Gerald Finley Julius Drake

Outcry Ensemble Autumn Concert

Schubert Schwanengesang Brahms Vier Ernste Gesänge For the final concert in the 2018 Temple Song Series, Julius Drake is joined by one of the great baritones of our day, the Canadian Gerald Finley. Hugely admired for his interpretations of Don Giovanni, Hans Sachs, Guillaume Tell, Falstaff and Oppenheimer in Doctor Atomic, Finley is also a consummate recitalist. His song recordings with Julius Drake for Hyperion have won Gramophone Awards on three separate occasions and concerts include regular recital tours of North America and Europe. For his return to Middle Temple Hall, Gerald Finley has titled his programme Swansongs. The final songs of Brahms, his glorious Vier Ernste Gesänge are performed alongside Schubert’s posthumous cycle, Schwanengesang.

Brahms Violin Concerto in D major Misha Mullov-Abbado New Commission Schubert Symphony No.8 “Unfinished” Outcry Ensemble, now in their second year as Associate Orchestra of the Temple Music Foundation, return to Middle Temple Hall with a programme including Brahms’ Violin Concerto. Written for Brahms’ friend and virtuoso violinist, Joseph Joachim, and known for its lyrical melodies and rich orchestration, the concerto fuses a sense of grandeur with the Hungarian folk rhythms of Joachim’s homeland. The concert will close with Schubert’s mysteriously unfinished Symphony No. 8, described by a critic at the first performance as ‘a sweet stream of melodies… so crystal-clear that you can see every pebble’.

Chamber Concert with IMS Prussia Cove Krysia Osostowicz violin Alinka Rowe viola Joy Lisney cello Mishka Momen piano Mendelssohn Variations Sérieuses Op.54 for solo piano Vieuxtemps Élégie Op.30 for viola and piano Ravel Sonata for Violin and Cello Brahms Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor Op.25 Following their sold-out performance in Parliament Chamber in 2018, players from the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove will make a welcome return to the Temple with repertoire that they have rehearsed and studied intensively during the IMS seminar in Cornwall. While the first part of the programme will showcase the individual instruments, all four players will come together to close the concert with Brahms’ first Piano Quartet with its intensely lyrical slow movement and folk-influenced finale.

Greg Morris conductor Augusta Hebbert soprano Gareth John baritone Temple Singers Temple Chamber Ensemble Brahms’ German Requiem, written as a tribute to his mother, and designed to comfort the grieving, has touched many people’s lives since it was composed in 1868. In terms of both length and musical content, Ein Deutches Requiem is Brahms’ largest single work. Deeply moving, profound and powerful, its status as one of the greatest monuments of choral music – especially among its nineteenth-century peers – is unchallenged. Although originally written for choir, soloists and large orchestral forces, the Temple Singers will present an exciting new version; the orchestral parts have been rearranged for chamber ensemble consisting of flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, ‘cello and piano by Iain Farrington, though the choral and solo parts remain untouched. This is a unique opportunity to hear a sensitively re-worked interpretation of a timeless choral classic.

Tickets include an interval drink. For further details and information about our concerts, or notification of any changes in the programme, please visit www.templemusic.org or call 020 7427 5641

Whilst coming from very different eras, William Byrd and Arvo Pärt are both considered masters of sacred music despite having faced considerable persecution for their work. This programme presents six of William Byrd’s works from the Cantiones Sacrae including the monumental Tribue, Domine, and the mighty eight-voice motet Ad Dominum cum tribularer. The three works by Arvo Pärt speak in his unmistakable voice, with its unique blend of ancient and modern, and include his mesmerising Nunc dimittis which is crafted in his bell-like ‘tinitinnabuli’ style.
