A CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURE EVENT

EVENT GUIDE 2014 OCTOBER 9-17 DESIGNPHILADELPHIA.ORG

A CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURE EVENT

About DesignPhiladelphia: DesignPhiladelphia demonstrates, supports, and promotes the ability that design has to generate innovation, solve problems, enhance daily life, and influence both the perception and economics of the region. Through programming, DesignPhiladelphia consolidates the city’s design culture, bringing together innovative educators, established manufacturers, creative entrepreneurs, and retailers to brand Philadelphia as a 21st century city shaped by design, technology, and business.

About the Center for Architecture: The Center for Architecture performs the charitable and educational work of the Philadelphia chapter of the American Institute of Architects and serves as the physical home for the Chapter in Center City Philadelphia. The Center offers walking tours, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and children’s programming on architecture, urban planning, and design. The Center is also home to the AIA Bookstore and the Community Design Collaborative. For more information, visit: philadelphiacfa.org.

WELCOME TO DESIGNPHILADELPHIA 2014 Philadelphia is a design city – only ten years ago, we didn’t really know it. Truth be told, my colleagues and I had a hunch. Jamer Hunt, Joseph Dennis Kelly II, and I saw something here that no other city can brag about: seven separate higher education schools with world-class design departments—from architecture to interior design, urban planning to graphics, multi-media to fashion. We saw a unique Charter High School of Architecture and Design, galleries, shops, institutions and design firms, plus an influx of individual creatives. As a result, we co-founded DesignPhiladelphia in 2004 with the goal “to enlighten the public about the breadth and depth of visionary work taking place behind closed doors, to promote student retention, and foster business growth.” One City. 17 days. 63 events. That ‘s what the first DesignPhiladelphia poster read. We projected that, “as DesignPhiladelphia continues to develop and evolve, it creates new networks, stimulates growth in the creative sector; increases opportunities for trade, and enhances the reputation of Philadelphia as a place for creative excellence and innovation.” We didn’t know how right we would be. After decades of decline, Center City is growing again. Many of the city’s previously vacant, industrial spaces are alive with smallscale production and creative studios. Tech and design minds are converging in co-working spaces citywide, producing globally -recognized innovations in medicine, manufacturing, education, and the like. Today, DesignPhiladelphia is the oldest and largest festival of its kind in the United States, spanning a vast and vibrant regional footprint. It is also the signature event of the Center for Architecture—a perfect perch for projecting the importance of design to citizens near and far. Finally, our lead sponsor for 2014—the Mayor’s Fund—understands Philadelphia’s moxie well. We’re a design city, clear and simple.

Hilary Jay Founding Director, DesignPhiladelphia Director, Center for Architecture 1

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12 lecture/panel discussion

1:00pm-4:00pm

Extreme Collaborations in Medicine + Design Center for Architecture 1218 Arch Street Radical innovation depends upon entirely new ways of perceiving and interpreting the world around us. Therefore, it relies upon a diverse set of experts collaborating widely across disciplines. Nowhere is this more evident than in medicine; in the development of tangible products—such as drugs, devices, and software applications—but also intangibles, including clinical practice, treatment strategies, and protocols. Surprisingly, despite the obvious centrality of design in medicine, formal teaching of design thinking and practice to medical students is notably absent. To redress this, we have recently launched MEDstudio@JEFF at The Sidney Kimmel Medical College. The purpose of this lecture and panel discussion is to bring together experts who represent a new wave of extreme collaborators in medicine and design; including the epidemiologist, Dr. Raymond Neutra—son of famed architect Richard Neutra—whose life is embedded in both medicine and architecture. Moderated by: Peter Lloyd Jones, Ph.D., Director of MEDstudio@JEFF Free; advanced registration required. Presented by: MEDstudio@JEFF + The Evolve Foundation, Inc.

DesignPOP Book Launch Philadelphia Museum of Art, Van Pelt Auditorium 26th Street + The Ben Franklin Parkway Join Lisa S. Roberts, author of Antiques of the Future, as she presents a brief introduction to her new book DesignPOP, a cleverly photographed and beautifully created book that highlights game-changing product designs since the year 2000. Stay for a screening of an episode of her 2011 TV docu-drama “My Design Life,” featuring DesignPOP. Afterwards, join Lisa Roberts for a book signing in The Museum Store. DesignPOP is an unusual book among its genre. Housed in a neon pink-padded vinyl cover, it entertains with pithy product descriptions and engages the eye with original and humorously narrative photography. With approachable text, it appeals to a broad audience, not just the “in-the-know” design crowd. The book presents eighty-two innovative products that have pushed the boundaries of our expectations. Whether they pioneer the use of a new material or production process, take sustainability to the next level of design, or innovate in technology and functionality—each product is important in its own right. This witty yet insightful overview highlights why a design is good and why we should pay attention to it. What makes it stand out from its competition? How does it introduce a new idea; and ultimately, can it improve our lives? Whether it is a bladeless fan by James Dyson, the iPhone from Apple or the design for a pill bottle for Target, DesignPOP demonstrates how remarkable designs are popping up everywhere in our lives. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17 experience

1:00pm-5:00pm

Service Design Camp Impact Hub Philadelphia 1227 North 4th Street Come learn, play, and chat around all-things services. Service design is the activity of planning meaningful services for people— keeping in mind the user, experience, materials, infrastructure, and communication. If you are in the business of selling services (think education, healthcare, law, technology) or experiences (think retail, products, hospitality, transportation); if you love design and are curious about design thinking; if you are curious to learn and share new ways of improving the experience of our city, our neighborhoods, and our commerce—then this event is for you! This won’t be structured like a typical conference. In fact, it is structured as an “un-conference”! This means that you, the attendee—not a featured keynote speaker—get to lead the conversation, facilitate a workshop or share ideas around a topic of your choice relating to the design of services and experiences. This also means that you get to sit in on topics chosen by your peers. It’s fun, it’s crowd-sourced, and you will leave inspired! Food and refreshments provided courtesy of The Hub. $10.00 ticket required. Presented by: Philadelphia University – Strategic Design MBA Program + The Hub

In all of these roles, her advocacy for ethical, sustainable, human-centered design has been her guiding light. Known for decades as the editor-in-chief (and now publisher) of Metropolis Magazine, one of the most influential design magazines in the world, Szenasy has led the charge on issues ranging from universal design to emerging trends of consumer excess, from design for disassembly to the recovery of Lower Manhattan’s communities after 9/11, from design education to the social and environmental impacts of the buildings and products we manufacture. This event is part of a series of national conversations exploring issues of design advocacy and ethics and celebrating Szenasy, Design Advocate, a new title published by Metropolis Books and distributed by ARTBOOK | D.A.P. Lyn Godley at International House Philadelphia International House Philadelphia 3701 Chestnut Street International House Philadelphia presents fiber optic drawings by artist and lighting designer Lyn Godley that explore the relationship between art and technology. Merging digital printing, pastels, fiber optics and micro-computing, Godley creates layered imagery that play with themes of observation both by and of the viewer. Using the same light wavelengths as used in light therapy, and nature-based imagery used in art therapy, these pieces both calm and provoke the viewer. Hours: Monday through Sunday, from 9am–9pm. Free. Presented by: International House Philadelphia

Venturi, Scott Brown and Grandmother: Patterns for Production The Fabric Workshop + Museum 1214 Arch Street The Fabric Workshop + Museum (FWM) presents Venturi, Scott Brown and Grandmother: Patterns for Production. This exhibition illustrates the bold commitment to surface pattern and color that distinguished the designs of Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates for textiles, furniture, and decorative arts from the early 1970s to the early 1990s. Both on the walls of the Mt. Airy home shared by architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown and at FWM where the Grandmother, Notebook, and Flowers designs were developed, patterns were tested—some floral, some abstract, some combined—the designers skillfully manipulating effects of scale, rhythm, color, and association. These experiments mirrored the working process of Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates for their commercial clients, where the firm’s tendency to continuously modify and refine is recorded in the numerous prototypes and samples produced for every project. Curated by: Claudia Cueto, AIA, CuetoKEARNEYdesign Architects; Kathryn B. Hiesinger, Ph.D., The J. Mahlon Buck, Jr. Family Senior Curator, European Decorative Arts after 1700, Philadelphia Museum of Art; Marion Boulton Stroud, Founder and Artistic Director, The Fabric Workshop and Museum; and William Whitaker, Curator and Collections Manager, The Architectural Archives, University of Pennsylvania. Exhibition on view through November 9; with public reception on Thursday, October 2 from 6pm to 8pm. Hours: Monday-Friday, from10am–6pm and Saturday–Sunday, from 12pm–5pm. Free. Presented by: The Fabric Workshop + Museum Image: Venturi, Scott Brown Residence (alterations), Mt. Airy, Philadelphia. View of dining room with stenciled decoration (detail), 1990.
