Clean City The City Corporation’s Cleansing Team provides a 24 hour, 365 day a year service to keep to the Square Mile clean. But over recent years the increase in people living, working, and visiting here has put additional pressure on the service which has had to adapt and innovate to maintain the high standards expected of a world class City. With this in mind the team will be implementing improvements over this year to manage these issues. You can help too by reporting any problem you see to the City either on the phone, through the website or using our Love the Square Mile app. Despite the extra pressure of ever growing demand, over the last four years Keep Britain Tidy has

Cleaner Air – raising awareness At the end of last year City residents took part in a project called ‘Cleaner Air Action Days’ going out and about in the City streets asking drivers to switch off their engines when parked. Along with City Corporation staff, and behaviour change Charity Global Action Plan, these ‘Air Quality Wardens’ engaged with 163 drivers and asked them to switch off their engine while parked. The aim of these awareness days – earlier in the year over 500 drivers were approached – is to talk to drivers and change their behaviour in the long term so, in future, they will automatically switch off their engines.
Unnecessary engine idling contributes to poor air quality, which in turn affects the health of everyone in the City. The vast majority of drivers are very supportive and are quick to turn off their engines when the health issues of poor air quality are explained to them. Tackling idling engines is one of the many measures the City Corporation is taking to improve air quality and raise awareness regarding air quality issues. Find out more about what the City is doing, and how you can reduce your own exposure to poor air quality on the City Corporation’s website.
YOU TOO CAN DO YOUR BIT If you have concerns about idling hotspots or if you would like to get involved with future Cleaner Air Action Days get in touch with the Pollution Team.

London Wall Place: a new public space Since the approval of the redevelopment of the St Alphage House site in 2011, the City of London Corporation has been working to improve the public realm around the new development, known as London Wall Place. The site is planned to be completed by May 2017 and will include significant enhancements to the streets and highwalks as well as new and improved publicly accessible open spaces around the development. Key changes include the widening of the footway along London Wall
and the redevelopment of St Alphage Garden. The design team is especially focusing on delivering significant improvements to the gardens by creating a greener and more accessible open space for workers, visitors and residents to enjoy. The City Corporation is planning to present the new design for public consultation before the end of spring 2016.

Fleet Street improvements The City of London is consulting on an updated public realm strategy for the Fleet Street area. The original Fleet Street Design Strategy, adopted in 2004, focussed on enhancements to the courts and lanes north of the main thoroughfare, many of which were successfully completed.
MORE INFORMATION lwppublicrealm@cityoflondon.gov.uk
The revised strategy, set in the context of growing numbers of pedestrians and cyclists in the area, proposes major improvements to the main Fleet Street/Ludgate Hill corridor, and other enhancements to the streets, courts and lanes to the south of Fleet Street.

TRADING STANDARDS
Don’t be taken for a ride by letting agents Rising house prices, particularly in and around London, continue to make it more difficult to get a foot on the housing ladder. This inevitably means that there is a massive demand to find accommodation to rent, and letting agents are normally the first port of call for many prospective tenants. Unfortunately, some letting agents seek to exploit the shortage of accommodation by charging extortionate fees and, in the worst
cases, taking money upfront for properties that may not even exist. Recently however, to protect prospective tenants, there have been some changes in the law. All those engaged in letting agency or property management work must now ensure their list of fees is clearly stated on business premises and online. The list must include VAT and give a description of what the fees are actually for. The use of the term “administration fee”, for instance, is no longer sufficient.
In addition, letting agents must make it clear, to prospective customers, that they belong to one of the three approved redress schemes. Anyone found to be not complying can be issued with a penalty of up to £5,000. Trading Standards is doing everything possible to work with businesses to bring them into compliance.
MORE INFORMATION 0345 404 0506
A display of the proposals will be available to view in Shoe Lane Library from late February for four weeks. The City Public Realm team will be on hand at selected dates and times to answer questions. Copies of the draft strategy document will also be available.

Spotting the signs of child exploitation 18 March marks National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day. It’s important we all know how to spot the signs of Child Sexual Exploitation and learn what we can do to help vulnerable members of our communities across the City. Child exploitation often happens between young people of a similar age, and involves boys as well as girls, being offered something in return for performing sexual acts. It could be alcohol, cigarettes, gifts, money, drugs, affection or even just somewhere to stay. There could be a link between this type of abuse and when a child goes missing from school or home. And it might not always be obvious what’s going on.

Making City parks smoke free As three of our parks with children’s play areas become smoke free, the City of London Corporation is encouraging more people to give up smoking and ‘stub it out’. Signs are being placed in children’s play areas in Tower Hill Gardens, West Smithfield Rotunda Gardens and Portsoken Street Garden asking people not to smoke in these areas. The idea is that smoke-free play areas will help reduce the risk for children of exposure to second hand
smoke, making it less likely for young people to start smoking in the first place. This joint initiative, between Public Health and Open Spaces, recognises that children have the right to a smoke-free environment whether they are at home, in cars or out and about in public spaces.

Confused about how to recycle? How to use your bins and bags The City of London provides clear recycling bags to all households. If you live in a property which has a bin-store, place your clear recycling bags into the recycling bin ready for collection. Do not place any other bags or items into the recycling bin. Items which cannot be recycled should be placed into black bags or shopping bags and put in your general waste bin. If your property does not have a bin store, we also provide you with In your clear recycling bags you can recycle: Food and drink cans Aerosols Foil trays Mixed glass Cartons Mixed paper Cardboard Household plastic packaging
white general waste bags for you to throw away items which can not be recycled. Once your general waste and recycling bags are full please tie and place on the street for collection between 6.30pm and 7.30pm, Monday - Saturday. Your bags will be collected shortly afterwards. This is to comply with Time Banding regulations. Do not place your bags on the street for collection on Sundays or Bank Holidays as there are no collections on these days. Please use only the clear recycling and white general waste bags we provide to you as using other bags may constitute a littering or fly-tipping offence for which a fine may be made.
Time Banding. What is it? Time Banding restricts the time when residential and commercial bagged and loose waste is on the street. This makes streets cleaner during the day, reduces the amount of litter and obstructions and provides a nicer environment for our residents, workers and visitors. Time Banding Regulations apply seven days of the week, between 8am – 6pm, 365 days of the year for both residential and commercial waste. No bags should be on the street during these times. Recycling textiles Every year in the UK an estimated 350,000 tonnes of used clothing ends up in the bin. In addition, the average UK household owns around £4,000 worth of clothes, 30% of which has not been worn for at least a year. This amounts to approximately £30bn of unused clothing. Throwing wearable clothing away is wasteful, while recycling clothes you no longer wear is kinder on the environment and you wardrobe! City residents can now recycle and reuse unwanted clothes, shoes and textiles by taking them to the new Salvation Army textile reuse points located in: Artizan Street Library Artizan Street, E1 7AF Guildhall Library Aldermanbury, EC2V 7HH Shoe Lane Library Little New Street, EC4A 3JR Walbrook Wharf City of London Offices, 79-83 Upper Thames Street, EC4R 3TD
If you live on one of the City estates, you will also find dedicated Salvation Army textile banks in the bin storage areas. Check with your Estate Office for details. Items placed in the textile reuse points also help raise money for the Salvation Army to support their welfare projects.
What can I recycle? Clothing and underwear, handbags, belts and shoes (please tie in pairs), towels, curtains, blankets and bed linens (sorry no duvets or pillows) All items should be placed in a bag before being placed in the textile reuse points.

Gang sentenced to more than 30 years Three men who were part of an organised criminal network were sentenced, last December, at the Old Bailey, for their involvement in several armed robberies across the country. Alex Parle, aged 22, was sentenced to ten years. Thomas O’Connor, aged 23, was sentenced to 12 and a half years while Conor Gartland, aged 18, was sentenced to eight years. The gang were investigated jointly by City of London, Metropolitan and Greater Manchester police forces after several robberies in London and Manchester between February 2014 and January 2015. This series of robberies included a jeweller on Liverpool Street where one of the men threatened a member of the public and a City of London police officer with a machete. In January 2015 officers were alerted to reports of a robbery taking place at the Carr Jewellers on Liverpool Street. The three men, riding two stolen mopeds stopped outside the jeweller. While two of them entered, breaking into two display cabinets with sledgehammers, and placing several designer watches worth £144,869 into a rucksack, Parle remained outside as the lookout.
As they were making their escape, an unmarked City of London Police car tried to block them by parking in front of the mopeds. This prevented Parle from jumping onto the back of one of the mopeds. He was grabbed by a member of the public, who was threatened with a machete. Parle was later arrested and evidence found at his home revealed a receipt for the purchase of two sledgehammers and a pair of gloves. Further police investigation revealed that O’Connor had been involved in other robberies in London and Manchester. Acting Detective Inspector Kelly Schonhage from the City of London Police said,“These men are part of a wider organised crime network who commit commercial robberies targeting money transfer shops and jewellers. The close working between all three police forces and a thorough investigation has led to these sentences. “I would like to thank the brave officer and member of the public who put themselves at risk to help catch one of the suspects during the robbery at Liverpool Street.”
Meet Ian Dyson QPM, new Commissioner of the City of London Police “The City of London is a special and unique place and being the Commissioner of the police force that protects it is both a privilege and a huge challenge. I took over as Commissioner in January after five years in the force, the last three as Assistant Commissioner. “This time has given me a thorough understanding of the people that live, work and visit the City and has enabled me to lead a team that will build on the reductions in crime and anti-social behaviour we have achieved over my time here. Crime in the Square Mile is low and the public’s confidence in the City of London Police, when measured
against other areas, is one of the highest in the country. “Fundamental to these achievements is the partnership we have with residents and our close work with the City Corporation. This unique cooperation enables us to protect the people, buildings and businesses of the Square Mile. “It is an exciting time in the City and I look forward to working with you all to ensure we continue to develop our service to meet residents’ demands in the coming years.“
Police seek witnesses to murder On 12 December the City of London Police charged Junior Olabisi Afolayan with the murder of Kabba Kamara. The charge relates to an incident which took place on Leadenhall Street on Sunday 6 December, when officers were called at 3.14am following reports of a man having been stabbed. Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and took Kabba Kamara, 23, to the Royal London Hospital suffering from stab wounds to the abdomen. He died shortly after. GUILDHALL ART GALLERY
Martin Parr 4 March - 31 July 2016
Martin Parr has been the City of London’s photographer-inresidence since 2013 and over the years, he has been granted unprecedented access to highprofile occasions where guests have included Her Majesty The Queen and dignitaries. 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and in the coming months you can enjoy a stunning array of cultural events commemorating his death, in the place where he lived and worked. The centerpiece of the celebrations, Son et Lumière, will take place in the distinctive surroundings of Guildhall Yard. These unique celebrations will bring you closer than ever to usually unseen insights into Shakespeare himself, along with fantastic modern interpretations in sound, light and performance. On 4 and 5 March, the historic façade of Guildhall will be illuminated with 3D projections and a special music composition by the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. The 20 minute, free-tovisit, spectacle will run on a loop where visitors can be awed by the
visual brilliance dramatising the Shakespeare legacy. 6.45pm start. The Heritage Gallery offers a rare opportunity to view Shakespeare’s signature on his mortgage deed, alongside Guildhall Library’s copy of the First Folio – considered one of the five best in the world.
Parr’s images offer a new perspective on the City of London and create a significant documentary record of its colour and character for years to come. This exhibition provides unprecedented access into the world of private ceremonies, ancient and modern traditions, processions, banquets, public
occasions and informal behindthe-scenes shots. Through his playful eye for detail and visual dynamism, Parr gives a human perspective on ceremony and those moments unseen to the general public, capturing what would otherwise go unnoticed. Following the exhibition, Guildhall Art Gallery will acquire 20 pieces for the contemporary permanent collection, adding Parr’s timely photographs alongside centuries of works that represent historic and present London. Admission: £5/£4 concession www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/ guildhallartgallery
