GUILDHALL YARD EC2V & ACROSS THE SQUARE MILE cityoflondon.gov.uk/somme
Michael St Maur Sheil’s evocative photographs conceal the terror and suffering played out on the battlefields of WWI. Sites once host to the bloodiest military battle in history have been skilfully photographed to capture the scars of the Western Front and highlight nature’s remedial power.
The main exhibition will take place at Guildhall Yard EC2V (off Gresham St) Bank, Moorgate, St Paul’s, Mansion House Due to functions and activities scheduled to take place in Guildhall Yard, it is recommended visitors avoid 15 & 24 June as access to the main exhibition will be limited.
With thanks to, Causeway Institute for Conflict Resolution, City of Belfast, Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Imperial War Museum, Irish Department of Foreign Affairs Reconciliation Fund, Mary Evans Picture Library, P&O Ferries.
Satellite exhibition and lecture series made possible thanks to the generous support of:
100 years on, relive a battle that resulted in 1.2m casualties and changed British history forever.
This outdoor exhibition features images of the present-day battlefields alongside archive pictures of the trenches during the Great War. A timely salute to the centenary anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the photographs illustrate nature as an agent of reconciliation, by healing the wounds of war and turning places of horror and death into landscapes of great peace and beauty. The exhibition is accompanied by a programme of lectures and events taking place around Guildhall Galleries and a series of smaller, satellite displays found at key locations around the City.
EVENTS Commemorate a combat that affected our collective history through a series of lectures and exhibitions taking place around Guildhall Galleries.
