and happy nature. Blue expresses the fluidity of the water that surrounds Rio, and
way of life. Green represents thier forests and hope, a positive vision that inspires them to go even further." To all this is added a rather neat, abstract reference to a Rio landmark, Pão de Açúcar or Sugarloaf Mountainin english, the shape of which is mapped by the logo.

2012 olympics
By using interesting s h a p e s a n d angles, and bright vibrant colours the logo creates a sense of energy. The brand colours are a modern twist on the colours of the Olympic symbol. The colours are inspired by the world of media, communications and fashion. the addition of the buzz outline (seen here in yellow) adds to the feeling of energy. A special typeface was created for London 2012. It is used for all
communications and key messages. It is intended to convey energy and dynamism. The logo captures the spirit and energy of the London 2012 Games. The addition of the buzz outline (seen here in yellow) adds to the feeling of energy. Wenlock was named after the Shropshire town of Much Wenlock. It is thought that the Wenlock Games, founded around the mid 19th Century acted as a catalyst to the modern Olympic Games that we all know (and love?) Mandeville is named after the Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire
where in the 1940s, Dr Ludwig Guttmann established the Stoke Mandeville games at his Spinal unit at the hospital. From here it is said the foundations were laid for the modern Paralympic games.

Favourite mascots
I have chosen my two favourite mascots from previouse years, The Fuwa from the Beijing 2008 Olympics (Top image) and Olly, Syd and Millie from the Sydney Olympics in 2000 (bottom image). I like The Fuwa because they are all the same character just adjusted with differant symbols that relate to Biejing, they are fun and colourful and i can imgaion being able to make individual mascots for each fuwa so you can choose which Fuwa you want. I also really like Olly Syd and Millie, the first thing i like about them is that thier names have a meaning, Olly as in olym-
pics, Syd as in Sydney which is where the olympics is being held and lastly Millie as in Millenium because it was heald in 2000. I also like how they are a group of native animals.
Merchandise
Now after I have done my research on Rio, Brazil and the olympics i feel I have covered all of the suitible subjects to move forward and look into how I am going to merchandise my mascots, I am going to look at how I am going to promote my mascots and what kind of merchandise I would like to create.
mascot merchandise
The 2012 Mascot merchandise came in a variety of differant souvanier forms, each serving a purpose that suits the majority of the public. For example a phone case for the best selling phone in the world ‘the IPhone 4’ will appeal to the general public because the majority will have this phone. Items like mugs T-shirts and key rings also suite the general public as a cheaper option to some souveniers, then a smaller range of more expencive memorabilia such as collectable mascot models for the collecters of the public. There is
also a childs option to the merchandise such as sweets and soft toys to cover the rest of the public. All of this merchandise has an individual colour scheme and pattern so that the souveniers are easily recognised as London 2012 olympic Merchandise, the mascots are also generally holding the same position in all of the souveniers to give it a common code and convention.
analysis
When i’ve been looking at the merchandise for the mascots i have noticed that every item has a consistant look such as the colour scheme which in this case is blue purple and orange (orange being wenlock’s scheme and blue being mandaville’s then both sharing purple). The merchandise also follows the same pattern which consists of triangles and sharp edges and also matches the 2012 logo. From these aspects it makes it obviouse what brand the merchandise is before reading the lable. I want to create a theme for my Mascot merchandise
because i feel that it would help with advertising because when people see the theme colours or shapes they will instantly like it back to my mascots. Even though my mascots are going to be created to boost moral and add a playful side to the olympics I will still create them to be a brand so that I can use this brand to profit from them as well.
tally chart
I have created a tally chart of all of the differant merchandise that can be sold and I am asking 30 people from my college and a home to tick two items which appeal to them most, here are my findings. Key chain

From my tally chart it is clearly shown that Wrist bands, Soft toys and model memorabilia are the most popular and because this is the publics choice i will highly consider having these items as my merchandise.
2012 mascot posters The first thing i notice about the
posters is that the mascots are promonant on the page, they are the centre of attention and even though the back grounds are bright and stand out it doesnt draw your eye from the mascots it just compliments them. They both have thier trademark name below them and the Olympic logo in the top corner so that
Kristen acampora Kristen Acampora is a freelance illustrator who was raised in the quiet suburbs of Maryland, surrounded by woodland and an abundance of animals. She graduated with a BFA in illustration from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2012. I feel like Kristen Acampora is a good artist to look at because she has created a collection of four London 2012 posters which I have found inspiring. Acampora has combined Olympic sports
with Londons famous landmarks to create a poster using patterned prints. I could use this theme of work to create a poster for Rio 2016 by using there famous landmarks such as thier Christo redentor or suger loaf mountain.
Favourite poster
This is my favourite poster because I feel it really captures london by using a huge landmark to the city as a show jump. I also really like the contrasting block colours because it really makes the poster stand out, it also uses the colours from our british flag which gives it a more patriotic feel.
What I feel I can use from this poster is that its using famous landmarks and combining with an olympic sport and my mascots to create a poster. i also like the block colours because its a simple way to make a poster stand out. the only thing i will not take away from this poster is that it doesnt have any kind of branding like its doesnt have the name of the artist or a logo and i want mine to have these aspects.
findings
Firstly i feel i have collected enouph information about Rio De Jeneiro covering the main personal aspects of the city such as traditions, their flag and landmarks, all of this will help to make my mascot personal to Rio. I also stretched to looking at The Amazon in Brazil because that is such a famous landmark and i feel that just because the olympics is in Rio it doesnt mean i cannot also look at famous aspects of brazilbecause the olympics is in thier country. I’ve also covered merchandise of the 2012 olympics because i know that once ive created my mascots i also want to create merchandise. Covering this information allows me to develop ideas with ease because I am no longer uneducated about the city. I then looked at Rio’s logo for the 2016 Olympics, this allows me to get a feel for the way Rio wants to portray the olympicswhich is through unity and possitivity, which means i must make my mascots so they give off the same feeling. Looking at previous mascots helped me to understand that they are also used as fictional spokespeople for they’re country so they must represent they’re country, they also reflects a desired quality like ‘fighting spirit’ which i think is a moral boost. I now feel i must make sure my Mascot has all of these qualities.
Developing ideas
Now i have collected this information i can use it all to develop ideas for my mascot. I will start off by sketching and working out what kind of ideas work best for my mascot, I will also ask the public for another point of view. I will then get into using differant materials and colours to see what gives my mascot the possitive energy i needs.

Agricultural products
making mascots I have used ‘Indesign’ to create my agricultural mascots. My reason for using indesign is because I felt that it would be the best way to create them because og how clean and high quality the image is when doing so. I want my mascots to look proffetionalso this is deffinatly my preffered medium. this is the outline of my mascots that i have created, i used the pen tool to free draw them. next i am going to colour them in.
making mascots I have used the colour tool to fill in my characters, and then added a gradient to give them am more 3D effect.
final mascots I have now added sports wear to the mascots to make them look more like an ‘olmpic mascot’. I have added trainers to them all to give them a sports look, a gold medal to reprisent winning, the brazilian football kit and the Rio 2016 logo with a gym ribbon. i feel that all of these elements will make it obviouse that they are olympic mascot but i am not convinced that they will make good mascots because i feel that they’re not good enouph to be used.
the next step
Now after doing a variety of differant sketches and testing out making a mascot i am now deffinate that i want to make my bird mascots because i feel that they would look alot more friendly and relate much better to Rio than my food mascots.
creation I used the pen tool to draw a bird which I can then go on and edit them to make them individual like my sketch.
illustrator 1
I copied and pasted my original bird and edited it to make three individual birds, one now has a longer beak and a bib so that is ressembles a toucan and the other has feathers on its head to ressemble a cockatoo. i am now going to add colour so that they are bright and eye catching.
illustrator 2
I have now added colour to them and have used gradients to create a more 3D look instead of being just flat colours. I am now going to add olympic aspects to them because although they could be mascots like this, people probably wouldnt know what country they are supporting.

The Toucan in the middle has now got the Rio 2016 logo on its chest as i have seen a few mascots have this aspect and i think its a good feature to have because it shows that they are th official mascots of the 2016 olympics. I have also added the traditional Greek head dress because although this olympics is in Rio i think its important to remember where the olympics came from. The cockatoo has a blue ribbon around its chest with Rio De Jeniero on as seen in the Rio state flad and i have also turnt its head feathers into and

adjustments 1
I am pleased with what i have created so far but i feel that the paraquit looks more American than Brazilian, i want to change the colour to try and make it look more obviously brazilian.
adjustments 2
I have now changed the colour of the paraquit to a green colour because that is the main colour that the brazilian flag is. I have alsoadded the Globe on his chest which is the centre piece of the the Brazilian Flag. I am now much more pleased with this bird and feel like it looks likeits supporting brazil
Final mascots
These are my final mascots, I am happy with them and i am now going to go on to creating a poster and merchandise.

The next step
I want to create the olympic rings that my mascots will be carrying as i have shown in my previous sketches. I have then come up with the idea that they will be flying over the famous sugar loaf mountain. i am now going to create this poster idea and see what it looks like and make my desision whether i like it
OLympic rings
I have created rings as shown in my sketch, i have created them by using two rings that have made by using the circle tool and making the line thicker. to give it a 3d look i have copied and pasted it and made on of the circles a darker shade and placed it slightly behind it. I think this method gave the rings a good affect but i could make the rings interlink because when i went to rub out the sections this happened, so i am going to try a differant method.

OLympic rings i have now tried to create rings by drawing a cirle with a radial gradient to creat e the 3D look, i then placed a smaller circle in the middle and selected’divide objects below’ to give the circle a transparent middle.i much prefer this methodand i plan to use this in my final piece because i am able to rub them out and make the look interlinked, i also think it gives them a higher quality look.

poster idea’s i have thought about using an actual image of rio de jeniero because then i can show off Rio’s landscape but i feel that using this image focuses too much on the ‘christ the redeemer’ and i feel i need to use a picture which focuses more on the landscape because not every one is christian and it might offend.
poster idea’s
I have chosen this picture where chrit the redeemer is the centre of attention, I have also edited the colour to make it look more bright but after adding my mascots ive realised that they are not as visible and the center of attention as i’d like them to be so i am going to creat my poster on indesign so i can tailor the poster arounfd my mascots.
poster mock I have started off my poster by making sugar loaf mountain out of shapes that i created with the penb tool and then giving them a gradient. i then put a blue gradient on the page to create a sky and sea look, after creatng a small boat and then putting my Sugar Loaf mountain on and my mascots i straight away decided that i didnt like this design because it looked very 2D and simple, so i have now decidedthat i am going to try outsome other ideas.
.
poster idea’s
I have found this poster from the london olympics and decided that making one similar would be a really good ides because i want the iconic scenery of rio as my poster put an actual image is too muchso i think the scenery in siluet form would be really good. I am going to view rio from where my arrow is facing Christ the redeemer.
.
skyline I have created the skyline by making the building with a square tool and then free hand drawing the sugar loaf mountain and Christ the Redeemer with the pen tool and then giving them all a gradient to give the skyline a 3D look.
.
poster colours
I have now placed my mascoted in place and i am now playing around with gradients to give a sky and sea affect . I have chosen the bottom right image because i feel that the blue is a bright but calm which is what i want to portray
. .
poster editing .
I have taken the skyline down so that there is more room for my mascots because that is what i want the main focus to be on and i felt like there was too much sea.
SUn Rise
I want to brighten up the page so i have decided that i am going to make the sun peeping out from behine y skyline to illuminate my poster because i think at the moment its looking very dull. I created the sun by using a radial gradient and the making the rays i used a transparent gradient to give it a more subtle look. Over all I am very pleased with how it turn out. I also think that having a sun rise is symbolic for the start of a new day, just like its the start of there olympics.
cloud creation
I wanted to create clouds to have a more sky like scenery, i wanted them to be white and fluffy not dark and heavy because i want the poster to look light, bright and happy, not miserable and dark. i started off by making a white circle and giving it a radial gradient with removing the ouer colour and making it tramsparent to give it a faded look. I then coppied and pasted it and made it smaller and lots of differant shaped and sized to create my cloud.
clouds I have now added clouds and i am very happy with the finished product.

ARC SHELL UPPER
FLAG
have decided that i want the text acroos the top like the London poster i was inspired by. I am now testing out differant shapes of text to see which one i feel suits the part. I feel that ‘Arc’ is the best because it cruves around the mascots creating the focus on them.

GILL SANS MT
Text font
Text colours I have now tried differant font colours but after all these edits i have decided i dont like this text because i feel like it looks too heavy and the colours dont match. I have now decided i am going to try out some differant texts.
official text
Because i didnt like any of the text I tried out I have decided that the text used in the official RIO 2016 logo would be a good idea because then it will look like a profettional piece of work. I created the text with the pen tool and incerted it with in the clods to make it look like the text if sitting amoungst the clouds. I am much happier with this text because i feel it looks more proffetional and suits the poster much better.
poster edits
I have decided that i feel the birds look wrong all face the way and they should look more symetrical because the poster is very symetrical as it is so i plat to change the birds for the poster.
mascot edits I have switched the direction of the right mascot and made the middle one more central, now they look more symetrical and look like they’re flying up wards instead of side ways.

t-shirt designs
I have taken the sky line and my mascots from my poster and placed it on a tshirt shape. I am now going yo create a background.
t-shirt designs Now I have put the background on i have decided that i do not like this idea because its not very tastful i fell, and i think no one would want to wear it, so i am now going to go on and create my other design.
Creation of t-shirt I have created the olympic torch to place in Christ the redeemers hand by using the pen tool. I then also made the flames/colours using the pentool and differant colour gradients.

wrist bands I have tried lots of differant wrist band designs because i want them to match my t-shirt i have used similar patterns and colours. my favourite is the middle left wrist band because i feel like the rest you cant see my mascots properly.
wrist band colours I thought i would try some differant colours to see if there is any opther colours that would look better but over all i prefer the blue colour and i am happy with that design and have decided that will be my finished product.
