from banking to silk weaving, the huguenots – french protestant refugees who fled Catholic france in the 16-18th centuries – have made a huge contribution to spitalfields, and all other countries where they sought sanctuary. To celebrate their talent, a festival of walks, talks and special events has been planned. The festival marks the 250th anniversary of the death of anna Maria garthwaite (1690-1763), the outstanding english textile designer who lived in spitalfields and worked closely with huguenot silk weavers. This year is also the 415th anniversary of the signing of the edict of nantes (13 april 1598), which allowed the huguenots to worship freely. The festival, supported by the huguenot society, aims to raise funds for public artwork in spitalfields dedicated to the huguenots and for the huguenot heritage Centre in Rochester. for details of events in Rochester visit www.huguenotsofspitalfields.org

The human remains excavated from the crypt of Christ Church spitalfields form one of the most important collections in the world. nearly 400 (out of over 900) skeletons removed were named individuals. The original project collated a huge amount of information about their lives and social circumstances making the collection invaluable to the on-going research undertaken by the natural history Museum’s own and international researchers today. Cover image: georgian fanshawe dress, 1752 - 1753 © Museum of london Court dress traditionally thought to have been worn by Mrs. ann fanshawe when her father, Crisp gascoyne, was lord Mayor of london in 1752-53. Consisting of a bodice with a short skirt, stomacher and petticoat, this dress is made from a spitalfields woven white silk, brocaded with alternating motifs of silver cornucopia from which spill polychrome flowers, barley and hops. The bodice is open at the front with robings cuffs and sleeve ruffles enriched with silver lace. The stomacher is trimmed with the same lace, alternating with cream, yellow, green and mauve ribbon shells. The skirt is cut very wide at the side hoops. The merchant's packs, barley and hops incorporated in the design of the silk allude to Crisp gascoyne's profession as a london merchant and member and Master of the Brewers' Company.
