HOW BEING A HPMKT STYLE

SPOTTER CHANGED DENISE

MCGAHA ' S CAREER

I can’t say enough about how important it is for you as a designer to attend High Point Market, effuses DLN Member Denise McGaha, who most recently launched her fabric collection with Vervain at the North Carolina fair.

I owe a lot of my product design success to the relationships I’ve made there. Nine years ago, Denise was in the first class of Style Spotters, designers handpicked by the market to select favorite debuts during market and amplify them over social media. In addition to sourcing product and discovering trends at Market, Denise says that one of the best benefits of having that role is that I was given the opportunity to make so many relationships with new manufacturers. Nearly a decade later, those relationships continue to bolster her growing career.

For more information about becoming a HPMKT Style Spotter, contact marketing@highpointmarket.org.

ELTE

ELTE ’ S NEWEST RUG COLLECTION BRIDGES MODERNIST DESIGN AND HERITAGE CRAFTSMANSHIP

In the mid 20th century, several influential modernist painters brought their creative eyes to rug design, conceiving and producing carpets in small French workshops. For the Tapis Français collection, distinguished Canada-based design retailer Elte rekindled this spirit, establishing a dialogue between contemporary art and historic weaving by marrying abstract designs with a 16th-century Persian knot technique rarely seen today. The perfect place to capture this intersection of styles and cultures?

MAISON & OBJET

MAISON & OBJET ’ S 2024 EDITION SPOTLIGHTS RETAIL, HOSPITALITY,

AND WELLNESS

This January marked the 30th year that the French design show convened thousands of brands at the Villepinte exhibition center outside Paris. Alongside all the brands showing at the fair (which included Partner Benjamin Moore, with a space designed by Member Peti Lau, shown at left), Maison&Objet presented activations within three themes.

What’s New? In Retail?

In a space designed by François Delclaux, the fair presented a program of workshops, conferences, and presentations on the evolving state of retail.

What’s New? In Design?

For its design trend space, M&O tapped designer Elisabeth Leriche to conceive an environment that reflects the idea of the home as both a refuge centered on wellness and a multifunctional space for work, relaxation, and entertaining.

Hospitality Lab

For this year’s hospitality-centric showspace, trend consulting agency Peclers Pari created three immersive “pods” that each reflect different popular elements in hospitality design today.

WHEN WINDOWS MAKE THE VIEW DURATHERM

For a project in Water Mill, New York, Kligerman Architecture + Design turned to Reilly, a division of Pella, to maximize views along a curved section of waterfront. Everything about the house is about the outdoors and light and views and air, says Tom. As such, he quips, we used pretty much every kind of window you can use in a house—from casement windows in the bathrooms to double-hung windows in bedrooms and picture windows with adjacent glass doors uniting interior living spaces with the landscape beyond. The star of this project is the water and the landscape around it, Tom says. And we did everything we could to look at it

TACONIC BUILDERS

FROM THE GROUND UP

Taconic Builders’s Six Part House, created with Young Projects architects and Coen + Partners landscape, is a case study of the group’s ground-up construction capabilities. Each of the home’s six gabled modules is strategically arranged to align the outer roof ridges, creating a visually cohesive flow of eaves, while dividing the house into six distinct, functional areas inside.

At the heart of the residence, the kitchen overlooks a triangular courtyard, providing a picturesque vista through the open porch that frames scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The living areas are interconnected, forming a large, unobstructed expanse that highlights elegant ceilings. The bedrooms offer views of the property’s mature, twisted trees, ensuring a sense of privacy.

MORE THAN FUNCTIONAL ELEMENTS, FIREPLACES ARE EXPRESSIONS OF PERSONAL STYLE

In New York City, where space is a premium and every detail matters, fireplaces stand as a timeless symbol of comfort and warmth. More than functional elements, fireplaces are expressions of personal style, and a key element to an inviting home. We love creating fireplaces that not only enhance the beauty of your residence, but to create a cherished focal point for generations to come. Rusk Renovations, Build Once.

NEW MOSAICS INSPIRED BY THE CITY OF LIGHT NEW RAVENNA

From the gothic windows of Notre Dame to the cupola of the Printemps department store, the wrought-iron silhouette of the Eiffel Tower and the vaulted arcades of the Places des Vosges, Paris is bursting with aesthetic inspiration.

These found motifs are the source for New Ravenna’s latest collection by Caroline Beaupère, a nine-design mosaic line dubbed Ville Lumière. Each design— rendered in natural stone, glass, and 24-carat gold—is a visual ode to a location in Beaupère’s native city…and an alluring way to bring a slice of Paris into any interior.

ABC STONE

A THREE-WAY COLLABORATION MAKES FOR A NEW VISION IN STONE

With Borrowed Earth Collaborative, DLN Member Ruchika Glover endeavors to celebrate nature through artful designs in stone. For the brand’s first-ever collaboration, Anthozoa, Borrowed Earth worked with ABC Stone and fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff to imagine a series of sculptural wall panels whose three-dimensional patterns invoke the sea creatures for which they are named. “The majority of Anthozoa live and move in colonies, so these pieces are an expression of what binds us together,” says Minkoff. “To remember our interconnectedness feels important in a time when humanity is divided in so many ways.”

LUTRON

The Alisse keypad is an elegant, balanced, and versatile wall control. Custom engraving personalizes the lighting experience in a way that is intuitive and simple for anyone to use. Uniting form and function, this beautiful moment at the wall-plate can be designed from a variety of hand-crafted finishes from the Lutron Signature Metal Collection to complement any interior style. Developed with design professionals in mind, the wall plate itself is engineered so that final decisions such as finish, button configurations, and engravings can be determined right up until installation. The Alisse keypad is designed with backlit illumination around each button. Depending on the selected finish, the ring can illuminate warmer (2700K) or cooler (4000K) to harmonize with the material aesthetic.

ARTISTIC TILE

TWO BECOME ONE

In her Duo collection for Artistic Tile, designer Alison Rose explores the beauty of dichotomy. Each of the collection’s tiles comprises two sides: Duo Dimensional, crafted with nautical-inspired ripples, and Duo Texture, etched with a graphic motif. With myriad pattern possibilities achieved through the arrangement of its two units, Duo presents a celebration of creativity through the balance of opposites. Alone, each side of Duo is beautifully crafted, but incomplete. The true form of Duo is only attained when the two are joined as one.

CLAUDIA ASHFAR ’ S DEKTON COLLECTION BRINGS INSTANT CHARACTER TO THE WALL

Drawing inspiration from contemporary Japanese design and wellness-centered minimalism, DLN Member Claudia Ashfar has conceived a new line of fluted wall panels for Dekton that infuse any space with character through subtle dimensionality. “Playing with texture is timeless, and it is so important in all materials,” says Claudia. The Ukiyo Collection—named for the Japanese word meaning “to live in the moment”—is meant to achieve a calm, relaxing space through texture and tone. Available in two groove sizes finished with a matte texture, these fluted wall tiles can be installed indoors or out, in a range of five existing Dekton colorways.

FORT STREET STUDIO

SHOWROOM MEETS ART SHOW

What do you do with the walls of an 8,500 square-foot studio space when your business is carpets?

If you’re Fort Street Studio founder Paul Melo, you turn it into an art exhibition. When Paul moved into the new space in New York’s Flatiron district, he knew he wanted to nod to its roots as an artist studio. “We always showed art with our carpets, but it was never for sale because it was either the founders’ works or items from their private collections,” he explains. Enter: William Li. The longtime design industry professional had recently launched an art advisory, dubbed Armature Projects. It proved the perfect partner for Fort Street Studio’s artistic endeavor. “Exhibiting works from the Armature Projects stable of artists enables us to enhance our space and add some context to our carpets, which are never installed alone in an empty room,” says Paul. The inaugural exhibition ran through the end of January; additional exhibitions will follow.

With its name taken from the Italian word for “touch,” Toccare emphasizes the elegant drape and substantial hand of natural fibers— all while delivering performance for indoor or outdoor use.

JAMB

ART DECO, REIMAGINED

As experts at making what’s old new again, Jamb has drawn from the distinctive elegance of Art Deco for its newest line of chimneypieces. With its rounded frieze set atop neoclassical columns, the Astor mantel evokes the indulgent glamor of the 1920s, a style duly reflected in the Florin sconces and Arne mirror that flank it. The Ducane chair, at left. meanwhile, takes its from from the ancient Greek Klismos chair, drawing the line of design history across epochs. Taken together, the group—all created with master craftspeople informed by their antique influences– is proof positive of the enduring style of great design.

POLTRONA FRAU

Inspired by the iconic Beatles song, Ludovica + Roberto Palomba’s latest design for Poltrona Frau reinterprets the time-honored Italian concept of the Roman triclinium, where people lay down, ate, talked, and lazed about. Equipped with storage units and shelves in addition to its soft, down cushions, the modular sofa system is an invitation to relax, a welcoming refuge whose saddle straps and recessed feet give it the appearance of floating in space.

SOANE BRITAIN

ADAM BRAY FOR SOANE BRITAIN

When visitors flocked to Soane’s new jewel box of a showroom on Madison Avenue this fall, they were not only introduced to the beloved British brand’s American debut, but to a delightful new suite of fabrics by interior decorator Adam Bray, which swathed nearly every surface in the New York location. Bray, a longtime friend of Soane founder Lulu Lytle, drew from midcentury motifs to create a collection of patterns that feel at once nostalgic and fresh. “I wanted something that would be graphic and strong but simple to use,” he explains of the collection, which ranges from small-scale florals to textural graphic patterns. Mission well accomplished.

CHILEWICH

BOTANIC MEMORIES

Motifs of the gardens creep indoors in Chilewich’s latest collection, which started with—what else?—a trip to the flower market. After selecting an array of florals, chilewich designers arranged them on paper at the studio and spray painted them. The ensuing patterns are derived from the silhouettes left over, which are rendered in the brand’s trademark weave in an assortment of colors that echo the negative process and recall the soft colors of a spring garden.

CLARENCE HOUSE REINTERPRETS ASIAN INSPIRATION CLARENCE HOUSE

With its newest line of fabrics, trimmings, and wallcoverings, dubbed “Indochine,” Clarence House looks to reinterpret the term as an ode to the centuries of design history derived from Asian and Indian culture. Through trade along the Silk road, Western cultures enjoyed access to a broad range of textile styles and techniques from the East, influences which continued to shape the path of design history. Indochine reflects this history in captivating patterns rendered in premium fibers using both traditional and modern techniques.

227 YEARS OF DESIGN HISTORY

PIERRE FREY

The history of French wallpaper studio Zuber is the history of wallpaper itself: Founded over 200 years ago in the town of Rixheim, it is the oldest wallcovering manufacturer in business today, continuing a long legacy of scenic block printing into a new era. Now, with its acquisition of Manufacture Zuber, French fabric house Pierre Frey is the prudent keeper of that patrimoine.

In 1804, Zuber debuted Pierre-Antoine Mongin’s Vues de la Suisse, the first ever scenic wallpaper, a version of which eventually ended up in the White House (under the guidance of Jacqueline Kennedy).

The Zuber archive is home to over 130,000 plates designed for block printing throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, pieces of design history that will be well-protected under Pierre Frey’s family-run business, where Zuber’s centuries of savoir-faire will be in good company with the likes of Boussac, Fadini Borghi, Le Manach, and Braquinié (which recently celebrated its bicentennial).

DECHERT

ARE YOU PROTECTED FROM PFAS ?

For decades, manufacturers have used polyfluorinata alkyl substances, or PFAs, in products ranging from textiles to paints and furniture, often for their water and stain resistance.

But research has shown that some PFAs persist in the environment, showing up in food and water supplies, as well as human blood, earning them the moniker “forever chemicals.”

In recent years, government regulators have begun clamping down on these substances, tort lawyers are suing companies for their use, and manufacturers are concerned about how to protect their consumers and themselves. As a premiere law firm that advises companies in legal, regulatory, and environmental risks, Dechert LLP has experts on hand to tackle anything PFA-related.
