The City of London is a distinct district within the capital. A series of statues of dragons (the symbol of the City) can be seen on the streets, marking out its boundaries. From Fleet Street in the west to Aldgate in the east, to Holborn and Barbican at its northern boundary and with the Thames marking its southern edge, the City is also known as the Square Mile. Its maze of alleyways and key thoroughfares ensure it’s anything but a simple square, while the combination of centuries old architecture and cutting edge modern design create a unique and fascinating environment to work and live in. The Romans founded Londinium here and it has been the focus for British commerce for over a thousand years. Rich in heritage, it is London’s historic heart, yet its diverse cultural offering enables the City to be a nurturing home for contemporary art and performance whilst remaining at the forefront of business innovation.
Sponsor’s Welcome The City of London might cover a relatively small area but it’s easy to get from station to office to sushi bar to office and home again without really getting the most out of what’s around you. Maximise your coffee break with a few minutes’ contemplation in a quiet City garden; gaze on artistic genius at a free art gallery in your lunch hour or catch up with colleagues in a different bar to the ‘usual’ at the end of a productive day. Grange Hotels has two key City locations – by St Paul’s and near the Tower of London (with a third hotel just east of the City). Our restaurants, bars, gym and spa facilities are open daily. In this guide we only have space for a few highlights across the City, but we hope they lead you to new, favourite places to eat, shop and relax throughout your working week. Plus, tempt you back to enjoy and share this unique square and its treasures along the way. Keep this guide handy for inspiration and in its pages, look for special recommendations from our project partners. The guide is also available in app form – The City of London Guide. Enjoy, Grange Hotels 3

Around 400,000 people come into the City to work every day and, like residents and visitors, rely on the services provided by the City of London Corporation. The City Corporation is a uniquely diverse organisation that not only provides services you would expect from a local authority but a host of specialist ones as well. These include the City’s own police force, five Thames bridges and sponsorship of several academy schools. It runs the food markets at Billingsgate, New Spitalfields and Smithfield, and is the Port Health Authority for the tidal Thames.
The City Corporation owns and manages the Barbican Centre, visitor attractions like Tower Bridge, Guildhall Art Gallery and several public and specialist libraries across the City. Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest are the most high profile of the 11,000 acres of space under its care across London. It also works in partnership with local communities to increase skills, employment and opportunities for all Londoners. The organisation supports and promotes London as a centre for business especially through the work of the Lord Mayor, who heads the City Corporation and acts as an international ambassador.

Getting Started
The City you work in is always changing. Look up, look around and check it out. ----------------------------------------------
The City Information Centre is so much more than a resource for visitors to the Square Mile. Open daily, with free wifi facilities and staff offering multilingual advice, it’s also a handy place to top up your Oyster card and buy theatre tickets (as well as fast-track tickets for London attractions). Why not get out and stretch your legs during your break? Many of the daytime and evening walking tours around the City start from here or you can pick up leaflets offering inspiration for self-guided exploration of the streets around you. If you’re planning to travel for work or pleasure, it’s worth remembering that the City Information Centre is a handy foreign exchange point too.

This pretty garden takes its name from the workers who came here from the nearby post office. Don’t miss George Frederic Watt’s 1900 Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice, a tribute to ordinary people who died saving the lives of others. Its tales of everyday bravery are as fascinating as they are touching.
Separated into three tiers, the garden’s wooden arbours, shaded seats and large lawn make it the ideal spot for a time-out. See sparrows, blue tits, greenfinches, and dunnocks here, as well as an ‘insect hotel’ – a special habitat created to keep the creepy crawlies happy.
