FEEDING LONDON: THE FORGOTTEN MARKET GARDENS FREE EXHIBITION
This exhibition celebrates the long history of market gardening in South West London, telling the story of commercial food-growing in the area, and includes sound-recorded memories of workers and families which bring the past to life. Also on display will be a selection of material from Guildhall Library’s fascinating gardening collections.

EXHIBITION LATE VIEW AND LAUNCH
5 April, 6-8pm £5 plus booking fee, includes a glass of wine Join historian David Lawrie to hear about the leading families who cultivated the gardens and the nurseries and their impact on feeding London, right up until the 1970s, when the fruit, vegetables and cut flowers were abundant. Heritage project manager, Juliana Vandegrift, will also give an overview of the Model Market Garden created by their volunteer community. Includes an exclusive late view of the exhibition.
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF GARDENERS’ AT GUILDHALL LIBRARY 14 April, 2-3pm, FREE This illustrated talk will introduce you to some of the delightful books in this collection which you are welcome to read and enjoy.
SHIRLEY HIBBERD, THE FATHER OF AMATEUR GARDENING
12 May, 2-3pm, FREE Shirley Hibberd was a London journalist, scientist and naturalist who became the first successful writer specifically for amateur gardeners, hitherto ignored by professionals with vested interests. Also a campaigner for the environment and animal rights, he proved to be a man ahead of his time and now deserves recognition. Join Anne Wilkinson to learn more.
