JUNETEENTH STAGE PLAY
June 25, 2020—I.M. Terrell Performing Arts Ctr. Every year on June 19th millions of people around the world celebrate the Juneteenth tradition. It was started by former slaves as a way to remember when the last slaves were freed in Texas. • • •
Why were slaves in Texas freed two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation? Did anybody in Texas know about it? What finally made Texas comply?
The Juneteenth Stage Play offers answers to these and other questions, including insights into the lingering effects of slavery today. Prepare to be entertained as well as enlightened. Written, directed and produced by former Dallas Cowboy Greg Ellis, the play explores the strength of faith, love and I ngenuity that sustained the slaves to hold on until freedom came. Greg believes in the importance of not forgetting the sacrifices others have made for us to have the freedoms we enjoy today.
