P
lan a trip to float the Caddo River this summer to splash your cares away. The river, which begins in the Ouachita Mountains in southern Montgomery County flowing past the communities of Norman, Caddo Gap and Glenwood before being impounded to form DeGray Lake, is ideal for beginning and advanced floaters. It is rated as an excellent family float stream. Below DeGray, the Caddo continues some four miles before joining the lower Ouachita River just north of Arkadelphia. But don’t expect it to be boring – this pooland-drop river is gentle enough for novice paddlers yet has Class I and II rapids along the way to keep your blood pumping! Love bass fishing? Check out the 40-mile stretch of the river above DeGray Lake, which is known for smallmouth and spotted bass. You might even find a walleye or two
on this tributary. Scenery along the river is excellent, with heavily forested ridges, rock outcroppings, translucent green water, and an abundance of native animal and plant life. The Caddo Gap to the Glenwood section is the most popular among canoeists and can usually be floated year around. The main attraction here is the Caddo Gap, a narrow, boulder-strewn gorge. The ancient Caddo River created the Gap as the banks slowly eroded. Naturally occurring thermal springs also rise from the riverbed near the old low water bridge. DeGray Lake covers about 13,000 acres and has about 205 miles of shoreline. The lake is about 27 miles long and is home to the Lake DeGray Resort State Park. Learn more about the park on page 9. For more information, visit CaddoRiver.com.

Bluebirds Flourish in Village Nesting Boxes
E
astern Bluebirds were endangered in the mid-20th century. But thanks to the efforts of volunteers who erected hundreds of thousands of Bluebird nesting boxes across North America, that decline has been reversed. Bluebirds are cavity nesters who can’t build their own cavities. They must compete with larger, more aggressive species for nest sites and food. HSV Audubon started their Bluebird recovery effort in 1974 with 20 nest boxes on one golf course. They
have over 300 boxes on nine golf courses, supporting 2,000 eggs annually and 40 volunteers monitor the boxes weekly from April to August. Pairs usually raise two or three broods a year. The female lays 4-5 pale blue eggs. Young birds hatch after 11-19 days of incubation and leave the nest about 19 days after hatching. They stay nearby for 7-10 days and remain in family groups for as long as 3 weeks. To learn more, go to Anatomy of a Bluebird Nest Box at hsvbirds.org.

Adopt a Furry Friend with the HSV Animal Welfare League
T
hinking of adding a new furry friend to your family? Before you head to the pet store, consider adopting a pet from the Hot Springs Village Animal Welfare League (HSVAWL). Below are a few reasons why. You'll save a life. Every year 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States. You'll get a great animal. Animal shelters and rescue groups are brimming with happy, healthy pets just waiting for you. You'll save money. Usually when you adopt a pet the cost of spay/neuter, first vaccinations and more can be included in the adoption price. You'll fight puppy mills. If you buy a dog from a pet store, online seller or flea market, it's almost certainly from a puppy mill, a factory-style breeding facility that puts profit above the welfare of dogs. You could improve your health. Not only do animals give you unconditional love, but they can be psychologi-
cally, emotionally and physically beneficial. Placing rescued adoptable animals into loving homes is what the HSVAWL is all about. The organization also offers area spay/neuter clinics and Trap-Neuter-Return options for feral cats. HSVAWL helps educate children about the humane treatment of animals by providing publications from the Humane Society of the United States. And if that isn’t enough, the group helps provide financial aid for emergency vet care to owners in need. HSVAWL helps provide foster homes for adoptable pets and assists residents who must find new homes for their pets as well. Working cooperatively with the Hot Springs Village Property Owners Association, the HSVAWL works hard to maintain a NO KILL organization and will accept just about any animal for adoption. C
entral Arkansas has long been home to great burgers, steaks and more fried catfish “than you can shake a stick at,” according to the locals. But in recent years, the international food scene has exploded with restaurants featuring cuisines from around the world. Owned by Suzan Boscarolo, the name “Ciao Baci” means “hello (or goodbye) kiss.” When the restaurant first opened, it primarily offered wine and tapas-style food. But now Ciao Bachi offers a wide variety of entrees and wines, according to David Burnette, Ciao Baci General Manager. t's all about the customers at Cypress Bayou Specialty Meats, according to Taylor Henry. “We treat them to the best food and service as we would our own family,” she says, noting “If they are happy we’re happy. If they are unsatisfied we will try and do everything we can to satisfy them and make them want to come back." Currently undergoing a remodel, the market offers a limited take-out menu of crawfish, shrimp, sausage links and potatoes as well as catering services. “We make our own seasonings and mixtures for the meats. Everything is fresh and top shelf,” says Henry. Dustin Rushing is the market’s owner and his partner, Ellis Taylor is the master mind behind the seasonings that flavor all of the food, according to Henry. Stay up to date on the market’s grand opening on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CypressBayouMeats. Neighborhoods Offer Beautiful Views and Amenities
E
njoy life across more than 26,000 acres in the largest gated community in North America. With four distinct seasons, great amenities and low property taxes, there’s something for everyone. Established in 1970, the Village is one of the top recreation and retirement communities around. More than 14,000 residents call HSV home and about 36,000 people (residents and non-residents) own property. Hot Springs Village is located in west central Arkansas, near historic Hot Springs and less than an hour from Little Rock. Pick your favorite past time – golfing, lakes, fitness, tennis, pickleball, entertainment – We have it! The Village is divided into nine neighborhoods, each with distinct amenities and features. The West Village, one of the original neighborhoods in Hot Springs Village, includes mid-century modern single-family, townhome and multi-family home designs. Many of these homes are the work of E. Fay Jones, an influential architect in the community and student of Frank Lloyd Wright. The recently renovated DeSoto Club is the central feature of this neighborhood. Designed by Jones, the building was developed with natural materials and includes stunning views of the beautiful DeSoto Golf Club. Chef Johnna at DeSoto Club offers fine and casual dining, catering, a full bar and space for events. The West Village is also home to Lake DeSoto and Waypoint Marina. The neighborhood is crisscrossed by scenic trails and located near the West Gate, within easy driving distance of groceries, restaurants, shopping and more. According to the Hot Springs Village official website, future plans for the West Village include building an additional kayak launch point on Lake DeSoto, trail system expansions and a renovated swim club and recreation park. The beautiful Cortez Highlands neighborhood is a more
mountainous region in the Village. The densely wooded neighborhood is an ideal location for those who love two-story walkout homes. One of the most photographed areas in the Village, Hole #17 on Cortez Golf Course, is located in this neighborhood. Enjoy the beauty while you play golf. Other features of this area include Lake Cortez and Cortez Beach and the Cortez Pavilion. Lakeside, mountaintop or golf course living awaits you in Hot Springs Village with homes to fit your budget. Build your dream home on a property lot here.
