Summer is finally here and with warm days and longer evenings ahead, there’s no better time to dive into the rich offerings of the City. From sun drenched rooftops, refreshing beers and sensational sport, the Square Mile is the place to be.
The go-to destination this summer is the majestic Guildhall Yard, which is jam-packed with outdoor events. Explore the lives of Londoners past in outdoor exhibition The Londoners: Portraits of a Working City (p.18). For those keen to indulge in some historic Square Mile traditions, the Cart Marking Ceremony (p.23) sees the Lord Mayor and the Master Carman mark vehicles, old and new, with a red-hot iron. Fancy a pint? City Beer Fest (p.22) returns to the Yard for the beer enthusiasts keen to hear live music whilst they sip fine beverages. Food lovers are also taken care of with the
Yard Lunch Market (p.20), offering mouth-watering food delicacies from around the world to tease your taste buds. Over at the Barbican, budding architects can discover the wonders of Japanese design, in the Japanese House (p.5), or can explore the delights of the City’s “green” architecture on a Smart Green Spaces (p.29) walking tour.

The Great Parchment Book of the Honourable Irish Society Known as the Domesday Book of the Ulster Plantation, The Great Parchment Book was compiled in 1639 by the Irish Society. It documents the period immediately following James I’s deliberate settlement of English and Scottish Protestants in Ulster. Stored at Guildhall, it was totally damaged during a fire in 1786 but, following cutting edge conservation, it is on rare display. The First World War involved considerable sacrifice both on the front line, as well as at home. Guildhall Art Gallery’s new exhibition explores the personal stories of those involved as they grappled with separation from loved ones and kept the country moving. Immerse yourself in this multisensory journey that explores heritage, memory and loss. Featuring artist Jane Churchill’s installation Degrees of Separation, Echoes weaves in the work of 240 students as they explore with Jane the impact of the war in this exhibition that is part created museum, part archive of dreams.
Discover the 600 year history of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers’ and their presence at the forefront of printing and publishing. De Vroomen: Harmony in Colour and Form This special exhibition celebrates five decades of artistic collaboration between renowned husband and wife team, Dutch goldsmith Leo De Vroomen and British jewellery designer and artist Ginnie De Vroomen. Hand-drawn copy of the Bayeux Tapestry The London Metropolitan Archives is offering an exciting day of activities and crafts, featuring a display of archival material including the 22 metre hand drawn copy of the Bayeux Tapestry. Reward of merit Guildhall Library is displaying two miniature books bound in one volume: The history of Whittington and his Cat and The history of Goody Two Shoes. Dating from 1824, the book belonged to Londoner Lettia Elley, and was donated to the Library by Whittington collector Ellery Yale Wood. The rags to riches story of Dick was inspired by Mayor of London Richard Whittington, who was a major contributor to the founding of Guildhall Library in the 1420s. London’s history in art Guildhall Art Gallery is displaying two paintings that recount contrasting moments from London’s history. Paton and Wheatley’s 18th-century The Lord Mayor’s Procession by Water to Westminster is a traditional depiction of a City ceremony whilst Workman’s Chaos on London Bridge is a more tongue-in-cheek vision of traffic congestion on old London Bridge – an issue still familiar to many Londoners.
