Design workshop for researchers Programme information


Design workshop for researchers Organised and run by DesignScience

Through presentations, group discussions and practical participation, you will: • learn basic design knowledge • improve your communication skills • receive direction on how to engage with different audiences • explore how to work effectively with designers The workshop includes a full day’s tuition by experienced practitioners with refreshments throughout the day. During the workshop you will: • gain basic design knowledge for creating clear, accessible, accurate and eye-catching designs for posters, publications, presentations, websites etc • learn about data visualisation and graphic techniques that will help to explain complex research data • get advice on software tools for poster design, AV presentations and for producing figures and tables • understand what is possible within the constraints of design programs • receive design feedback tailored to your own specific subject requirements • gain insight into how to employ and/or collaborate with designers • gain confidence in engaging the public with their research

Part 1: Theory Introduction by DesignScience 2 minute presentation from each participant explaining the topic or field they wish to communicate Reflect/discuss as a group Visual presentation by DesignScience on design communication basics: theory, text and typography, colour, imagery, layout, context, production, modes of communication, communicating uncertainty, risk modelling and participation Brief issued to participants for preparing presentations for a non-specialist audience

Part 2: Practice Divide into small groups; individual tutorial feedback within groups discussing unique communication challenges of pieces of work proposed for presentations

1pm 2pm

LUNCH Continuation of individual tutorial feedback within groups 2 minute presentation by each participant in response to brief Short discussions and overview to finish

4pm

COFFEE BREAK / Informal discussions ‘Homework’ brief issued to participants for preparing for a public presentation / competition / science festival The DesignScience team will be contactable after the workshop via email for feedback / advice: info@design-science.org.uk


Part 3: Evaluation A feedback form will be supplied by DesignScience for participants to complete after the workshop Results from the workshops published online at www.design-science.org.uk

Additional information This workshop is aimed at PhD or post-doctoral researchers from all disciplines of science. Attendees normally have little or no design experience, but the workshops have proved equally useful to those with more extensive design knowledge.
