SHAKESPEARE IN SHAKESPEARE SOUTHWARK WALK CITY WALK Tuesday 22 April, 11am-1pm, and Tuesday 22 April, 6-8pm, and Wednesday 23 April, 11am-1pm. £10 – pay on the day (no booking required) Meet at the tree next to the London Bridge Experience/London Tombs horror attraction at London Bridge station The vibrant, bawdy, anarchic suburb of Shakespeare’s time is brought to life in actor Declan McHugh’s two hour tour, complete with ample quotations from Shakespeare and others.

Following Shakespeare’s life on the Northbank of the Thames and visiting a variety of memorials, the tour reveals information about Shakespeare’s life, friends, loves and work. Actor and tour guide Declan McHugh will perform Shakespeare speeches during this tour.

Through archaeological excavation and documentary research, Julian Bowsher has brought the theatres of Shakespeare’s London to life. From the Rose and the Globe, to the indoor theatres like Blackfriars, this vibrant story includes not only how the drama was played but the wider cutthroat world of theatrical competition.

Volunteer to read one or more of the 154 sonnets or drop in to listen throughout the day. Special guests will read selected sonnets and Dr Roy Booth, Senior Lecturer in Renaissance Literature at Royal Holloway, will launch the event with a brief introduction to the poems.

Was Shakespeare really as popular as we assume? What was his role in the development of drama as something to read as well as to see? Oxford Fellow Dr Emma Smith discusses the playwright in print during his lifetime. Following the talk, you can view the exhibition ‘Shakespeare in Print’.

In 1596 Blackfriars residents discovered that they had new neighbours: Shakespeare’s acting company had built an indoor theatre in this exclusive area. Dr Sarah Dustagheer considers why the actors chose this location, the theatre design they created, and how in 2014 the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is helping us re-imagine Shakespeare’s indoor theatre.

Shakespeare published none of his plays in his lifetime. His afterlife is in performance and the printed word. This exhibition explores Guildhall Library’s Shakespeare collections and how they were produced: treasures on display include the First Folio, the first collected edition of his plays, contemporary writers’ quartos, and later editions of Shakespeare’s plays and poetry.
