Nabolag Picnic

OUR CHALLENGE:

How might we raise a sense of community through a shared meal. A shared meal is the catalyst to creating an enviroment in which residents are encouraged to come together and interact meaningfully.

SEE YOU AT THE PICNIC!

NUDGES USED: Nudge strategies guide our design interventions at particular moments leading up to our shared meal.

SEE YOU AT THE PICNIC! Felt presence Salient Reduce complexity

Initially each household receives an invitation package to attend the Naborlag Picnic. Felt presence Salient Motivation Broken window

The invitation encourages interaction as the residents have to actively and publicly RSVP. This RSVP will act as a visual reminder to other residents and play on the broken window effect influencing others to also RSVP and subsequently attend. Salient Priming Matching

On the day of the picnic their will be flags set up which are identical to those on the invite their will also be music to cue people to come down to the comunal space.

ON A GLOBAL SCALE: Constructive interactions strengthen a community. The idea of community encourages postitive and constructive interaction between people as they feel they share a connection and coman goal. The interactions that people have with each other while sharing a meal acts as bonding experiences which in turn creates a sence of community.

OBSERVED BEHAVIOR: Residents do not take advantage of opportunities presented to them. The Fredricia residents do not regluarly attend community activities although they are readily avaliable. They interact with their neighbours irregularly despite living in close quaters. Their participation in educational and volenteer work is limited and often discontinued after little participation.

TARGET BEHAVIOR: Residents actively, alongside their neighbors, seek jobs & other opportunities. Underlying behaviours that will help in the lead up to this overall target are constructive intereaction between residents. We want residents to actively engage in positive interactions that cause subsequent constructive action. This constructive action could be attending workshops together, creating their own community activities or an increase in participation existing community activities/volenteer oppertunities.

MEASURE: A comparivie study of the increase in employment in the residential area. A basic design success parameter is the percentage of residents from a building that attend our events over one year; another is how many people give feedback on each event. A wider measureable is an Increase in residents attending community activities. Subesquent outcomes of this may be an increased need for volenteers to run workshops and increased retention of resident volenteers.
