BALBOA GOLF COURSE Practice your swing on Balboa Golf Course's walkerfriendly course. Designed by Ault, Clark & Associates, Balboa’s wide fairways and few elevation changes offer walkers a great place to take a stroll while getting in a game. Water hazards, bunkers, and par 3s offer some challenges. Balboa’s 18-hole golf course includes a driving range, putting green, and short game area.

CORONADO GOLF COURSE Short on time but still want to play golf ? Coronado Golf Course's executive-length par-62 golf course is just the place. Designed by Ault, Clark & Associates, it is the only executive length course in Hot Springs Village. Although Coronado does not have sand bunkers, the course is as challenging from 150 yards as any other HSV course.

Coronado also offers a putting green.

CORTEZ GOLF COURSE Play Hot Springs Village Golf ! Cortez Golf Course, designed

by Ault, Clark & Associates, offers elevation changes, water hazards, and five sets of tees that will keep most players happy. Cortez’s No. 10 is considered one of the toughest holes in HSV, and No. 17 is breathtaking. The course features a driving range and putting green.

DESOTO GOLF COURSE DeSoto Golf Course is a great choice for families. The course, which was recently renovated, opened in 1972 as Hot Springs Village’s first golf course. Designed by Ault, Clark & Associates, the 18-hole course has three finishing holes and includes two par 5s and a par 4. DeSoto also includes a driving range and putting green.

ISABELLA GOLF COURSE Isabella Golf Course in Hot Springs Village was designed by Ault, Clark & Associates. The course is fun for both novice and professional, offering three nine-hole rotations — Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria— for a total of 27 holes of play. Ranked as the No. 1 course in Arkansas by Golf Digest, Isabella has plenty of twists, turns, and elevation changes to bring challenges to the game. HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE TRAILS DeSoto Nature & Spillway Trails The DeSoto Nature Trail is a natural surface, single track trail with a bench overlook. This moderate endurance walking trail does have some narrow and steep areas. The trailhead is near DeSoto Dog Park with parking available in the Lawn Bowling & Dog Park area. 1.2 miles. Trail Rating: Moderate The DeSoto Spillway Trail follows the DeSoto Spillway on the south side from DeSoto Park Lane to Lake DeSoto Spillway and is a gravel surface loop with some rocky and uneven terrain. The trailhead is near DeSoto Dog Park with parking available in the Lawn Bowling & Dog Park area. .77 miles. Trail Rating: Moderate

DeSotoTrail T The DeSoto Trail is mostly asphalt surface and has a variety of challenges with a few uphill climbs. Extend your walk, run or ride by crossing Calella Road onto the Waypoint Trail.

DeSoto Trail parking is available at the main lakeside trailhead on Calella Road and Waypoint Trail. 3.4 miles. Trail Rating: Moderate

WaypointTrail Listen to nature as you walk along Lake DeSoto on the Waypoint Trail. And be sure to stop in for a fresh cup of coffee or a sandwich at Waypoint Marina. .7 miles. Trail Rating: Easy

Magellan Beaver Dam Built by the HSV Audubon Society, Magellan Beaver Dam is a wetland nature trail with packed-gravel level surfaces and an abundance of wildlife. It’s a great trail for bird watching with signage to help identify species and a bird blind overlooking swamp land.

The path is located below Balboa Dam off Cloaca Rd near the Animal Shelter beginning just south of the boat storage.

Trailhead parking is available adjacent to Cloaca Rd. .6 miles. Trail Rating: Easy

Balboa Trail

The Balboa Trail is the most open trail in the Village, great for bird watching. The upper embankment benches offer a relaxing view of Lake Balboa. The trail is located on and behind the embankment connecting Lake Balboa primary and secondary spillways and connects Balboa Beach to Hernando Trail at DeSoto Boulevard and Ponce de Leon Drive. Trailhead parking access is located off Ponce de Leon Drive. 2.1 miles. Trail Rating: Moderate/Easy

The Cedar Creek Trail is one of the most beautiful trails in the Village offering wildflowers, bird watching, creek-view benches, bridges and four paths: The Bluebird Path, the Mourning Dove Path, the Kingfisher Path, and the Cardinal Path.

Two trailhead parking areas are available on Minorca Road.

3.1 miles. Trail Rating: Easy

Coronado Boat Ramp The Coronado Boat Ramp Trail, located at the Coronado Boat Ramp off Murillo Way, borders Lake Coronado and offers fishing, benches, bird watching, handicapped accessibility, and a paved path to Anglers Island. Trailhead parking is available at the Coronado Boat Ramp. .35 miles. Trail Rating: Easy

Hernando West & East Trails Favored by cyclists, the Hernando Trail is the longest, multipurpose, packed-gravel trail in Hot Springs Village running parallel to DeSoto Boulevard from Ponce de Leon Dr to DeSoto Park Lane. This trail fluctuates between level sections and challenging hills especially near Minorca Rd. Bike, cart, or walk to Grove Park to enjoy events like Green Market (farmers’ market), Artisan Markets, Rock Porch Music Sessions, or Rhythm Jams. Mileage markers run from east to west. Various parking options include the east-end trailhead near Ponce de Leon Dr, the Ponce de Leon Center/Woodlands Auditorium lot, Danville Road trailhead, the medical clinic at Cortez Rd., and the DeSoto Dog Park/Lawn Bowling parking lot.

8.6 miles. Trail Rating: Difficult Overall/Moderate Sections

Coronado Fitness Trail The Coronado Fitness Trail is a new, winding trail that connects the Coronado Fitness Center and the Coronado RV Park along the Lake Pineda Spillway flowing into Lake Coronado.

Trailhead parking areas are available at the Fitness Center. 1 mile. Trail Rating: Easy 17

John & Mildred

Cooper Preserve Trail

Owned by the Nature Conservancy, the preserve is located off Rocoso Drive on a gravel access road. Signage is located at the entrance. There are three trails within the preserve: Saline River, Piney Woods, and Cooper.

Preserve trails are all-natural surfaced paths.

Parking is available for all preserve trails on the left along the access road.

Trail Rating: Beginner - Intermediate Saline River Trail - 1.8 miles This Cooper Preserve trail encompasses beautiful views of the middle fork of the Saline River. The trail can be accessed at the end of the access road or by taking the Piney Woods Loop and making a left at the fork and following the trail signs.

Piney Woods Trail - 1 mile loop This Cooper Preserve trail offers a shaded walk with some hilly sections. This is a great section for wildlife viewing. The trailhead is located directly at the preserve parking area.

Cooper Trail - 1 mile loop Cooper Preserve trail has both wooded and river views. The trailhead is located on the right of the access road past the parking area.

Herradura Trail – 0.4 mile This is a short trail in Herradura Subdivision.

Sonora-Emperado-Calella Multipurpose Trail – 0.4 mile This hilly, asphalt-surfaced path takes you along the north side of DeSoto Boulevard from the DeSoto Family Recreation Area across Sonora and Emperado Way to Calella Road at the DeSoto Center.

Carmona Cart/Bicycle Lane – 1.1 miles This asphalt-surfaced lane is on the east side of Carmona Road from DeSoto Boulevard to Barcelona Road.

PICKLEBALL Pickleball is a popular court sport played with a hard paddle and a perforated plastic ball. A hybrid of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong, pickleball is a fun, multigenerational game that can be played at all levels, making it possible for even those with limited physical abilities to stay active.

The Hot Springs Village Pickleball Club consists of 14 fenced courts hosting 250+ players per week, and the courts have LED lights for night play. The Club conducts weekly planned play sessions for all skill levels of play, women’s, men’s, and mixed groups, as well as organizes free introductory lessons with loaner equipment. REGIONAL TRAILS Hot Springs is home to a versatile trail system with offerings for riders of all ages and skill levels. Take a quick one-mile scenic loop or push yourself on one of our beginner to intermediate trails. For hardcore riders, Hot Springs has three IMBA Epic Rides, ranging from the heart-pumping 33-mile Womble Trail to the grueling 108-mile Ouachita National Recreational Trail. Hot Springs was designated as an IMBA Bronze-level Ride Center in 2015. Whatever level you’re on, take your ride to the next one in Hot Springs.

IMBA, Lake Ouachita Vista Trail 45 Miles, Skill Level: Intermediate This hiking and mountain-biking trail winds along the southern shore of Lake Ouachita. The serenely picturesque trail offers superb ridge-top riding. Though scenic, the LOViT trail travels up, down, and along mountain slopes, rolling through mixed hardwood and pine forests at an invigorating and moderately challenging pace. In the final 35-mile stretch, which includes the trek from Mountain Harbor to Hickory Nut Mountain, the ride is steep and strenuous, but the top rewards the adventure with breathtaking views of Lake Ouachita.

EPICS designation denotes a true backcountry riding experience: immersive rides that are technically and physically challenging, beautiful to behold, and worthy of celebration.

The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) is the worldwide leader in mountain bike advocacy, and the only organization in the U.S. focused entirely on trails and access for all types of mountain bikers in all parts of the country.

IMBA, 213.9 Miles, Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

This 108-mile stretch between the Talimena Scenic Byway and the Scenic 7 Byway (north of Hot Springs, near Mena) is the longest biking trail in Arkansas. It is a hiking trail which allows mountain biking through remote sections of the Ouachita Mountains. There are rugged trail surfaces, and some are hike-a-bike, but also rideable climbs with some exhilarating downhill sections. Popular bike climbs on the trail include Big Brushy, Blowout Mountain, and Irons Fork. The trail also connects with the Womble Trail, another IMBA Epic. This area is used as part of the Ouachita Challenge Mountain Bike Race.

WombleTrail

Among trails, the Womble is considered the jewel of the Ouachita Mountains.

The composition of Womble Trail is mostly loose rock with occasional areas of hard-packed dirt. There are vast opportunities for climbing, and a few of the climbs are steep and sustained, especially as you get closer to the Ouachita Trail on the north half of the Womble. The downhills offer extreme thrills. There are small creek crossings that are easy to cross, and larger creeks with bridges, so they do not present overlychallenging obstacles.

The Womble trail is also the key element of the annual Ouachita Challenge and Womble Classic Mountain Bike Race.

IMBA, 33 Miles, Skill Level: Intermediate

Caddo BendTrail 4 Miles, Skill Level: Intermediate The trail is splashed with large boulder gardens, scenic views, and an observation deck that overlooks the lake at the end of the point. The trail originates near the park amphitheater and circles the entire peninsula back to the beginning. The first half of the trail is rocky, and the terrain is a series of up and down plateaus. The second half is smoother with some moderate inclines.

Cedar GladesTrail

10 Miles, Skill Level: Intermediate, Advanced The Cedar Glades Park Loop is extremely fast with several technical descents. One long climb is filled with switchbacks, which are roughly 4% grade or more in some sections. The trail contains numerous creek crossings graced with plenty of rocks and moderate sized root systems. The last major climb is short, but it can be traversed quickly. The trail has a thick forest, spectacular mountain top glades, deep valleys, crystal streams (including a waterfall), and of course, the lake. The Dam Mountain Trail takes visitors through all of these beautiful features for a diverse and beautiful hike with great views of the lake, streams, and Falls Creek Falls.

Dead ChiefTrail 2.7 miles, Skill Level: Intermediate This trail, located near Hot Springs National Park, offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. This route starts out steeply but quickly levels out for a pleasant journey. Along the way, visitors can enjoy meandering through the pine and hardwood forest while listening to warblers in the trees. The trail skirts the main ridge of Hot Springs Mountain, and the route is non-technical.

Entergy Park offers nine trails, both off-road and paved, the majority under one mile in distance. It is an excellent biking destination for beginners as the trails are not strenuous, and the views are extraordinary.

Iron MountainTrail 24 Miles, Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate Iron Mountain features some of the best-groomed mountain bike trails in the Natural State. Overall, the trails are fairly smooth with a limited infusion of short technical sections. The orange and blue loops are wide-open and wind along the hillsides on the shores of DeGray Lake. The newer green and yellow routes on the south side of Skyline Drive offer some exhilarating descents that make the somewhat strenuous climbs to get up top well worth the effort.

26 Miles, Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced

Experience spectacular world-class mountain bike trails located only five minutes from downtown Hot Springs. The Northwoods system includes Green, Blue, and Black single track, multi-track, flow trails, jump lines, and the Lucky 13 expert section. The Cedar Glades trailhead includes a bike skills park. Northwoods is home to the annual Gudrun MTB Festival each November that attracts bikers, hikers, and trail runners.

West Mountain Trail

1.9 Miles, Skill Level: Intermediate

This trail has small gravel and packed dirt that make the trail a favorite for locals that like to do a bit of hiking. It's an easy trail with a slight grade but with good trail coverings. There are a number of hollow den trees on the trail that give shelter to forest animals. Both sections of West Mountain Trail have gradual change in elevation. West Mountain Trail can be made into a loop by using Mountain Top Trail.

Arkansas RiverTrail the Big Dam Bridge and the downtowns of Little Rock and North Little Rock starting on either side of the Clinton Presidential Park Bridge. The Two Rivers Park Bridge extends the Arkansas River Trail 34 miles to Pinnacle Mountain State 40 40 Park in west Pulaski County. Walkers, cyclists, skaters, and joggers all enjoy the trail and its beautiful surroundings.

Experienced cyclists use the Arkansas River Trail System “Grand Loop” that extends through Faulkner and Perry Counties to form a spectacular 88.5-mile loop.

Boyle Park 9.3 Miles, Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate Located in Little Rock, this trail series consists of three trails.

The south section is shorter with a pleasant climb as well as a few intermediate spots. The north nature trail has plenty of switchback climbs that traverse up and down hill. The west section is significantly less demanding. All trails contain numerous small rocks and roots making rides slightly more technical.

Burns Park MTB Trail is a 7.3-mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near North Little Rock that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as intermediate. The trail is a long and continuous loop and has a variety of terrain.

Bikers can expect to experience an easy, smooth single-track to rock gardens as well as short and steep climbs. While this trail has easy sections, overall, it is an intermediate trail and not for true beginners. There is a nice overlook of the quarry/golf course on the south side.

Harper's Loop

37 Miles, Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced

This 37-mile road ride offers a flat scenic ride into some classic Arkansas Delta areas. Harper’s Loop is a classic central Arkansas route. It is a picturesque adventure loop that whisks by some of the state’s finest farmland. The level terrain is graced by rows of cotton, corn, rice, and soybeans. This route is well-suited for everyone, from those just starting to hone their skills to those cyclists who want to perfect their pace-line skills.

There are eight fully equipped cabins with kitchens, and most of them overlook the lake. Additionally, there are four camper cabins located on the campground which include one room sleeping for four, heat/air, a screened porch, and a picnic table with grill. There is a family-style bathhouse nearby that is one large private room with a shower, sink, and toilet that is perfect for families with small children. The Caddo Bend Trail and Historic Three Sisters’ Springs are also in the park.

Since 1906, diamonds have continuously been discovered in the field, including the 8.66 Illusion Diamond ( found in 2011), the 8.52 carat Esparanza Diamond ( found in 2015), the 15.33 carat Star of Arkansas Diamond ( found in 1956), and the 40.23 carat Uncle Sam Diamond ( found in 1924). The Fordyce Bathhouse The Fordyce Bathhouse has a long history of serving guests as it opened to the public in 1915. In 1962, the bathhouse was shut down, leaving it to reopen in May of 1989, after some serious renovations that left it looking like it did in its early years of business. Lake Catherine A 1,940-acre recreational lake known for its excellent bass and crappie fishing formed by Carpenter and Remmel Dams. Lake Catherine State Park offers a fullservice marina with year-round boat rentals and a launch ramp. The park features a pavilion, picnic sites, playgrounds, and a well-marked nature trail that leads to a waterfall. The state park also has 20-fully equipped cabins overlooking Lake Catherine with a private beach and fishing pier. Guided horseback rides are offered seasonally.

DeGray Lake As evidenced by its popularity for fishing, camping, swimming, water-skiing, and other water sports, the 13,800-acre lake is a prime vacation and weekend getaway in west-central Arkansas. Situated among ridges of the Ouachita Mountains and formed by a dam across the Caddo River, the lake has more than 700 campsites, ranging from full hook-ups to primitive, and some 15 boat-launching ramps on its shores. Houseboating, sailing, and scuba ping are also popular, as is observing bald eagles that winter on DeGray.

Lake Greeson Lake Greeson is a man-made lake that was originally created as a flood control and hydropower project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is 12 miles long and is surrounded by 15,842 acres of public lands. Lake Greeson is famous for its scenic beauty, and the wide variety of recreational opportunities available on and near the lake, including boating, swimming, hiking, camping, and fishing. In fact, Lake Greeson has been recognized for its rich variety of fish, which include largemouth, smallmouth, spotted and white bass, flathead and channel catfish, black and white crappie, bluegill, sunfish, and trout.

Lake Hamilton Created in 1932 when the Arkansas Power and Light Company completed Carpenter Dam on the Ouachita River to generate electricity, Lake Hamilton is a 7,460acre popular recreational and residential lake. Hill Wheatley Park, located on the shore, has a popular swim area with a man-made sandy beach, picnic facilities, and restrooms. Water-skiing, pleasure boating, and fishing are popular Hot Springs attractions on Lake Hamilton, and rentals of watercraft and sport accessories are readily available.

Lake Ouachita Famous for its pristine water and scenic beauty, Lake Ouachita is the largest lake in the state (40,000 acres) with boating, fishing, paddle boarding, spear fishing, scuba diving, and camping. The lake has rugged shoreline with lots of islands and hidden coves and is a favorite for bass fishing.

RIVERS Caddo River Above DeGray Lake, the Caddo River is rated as an excellent "family" float stream, and outfitters, cabins, and other lodging are available. Below DeGray, the Caddo continues some four miles before joining the lower Ouachita River just north of Arkadelphia.

Little Missouri River The Little Missouri River, or Little Mo as it is affectionately called, is a 147-mile-long waterway that runs from the Ouachita Mountains of southwest Arkansas into the rolling hills area in the surrounding countryside. The river has numerous small waterfalls, crystal clear water, and spectacular scenery that includes towering rocky bluffs crowned with pine.

The Little Missouri River is a superior fishing stream for rainbow trout, green sunfish, longear sunfish, smallmouth bass, and spotted bass.

Ouachita River Below Lake Ouachita, the Ouachita River continues through the Ouachita Mountains, though two dams interrupt its flow near the resort town of Hot Springs to form Lakes Hamilton and Catherine. Below Lake Catherine, the stream travels south past Arkadelphia before leaving the Ouachita Mountain region and entering the West Gulf Coastal Plain, also known in Arkansas as the Timberlands region.

Fishing The tailwaters below Blakely, Carpenter, and Remmel Dams on the Ouachita River are seasonally stocked to enhance opportunities for anglers in the southern part of the state to fish for trout.

DAMS Blakely Dam Blakely Mountain Dam is located just six miles from Piney, in Garland County, near Mountain Pine. In addition to tiger trout, fishermen will find a variety of fish including flathead catfish, whitefish, crappie, bream, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, and catfish.

Whatever the mode of fishing—fly fishing, spinning, or bait-casting—Blakely Dam is a perfect destination for those who enjoy spending a day casting for trout on a cool mountain stream.

Carpenter Dam Carpenter Dam Park is a wonderful park on the east end of Lake Hamilton right next to the dam. This park covers approximately 15 acres and is perfect for spending the afternoon picnicking and marveling at the beauty of nature. Rainbow trout and striper are in abundance right at the base of Carpenter Dam, where the cold water rushes out below the water line.

There are some accessible and wadeable shoals near the dam, where fly fishers regularly cast for rainbow trout.

Remmel Dam Remmel Dam is situated on the Ouachita River at Jones Mills (Hot Spring County).

County). The dam impounds Lake Catherine, and together with Carpenter Dam in Hot Springs (Garland County), provides hydroelectric power for southern Arkansas. Rainbow trout are plentiful in the upper part of Lake Catherine below the dam. BASS FISHING

Arkansas has three bass known as black bass - largemouth, spotted, and smallmouth - and of those, the largemouth is the largest. Adults average 10 to 20 inches in length and a half to four and a half pounds, though eight-pound fish aren't uncommon.

Largemouth bass move from deep water to warmer shallows in the spring (usually Feb. to Apr.), several weeks before the bass season of spawning begins. Small streams like the Caddo River or Saline River offer opportunities for smallmouth bass action.

Class I: Fast moving water with riffles and small waves. Few obstructions.

Class II: Novice - Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels.

Occasional maneuvering, but rocks and medium-sized waves are easily missed by trained paddlers.

COSSATOT RIVER STATE PARK – WHITE WATER The Cossatot River features Class III, IV, and dangerous Class V rapids making it one of the more challenging float rivers in the central United States.

Brushy Creek Recreation Area offers restrooms, picnic tables, and access to the river via the Highway 246 bridge access point. Campsites are available at the Cossatot Falls Area (7 sites, no hookups), Sandbar Area (14 sites, no hookups), and the Ed Banks Area. The park is also home to dozens of rare flora and fauna native only to the Ouachita Mountains and surrounding Ouachita National Forest. The terrain of the park is a rugged rocky canyon with old growth hardwoods and juniper glades.

Hiking is available on the River Corridor Trail (14 miles) and Harris Creek Trail (3.5 miles). The Hot Springs Village Community Foundation was started in 1983 to assist educational, cultural and scientific programs in Garland and Saline Counties. In its nearly 40 years, HSV Community Foundation has given nearly $1 million in grants to local organizations that fulfill the needs of and improve the Village community and surrounding area.

The Village Walk for Cancer Research (WFCR) started as a small group of women walking to honor a friend with cancer. Gold Wing Road Riders Association Based out of Hot Springs, the Eagle Wings Chapter E of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, is a motorcycle group dedicated to riding and encompassing most of central Arkansas and surrounding areas. GWRRA welcomes men and women, as well as all brands of bikes and rides, in Arkansas and beyond. The Eagle Wings ride every week, weather permitting. They also have overnight weekend rides around Arkansas, and longer rides that might take them to South Dakota or Big Bend National Park, or any other possible area their members might suggest. HSV Razorback Club The Hot Springs Village Razorback Club supports all men’s and women’s Razorback athletics. That support includes attending some of the sporting events and also participating in fund-raising activities on behalf of the U of A Razorback Foundation’s athletic scholarship program.

The Hot Springs Village Razorback Club members are an active group, even without monthly meetings! Whether it’s going on a bus to a home football game in Fayetteville or an away game in another near-by state, heading to a University of Arkansas baseball game in Little Rock, or going on a very successful Club-sponsored cruise to a tropical locale... the Razorback Club members are there!

The annual golf tournament weekend in May is a major fundraiser as well as a great opportunity for the members to enjoy themselves while supporting the Razorback Foundation. In 2018, the HSV Razorback Club presented the Foundation with more than $10,000 for athletic scholarships in various men’s and women’s sports.

It may come as a surprise, but being a U of A alumnus is not a requirement for joining the HSV Razorback Club. While the majority of the approximately 300 members are actual Razorback alumni, a number of them are non-alumni newcomers to the Village who join the Club for the fun and camaraderie. The Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (HSVCPAAA) MILO Range Simulator System allows continuous training for Hot Springs Village police officers, and it provides a source of training

for security teams from churches as well as other organizations. HSVCPAAA Treasurer, Bruce Caverly, believes it is also beneficial to residents as it “assists them in preparing for situations at home, in the car, and at business locations.”

MILO Range is a world-leading firearms interactive training simulator provider for government, military, law enforcement, and police agencies worldwide. The HSVCPAAA purchased the MILO system with money raised through various fund-raising efforts, donations, and grant acquisitions. The association, which was founded

by Citizens Police Academy graduates, is committed to its mission of supporting the efforts of the Hot Springs Village (HSV) police department, including supplementing their financial resources and improving the safety of officers and residents.

Public usage of the MILO is available for recreational and entertainment use only. Operational instructions are provided, but training and/or legal advice is not a part of the experience. Mountain Valley Sportsman's Association (MVSA)

in Hot Springs, Arkansas, is a private club that consists of members who enjoy the shooting sports. MVSA encourages and promotes friendly competition, social camaraderie, and shooting skill development in an organized and safe format for pistol, rifle, and shotgun shooters. The top-notch facility welcomes members, nonmembers, and shooters from other clubs to participate in their events.

The MVSA Action Shooting Range includes a 10-bay range with an air conditioned building, pavilion, and restrooms. Each bay has a covered staging area with target stands and sticks available for use.

Shooters bring their own cardboard backers and targets. The range is primarily used for training and competition. Among the events are the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA), Multi-Gun, and Rimfire.

Periodic courses for handgun and rifle marksmanship and defensive handgun classes are offered. There are Concealed Handgun Carry License (CHCL) courses, taught by state-authorized instructors who are also MVSA members. The scheduled training courses include training for local law enforcement agencies. MVSA also has two lighted Trap and Skeet ranges that operate under rules and guidelines of the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) and the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA).

There are actually numerous spots in Hot Springs that are said to be haunted, with the oldest dating back to the early 1800s. For example, the site known as the Malco Theater, at 817 Central Avenue, was a venue that opened in the late 1940s, but the reported haunting goes back to the late 1880s, and concerns the disappearance of a woman during a magic show. Dive Sites Lake Ouachita has hundreds of miles of shoreline and an abundance of spectacular places to dive. All but a small handful do require the diver to use a boat. The Dam-Scuba Park and Fearless Rock Memorial ( features a memorial placed in honor of local fallen soldier and Navy SEAL Adam Brown) are both excellent beginner level dive sites.

Whirlpool Rock, (named for the whirlpool of water that would form when the river rose) and Zebra Rock, known for its dark rock cliffs with pure white veins of quartz running through them) prove fun and invigorating for intermediate level divers. Advanced divers will be challenged by Railroad Tracks, (the lake was filled in the 1950’s, the steel spikes from the railroad tracks were removed, but the cross ties and many of the railroad spikes remain).

However, honing those skills and building the muscles to do everything without fail every time takes a lot of hours and practice, whether you receive lessons or learn at home.

Big Axe Battleground It all started when Jessie Slick and his high school best friend went on vacation to Memphis. Jessie became interested in starting his own business after experiencing an axe-throwing bar there. Bringing the idea back home and asking his younger brother, Eddy Slick, to do the finances, they wondered if the company could be profitable in Hot Springs. After doing the math, they decided to give it a try. While working on plans in their parents’ backyard, they selected their father’s original target design for their company.

Jessie’s wife, Randi, also decided to get in on the fun. Together, she, Jessie, and Eddie rotate shifts as receptionists. When you walk through the door at Big Axe Battleground, you are greeted by the receptionist, sign a waiver, go through an orientation of throwing protocols, and then you get straight into throwing. On staff is a handful of trained “axperts” as they call them, that are there to help you practice safety and technique. The axpert is there to assist you for the entirety of your stay, and they can even teach you how to play three different axe-throwing games.

Big Axe Battleground in Hot Springs is located in the historic Hamp Williams building at 500 Ouachita Avenue.

This axe throwing “bar” is a BYOB facility, and the cost of axe throwing is $22 per hour per person. One target can accompany groups of 2-10 people at a time, and Big Axe is home to 10 targets.
