From the Editor

In seven years of circulation, Private Schools Guide of South Florida has witnessed private schools not only provide excellent academic

programs, but also hold our students to high moral standards complementing the values they receive at home. Our featured school on the cover is Fisher Island Academy School — a co-educational, independent day school bringing high levels of academic achievement and endeavors to create a diverse community of learners. We also have a featured article, What Differentiates Jewish Day Schools, highlighting the diverse quality education and endless opportunities in South Florida. We have also included an invaluable resource for parents to learn about the programs offered by some of the top private schools in our community. Lastly, Private Schools Guide of South Florida would like to congratulate St. Brendan Elementary School as they celebrate their 60th year anniversary and commemorate a milestone in private education. As always, your feedback is important to us and we look forward to hearing from you!

and in doing so they recently launched the Philip Esformes STEM Program. Every student at BMA is assessed periodically throughout the school year to ensure their goals are being met and to ensure that no student is falling behind. This is the second year they have implemented an academic support team comprised of three full time staff members along with a guidance counselor. They work mostly in a group setting so as to not single out any child and have three rooms which are designated to provide this academic support. What Differentiates

JEWISH DAY SCHOOLS From Left to right: Merav Tal - Hochberg Preparatory School, Cari Altman - Temple Beth Am Day School, Linda Schaffzin - Lehrman Community Day School, Rabbi Arnold Samlan – CAJE, Vanessa Shamosh Preciado - Brauser Maimonides Academy, Ami Eskanos - Hebrew Academy, Betty Salinas - Scheck Hillel Community School, Ronit Felszer - Jacobson Sinai Academy

Jewish day schools existed in America since Jews first came here in the seventeenth century, but when public schools were established in the late nineteenth century, Jewish immigrants eager to have their children learn English, as well as important academic skills, flocked to them. The Jewish Day School movement foundered. It was not until almost a century later in the 1960’s that the Jewish community, for a variety of reasons, began to build day schools throughout the country. South Florida mirrored that history with only a few after World War II and a plethora now that serve the area’s large, varied Jewish population. Today South Florida Jewish parents choose Jewish Day School education for as many reasons as the different types of schools that exist, though common to all is a desire to see their children connect to a community and a tradition. Research has shown that all children need to be connected to a community and a heritage, a group that affords a sense of connectedness and belonging. Others choose Jewish day school for their academic strengths: a 2013 meta-analysis noted in the Council for American Private Education newsletter that students in religious schools “...enjoy a significant academic advantage over their counterparts in traditional public schools and charter schools...” Most Jewish day schools are differentiated by their attachment to a denomination of Judaism, a philosophy of education, a given neighborhood or the age group they serve. Our editor was invited to visit nine Jewish day schools and described the experience as “one of a kind,” convinced that these students “are given all the right tools to get the job done.” Jewish day schools foster high quality education, rich with Judaic programs, enhanced by art, music, technology, and sports. We sat down and asked administrators about their respective schools in order to provide families with insight into the vast opportunities offered by these Jewish Day Schools. The following are the takeaways and opinions of the editor. We encourage you to contact the schools directly: they are eager to answer any questions you may have.

Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy Susan Lord– Admission Director Dr. Leslie Dangerfield – Principal In 1973, Ann Leibovit and Carol Roberts set out to establish the first Jewish Community Day School in Palm Beach County. Originally called the Jewish Community Day School (JCDS), it welcomed Jewish fami10 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2015

lies with the purpose of nurturing students individually and instilling in them the importance of giving back to their community. JCDS is a founding member of RAVSAK, which is the network of 120+ Jewish Community Day Schools. Now known as the Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy at the Melvin J. & Claire Levine Center for Jewish Learning, the school continues its focus on providing children of all denominations of Judaism, a rigorous general and Judaic studies curriculum. Meyer Academy is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and a Department of Education “2013 Exemplary High Performing Blue Ribbon School”. The Hebrew and Judaic studies curriculum starts in kindergarten and builds toward the 8th grade year with a class trip to Israel where students apply their knowledge and apply their social and language skills in a foreign-yet-familiar setting. Dr. Leslie Dangerfield expressed the importance of fostering students’ independence, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, leadership and collaboration. Starting in its 41st year, Meyer Academy relocated to its new, state-ofthe-art facility in 2014. The school features modern teaching technology including an innovation lab with 3D printers, and a TV broadcasting studio with green screen technology. Recent graduates from Meyer Academy include leaders in the fields of business, science, athletics, creative arts and more. For more information about Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy, contact Susan Lord at 561-686-6520 or visit the website at www.meyeracademy.org

Brauser Maimonides Academy Vanessa Shamosh – Director of Admissions Like most of the other Jewish Day Schools, many of its counterparts, Brauser Maimonides Academy was started to serve their local community. Founded on the ideals of continuing Jewish Heritage, BMA has been serving the Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale communities for over 20 years. Their goal is to cultivate the individual and collective Jewish Journey by fostering personal and professional growth and commitment to Torah, t’fillah (prayer) and halacha (traditional Jewish law.) BMA is a modern orthodox day school with a focus on character development, academic excellence (both in general studies and religious studies) and religious commitment. The Israel connection is central to their education and therefore children are exposed from early on to a dual language curriculum. Rabbi Yossi Kastan, the Head of School explains that “We don’t only want our students to learn Torah, we want them to LIVE Torah.” BMA is consistently looking to bring the best curriculum

Hebrew Academy Ami Eskanos – Dean of Admission Founded in 1947, Hebrew Academy established themselves in the community as a college and Yeshiva Preparatory day school with the mission of preparing Jewish children for the real world. Hebrew Academy is a modern orthodox community with the goal of being able to raise Jewish children as observant Jews within the modern world. They also teach their students about Israel and Zionism which makes them the only religious and Zionistic school in the community. Like most day schools, the curriculum is divided into two parts. Fifty percent of the day is spent between Judaic and Hebrew language studies and the other is spent in college prep learning, however, they do strive to incorporate the religious components across their entire curriculum. Students at Hebrew Academy are immersed in Hebrew from the time they are infants all the way through 12th grade and by graduation they can read, write, and speak Hebrew fluently. The curriculum is also focused on STEM from the time they are very little, through elementary, middle school, and high school. Their campus is equipped with a science lab for middle school and high school students and a comprehensive computer lab where students can learn programming and coding. Currently they offer a wide array of athletic programs such as football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, and cross country, and for students interested in the fine arts, they have a drama program featuring a fall musical and a spring comedy production. For more information about Hebrew Academy, contact Ami Eskanos at 305-532-6421 ext. 105 or visit the website atwww.rasg.org

Hochberg Preparatory School Dr. Linda Marks – Head of School Merav Tal – Director of Admissions Hochberg Prep is a private Jewish Day School that accepts students from infants through eighth grade. The school develops children who love to learn and future leaders who will be competitive in our global society. Individualized instruction is a cornerstone of the program. A STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) school with two outstanding STEM labs, Hochberg Prep infuses its STEM curriculum into its secular and Judaic programs from early childhood through eighth grade. In the Exploratorium, students develop their skills in such disciplines as engineering, design, and robotics. Hochberg’s robust secular curriculum is augmented by a comprehensive Judaic program. Most important, the ethics of the religion are instilled in a manner that will serve students well in advanced learning, the work force and throughout their lives. In addition to its comprehensive core curriculum, the school offers art, music, foreign language, and physical education during the school day. The students at Hochberg Prep must also learn three languages: they all learn English and Hebrew, and then they have the choice between Spanish or Mandarin-Chinese beginning in Junior Kindergarten. Hochberg Prep also offers a broad array of

extracurricular activities that take place after school. Middle School students participate in after school medical internships which is another way that STEM is incorporated into the curriculum. The school also understands the importance of parent involvement and encourages parents/guardians to serve as Hochberg Preparatory Ambassadors. For more information about Hochberg Preparatory, contact Merav Tal at 305.933.6946 or visit the website at www.hochbergprep.org

Jacobson Sinai Academy Ronit Felszer – Director of Admission and Financial Aid Founded over forty years ago, Jacobson Sinai Academy is home to students from nineteen different countries. JSA has established a reputation for offering an academically excellent secular education integrated with Judaic studies in a progressive framework.JSA’s Early Childhood offers Spanish immersion classes beginning in 18 months and STEAM (Science and Math Think Tanks) with focus on critical thinking and problem solving. ESE and ESOL resources are available in the elementary and middle school levels at no additional cost. All classrooms are equipped with world class technology, smart boards and iPads, allowing students K-8th grade to work with the school’s integrative technology. Extracurricular activities ranging from robotics, coding, cooking, sports and yoga are offered to students from ECE-Middle School. Students in middle school are able to receive high school credit for Math and Science through the school’s fast track program. JSA offers 100% Merit Scholarships to the brightest of students throughout their Middle School experience. 61% of Alumni attend Ivy League and Top-Tier universities. In addition to being an accredited liberal Jewish day school in the Northeast Miami-Dade/Southeast Broward area, JSA’s campus is hard to compete with. Not only is the 14-wooded acre campus breathtaking, but it’s also conveniently connected to the MAR JCC. For more information about Jacobson Sinai Academy, contact Ronit Felszer at 305. 932.9011 Ext. 231 or visit the website at www.jsamiami.org

Lehrman Community Day School Linda K. Schaffzin – Director of Admissions Lehrman Community Day School, founded in 1960 by Rabbi Irving Lehrman of Temple Emanu-El, has 435 students in Toddler (18 month) through 5th grade. A pluralistic school in Miami Beach, Lehrman welcomes Jewish families from all denominations, as well as the unaffiliated. Advocating core Jewish values and teaching Jewish texts, they respect each family’s own commitment to Judaism. Lehrman is respected for its academic excellence as well as its emphasis on Jewish values. According to Mrs. Schaffzin, Director of Admission, children need to feel a link to heritage, to their community, and their culture, and Lehrman’s excellent Jewish Studies curriculum, which fosters critical thinking, and the renowned Core Knowledge curriculum, which stresses cultural literacy, answer those needs. Lehrman has educated generations of Miami’s Jewish community -- upwards of 4,000 alumni -- many returning to enroll their children. The strong arts program includes visual and performing arts, and beyond PE classes the school offers competitive sports in grades four and five. Lehrman is a Google school, and students use technology as a tool to enhance their learning. Faculty and staff model lifelong learning in their participation in professional development. With low turnover, Lehrman’s administration and faculty is very stable, something Lehrman parents, who partner closely with the school in educating their children, appreciate. For more information about Lehrman Community Day School, contact Linda K. Schaffzin at 305.866.2771 ext. 18 or visit the website at www.lehrmanschool.org. FISHER ISLAND DAY SCHOOL

NURTURE THE SPIRIT

“Because they only have one childhood”

Students develop musical and artistic abilities with classes in dance, drama, and painting. A small school allows children from multiple grades to be in a play, perform in a talent show, join a choir and appreciate art by showcasing the work of young student artists.

Fisher Island is a world apart! On a private island, children ages two through Grade

5, experience a unique and unforgettable childhood. Children grow and develop their full potential in a safe, nurturing and academically rich environment. Classes are small and learning unlimited. With the lowest teacher-to-student ratio in all of South Florida, the instruction is personalized to each child. Dedicated teachers – drawn from the best in the nation – are trailblazers and traditionalists, using best practices with the latest innovations for one uncommon education. Children come from an international community — Russia, Britain, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Spain and India to join with the South Florida community. Students gain tolerance and global perspectives through the educational exchange that comes from a classroom that mirrors the world community. Fisher island Day School embraces diversity of people, cultures, and ideas.

The Fisher Island Ideal is Mind, Body, Spirit! D E V E LO P T H E M I N D A dynamic curriculum features project-based, hands-on, rigorous learning, yet embraces mind, body and spirit to nurture the whole child. Children gain a sense of wonder as they embark on island golf carts (with seat belts) to purchase fresh fruit at the local market, count manatees in the marina, explore ocean currents and weather patterns along the shore and feed exotic birds at the aviary. They exercise science skills in the STEM lab through a shark dissection, robotics and an annual science fair. Students in the school are eager learners who are encouraged to take the next steps such as publishing their own books, putting on plays, participating in a debate, or negotiating the nuances of the classics in a classroom discussion. Fisher Island School encourages students to express their perceptions of the world with clarity and purpose as readers, writers, and 20 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2015

public speakers. Children get a strong foundation in all of the core subjects and learn best when they can engage in subject material with real-world connections. Technologically equipped classrooms provide tools for exceptional cross-curricular instruction. Learning never ends in life, so here, children think critically and investigate enthusiastically in and out of the classroom. Apart from the daily lessons, all students all take Mandarin Chinese and Spanish classes. Encompassing music, dance, literature and

The physical education and athletic program of the school builds confidence, tenacity, and a resilient child through sportsmanship and teamwork. With large outdoor, well-equipped spaces the children take full advantage of the outdoor life. Fisher Island strives to have everyone from toddlers to pre-teens realize the full range of their talents and abilities. Golf, soccer, tennis, Tae kwon do, gymnastics and weekly yoga lessons help energize students and motivate them on a lifelong course to be physically fit. Fun Fridays incorporate the unique gifts of the Island like fishing, biking, kayaking, and exploring the beach. On Field Day, not only to do the children enjoy themselves, but parents become active participants by taking a day to “play” and participate in this school where the world community is a family! Children learn the importance of maintaining good health, eating well, and being active. An organic chef prepares nourishing, healthy lunches. Healthy children think clearly and learn more productively. Educating children in mind, body, and spirit goes beyond academic excellence and extends beyond the traditional day at Fisher Island Day School. Children have Active Hours – an afterschool program – that opens the doors to clubs, enhancing musical and artistic abilities and sports!

Weekly morning meetings of the entire school help students feel part of a special family, building a culture of courtesy and respect. Together, faculty and students celebrate the accomplishments of fellow classmates and gain a sense of pride and belonging they will never leave behind. During their days here at this island school students are not secluded from the world; rather, they embody responsible ideals and value the diversity of humanity. Students learn compassion for the less fortunate through community outreach initiatives. When children leave the haven of Fisher Island Day School, they carry with them the education and character of a lifetime.

Latest Trends in

Gone are the days of blackboards and chalk. Many of today’s classrooms feature interactive whiteboards called Smart Boards or Promethean Boards referencing their makers. Global spending on educational technology in classrooms is a billion dollar industry. In order to keep up with the latest teaching techniques, Florida’s private school teachers attend statewide and national teacher conferences like the National Science Teacher Association Conference which showcases the best use of this new technology. Just how are our private school educators using technology in today’s classrooms and what does the future hold? Here are some of the latest trends: The Flipped Classroom. One significant trend is the move toward the flipped classroom according to Harman Singh of Informationweek.com. A flipped classroom is form of blended learning in which students absorb content online by watching video lectures, usually at home, and homework is done in class with teachers. Teachers can spend more time helping students individually with their “homework” while students take the notes at home while watching a video. Recognize that teachers are tasked with identifying and using the best digital learning tools for each student. Different approaches to learning such as project-based learning, maker education, and game-based learning continue to be explored as part of the personalized blended learning model. The ability to tailor different lessons to different students in the same classroom allows the teacher to require students to show understanding before moving onto the next topic. As a result, the student is less likely to become lost or confused on a topic. Cloud Computing. The use of cloud computing allows science teachers to engage in authentic research experiences with their students. An example is The Global Curriculum Project according to J. Holmes of IBM. Here, students participate in a virtual exchange program with schools across five different countries. Students select and explore their own topics, including cuisine and ambitions. Tablets. BYOD (bring your own device) Some schools provide tablets while others are encouraging students to bring their own electronic device to school. Once banned, cellphones and iPads are being welcomed with restrictions (during testing perhaps). Florida’s private schools have been working with different providers to increase Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the schools. Electronic tablets and notebooks allow students to access their textbooks and other course materials such as their classroom gradebook, assignment notebook, and teacher’s website for assignments. It is easier for teachers to engage students with animated lessons rather than depending on traditional textbooks and whiteboards. Students can customize their learning experience through their own unique selection of apps. Students at a Switzerland school are using their tablets to create music in the school’s first iPad Orchestra. 42 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2015

Technology 3D Printing. While 3D printing is years away from widespread use, practical applications will take hold. Geology students can make and interact with models of fossils and other artifacts, while chemistry students can print out models of complex molecules using rapid prototyping and production tools. In an effort to engage students in STEM-related fields, Minnesota’s non-profit STARBASE created an aerospace-themed curriculum where students plan a mission to Mars. A highlight of the project is the use of 3D printing technology to create a working rocket that students launch on the final day of the program. Augmented Reality. Educators know that learning deepens, not just through reading and listening, but also through creating and interacting. According to P. Gupta of EdTechReview, “With augmented reality products, science students can manipulate and combine chemical elements right from their smart devices, rather than just reading about them in a textbook. Students can view meanings and illustrations of key vocabulary words by scanning the words in a sentence, helping them improve their vocabulary anywhere.” Since launching in 2011, Aurasma is the world’s leading augmented reality platform. Teachers can download the free app and use it to make lessons “come to life.” Sharing. Technology provides greater opportunities for collaborative working, both within the class and between schools. Teachers and students share their work with others, combine their work with others, and demonstrate the power of collaboration. Technology. Kevin Casey, of InformationWeek.com points out that there’s a shortage of qualified information technology workers in the country and one way to get kids interested in learning about technology is to make it fun. Some of his suggested websites that parents can use to excite kids about technology include: NASA kids club, Code.org, TechRocket.com, PBSkids.org, and KineticCity.com to name a few. The advancements made in technology over the last decade have been nothing short of remarkable. As the technological revolution continues to progress, so will the demand for exciting and innovative approaches to captivating young minds with educational content. More to it, these new approaches are redefining the way we think about both teaching and learning. There can be no doubt that these pioneering approaches will play a fundamental role in the overall educational experience of the student. It is the hope of every attentive educator and loving parent that such an experience will be one of both success and enlightenment. n

Opportunities for

Tomorrow’s Young

Entrepreneurs South Florida teens are lucky to be surrounded by such a business-friendly community. Businesses, schools, parents and private school alumni support young entrepreneurs by acting as mentors and judges in business competitions held each year. These events begin with the imagination of the child and some formal business education. Entrepreneurship education can take on several forms. In some schools, such an education is imbedded within the curriculum. For

Florida Prep

example, at Ransom Everglades School, students develop business plan projects as part of their AP Microeconomics class. At Pine Crest School, it is part of Economics class. Other schools provide opportunities through after school clubs. At Miami Country Day School, students become immersed in a student-centric model as part of I.C.E., an initiative that stands for innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship. At Miami Country Day students of all ages are working with faculty and community mentors to bring their ideas for new products or services to the next level. This past March, five private South Florida schools — Ransom Everglades, Pine Crest, Gulliver Prep, Christopher Columbus and Miami Country Day — participated in the second annual South Florida Business Plan Competition hosted by Miami Country Day School. Students from participating schools presented professional business plans in front of faculty, administrators, and judges from the community that included a social entrepreneur and author, a business founder, and an NYU Professor. Students first presented all aspects of their business plan, then defended their plan while taking judges’ questions. This year’s first and second-place winners were Ransom Everglades and Miami Country Day School. The winning team of students pitched their business “Steer Safe” – an app that tracks the driving patterns of adolescents. The product hopes to transform the very technology that endangers drivers into a mechanism that can encourage safe driving habits. Proceeds from the event sponsors were donated to the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). NFTE is a non-profit organization that provides programs that inspire young people from low-income communities to stay in school, to recognize business opportunities and to plan for successful futures. NFTE has served over 600,000 youths in 10 countries and 17 communities including schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. NFTE hosts similar competitions for students in low-income public schools.

Another entrepreneurship competition takes place in April co-sponsored by The Miami Herald and Florida International University’s Eugenio Pino and Family Global Entrepreneurship Center. This business plan challenge competition has three tracks, one of which is for high school students in grades 8-12. In order to enter the competition, the student must submit a 1-2 page entry with information on the business financials and marketing. The business model should prove itself to have breadth and sustainability, as well as demonstrate that it possesses, or can acquire, the resources to actually launch and be successful. This year’s first place winner was an NSU University School student from Weston who recently developed Teenography, a photography company that employs teen photographers. n

Does Your Child Have a

• Refusing to follow what are perceived as unfair directions • Complaining that consequences for misbehavior are unfair Uniqueness sounds like: “You don’t understand, and you never will because you don’t care about me as much as you care about my sister! Just because I don’t like the same things you do!” Its related behaviors include: • Claiming that she is different and thus needs different rules • Accusing others of not understanding her • Focusing on that “lack of understanding” rather than the real issue

n

Victim

Mentality? 4 Steps to Turn It Around By Janet Lehman, MSW

“It’s not fair! You’re always yelling at me, even when it’s not my fault!” Sound familiar? The minute you say no, or set limits, or try to enforce the rules, your child immediately says that you’re not being fair and that you always pick on him. He overreacts constantly to routine requests and takes no responsibility for his behavior. No matter the circumstances, he is always the one who has been wronged or unfairly put-upon—in other words, the victim. If this is a pattern—your child’s typical response—she is displaying a victim mentality. And she does so because it gives her an excuse for her bad behavior that works for her. When children take on a victim mentality, it becomes a form of defiance, used to avoid taking appropriate responsibility and being held accountable. And when it plays on our emotions as parents—getting us to question whether, maybe, we have been too tough or unfair, or making us feel guilty about any limit we try to set—rules are forgotten, limits ignored, and we lower our expectations. If left unchanged, the victim mentality can eventually impact your child’s ability to have healthy relationships and to adequately function as an adult. It is vital that your child learns new skills in order to manage responsibility in the real world. To start that process, it’s helpful to look at the behaviors that lead to the victim mentality.

48 l PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE / 2015

When your child thinks like a victim, he will begin to feel and act like a victim.

Thinking Errors That Support a Victim Mentality Thinking errors, simply put, are patterns of thinking that are inaccurate or irrational; they influence our feelings and behavior, often in negative ways. In other words, when your child thinks like a victim, he will begin to feel and act like a victim. Below are some of the common thinking errors that fuel your child’s victim mentality and its related behaviors. Victim Stance sounds like: “Why are you always on my back about the lawn? I work at a job after school and never have any time for myself ! I don’t have any time to mow the lawn!” Its related behaviors include: • Blaming others (often you, the parent) when he doesn’t meet his responsibility • Always having an excuse ready • Fighting for the right to be a victim

n

n Injustice sounds like: “You never made my older brother clean his room when he was my age. It’s because he’s a boy and I’m a girl. You always treat me worse than him. It’s not fair!” Its related behaviors include: • Viewing normal expectations as unfair

Anger with an Angle sounds like: “You started screaming at me for no reason, so I went crazy and smashed the vase. You need to stop screaming!” Its related behaviors include: • Losing control of behavior and claiming he couldn’t help himself • Training others to avoid making him take responsibility • Using anger to have power over people and things

n

Over time, parents hear these excuses, see these behaviors and get pulled into believing that it must be true. Then you start responding to your child’s unhealthy behavior in unhealthy ways. You tiptoe around your child because you can anticipate the response you’re going to get. You know your daughter is going to start yelling the minute you remind her she needs to babysit. You wonder if you should just stay home; it might even be easier than having the big fight and the risk that she’ll take out her anger on her little brother. These thinking errors can also lead to a sense of fatalism on your child’s part: he actually begins to believe he can’t change, that your expectations are beyond him, and that he is unable to take responsibility for his actions. He then becomes unable to see his role in making things better. It’s important to avoid this fatalistic trap by reminding yourself that change can happen at any time.

4 Steps You Can Take to Help Your Child Change

1. Start with targeting one behavior at a time. Identify something that is making life difficult for you, but also something that you think can really change. For example, you could start with a reasonable wake-up time and morning routine, or follow through on a chore, or expectations that meals will be civil, with no screaming allowed. 2. Sit down and talk with your child when you’re both calm. Fill them in on the change you want to focus on. “I’d like to have a discussion about following through on your chores. This is a problem for me, as I need you to do your part around the house. We all have our responsibilities in this family and doing the dishes is yours. If you want to continue to use the car, you will need to do the dishes each night. If you can’t or won’t do that, you’ll need to take the bus.” Be calm and matter-of-fact in your delivery, as your child is so used to overreacting to any expectations or limits. Think of what you’re doing as all business. The limit setting parent role works best when you are non-emotional. Don’t expect that your child will take kindly to this, though. In fact, they may be quite resistant, but stay calm and focused through the initial challenges.

3.

Don’t give up on expectations and consequences—and don’t give in to bad behavior. It takes a long time to relinquish the victim mentality and replace it with a more responsible way of thinking and behaving. It’s become a habit for your child, and parents often develop habits in response. It’s easy to fall back into these habits and to think that rather than setting this limit and dealing with my child’s defiance, I’ll back off this one time and let it go. This is natural. We all try to avoid things that feel like work, but in this case the work is worth it.

4.

Provide positive reinforcement when your child takes responsibility and makes good choices. The changes may be subtle at first, but the minute your child starts taking responsibility for his actions, he’s beginning to shed the victim mentality. He’ll need encouragement to keep changing his thinking and taking on healthier problem-solving skills, and you can provide this. Remember: change doesn’t happen overnight. Once your child realizes that there is really going to be a change in expectations, they will slowly begin to meet those expectations. And once the change begins, additional behaviors can be addressed and expectations added. Keep in mind the goal of all this work: to raise our kids to be responsible adults, able to function in life and to solve the problems that come up along the way. Feeling and acting like a victim will not lead to the kind of adult life we want for our kids. But once your child has learned to take responsibility for their behavior, they will feel better about themselves, be better able to solve problems and make the most of their life. n
