AN INDIAN SUMMER
2009 WAS THE YEAR THE FORCE INDIA FORMULA ONE TEAM TRULY ARRIVED IN F1. .
_03
One pole, one podium and one fastest lap signalled the end of obscurity and a tangible step towards becoming a front running team. In doing so, it was the first glimmer of the fulfilment of the dream laid by Dr Vijay Mallya and the Mol family on purchasing the team two years previous. The team was created in the final months of 2007 when Dr Mallya, owner of India’s iconic UB Group and Kingfisher Airlines, and Jan & Michiel Mol, Dutch e-commerce businessmen, founded a joint venture company named Orange India Holdings. The company bought the team from the Dutch car manufacturer Spyker Cars N.V. and the next year, in 2008, made history when the Force India F1 Team took to the track as the first-ever Indian Formula 1 team entered into the FIA Formula One World Championship. The team is based in Silverstone, UK, and will contest the 2010 championship, its third year of competition, with German Adrian Sutil and Italian Tonio Liuzzi as race drivers. Paul di Resta, from Scotland, will ably support Adrian and Tonio as test and reserve driver. Although still a relatively young team, Force India has a strong heritage and deep roots in the sport. It is built from the ashes of Jordan Grand Prix, which was established by Irishman Eddie Jordan in 1991. Although always one of the smaller teams
in the field, it had a constant ability to run with the front teams and, at times, out-race them. Over time Jordan Grand Prix scored three victories and numerous podiums, becoming one of F1’s most successful teams. In 2004 Jordan sold the team to the Midland Group and it was renamed Midland F1 Racing in 2005. Following the purchase of the team by Spyker Cars N.V. in 2006, it subsequently became the Spyker Formula One Team for the 2007 championship before Force India was created in the final months of that year. With its name and patriotic logo now incorporating the colours of the Indian flag and its chakra, the team has become a sporting representation of the emerging generation of young, success-hungry, fast paced global Indians and the growing strength of India as a nation.

I DON’T THINK I AM BEING OVER-PROUD WHEN I SAY 2009 WAS AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR FOR THE FORCE INDIA FORMULA ONE TEAM. THE BARE STATISTICS SAY IT ALL: AND ALL FROM A TEAM THAT PEOPLE WERE ACCUSTOMED TO DESCRIBING AS ‘BACK OF THE GRID’ OR ‘F1’S MINNOWS.’ Small we still are, but backmarkers we certainly are not. When I bought the team in 2007 a lot of observers thought that my assertions of making the team into a front runner was over-ambitious; it was even arrogant. But I had the faith in my team management, I had the faith in my drivers and, most of all, I had the faith that the team’s spirit would shine through and make that crucial difference.
Sure enough along the way we have had our teething problems, as any new team has, but this has just made us stronger. We’ve learnt from our experiences and we’ve come out a better team: resilient, resourceful and now resurgent. I hope 2010 will see this great progress carrying forward. We’ve got one podium so far but I would hope that, this time next year, I’m talking about more points and more podiums. I’m confident we can get this, why not aim high – we’ve done it once before! Dr. Vijay Mallya
06_FORCE INDIA HISTORY / INTRODUCTION
‘WE HAVE ACHIEVED OUR OBJECTIVES AND THEN SOME MORE AND CAN ONLY BUILD ON THIS OVER THE WINTER INTO 2010.’ ............... 2009 DR. VIJAY MALLYA
Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella start the season and solid car development soon shows Force India’s potential. Mid-season, Force India finally secures its first points, but does so in style with Fisichella snatching a pole position and podium at the Belgian Grand Prix. Added to this, the team started in the top ten in Germany, Italy, Japan and Brazil and finishes the year ninth in the constructors’ championship with 13 points. Tonio Liuzzi steps up from the test and reserve driver role in Italy to replace the Ferrari-bound Fisichella and starts in the top ten. Sutil grabs his first points in over a year in Italy, also posting the fastest lap of the race.
‘WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE RESULT WE HAVE HAD HERE. I AM SO PROUD OF GIANCARLO, THE TEAM IN THE GARAGE AND THE FACTORY AND ALSO FOR THE ENTIRE INDIAN NATION. THERE IS NOTHING MORE TO SAY: WE’VE DONE BOTH OURSELVES AND THE COUNTRY PROUD.’ DR. VIJAY MALLYA ‘THE TEAM NEVER GAVE UP. WE LIKE THE FIGHT, THE TEAM ARE FIGHTERS AND WE WILL GIVE THE MAXIMUM.’ TONIO LIUZZI
_07
2008 The Force India Formula One Team makes history in Australia as the first Indian team to contest a round of the FIA Formula One World Championship. Fisichella partners Sutil, aided by Liuzzi as test and reserve driver. The team finishes the year with no points, but made strong progress over the year, signing a partnership with McLaren and Mercedes to supply a complete drivetrain for 2009.
‘TO BE ONE OF 11 TEAMS PARTICIPATING IS ITSELF IS A MATTER OF GREAT PRIDE. NOT EVERYONE CAN SAY WE OWN AN F1 TEAM AND WE ARE ON THAT GRID. IT TAKES A LOT TO BE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. YOU’RE EFFECTIVELY COMPETING AT THE VERY HIGHEST LEVEL IN THE WORLD FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. DR. VIJAY MALLYA
2007 The Force India Formula One Team is created. The Orange India Holdings group, led by Dr Vijay Mallya and Jan and Michiel Mol, purchases the team from the Spyker Formula One Team to form India’s first ever Formula One team.
‘WHAT CAN I ADD? WELL, FIRST OF ALL I BRING INDIA TO THE F1 TABLE. SECONDLY, OUT-OF-THE-BOX THINKING. I HAVE PROVED WITH ALL MY BUSINESSES THAT, WITH AN ATYPICAL APPROACH, SUCCESS IS POSSIBLE EVEN IN THE MOST CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENTS. DR. VIJAY MALLYA

THE FORCE INDIA FORMULA ONE TEAM FINISHED THE 2009 SEASON AS A GENUINE REGULAR CONTENDER FOR POINTS AND THE NEW 2010 CHALLENGER, THE VJM03, BUILDS ON THE SOLID FOUNDATIONS ESTABLISHED BY ITS PREDECESSOR, WHICH TOOK POLE FOR THE BELGIAN GP. .
_11
With driver consistency in Adrian Sutil and Tonio Liuzzi and the able support of Paul Di Resta in the test and reserve driver role, this year the team is looking forward to a strong performance right from the start of the year.
‘Even with the ban of double diffusers for 2011, we recognise that we still have to push as much as we possibly can in this area in 2010 as we have targets to meet and the double diffuser is a key development aspect of the car.’
‘Our goal is to continue on the same path of performance improvement that we had at the end of 2009,’ says chairman and team principal Dr Vijay Mallya. ‘I don’t think I am being over-proud when I say 2009 was an exceptional year for us. The bare statistics say it all: one podium, one pole position, one fastest lap, a further five top 10 starts and 13 points. We’ve learnt from our experiences and we’ve come out a better team: resilient, resourceful and now resurgent. I hope 2010 will see this great progress carrying forward. We’ve got one podium so far but I would hope that, this time next year, I’m talking about more points and more podiums. I’m confident we can get this, why not aim high?’
Last year’s VJM02 was noticeably quicker on the low downforce circuits, however Mark is confident that this year the VJM03 will be strong across the board: ‘The VJM02 was a relatively low drag car that showed well on the low downforce tracks. As was demonstrated throughout 2009, that was a useful attribute but as we go into 2010 we have tried to maintain a high level of aerodynamic efficiency, but we recognise that our championship position will be enhanced by a general level of performance that is suited to all types of circuits. We have, we believe, quite an efficient car overall.’
While the VJM03 is an evolution of last year’s strong car, it incorporates the package of rules changes introduced for this year, including the requirement for a larger fuel tank as a result of the refuelling ban and a switch to narrower front tyres. Technical director Mark Smith explains: ‘The VJM03 is definitely an evolution of the VJM02 in terms of the design philosophies we have developed at Force India over the last year. We are very happy with the direction, therefore we have opted to evolve the car rather than significantly revise. ‘Obviously one of the major aspects we have had to contend with are regulation changes which have had a considerable impact on some aspects of the design of the car. The removal of refuelling from races increases the amount of fuel needed to be stored in the cars – almost twice the amount we ran in 2009. There is a compromise now: either make the car much longer or wider, or, as we have done, a combination of both. This of course has influenced the mechanical design solutions and also the aerodynamics, specifically with respects to the diffuser and bodywork.
Adrian Sutil is eagerly anticipating the start of the season: ‘2010 is a really important season and we are very optimistic about going well. I think this year it’s important to be consistent from the first race. I’d like to be in the midfield and be competitive from Bahrain. It’s the first time we have been completely on schedule so I feel this will be the first season when I can show from the beginning to the end what is possible with the car and what I can do. Of course we will have updates and performance packages from this point on but I hope we will be strong from the first practice session rather than compromising at the start.’ Meanwhile Tonio Liuzzi is also going to the season with a strong goal: ‘After one and a half years in a test role, I feel really prepared, both physically and mentally for a full race season. My objective is to be as strong and consistent as possible and give good feedback to the team to help them improve. For sure scoring points as many times as I can is going to be the key and you never know, perhaps we can get something more as well if everything comes together.’
12_NEW REGULATIONS
WHAT’S NEW IN 2010 CHANGES TO THE SPORTING AND TECHNICAL REGULATIONS IN 2010
_13
No Refuelling Refuelling will not be a feature of F1 for the first time since 1993. Typically until now teams built their cars to take a fuel load of around 80-90kgs. That capacity has risen to 170kgs or more to ensure that cars can safely reach the end of races where consumption is particularly high. Pit stops will be as important as ever, however, as drivers will be obliged to make at least one stop. As last year they have to use both the prime and option tyres at some stage during the course of the race. Narrower Front Tyres The front tyres have been narrowed by 20mm, which means there is less rubber in contact with the ground and the tyres will in effect be under greater stress. Bridgestone wanted to make this change last season, the first year with slick tyres, but teams had already begun to design their cars around the existing front tyre size. Fewer Sets of Tyres Per Weekend Drivers now have fewer sets of dry tyres to use each weekend. The allocation has been cut from 14 to 11 sets each, comprised of six primes (the harder tyre), and five options (the softer tyre). To help guarantee that the track is busy on Friday, one set of primes has to be returned to Bridgestone after P1, and thus can only be used in that session. After P2 a further set of primes and a set of options also have to be returned, leaving drivers with eight sets – four of each compound – for the remainder of the weekend. Top 10 Start on Tyres on Which They Qualified An extra element has been added to strategy with a rule that requires the 10 drivers who make it to Q3 to start on exactly the same set of tyres on which they qualified, although that only applies if both qualifying and the race require dry tyres.
Eight Engines for 19 Races The rule specifying that drivers only have eight engines per season remains in place. However, while there were only 17 events last year, this season that allocation has to be stretched over 19 race weekends. Henceforth if a driver uses two additional engines in one weekend – in other words his ninth and 10th of the season – he will drop 10 places on the grid for that race, and 10 places on the grid for the next race. Ban on Wheel Covers or Fairings In recent years cars have sprouted dramatically shaped wheel covers or ‘spinners,’ which were intended to improve aerodynamic efficiency. They have now been banned, in essence as a cost saving measure. Safety Car Restarts Restarts after safety car periods could be more spectacular this year, because the field is now released at the safety car line – in effect adjacent to the pit entry – rather than at the start/finish line. Overtaking will be allowed as soon as cars pass the safety car line. Testing for Substitute Drivers Testing during the season is banned, as before. However there is now provision for any replacement driver to have a day of testing in order to acclimatise, although it cannot take place at a circuit that is used for a race. New Points System A Grand Prix winner will now get 25 points rather than 10, and the top 10 finishers will be rewarded on the basis 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1.

ADRIAN REMAINS WITH FORCE INDIA FOR A FOURTH CONSECUTIVE SEASON, HUNGRY TO ACHIEVE BOTH HIS, AND THE TEAM’S, ULTIMATE GOAL OF BECOMING A REGULAR POINTS AND PODIUM CHALLENGER.
_15
2009 was Adrian’s most successful year in F1 since his 2007 championship debut. As the VJM02 steadily improved performance over the season, Adrian qualified seventh on the grid for his home Grand Prix in Germany and then put the car on the front row at Monza. After a hard race he secured fourth position and the fastest lap of the race, his best result to date in F1. Further impressive qualifying positions followed in both Japan and Brazil, where he qualified in the top four. Adrian got his break into F1 in 2006 when he joined the Midland F1 team for three Friday practice sessions. His speed and commitment impressed the team and he was signed on a multi-year race seat contract starting from 2007 when it became Spyker Formula One Team. The young German made quite an impression on the field; he shone in Monaco to head the timesheets in practice and then secured his, and the team’s, first world championship point in a rain-lashed Japanese Grand Prix that had claimed many more experienced drivers. For 2008, Adrian remained with the team in its new Force India guise. He did not score any points that season but again featured well in several races, including the Monaco Grand Prix in which he so nearly got an unexpected fourth position.
Until his early teenage years, however, Adrian was destined for a career in music rather than motor racing. His father, Jorge, who had migrated from Uruguay to Germany in his late 20s, played the violin in the Müncher Philharmonie for many years and his mother, Monika, was also a talented musician. The young Adrian learnt to play piano to concert pianist standard. Adrian’s first contact with motorsport was when his brother took him to a karting track aged just 14. He never looked back to music and, instead, resolved to get to the pinnacle of the sport; Formula 1. In his first season in single-seater motorsport in 2002, he won the Formula Ford Swiss championship with 12 pole positions and 12 wins in 12 races. In 2004 he graduated to the Formula 3 Euroseries, securing four podiums in his maiden season. In 2005 Adrian moved to the ASM team, finishing second in the championship to 2008 F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, with 11 podiums in 18 races. He also participated in three A1GP races for A1 Team Germany, but in 2006 moved across to the Far East to compete in the Japanese F3 championship. With strong performances throughout the year, Adrian secured his first international title with five wins, which paved the way to his first contact with F1 later than year.

VITANTONIO LIUZZI Tonio joined Force India to fulfil the crucial development role for its debut Formula 1 campaign in 2008 and moved up to a race seat from the 2009 Italian Grand Prix.
starts, including nine pole positions, Tonio stormed to the championship. The Italian holds the joint all-time record for F3000 wins along with Juan Pablo Montoya and Nick Heidfeld.
The Italian has a rich history in the junior formula. After success in the domestic and international karting championships, he won karting’s equivalent of Formula 1 in 2001. That same year Tonio also finished second in the German Formula Renault Championship.
For the 2005 season Tonio joined the newly formed Red Bull Racing team in Formula 1. With David Coulthard confirmed as one race driver, Tonio and Christian Klien shared the second seat, with Klien getting three races before Tonio finally made his F1 race debut on home soil at Imola. Scoring the final point on offer was certainly a promising start, but he only retained the car for a further three races before Klien took over for the rest of the season.
During 2002 Tonio contested the German Formula 3 Championship and established his reputation as one of the quickest drivers in the series. Three pole positions, three podiums and a dominant pole to flag victory in the San Marino International Formula 3 race at Imola displayed his true potential. In 2003 Tonio contested the FIA F3000 International Championship and again success quickly followed as he finished fourth overall. His 2003 performances earned him the lead drive with that year’s championship winning team, Arden International, for 2004. Taking seven wins from a total of ten
Tonio moved to sister outfit Toro Rosso in 2006, where he remained for the 2007 season. Inclement weather conditions at the 2007 Chinese Grand Prix gave the team the opportunity to grab points and Tonio took a career-best sixth. A swap to Force India beckoned and Tonio now looks forward to his first full season since the move, with the aim of securing solid points finishes throughout the year.

DR. VIJAY MALLYA CHAIRMAN AND TEAM PRINCIPAL
DR VIJAY MALLYA IS THE CHARISMATIC BUSINESSMAN HEADING UP ONE OF INDIA’S LARGEST AND MOST SIGNIFICANT BUSINESS EMPIRES, THE UB GROUP. . With annual sales of over US $4 billion and a market capitalisation of approximately US $12 billion, the Group has diverse interests in brewing, distilling, real estate, engineering, fertilisers, biotechnology, information technology and aviation. It is also the largest Indian manufacturer of beer and spirits. In the late 80s, Dr. Mallya pursued global opportunities to transform the UB Group into India’s first multinational company and in 1988, in a leveraged buyout, acquired the global Berger Paints Group with operating companies across four continents. In 1990, following the Government of India’s liberalised economic policies, Dr. Mallya decided that the UB Group would only retain interests in businesses that were globally competitive. He also decided to focus on areas of core competence and transformed the vastly diversified UB conglomerate into a handful of key operating businesses including spirits, beer and Kingfisher Airlines.
Kingfisher Airlines is today the market leader in India’s booming aviation market. With the merger of Air Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines, the airline covers all segments of air travel from low fares to premium fares and offers the maximum number of flights offered by any single airline network in India. It has added international routes from Bangalore and Mumbai to London, Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong to its armoury over a two year period. In 2007, United Spirits Limited, the flagship of the UB Group, also acquired a hundred percent of premium scotch distillers Whyte & Mackay and Liquidity Inc, a United States-based maker of speciality vodkas. In addition to his Chairmanship of several other corporations, Dr. Mallya has been the Chairman of Aventis Pharma India (previously Hoechst) as well as the Chairman of Bayer Crop Science in India (previously Agrevo) for over 20 years. Dr. Mallya has received several professional awards both in India and overseas. He was conferred a Doctorate of Philosophy in Business Administration by the Southern California University, Irvine, and has also been nominated as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum.
_25
One of Dr Mallya’s major passions has however always been cars and motorsport in particular. He has had a longstanding presence in motorsport dating back to the 1970s and 80s when he participated in several club races and non-championship Grands Prix, including the Madras and Calcutta Grands Prix, in Mo Nunn-owned Ensigns. When Dr. Mallya was elected by shareholders as Chairman of UB in 1983 at the age of 28 business interests began to take considerably more of his time, he took to collecting and racing historic and vintage cars in the UK. In the late 90s Dr Mallya returned to Formula 1, this time as a sponsor. Kingfisher beer logos appeared on the Benetton Formula One Team in 1996 and 1997 and in 2007, Kingfisher Airlines was a sponsor of the Panasonic Toyota Formula One Team. During this time Dr Mallya’s imagination was fired again for F1 and, spotting a unique business opportunity, he formed a joint venture company with Jan and Michiel Mol to purchase the Spyker Formula One Team at the end of 2007. 32_RESOURCE RESTRICTION / ANATOMY OF A RACE TEAM
ANATOMY OF A RACE TEAM
THIS YEAR ALL F1 TEAMS WILL HAVE TO COMPLY WITH A RULE PUT IN PLACE BY FOTA, THE FORMULA ONE TEAMS ASSOCIATION. AS PART OF ONGOING EFFORTS TO KEEP A LID ON COSTS, FOTA HAS INTRODUCED A RESOURCE RESTRICTION AGREEMENT, WHICH LIMITS TEAMS TO TAKING ONLY 45 PEOPLE WITH A DIRECT INVOLVEMENT IN OPERATING THE CARS TO EACH RACE WEEKEND. .
_33
Although that figure does not include staff in other areas, getting down to 45 has been a headache for some of the bigger teams. However for Force India it hasn’t been a problem, because it has traditionally operated on race weekends in a lean and efficient manner.
You might surprised to learn that only nine people in the crew actually have the word ‘mechanic’ in their job titles. The chief mechanic oversees four guys on each car, with each crew led by a number one. Also working on the cars are a hydraulics technician and gearbox technician.
“We haven’t adjusted the amount of people we take at all,” explains team manager Andy Stevenson. “We’re taking exactly the same number, and it actually fits directly into the suggested restrictions, almost as if they used us as a model!
Other key jobs in the garage include parts co-ordinator, electronics technician (a second one will be present for the opening race) and IT technician. The latter is responsible for the complex network of communications in the garage.
“It’s event dependent, but we will take between 40 and 45 people. We won’t always take the maximum 45, if they’re not required. For instance for Bahrain we will take 45, as it’s the first race of the year. We need that additional support at the start of the season because you do arrive with more work to do, because you’re developing the car so fast from everything you’ve learned while you’ve been testing.
Two composite technicians look after all the bodywork, including the car floors, which can take a battering and need regular attention. Two tyre technicians ensure that tyres are ready when required, and correctly pressured and heated. They are also qualified truck drivers. Although the team doesn’t have any vehicles present at races outside Europe, three other truckies are always on hand at ‘flyaways.’ They have a variety of tasks in and around the garage, including refuelling the cars during sessions.
“Also with the first races you don’t have the luxury of taking the cars back to the factory, so obviously we need as much support as we can. For the next couple of races we’ll have 43, and by the time we get to the European season we’ll be down to nearer 40.” Those not working directly on running the cars come under the ‘exemption’ rule, and there is flexibility on numbers. “The RRA only covers staff who are hands-on and operational with the car. But we can take anything up to 75 in total, which would include all of the catering, hospitality, marketing, the physios and so on. Even the drivers and the team principal come under the exemption law!” The RRA does include some areas of management, including chief operating officer Otmar Szafnauer, and Andy himself. The RRA covers all engineering staff, led by head of race and test engineering Dominic Harlow. He’s joined by Adrian and Tonio’s race engineers, and two performance engineers, who ensure a flow of information between the two cars. Also present are the head of control engineering and two control engineers, who look after the control systems on the car, a data engineer, responsible for the flow of data and telemetry, and a reliability engineer.
The race team includes 10 people who are not direct employees of Force India, mostly as a result of the team’s engine and gearbox supply deals. Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines brings six staff – a team leader, two engineers and three technicians – while McLaren Applied Technologies sends a gearbox engineer and two technicians. One of the unsung heroes of any race team is the radio engineer, who ensures that there is always a clear signal between the car and the pits. He’s delegated to the team by Riedel, the German communications company that also supplies the FIA. The list of team members outside the RRA is more likely to fluctuate between races. For example, the number of marketing and hospitality staff required to attend will vary depending on the number of VIPs or sponsor guests expected at a race. In addition to the marketing and communications team, the exemption list also includes those involved in logistics, the managers and physios who work with the drivers, a representative of lubricant suppliers Mobil, and the kitchen and catering staff. The last named group travel to events from Austria, rather than the team’s Silverstone base.
