In the latest Global Financial Centre Index, released in September 2017, London has extended it’s lead over New York to be crowned, yet again, the world’s leading financial centre.

The UK is open for business, welcoming of foreign investment and determined to remain the leading financial centre of the world.

We are still the gateway for trade with Europe from the rest of the world and a huge market in our own right.

We have some of the brightest and best human capital, a stable regulatory agenda, rule of law, excellent infrastructure and remain an attractive place to work and live.

Foreign companies have invested over £100bn into UK financial companies since 2007.

London alone is the globe’s largest international insurance market, the centre for commodities trading and the world’s biggest foreign exchange market.

ISLAMIC FINANCE WHY THE UK?

The UK is the leading Western Centre for Islamic Finance; the number of institutions based in London and throughout the country that offer Islamic finance services (more than 20 banks) is nearly double the number located in the US and far ahead of other Western countries. Institutions in London and the UK have been providing Islamic financial and related professional services for nearly 40 years.

Islamic finance plays a significant role in infrastructure development in the UK. This includes development finance for the Shard, Battersea Power Station regeneration and the Olympic Village. Current trends suggest that the role of Islamic finance in funding infrastructure development will continue to grow.

STRENGTHS OF UK IN ISLAMIC FINANCE

Capital markets: The UK issued a £200m sovereign Sukuk in 2014, the first Western government to do so. This expires in July 2019 and the Economic Secretary to the Treasury noted earlier this year the UK government’s intention to reissue, subject to further assessment. The London Stock Exchange is a key global venue for the issuance of sukuk. 65 Sukuk have been listed on the London Stock Exchange with a total value of $48bn.

Fund management: Net assets of Islamic funds in the UK amount to $728m.A total of seven Sharia compliant exchange traded funds (ETFs) are listed on the LSE. Banking: Currently five standalone Islamic banks in the UK, with a combined balance sheet of around £3.6bn. One retail (al Rayan Bank) and four largely wholesale (BLME, Gatehouse, QIB and ADIB)

ducation: The UK is the E leading centre of Islamic Finance education and training with four professional institutions and nearly 70 universities and business schools offering Islamic finance courses and degrees.

London is home to the world’s largest financial services sector with over 40,000 companies. Big banks and investment firms work alongside FinTech start-ups to create exciting new products and services. The London Stock Exchange plays an active role in ensuring London remains a financial powerhouse, working with many of Europe’s fastest growing FinTech companies to help scale up and grow in the UK.

The UK has built an enviable FinTech ecosystem that brings together the world’s biggest banks alongside start-ups, technology firms, policy makers, venture capitalists, accelerators and more.

London remains a magnet for local and international tech talent. The UK has a number of leading academic institutions that support the growth of the fintech sector and is a hub for world class talent.

SIZE OF THE SECTOR

Through Project Innovate, the FCA has created a fintech-friendly regulatory environment that supports and nurtures fintech companies to test their innovative products in a safe space. The FCA’s Regulatory Sandbox is one such aspect of this support.

FinTech’s have seen almost $1.5billion investment into Banking, Insurance, asset management each year since 2014 More than half of all European investment into FinTech goes through London

Over $1 billion (£825m) has been poured into the UK’s financial technology companies since the beginning of the year, with double the amount raised compared with the same period in 2016. The research also suggest that British companies are on course to raise more money in 2017 than the records set in 2015, with the data showing firms have already received more investment than the first three quarters of 2015.

L ondon continues to provide a major boost to the UK’s fintech sector, with London firms raising over $980m (£769.41m) and accounting for over 90 per cent of all investment into fintech companies across the UK in 2017.

London, which accounts for some 80% of UK based funds under management, is the leading international centre for fund management.

More than one-third of the investments managed in the UK - £2.6 trillion - comes from overseas clients, making the UK one of the world’s leading centres for international investment management.

London is the second largest global centre for hedge fund managers after New York. Its 17% global share of funds under management is more than double its share in the early 2000s.

Total assets under management grew significantly year-on-year, ending 2016 at a record £6.9 trillion.
