If you would like some expert advice

A huge thank you to everyone who responded to the City Streets survey earlier this year. We had nearly 2,000 responses and spoke to many more at drop-in sessions, and other events. Amongst other things, people told us that: n There is too much traffic on the City’s streets. Four out of five people said that this was an issue, causing problems with air quality and making the Square Mile a less pleasant place n While most people get around the Square Mile on foot, not enough space was allocated to people walking, especially at peak times and around rail and tube stations. n Cycling infrastructure needs to improve, but that there is too much conflict between people on bikes and people walking.

outcomes for the City Corporation’s long-term Transport Strategy. The Transport Strategy will set out how we will manage transport and streets to ensure that the Square Mile remains a great place to live, work, visit and invest. Once again, we would like to hear your views. Does the vision reflect how you would like to see the City’s streets develop? Do you think the outcomes will deliver the change that’s needed? Is there anything else that we should be considering at this stage? MORE INFORMATION and to complete the survey cityoflondon.gov.uk/ transportstrategy

No Plastic, please In April 2017 the Square Mile Challenge was launched with the aim of collecting and recycling half a million coffee cups in one month alone. The challenge was indeed successful. Not only have 4m coffee cups been collected and recycled across the City since, but it also helped raise awareness of reducing the amount of plastic we use – and waste – on a daily basis.

a significant increase in the number of drinking fountains in the Square Mile. In addition, ten new water bottle refill points will be installed in the City, in a bid to reduce the use of plastic bottles and encourage a refill culture. Others will also be placed in parks, retail squares, by the River Thames and near transport hubs, with exact locations decided after a public consultation.

This year, the challenge goes up a whole new level with the City Corporation unveiling the ambitious plan to cut down plastic consumption across the Square Mile. The idea is to encourage re-usable containers and raise awareness of the damage caused by plastic litter particularly along the City’s riverfront and bridges.

City’s pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants will also be encouraged to register as bottle refill stations and sign up to a pledge scheme to reduce their own use of single use plastics, like straws, bottles, and cups. The Plastic Free City initiative will also see the City Corporation lead by example by reducing the provision of single-use plastics across all buildings it owns.

Setting the vision for a Plastic Free City, this initiative will see

Barbican ends use of plastic straws The Barbican recently announced that it has joined the Evening Standard’s The Last Straw campaign and has withdrawn single-use plastic straws from its bars, cafes and restaurants. In previous years nearly 50,000 plastic straws had been given out to customers each year. However, as part of the Barbican’s commitment to reduce the centre’s environmental impact, only paper straws will be available to those who request them from now on. Sir Nicholas Kenyon, Managing Director of the Barbican, was quoted in a news piece in the Evening Standard about the initiative, saying “We are grateful to our catering partners for their support with this. We will go further in the coming months as we explore in our 2018 season, The Art of Change, the roles and responsibilities of citizens, artists

Bank on Safety It has been just over a year since the experimental safety scheme Bank on Safety was implemented. Early indicators are showing that the scheme has improved the safety at the junction and in the wider area. We received nearly 4,300 individual responses to the community and stakeholder consultation which is currently being reported to various City of London Committees. A final decision will be taken later this year by City of London Members on whether to keep the current experiment at Bank Junction. MORE INFORMATION cityoflondon.gov.uk/bankonsafety

Have your say on Saturday morning construction works The City Corporation is reviewing the existing ‘standard hours’ arrangements for Saturday mornings for construction-type activities. We are asking for comments as widely as possible so that our elected Members are aware of your views when considering this matter. The high level of development in the Square Mile, including major office redevelopments in the east and infrastructure projects, could have significant environmental impacts on occupiers of nearby premises. Protecting residents, City businesses and other noise sensitive premises (eg schools) from noise and vibration impacts of construction sites is a necessary part of ensuring the City is an excellent place to live, work, learn and to do business.

Saturday work for construction activity is considered the industry norm and has been accepted nationally. It helps in practical ways as, for example, fewer people and vehicles are on the street at weekends so there are less public safety implications with works, and it is easier to move large vehicles and loads on streets. Using the additional hours to carry out works speeds up the completion of projects and reduces the length of impact on neighbours. All views are welcome. It offers arresting juxtapositions of ruins, churches, medieval plot widths, grand commercial architecture and generous provision of green space, all within a tightly-defined biodiverse setting. Here, an extensive array of heritage assets illustrates nearly every period from the Roman to the present day. These include the Roman and medieval City wall and Aldersgate, the remains of the medieval Greyfriars precinct, the Victorian General Post Office buildings on King Edward Street, and an award-winning modern office development. The park itself lies at the heart of the area and was formed in 1875 by amalgamating three disused burial grounds. To the poignancy of their former use is added the Watts Memorial to Heroic SelfSacrifice, a significant and unusual commemoration of members of the public who lost their lives trying to save others. There are also

associations with more well-known figures, such as Sir Christopher Wren (architect of St Paul’s Cathedral), Rowland Hill (Victorian Post Office reformer) and John Wesley, the founder of Methodism with connections to Little Britain at the time of his conversion. Conservation area status helps to manage and promote the special interest of Postman’s Park so that the area can remain a key part of the City’s appeal to businesses, residents and visitors. Fibre To The (City) Premises Until recently broadband speeds in the City have been amongst the slowest in the UK, affecting small business tenants and residents who cannot afford dedicated fibre optic leased lines. This situation is about to change as Openreach is now seeking to roll out “Fibre To The Premises” to every building in the Square Mile at no cost to the landlord, offering faster speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second at affordable prices for businesses and residents. Openreach will use existing

ducting to access buildings, avoiding street works to install the new fibre infrastructure into basements. This work will require landlord consent in the form of wayleave and Openreach will need to undertake a quick building survey to establish how to connect to the building. Residents and business tenants interested in connecting to Fibre To The Premises should complete an expression of interest form which requests Openreach to undertake a building survey so that the Fibre To The Premises connection can be planned and completed.

To report a crime call 101, 999 in an emergency only www.cityoflondon.police.uk

Please report suspicious activity The City of London Police is urging the public to help them tackle terrorism and save lives by reporting suspicious behaviour, and activity, following the launch of the latest Action Counters Terrorism campaign.

New Special Constables join the City as force A group of 14 newly trained Special Constables have officially joined the City of London Police including what the force hope will be their first ever mounted volunteer officer. Special Constables are trained volunteers who work with and support their local police force and have the same powers as regular police constables. City of London Specials have been assisting their regular colleagues in policing the Square Mile for over 100 years.

In 2017, the City of London Police received 81 reports from members of the public but know there were probably many people who didn’t report their concerns through fear of wasting police time, being wrong, or getting someone into trouble. What should I report? Like other criminals, terrorists need to plan. You will know your neighbourhood, your route to work, the parks, pubs and shops you visit often, better than we do. If you see anything that seems out of place, unusual or just doesn’t seem to fit in with everyday life, don’t be afraid to raise your concerns with the police.

Detective Superintendent Dermont Robinson, head of Counter Terrorism at the City of London Police, said: “We all have a part to play in keeping each other and the communities we live in safe. I can assure you that no call or online contact will be ignored and that the police will only take action after appropriate checks have been carried out. Remember, reporting is confidential. Trust your instincts and get in touch if something doesn’t feel right. If you have concerns we want to hear from you as soon as possible.” How can I report? You can report – in confidence – online at act.campaign.gov.uk or call 0800 789 321. Remember, in an emergency always call 999.

Following their passing out ceremony, the new group of Specials will join the City’s Uniform Policing Directorate where they will each be allocated to a Sergeant who will be directly responsible for their development. Because of the expertise and support the Specials bring, the City has been selected to host a national pilot scheme to establish a new ‘gold standard’ for the recruitment, training, development, and deployment of volunteers. This will see the numbers of Specials in the City double from 53 to over 100 with support being provided to regular constables but also in specialist areas such as cyber and economic crime.
